"Rod-like magnetite particles were prepared by precipitation of iron salts with urea under the induction of magnetic field. Temperature and initial Fe3+/Fe2+ ratio have a significant effect on the composition of the product. Magnetite particles change from spherical into rod shape in the presence of a 0.35 T magnetic field, The addition of a small amount of spherical seeds increases the rod-like magnetite particles yield. The seeds are prepared by aging ferrous and ferric solution with sodium hydroxide as precipitator. The aspect ratio of the rod is controlled by varying the volume ratio of seed to iron salt.IntroductionMagnetite, an important member of magnetic materials, has attracted a lot of attentions for its super magnetic properties. The rod-like magnetite particles have high anisotropy and coercive force as well as super magnetic properties compared to other shapes, and are widely used as high magnetic density media, magnetic devices and microwave materials [1-4]. Recent studies have found that magnetic field can direct magnetite growing along easy magnetization axis to get one-dimension particles [5-6]. Chen et al. [7] synthesized single crystalline nanorod magnetite under magnetic field. Wang et al. [8] discovered that magnetite grew along easy-magnetization directions under 0.35T magnetic field. Vereda et al. [9-1 O] found that magnetic field had a dramatic effect on the morphology, inducing the aggregates to line along one direction to form rodlike particles.At present, most of the synthesis methods reported in the literature result in a low yield of rod particles and the aspect ratio are difficult to control. Recently, we developed a seed-mediated growth approach to making rod-like particles in an aqueous solution. The spherical magnetite generated by oxidation serves as a seed. These seeds are then added to a solution containing iron salt and urea, and provide nucleation sites for magnetite rod growth."

(Read at the Amenia Meeting, October, 1878.) As the forms of blown-out furnaces are of much interest to iron-masters and metallurgists, the manner of taking the accompanying sections of the Cedar Point stack is here given. The diagrams show the original and also the final shape of the furnace after a two years and twelve days' blast, during which the following solid materials passed through it, viz.: Coal, 41,000 tons; ore, 57,000 tons ; limestone, 30,000; total, 128,000 gross tons. Product, 41 1/4 tons per day Bessemer pig iron. The apparatus used in taking the sections was a modification of that proposed by Mr. Frank Firmstone,* and consisted of a sliding rule, to follow around the circumference of the stack, which rule was connected by a string to a segment of a circle of 24 inches radius. The segment was carried by an arm which connected it to a hub as a centre, 2 inches in diameter. A second string was wound around the hub, and communicated motion to a pencil-carrier, the pencil of which marked out on paper the exact outline, and reduced it to a scale of 1/2 inch to the foot. The whole machine was made in about three hours, with the facilities of a carpenter's shop, and gave in operation every irregularity of the lining. The sections were taken at salient points, by lowering a hanging staging on which the apparatus was placed. Tracings from the paper of the machine were made, and, as in this case several copies were required, the tracings were glued on to thin sheets of basswood, and patterns carefully sawed out with a bracket saw. * Transactions, vol. iii, p. 106.

These rocks are not favorable to secondary enrichment and the oxidized zone is poorer than the sulphide zone, which alone contains the ore. There are also in Katanga a few ore-bearing veins. One of them is being worked in the Prince Leopold mine at Kipushi.

PRINCE LEOPOLD MINE The Kipushi ore body fills a fault vein and invades the wall rocks more or less extensively by metasomatic replacement. The vein strikes north-northeast and south-southwest and dips to the west. The variable dip averages 60ºto a depth of 300 ft., and more uniformly 80º below 400 ft. In the upper section the average width is 200 ft. and below the width is about 150 ft. The length of the ore body is 2300 feet. Introduction Throughout the Great Plains region (the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta), numerous clay deposits of widely varying composition and character are to be found. These may be classified into two general types: (1) surface clays, and (2) shales. The surface clays consist of a heterogeneous mantle of silts and clays interspersed with grave! and sand deposits, and may belong to any of the following groups: (1) lake clays: (2) river-terrace or flood-plain deposits; (3) delta deposits . In most cases, the water from which these deposits were ' laid down was derived from the melting ice of the continental glaciers. These surface clays, in general, possess certain characteristics in common, being all more or less calcareous, often silty, and showing a tendency to 'check' in air-drying. The shales found in this region are of Cretaceous and Tertiary age. These deposits have a wide extent, but there is frequently such a heavy covering of drift material that the clays are accessible chiefly along the walls of stream valleys, or along the escarpments of uplands.

To evaluate chemically the sample of rock obtained by diamond drilling, it has long been recognized that the analyses of the two components of the sample, core and sludge, must be given appropriate influence in computing the average analysis of any unit of depth. The purpose of this investigation is to set forth what means are available for apportioning the effect of core and sludge on the final analysis, what variables affect the problem, and what combination of applied mathematics will closest approximate the truth under each condition as these variables proceed within their limitations. A drill hole is bored in iron ore ex- ploration principally to test variations in rock composition with depth and is usually directed as nearly normal to the bedding of a horizon to be tested as possible. This practice has a tendency to minimize variation in composi- tion laterally which in any event is not likely to be great. It is obvious that the opportunity for change in analysis of a particular rock is not statistically as great radially in a diamond drill hole where the distance in which such a change may occur is from 0.719 in. (EX bit) to 1.469 in. (NX bit) as there would be longitudinally even in a run as short as 5 ft. Variations in composition of bedded or layered rocks are usually greater normal to the bedding than parallel thereto. Even in massive rocks, like porphyries, varia- tions are functions of distance. Hence, in either case, variations along the hole are of greater effect than across it.

Provide an effective method for "soft" soldering aluminum and aluminum alloys using conventional tin-lead solder alloys and flukes. The Problem In the past, it was virtually impossible to solder aluminum and aluminum alloys using standard tin-lead soldering systems (solder and flux) due to the presence of an aluminum oxide surface film which forms instantly on aluminum and aluminum alloys when these are exposed to air. The tenacious and stable oxide film enables aluminum-base materials to maintain their bright luster. But the film also prevents the required wetting and spreading of solder on the substrate, causing the loss of adhesion between the solder and the substrate. The vector sum peak particle velocity (PPV) of blast vibrations describes the blast vibration intensity more completely than the PPV of a single component waveform. It is more logical to use a vector sum PPV as a vibration limit than using a single component PPV. In 1980 the USBM recommended the frequency related peak particle velocity criterion. So far this method has been only applied to single component waveforms, but not to the vector sum PPV since there is no method available to associate a frequency to the vector sum PPV. The present paper describes a method to define a principal frequency associated with vector sum PPV. The method is based on the weighted average of the principal (zero-crossing) frequencies of the three tri-axial components at the time of the PPV.

Pyritic black shales present several challenges to mining operations due to their reactivity. The risk of predetonation of explosives in blastholes, spontaneous combustion of fractured rock and the generation of acid rock drainage must be managed for safety, operational and environmental reasons. At the Mt Tom Price iron ore mine there is a need to differentiate between reactive and non-reactive shale in order to assess risk and make decisions on materials handling. The current approach uses a combination of stratigraphic information and sulfur analysis of blasthole samples. The time taken for sulfur analyses can be a constraining factor on mine production. A new instrument developed by ANSTO Minerals overcomes some of the current limitations on material characterisation. The IOR MeterÖ measures the intrinsic oxidation rate (IOR) of samples of broken rock by circulating air through a sample and monitoring the oxygen concentration over time. The intrinsic oxidation rate is given by the rate at which oxygen is consumed per unit mass of sample, in units of kg(oxygen) kg-1(sample) s-1. Up to eight samples can be measured simultaneously and the turn-around time can be less than 12 hours. Initial trials of the IOR MeterÖ were undertaken at the Mt Tom Price mine in July 2004. The measured IOR of samples from a blasthole pattern spanning different geological layers containing black shale, correlated strongly with the expected reactivity of those layers. The correlation between position in the geological sequence (detailed stratigraphy) and IOR MeterÖ results were much stronger than that between stratigraphy and sulfur content. The new characterisation technique offers the prospect of improving the ability to identify and predict the behaviour of reactive black shales and to differentiate more precisely between different materials. Mine planning, operations, safety and environment all stand to benefit from the success of further trials of the technique.

Dust from worker,s clothes has been shown to be a problematic source of personal dust exposure. A recently completed effort between NIOSH and the Unimin Corporation has resulted in a quick and effective way to clean worker clothing. The process involves a booth under negative pressure with an air spray manifold to supply compressed air to blow off the dust from the clothing. The overall system is designed to meet MSHA and OSHA requirements. Results of field testing indicated that the manifold cleaned the clothes 10 times faster and removed 50% more dust than cleaning methods used by workers today.

With the growing demand for energy, explora¬tion for uranium deposits has dramatically increased in the past few years. Since the early ages of uranium exploration, natural gamma ray logs has proved fast and convenient in locating and evaluating mineralized bodies. However, natural gamma ray logging is an indirect measure of the uranium content and in some circonstances, the radiometric signal can be 'altered in a very significant way. To check the presence of any distortion, statistical comparision of radiometric counts and chemical assay values for the same samples is generally performed. Of course in such studies, one inevitably mixes samples where the radiometric signal is really proportional to the uranium content and samples where this signal is influenced by many other sources or distorted before being recorded. Nevertheless, the average tendency leads to correction factors which are then applied to every radiometric reading in the deposit or portion of the deposit where the statistical comparison is made. To account for the "average" character of these correction factors, a parameter of uncertainty like a standard deviation of possible errors is associated to each corrected value. This parameter can be latter used in an ore reserve estimation when the weights assigned to samples should depend on the precision of their grade. The purpose of this paper is to present a new regression technique which can be used without any restrictive hypothesis like a normal or lognormal distribution. Different standard ways which can be used to statistically compare radiometric and chemical assay values for the same sample and to derive a correction factor for the latter will first be reviewed, after a general discussion of disequilibrium problems. The discussion and the examples will be restricted to the case of natural gamma ray logging in drill holes but the methods presented in this paper can also be applied to data from the radiometric probing of a working face or a truck load in an operating mine.

Fracture toughness of oil shale is an essential property in fragmentation to optimize particle sizes and permeability distributions in in-situ processes. Fracture mechanics of oil shale has been based on conventional fracture mechanics using notched samples and assuming the material to be isotropic and elastic. Oil shale is a layered material more accurately characterized as transversely isotropic. The senior author proposes to use a semi- circular core specimen with a center crack subjected to three point bending. Singular crack tip elements with isoparametric elements are used. The precracked semi-circular disk is modeled under displacement loading. The effect of crack length on the non-dimensionalized stress intensity factor is investigated by strain energy method, ellipse method, and stress method. Very close agreements are found. The fracture toughness is obtained by compressing the specimen in to failure. Parameters such as oil yield are investigated.

The solution of the problem of beneficiation of cassiterite from its primary ore deposits is of fundamental importance to Bolivia. The process today involves a gravimetric treatment of the ore followed by sulphide flotation. During the last year, a cassiterite flotation stage has been added in several plants to treat the slime tailings. Although cassiterite flotation is already economical for the slime tailings and the mechanism of the process are understood, it is felt that further research could improve the results. In the past, considerable amount of research and test ark has been performed to select appropriate collectors to improve recovery, to increa¬se the grade of tin in the concentrate, to minimize the effect of metallic ions like Ca+2, Fe+2 and Fe+3 which prevent flotation, and to increase the pH of the pulp which now it can not be higher than 3.0. It has been reported that the halogen salts (1) like NaCl exhibit special surface affinity for cassiterite but none for quartz. These effect seems to be favourable for the selective flotation of cassiterite from silica minerals. In view of these preliminary results it was decided to follow the research accordingly: OBJECTIVES The objectives of the present investigation are: 1. 0 evaluate the influence of NaCl salts in quartz and cassiterite flotation.

"Precious metals (PM) in copper anode slimes are traditionally recovered by pyrometallurgical processes. Due to the compliance with increasingly stringent environmental regulations, it has made hydrometallurgical processing an attractive method for recovery of precious metals, including relatively inert metals such as gold and platinum group metals (PGMs). In this paper, a new method to recover PGM from complex and difficult feed streams is described. Using a proprietary Advanced Ion Exchange (AIX) adsorbent which has a high selectivity for PGMs over other metals and can achieve high PGM mass loadings with a series of incredible pilot test data plus the business case generated from the study results are also presented in the paper.INTRODUCTIONPrecious metals in copper anode slimes are traditional recovered by pyrometallurgical processes. Fully hydrometallurgical processes for extraction and recovery of gold and silver from copper anode slimes were employed in major copper refineries since 1995, which was first developed at Rio Tinto Kennecott Utah Copper.In Rio Tinto KUC process, the wet chlorination and gold solvent extraction were utilized to enable recovery of gold and silver as well as other metal compounds. The availability of water and the interaction and amenability of gold processing in water-based solution makes it possible that gold and silver are produced in only five days, compared with a traditional pyrometallurgical process that took 45 days. Most copper refineries are still following the tradition, but the use of hydrometallurgical technologies is increasing as the world demand for metals increases, energy utilization, and environmental viability."

"PET bottles are separated and subsequently crushed into flakes. Except for PET, these flakes contain PE, PVC, paper, adhesives, beverages remainders and mineral impurities. PET itself usually is a glycol and terephthalic and isophthalic acid polymer.The suggested method consists in PET flakes crystallization at 255°C. In the meantime, volatile substances evaporate and PVC disintegrates. Formed crystalline PET is crushed into small particles and then is subject to the basic hydrolysis at an atmospheric pressure. In addition to lye solution, glycol is added in the hydrolysis. Water is eliminated by boiling, which gives rise to suspension of sodium salt of terephthalic acid and glycol. The suspension is skimmed and the filtered glycol is vacuum distilled. Pure glycol is then the distillation product.Crystals are dissolved in water and the solution is filtered, which eliminates PE and impurities. Electrodialysis removes pure terephthalic acid salt from the solution. Glycol solution is returned to the hydrolysis. Terephthalic acid is precipitated by a mineral acid. Subsequently, it is washed and dried. The filtrate is separated through electrodialysis to lye and acid. The lye gets back to the hydrolysis and the acid is used for precipitation. Terephthalic acid and glycol are products in a “polymer grade” quality. The waste is a part of washing waters, distillation residues after glycol regeneration and a filter cake after the terephthalate solution filtration."

The underground mining evolution for block cave mines in Chile and worldwide has made important strides in the last decades. Nonetheless, reserves determination in the initial stages of these types of projects—mainly for long-term planning—is not studied in as much detail as it should be, especially regarding the impact on the final value of the enterprise. Today, the first estimation of the size of a block cave mine, typically expressed in tons, tends to determine very large footprints and ore bodies. The resulting large-scale mine is obtained by applying the marginal cut-off grade (COG) to determine reserves. Yet, in many cases, it is possible to obtain an equal or higher benefit, extracting fewer reserves in less time, with a smaller active area, which significantly reduces the project’s uncertainty. To explore scenarios obtained by applying a higher marginal COG in the initial phases of the project, the Hill of Value methodology is used to estimate the net present value (NPV) in relation to the production rate and the COG. However, the application of this methodology considers certain simplifications that generate results which are not completely satisfactory in specific cases. This paper suggests an improvement of this method to obtain more reliable results regarding determination of a COG profile that will optimize the NPVof a block-cave project. The methodology was developed and applied in a massive polymetallic deposit with zinc, lead, and silver mineralization, corresponding to a real block caving project. The methodology provides NPV results that differ by approximately 15% in comparison to the real mine plan, while also being considerably simpler and faster to calculate. In summary, the proposed methodology provides a reasonable and fast procedure to estimate higher than marginal COG that increases the NPV of block cave mine projects.

A critical concern of any mining company today is its relationship with the different stakeholder groups impacted by the operational activity û communities, unions, vendors, local partners and competitors, local and federal governments, interest groups and non-government organisations. What ten years ago would have gone unnoticed, now, and even more so in the future, can drastically impact the profitability and even existence of a mining operation. This paper describes the development and delivery of a new paradigm for creating effective external stakeholder relationships. We report on the actual measurable results of an integrated and highly complex initiative led by Lonmin Plc (Lonmin) and Landmark Education Business Development (LEBD) that significantly altered the nature of the relationship with the stakeholders. Given the nature of the long-term investment required in a mining operation, any breakdowns or surprises in its relationship with external stakeholders brings with it the potential for major loss. The transformation of executive and senior management and community leadership was required to enable them to be effective in managing this complex set of circumstances.

Rock brittleness plays an important role in the cutting action of picks on rock surfaces. It controls the ease with which cracks can propagate through the rocks. Although rock brittleness is known as a property that contributes to the cuttability of rocks, despite considerable research effort, there is still much uncertainty about the relation between rock brittleness and rock cutting efficiency. This fact can be attributed to the lack of a universally accepted brittleness concept and a brittleness measurement method. The existing publications of some researchers have, in a way, tended to confuse the understanding of brittleness in the general field of rock excavation where it is expected that the energy consumption of cutting should decrease with increasing brittleness of rock, other conditions being equal. However, this sometimes conflicts with the brittleness concept commonly used in rock mechanics, where the more brittle the rock the higher its mechanical strength. The ratio of rock compressive strength to tensile strength is considered by many authors to give a valuable brittleness index for drag pick operations. Hence, in this contribution the ratio of uniaxial compressive strength to tensile strength BI is considered as an index of rock brittleness, and a new methodology is proposed for its use in rock cutting efficiency analyses of drag tool operations. Validation of the suggested approach is supported by available experimental data in the literature. Contrary to the conclusions reached previously by other authors, it is shown that an increase in rock brittleness is accompanied by an increase in the cutting efficiency, other conditions being equal. THE discovery that strongly magnetic bodies localized near the surface of the earth could be detected by the distortion which they produced in the resultant magnetic field marked the beginning of magnetic surveying methods. From an original ability to detect bodies of magnetic iron ore and the like when located very close to the, surface, these methods have been extended until today they promise to give much information with regard to the structure of such slightly magnetic material as sedimentary rock containing only a very small proportion of iron.1 The recent extensions have been made possible through the development of more delicate instruments, and of methods for their use. From the original compass and dip needle, the design of apparatus has progressed until equipment Is typified by magnetic balances capable of measuring the components of the earth's field to an extremely high degree of accuracy. It seems unlikely that the limit of such instrumental development has been reached. Just as the change from compass and dip needle has enabled the location of relatively minor changes in magnetic materials, so additional developments in the direction of increased sensitivity, as well as in greater dependability and constancy of operation, should reveal positively many slight changes which either escape notice in the present surveys or are so small that they cannot with certainty be separated from uncontrollable errors due to inconstant operation of the equipment. The ability to read smaller and smaller variations does not mean, of course, that deductions as to the causes of these variations will be made as accurately and definitely as -is possible with the more pronounced anomalies.
