The ?yield plastic? rheological model describes the flow behaviour of a variety of non-settling suspensions, including many types of mineral slurry. The current paper presents the laminar flow relationship (pressure gradient vs. flow rate) for a yield plastic fluid flowing through a pipe or cylinder. Simplified algebraic equations, suitable for engineering purposes, are presented for yield plastic fluids with values of the scaling factor in the range that includes most industrially important slurries. The laminar pipe flow relationship is one of the most important fluids engineering calculations. It may be used to determine the rheological parameters of a material in a capillary rheometer or flow loop. If the rheology is known, these relationships may be used to determine the laminar flow pressure gradient in pipelines of various sizes.

THE Round Table. on Qualities of Pig Iron, under the auspices of the Joint Committee on Qualities of Pig Iron, which is made up of members of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, the American Foundrymen's Association, the American Society for Testing Materials, the Gray Iron Institute, and the. Malleable Iron Institute, was held at the Palmer House, Chicago, Ill., on Oct. 1, 1935. PROCEEDINGS R. H. SWEETSER,* New York, N. Y.-Seven years ago last June we had a round table on qualities of pig iron1, and at that time the foundrymen were out with their battle-axes for the blast-furnace men, and the open-hearth men were doing the same thing. After that meeting there was really a determined effort to find out about the qualities of pig iron, and great progress has been made all along the line. This afternoon we want to have a frank discussion of the qualities of pig iron, whether it is the molten pig iron going into the steel plant, or cold pigs going to the different foundries. We ought to hear something from Dr. J. T. MacKenzie, who is chairman of the Joint Committee, and from Mr. R. E. Kennedy, the tech-nical secretary. J. T. MACKENZIE, t Birmingham, Ala.-As a result of that meeting in Chicago, there was considerable agitation in the Foundrymen's Association to develop a set of tests for pig iron. One of the difficulties was that nobody talked the same language on shrinkage, draws, live iron, dead iron, and so forth, which were the main com-plaints against pig iron. By request of a committee of the Foundrymen's Association, the Bureau of Standards ran a comprehensive set of tests that did develop the prin-ciples governing the optical pyrometer as applied to cast iron and pig iron. Then the Bureau went on further with the fluidity test, and developed a method for the absolute changes of volume at the freezing point.

The Capitol Area East End Complex is currently being constructed under contract with the State of California Department of General Services on two sites adjacent to the grounds of the California State Capitol Building in downtown Sacramento. The complex will consolidate the headquarters of the Departments of Health Services and Education, which currently occupy several facilities located throughout Sacramento. When completed in 2003, the complex will be the largest civic office project in California history, with approximately 1.5 million square feet of office space and housing nearly 6,300 state workers. The total project is being constructed on five separate blocks in downtown Sacramento, Blocks 171 through 174 and 225. Separate design/build contracts were executed for the construction on Blocks 171 through 174 and the construction on Block 225. The scope of this paper is limited to construction on Blocks 171 through 174, which comprise a square, two blocks on a side, bounded by 15th, 17th, L, and N streets, located immediately to the east of Capitol Park and the State Capitol Building, as pictured in the image shown below.

El yacimiento de La Zanja ubicada en el caserío La Zanja, Santa Cruz de Succhabamba, Cajamarca, inició sus actividades de exploración en 1991 y las de producción en el 2010. MLZ construyó el embalse o reservorio llamado Bramadero, que acumula las aguas de escorrentía de la quebrada del mismo nombre durante el periodo de lluvias, las cuales son empleadas para el consumo humano en la unidad minera, y en menor escala durante la época de estiaje para los procesos de operación. En este sentido, el presente texto señala la construcción de la presa Bramadero, la cual genera agua para beneficio de las poblaciones ubicadas aguas abajo de las instalaciones. Asi también cuenta con un programa de monitoreo ambiental para vigilar la calidad y la cantidad de aguas superficiales y subterráneas. Por tal motivo, cuenta con estaciones hidrométricas para evaluar en tiempo real la calidad del agua en los cuerpos receptores del área de influencia de la unidad minera.

THE important permanent-magnet alloys 15 years ago contained carbon and depended upon it for their permanent- magnet properties. In recent years great, advances have been made in a number of new alloys substantially free of carbon. These include Remalloy,l an alloy of iron, cobalt, and molybdenum, the various iron- nickel-aluminum alloys of the Mishima2 type, and the more recent Alnico V3 in which the best properties are developed by heat-treating in a magnetic field. The Mishima and the Alnico types of alloys are very brittle and after casting must be ground to size. This article describes a permanent-magnet material4 that can be machined as cast, and when handled with some care can be .rolled to thin sheet and drawn to fine wire. Optimum magnetic properties are developed by a simple heat- treatment, and at this time the ductility A of the alloy disappears. If the cast alloy is heat-treated without cold-working the magnetic energy product is about 1.0 X 106. This material is called Vicalloy I (pronounced vicalloy, V for vanadium, I for iron, and C for cobalt). When the alloy is first hot-worked and then considerably reduced in area by cold-swaging, drawing or grooved rolling, it is found that after heat-treatment the magnetic energy product measured in the direction of previous extension can be increased to 2.0 to 3.5 X l06. These higher values have been obtained only after reductions in area of 75 to 95 per cent, and since the material hardens considerably during working, the reduction ordinarily can be accomplished only in fine wires, although larger sizes can be reduced by the use of powerful machinery. When the material has been cold- worked in such a manner as to improve its energy product substantially, it is called Vicalloy II. Commercial use of Vicalloy has been made in the recording of speech. Tape 0.002 by 0.050 in. has been found superior in quality to all others tried, and is now used in the Western Electric Mirrorphone In a variety of forms Vicalloy I or II is useful in many laboratory instruments, and in experiments in which the sizes and shapes required cannot be obtained with the other more brittle permanent-magnet materials. In 1936, during a study of other age- hardening magnetic systems, it occurred to the author that some of the iron-cobalt-vanadium alloys might be suitable for permanent magnets. The proportions of iron, cobalt, and vanadium were varied and a range of alloys of particular interest was found, as shown by the indicated area in Fig. I. The limits of this range of com- position are 30 to 52 per cent iron, 36 to 62 per cent cobalt, and 4 to 16 per cent vanadium. The compositions indicated by points outside this area were also tested. Ecuador a gross domestic product (GDP) grew 8% despite a slowdown in production and sales of petroleum, the dominant economic sector. Crude petroleum exports, which amounted to about 35% of total exports in 1977, were valued et $484 million,2 a decrease of 14% from 1976 values. Petroleum export sales were depressed because foreign buyers were somewhat uncertain that State-owned Corporación Estatal Petrólera Ecuatoriana (CEPE) held legal title to the oil until final settlement with Ecuadorian Gulf Oil Corp. In addition to the legal complication, Ecuador maintained a relatively high export price for oil until late in the year. There was also a shrinkage of traditional U.S, markets owing to the Alaskan pipeline becoming operational and an increased availability of Mexican supplies. The export market was also affected by increased domestic production in Peru and Chile, which lessened their import needs, and the pressure of greater competition from the Middle East in supplying crude oil to Caribbean refineries. About 20.4 million barrels or 40% of Ecuador's total crude exports went to the United States. Only 27 wells were drilled in Ecuador during L977; of these, 16 produced oil, 3 were dry holes, and 8 were suspended. About 31 wells were planned for 1978. Three new oilfields were discovered during 1977; two by CEPE in northeastern Ecuador and one by the Argentine State oil company Yacimientos Petraliferos Fiscales (YPF), operating in Ecuador under a service contract. The commercial extraction of metals from manganese nodules on an industrial scale requires more than 50% of the investment necessary to realize manganese nodule mining. This is mainly due to the fact that a completely new metallurgical processing scheme for the extraction of both base metals (Ni, Cu, Co) and high-tech metals (Mo, Li, Ga) has to be developed and upgraded to industrial scale. There are a number of conventional processing technologies that combine hydro- and pyro-metallurgical approaches such as the INCO and CUPRION processes which have been developed in the 1970s and 1980s. Today, new approaches based on selective leaching with chelating agents and bioleaching try to minimize energy consumption and waste production. All of these extraction methods require knowledge how the metals are structurally bound in the manganese oxides. In this contribution we will review the current knowledge about the mineralogy of iron and manganese minerals in the different marine oxide deposits, present our results, and discuss the possible consequences for metal extraction.

When a new bridge was needed across the upper reaches of the Yellowstone River in Montana, removing the old concrete bridge piers became an environmental concern for the highway department engineers. The location is about fifty miles downstream from the north edge of Yellowstone Park. The determination was made by the federal and state agencies charged with protecting the resource, that the old piers had to go but the river bed had to remain unchanged. Concerns were expressed that removing the concrete presented the potential for environmental damage to this protected portion of the river. These concerns prompted the state to place stringent restrictions on the contractor in the way they carried out the demolition and disposal of the piers. The reinforced concrete masses had to be removed to an elevation at least fifteen feet below the river bed and every bit of concrete debris had to be removed from the river channel. Explosive removal was discouraged, but the only other options: saw cutting, mechanical or chemical breaking, were not viable.

The liquid crystal display (LCD) are currently known by its vast application in electro ? electronic devices, amongst them can be detached the devices of TV, laptops, electronic date, calculators and even though the mobile telephones (mobiles). The mobiles are changed more frequent of the TV for example, this happens due to the technology advance. With the constantly mobile exchange, the batteries, printed circuit board and liquid crystal display accumulation its become an environmental problem. To minimize the environmental impacts caused by mobile telephones residues are considered the segregation process of the LCDs main components, to goal to recover the recycle material. This process involves the use of treatment ore techniques with disc, hammers and balls mills. The process with best efficiency (about 98%) of LCD glass release was the hammers mill. The glass recovered can be used in the glass recycling and the sand substitution in the production of concrete blocks.

A super-conducting high gradient magnetic separator with matrix vibration in dry separation mode is a powder purification device, which has been used to remove weakly magnetic impure particles from fine calcite powders below 53 µm in this study. A fundamental question concerned is the evolution of the matrix clogging under gas-solids loads. This paper presents the improvement of the separation selectivity using a method of mechanically based vibration on the matrix in the separator. The functions of the matrix vibration are discussed. The results indicated that the mechanically based vibration on the matrix within a high intensity magnetic field while a feed was introduced in an air stream, was found to be effective for the dry purification of fine powder materials.

An attempt has been mace in this publication to present annotated references to all articles pertaining, to ore dressing that were published during 1931 and 1932; in a few instances reference is made to articles published prior to 1931 where the articles have not been included in previous bibliography appended to the annual statistical discussions of ore concentration published by the Bureau of Mines. Articles have been taken from more than 75 periodicals, journals, serials, etc., and 423 articles are abstracted herewith. A number of these abstracts, particularly those appearing in foreign publications, have been taken from Chemical Abstracts (published by the American Chemical Society, Easton, Pa.), the general use of which the authors wish to acknowledge. Other annotations were taken directly from the original publications. The entire field of ore dressing has been included in the bibliography and articles dealing with crushing, grinding classification, concentration, thickening, and filtration have been included, as well as on amalgamation, cyanidation, leaching, magnetic concentration, washing, etc., and on theory and laboratory operation. The articles are arranged in alphabetical order by authors. Lack of printing funds prohibited the inclusion of a subject index.

Introduction Research has shown that when an emergency occurs, work-ers often do not get the information they need to take appropriate action. Important information about incidents is either not com-municated effectively or not at all to those affected by the event. The "Emergency Communication Triangle" safety talk focuses on the content of emergency warning messages. It presents a procedure using mental cues that can be used by senders and receivers of emergency warnings. The talk includes graphics for use during the presentation, as well as references for more information. Background Interviews with 48 miners who had escaped one of three different underground mine fires revealed that warning information provided to them was inadequate. Either insufficient information was provided to miners inby the fire areas or they failed to ask the questions needed to let them plan and execute an effective escape. Most of the miners who evacuated from these three mines did not have information that would allow them to make decisions about efficient escapes. The communication breakdown came from two directions: (1) the individuals providing the warning did not offer details about the situations even though some were known and (2) the individuals who received the warnings did not ask for clarification of the situation. The lack of information allowed miners to continue attempting to place cues into normal frameworks after they should have evaluated the situation as abnormal and threatening. The uncertainty created by the lack of information influenced their decision-making and therefore their actions. Approach Researchers at the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory have developed a training intervention that can be used by senders and receivers of warnings during a mine emergency. This material was developed for use in short safety training sessions such as start-of-shift safety talks. The information can be presented in about 15 minutes. Although the illustrations were taken from the underground coal mining industry, the training can be tailored to any work setting by substituting appropriate examples. How It Works During the safety talk, miners learn about the six categories of critical information that should be provided during emergency communications: Who, Where, What, Miners, Event, and Response. • Who: When reporting an emergency or receiving a warning, the first thing a miner must do is identify himself or herself. This is important because people react differently based on who gives them information. • Where: Giving or finding out the location of the problem is important. Of the 48 miners interviewed about their escape, only 2 knew where the fire was located. However, this information was known by either the dispatcher or the person who discovered the fire. • What: Miners must tell or ask exactly what is happening. At one mine fire, miners near the phone heard the message to evacuate and went to gather the others on their crew. One worker shouted to a machine operator: "Come on down to the mantrip. We're going out." Because it was close to quitting time, the machine operator thought they were just leaving the section a little early and went through his normal end-of-shift routine, wasting valuable time. After giving or obtaining the three initial pieces of critical information, miners can then give or obtain details about the response in progress. • Miners: Is anyone hurt? Has everyone been accounted for? When and where was a missing person last seen?

For the total mine plan, a minimum daily production rate is set along with a minimum feed grade to the mill. A maximum daily development capacity is set based on the equipment and labour available. Proven and probable ore is mined preferentially over possible ore in the early years of the plan. Also, the fixed cost of operating the mine is taken into consideration whenever mining activities take place.Once the linear program is solved, it can be critically reviewed, and unrealistic results can be identified. Some resource allocations constraints can then be changed in certain sectors, and new results can be analyzed. “Whatif” scenarios can also be examined, such as determining the impact of hiring a contractor to develop a given sector, or dropping an ore zone completely from the plan."

In comparison with shallow foundation, usually higher bearing capacity, smaller average settlement and better stability are the engineering characteristics of pile foundation. Besides, a smaller differential settlement and a lower settlement rate which will converge quickly are more important characteristics. The superstructure of the building with pile foundation may not meet with significant differential settlement. In this paper, settlement records and other data of different kinds of buildings are chosen to illustrate the characteristics of pile foundation. Moreover, some technical problems in connection with foundation engineering solved in consideration of the above mentioned characteristics of pile foundation are also introduced.

"Le gisement Isle-Dieu est situé sur le flanc sud de l'anticlinal de Galinée. La stratigraphie locale comprend, de bas en haut, la rhyolite du Groupe du Lac Watson surmontée par le basalte du Groupe de Wabassee. Un horizon repère, siliceux et sulfure, d'origine sédimentaire, appelé ""Tuffite Clef', est présent au sommet du Groupe du Lac Watson et pend à 45° vers le sud.Le gisement Isle-Dieu est constitué par une lentille qui recoupe, en partie, la ""Tuffite Clef"". Elle est séparée en deux trorçons par un dyke de tonalite. Les données obtenues à partir des forages effectues à travers la rhyolite sous-jacente permettent de définir les zonations chimiques et pétrographiques de la cheminée d’altération.Ces transformation minéralogiques et chimiques sont caractérisées par un enrichissement en MgO, Fe2O3, MnO et un appauvrissement en CaO, SiO2 et Na2O. La zonation spatiale de ces altérations permet de mettre en évidence la géométrie et l'extension des conduits hydrothermaux. L'épaisseur maximale des sulfures massifs au sein de la lentille est en étroite relation avec l’importance des zones d'altération. Les patrons de variations chimiques dénotent une orientation préférentielle WNW des conduits hydrothermaux. Les parties les plus altérées et les plus déformées présentent localement de fortes variations positives en Zr, Nb, et terres-rares; ces concentrations sont vraisemblablement imputables a /' enrichissement résultant de la diminution du volume lors de l'altération.L'étude pétrographique montre que la porosité et la perméabilité du milieu ont joué un rôle important dans la circulation des fluides car les roches de la cheminée présentent des phénomènes de dévitrification, de bréchification et de microfracturation très prononces. La nature magnésienne de certaines chlorites et la perméabilité accrue du milieu semblent en accord avec le modelé propose par Roberts et Reardon, ( 1978 )"

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is engaged in many diverse programs for improving mine safety. Of particular interest to the Bureau are new and improved means for minimizing the hazard of fire which can be initiated by prolonged low energy electrical faults on trolley line systems. When a high energy fault occurs on a trolley line, wherein the current exceeds the magnitude normally drawn by legitimate loads, such as locomotives, then the circuit breakers at close-by power rectifier sets trip. Tripping of the breakers not only protects the equipment at the rectifier sets, but also disconnects the energy source from the fault and thereby minimizes the fire risk. However, the fault current is frequently of a level substantially below that required to trip the overload breakers. When the fault is a substantial percentage of the set level of the breakers, the energy dissipated by the fault is frequently sufficient to clear the system by rapidly burning itself clear. Such a fault is often short-lived and does not present as serious a fire risk hazard as a prolonged, much lower energy fault, wherein the energy level is too low to clear the system. The breakdown of a trolley line insulator, in which there was a 20 or 30 ampere leak, would represent such a fault or illegitimate load and a substantial fire risk.

This paper, describing the concentrator practice of the Moctezuma Copper Co., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The Nacozari concentrator of the Moctezuma Copper Co. (the Mexican subsidiary of the Phelps Dodge Corporation) is located about 75 miles south of Douglas, Ariz., in the Moctezuma District of the State of Sonora. Nacozari is the southern terminus of the Nacozari Railroad, ever which all concentrate is transported to Douglas for smelting.

This paper describes support of excavation (SOE) design and construction for three large diameter shafts excavated through glacial soil and controlled blasting in complex sedimentary rock formations. SOE in soil consists of unreinforced secant pile rings designed to resist lateral pressure in circumferential compression, eliminating costly steel core beam reinforcing. Controlled blasting at the shafts, adits, and tunnels in densely populated neighborhoods requires managing risks to the public, buildings, and utilities. Controlled blasting approaches limited adverse impacts to receptors nearby while achieving adequate production and fragmentation. A site-specific observational approach was used to adjust blasting parameters, limiting the impact on local stakeholders while maintaining daily progress and managing overbreak.
