The Brightwater regional wastewater treatment facility, under construction in King County, WA, includes an extensive conveyance system that will feature deep, soft-ground tunnels and shafts. Excavation of the Ballinger Way Receiving Portal to 65.8 m (216 ft) below grade through challenging geology was accomplished by means of artificial ground freezing. This paper discusses freeze design development, system installation and monitoring, and the contractual and construction challenges that were overcome, including work sequencing and excavation means and methods, together with lessons learned.

"The Yukon's numerous (185) placer gold mines are still a major social and economic force in this developing economy. Gold recovery at each of the various sluiceboxes is not optimized due to extremely difficult sampling logistics and a shortage of technical expertise and industrial research.At each of six operating placer mines, numerous sluicebox tailings samples were collected with hand held sample cutters and combined into large (2-7 cubic yards) duplicate samples. The entire sample volumes were screened and processed on a shaking table to determine gold losses. Present-day interest in the question of "dirty steel" has arisen primarily from the increasingly rigid specifications on various grades of steel and from the growing conviction that non-metallic inclusions are the source of many of the difficulties in meeting these specifications. The importance of inclusions has unquestionably been over-emphasized in many cases, but on the other hand many unpublished instances could be recorded where all evidence pointed to inclusions as the primary cause for the failure of steel in rolling or in service. The solution of the problem of dirty steel is not a matter of a few years. There are almost numberless types of inclusions. They segregate in steel ingots in an entirely different manner from other impurities, and, at best, only a start has been made in developing correct analytical methods for their determination. Most of the writers in the field have expressed opinions rather than given facts, and so many variables enter into the manufacture of steel that a study of plant conditions is difficult unless definite facts on certain phases of the inclusion problem are available. This statement is not intended to convey the idea that little work has been done on this problem. On the other hand, the number of investigations has been large, but in most cases too many variables have been present to allow definite conclusions to be drawn. In the body of the text, reference to previous investigations is made at suitable points. Rather than burden the reader with a lengthy review of the literature on the general subject of inclusions, reference to the particular works pertinent to the subject matter of the bulletin has been discussed. This study elucidates a new idea to predict mine fire levels by employing several machine learning techniques. A total of 120 patterns of various mine fire influencing parameters, such as oxygen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and temperature, were compiled from the Adularya coal mine in Turkey. Techniques like t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) and k-means clustering were used to process the data, and support vector classification (SVC) was executed to predict various levels of the mine fire. The results revealed that the proposed model has higher credibility to predict the various levels of underground mine fires.

A quantitative model based on strain accumulation in multi-pass rolling is developed to overcome a large critical strain for dynamic recrystallisation in a Nb microalloyed steel with high Mn content (HTP steel). The larger the critical strain for dynamic recrystallisation, the finer is the dynamically recrystallised grain size. The initial mill trial showed that it is feasible to achieve ultra-fine grain size by dynamic recrystallisation but the prevention of static recrystallisation in between passes is identified as an essential condition to suppress mixed grain size. The data-base on static softening kinetics at short interpass time was experimentally determined on WUMSI and incorporated in the model. The model is used to optimise the strip rolling schedule to prevent static recrystallisation in the interpass time. The rolling simulation of strip rolling schedule has validated the model prediction that it is possible to obtain a uniform ultra-fine ferrite grain size of about 1-2 micrometer diameter in final ferrite microstructure for industrial rolling parameters. A user friendly software package has been developed to apply the model for off-line control of mill processing parameters, i.e., time-temperature-deformation schedule of finish rolling in order to accumulate large strain to overcome a large critical strain for dynamic recrystallisation. The model is a powerful predictive tool for grain size control in multi-pass rolling.

In December 2010, a trial of borehole radar technology was conducted to test the usefulness of the technique in better refining the position and geometry of narrow vein orebodies away from the primary data sources of drilling and mapping of development excavations. This paper summarises the reasons why the technique was applied, describes the testing methods selected and summarises the outcomes of the trial.Poor reconciliations of recovered metal from a section of an orebody at Jundee mine site, Western Australia, led to an investigation that identified insufficient understanding of the geometry of a narrow vein orebody as a potential cause. This orebody was situated between mapped development excavations and away from surrounding drill holes. Borehole radar was identified as a possible technique that could supply information on vein location and continuity away from other data sources allowing more accurate orebody modelling and subsequent stope optimisation.A borehole radar instrument (10 - 100 MHz frequency) was inserted into pairs of purpose-drilled boreholes on either side of relatively well-constrained mineralisation and the radar reflection data was collected. This process was repeated in five locations across the mine to represent the most common geological settings, lithologies and orebody varieties encountered at Jundee to determine the suitability of applying the technique in each of these settings. Collected, processed and interpreted radar data was compared to other geology data collected independently for verification and interpretation.Conclusions drawn from the analysis were that the technique could effectively determine the following features of the mineralised veins in the majority of test environments: geometry of veins, magnitude of offsets where structures intersect and orientations of planar structures with short strike length. The technique was very useful in selecting the appropriate structural interpretation where available data could lead to multiple, equally likely, interpretations.CITATION:Kemp, C and Morgan, G, 2012. Comingling filtered tailings and waste rock in a tailingsdominated mixture is a mine waste management strategy that has the potential to create geotechnically and geochemically stable landforms. Potentially acid-generating (PAG) waste rock can be sequestered within a filtered tailings matrix to enhance water retention and decrease hydraulic conductivity relative to a waste rock pile, potentially minimizing acid rock drainage (ARD). Enhanced water retention can reduce oxygen ingress limiting oxidation and resultant acid generation. Reduced hydraulic conductivity can slow inward percolation and outward drainage. In dry climates, the tailings matrix can hold precipitation near the ground surface accessible to evaporation and transpiration, thereby decreasing percolation. This paper presents an evaluation of comingled filtered tailings and waste rock in a tailings-dominated mixture (termed GeoWaste herein) and illustrates that ARD can be reduced under field conditions in a subtropical–highland climate.

China’s burgeoning economy is responsible for a major share of recent world mineral consumption increases. In addition to factors traditionally recognized in market economies1 and factors unique to specific commodities, Chinese consumption now plays a major and increasingly important role in energy and mineral markets for many commodities, such as aluminum, copper, iron and steel, and oil. China has the world’s second largest economy after the United States. And its long-term importance to the minerals markets is even greater than indicated by its gross domestic product (GDP), which is currently less than two-thirds of that of the United States (Table 1). This is because China’s rising standard of living is accompanied by rapid industrialization and urbanization. Its consumption of mineral materials for infrastructure development for its very large population is significantly greater per capita than that of such developed economies as the United States, the European Union and Japan. In other words, China’s per capita production is rising at a rapid rate and will probably continue to do so for many years.

The following is a Maintainability Design Checklist for coal mining equipment. The purpose of the checklist is to provide a summary of design review points for the maintainability assessment of new or existing underground equipment. It specifically focuses on the identification of equipment design features, tasks, or procedures that impact equipment downtime, repair costs, labor hours and maintainer skill level requirements. Some checklist points are general in nature. The checklist was designed to be used across all categories of underground equipment. The intent is to draw attention to design features and maintenance procedures that will increase maintainability requirements. You are encouraged to adapt this checklist to site specific or machine specific requirements by: Inserting specific performance criteria for various categories of maintenance tasks. For example; all hydraulic lines on a shuttle car should be replaceable in 15 minutes or 25 minutes, etc. Adding or deleting checklist items for different categories of equipment. You would include environmental control equipment, for example, on face equipment and not on shuttle cars or man trips. Adding additional checklist items based on site or equipment specific maintenance histories or experience, company maintenance standards, or other factors.

The concept of green mining is to improve the mining industry in a holistic way so that it is safe, efficient, and environmentally sustainable. The purpose of this study was to develop an evaluation index system of green surface mining based on the theory of green grades. The evaluation model is comprised of three attributes (safety, efficiency, and environment), nine criteria, and 35 indicators. The fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method was used to determine the weights of indicators by taking into consideration degree centrality, closeness centrality, and betweenness centrality. Findings indicate that the environment is the most critical aspect of green surface mining, followed by efficiency and safety. The top five ranked green mining success indicators were the application of new technology, starting-off-rate of equipment, science and technology input to total investment, the number of accidents (decreased), and the production (increased). It was observed that more improvements are needed to overcome water, air, waste, and sound pollution. Attention should also be paid to land reclamation and post-mining land uses, which are key factors in green mining. The proposed model can be applied to evaluate and improve the level of green surface mining in other regions. This study provides a tool for decision-makers that can offer technical assistance to green mining.

Nowadays, with such a focus on environmental protection, surface mining activities have come under pressure to ensure their activities do not adversely affect the local surroundings. As part of the extractive process, blasting activities are an integral part of a mining company’s operational cycle. Consequently achieving beneficial blast results while complying with environmental requirements has become a key focus. This especially is the case when firing blasts within close proximity of residents where additional control measures need to be implemented to control vibration. One case where this occurs in Indonesia is in the Paringin Pit, one of the operational areas of the company's. The pit has complex geological conditions and is surrounded by several residential areas. Between 2014 to 2017 there were 12 cases of ground vibration exceedance due to blasting. As part of a continuous improvement project the company's targeted minimizing the vibration exceedance in this area. A project was undertaken to research and develop a method to confidently predict vibration. It was decided that the scaled distance formulas were not adequate to predict vibration when using non-electric detonators, as accurate wave propagation could not be achieved. The problem is how to manage of complex geology condition related with wave propagation in ground vibration control. Geological condition mapping with specific spatial range can and combine with Signature Hole Analysis be a solution to make wave propagation easier to accommodate in ground vibration control. With this new approach geological condition mapping with specific spatial range was produced that would minimize vibration while ensuring beneficial blast results. Introducing the new prediction produced nil cases of vibration exceedance in 2018 and beyond and proved that the Signature Hole Analysis in specific spatial range of geological condition is the preferred method to optimize blast result and maintain vibration control.

Idaho has nearly 6 billion tons of potential sources of phosphorite, 10 to 31 percent P2O5' above and within 100 feet below entry level, the largest potential of any State in the United States. In 1963 Idaho ranked third after Florida and Tennessee in total mine and marketable production of phosphate rock; Montana ranked fourth. This report describes phosphate deposits, mines, and prospects in 10 districts covering most of the Idaho phosphate field. All mine production of phosphate rock in Idaho comes from surface mines and is processed to phosphate fertilizers, phosphoric acid, and elemental phosphorus. Producing districts are Fort Hall (Gay mine), Trail Creek (Conda and Ballard mines), and Crow Creek (Georgetown Canyon mine). FMC Corp. and J. R. Simplot Co. at Pocatello have the largest elemental phosphorus and fertilizer production facilities, respectively, in the State, followed by Monsanto Co. and El Paso Natural Gas Products Co. (formerly Central Farmers Fertilizer Co.). The only other major phosphate processing plant in the State is the phosphoric acid and phosphate fertilizer complex at Kellogg operated by the Bunker Hill Co. In 1963 a plant was constructed and put on line at Monsanto, Idaho, to recover vanadium from ferrophosphorus produced by electric furnace operations in the area. El Paso Natural Gas Products Co. completed construction of a fertilizer and phosphoric acid plant near Conda in 1965. There is a small fertilizer plant producing phosphate fertilizers for local consumption in Soda Springs.

The Golden Cross Gold Mine is located at the head of the Waite kauri Ri ver, 8 km northwest of Waihi near the southern end of the Coromandel Range. The mine produces gold and silver from epithermal veins hosted by Miocene andesitic flows and pyroclastics of the Coromandel Group. Golden Cross is owned in joint venture by Coeur Gold NZ Ltd (80 per cent) and Viking Mining Company Ltd (20 per cent). Mining is by open pit and underground methods. Mineralisation in a near-surface sheeted/stockworked vein zone is mined from the open pit. The deeper Empire Vein System is mined from underground where higher grade mineralisation is restricted to generally discrete veins. The open pit stockwork zone is west of and offset from the updip trend of the Empire Vein System. The Empire (hangingwall) Vein strikes generally north-northeast and dips steeply west. Dips become subvertical at greater depth. The hangingwall vein is a well developed, generally continuous structure with relatively high gold grades. A complex footwall vein system forms shallow west-dipping offshoots to the hangingwall vein. Structure and gold grades become increasingly erratic away from the hangingwall vein. The better developed footwall veins carry economic grades and high 'spot' grades over 50 g/t Au are not uncommon. Highest gold grades are associated with tightly crustiform banded sections of quartz veins and with dark fine grained siliceous breccias. The main hangingwall vein occupies a major north-northeast trending fault structure, the Empire Fault. Footwall veining forms within subordinate splinter fault zones. There has been extensive multidirectional pre-, syn- and post-mineralisation faulting. Fault manifestation is highly dependent on host rock characteristics. The central part of the hangingwall vein and surrounding silicified country rock has been shattered by a major fault structure, the West Mine Fault, forming a poorly consolidated, blocky quartz-breccia ore zone. Away from the more brittle ore zones and associated silicified envelope, wide clay-filled shears mark the major fault trends. Development of the deposit is considered to have occurred in two distinct stages related to separate episodes of dilational jog movement on the Empire Fault. The first phase reactivated the pre-existing Empire Fault as a dilational fissure with subordinate splinters on the footwall side. The Empire Vein System (hangingwall and associated footwall veining) formed during this phase. A second phase of renewed movement with further dilation resulted in more extensive fracturing of the Empire Vein and surrounding country rock and formed the sheeted/stockwork veining of the open pit. An upwards/westward migration of the hydrothermal system is assumed but fluid pathways between underground and open pit veining are unclear. Ore extraction and mining geology methods have responded to improved understanding of the grade and structural variability, and changing ground conditions inherent in the vein system. The underground mine produces ore from flatback cut and fill, post-pillar and bench stopes. Open pit and underground ores are campaign milled through a conventional CIP plant.

New buildings in today's urban environment, especially in down-town areas, invariably involve the construction of multiple level basements. Used for parking, storage and commercial space, these underground structures normally extend 30 to 50' and more below grade and, to make optimum use of expensive land, they usually occupy the full site right up to street/sidewalk and property lines. SOIL SUPPORT SOLUTIONS Building these basements requires vertical excavation, and consequently, a temporary soil support system which will eventually be replaced by the permanent foundation walls of the structure.

The characterization of rare-earth resources in 3D is now possible using high-resolution X-ray microtomography (HRXMT) to describe ore texture and mineral phase composition. In addition, detailed texture analysis, including grain exposure and mineral association, can be described. Preliminary examination of a sample of Mountain Pass ore is reported to describe the spatial distribution of the mineral phases (calcite, barite and bastnaesite), particularly the grain size distribution of bastnaesite. The examination includes analysis of selected particle size classes to determine the appropriate size for liberation of the rare-earth mineral bastnaesite. Good liberation is expected to be achieved if the material is ground to a top size of -150 µm.

During the past few years, the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been evaluating developments in sealant support systems from a ground control perspective. The proper selection and use of a sealant material can significantly enhance ground control which may result in a decrease in worker related injuries due to ground falls. The purpose of this paper is threefold: to briefly review the current state-of-the-art technology in shotcrete and membrane developments, to evaluate the preliminary findings of a long-term underground study of various types of sealant materials, and to examine installation practices that are critical for an effective sealant material. The underground study utilizes NIOSH’s Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine to evaluate the long-term performance of several types of shotcrete and membrane materials. Sealant performance to date have been evaluated on a regular basis over a two year period. Although the study is still ongoing, critical mining practices were identified that may seriously effect the bond of the sealant materials to the mine roof and rib; most notably, the importance of scaling and thorough cleaning of the rib prior to application. Also, results froman extensive series of Schmidt Hammer tests found that the shotcrete increased in strength by 70% during the humid summer months.

Advanced optimizing control of the fluidised bed zinc roaster has been in use for an extended period at Boliden Kokkola and the implications are seen as extended bed stability, increased throughput and far better on-line availability. The roaster furnace control system developed is based on a dynamic and predictive furnace model, with parameters determined experimentally at the site. The controller maximises the concentrate feed and keeps the furnace operational parameters inside limits given by raw material mix and equipment constraints. The products of a zinc roaster, calcine, sulphur dioxide and the side products, such as mercury, meet gradually more stringent requirements, in particular as to their assays and total recoveries in the process chain. The end users of sulphuric acid in northern Europe, among others in the pulp and paper industry, require mercury levels much less than the conventional 0.2-0.4 ppm Hg. Therefore, secondary de-mercurising circuits have been used over the last five years for further cleaning the SO2 stream allowing production acid grades with less than 0.08 ppm Hg.

The Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) provides a cost effective solution for the rapid construction of retaining and cut-off walls using new equipment developed from diaphragm wall cutter technology. CSM consists of cutting and mixing drums mounted on compact hydraulic motors. Soletanche Bachy CSM has been designed to leave the space above the tool free, thereby mixing the soil efficiently during all the phases of the wall construction, with high penetration rates. The precise positioning and verticality of the wall is achieved using a kelly bar and full monitoring. Soletanche Bachy CSM is a versatile equipment which can be mounted on various carriers: pile rigs, hydraulic crane, carrier equipped with telescopic mast. The major phases of Soletanche Bachy CSM development are presented, including the results of an extensive trial carried out in Le Havre (France). The soil consists of hydraulic fill with soft soil lenses overlying sandy deposits. 20m deep panels were constructed to support a rectangular shaft. During the construction, and after its completion, the shaft was subjected to an extensive series of tests followed by a partial excavation. The paper discusses also the future development of the technique and its potential applications.

Port Gaspé is located on the back side of Gaspé bay and is protected by a natural sand barrier with a length of 2,5 km, from which it got its name, Gaspé Sandy Beach (1). Since 1904 the Gaspé region had a deep water wharf, initially very different, in fact, from the one existing just before the recent reconstruction (2). This wharf with a length of 228 m and a width of 23 m was build of timber cribs. The outside walls of these cribs had been doubled with a wooden wall, creosote impregnated to provide resistance to decay and to the attack of marine organisms (limnorias) (3). Fifteen years ago the upper part of the wood construction had to be removed, because of progressing rottenness and was replaced by an L-shaped reinforced concrete structure (4).
