Introduction Situated in the district of South Lorrain, some 16 miles southeast of Cobalt, Ontario, and reached from that centre either by branch line of the T. & N. O. railway or by what, for a mining camp, is a reasonably good road, the Keeley mine, owned by the Keeley Silver Mines,' Ltd., has had its history recorded by C. W. Knight (1). Silver was first discovered in South Lorrain, in Woods' vein, on Keeley property, in 1907, and the Keeley mine has been described by Knight (2) and Bell (3). The total production to February 28th, 1930, has been 10,760,107 ounces of silver and 1,285. 434 pounds (weight) of cobalt.

The new underground facilities for the LINAC Coherent Light Source project at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in Menlo Park, CA, are constructed in very weak sedimentary rock interspersed with uncemented zones. In addition to several 21-footwide (excavated) tunnels, the NATM excavations include a large, 49-foot wide (excavated) cavern, an unprecedented size in this geology. The critical design issues include characterization of the weak rock, some shallow rock cover areas, and very stringent criteria for final invert slab movements within the tunnel. The design also incorporated severe seismic criteria, since the site is in close proximity to the San Andreas Fault.

"The present research work deals with directional solidification (DS) of both Al-15wt.%Si and Al-15wt.%Si-1.5wt.%Mg alloys and further characterization of the related microstructures. The growth of refined primary Si and refined eutectic is well-known as positive in order to improve mechanical properties of the Al-Si based alloys. Alloying is also an effective method to strengthen the Al-Si based alloys, in which Mg is considered an important alloying element. However, lack of investigation regarding the effects of Mg on microstructure of these alloys is noted. So, in the present research work emphasis is given on both dendritic and eutectic growth being affected by solidification kinetics (V-growth rate and G-thermal gradient) during transient directional solidification. Experimental evolutions of microstructural spacing of both alloys have been determined which becomes possible to understand the effects of Mg coupled with the effects of growth rate on the final microstructural arrangements. A direct comparison of the tensile mechanical properties obtained for the alloys is also performed. It is shown by these correlations that the addition of Mg generally improves the tensile mechanical resistance with a minor decrease in ductility. Furthermore, the Scheil solidification path of the ternary Al-Si-Mg alloy was determined using the computational thermodynamics software Thermo-Calc, resulting in the following sequence of precipitation: Liquid-Si-a (Al)+Si- a(Al)+Si+Mg2Si. This sequence is compared with the experimental microstructure findings.INTRODUCTION Al-Si alloys containing from 4wt.% to 22wt.% Si comprise more than 90% of all Al-based castings. Parts manufactured with these alloys have a wide range of industrial applications due to their excellent castability, crack resistance, good corrosion resistance, good weldability, low density and high strength (Bray, 1976; Zolotorevsky, 2007; Reyes, 2017). Hypereutectic Al-Si alloys are widely used and researched in the automotive and aerospace sectors due to the low coefficient of thermal expansion, resistance at high temperatures, good wear resistance and high strength (Reyes, 2017; Tebib, 2013). Above the equilibrium eutectic composition (~12.5wt.%Si) the amount of primary Si particles becomes significant (Lasa, 2003). In the place of conventional hypoeutectic Al–Si, there is growing interest in hypereutectic Al–Si alloys as a candidate material for the high-quality engines because a higher volume fraction of silicon may bring about superior properties (Matsuura, 2003)"

"INTRODUCTION The use of beryllium and its alloys has increased rapidly during the last decade. Further expansion of its use is limited; in part, by lack of adequately developed ore reserves. The principal commercial beryllium mineral is beryl, which is found chiefly in pegmatites and produced for market as a byproduct of the mica and feldspar industries. The coarse beryl is mined selectively, sobbed and sorted by hand, and then sold without further beneficiation. The known reserves of coarse beryl are small. No method has been available for concentrating small disseminated beryl crystals, so ores of this type have not been mined or have been left on waste dumps. Disseminated ore in low-grade unmined areas and waste dumps on developed properties is a potential source of beryl, provided a method is developed for its beneficiation.Published literature on the concentration of beryl is lacking in detail or deals chiefly with tests on artificial mixtures of pure minerals, and procedures as given were not applicable to the beryl ores tested at the Salt Lake Station. The testing procedures described in this report are independent developments. By employing these procedures, beryl was satisfactorily con¬centrated from several run-of-mine and dump ores, although these ores wore low in grade and part of the contained beryl was finely crystalline and disseminated.Beryl, quartz, and feldspar, when ground to flotation sizes, are so alike in color and general appearance that they cannot he distinguished by visual observation. The progress of the work depended on rapid determination of the grade of test products by means of the petrographic microscope. Small samples of concentrates and tailings were often cut after each addition of reagents, dried, and examined under the microscope."

The limitation of fossil fuel resources and the necessity of reducing CO2emission require an increase of the efficiency of power plants by using combined cycle power systems. Pressurized Pulverized Coal Combustion (PPCC) is a potential concept to realise these objectives. The direct use of hot flue gas for driving a gas turbine requires a hot gas cleanup to achieve corrosion prevention of the turbine blading. One of the main problems is the alkali release during the coal combustion process. Molten coal ash slag has a high potential for alkali retention which depend son the alkali oxide activity in the slag. Knudsen Effusion Mass Spectrometry (KEMS) was used to determine thermodynamic data of alkali gas species over molten coal ash slags and of alkali oxides in molten coal ash slags. The main interest of the investigations focused on the structural dependence of the thermodynamic properties of the alkalis. It was found that there is a strong correlation between the thermodynamic properties and the ratio of nonbridging oxygen to tetrahedral oxygen (NBO/T). An increase of the polymerization of the slag results in a decrease of the alkali oxide activity in the slag and thus a decrease of the alkali partial pressure over the slag. Ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3), a white crystalline chemical compound composed of 35 percent nitrogen, 60 percent oxygen, and 5 percent hydrogen, has again attracted attention, due largely to the recent catastrophe on April 16 and 17, 1947, at Texas City, Tex. The fire and subsequent explosion on the steamship Ocean Liberty, outside the harbor of Brest, France, on July 28, 1947, has fur- ther increased the interest in the properties of ammonium nitrate. As a result of the Texas City disaster, several laboratories have undertaken research to determine more certainly what causes ammonium nitrate to detonate and under what circumstances. This is not the first time that ammonium nitrate has been involved in a disaster, and its properties reviewed from the standpoint of safety. The disaster at Oppau, Germany, in 1921, which involved an equimolec- ular mixture of ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate, prompted an intensive study in Europe and in America. In the United States the properties of am- monium nitrate are now of especial concern because very large quantites are being manufactured and shipped in interstate commerce and abroad. Many an- monium nitrate factories, which were built during the war, will manufacture increasing amounts of this compound for use as a fertilizer. It is the purpose of this report to present a brief summary and biblio- graphy of the published experimental facts about the properties and behavior of ammonium nitrate. The reader is referred to original publications for greater details of the investigative work, and for theoretical discussions. This report also includes a survey of ammonium nitrate fertilizer of the type involved in the Texas City explosions. In the past, authorities have not always agreed on the degree of hazard involved in the manufacture and handling of ammonium nitrate, as the following quotations from the literature indicate: Munroe (82) quoted the following from Turner's Chemistry (a book pub- lished in 1835): "When this salt is exposed to fire, it liquefies, emits aqueous vapor, dries and detonates." Berthelot (14) in his book, Explosives and Their Power, 1983, wrote: "Ammonium nitrate from the point of view of its volatility, and cn account of many considerations, may be regarded as a typical explosive substance."

The latter half of the 20th century has seen the proliferation of a series of codes to address commodity needs which were brought about by rapidly advancing technologies and the globalization of markets and consumerism. This paper addresses the specific needs and the origin of this surge and presents these codes in the context they were developed. It also compares the main codes or groups of codes and elaborates upon their strengths and weaknesses. Three main categories of codes are identified, namely: codes for reporting to international agencies, codes addressing government needs and, finally, codes for the investors and the stock market. Codes governed by international agencies usually relate to strategic commodities which have highly specialized fields of usage like nuclear power generation where international cooperation is eventually the only viable approach for both the development of technologies and their applications. Codes for reporting to governments address the necessity of each state to exploit their mineral potential profitably and to secure the preservation of wealth for future generations. Reporting to investors is experiencing a considerable popularity as of late because of globalization in mining and the growing need for outside financing of mining projects, whose capital requirements are getting out of reach for the average mid-cap mining company. All these codes have advantages and shortcomings dictated by the specific circumstances under which they were developed, therefore necessitating the definition and implementation of some kind of international standard whereby investments and the spread of information across political boundaries would be facilitated. Though none of these codes might ever become international in the true sense of the word because of significantly different legislations at national level, a step that would greatly contribute to the cross-border disclosure of information would be the reciprocal recognition of competent persons by the major mining countries, including China and Russia. It is also becoming essential that financial institutions and investors be properly advised on mining projects by reporting reserves and resources in a transparent and responsible way with the relevant public disclosures being compiled by professionals who take full responsibility for their submissions. Spiral concentrators are gravity based separation devices used for the preparation of coal, iron and heavy mineral ores (Wills, 1992). Gravity concentration remains the main separation method for fine iron ore and is used extensively for treating many minerals. Gravity concentration methods separate minerals of different specific gravity by their relative movement in response to gravity and one or more other forces, the latter often being the resistance to motion offered by a viscous fluid such as water or air (Wills, 2006).The main operating variables for a spiral concentrator are the feed rate, the slurry concentration, the wash water addition and the position of the splitters used to separate the tailings, middlings and concentrate streams (Sadeghi, Bazin and Renaud, 2014). Wash water is an important control variable used to wash away entrapped light minerals from the concentrate stream (Burt, 1984; Bouchard, 2001). Sadeghi et al concluded the spiral operation to be sensitive to the wash water flow addition and resultant economic trade-off. Increasing the wash water flow rate increases the concentrate grade at the expense of the iron recovery.The paper addresses the effects of dripping wash water onto the concentrate stream of a spiral processing fine iron ore. The dripping wash water system offers a low flow alternative and could possibly provide a good balance between grade and recovery of valuable minerals without using excessive water. The Multotec SC20HC/7 WW spiral was used for the experimental test work. The spiral was tested at varying solids concentrations; the wash water rate and the splitter positions were kept constant.The use of wash water at 30 per cent, 35 per cent and 40 per cent solid concentration improved the Fe grade in the concentrate by about 1.5 per cent, six per cent and eight per cent respectively. The additional SiO2 rejected by the wash water is approximately three per cent, nine per cent, and 11 per cent at 30 per cent, 35 per cent and 40 per cent solid concentration respectively. Addition of wash water is shown to have minimum effect on grade at 30 per cent solid concentration, and Fe upgrades obtained with and without wash water were found to be similar. Notable upgrades were observed at 35 and 40 per cent solid concentration with wash water. The results obtained suggest that the additional SiO2 rejection by wash water increases with an increase in solid concentration. This suggests that the benefit of using the drip system is notable at higher solid concentration. It is believed that at lower solid concentration SiO2 particles are reasonably free to move around and are possibly less entrapped than at high solid concentration.The Fe grade/recovery and solid concentration relationship with wash water showed a non-linear correlation. The Fe grade increases with an increase in solid concentration up to a somewhat optimum point and then drops as solid concentration increases further. The recovery of Fe on the other hand follows a converse relationship with solid concentration, the recovery decreases from 30 per cent to 35 per cent solid concentration and then increases again at 40 per cent solid concentration. The increase in recovery at higher solid concentration could possibly be explained by the fact that the mass yield to concentrate also increases with solid concentration. Since recovery is a function of both grade and mass yield, the higher recovery at 40 per cent solid concentration is likely due to the high mass yield obtainable at 40 per cent solid concentration.The drip system could therefore possibly offer a safe guarding against grade and solid concentration variations without using excessive water, and possibly ensure that a product within specification is maintained.CITATION:Ramotsabi, C M, Erasmus, W and Bornman, F, 2015. The purpose of the work covered by this contract is to develop a means of designing splice connectors which will significantly improve mine trailing cable splice performance. A brief discussion on splice problems is presented as an introductory means and substantiates the need for the development and test programs outlined in this report. Because of the empirical nature of this effort, time has been devoted to explaining the derivations of the test procedures used. Special attention is given to the splice flexing machine which served as the backbone of the test program. In order to familiarize persons with connector terminology, a section is devoted to a glossary of pertinent terms. Various types of cable joints are also defined. The major effort is a connector design parameter study. Utilizing the optimum parameters developed along with the suggested design procedure outlined in Appendix I should result in significantly improved splice performance and thus meet the objectives of this contract. A field test program was instituted for the purpose of insuring adaptability of connector design and associated installation tooling along with a field performance study. During the course of work, other significant factors affecting splice performance were uncovered. Although not covered by the scope of this contract, a brief discussion is presented for the purpose of stimulating interest in what is considered other fruitful areas for improved splice performance.

This resume of the work of the Petroleum and Natural - Gas Division of the Bureau of Mines for the fiscal years 1940 and 1941 is the second of a series. of progress reports . It brings forward from the 1939 annual report information on the course of activities of the division in carrying out its objectives of increased conservation and better utilization of petroleum, natural gas, and related resources through a coordinated program of research and fact - finding . It discusses, also, special assignments. executed for other Government agencies, which in recent years have constituted a considerable part of the division's work ." . In the present national emergency, in which petroleum is so essential , many of the Bureau's research activities bear directly on the availability, conservation, and use of petroleum for national defense . Accordingly, during the past year attention has been focused for the most part.on.problems associated with the needs of national defense . Several long-time researches , which in themselves are potential sources of desirable knowledge , were judged to be of secondary importance under present conditions and accordingly were suspended . Studies also were oriented in line with rapidly changing conditions to meet the demand for accurate findings on short notice . The Petroleum and Natural - Gas Division has experiment stations at Bartlesville , Okla . , and Laramie, Wyo . , a field office at Dallas , Tex . , and a field office and laboratory at San Francisco , Calif . It also operates the Government helium plant near Amarillo , Tex. In addition to the helium operations , some of the petroleum and natural - gas research activities are conducted at the Amarillo plant .

The ever-increasing pressure on the profit margins of ferro-chrome producers and the gradual depletion of deposits of rich hard lumpy chrome ores calls for the ferrochrome industry to maximise the use of fine fractions of concentrates and friable chromite ores. Zimbabwe is endowed with huge deposits of refractory and friable ores that occur on and off the Great Dyke complex. The conventional metallurgical process of smelting of chromite ores in submerged arc furnaces is favoured by the use of refractory hard lumpy ores. The requirement to use all lumpy ore has been circumvented to a large extent at Zimbabwe Alloys. The use of briquetted chrome ore fines in the production of Ferrosilicon Chrome and High Carbon Ferrochrome has yielded positive results over a period in excess of twenty-five years. Of the three industrially used methods of agglomeration of chromite ores; sintering, pelletisation and briquetting, briquetting is preferred because the other two are associated with higher capital and operational cost. Zimbabwe Alloys has developed operational and technical expertise on the briquetting and utilisation of chromite ore fines and concentrates. Variations in the quality of available chromite ore fines imply that their amenability to briquetting is a dynamic problem. Appropriate briquetting parameters to guarantee quality briquettes are essential to the successful use of briquetted chromite ore fines. In developing a technology for briquetting of chromite ores, it is important not only to study the mineralogical and grain-size characteristics of the chromite ore fines but also to make an informed choice of the type and quantity of the binder and the conditions for producing a physically and chemically competent green and cured briquette. This paper discusses Zimbabwe Alloys' experience on the briquetting process and the advantages derived in the smelting of the briquetted chromite ore fines in comparison to the use of conventional lumpy chromite ore with respect to improvements in chromium recovery and as a consequence related efficiencies and unit cost of production.

Coal bumps are brittle, violent failures associated with high stresses and competent host strata. To study bump mechanisms, conditions in the vicinity of a deep longwall mining face in bump-prone strata were monitored using three discrete systems. First, a microseismic monitoring network recorded mining-induced seismic events throughout the mine and surrounding strata. Second, pressure variations and distributions on the longwall shield legs across the face were recorded. Last, tomography surveys imaged seismic transmission properties ahead of the face. Results from the three systems were correlated in an effort to increase understanding of mining-induced stress redistribution and bump potential. An initial, one-week study showed that the correlation between averaged tomogram values and seismically active areas had a coefficient of correlation (R) of 0.89. Further results of these studies demonstrate that the tomography system is capable of imaging heavy shield-leg loading and bump-prone conditions prior to them disrupting the face operations.

However, in every real-world case, the cost of the new material or process is an important property that determines which applications the material or process can be used in. Other properties that are important depend on the applications.A recent press report (1) discussing the potential replacement of aluminum radiators with copper radiators in pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles provides an interesting example to reinforce the importance of cost in materials selection. In this case, the displacement of aluminum by copper is being considered because of the more favorable heat dissipation characteristics of copper. Heat dissipation has become more important due to the development of hotter-burning V-8 and V-6 engines. For this application, engineers also consider cost, weight, size, durability, and manufacturing process. The report stated that the development by the International Copper Association (ICA) of the ""CuproBraze"" manufacturing process for heat transfer products was an important development. This technology produces 845 radiators that weigh less, are more uniform in quality, and are potentially more compact. They are also expected to cost less in high production quantities than copper units produced in the past, last three to four times longer than soldered copper radiators, and the process also eliminates the use of lead solder from the manufacturing process."

CODELCO is considering the implementation of high-density tailings management at the Chuquicamata mine in northern Chile for its long term disposal plan. To achieve this, CODELCO commissioned the design, construction, and operation of a 70 t/d pilot plant, fed by existing tailings. The testing programme was completed in May 2011, and consisted of laboratory rheological and characterization assessments, pipe loop testing, beaching trials, and analyses of deposition behaviour for solid contents ranging from 57?68% (w/w). This paper describes the characteristics of the pilot plant, the testing programme, the beach trial analyses, and the resulting beach profile predictions based on the stream power theory. CODELCO also used other predictive beach slope methods, such as the equilibrium slope concept, which are not discussed in this paper. The final beach profile for design will be selected after an expert analysis of all methods has been completed.

Book Review MANAGEMENT AND MEN. By Meyer Bloomfield, Boston. The Century Co., New York, 1919, pp. 584, H.X. 5 1/2. $3.50. This hook is an exposition of English efforts to solve the problem of labor unrest in England. The first six chapters are reprinted from articles published in the Satur-day Evening Post, for whom the author went to England to study the problem at first hand. These articles deal with housing, increased production, eliminating the internal friction in the industrial machine and a chapter each devoted to the view-point of employer and employee. These chapters are written in the easily readable magazine style and give a complete general survey of the particular solution being tried. Perhaps their greatest., certainly not their least, worth lies in the fact that they form a vehicle for unusually voluminous appendices containing in full the famous Whitley Reports which are the basis of the new movement, together with various reports, which, except for this publication, would be largely inaccessible to those inter-ested in this country. The Whitley scheme considers each industry a unit and proposes to establish therein a Joint Standing Industrial Council composed of representatives of employers and employees to consider appropriate matters affecting the industry at large. There is to be a District Council for each industry which will, as its name implies, deal with the clatters pertaining to that interest in. the particular district. The third and last body in this scheme of Industrial Parliament is the Works Committee, which is com-posed of representatives of the management and of the workers employed in particu-lar plants or mines to act in close cooperation With the district quid national machinery. The Whitley or similar schemes have been tried in many communities in England and the book contains interesting comments on the result obtained, it being notable that most of the objections conic from plants which have not tried the scheme. In 1965 the Western phosphate industry ranked third after Florida and Tennessee in total mine and marketable production of phosphate rock and phosphate rock products. It has become an important regional industry and, since the close of World War II, it has become important in the national phosphate economy. This report includes an evaluation of the trends and outlook for the Western phosphate industry through 1975 as part of the Bureau's program to determine the rate at which the Nation's mineral resources are being utilized. The first part of this report is concerned with the relationship between the Western phosphate industry and that of the United States and the world. It describes the principal phosphate deposits and discusses production, export, and import of phosphate rock and marketable products. The second part of the report is concerned with the Western phosphate industry and discusses trends and outlook through 1975. Projections for the utilization of phosphate rock, phosphate fertilizers, and elemental phosphorus have been developed and extended through 1975 in an effort to provide data and information pertaining to the rate of depletion of the Nation's phosphate resources.

The stringent marketing specifications included in coal contracts mean that coal producers must supply cleaner and more consistent coal than may have been formerly required. Geostatistics has the potential to aid in the accurate estimation of the washability characteristics of coal. A prediction method, the Kriged Service Variable Approach has been developed.A Computer Aided Drafting and Design system has proved useful in the development and application of the approach. The geostatistical approach has been tested against coal geological and borehole data and applications discussed.

Several competing companies, worldwide, are well on the way to building spaceships to land on the Moon and eventually mine the Moon and asteroids for volatiles, rare earth metals and Helium-3. The Google Lunar XPrize offers a $30 million prize1. China has recently landed a spacecraft on the Moon. The European Space Agency, with cooperation from the United States, has landed a spacecraft, Philae, on a comet. And, Mars One is planning a one-way trip to establish a settlement of humans on Mars. How and why are the Moon and asteroids and their resources of interest to private space industry and companies? Why are the Moon and asteroids viewed as a potential business venue? GEOLOGY OF THE MOON AND ASTEROIDS –WHY DO WE WANT TO MINE THERE? Space enterprises are actively working towards establishing and operating lunar and asteroid mining locations for resource extraction, resource processing, conversion to salable products, and distribution of the products and services in space and to Earth and beyond2. Forty-five years ago, the Apollo manned missions to the Moon returned rocks and regolith to Earth, which were studied and analyzed. What they found was that the Moon contains valuable minerals and resources. These minerals are largely due to meteor and asteroid impacts, which have, over eons, created this mineral rich regolith. These impacts have occurred on Earth as well, for billions of years, particularly early on in the history of the solar system. However, on Earth, wind, water, and vegetation have erased most of these impacts. On the Moon, in contrast, the only weathering is caused by subsequent impacts and the solar wind. The Moon regolith contains valuable rare earth minerals, platinum-group minerals (particularly where the Moon has been impacted by asteroids), volatiles (useful for processing and habitation), Helium-3 and titanium. Almost non-existent on earth, Helium-3 is abundant and accessible on the Moon and can be used in nuclear fusion power plants, producing much more energy than fission reactions and with much less radioactive waste. One of the main reasons Helium-3 is sought after as a fusion fuel is because there are no neutrons generated as a reaction product. Governments and private companies focus on mining of Helium-3 on the Moon as a basis for their economic models. Moon Express, one of the private companies who is planning on mining on the Moon, will recover moon rocks to fund its early operations25. Subsequently, it will recover Helium-3, platinum, and rare earth metals, as it engages in surface mining operations."
