The distribution of sulfur in iron was found to be dependent upon the time and temperature of the treatment as well as the chemical composition of the sulfide. With higher temperatures, the sulfide phase spreads more extensively between the iron grains. A complete network, however, does not form until approximately 1300°C (2372°F), ot which temperature the dihedral angle approaches zero. Silicon has little effect on this change. Aluminum, oxygen, and manganese all modify the temperature of sulfide network formation to a higher value. The microstructures which result and have significance in relation to hot-shortness are discussed. SULFIDE inclusions in steel were recognized by metallurgists before the turn of the century. Considerable attention has been paid to them, and numerous studies have been made on the working properties of steel as affected by them. It has been suggested that ho t-shortness of steel is due to the presence of an enveloping liquid sulfide film at the grain boundaries of the steel in the range of the hot-working temperatures. However, several facts have been observed in commercial steels which do not seem to be completely consistent with this explanation: 1) the frequent absence of continuous films of sulfide as observed under the microscope, 2) the absence of hot-shortness in some high sulfur and resulfurized steels, and 3) the limitation of hot-shortness to a definite temperature range. The role that manganese plays in steel to eliminate hot-shortness is well known, but the theory behind it is still under question. Moreover, the effect of de-oxidizers such as aluminum and silicon, and the effect of oxygen are still not clearly known. In this study, the effect of heat treatments and of additions of manganese, aluminum, silicon, and oxygen upon the distribution of sulfide inclusions in iron was investigated. Both the as-cast and the heat treated structures were studied, using microscopic and autoradiographic techniques. Part of the results were interpreted in terms of Smith's' concept of microstructure. Review of Literature Metallurgists used to consider sulfide inclusions as suspended particles. It was Wohrman' who first pointed out that sulfide inclusions are soluble in liquid iron. Many observed facts may be understood on the basis of this concept of solubility. Wohrman found that small castings contain small inclusions. and larger castings contain larger ones. Also, inclusion sizes are smaller near the chilled surface. For the same size ingot, the average inclusion size in a given heat of steel depends upon the rate of solidification. "The Crandall Canyon Mine (CCM) is located in the Wasatch coal field in central Utah. Extensive longwall mining at CCM preceded a decision to recover coal left in barrier pillars on each side of a set of main entries extending far into the mine. During mining in March 2007, a major bump occurred that led to cessation of mining in the barrier pillar on the north side of the mains and to the start of mining in the south barrier pillar. Subsequent loss of ground control in August 2007, through coal pillar bursts had tragic consequences with loss of six miners and shortly afterward three rescue team members. A U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)report describes the events in detail (MSHA, 2008).An important lesson to be learned from CCM is the need to select a computer program suitable for pillar design. Computer programs are engineering tools and selecting the right tool for the job is essential. In this regard, minimum program requirements include capability for computing stress distribution within a pillar and adjacent roof and floor strata. The reason is simple: strength of rock is stress dependent; both vary from point to point in pillars and adjacent strata. Preferably, one should follow the evolution of stress as the mining plan is executed from start to finish to assure safety or to warn of a potentially hazardous situation developing as mining progresses.The approach to the problem posed by barrier pillar mining at CCM is conventional in the sense of applying well known finite element modeling techniques to analysis of a proposed mining plan. The engineering purpose is to evaluate the mining plan with respect to ground control questions including roof, floor and pillar safety. Results of previous two-dimensional finite element analysis indicated pillar safety was by no means assured (MSHA, 2008; Pariseau, 2008; Pariseau, 2011). Geometry of barrier pillar mining is limited in two dimensions for example, crosscuts are not seen in vertical cross sections. While three-dimensional analyses are preferred, even moderately sized regions often lead to very large problem sizes that exceed computer capabilities. However, a recent development in finite element modeling of tabular deposits allows for whole mine analysis in three dimensions. This technique involves a dual node - dual mesh concept. Both have been used separately in much earlier work, but are only now used in combination. It is possible to have an estimation of subsidence at a kilometer scale and details of stress, strain and displacement about barrier pillars, main entries and pillars, and so on at a meter scale (Pariseau, 2014). No compromise involving empirical formulas or similar guess work is required. Indeed, all calculations are based on first principles: physical laws, kinematics, and material laws. Effects of joints and in situ variability or uncertainty in strata properties, elastic moduli and strengths, may be included for greater realism. An important objective of the present study is to assess the role of three-dimensional pillar geometry in arriving at conclusions regarding barrier pillar mining versus two-dimensional results."

Information to assist them in making the decision to retreat mine and in selecting the best retreat mining technique for specific mining conditions. 2. Information on mine planning that will enable them to design mine layouts for safe and efficient retreat mining. 3. Information that will enable them to develop a section foreman's handbook. The manual has been organized to gradually increase in level of detail as the reader progresses from beginning to end. Individuals interested in an overview of retreat mining can confine themselves to the first few chapters. Those interested in mine planning, should read the middle chapters as well. Those interested in the development of a foreman's handbook should read the entire manual.

Introduction The Hollinger cyanidation mill commenced operating in June, 1912, and 49,779,978 tons of solids had been discarded by the end of 1950. The present tailing disposal plant has been in operation since 1924 and holds 39,762,250 tons. The tailing disposal plant is on the property of Kayorum Gold Mines, Limited, about a mile and a quarter south of the mill. The area available for tailing covers 640 acres and is roughly l ¼ miles long by ¾ mile wide. Tailing was first deposited on the McKay veteran claims, l mile long by 1/2 mile wide, which were later included in the Kayorum property. This site sloped from northeast to southwest, the slope amounting to 106 feet between the northeast corner and the low land to the southwest. The low land was wet and a considerable area was covered with muskeg up to 17 feet deep. It was drained by a brook running across the property in a southwesterly direction. Later, when more ground was needed, the low-lying mining claims adjacent to the south and west boundaries were acquired to allow for the extension of the plant. This entailed some extra difficulties and expense that would not have been encountered had the whole of the present site been acquired with the original purchase. At the present time, the top of the tailing deposit stands at two elevations, but eventually the tailing deposited on the extension to the original plant will be raised to the same height as the older deposit. Previous to 1924, all of the tailing was deposited on Low land and in lakes near the mil1. Between 1924 and 1926 an increasing tonnage was sent to the McKay claims until, in 1926, all of it was being sent there. In 1936, the area of the deposit was extended and shortly afterwards all of the tailing was deposited on the new site.

Pre-splitting was substituted for line drilling to achieve stable rock slopes and reduce excavation beyond the pay line on a Connecticut highway project in 1962-63. Changes have occurred in developing rock slopes that were not foreseen by Alan Bauer and Jim Scott who in the early days understood the relationship of explosive energy to stable slopes. Cushion blasting as currently used produces slopes designed to blend or complement the natural landscape with slope holes detonated after the main body of holes. Pre-splitting is the opposite. The best results have been achieved by detonating the pre-split line of the holes first to allow readjustment of the slope plane fracture and a separate blast for the main body of loaded holes.

Despite the fact that a great many industrial processes depend on efficient contact between a gas stream and a bed of broken solids for their operation, the data in the literature are very meager. Several investigations3 have been undertaken, but the work has been limited in scope and application. BUREAU OF MINES PROGRAM OF RESEARCH For the past 10 years the United States Bureau of Mines has been engaged in research with the object of formulating a more or less complete quantitative theory of the workings of the iron blast furnace. Obviously, in order to do this one of the essentials is to have considerable definite information on the laws of gas flow through beds of broken solids. This report in a brief summary of the experimental work on the problem which has been done at the North Central Experiment Station. The complete report with more detailed tabulation of the data and explanations of the experimental procedure is in process of publication in the form of a bulletin.

The report provides guidance for determining those environmental impacts associated with the surface mining of steeply pitching coal seams. In addition to the environmental impacts, four additional issues are addressed, namely (1) Time and motion studies of those coal mining systems employed in mining seams which pitch in excess of 250, (2) Assessment of those mining techniques, (3) Development of rationale for the mining methods employed, (4) Identification of the reclamation practices and determine whether these practices were in compliance with appropriate Federal and State regulations. Five surface mines located in three geologically distinct basins of the United States were analyzed during the period of August through November 1979. The three basins include the Hanna Basin of Wyoming, the North Park Basin of Colorado and the Southern Anthracite Field of Pennsylvania.

Although chromite deposits occur in California , Oregon, Washington, Montana, Wyoming , Pennsylvania, Maryland , New Mexico , North Carolina, Alaska, and the Phillippine Islands , less than 1 percent of the ore used in the United States is obtained from these deposits . Most of the ore in peacetime has been supplied by imports from South Africa, New Caledonia, Turkey, and Cuba . The mineral chromite , the most important chromium ore , is an isometric spinel with an ideal composition of FeO Cr2O3 , but commercial chromite has the variable composition (Fe , Mg) Oʻ (Cr , Al , Fe) 203. Chromite has a black color , a specific gravity of 4.4 , and a hardness of 5.5 . In thin section the color is reddish -brown to black . Chromite occurs in dunite and pyroxenitic ultrabasic rocks , which are composed of iron- magnesium silicate minerals such as olivine , saxonite , serpentine , and enstatite . These are also the gangue minerals . Com mercial ore occurs at random in the country rock in kidney- or lens - shaped deposits , which have no apparent relationship to each other . Stringers , veins , and bands often cut the country rock without regard either to fracture or to other deposits . Some beach sands , such as those in southern Oregon, contain chromite .

The term" sandstone" is applied to a rock composed of mineral grains smaller than pebbles, cemented together more or less firmly. "Conglomerate" is the name given to a rock composed of pebbles, or pebbles and bowlders, of various sizes cemented together. If the pebbles are large and well rounded the rock is sometimes called " pudding stone." Although the term "sandstone" includes all varieties, certain specific terms are applied to types characterized by particular compositions, colors, or uses. "Quartzite" is a variety in which the individual grains are so firmly cemented together with quartz that the rock will fracture as easily through the grains as through the cement; "ferruginous sandstone" is one rich in iron as cementing material, or as grains, or both; "micaceous sandstone" is one in which mica is prominent; " arkose" is a feldspathic or granitic sandstone composed of angular grains; "calcareous sandstone" is one containing considerable calcium carbonate; and" argillaceous sandstone" is one containing considerable clay. The term "flagstone" is used for a rock that splits readily into sheets suitable for flagging; "freestone" for rock than can be cut or carved readily, and with equal ease in all directions; and" ganistel'," in the United States, for sandstone suitable for the manufacture of refractories. Others are named from their characteristic colors such as " bluestone," " redstone," or " brownstone."

To develop a conceptual design for an automated longwall mining system, one should know what has been done, what is being done today and what is being planned for tomorrow. The bibliography referenced and discussed in this report provides a good source for that knowledge. To scientifically determine where attention should be focused to up-grade a system, the system must be quantized as far as possible. The Mechanization Profile of Appendix A-I is discussed in this report and has been used to analyze and determine the degree of mechanization currently in use and/or described in the literature for all three major elements of the long-wall system, namely, Winning, Roof Support and Haulage. The charted profiles make it self-evident where attention and design effort is needed to remove human operators from the face of the mine.

In our work as health physicists*, we do a lot of public speaking and interaction with the public on issues related to development of uranium mining and milling (?uranium recovery?) in the US. Understandingly, the public has important concerns about this. Accordingly, this paper is presented in a ?question and answer? format in which we have tried to capture what are some of the most common concerns we hear from citizens and address them. We have attempted to do so based on the best scientific information we have, representing information well documented in peer-reviewed scientific literature and consensus positions from both national and international scientific standard setting bodies and related committees. We have included some of the more important of these scientifically-based references to support the information provided. Several studies have suggested that pulmonary toxicity to asbestos and silica may be mediated through oxidant-induced cell injury. We have reported recently that surface radicals associated with freshly fractured silica may be an imponant factor in cell injury and induction of pulmonary disease. Although the generation of oxygenated radicals in dust-cell interactions has been demonstrated, there are no data correlating the toxicity of a dust with the level of oxygen radical generation by the dust during its interaction with phagocytic cells. In the present study, we have investigated the in vitro generation of oxygen free radicals from human neutrophils and rat alveolar macrophages stimulated with freshly fractured silica, aged silica, amosite, crocidolite, chrysotilc, and a nontoxic dust, barite. Electron spin resonance (ESR) with the aid of a spin trap phenyl-N-ten-butyl nitronc (PBN) was used to measure the oxygen radicals generated during phagocytosis of the dusts. The relative toxicity index and ESR peak heights, on an equal surface area basis and normalized to barite as one, showed a direct relationship. The normalized toxicity indices and peak heights were: silica, 3.5 versus 2; chrysotile, 4 versus 2; crocidolite, 11 versus 8; and amosite, 26 versus 13. Addition of hydroxyl radical scavengers such as catalase, dimethyl sulfoxide, 1,3 dimethyl-2-thiourea (DMTU), sodium benzoate, and mannitol prevented the radical generation. Carmustine, a glutathione reductase- glutathione peroxidase inhibitor, caused a 5-fold increase in the radical generation. These results indicate that a nontoxic dust such as barite generates toxic oxygen radicals at a minimal level that can be quenched by the normal cellular defense system. For toxic dusts such as silica, amositc, chrysotile, and crocidolite, the potential for oxygen radical generation is enhanced by their surface propenies, physical dimensions, and the surface-based radical-generating redox sites. The enhanced radical generation may impair the cellular defense system, resulting in cell injury. Use of scavengers, chelators, and potentiating agents suggests the membrane-based oxidase system as the probable primary source of the radical-generating system. The data presented herein suggest the generation of oxygen free radicals as an important primary event in silica- as well as asbestos-induced cell injury.

Experience with knowledge-based systems for Layout planning and roadway support dimensioning is on hand in European coal mining since 1985. The systems SOUT (support choice and dimensioning, 1989), SOUT 2, PLANANK (planning of bolt-support), EXOS (layout planning diagnosis. 1994), Sout 3 (1995) have been developed in close cooperation by CdF1. INERIS2. EMN3 (France) and RAG 4, DMT5, TH - Aachen6 (Germany); ISLSP (Integrated Software for Layout and support planning) development is in progress (completion scheduled for July 1996). This new software technology in combination with conventional programming systems. numerical models and existing databases turned out to be suited for setting-up an intelligent decision aid for layout and roadway support planning. The system enhances reliability of planning and optimises the safety-to-cost ratio for ? deformation forecast for roadways in seam and surrounding rocks, consideration of the general position of the roadway in the rock mass (zones of increased pressure, position of operating and mined panels). ? support dimensioning ? yielding arches, rigid arches, porch sets, rigid rings, yielding rings and bolting / shotcreting for drifts ? yielding arches, rigid arches and porch sets for roadways in seam ? bolt support for gateroads (assessment of exclusion criteria and calculation of the bolting pattern) ? bolting of face-end zones (feasibility and safety assessment, stability guarantee).

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the development of a protective operator compartment for a new generation thin-seam mobile bridge carrier. The developed compartment is commercially available and is currently employed on approximately 15 bridge carriers used in the mining industry. The design of the compartment, which employed human factors engineering and small- and full-scale mockup models, is fully described. Details of the compartment's fabrication, evaluation, and demonstration in a commercial low-seam coal mine are also provided.

Silicon metal as a commodity material is produced by carbothermic reduction of quartz in electric submerged arc furnaces, where CO2 forms as a by-product. Since 1997 the Norwegian Ferroalloy Producers Association have been engaged in research programmes aiming for reduced CO2-emissions associated with fossil carbon in their processes. One important issue has been to study how charcoal and wood chips perform compared to coal and coke in the silicon process. The ability of the carbon-rich reduction materials to react with SiO-gas is commonly assumed to be of large importance to the performance of the process. Based on laboratory experiments with different carbon materials, combined with estimation of parameters in a mathematical model of the reaction between carbon and SiO-gas, a foundation for a theoretical study of the performance of the carbon materials in a silicon furnace is established.

TRANSFER to the Bureau of Mines of the responsibility for conservation and production of helium, and announcement that a proposal has been made to the President for commercial operation of the Los Angeles has attracted new attention to the helium program of the Government. The matter is one in which mining engineers, and the mining industry in general, have a peculiar interest. Helium is a byproduct of the petroleum and natural gas industry. It is found in certain of the natural gases which have themselves been discovered, in the main, in the search for oil. If it is to be produced on a large scale, the conservation and development of the fields will necessarily be done by the men of the oil and gas industry. There is no known or expected source of supply of quantities of commercial importance save in the natural gas fields. Not all gas wells supply helium and none of them supply it in important percentages. If it were necessary to prospect a field, develop it, lay pipe lines and build production plants for the helium alone, the cost would be prohibitive. On that basis helium would necessarily be restricted to essential war uses, where cost is subordinate to need. As a byproduct of the natural gas in certain, at least, of the fields in the United States there is distinct reason for anticipating that it may be produced in amounts and at a cost that will permit its regular use in commercial airships.

[Nine wire rope terminations were pull tested and fatigue tested to destruction to measure the termination efficiency and relative fatigue life. The terminations were selected on the basis off mine site visits and the specimen were assembled in a manner similar to industrial slings. To measure a termination's sensitivity to poor workmanship, both standard and modified assembly specimen were tested. Lang and Regular construction of the 6x19 and 6x37 class wire ropes were used in diameters of 13 mm (1/2 in.), 19 mm (3/4 in.), 25 mm (1 in.), 38 mm (1 1/2 in.), and 51 mm (2 in.). In static pull tests rope class, construction, and diameter interacted with the termination to influence the efficiency of the termination. In axial fatigue tests using only the 6x19 class rope, the effect of rope construction was negligible since failure was primarily dependent on the termination type. The Swaged Socket, a termination requiring a high capacity hydraulic press, gave the best overall performance in terms of efficiency and fatigue life. The short body length of the Zinc Poured Socket (RR-S-550) was attributed with the short fatigue life of this termination. The use of thermosetting resins as a replacement for zinc was demonstrated successfully for some socket designs. The fatigue life of the termination, expressed as a percentage of the fatigue life of the wire rope, was shown to be a guide for the retirement of the wire in these applications where the wiry' rope is primarily in axial loading.]

Gases and vapors given off by petroleum and its products have long been recognized as somewhat injurious, when inhaled in high enough concentrations. The petroleum industry has recognized these effects and has tried to minimize the possibility of employees encountering dangerous concentrations of the vapors. Petroleum gases and vapors have not, however, been considered as actively poisonous, in the sense that hydrocyanic (prussic) acid and phosgene are poisonous; men have been exposed to them repeatedly, and for long periods, without any marked ill effects. Light Mexican crude oil when first introduced into the United States for refining was handled in much the same way as was customary with other apparently similar crudes; but experience soon showed that some toxic substance escaped from the crude during production and transportation and in most of the refinery operations. After a preliminary investigation several of the larger companies decided that the gases from the petroleum were the source of trouble, and therefore took precautions, wherever possible, to protect the men from exposure to these gases. With the increasing use of Mexican crude, this problem has become important. The present report covers the work done on the subject by the Bureau of Mines and the Public Health Service under a cooperative agreement with the American Petroleum Institute.
