AS THE LOCAL electric generating plants increased in size and capacity and costs of producing electricity came down, it became apparent that it was no longer good economy to operate individual boiler plants at the Company's various collieries to power steam hoists and compressors. Great economies could be made by burning the Coal at central power plants and using electric power at the collieries. During the period after the end of the war, a steady and continuing programme of replacing first the smaller steam-driven units, and later the steam-driven compressors, was undertaken, and finally the larger hoists, those at No. 12 Colliery in New Waterford and No. 20 Colliery in Glace Bay, were the last units operated by steam.

A naphtha obtained by destructive, recycle hydrogenation of crude shale oil, produced by gas-combustion retorting of Colorado oil shale, was found by the Bureau of Mines to contain 49.1 percent paraffins, 20.3 percent cycloparaffins, 7.8 percent olefins, and 22.8 percent aromatics. The naphtha contained only minor amounts of sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen compounds. Compounds containing less than 5 carbon-atoms per molecule were removed by distillation before analysis. The paraffins where predominantly straight-chain compounds; n-Hexane was present in the largest quantity, and the other straight-chain paraffins decreased in amount as the molecular weight increased. The cycloparaffins, which contained both cyclopentanes and cyclohexanes, were evenly distributed throughout the boiling range. Although the naphtha had been produced by hydrogenation, it contained a small quantity of olefins. Straight-chain olefins with a terminal double bond comprised about two-thirds of these compounds. Among olefins with an internal double bond, those having trans configuration were present in three times the quantity of those in the cis form. In the aromatics all but one of the alkylbenzenes having nine or less carbon-atoms per molecule were identified; toluene was present in the greatest quantity. Only a few of the higher molecular-weight homologs were identified. The composition of the naphtha was computed from analyses of 105 narrow¬boiling distillation fractions. Volume, density, refractive indices, bromine number, and an ultraviolet spectrum were determined on each fraction. From these data the hydrocarbon-group composition of each fraction was estimated. A silica gel adsorption analysis was used to check the values of nearly one-third of the fraction calculated from physical-property data. Mass and infrared spectra were obtained on some fractions for identifying individual compounds or types of compounds, such as terminal olefins.

These extracts are sufficient for the purpose of emphasizing the practical difficulties of averaging iron-mining conditions so as to make general vital statistics concerning iron miners useful Tor scientific. purposes. It is self-evident that conclusions based upon iron miners, so called, working largely above ground and employed chiefly in open-cut blasting ~perations or the management of steam shovels, etc., can not be made to apply to miners working continuously underground with an exposure of dust and other conditions quite similar to underground mining methods in the extraction of gold, silver, copper, lead, and other ores. The so-called "milling" process as practiced on the Mesabi Range may here be referred to, the same being explained in the report of the Immigration Commission to consist "in the sinking of a shaft on the edge of the ore body from which a tunnel is run in under the ore and connected with a vertical, funnel-shaped hole from under the surface, through which the ore is 'milled' down into the tramcars placed under the opening under the tunnel. After being loaded at the bottom of the funnelshaped hole, the cars are run out to the bottom 0.£ the shaft. where the ore is dumped into skids or elevators and raised to the ~urface and unloaded into the tipple, where it is loaded into thecal'S ready for shipment." It is properly pointed out that the so-called " milling" process employs some of the features of both the open-pit and underground methods of mining. For these and many other reasons it is self-evident that general statistics concerning iron mining are quite likely to be inconclusive and possibly seriously misleading. Aside from the foregoing the problem is seriously complicated by the extensive employment of foreign labor in the iron-mining ind ustries of the Lake Superior districts and of Negro labor in iron mining in Alabama. Within recent years, according to the report of the Immigration Commission, a considerable displacement has occurred in t~e quality of labor employed in iron mining, the displacement bemg referred to as "progressive," in that one race or group of races has entered the region and taken up the work offered in the lower occupations, the race or races already holdinz such positions having. moved up in the scale of occupation leaving the field to the newcomers. This statement is quite suggestive in that it indicates a comparatively short average trade life or trade exposure, quite at variance with the relatively long average ascer- MINES, QUARRIES, ORE REDUCTION, AND SMELTING. 377 tained for the iron mines of New <Tersey. It is said in the report of the Immigration Commission that- The Scandinavians and the other northern European races have given way to the Finns and Slovenians, and in the open-pit mines the Finns and Slovenians have given way to the south Italian, Montenegrins, Croatins, and other southern European races. In the underground mines the common labor and mining is chiefly done bv Finns and Slovenians because the races from the southern countries can not stand the heavy physical work required in this kind of mining. Here, too, is found the same upward movement, for formerly the English (Cornishmen) and Scandinavians' were in the lower occupations in the underground properties, At present the south Italians, Serbians, Montenegrins, and Croatians are performing the most menial work and are the races who are now at the foot of the scale of occupations. It is a matter of conjecture on the ranges as to who will push these races up or whether they will remain the commou laborers of the region. Inquiry was made into the prevalence of diseases OIl the ranges, but more with reference to outside sanitary conditions than to occupational exposure. The most common diseases on the ranges, however, were ascertained to be pulmonary tuberculosis and typhoid fever, and to a lesser extent smallpox and venereal diseases. With -cgard to pulmonary tuberculosis it is said that the disease is most Eevalent among the Finns and the Swedes, and is chiefly imported, I'here is no reference to a possible connection between disease occur- ~ence and occupational conditions, above or below ground, but there .s no evidence that this aspect of the iron-mining industry was made .he subject of a special investigation.

When a fan or blower breaks down or becomes worn, customers have two choices. They can replace it or they can have it repaired. In the past, replacement was the preferred option, especially when the equipment was severely damaged or worn. Now, however, customers are discovering the benefits of repairing or rebuilding. Even when the cost of repair is more than 60 percent of the cost of a new fan, customers are choosing the repair option. The cost savings can range from 20 percent to 80 percent. In many cases, the quality of the repaired part or component will exceed the quality of the original. This is because repair engineers have an advantage over the original designers. They can see how the existing fan performed — or failed to perform — in a specific application.

A flowsheet is being developed for processing Thompson ultramafic low-grade nickel ores. This type of ore is characterized by high content of serpentinized magnesium silicates which generate slimes during comminution. Flotation of this type of ore proves difficult due to problems associated with the slimes. The flowsheet, based on extensive laboratory and miniplant flotation tests, consists of two key components: desliming by hydrocyclones prior to flotation and using soda ash for pH control in flotation. Satisfactory metallurgical results have consistently been achieved in laboratory full circuit simulation and miniplant tests.

On the night of June 8, 1917, the flame of a carbide lamp accidentally set fire to the uncovered and frayed insulation of an armored power cable near the 2,400-foot level of the North Butte Mining CO.'s Granite Mountain shaft. How this, insulation accidentally became exposed is explained on page 15. The highly flammable oiled fabric set fire to the shaft timbers, and as this is a downcast shaft the fire spread with great rapidity, soon filling the mine workings with smoke and gas. At the time 410 men were working underground, 247 of whom escaped by various means, but most of the 163 remaining were probably overcome soon after the fire started, and perished. Only two men were actually burned. The cause of the disaster was purely accidental. The immediate effect was the unexpected reversal of normal conditions; the ultimate effect was great loss of life and the destruction of the main hoisting shaft, putting it temporarily out of service. The work of rescue and fire fighting continued eight days. The following pages present an attempt to draw some practical conclusions and suggestions from this disaster. The property of the North Butte Mining Co. consists of about 220 acres in the northeastern part of the Butte district, Montana. Next to the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. it is the largest producer of the district. In 1916, the year before the disaster, there were 1,160 men employed. The output was 560,947 tons of ore, which yielded 24,498,181 pounds of copper, 1,047,063 ounces of silver, 1,712 ounces of gold, and 412,953 pounds of zinc. The profit was $2,479,595. The total development work for that year was 21,694 feet. During the first half of 1917, the year of the accident, the daily tonnage of ore averaged 2,000, an increase of 400 tons over that of the year 1916.

A thorough assessment of development drilling and blasting practice was carried out at two underground mines at INCO operations in Thompson, Manitoba. The study showed that significant improvement in productivity can be achieved through careful selection of explosives and loading practice, and modifications of the standard blast lay-out. The analysis involved assessment of the effectiveness of various perimeter blasting methods, employing selected explosives and loading practice in both jumbo and jack-leg rounds. The blasting pattern as well as burden and spacing were varied to determine their effect on the blast results. The various types of explosives used were, pneumatically loaded ANFO, with and without detonating cord tracing, extra-strength detonating cord, and slurry and emulsion explosives with and without cord tracing. The study also dealt with various means to achieve increased rate of advance in both jumbo and jack-leg rounds. The diagnostic measurements consisted of VOD, 'burn' marks or half-barrels on perimeter wall, and blasting vibrations. The effects of geology, firing sequence, blast lay-out, and drill hole deviation on the final results were also examined. The results of the study have been shown to have very important bearing on the design of development round blasting.

THERE are certain facts that the mining industry in Australia is faced with at the present moment which may be accepted as axioms. The industry is at a low ebb, as evidenced by statistics. Metals form the basis of all modern industries, and are necessaryfor the welfare of Australia. Mining is a wasting asset. Every ton of ore extracted is one ton less which c.annot be made good, and it should be our duty to get as much profit froin that ore as possible, otherwise there is a permanent loss to the country.The metal market cannot be controlled by Australia; it is more or less an international matter. Australia has not been thoroughly prospected. There are no mines being developed that are likely to replace those which are being depleted.Our mining engineers are as capable as those in other parts of the world, and have made good where they have been given a chance. There is no one cause for the present depression; there are several, more or less, interwoven. Of course, the war has had an adverse effect, but that has only dislocated things temporarily; it upset our markets, influenced the price of metals, and affected the labour market and cost of stores. Labour troubles made their appearance before the wave of unrest swept over the world. The cause of labour discontent must be investigated, and if possible removed. As each industry has .its&#183;own problems, miners must inquire into their special problems, as there is no sovereign remedy that will suit all cases.It is obvious that we cannot mine ore if we do not know where it is; therefore, the first thing is to discover workable deposits.

Respecto al diseño de perforadoras se debe considerar tres criterios: fáciles de transportar y manejar, poder y velocidad en la perforación para la producción requerida y el fácil acceso a sus componentes para darle mantenimiento. En el caso de las palas se considera: el uso de aleaciones en componentes críticos para mantener una relación de potencia estable, el uso de común de ciertos elementos para reducir el inventario de partes de repuesto, la instalación de sistemas automáticos de lubricación en áreas críticas, el uso de sistemas hidráulicos para facilitar la operación y mantenimiento y el uso de componentes eléctricos modulares para reducir el tiempo muerto debido a reparaciones. Finalmente, en el análisis del uso de energía o hidráulica (draga, camión) debe incluir los siguientes criterios: se debe permitir al operador el control absoluto sobre la máquina, asegurar la calidad y confiabilidad de los componentes y determinar el sistema de los más bajos costos de operación y mantenimiento.

At Renlou Coal Mine, Huaibei Mine Area, the track entry deformed significantly after longwall mining in an overlying multiple seams. The supporting characteristics of primary roof bolts and shotcrete with wire mesh are closely related to the movement of the mine?s surrounding strata. A case study of a track entry deformation was monitored during the longwall mining of a selected overlying panel. The measured data showed the unique entry deformation pattern during the longwall mining in the overlying seam. Underground extensometer measurement showed that entry stability was mainly affected by the periodic roof weighting of longwall mining in the overlying seam. The displacement of the deeper strata occurred a head of the immediate vicinity of the entry. Thereafter, deformation of the roof and floor strata was in the form of shearing of the shallower strata. Due to the use of heavy-duty roof bolting with wire-mesh, the roof-tofloor and rib-to-rib convergences were small, but the floor heave was large, greater than 80% of the roof-to-floor convergence. The measured displacement from extensometers varied with the position of the monitored cross-sections and depth into the roof. There were several deformation patterns, such as shearing movement, compression, and expansion, and the variations between compression and expansion. Strata compression at the entry surface was always accompanied with shearing movement at the deeper strata. During the longwall mining, the whole surrounding strata of the entry moved toward the opening. Underground practical experience indicated that prior to mining, the entry was supported very well in excellent conditions. After mining, however, it deformed greatly. The current entry support technology was not effectively control the severe deformation incurred in entries driven in soft strata due to the following reasons: (1) little is known about the entry deformation behavior of the strata surrounding the opening and (2) the degree of interactions between entry deformation and roof bolting with wire mesh is not well understood. Consequently, effective supporting systems cannot be properly selected to control its deformation and maintain a stable supported surrounding structure.

Modern electrolysis technologies can provide possibilities for developing sustainable processes in terms of energy and environment. Laboratory experiments were carried out to study electrodeposition of iron from molten salts and aqueous solutions using an inert oxygen evolving anode to eliminate the emissions of CO2. The possibilities of molten salt electrorefining of metallurgical grade silicon to produce solar grade silicon were also investigated. Electrochemical techniques were used to study the electrochemical behaviour of dissolved iron, silicon, and titanium species. Bulk electrolysis was carried out to deposit pure iron, silicon, and titanium. The quality of the deposits was studied by SEM/EDS and XRD analyses. IN the testing of materials there exist various methods of recording graphically the behavior of a material subjected to tensile stress. Prob-ably the most common method is to plot the tensile stress So, obtained by dividing the load P by the original area of cross section AO at the start of the test, as a function of the strain ?o, which is obtained by dividing the ?Lo or the change in the gauge length by the original gauge length Lo. A list of the symbols used here is given in Table 1. This method, while it has proved useful in the routine testing and comparison of various materials, does not have a very sound physical basis, as was first pointed out by P. Ludwik1, and consequently does not afford a very deep insight into the true physical behavior of the material under stress. Among the objections to this method may be mentioned: (1) that by dividing the load P at any stage of the test by the original area Ao a fictitious stress is obtained, which does not actually exist; (2) that the strain ?o = ?Lo /Lo is not an exact expression for the true strain for large values of ?Lo in per cent of Lo; (3) that when necking starts the strain varies considerably along the gauge length and the above expression no longer gives the true strain existing at any point on the outside of the bar; and (4) that the axial strain varies over the cross section of the necked portion and ?o does not represent an average of these strains over the cross section. Stresses taken from such a diagram would be only approximate and, if used to compare results of a test on a given material under simple tension with results obtained under combined stresses, certain errors would he thus introduced. In order to overcome some of these objections, various methods have been suggested, both as to the quantities to be measured and as to their graphical representation. The recovery of gold by ore leaching is influenced by the size of the particles and the chemical environment. Within the experimental error associated to the testing of gold ore, results of a series of leaching tests conducted with natural ores rather than monosized samples confirm that gold dissolution increases with decreasing ore particle size. The tests also indicate that the dissolution of gold in the ore within a size interval is weakly affected by the intensity of the size reduction method.

When addressing Germany’s resource supplies, we need to distinguish between those domestically available and imported ones. Resource extraction ostensibly competes with the designation of protection areas. However, the parallel existence of wildlife and plant life, and operations in the areas used for resource extractions is continually underestimated. The European Commission has compiled guidance documents facilitating the extraction of resources from protected areas. With regard to resource productivity, the market appears to be the appropriate instrument for minimising resource consumption. Policy makers are now called upon to create a legal framework leading to a consensus accepted by society.

INTRODUCTION A number of tunnels supported and permanently lined by steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) have been built in North America in the 1980s. The material is more economical than, and technically equal or superior to, conventional shotcrete using wire mesh. The design and construction of SFRS-lined tunnels is straightforward, and only a few new design principles, laboratory tests or construction equipment modifications appear necessary in order to use this material. Modern tunnel Contractors may use cyclic drill-and-blast methods on some tunnels, with intermittent shotcreting as part of an orderly cycle. The Dry Mix method is most suitable for cyclic, intermittent, relatively small-scale shotcreting. However, modern Contractors excavating tunnels continuously using large long Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) or Roadheaders may prefer Wet Mix shotcreting on a mass production basis. In either case, the use of steel-fiber-rein¬forced shotcrete (SFRS) promotes the rapid and economical excavation of tunnels. The addition of microsilica will improve SFRS properties and reduce rebound, and is expected to become standard practice with SFRS in North America, as it now is in Scandinavia. HISTORICAL REVIEW Steel-fiber-reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) at the present time (1985) is essentially conventional shotcrete with straight or deformed steel fibers added, and in general SFRS for tunnel linings encounters the same problems that conventional shotcrete does. Keywords: SEED, SSM materials, Microstructural evolution, Rheology, Swirling Speed SEED (Swirled Enthalpy Equilibration Device) is established itself as a new technology amongst the many Semi-Solid Metal (SSM) processes, where swirling of the mush plays an important role in modifying the dendritic structure of as-cast parts. A range of semi solid metal structures, dendritic, rosette and/or globular morphology of primary phase, can be prepared using SEED. The current article reports on the application of rheological tests in characterizing microstructural evolution during SSM processing of 356 Al-Si foundry alloy. A simple parallel plate test machine, designed and constructed at our labs, was used to determine viscosity values for each structure and identify the optimum structure with superior die filling characteristics. Such findings have important technological and economical implications during high pressure die casting of semi- solid metals. The strain-time graphs for 356 Al-Si foundry alloy indicated lower viscosity values for globular microstructure, i.e. improved die filling.

Formation of either sodium jarosite or lead jarosite from concentrated chloride solutions containing small concentrations of sulphate has been demonstrated. Sodium jarosite is precipitated at 95-100&#176;C from FeC13-FeCI2-NaCI-PbCI2 solutions to which was added Na2SO4 or Li2SO4 in amounts greater than 0.05 M. In the absence of alkali metal ions capable of forming jarosites, lead jarosite was precipitated from either FeCI3-PbCI2 or FeCI3-FeCI2-LiCI-PbCI2 solutions to which had been added small amounts of sulphate. Many of the factors affecting jarosite precipitation from chloride solution have been elucidated, and the most critical were sulphate concentration and initial pH. Concentrations of HCI in excess of O. I M essentially suppressed the production of jarosite in chloride media. Alkali jarosite, precipitated in the presence of dissolved lead, incorporates a small amount of this metal into the alkali jarosite lattice. Small but significant amounts of copper can also be incorporated into alkali jarosite and the amount is further increased in the presence of lead. Other divalent base metals such as Zn, Cd or Ni are not significantly precipitated. Sulphate control in either FeCI3 or FeCl3-NaCI leaching systems could likely be maintained by jarosite precipitation provided that the acid concentration of the solution was low.

The effect of discontinuities on the fracturing and mechanical behavior of shale has been extensively investigated on a laboratory scale in previous works. It is well agreed that the lamination properties, including discontinuity and lamina properties, affect the behavior of shale. However, it is still unclear how the lamination properties are affecting the stability of the shale roof in an underground coal mine entry. This paper investigated the effect of lamination properties using the discrete element method on a mine-scale entry model as an extension to the previous work conducted on laboratory scale models.
