"This paper is the sequel to that on Developments in Sintering Efficiency delivered by Davies and Mitchell at the International Ore Dressing Congress, Stockholm, 1957. Attention is drawn to the fundamental concept of sintering as a heat transfer process, in which the ignition heat is continually transferred onward through the bed as a heat wave. By its passage, this heat initiates endothermic 'changes, such as carbonate decomposition, whose energy requirements are supplied by the combustion of the fuel contained in the bed.Ideally, the heat wave should be generated by the ignition hood followed by the pre-heating of the incoming air. The fuel content of the bed should be no more than the theoretical quantity needed to balance the endothermic changes. In practice, the heat wave is seriously short of energy and this is offset by excess fuel in the bed. As a result, sinter quality suffers, more return .fines are produced, and fuel is wasted, a loss of efficiency which could be avoided if the fundamentals of correct ignition were more widely appreciated.Sintering speed, otherwise heat wave velocity, is a function of the rate at which the incoming air acquires .heat from the cooling sinter and imparts it to the unburned feed below the combustion zone. It is thus a function of rate of air flow and so depends on bed permeability>. Ways of• improving and maintaining permeability at the maximum consistent with thorough sintering are discussed, particular reference being made to taconite concentrates. The possibilities of recrystallizing refractory ores into forms more amenable to physical concentration techniques by sintering are visualised, very little expenditure on heat energy being required when the process is operated near the ideal conditions."

The particular purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the development of underground conveying as applied to methods of working coal in the mines of Alberta. Historical A retrospective view of coal mining discloses a continuous effort, on the part of those interested, to substitute mechanical contrivances for hand labour. A patent for a coal-cutting machine was granted to Michael Menzies in 1761, at which time much of the transportation of coal underground was accomplished by means of sledges. Early forms of cutting machines attempted to duplicate the action of a miner's pick, and one hundred years lacer than Menzies? patent we still find this class of machine, driven by water power or compressed air, in use to a limited extent. A coal-cutter using the principle of a circular saw and worked by hand was exhibited in London in 1851, and from these crude beginnings the machines of today have been evolved. Transportation of coal underground has similarly been subject to considerable improvement. The above mentioned Michael Menzies took out a patent in 1750 covering the use of a self-acting incline plane, which is probably the earliest record of any system devised to lighten the load of the crammer or car-pusher of those days. In the year 1868 the Gillot & Copley machine was patented, this being a compressed-air-driven disc coal-cutter which proved highly successful. The chain cutters were a natural development from this type, and for a number of reasons they have been even more successful in the majority of cases.

This report, which covers the period from June 15, 1974 to May 30, 1975, describes the work performed in compliance with the requirements of Contract No. H0242065 and modifications 1, 2, and 3 thereto. The purpose of the original contract was to equip the second shuttle car in the Jewell Ridge No. 12 mine, section 6R, with a refined design canopy and seats. In addition, several refinements and improvements were to be designed and installed at the same location on the cutter and the loader. However, during October 1974 in response to a request from the Technical Project Officer, the contract was modified to eliminate all of the cutter and loader tasks and substitute the design, fabrication, and installation of an improved canopy on the no. 2 roof drill in the above mentioned section of the Jewell Ridge No. 12 mine.

The Lick Fork prospect shows appreciable nickel sulphide mineralization in a narrow, steeply dipping, layered sequence of metamorphosed hornblende peridotite, gahhro and hornblende gahhro, intrusive into the Pedlar Formation (charnockitic pyroxene granulite) of the Virginia Blue Ridge Complex (Precambrian). Rocks of the intrusion have equilibrated to granulite- facies metamorphism, as indicated by pervasive polygonal texture of silicate aggregates, development of biotite- and hornblende-preferred orientation, compositional equilibration of the silicate minerals, the Mg-Fe2+ (orthopyroxene-dino- pvroxene) distribution coefficients (average 0.57), (MgO + FeO + Fe20 3)/Al20 3ratios in orthopyroxenes, and Ti contents and AI(i\)/A I(\i) ratios of hornblendes. The sulphides, consisting of pyrrhotite-pentlandite (with up to 4 wt% Co)-chalcopyrite-pyrite-marcasite-violarite- bornite—mackinawite, are virtually restricted to the ultramafic unit of the intrusion and constitute 20-30% of the samples of hornblende peridotite studied. Although the basal accumulation of the sulphides may suggest magmatic segregation, sulphide- silicate textures typical of sulphide liquid immiscibilitv are not present, even in the sparsely mineralized gahbro units. On the other hand, the transgressive and relict textures are strongly suggestive of replacement of the silicate minerals by sulphides. These include chaleopyrite ± pyrrhotite ± pentlandite (violarite) ± pyrite ±magnetite veins crosscutting silicates, sulphide penetration into silicates at silicate-sulphide contact zones, rounding of silicate grains against sulphide matrix, and islands of silicate minerals (olivine, hornblende, pyroxene, biotite) in sulphide masses. Metamorphic mobilization of pre-existing sul­ phides is a possibility, but involvement of post-metamorphic, hydrothermal fluids is suggested by the following features: paucity of annealing and deformation textures in the sulphides, replacement of metamorphic and deformed silicates, lack of differential sulphide mobilization and the common occurrence of sulphides along grain boundaries and triple junctions of poly gonal silicate aggregates. The consistent association between sulphides and hydrothermal alteration products of silicates suggests that they are cogenetic. The hydrothermal fluids may have merely mobilized and concentrated the pre-existing, disseminated, magmatic sulphides, or there may have been significant addition of sulphides during this process. This question cannot be resolved unequivocally with the existing data.

I. INTRODUCTION. WE owe to the courtesy of Mr. R. M. Raymond, Manager of the El Oro Mining & Railway Co., Ltd., the permission of publishing in this paper the results of a series of experiments and tests made in view of determining the economical limit to which the fine grinding of the ore by tube-mills could be carried on. For the sake of clearness, the following definitions are given of certain terms used in this paper, as well as of the units and screens in the experiments. Slime : In a general way " slime" is that mill-product, of which from 90 to 95 per cent, will pass a 200-mesh screen (0.067 mm. aperture), and which is treated as one class of material in the El Oro cyanide-plants. As a screen-product, slime constitutes all material that *ill pass a 200-mesh, screen. In sizing, the following products are distinguished:- Coarse Sand : That material remaining on a 100-mesh (0.111 mm. aperture) screen. Fine Sand : That passing through. 100-mesh and remaining on a 200-mesh (0.067 mm. aperture) screen. Slime: That passing through 200-mesh. Fines, which pass through 200-mesh and settle in 30 seconds, and silt, which does not settle in 1 minute. "The problem of gold recovery by gravity from high density gangues is first discussed from a fundamental perspective. Three potential difficulties are presented: poor liberation and fine gold particle size, concentrate bed erosion by coarse dense particles, and slow percolation of gold particle through the high density gangue bed. Two case studies are presented to illustrate the impact of these three problems on circuit performance and the feasibility of gravity recovery. It is concluded that careful testing can determine the scope of the first problem and feed preparation can limit the extent of the second. The third problem is clearly the most serious and results in lower gravity recoverable gold recoveries than would be achieved with the same recovery effort on a low density gangue application.IntroductionSince the commercialisation of the Knelson Concentrator in 1980, gold gravity recovery has experienced a surge in interest, in Canada and the United States first, then Australia, Zimbabwe and Russia, and finally worldwide. Table I details number of units sold in various countries, which corresponds approximately to their importance as gold producers 1. Exceptions. such as the low rank of South Africa or the importance of Zimbabwe, despite the much higher gold throughput of the former, are generally the result of differences in the effectiveness of the local marketing strategies, as well as a reflection of the ""philosophy of recovery"" prevalent in the country.The impact of the Knelson has not been felt equally in all plants. Typically, a highly successful application falls into the following categories: (a) alluvial or hard rock recovery for which gravity is the sole recovery method, (b) hard-rock free gold milling with ores which have a very high gravity-recoverable gold (GRG) content, (c) low grade sulphide copper-gold ores which include flotation ahead of cyanidation and (d) free-milling gold ores ahead of Other applications can be successful, but are not as common. The ""explosion"" of centrifuge concentration, of which the Knelson is the most successful but by no means the sole model, has created a certain euphoria which can be summarized as ""gravity recovery will improve the profitability of gold milling, no matter what."" This presentation is about applications that are not so successful, or even downright unsuccessful. The rationale is not to down-play gold gravity recovery, but to set it in its rightful position: metallurgically, it is not appropriate all of the times; it can become inappropriate if poorly designed; and it can be metallurgically possible but economically unjustifiable. In this paper, this will be illustrated and explained rather than demonstrated, with the use of both industrial plant surveys and laboratory test work. Alternate gravity approaches will be suggested."

Froth flotation processes are carried out in flotation cells that are grouped into banks, and these banks are interconnected, forming a flotation circuit. A literature review shows the existence of papers related to flotation circuit design based on mathematical programming. However, due to the complexity of solving the mathematical model in most of the work, it is considered that a small number of species is present in the feed to the circuit, which differs from practice. In addition, simple bank models are generally used. This paper presents a methodology for designing mineral concentration circuits that overcomes the problems mentioned. It allows the use of more suitable cell or bank models and the inclusion of several species. The methodology is based on two phases. The first phase identifies the set of optimal structures using discrete values of stage recoveries, solving several mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problems. In the second phase, the optimal design for each of the structures obtained in the previous phase is determined using a suitable model for the recovery at each cell or bank, which results in a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model. The design of a copper concentration plant with eight species and the design of a zinc concentration plant with three species and five size fractions by species are used to validate the proposed methodology. The structure of the cells in the rougher and cleaner banks deliver structures that are novel.

In the mining and quarry industries, rock fragments are often transported by conveyor belt. To estimate the qualities of the rock fragments (i.e., size distribution and shape), an operator must take samples from the conveyor and manually perform a sieve analysis, which is time-consuming and tedious. Alternatively, an image-analysis system can be used to monitor the fragment quality on a fast moving conveyor belt. However, images of fragments on a fast moving belt vary to such a degree that the quality of any two successive images are not the same, and some of the images are of such poor quality that they are unrecognizable by human eyes. If poor-quality images are directly analyzed by a segmentation algorithm, the analysis will not be satisfactory. To resolve this problem, it is necessary to use an image-classification pro-gram for the automatic selection of fragment images with good quality. Because of this need, an image-classification program was developed and tested both in the laboratory and in the field. Testing of the system on different types of fragments showed that the system works reasonably well.

Both general and project specific information is provided regarding the design and construction of SMW walls. In addition, conclusions are presented that discuss the suitability of this particular application and other possible variations.

The oxidation of sulfides is a complex process involving gaseous products and intermediate species given rise to emission and absorption spectra which carry out important information about the reaction process. This information could be used for on line monitoring of pyrometallurgical reactor if the appropriate sensors were available. We present in this paper an analysis of the concept that has been successfully applied in iron and steel making industry, as well on fuel combustion control, where the spectra measurement gives the possibility for online monitoring and automatic control of high temperature processes. This concept has not been widely applied in the nonferrous pyrometallurgical primary production. The design of new sensors is discussed from the analysis of spectra measurements during flash combustion of copper concentrates at laboratory scale.

In 2006 McNally International Inc. in a Joint Venture partnership with Aecon Constructors was the successful bidder on two York Region Tunnel Projects: Bathurst Collector/Langstaff Trunk Sewers; and YDSS Interceptor Sewer 19th Avenue Project. These projects comprise a total of 13 kilometres of 2.74 meter finished diameter tunnels and are both part of the York Durham Sewer System (YDSS). Both contracts require the use of EPB tunnel boring machines with a precast concrete segmental liner. The following provides an overview the two projects.

THIS is in part a review paper, indicating the various steps that have been taken in developing hindered-settling apparatus, some of the standard data that have been obtained, and some of the conclusions one is led to as to the effect of it in improving concentrating-methods and machinery, and in part it brings in some unpublished work. CAUSES OF LOSS IN ORE-CONCENTRATION. In making a study of the separation of valuable minerals from the waste gangue, particularly by water concentrators, it is necessary to define, first of all, what are the causes of-loss that are likely to interfere with the concentration. Having made this definition; we can then study to see in what way the machines make their losses, and plan remedies for them in an intelligent way. Losses may be stated to occur as included grains, as flat or long grains, as fine free mineral, and as absolute slime. We will take, these up one by one, as follows: Included Grains.-Fig. 1 shows by a set of diagrams how included grains may occur: first, where the heavy mineral grains attached to the quartz are of large size; secondly, where they are of small size ; and thirdly, where very fine particles of heavy mineral are included in the quartz. We have to decide in regard to included grains whether they are rich enough to go direct to, the furnace, or poor enough to throw away, or whether they lie between these two points and require recrushing as the only means of severing the values from the waste. This last case is the only one requiring special treatment at our hands. "The commissioning of the 4th concentrator (C4) at Freeport Indonesia in early 1998 increased total mill throughput from 130k to 230k tonnes per day. The C4 flowsheet consists of a single 38 ft diameter SAG mill, four 24 ft diameter ball mills followed by four banks of 4,500 ft3 WEMCO flotation cells.The design of the C4 rougher flotation circuit was based on the expectation that the copper and gold recoveries achieved with the 4500 ft3 flotation cells would be equivalent to or better than that achieved with the 3,000 ft3 flotation cells in the 3rd concentrator (C3) rougher circuit. This assumption was due to the fact that the C4 flotation feed size would be less than 15% +212 microns compared to the C3 rougher flotation feed size of less than 23% +212 microns. By mid 1998 it had become apparent that the C4 rougher flotation copper and gold recoveries were below those predicted.In order to determine the cause of the lower recoveries, stage by stage rougher flotation surveys were performed in all four concentrators. The results of the surveys showed that the C4 rougher flotation circuit had a lower recovery of +200 micron material than that achieved in the C 1, C2 and C3 concentrators. Through mineralogical analysis, it was determined that a majority of the copper contained in the +200 micron fractions was liberated and recoverable. This paper describes the steps taken to increase coarse particle recovery, overall plant recovery and the results achieved."

"A ball charge dynamics model is presented. Simulation results are compared with observed data showing good correlation. Based on the charge dynamics models, a liner wear model is presented along with some wear simulation results. Using the charge dynamics model with the liner wear model, it is possible to envision the predictions of mill power consumption as a function of liner wear. Further work is needed to validate the liner wear model.IntroductionFrom a process control point of view, industrial systems can be considered stationary or non-stationary. For example, the physical properties, such as geometric and/or material, of a system considered stationary do not change with time. However, this is not true for non-stationary systems such as those found in the mining industry where process dynamics are often violent with wear being an intrinsic process phenomenon.In this paper, a model for ball charge dynamics will be presented along with a description for liner wear. Simulation results for power draft prediction using the charge model will be compared with observed data. Further, liner wear results will also be presented."

The main train station of Leipzig in Germany is currently being upgraded from a head station to a partially thru station. In order to achieve this, significant ground improvements are necessary. Soil freezing for example is used to create the excavation box retaining walls. The freezing works will be carried out from two tunnels with an inner diameter of 2.4 m (~ 8ft). The tunnels were constructed by the pipe jacking method. The cutter head of the machine was equipped with discs and scrapers. Driving and excavation was carried out using a bentonite supported face. Due to the small arrival shafts, the machine had to be lifted out in components. The essential limitation of settlements during the drives was achieved even better than expected.

This report describes the timed release analysis technique that was developed to serve as a tool for assessing the froth flotation cleaning potentials of fine-size coals. Using this developed technique, 16 coals from 10 different coalbeds were tested. All of the coals included in this study were quite amenable to froth flotation with float coal yields ranging from 80.7 to 99.5 percentage points. Float-and-sink analyses of the coals tested are shown to be of limited value in predicting froth flotation cleaning potential. Generally the float-and-sink analyses indicated a better product could be obtained than froth flotation could provide; although, in four of the coals tested froth flotation results were superior to those expected from the gravimetric analysis. The fixed carbon content of the samples collected was found to correlate with the floatability of the coals. The higher rank coals were the most readily floatable coals while the lower rank coals did not respond quite as well to flotation.

A new method, the gliding cylinder method, was proposed as a wide range viscometer for the measurements of molten salts, slags, and glasses. The method consists of two coaxial cylinders, cylindrical bob and a vessel containing a liquid sample. There is a narrow gap between bob and vessel. When the vessel moves against the bob, the generated force on the bob consists of three types of resistance: (1) Stokes’s resistance on the bob, (2) a capillary flow resistance though an annular gap between vessel and bob, and (3) lubricating resistance in a gap. The last two can be calculated on a theoretical basis but the first cannot be estimated by a simple calculation since a wall effect did not calculate easily. However, it can be assumed that the generated force depends on both the viscosity of a liquid and velocity of the vessel. Thus, the relation between viscosity and a force at desired velocity of the vessel was measured using several standard reference materials including glycerol aqueous solutions and standard reference oils. The results depended on the magnitude of the gap between the bob and the vessel. For the wider gap, it was shown that the viscosity is a linear function of a gradient of force with respect to a vessel velocity. In contrast, if the gap is small, the viscosity depends on the gradient (of force with respect to velocity). This implies that the non-linear phenomena would occur in Stokes resistance. Though detailed analysis is in a further investigation, a calibration method can be applied to determine the viscosity by this method, because good correlation was obtained among these quantities. Viscosity of molten salts, such as NaNO3and ZnCl2was measured by this method as high temperature demonstration. A limpeza e a reoxidação de um aço SAE 1055 modificado foram avaliadas durante a sua produção em uma aciaria elétrica. Escória A no sistema óxido CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3-CaF2 (CSMA-F) e escórias B e C no sistema óxido CaO-SiO2-MgO-Al2O3 (CSMA) foram analisadas. Duas amostras de aço foram coletadas em ambiente industrial: forno panela e barra laminada. ASPEX Explorer foi utilizado para obter informações sobre as inclusões, organizando-as por composição química, tamanho, densidade e tipo. FactSage v7.2 calculou as inclusões formadas durante a solidificação do aço, fração líquida e sólida das escórias e viscosidade da fração líquida. Após o refino secundário, o tipo mais comum de inclusão encontrada foram os aluminatos de cálcio. Na barra laminada, o espinélio foi o tipo de inclusão mais frequente, indicando um possível produto de reoxidação. Sua formação pode ser causada devido a interação com os materiais utilizados no distribuidor e molde. A redução da temperatura também favorece a formação de espinélios, como demonstrado pelo FactSage. As inclusões de espinélio foram analisadas pelo método Função de Densidade Populacional (PDF), que identificou que as corridas A1, A2, C1 e C2 apresentavam inclusões de espinélio formadas por reoxidação. Uso de escória no sistema CSMA é indicado já que eventos de reoxidação foram diminuídos nas corridas B1 e B2. No entanto, é necessária uma análise mais profunda dos materiais utilizados no distribuidor e molde para melhorar a limpeza do aço SAE 1055.
