The use of diesel engines in underground hard-rock mines dates back to the late 1940s. For the first several years, they were used only occasionally, being limited to a few metal mines that experimented with crawler¬mounted front-end loaders, tractor-trailer hauling units, a few tractors for drill-compressor mounts, and utility cleanup machines. By the mid-1950s, track loaders had become commonplace in limestone mines and uranium mines on the Colorado Plateau in the United States, as well as in Canada. Use of crawler-mounted tractors as drill and compressor mounts also increased. By the end of the 1950s, rubber-tired loaders and some haulers began to replace the track-type machines and rail-mounted cars that had been in use. About 1960, the rubber-tired machines brought about a new era of underground mining mobility and flexibility, centered on a method commonly known as "trackless mining." Ultimately, many of the underground rail-type systems for loading and hauling were replaced by the trackless mining technique. ECONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS The size and nature of mineral deposits, plus ground control techniques, historically had dictated small open¬ings to the surface from many underground mines. The small mine openings led to the development of special rubber-tired loaders and haulers designed specifically for access through the small openings. However, some mines, particularly those in massive mineral deposits, are able to excavate and maintain very large openings, and some use modified room-and-pillar systems. With the large mine openings, the use of larger, more produc¬tive equipment such as that commonly found in surface mining becomes economical. In fact, productivity gen¬erally increases at a more pronounced rate than machine size increases because many of the larger machines were designed for heavy-duty shot-rock applications in surface mines and construction sites where the handling of blasted rock is common. Combining greater productivity often inherent in larger machines, with reduced downtime resulting from using fully developed machines with fast parts and service backup, some mine operators have been able to reduce material handling costs appreciably while reduc¬ing manpower requirements for operators and main¬tenance men. Large mine openings increase the amount of rock that must be handled in the development work, and they sometimes increase the dilution in stopes or rooms, de¬pending upon the dimensions of the ore zone. Providing adequate space for the unrestricted operation of large surface mining machines could, therefore, lead to more waste segregation and handling costs. It could also cause greater ore dilution that would result in a lower grade of ore being delivered to the processing plant. The tradeoffs between opposing cost factors must be reconciled and balanced to achieve the best overall cost of the crude ore, concentrates, or product. EQUIPMENT MODIFICATIONS Loaders and haulers designed for surface mining are seldom used underground in their standard con¬figurations without some modifications. If done, the modifications generally are made by the equipment dealer and/or the user, and the modifications usually include one or more of the following items: 1) The exhaust stack is lowered, and its direction is changed. Usually, it is repositioned horizontally to the rear, or it is fed into the engine fan to diffuse the exhaust gases. 2) The operator's position is lowered by either lowering the seat or changing the seat to a side mount. 3) The operator controls are adjusted to fit the new operator position. 4) Other components, such as the radiator and loader tower, are lowered. 5) Special bumper guards are mounted at the base of the radiator area. 6) An exhaust conditioner is mounted and con¬nected, using either a catalytic or a water-type condi¬tioner, or both. Introduction The Greenhill mine of West Canadian Collieries, Limited, is on the Alberta side of the Crowsnest pass, twelve miles from the Alberta British Columbia boundary-line. Here, five coal seams of Lower Cretaceous age are found in the Kootenay formation. They outcrop on the north and south slopes of the valley, with strike approximately N.30°W., paralleling the main range of the Rocky mountains, and dip about 40 deg. westward. Of the five seams, only two, designated No. 1 and No. 2, have been worked to date. On the West Canadian Collieries property, No. 1 seam ranges in thickness from thirty feet to nil. Generally, it has a hard, strong conglomerate roof. No. 2 seam is separated from No. 1 by forty-five feet of shales and sandstones. It has a thickness of eight to thirty feet.

With high commodity prices, tightening operating budgets and increasing disposal costs, there is an increasing interest in processing municipal waste streams, such as the ash derived from combustion processes. This paper describes laboratory development work for a process to recover metal values from the finer fractions of these wastes. The work was initially aimed at recovery of copper and the removal of lead and other heavy metals from the ash residue, but results showed gold and silver recovery to be an important objective as well. The process uses gravity and flotation as the principal separation steps, with gold recovery occurring mainly in the flotation stage. The particle size range and chemistry of the ash presented numerous challenges to developing a suitable flotation method, but an effective flowsheet was developed by separating the ash into a fine fraction and a separate slime fraction, each with a unique flotation strategy. Specialized conditioning stages and careful reagent selection have resulted in effective gold and silver recovery from a range of ash types and sources. The work has resulted in a patent being issued for a process based on this novel approach to the treatment of combustion wastes.

As the Cadia mill was the first 40ft diameter SAG mill, commissioned in 1998, its performance, liner and discharge design attracted considerable international attention. Twelve years on, the liner design and the control philosophy are being readdressed to further improve the mill?s performance. A comprehensive series of 3D liner scans, over life of the liner, have been used to calibrate liner mass loss and progressive changes in the liner profile. This data is being used to provide true charge mass and mill filling, plus progressive trajectory profiles over life of liner. This information, along with measures of mill performance over liner life, is being used to select the optimal operating conditions as the liner wears, and hopes to inform future liner design.

INTRODUCTIONSince the Cadia mill was the first 40ft diameter SAG mill, its performance, liner and discharge design has attracted considerable international attention, as reported in previous SAG conferences. The mill experienced particular challenges with regard to pebble and slurry discharge, which necessitated a discharge redesign, incorporating a considerably greater pebble port open area and curved pulp lifters (Hart, Valery, Clements, Reed, Song & Dunne, 2001). Packing between lifter bars on the shell liner was found to dramatically reduce mill throughput over the first half of the liner life. In response, the liners were redesigned to a 2/3 spacing so as to open up the space between lifters. Due to ongoing high liner wear issues, the liner was redesigned based on the discrete element modelling (DEM) of Conveyor Dynamics conducted by Nordell and Potapov (2001). This aimed to maintain mill throughput with new liners and provide an extended liner life. This design was kept proprietary for many years, so has not been open to review."

"Geotechnical engineering and construction primarily relies on the subsurface characteristics of the particular site; however, obtaining both accurate and precise information on those features is challenging due to the numerous factors involved in testing procedures used to analyze varying site geology. This includes a detailed and thorough geotechnical investigation to understand the site conditions, allowing the implementation of the most practical and economical solution.This paper presents a case history of the installation of wick drains and construction of aggregate piers on the site of a large facility to be constructed in Memphis, Tennessee. Throughout intensive subsurface investigations, highly variable soils were encountered, requiring settlement control and increased bearing capacity. This paper will discuss the design and installation of the systems constructed, and procedures and execution of the work to ensure design specifications were achieved.BackgroundA 1.4 million square foot expansion directly adjacent to an existing 1.1 million square foot distribution facility in Memphis, Tennessee was planned to serve as a centralized facility for increased production. The first phase of construction included an 858,000 square foot warehouse and parking lot for approximately 400 trucks to the north of the existing structure. The anticipated column load for the warehouse was 125 kips; slab design bearing pressures ranged from 200 to 500 pounds per square foot (psf) and elevations ranged from EL. 264 to 282. Parking lot elevations ranged from EL. 264 to 290, requiring a design life of 10 years with an estimated 100 in- and out-bound trucks daily and maximum weight of 80 kips per truck. The second phase of construction took place east of the existing structure, and included a 794,000 square foot multi-level warehouse, a 100,000 square foot office, and additional employee parking. The anticipated column load for the second warehouse was 225 kips and slab design bearing pressures ranged from 200 to 500 psf. Elevations ranged from EL. 267 to 282. Anticipated column loads from the office were 25 125 kips, with slab design bearing pressures ranging from 100 to 200 psf. Due to the varying elevations within each planned footprint, up to 18 feet of new fill was required to match the existing structure’s finished floor elevation (FFE) at EL. 282."

It is common practice, and even legally required in many jurisdictions, to design two-lane haul roads in open pit mines to three and a half times the widest dimension of the haul trucks operating on the road. In open pit gold mines with high strip ratios, the road width has a significant impact on the economics of a design. It is possible to minimize the flattening of the highwall if the road width is reduced, assuming the width used is not needed to flatten the slopes for geotechnical purposes. With the use of autonomous haulage and pullouts, it may be possible to operate safely and efficiently on a reduced road width of two times the width of the hauling equipment.

"The introduction of the QuarryMan laser profile system in 1987, along with the development of the corresponding 3-D software, gave a qualified operator pertinent information about dimensions of quarry highwalls, pattern and hole loading design, stockpile profiles, etc . . . Attributes helpful for this endeavor included surveying, computer, and blasting knowledge. Since not all operators had theseskills, a simpler model, the QuarryAce, was designed to look a t highwall dimensions in 2-D view . Al though less sophisticated than the QuarryMan instrument and its software, it is simpler to instruct in its use and has the ability to determine burdens at different depth levels . An in-house user f r i e n d l y computer program was designed to utilize QuarryAce depth vs. burden data . This program was created to enable laser and computer novices to generate information useful to the everyday blaster."

"INTRODUCTION Mining is a fundamental part of the historical and economic development of a country. In Colombia, this is reflected from pre-Columbian jewelery, to being now one of the first exporters of coal worldwide, in 2017, the Colombian mining sector contributed approximately 6% of GDP (Ministerio de Minas y Energía, 2017). Coal, nickel, gold, platinum, emeralds, limestone, salt, phosphate rock, clays, siliceous sands and to a lesser extent copper, manganese, magnesite, barite, gypsum and various types of ornamental rocks, among others are produced (UPME, 2016). The contributions of mining activity in the economic dimension is more measurable, on the contrary in other dimensions, as the social and environmental, for this, every day there are new proposals and tools oriented to strengthen how to evaluate the contributions in terms of the sustainability and responsibility, with the aim of quantifying, concreting and non-utopian, to improve the life quality of a community and not only to comply with reporting and gaining prestige. Colombia has a generalized increase in the mining sector where the levels of informality and illegality are evident only 10% of mining activity is legal (UPME, 2014), also, the mining sector is accused of human rights violations, high levels of inequality, poverty and the affectation of ecosystems due to bad environmental management, among other situations (ACNUDH Colombia, 2015). This problem has generated rejection to the realization of the mining activity in many places of Colombia. At this point, it is important to clarify this problem is more complex, different actors are involved in this conflict, but it is an evidence that is needed a sustainability model for specific realities such as the Colombian mining. This situation in the current mining activity, is similar to the chemical industry situation three decades ago, because of an extensive problem in relation to repeated work accidents, natural disasters and indications as a highly polluting and unsustainable industry, with the aim of improving, not only this public perception, but also in the way of carrying out the business activity. Thus, in 1985, the Canadian Chemical Producers Association released the Responsible Care Program (RCP) (ICCA, 2015). Being aware that companies were responsible for the affected lives in some way by the operation and needed to improve workers safety, environmental protection and most importantly how legal persons should comply with the law, but go beyond this. RCP is most recognized sustainability initiative in the chemical sector, companies associated are recognized for having high quality standards, continuous improvement, visibility, corporate ethics, environmental and social management (ACC, 2015). In addition, to meeting the objectives is set out the creation of a model that increasing reputational sector levels. This initiative is considered to be a worldwide successful case of reporting corporate responsibility indicators and contributions to sustainability from the industry sector to local development (BASF Group, 2016)."

A flotation process has been developed to successfully treat ore from the Santo Domingo phosphate deposit in Baja California Sur. The ore contained less than four percent P205 with quartz, silicates, and carbonates as gangue minerals. Flotation of the low grade feed In sea water required that the conventioinal Crago Process, comprising direct anionic flotation, deolling, and inverse cationic flotation be augmented by an anionic cleaner flotation step, phosphate depression, and a calcite flotation step.

Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) is a copper, gold and magnetite mining and processing operation located 38km north east of Cloncurry. The EHM ore body has an average grade of 0.9% copper (chalcopyrite), 0.5g/t gold and 22% magnetite.Open pit mining commenced in March 1998, but EHM transitioned to underground mining in December 2012, extending the life of operations beyond 2024. The underground mine currently produces up to 3Mt/year of ore, hauled up a decline by truck. This figure shall double in 2014 with the completion of a 1000m shaft. The EHM Concentrator has a nameplate capacity of 10Mt/year. In June 2011, Xstrata Copper acquired the Mount Margaret resource to supplement underground production and utilise the full capacity of the Concentrator. The Mount Margaret Mining (MMM) operation was established to develop the five deposits making up the resource by way of open pit mining.Copper concentrate is produced by the EHM Concentrator via grinding, flotation and dewatering circuits. The grinding circuit comprises a SAG and ball mill in a closed AB configuration. Flotation consists of a rougher train, regrind and three stages of cleaning, with the tail from the first stage reporting to the tailings thickener.The mineralogy of the MMM ores is complex, comprising fine textures of active pyrite, copper oxides, native copper, clay and secondary copper sulphides. This paper provides an overview of the metallurgical test work completed to forecast the performance of the MMM ores through the EHM Concentrator and identify flow sheet modifications for maximising copper recovery and producing a saleable concentrate. Mine managers need better information to locate new opportunities and then to assess the effect of their decisions. We are developing the Intelligent Decision Support System (IDSS) and its two major modules, the Pattern Recognition System (PRS) and the Knowledge Representation Subsystem (KRS) to automatically provide the information from monitoring system sensors. This paper focuses on the KRS Algorithms that extract key information from lists of time study type event sequences. Because a static system cannot operate effectively in a dynamic mining environment, we are prototyping an index based technique that allows the system to adapt itself to this dynamic environment.

"Intrepid Potash, Inc.’s Carlsbad East facility has refined sylvite and produced muriate of potash (MOP) since 1965. In addition to MOP, Intrepid Potash began recovering the mineral langbeinite from a mixed ore reserve in 2005. In 2011 a new langbeinite recovery process for the coarse (+850 micron) size fraction was constructed to enhance the overall langbeinite recovery. Based on the limited mixed ore reserve and an abundance of langbeinite ore reserves the transition of the East plant to a langbeinite only facility was targeted for 2021. Due to a decreasing grade of the mixed ore reserve, declining sales pricing, and high sylvite operating costs a strategic decision was made to accelerate this transition into 2016. To enable a successful transition, a fines recovery system needed to be developed, constructed and implemented. This paper describes the advancement of langbeinite processing at Intrepid Potash and the planning, development and successful execution of the transition to a langbeinite only operation. BACKGROUND Langbeinite (K2SO4·2MgSO4) is a double salt containing potassium sulfate (K2SO4) and magnesium sulfate (MgSO4). It is used as fertilizer and in the industry is described as Sulfate of Potash Magnesia. It is attractive as a specialty fertilizer and in addition to containing a ready source of a primary nutrient potassium, it also provides two secondary essential nutrients, magnesium and sulfur. It is especially attractive for chloride sensitive crops. Langbeinite has a specific gravity of 2.8, a Mohs hardness of 4.2, and is brittle thus very friable. It is the hardest of the saline minerals, and despite its relative softness on the Mohs scale can be very abrasive in process environments and in field applications, probably due to its conchoidal cleavage. Its solubility at 240 g/l is less than the solubility of sylvite (KCl) or halite (NaCl) and due to even slower relative dissolution kinetics washing with cold water has been a common practice for upgrading langbeinite ores. The solubilization/crystallization relationship for langbeinite is different from the majority of other evaporite minerals in that once langbeinite is solubilized it does not form langbeinite again. Instead it gives up one mole of magnesium sulfate, takes on various waters of hydration and precipitates out as either schoenite (K2SO4·MgSO4·6H2O) or leonite (K2SO4·MgSO4·4H2O) depending on temperature. Due to its partial solubility and phase transitions at its surface when exposed to moisture, there is strong cohesion between wetted particles; the resulting stickiness of the upgraded products can create significant materials handling issues unless processed in slurry form or at relatively low moisture levels. Langbeinite has been produced commercially from two locations, the Kalush and Stebnik regions in the Cartpathian Mountains of former Poland and now the Ukraine and from the Permian Basin in New Mexico (Garrett, 1996; Smith 1949). Current production is from two operators in the U.S., Mosaic and Intrepid Potash."

"This paper presents a case study demonstrating active geotechnical pit slope management at the now completed Carina Iron Ore Project operated by Mineral Resources Ltd (MRL). The site is located 105 km north-east of Southern Cross, Western Australia. The paper is primarily focused on the slope stability failure modes and the remedial measures employed to maintain mining.Between a quarter and a third of the excavated slopes were impacted by some form of instability that was beyond expectations of the intended slope design criteria and common practice. Ongoing mining was supported by intensive geotechnical pit slope management including close cooperation between geotechnical, mine planning and operations staff to achieve timely and practical mining solutions.Mining encountered varied slope failure mechanisms which required a combination of remedial solutions comprising: horizontal depressurisation holes, deferral of excavation, unloading, buttressing and catch berms.The root cause of the challenging slope performance was a mismatch between the predicted and encountered geotechnical model, resulting from a failure to recognise the critical mechanisms that control slope stability.Despite the extensive zones of instabilities at completion of mining, full ore recovery was achieved without major delays and in a controlled and safe manner.Citation:Fowler, M, Strang, D and Jaine, R, 2016. The Lac des Iles Mine (LDI) is located approximately 100 km northwest of Thunder Bay, ON. The mine has been in operation since 1993. The initial mine production was 2,300 mtpd and increased to 15,000 mtpd following a mine expansion project that was completed in 2001. Effective Oct. 29, 2008, LDI was shut-down under care and maintenance due to low metal prices. Prior to shutting down, LDI was the only primary PGM deposit in operation in Canada and of the few found globally. The complex geology and physical properties of the deposit causes several challenges for the concentrator. This paper will discuss the solutions to the main challenges of attaining nameplate tonnage and achieve satisfactory Pd recovery and concentrate grades.

The use of frozen soil as ground improvement and temporary ground support for the excavation and construction of cross passages and adits has gained in popularity over the last decade. Frozen soil provides a number of advantages for this application such as being waterproof, structurally stable, and working well with any soil type. One of the greatest advantages is the ability for the system to be adaptable to the project geometry and site limitations. Multiple case histories illustrate that freezing can occur from the ground surface, from within the tunnel, or as a combination.

"INTRODUCTIONIn view of a global trend towards urbanization, more and more trunk sewers and combined sewer overflow tunnels (CSO) with medium to large diameters and the corresponding link sewers are currently built and under design. Shielded tunnel boring machines using segmental lining as tunnel support represent an efficient solution for construction of new wastewater and supply tunnels. Especially in the field of sewers, the durability of concrete structures both exposed to any groundwater present on its exterior and to aggressive waste water as well as gases on its interior is a key requirement. Despite thorough research on segmental lining and mechanized tunneling machinery, conventional thermoplastic liners show comparatively minimal progress in terms of practical advancements. This is in contrast with the development of the latest segment embedded high density polyethylene (HDPE) system. Based on experiences achieved, this paper discusses the latest development of an integral protective lining system in respect of material characteristics and its adaptability to both project and customers’ demands. Reviewed performances, as the bondage behavior of the embedded HDPE system at axial stress loads due to acting thrust cylinders during ring build as well as the ability to drain pressurized water behind the embedded membrane, tested at full scale segments, are also presented. The paper is round off by presenting first details of sewer projects endeavoring to utilize this cutting-edge solution for an integral concrete protection, which will be commenced beginning of 2016.CASE HISTORIES ENCOURAGE ADVANCEMENTS Past experience has shown that unprotected concrete surfaces as well as chemical based linings such as coatings, sprayed linings and cured in-place-systems cannot reach the desired life times. Also the fact that in deep tunnel sewer system hardly maintenance is possible, a durable and maintenance free system is required which only can be reached by applying mechanical anchored HDPE (CPL)."
