Published tables of jaw crusher capacities are compiled for the most part from field performance data, interspersed with interpolations, extrapolations, various safety factors, and other modifications. Such a table attempts to balance and equalize field data from widely different materials, with differences of crushability, efficiency of feeding, sizing of the feed, and so on. The tests described in this paper were undertaken with the objectives of checking previously reported capacities; of studying the effects of various factors upon the capacity, including jaw plate curvature; and, if possible, of deriving a general capacity equation. Such an equation has been derived from the data obtained in these tests. It is given together with factors for its use. While more accuracy than is usually required may be obtained by careful application of the equation, it is of simple form and provides a convenient reference plane upon which the potential capacity of various crushers may be compared, and with which operating adjustments may be made on existing installations. Its mission is to carry out laboratory and field studies that will assure the wise and effective development and use of our Nation's minerals, fuels, and underground domain in order to preserve the security and enhance the welfare of our people. Specifically, studies are directed to the means by which current and emerging demands may be met, the real cost of such achievements, and the assessment of related social and economic factors. Ways are sought to fulfill our material needs in a manner that minimizes occupational hazards to workers in the industry, reduces waste, and ensures that mineral raw materials are supplied and mineral-based products are used and are disposed of efficiently, without objectionable social and environmental costs. The headquarters of the Bureau of Mines is located in Washington, D.C. The Bureau's research and development program, however, is conducted at 19 research centers and laboratories located throughout the United States.

Sin embargo, la industria minera logró superarlos, mejorando la tecnología del minado, mecanización y racionalización de sus operaciones. De otro lado, el uso de métodos de minado por cuartos y pilares ha disminuído, mientras que los de corte y relleno y de subniveles se han incrementado. A esto se suma que la utilización de brocas "TC" y del "AN-FO", mejoraron la eficiencia del minado y redujeron los costos. En este sentido, el presente texto señala los últimos avances en tecnología minera a partir de los métodos de extracción, perforación, así como el empleo de relleno de tajeos con relaves de flotación, logrando un desarrollo en la seguridad y eficiencia de la minería subterránea.

Triboelectric Separation - Beneficiation of Coal The performance of triboelectric separators is highly sensitive to the selectivity of the particle charging process. This paper presents a quantitative study on triboelectric coal beneficiation. The performance of different charging media was studied. Stainless steel was identified as having a work function between that of coal and silicate gangue and found to be the optimum charging medium for coal beneficiation. Recent results from separation tests were performed where silicate gangue was separated from crude coal using a parallel plate free-fall separator are illustrated.

The 1,280 MW Sir Adam Beck II Hydroelectric Project was constructed in the1950s, at Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. The twin intake tunnels total over 17 kilometers in length and pass deep below the City of Niagara Falls. The tunnels were excavated using drill and blast methods, with a top heading and bench approach. The shot rock was loaded with electric shovels and transported to the five shafts with off-highway trucks. The tunnel muck was hoisted to the surface by skip and transported by truck to disposal areas. The volume of underground excavation for the 15.55 meter diameter tunnels and the shafts exceeds 3,500,000 cubic meters, then and now the largest underground civil works excavation by drill and blast in the Western Hemisphere. The lining required over 900,000 cubic meters of concrete. All of this work was completed in three years, remarkable progress, considering the technology of the day, comparing very well with the rapid excavation and tunneling methods of the twenty-first century. Big, fast, and deadly—at least 20 lives were lost in construction accidents.

Between March and June 1962, the privilege of holding a Carnegie Corporation Fellowship enabled R. A. L. Black to travel extensively in the northeastern and western U.S. and in Canada, seeing mining schools, mining research establishments and a cross-section of the American and Canadian mining industry. Visits were paid to 12 university mining schools, 7 research establishments and 19 mining operations. The author had previously spent two months in Britain in a similar manner and eventually returned to his home in South Africa after a short period studying mining problem in Australia. Thus, although the following remarks are mainly concerned with the educational problems of mining in North America, a comparison of impressions of American and Canadian conditions could be made with impressions gained from first-hand experience of other mining centers in the English-speaking world. The conclusion was reached that the problems and conditions of mining, research and mining education are very similar in all areas visited.

THE Institute assembled in Packer Hall of the Lehigh University, the President, Mr. David Thomas, of Catasauqua in the chair. Professor Henry Coppée, President of the Lehigh University, made an address of welcome to the Institute, and placed at its disposal a convenient hall for purposes of meeting. Mr. Thomas tendered his resignation as President of the Institute, as advancing years prevented him from actively participating in its meetings. The Institute declined to accept the resignation, and, on the assurance that active duties would not be expected of him, Mr. Thomas was induced to withdraw it. Invitations were received from Mr. B. C. Webster, President of the Lehigh Zinc Company, to visit the mines and works of the company; from Mr. Charles Brodhead, to visit the Chapman Slate Quarries; and from the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company, to visit their works at Summit Hill and Mauch Chunk and the Nesquehoning Tunnel. The Council reported the names of persons already elected in the two classes of members and associates. The following resolutions were passed : Resolved, That a committee of three be appointed, who shall take into consideration the printing and publishing of papers originating with the Institute, and that a uniform system as regards size and execution be adopted. The committee appointed consisted of Messrs. R. W. Raymond, E. B. Coxe, and the Secretary. Resolved, That the Council design and prepare a seal for the Institute at the earliest practicable time. Resolved, That a committee of six, with power to add to its numbers, be appointed to examine into the question of the more economical production of iron in this country. Laboratory and pilot plant investigations aimed at recovering gold as an electroformed sheet from gold eluate and gold leach solutions and slurries are discussed. The electrolytic test work undertaken makes use of high surface area electrodes, in particular nickel-chrome foam metal and activated carbon, as well as ultrasonic activation. The process involves initial gold electrowinning (or adsorption onto activated carbon), followed by gold electroforming, both operations being carried out in a specially designed reactor. The pilot plant work mainly involved the treatment of gold eluate solutions from a South African gold mine containing 600 mg/L Au: some tests were also carried out on gold leach solutions containing 6 mg/L Au. In the former case, very efficient gold extraction onto the foam metal cathode was achieved using electrolysis combined with ultrasonics. The polarity of the gold-loaded cathode was then reversed and, using a replacement electroforming electrolyte, gold was electroformed in situ onto a polished stainless steel mandrel, from which gold sheet was subsequently removed. In the case of leach solutions, pilot plant tests confirmed laboratory findings that in the presence of calcium (resulting from the lime used during the leaching process) no electrowinning is possible. Laboratory tests showed, however, that when sodium (in the form of NaOH or Na2CO3) is added to the leach solution, electrowinning can indeed take place. Alternatively, if a special activated carbon electrode is used (without current), the non-ionic calcium aurocyanide complex is adsorbed on to the activated carbon. When a gold-loaded activated carbon electrode is made anodic in a gold electroforming electrolyte, gold electroforming is feasible, although the efficiency is very low. The possible implications of these developments for gold recovery are further examined.

Research and development studies were carried out at the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology to produce a synthetic forsterite sand from asbestos tailings for Les Sables Olimag Inc. The National Research Council of Canada also supported and collaborated to the project. Theoretically, the technological approach consists of a heat at over 1300°C; however, the process without additive would result in the production of an enstatite-rich product (MgSiO3) having a fusion temperature less than 1600°C. The purpose was to foster the formation of forsterite (Mg2SiO4), a more refractory compound. The fabrication of the forsterite product requires pre-agglomeration of serpentine-MgO with a binder, which is stable at high temperature, to prevent the loss of the powdered magnesium oxide as dust in the kiln off gases and to maintain the mixture homogeneous during the process. Characterization of the end products with respect to mineral composition and thermal resistance are described. The synthetic forsterite in sand form was tested with success under a bath of liquid steel maintained at 1700°C for up to two hours. The advantages of the new sand and its potential applications will be reviewed.

Present study interest by aluminium alloy (Al 7175-T5173) drilled without cooling fluid. The influence of the machining parameters (spindle speed and feed rate) on the holes quality was analyzed. Drilling tools are made of carbide (WC); high speed steel (HSS) and TiN coated carbide (WC-Ti).The Experiment design was reinforced by the application of statistical analysis of variance (ANOVA).The results show that the thrust force is influenced principally by the spindle speed and feed rate. Though, both feed rate and tool materials have statistical significance on the surface roughness. In addition, the objective of correlations between spindle speed and feed rate with the evolution of the machining parameters was established. These correlations were obtained by quadratic regression using the response surface methodology. Finally, useful to select optimum values of drilling parameters, that would minimize thrust force, torque, cutting temperature and surface roughness.

THE production and inspection of the materials of war involves thousands of observations. Logical action is generally based on the interpretation of many observations. The success of such action depends upon the accuracy of the observations and the soundness of the interpretation placed upon them. There are countless instances where the observer 'sees but perceives not'; that is, the significance of a group of observations is lost, due either to faulty interpretation or to no interpretation at all being placed on the results. This condition is being partly corrected in the United Kingdom and the United States (1) by the promotion of certain principles by Ordnance officials. The term Quality Control has been adopted to describe a system of studying and controlling industrial products by methods of handling observations. In these pages an attempt is made to outline in a non-technical manner some of the ideas used in the handling of observations. Of course the authenticity of the observations determines the worth of any decisions based on them. No matter how brilliant is the theory built on unreliable sampling, it is usually of little practical value. n some fields it is almost impossible to obtain observations free from bias. Let us suppose that observers of speed in miles per hour were available for judgment: (a) a bystander, (b) a motorcycle policeman, and (c) a motorist accused of speeding. The bystander might be unbiased but probably would be very inaccurate. The motorist is usually biased on the low side. The policeman is the only qualified observer and, if over-zealous, he might be biased on the high side. Conclusions drawn from large numbers of biased observations naturally would be of little value.

Hatch Ltd. has recently completed a project to increase refractory gold ore processing capacity at Newmont Mining Corporation’s Twin Creeks facility. The objective of the project was to increase throughput by approximately 10% by adding a third autoclave feed pump to each of the two autoclave circuits. To minimize project capital cost, autoclave feed pumps from Newmont’s decommissioned Lone Tree facility were evaluated and found to be suitable for this new service. The existing pressure oxidation circuit was reviewed in a debottlenecking study to determine other upgrades required to facilitate the increased throughput. Interruption to operations was minimized with a detailed construction plan, supplemented with detailed 3D layout model sequencing studies. The focus of this paper is project development, multi-discipline design considerations, and implementation results.

The cadmium and cyanide are main poisonous components in cyanide electroplating cadmium waste water of an electroplating plant in Shenyang. The content of cadmium is about 26 mg/L and the content of cyanide is about 11.782 mg/L in this waste water. The main form of cadmium and cyanide are ions which are Cd2+and CN?. Because the cadmium and cyanide exceeded the standard seriously, the waste water must be disposed before it discharges. The microbiological method of treating heavy metals in wastewater has many advantages. For example, it has a fast adsorption velocity, high processing efficiency, wide range of pH and temperature, few invest, low running cost, no the second pollution and so on. At the same time, the CN? could be degradated by some microbiology. The physical nature, the chemical nature of Bacillus mucilaginosus, the adsorbing condition and adsorbing regular of Bacillus mucilaginosus to cadmium in the wastewater are studied by using Bacillus mucilaginosus as adsorbent removing cadmium from electroplating wastewater. The experimental results show that the adsorbing rate of cadmium is over 92%, under the room temperature(about 25?), stiring revolution in adsorption being 800 r/min for 30 min, pH being 5 , the bacteria being cultured after 5d with the biomass of Bacillus mucilaginosus 40g/L (wet weight). The mechanism in biosorption process of Bacillus mucilaginosus to cadmium is analyzed and discussed by TEM , Zeta potential,and infrared spectroscopy analysis. The results showed, the chemical involving is main adsorbing form, while electrostatic attraction, ions exchange, hydrogen bonding and Van Der Waals force are concerned cooperatively. ?NH2 ?, ?C=O?, ?C=O?NH?CH2, ?CH3, ?OH are main adsorbing groups. At the same time, the floatablity of removing cyanide by Bacillus mucilaginosus is explored.

This project was started 8 June 1971. As set forth in our Proposal of 28 April 1970, responding to the RFP of 30 March 1970, the plan was twofold: 1) choose fluids and develop techniques for measuring coat porosity, and 2) construct a porosimeter for making such measurements, By the time plans for the porosimeter had been drawn up, the picture had changed; and it was found more advisable to do further researches on porosity rather than build the equipment. This development arose from a meeting with Dr. Fred N. Kissell on 14, 15 October 1971, annotated in our letter of 19 October 1971, and was contracted for 6 December 1971. The technical effort of the project was completed 7 May 1972. From the beginning it was realized that the ratio of 'hole volume to the whole volume' might be too simplistic a definition for coat porosity and that its measurement might be confounded by complications which were not yet known, We were hopeful that an exploration of fluids and techniques would provide early feedback on both these points which could be used in subsequent developments. This turned out to be the case.

"Several plant studies have been conducted at the Zinifex Century Mine over the past 5 years. For each of the plant studies, surveys of the zinc primary circuit were conducted, characterisation measurements for each operating cell taken, and the floatability components of the ore mapped to develop a model of the circuit. The floatability components and machine parameters were then used to simulate changes in circuit configuration and operating conditions, enabling further potential improvements in circuit performance to be identified.This paper reviews the current flotation practice at the mine, as well as various circuit changes and developments implemented by site. The application of the methodology and the evolution of the standard procedure are also discussed.INTRODUCTIONBase metals were first discovered in the Lawn Hill region of Queensland’s North West in 1869 and the first mining lease in this area was pegged in 1887 over what is now known as the Silver King vein deposit. The area encompassing these veins, which includes the Century deposit, was proclaimed the Burketown Mining Field in 1899. Exploration titles were granted to CRA in 1987, precisely 100 years after the initial discovery at Silver King, hence the name ‘Century’.Century was commissioned by Pasminco in late 1999, with the mine becoming fully operational on 1 March 2000 and the official opening taking place in April. Pasminco had bought the Century and Dugald River deposits from CRA in 1997 for A$345 million, and invested some A$710 million in bringing Century into production. Today, Century is the world’s second-largest zinc mine in terms of its output, having reached full capacity in 2003.The Zinifex Century Limited (“ZCL”) lead-zinc-silver deposit is located approximately 250 kms north-north west of Mt Isa in north-western Queensland. The deposit is a large flat-lying ore body covering an area of some 1.2 by 1.4 km, the 45 m-thick stratabound sulphide orebody is hosted within an 850 m-thick sequence of Proterozoic siltstone, shales and sandstone, amenable to open-cut mining methods. The mine has ramped up to full production delivering five and a half million tonnes of ore per annum, yielding approximately 900,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate and 90,000 tonnes of lead concentrate. Mine life is expected to be about 8 years"

Over the past 50 years, there have been a number of geological, mineralogical and metallurgical studies carried out on the Clear Hills ironstone deposits in northern Alberta, Canada. Due to the low grade and complex mineralogy, previous metallurgical studies have achieved limited success. After rejecting some of the more ‘conventional’ techniques for iron ore beneficiation, the authors chose to investigate the grain enlargement/iron segregation process for the beneficiation of the Clear Hills ironstone. The segregation reactions for iron have not been explored in as much detail as they have for copper and nickel. Iron segregation roasting involves the addition of a carbonaceous reductant and a chloride transport agent to an iron oxide ore, and heating the mixture to an appropriate temperature. The benefit of this process is that it allows ores in which the value minerals are intimately associated with gangue minerals to be processed in circumstances where conventional iron ore processing techniques are not suitable or capable of upgrading the material. As iron is one of the few elements that can be transported through this process, a clean high purity metallic concentrate can be achieved.Through the use of crucible testing followed by Davis tube magnetic separation, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and atomic absorption spectroscopy analysis, characterization of the reaction products has been made with an improved understanding of the reaction mechanism.

Too often in mine planning, maximising revenue-generating material takes precedence over minimising costs. The ability to target both revenue and cost optimisation enables mine plans to fulfil corporate objectives of targeting maximal project net present value (NPV). The state of current mining costs and increasing government regulations in Australia are forcing many mine planners to pay closer attention to cost minimisation. Dumping waste material, which ultimately forms waste landforms, represents a large cost to mining operations. A general mine, with a waste to ore strip ration of 6:1, allocates approximately 32 per cent of total mining costs to waste haulage alone (Gregory, 2003).Most scheduling packages do not dynamically build economic or minimal cost dumps as part of the scheduling process. In most cases, waste dumps are built after a mining schedule has been defined. Automated software is now available which dynamically schedules the pit and waste dumps together. The overall shape of the waste dump is therefore dictated by minimum cost or minimum haulage hours.The purpose of this paper is to compare dynamic pit and waste schedules to traditional methods which apply haulage estimations after defining the mining schedule. This paper includes a case study on the large open pit operation at Tropicana Gold Mine, a joint venture between AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd (70 per cent) and Independence Group NL (30 per cent). The operation will focus on mining three large open pits over a 13-year mining life. A total of 397 Mt of waste is mined and directed to multiple destinations including waste dumps, the run-of-mine (ROM) pad and tailings storage facility (TSF) perimeter.Due to these complexities, management of the haulage fleet, especially during the critical period of operation readiness and start-up, is essential. Critical infrastructure such as the TSF and ROM pad will need to be built early and these areas, as well as the sequential development of the waste dump, will need to be developed within the constraints of structured mining fleet build-up.This paper investigates the influences of haulage estimation accuracy and compares traditional approaches for waste planning to automated approaches using EVORELUTIONÖ.CITATION:Graskoski, S, Craig, S and Myburgh, C, 2013. Open pit mining has considerable damaging effects on the environment of the mining region. These harmful influences have to be controlled during mining operation until mine closure. Different sections of mined land, such as; pit(s), waste dump(s), tailing pond(s), roads, areas for onsite facilities and free land zones which are not mined, have to be reclaimed through treatment of environmental pollution and implementation of a permanent post mining land use (PMLU) after mine closure. Implementation of a permanent optimal post mining land use (OPMLU) is one the most decisive criterion which effects on reclamation procedure, mine closure and their costs. Therefore to define ultimate pit limit (UPL), mine closure and reclamation costs should be entered in the calculation iterations same as the other variable costs of the projects. Estimation of closure and reclamation costs of a mining project is carried out based on the attained OPMLU and the specifications of the mine site. In this paper, a model is developed to provide OPMLU for pit area through fuzzy multi-attribute decision making (FMADM) technique. The model was implemented on a hypothetical copper mine in northwest of Iran as a case study. Lumber production was selected as OPMLU for the pit area. It is finally concluded that through the developed model, OPMLU for different sections of mined land in an open pit mine project is defined. Also closure and reclamation costs are estimated based on the defined OPMLU to achieve a more accurate UPL.

Construction of the Shot Tower Metro Station in Baltimore, Maryland was performed in two phases. In the first phase, a contractor was retained to excavate the station in order to construct twin tunnels from the Shot Tower Station to the John Hopkins Station. The retention system for this 70' deep excavation consisted of a Soldier Pile in Tremie Concrete (SPTC) wall supported by cross-lot bracing. In phase two, The Clark Construction Group, Inc. was retained to construct the station interior structure, two entrances, two station ancillary shaft structures and the track work for the station and tunnel. The excavation for the construction of the two entrances adjacent to the 70' deep station SPTC wall had to proceed prior to completion of the station structure due to the tight construction schedule. A system of overlapping secant piles was specified as a vertical support of excavation element for the West Entrance. The secant piles would have provided a watertight, rigid support to resist the load from the SPTC wall constructed in phase one. A watertight system was required in order to minimize the settlement of adjacent buildings supported on wood piles. Clark Construction was concerned with the constructability, cost and performance of the specified secant piles and looked for other innovative methods of providing a watertight and rigid system. Substitution of a reinforced slurry wall in lieu of the secant piles was cost prohibitive due to the additional cost of concrete placed under tremie. Clark, being familiar with cement-bentonite cut-off walls and slurry wall construction procedures, proposed the construction of a PSHG wall, in lieu of the secant piles. The PSHG wall construction consisted of trenching 30" wide by 20' long by 60' deep panels under a self-hardening slurry. Once the excavation for a panel was completed, a 60' deep prefabricated soldier beam and lagging panel was placed in the slurry. The slurry design mix then self-hardened within the cure time, allowing excavation for the structure to proceed This paper will discuss the design, details and construction methods used on the PSHG wall and will compare the advantages of the PSHG system to conventional support systems.

Well planned and executed environmental management plans can reduce life-of-mine operating costs and the need to deal with major environmental issues at the time of mine closure. With proper planning during the exploration, feasibility and execution phases of a project, final closure costs can be reduced. The reduction of closure costs should be considered during exploration and initial feasibility studies and when process facilities, waste rock dumps and tailings impoundments are designed. During the mining of the resource, closure cost reduction will depend on effective and efficient environmental management plans for ongoing land clearance, segregation of mine waste materials, management of mine site water and workshop wastewaters, and the establishment of progressive rehabilitation strategies. These issues are the responsibility of planning, production, technical support and maintenance personnel at an operating site. The successful implementation of environmental plans will ensure that all impacts are reduced and that closure issues with major cost implications are addressed prior to closure of the mine.
