The E1 Indio Mine is located in the Andes mountains about 180 kilometers East of La Serena, capital of the Fourth Region of Chile. It is reached by an international highway running up the Elqui Valley as far as Juntas from where the last 42 kilometers is on a road constructed by the Company. The plant is located at 3.900 meters above sea level among extremely rugged terrain with nearby mountains rising about 5.500 meters. Climatic conditions at these altitudes are severe with winter temperatures down to -20°C. Snow storms lasting several days and leaving up to two meters of snow have been experienced, while fierce winds are corm=.

The 11th Annual Mineral Economics and Management Society (MEMS) conference was held April10-12, 2002, in Montreal, Quebec. It consisted of a series of technical sessions. Each paper addressed the economic issues that are related to the changes that many people believe are now required in the mining industry. Some of the papers were directed at how the mining industry will handle the changes that will be required in its philosophy and operations management. Of equal importance was whether the industry possesses the toolkit necessary to effect these changes and emerge stronger from its challenges.

Introduction Gold Quarry is one of the largest gold deposits in Nevada, located along the Carlin Trend, approximately seven miles north of Carlin, NV. Owned and operated by Newmont Mining Corporation, as of December 31, 2005, Gold Quarry had produced over 13 million ounces of gold. Multiple simulations were constructed for gold and metallurgical variables using the Stepwise Conditional Transformation method. Analyses of these simulations have been used for a variety of purposes, including an assessment of uncertainty with various ore types. This assessment provides insight for improved modeling and reconciliation. Geological Framework Gold Quarry is a large, low-grade disseminated gold deposit hosted in Silurian-Devonian aged sediments at the Chukar/Alunite-Good Hope fault intersection. Gold bearing hydrothermal fluids appear to have migrated upwards along the Chukar/Alunite and Deep Sulfide Feeder faults and then moved outward along favorable stratigraphic horizons and structural intersections.

To mitigate and control the combined sewer over-flows from 17 outfalls in Detroit, MI, three outfalls in Dearborn Heights, MI and eight outfalls in Redford Township MI, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) completed the preliminary design of a storage tunnel in 2005. In 2006, a final design revised the alignments and the inside diameter (ID) of the tunnel. The revised tunnel system includes an 11.28-km (7-mile) 9.14-m (30-ft) ID tunnel, a 24.4-m (80-ft) ID pump station, two work shafts about 15.2-m (50-ft) ID each and 14 drop shafts with various IDs. A small portion of combined sanitary and storm sewers serve the majority of the Rouge Valley water-shed. This includes Detroit, MI and most of the western suburbs. The Northwest Interceptor (NWI), that extends between Eight Mile Road and Ford Road and roughly parallel to the Rouge River, intercepts sanitary sewage and some wet weather flows from trunk sewers in the tributary areas for transport to the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for treatment. During extreme storm events, when the capacity of the NWI is exceeded, the excess combined sewer and overflow (CSO) over-flows into the Rouge River through 17 outfalls to local rivers. The purpose of the Upper Rouge Tunnel system (URT) is to capture and significantly reduce the uncontrolled CSO from these 17 outfalls in Detroit, three outfalls in Dearborn Heights and eight outfalls in Redford Township. As a result of several recent methane/dust ignitions in surface auger and highwall mines, the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the occurrence of methane gas at these operations. Three mine sites were visited in western Kentucky and one in western Pennsylvania to collect run-of-mine coal samples for gas content determination using the modified-direct-method (MOM). Results indicate the samples emitted small quantities of methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. Either methane or nitrogen was the predominant gas released. The same gases were released after crushing the samples for residual gas content; however, nitrogen was the primary component of this fraction. Total ~as contents ranged from less than 0.01 cm /g to 0.54 cm3/g. The hydrocarbon gases probably originated during coalification. Other gases may have originated partially as a byproduct of coalification and partially as a result of other, near-surface processes. The data suggest that although methane quantities are small, desorption could occur at near surface conditions prior to mining. The desorbed methane could accumulate as a free gas in fractures in the coal bed or roof rock. When these fractures are penetrated by the auger, methane could rapidly enter the whole atmosphere possibly creating explosive conditions.

One of New York City?s largest subway projects is under way 43 m (140 ft) beneath the surface of downtown Manhattan. The East Side Access project, more than 30 years in the making, was halted after a partial excavation in the 1970s due to a lack of funding. The project, once dubbed the ?Tunnel to Nowhere,? has been revitalized into a groundbreaking subway line that includes unique tunnel boring machines (TBM), construction methods and muck removal systems. Project overview The East Side Access project involves construction of a new 6.7-km (4.2-mile) subway line needed to relieve heavy traffic congestion between the boroughs of Queens and Manhattan. The line will serve approximately 160,000 commuters daily between Grand Central and Sunnyside rail stations. Manhattan and Queens will be connected under the East River by the 63rd Street tunnel, a submersed double-decker tube. The submersed tube consists of reinforced concrete sections barged in place on the riverbed. The tube contains operational subway lines on the top deck, while the bottom deck (the ?Tunnel to Nowhere?) will become operational when the East Side Access project is completed in 2013.

As a clean and renewable energy carrier, hydrogen is an important component of most alternative energy portfolios. Hydrogen combines very high energy content by weight with excellent environmental attributes. Since hydrogen reacts with oxygen to produce only water with release of energy, it can be used to power fuel cells, combustion engines, and turbines, without production of greenhouse gases at point of use. However, because of its low volumetric density, storing pure hydrogen is impractical. Thus implementation of hydrogen technologies requires materials that can safely store and release large amounts of hydrogen (1,2). In recent years, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and other governmental agencies around the world sponsored extensive research on hydrogen storage materials, including those based on boron. These efforts have resulted in significant advances in hydrogen storage technologies. Boron materials stand out as leading candidates for hydrogen storage among the many options investigated. Combining excellent hydrogen densities, release rates, and safety characteristics, some boron materials can hold substantially more hydrogen by weight and volume than even pure liquid hydrogen (3-5).

Peng The highlights of this paper are : • The shield supports with lemniscate links will exert a tangential force on the roof strata, causing unnecessary and harmful roof movements, thus damaging the roof structure. The principal source of the tangential force is the horizontal movement of the point O, the pivotal joint between the canopy and the caving shield. When the support height is changed during setting, the point O will move along a curve upward and rearward toward the gob. As a result, it produces a vertical movement, causing the roof to move up a distance of ?d, and a horizontal movement toward the gob, creating vertical fractures in the roof. • The major purpose for employing the lemniscate-link system is to protect the hydraulic legs against the action of the bending moments induced by the tangential force that causes deformation or destruction of the legs. • Based on these two points, the author suggested that, in order to eliminate the harmful effects of the lemniscate-link system and strengthen its advantageous features, a shield support with a new design of that mechanism has been developed. With the new design, the conventional rigid lemniscate links are replaced by hydraulic rams. When the pressure inside the rams reaches a certain level, the ram will yield.

Introduction Rock bolting is a general term that encompasses pinning, roof bolting, rib bolting, and cable bolting. Rock bolting contributes the highest nonproductive cost and is the most significant safety risk in mining today. Total installed bolt costs are now more than $20 per bolt. Rebolting or repair work doubles this. And bolting accidents account for about 30% of all fatal and nonfatal lost time accidents. It is only logical, then, for the mine operator to install the highest quality anchors possible. Every bolt on the market - tensioned, untensioned, full contact, or point anchor - has designed capabilities in axial, shear, and fluctuating ground conditions. Bolts will provide a designed support if material specifications and installation procedures fall within the manufacturer's recommendations. This also assumes that there are no unexpected geological or operational changes. Proper material specifications and installation procedures should guarantee the mine operator a quality anchor. To help assure this, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the US Bureau of Mines (USBM), and the AMC Manufacturers group developed stringent ASTM materials standards. These govern mechanical point anchor bolts and bolts using threaded and nonthreaded rebar. There are also minimum standards that suppliers must comply with in the manufacture of frictional bolts. However, most frictional bolt standards are based on the manufacturer's own specifications. It would be impossible to set uniform regulations on frictional bolts. Each bolt provides support in a slightly different manner and thereby requires different material needs. Quality Control In any case, material quality can generally be assured through tight order specifications and periodic quality control checks. The problem with installing quality anchors does not solely lie with the material. It includes all the events that occur from the time a bolt leaves a manufacturer to the time it is installed. The anchoring ability of any major type bolt can be affected by transportation, storage, mechanical performance of installation equipment, installation demands of the operator, proper drilling accessories, and local geology. Table 1 and Fig. 1 document the negative events that can affect each bolt and the degree to which it can be affected. Drilling a hole of oversized diameter, for example, is an operator controlled factor. It will adversely affect most bolts. An over-sized diameter reduces, or even eliminates, the anchorage capability of a mechanical shell. It will reduce the support capacity of a split set to nearly nothing. And it will cause a partial or incomplete grouting around the resin bolt. Frequently, due to bit wear, holes are drilled undersized in diameter and may not be properly cleaned out. In this case, it will be difficult for the operator to push the mechanical shell into the hole, thereby causing him to drill another hole. In cases where the bolt is obviously not providing anchorage, operators will probably drill another hole and place another bolt. Rock Bolt Regulations It is the situations where a bolt is improperly installed in the hole, but gives the appearance of a good bolt, that are frightening. In fact, some safety officials and engineers believe that only 50% to 60% of installed bolts are working. These bolts cause irregular ground load transfers in other bolts and overload them. This causes hazardous situations and overstressing. It is these bolts that fail prematurely 200 to 255 mm (8 to 10 in.) behind the face and possibly contribute to the high accident rate. The properties of interfacial water at hydrophilic surfaces are of great importance in many technological areas including flotation, solid-liquid separation, dispersion and emulsions, flocculation, adsorption, corrosion, and soil contamination. This paper examines the use of FTIR/internal reflection spectroscopy (FTIR/IRS) to study the spectral characteristics of interfacial water at silica surfaces. FTIR spectra were characterized by consideration of the OH stretching region (3000-3800 cm-1) associated with the vibrational spectra of interfacial water. The broad peak in this region was deconvoluted in order to isolate overlapping spectral features that describe the nature of hydrogen bonding in interfacial water. Three distinct bands were found; -3600 cm-1 (free OH), -3400 cm-1 (incomplete tetrahedral coordination), and -3240 cm-1 (complete tetrahedral coordination) and the variation of their intensities with pH was found to be significant. This spectral information helps to explain orientation and bond ordering of interfacial water molecules at hydrophilic surfaces.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, the author has been asked by several mining companies and mining publications to share some of his insights on how the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) and Pentagon might affect the mining industry globally. Until now, the author has been reluctant to express his thoughts in a publication that could possibly fall into the hands of terrorists and give them some ideas that they may not have been previously considering. However, the author discussed the contents of this article with several friends and acquaintances in the international intelligence community. They said that nothing commented on here is new to the terrorists. Potential terrorist targets Sources within the worldwide intelligence gathering community have told the author that current intelligence data indicates that it is likely that the Islamic fundamentalist groups responsible for the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001will likely be directing their effort at foreign business entities. Any overseas or any domestic businesses of highly visible companies that are part of the anti-terrorism alliance should consider themselves a potential target.

NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory is currently involved in research to identify silica dust generation in underground metal/nonmetal mines. The ultimate goal of this research is to develop control technologies to reduce worker exposure to respirable silica dust. Commodities and job classifications with the highest silica dust exposure have been identified through analysis of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) compliance dust sampling database. Dust surveys were conducted in an underground limestone and gold mine to investigate silica dust sources, generation levels, and controls being used. A summary of the mining operations, sampling procedures, resulting data, and suggested methods to improve the dust control will be provided.

"Colored gemstones are most often mined in small scale artisanal mining operations. Sri Lanka is well known as source for precious stones since thousands of years. Gemstones are mine in small open pits, directly in rivers (river dredging) and in underground mines. Almost all mined deposits are alluvial deposits. PRECIOUS STONES AND DEPOSITS Precious stones from Sri Lanka are well known for thousands of years. Tales and legends from Arabia, India, China and reports from discoverers like Marco Polo describe the fabulous stones from Ceylon which was the name for Sri Lanka before 1972. Already 1000 BC King Salomon got valuable gemstones from the legendary Queen of Sheba on her visit to Jerusalem. Paintings (frescoes) of the “cloud maidens” with huge gemstones can be seen at the “mirror walls” of the Sigiriya rock fortress - one of the eight World Heritages Sites of Sri Lanka.And even today some of the most valuable and most desired gemstones come from Sri Lanka. The term “Ceylon Sapphire” stands for an excellent royal blue color of high quality corundum from Sri Lanka. Reason enough to look a bit closer how these gemstones are mined. Sri Lanka has rich gemstone deposits which are mined underground, in small open pits or directly within a river. Some of the primary deposits in magmatic and metamorphic rock are also known, but most gemstones are mined in secondary alluvial deposits. Gem bearing deposits can be found in a band from NW to SE. Highly probable deposits and main mining areas can be found around Ratnapura – the city of gems, down to the coast (Matale) and up to the region around Elahera. These secondary deposits are mostly thin layers of gravel and sand, so called “illam”. The depth can vary between some dm to 10 25 m or even almost 40 m. But the average depth is about 12 m. Gemstone mining is controlled, licensed and regulated by a special authority – the National Gem and Jewelry Authority - which was founded in 1993. Another task of this authority is the promotion and development of the gemstone industry and the control of import and export of gemstones. Any violence of the NGJA law can lead to a fine or even up to 5 years imprisonment. To increase the confidence in the gemstone industry the Authority offers a unique service to foreigners. All bought gemstones can be tested free of charge in certain laboratories in Ratnapura and Colombo. So visitors can be sure they got no imitations, wrong stones or even synthetic stones or glass. It was said that detected synthetic stones will be destroyed and the seller will do all he can to replace the stone with the right stone. Otherwise he will lose his license."

A bearing isolator is a noncontact, nonwearing, permanent bearing protection device. It has a rotor and a stator, and the two are unitized, so that they do not separate from one another while in use. The rotor turns with a rotating shaft, while the stator is pressed into a bearing housing. The two components interact to keep contamination out of the bearing enclosure and the lubricant in. Bearing isolators do not require lubrication or any particular shaft finish or condition. The best bearing isolators are made of metal, usually bronze. They use a vapor-blocking feature that inhibits the free transfer of vapor contamination when the rotating equipment is cycled on and off.

The paper describes the main drive systems of an iron ore pelletizing plant and related important design aspects. It is shown how today?s drive systems provide the desired flexibility for the process and lead to high energy efficiency and system reliability. With respect to electric drives expansion projects have many technical issues in common with green-field installations. However, there are aspects where important, distinct differences occur. It is shown which considerations for selecting and sizing drive systems for such a plant as well as for integrating them into an overall plant control concept need to be taken into account. Besides the design of the drive systems a key aspect for such an expansion project is the network interaction. Harmonics levels at different points in the plant network need to be checked carefully with simulations during the design phase to avoid problems later-on during operation. The power factor compensation and the harmonic filtering of the new production line cannot be designed independently of the already existing plant. The paper highlights areas where problems could occur and which points need to be paid attention to when a plant is expanded.

Carbothermic reduction kinetics of ilmenite concentrates catalyzed by sodium chloride and the microwaveabsorbing characteristics of the resulting reductive products were investigated; the reduction degree of the reaction was deduced to be . Results show that the activation energy is 112.03 kJ/ mol when NaCl is used as catalyst, lowering to 23.11 kJ/mol for the final stage activation energy using sodium silicate as a catalyst. There is a sharp change in the reduction rate constant at temperature ranges of 1,223 K - 1,273 K and 1,373 K - 1,423 K. Microwave-absorbing characteristics of reductive products were measured by the method of microwave cavity perturbation. It was found that microwave-absorbing characteristics of reductive products obtained at temperatures of 850° C, 1,100° C and 1,150° C show sharp changes. Through X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterization, it was found that the formation of Fe occurs at a temperature of 900° C during the reduction process of ilmenite concentrate. The decrease of FeTiO3 content results in the decrease of microwave-absorbing characteristics, while the increase of Fe content gives rise to the increase of microwaveabsorbing characteristics. The decreasing trend is larger than the increasing trend, which is the main reason for the sharp changes in the microwave-absorbing characteristics of reductive products at the temperature range of 850° C to 900° C. When the decreasing trend is smaller than the increasing trend, it becomes the main reason for the sharp changes in microwave-absorbing characteristics of reductive products at the temperature range of 1,100° C to 1,150° C. Kinetics results show that sodium chloride can catalyze the carbothermic reduction of ilmenite, and microwave-absorbing characteristic investigations indicate that microwave heating can be used in the carbothermic reduction of ilmenite.

The North Shore Connector Project for the Port Authority of Allegheny County constructs twin Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) tunnels through cohesive soils and rock beneath the Allegheny River and a narrow city street in Pittsburgh, PA. The tunnel alignment includes an historic building on shallow foundations, modern buildings on deep foundations, and an office building constructed directly over the alignment during the design of the tunnel sections. This paper provides an overview and update of the general site conditions, TBM tunnel design, and support of excavation for the TBM launching pit. Deformation limits, ground improvement, monitoring and mitigation plans are also discussed.

The classical approach to control rock fall and ravel in open pit mining has been to use catch benches. The width and volume of benches is most dependent on the bench height, size of loading equipment, blast damage to the face and mining regulations. This was compatible with open pit slopes of less than about 45°. As our understanding of rock mechanics and blasting control has improved over recent years, much steeper rock slopes can be developed at many open pit mines. However, narrower benches result with less rock fall capacity. The transportation industry has been very successful in using catch fences to protect highways throughout North America and Europe for years. The authors recommend that cable and ring net fences have a potential major application in open pit mining to allow steeper rock slopes with significant economic benefit. This paper outlines the application, design and operation of catch fences in surface mining for specific conditions. Typical case examples are presented.
