P. Mousset-Jones I found the article most interesting and timely. I consider it imperative that mine case studies like this one are undertaken and published so that the practicing mining engineer and geologist can obtain a better idea of what is the preferred estimation and grade control technique to use, given the site-specific geology, grade distribution, etc. Mining companies, with operating gold mines, need to be encouraged to either initiate such a study in-house or support a research project by financing a graduate student at a local university. The latter method is preferable since it not only provides research support but also an excellent training opportunity for young mining engineers and geologists. Ideally, what is needed is exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and mine production data that can then be used to assess the efficiency of different estimation and grade control methods by comparing the results obtained using the drill/blasthole data with the actual production data. It is hoped that more mining companies will realize that the rewards from this kind of research greatly outweigh the sometimes perceived problem with releasing data to a university. I noticed that the authors used the blasthole data to represent the actual values, the validity of which relies heavily on the two key assumptions with regards to blasthole assays and in-pit ore-waste selection procedures. Could the authors comment in more detail on these assumptions and what criteria they used to check the validity of the assumptions? Since the article was published, have the authors had the opportunity to compare their estimates with the actual production data? It would be interesting to compare other estimation methods with OK and IK. For example, how well did the polygonal method used at the mine compare with the results given in the paper? I would like to mention that B.L. Kwa completed a similar study (Kwa and Mousset-Jones, 1986) using exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and production data from the Alligator Ridge mine in Nevada. The study compared a variety of estimation methods, including IK, and the final results are shown in Fig. 1. The IK method exhibits the smallest difference between estimated and production results and is closely followed by the indicator moving window (Ind MW) method. Reply by Y.C. Kim We do concur with Professor Mousset-Jones with respect to the merit of such case studies performed at a local university. In answer to his request for comment on the validity of the two key assumptions made in our paper, we can only say that these are reasonable assumptions that are very difficult to validate. The assumption of blasthole assays being accurate can be partially validated by a careful analysis of the nugget component of blasthole variograms. The assumption that the in-pit ore-waste selection procedure in use was an effective one can only be validated through comparison between the mine estimates of ounces of gold versus the actual recovered ounces of gold at the mill. Neither one of these two assumptions has been validated to date due to several reasons. For example, the mine went through a change in management since the study. Similarly, no compelling reasons have been presented to perform detailed variogram analysis of the blasthole data. We do, however, believe that the obtained results (i.e., indicator kriging performs better than OK in a highly skewed deposit) will remain the same in relative terms, regardless of how valid these two assumptions may be. The most recent comparative study by D. S. Lindsey of the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology also shows a similar ranking between ordinary kriging versus probability kriging, which is an extended version of indicator kriging. A nanocelulose possui grande potencial de inovação e apelo sustentável, podendo ser obtida a partir de três vias principais: processo mecânico, hidrólise ácida e biossíntese bacteriana. Poucos estudos verificaram os avanços tecnológicos, bem como as principais organizações que dominam tecnologias envolvidas nas três vias principais de obtenção. Este estudo objetivou mapear as principais organizações e caracterizá-las conforme o processo de obtenção, mediante indicadores elaborados a partir de registros bibliográficos de documentos de patente indexados na base de dados mundial Derwent Innovations Index. Foi efetuada a mineração de dados para analisar a evolução do patenteamento, os principais titulares e os subdomínios tecnológicos no período de 2002 a 2011. Também foi realizada a mineração do texto contido nos títulos e resumos dos registros bibliográficos para mapear os processos de obtenção de nanocelulose e suas relações com os titulares. Os resultados indicaram o envolvimento de diversas instituições, sobretudo da China, dos EUA, do Japão e da Finlândia, além da característica emergente dos desenvolvimentos tecnológicos de cada processo. Não foram identificados titulares do Brasil, conforme os critérios e as fontes adotadas no estudo. A metodologia empregada mostrou-se útil para a obtenção dos resultados pretendidos e abre espaço para o seu aprimoramento mediante novas pesquisas.

Multilayered ceramic-metal composites were produced by solid state diffusion bonding of polycrystalline alumina and three Al alloys containing 1 to 2%Sr, 2% Mg and Mg + Si (5057 Al alloy), The multilayered structures were fabricated at 610°C under a compressive stress of 3 MPa for 2 hours in He-5%H atmosphere, The ceramic-metal interfaces were studied by SEM and TEM equipped with energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). Addition of 1 wt % Sr to Al promoted good adhesion, without producing any interfacial products, while the Al-2%Sr was poor in this regard due to the presence of dispersed A14Sr which is an intrinsic phase in the Al-Sr phase system, The Al-2%Mg alloy produced a continuous film at the interface, which was characterized to be MgAl2O4. Al alloys containing Mg and Si (5057 commercial alloy) produced not only the spinel structure (MgAl2O4), but another phase rich in Mg and Si (close to Mg2Si), These latter interfacial reaction products were not the intrinsic phases in Al-Mg alloys, and were reaction products at the Al2O3 ?Al alloy interfaces.

The utilization of blast furnace and BOF slags has long traditions and well-known applications in the building and road construction industries and in soil conditioning. The starting point for product development has been the basic physico-chemical properties of slags. This development has led to the almost 100% utilization of blast furnace slags and also considerable amounts of steel slags. While new methods and applications are continuously being looked for and developed in order to recycle and utilize all types of slag, there is at the same time an increasing debate over the exact nature of the slags, whether they are products or waste material, and whether they should be considered substances or preparations. These questions have emerged as a consequence of the environmental effects of the slags and current environmental legislation. The environmental effects of slags can be seen to be both beneficial and less beneficial. There is no doubt about their benefits in the road construction industry, as they allow significant savings in terms of natural materials and in transportation. It is also a known fact that using slags as fertilizers and in the cement industry leads to reduction in CO2emissions. The less favourable effects are the possible harmful emissions into the soil and groundwater. In this paper we describe the properties of slag products and their environmental effects according to investigations carried out in Finland. Deformation Rate Analysis (DRA) and porosimetry have been used to demonstrate the “stress memory” effect in rock and to estimate the vertical in-situ stress in samples of fine-coarse grained sandstone and carbonaceous mudstone. The results of this study indicate that the stresses predicted using both methods are similar to those determined from depth and density of the overburden rocks. The results confirmed that DRA was still applicable even when the core had been sampled 18 months prior to testing. Additionally, the DRA results were modelled using the software PFC2D. A uniaxial test was modelled using the same rock parameters as those observed for the actual core samples. This numerical technique can be used as an aid for DRA results analysis, and can also be used to predict the minimum stress level at which the DRA technique is applicable. The results confirm that any rock mechanics laboratory having standard test equipment could apply the DRA method combined with standard UCS testwork to determine the in-situ stress. Mit der Analyse der Deformationsrate (DRA) und der Anwendung der Porosimetrie wird der Spannungsgedaechtnisseffekts (Stress Memory Effect) im Fels demonstriert, und es werden Abschaetzungen fuer die vertikale in-situ Spannung einer Probe aus mittelgrobem Sandstein und carbonierten Lehmstein getroffen. Die Ergebnisse dieser Untersuchung zeigen, dass die mit Hilfe dieser beiden Methoden ermittelten Spannungen sind vergleichbar. Die Ergebnisse bestaetigen, dass DRA noch anwendbar ist, wenn die Proben schon 18 Monate vor Untersuchungsbeginn gesammelt worden sind. Darueber hinaus wurden die DRA Ergebnisse mit Hilfe des Sofwarepakets PFC modelliert. Ein einaxialer Test wurde mit genau die gleichen Felsparametern, die fuer die eigentliche Probe gelten, modelliert. Diese numerische Methode kann sowohl als eine Unterstuetzung fuer DRA Ergebnisanalyse als auch zur Ermittlung der minimalen Spannung, bei dem die DRA Methode noch anwendbar ist, herangezogen werden. Die Ergebnisse bestaetigen, dass jedes Felsmechaniklabor, das mit den ueblichen Testgeraeten ausgestattet ist, die DRA Methode in Kombination mit dem Standard UCS Testarbeit zur Bestimmung der in-situ Spannungen anwenden kann. L'Analyse du Taux de la difformité (DRA) et les porosimetry ont été utilisés démontrer le " effet de la mémoire " du stress dans roc et estimer le stress dans - situ vertical dans échantillons de grès du grained fin grossier et mudstone carbonifère. Les résultats de cette étude indiquent que les insistances ont prédit utiliser les deux methods est semblable à ceux déterminés de profondeur et densité du surchargez des rocs. Les résultats ont confirmé ce DRA était encore même applicable quand le coeur avait été goûté 18 mois avant tester. En outre, les résultats DRA étaient des modelled qui utilisent le logiciel PFC2D. Une épreuve de l'uniaxial était modelled qui utilise les mêmes paramètres du roc comme ceux observé pour les réels échantillons du coeur. Cette technique numérique peut être utilisée comme une aide pour DRA résulte analyse, et peut aussi être utilisé pour prédire le niveau du stress minimum à que la technique DRA est applicable. In this paper, two types of low-grade complex zinc oxide ores (sandstone and limestone ores) from Yunnan province, China were investigated. A large number of argillaceous and alkaline gangue makes it infeasible to treat the ores with heap leaching. Although wet metallurgy can be considered, the lower efficiency of liquid-solid separation, the high cost, and low revenue limit this technology to be put into practice in large-scale. In order to solve this problem, a new technology combining mineral processing method with metallurgy technique is studied to process this refractory ore that consists of sandstone ore with 5.84 per centZn and limestone ore with 6.50 per centZn. The results of the tests showed that zinc can effectively be recovered from two types of the ores by using the new technology, and the acid consumption can be remarkably reduced. For sandstone sample, 82.96 per cent Zn was recovered by flotation and final Zn recovery by flotation+ hydro-metallurgy can be up to 78.17 per cent from the ore. In addition, for sandstone, acid consumption can be reduced from 270kg/t by direct acid, leaching to 76.92kg/t by flotation + hydrometallurgy combination. For limestone sample, 85.90 per centZn was recovered by flotation and totally 80.95 per cent Zn can be recovered by new technology which is a combination of mineral processing and metallurgy. Besides, H2SO4 consumption can be reduced from 450kg/t for sandstone originally to113.79kg/t after using new technology. One merit of this new process technology is that the zinc sulfides and oxides can be recovered without desliming in the flotation cells at the different stage and make sure the concentrate products as a good feed for hydrometallurgical technology. This study provided pretty good technical support for tapping low-grade refractory zinc oxide ores. The volume of data produced by operating mines has increased substantially over the last 10 years. However, the volume of data and analytical capability has been negatively correlated to equipment productivity for at least the last seven years. In simple terms, as the volume of data has increased equipment performance has declined. Table (2010) tells us that ?The calamity of the information age is that the toxicity of data increases much faster than its benefits?. More data does not guarantee improving productivity; but more data is also not the cause of declining productivity. Similarly, when equipment performance does start to improve, (it must ? there really is no option if mines want to remain competitive), it will not be the data nor analytics which causes it; it will be the people using the resources at their disposal; including the data. Data and analytics can help if the toxicity of the data can be managed. The simplest form of business improvement using data is benchmarking. The objective of benchmarking is to understand and evaluate the current position of a process in relation to ?best practice? and to identify areas and means of performance improvement. The application of benchmarking involves four key steps: (1) Analyze and understand in detail existing processes; (2) Analyze and understand the processes of others; (3) Compare your own performance with that of the others analyzed; and (4) Design and implement the changes necessary to close the performance gap(s). There are however, many in the mining industries who have shunned equipment benchmarking because they believe that, ?every mine is a pilot?. In other words, the differences between mine operations make comparisons between them of little value. This paper will present a valid approach to benchmarking equipment performance and reliability, accounting for the differences and similarities between operations, producing a result which can be used to add value to mines around the world.

In July 1921 , we were assigned by the U. S. Bureau of Mines to an investigation of milling methods in the Tri - State zinc district ( Missouri -Kaneas- Oklahoma district ) . The work has progressed without interruption , and about onehalf of the funds allotted for it has been expended . This preliminary statement abcut the nature of the work and the results so far obtained , has been prepared for the information of the operators , and through their assistance to insure the greatest possible progress during the remainder of the work . A general survey of the district was made , and many of the mining companies cordially offered the facilities of their plants for the investigation . The work was finally centralized at the plant of the 0. M. Bilharz Mining Co. Its manager , F. H. Gartung, and his successor , O. W. Bilharz , have been especially helpful , also the millmen at this plant and elsewhere have rendered assistance without which the work could not have advanced . The Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy , Rolla, Mo. , and the Miami School of Mines , Miami , Okla . , have given hearty cooperation . The Webb City Iron Works and the Joplin Supply Co. donated some necessary apparatus .

Talc has been the focus of recent civil litigation based on claims that asbestos minerals exist in talc deposits and therefore have caused asbestos-related diseases in those who have regularly used talc products. Such litigation, and ensuing confusion over the petrology and asbestos content of these deposits, challenges the talc mining industry in Montana and elsewhere in the world. The talc deposits in southwest Montana were formed by hydrothermal alteration of dolomitic marbles and are still actively mined. In general, talc formed by hydrothermal alteration of preexisting carbonate rocks is known to be nearly monomineralic and lacking in amphiboles. This paper includes data from analyses of representative ore samples from this mining region in southwest Montana. The results conclude that the presence of asbestos minerals — both amphiboles and chrysotile — is unlikely and that the ores are nearly monomineralic, as expected. Samples were characterized using a suite of analytical methods, namely, powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and electron microprobe analyses, which allowed us to determine the minerals present and the formation process. Our data and interpretations suggest that previous identification of asbestos minerals in these deposits is not accurate.

ABSTRACT Inco’s Iron Ore Recovery Plant was operated by Inco from 1955 to 1980 near Sudbury, Ontario. As exposures to specific nickel substances have been associated with adverse respiratory endpoints it is important to understand processes giving rise to such substances. This manuscript discusses the process and equipment, the propensity for aerosol formation, and operational procedures used by Inco in roasting a pyrrhotite concentrate, reducing the nickel in the formed oxide, leaching the nickel in ammoniacal solution, purifying the resulting solution, making green or black NiO, and producing iron oxide pellets. Industrial hygiene measurements are also reported.

The disposal of end-of-life electronics is an issue receiving increasing scrutiny. This paper evaluates several alternatives for recycling cathode ray tubes (CRTs) within monitors and televisions. The primary recycling options for the glass, reuse in new CRTs or as a smelter flux, are examined from economic and environmental standpoints. The economics are modeled using a cost model that includes dependencies on processing costs, transportation logistics, and incoming material composition. The environmental consequences are modeled using life cycle assessment methodologies to determine the energy embodied in each processing alternative. Results map out preferred processing alternatives across a range of technological and operational conditions. The results indicate that economic costs and environmental consequences are heavily impacted by transportation. The preferred destination of CRT glass for a recycler is highly dependent on the proximity of the consumer to the recycler, although it is generally economically advantageous for the recycler to extensively dismantle the CRTs.

The use of valuable minerals is a necessity to maintain a modern society. Not only the iron, aluminium, coal and oil that are used in large quantities, but also the uranium, copper, vanadium, tungsten, antimony and many others play an essential role in the bigger picture of our modern civilisation. Minerals occur in a form and in places determined by a long history starting at the dawn of creation. Over billions of years the elements have combined in wondrous combinations and structures. They have been broken up by massive explosions, movements in the earth's crust and erosion by wind and water. They have been restructured and recreated in even more configurations by the application of heat and pressure, leached by and exposed to new chemical compounds. The result is that most valuable minerals are found in impure form and mixed up with other, less useful waste material. 2. Mineral Beneficiation The processes used for the purification and enhancement of an ore, to satisfy the needs of downstream applications, are collectively referred to as mineral beneficiation. Mineral Beneficiation starts in the mine where only that portion of the ore, that can be economically processed, is selectively extracted. It may also include ore blending, to ensure a more consistent feed to the following stage of valuable mineral recovery. The next stage in mineral beneficiation is the liberation of the valuable minerals from the gangue. This is achieved by blasting, crushing, milling and grinding down to an adequately fine grain size to facilitate good separation. Separation can be achieved by a variety of different techniques. ?Screening coarse from fine particles is an easy method if the valuable mineral is dominant in a certain screen fraction. ?Magnetic separators can differentiate minerals on the basis of their difference in magnetic susceptibility. ? Electrostatic separators differentiate on the basis of electrical conductivity. ? The differences in density are exploited in spirals and jigs. ? Particular surface properties provide a separation technique in flotation. ?The selective sorption properties of a collector medium are another option.

The rapidly increasing use of motor vehicles in the United States has introduced an entirely new problem in the proper ventilation oftunnels , subways , and other confined spaces through which such machines must pass . This problem was brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines by the New York and New Jersey State Bridge and Tunnel Commissions with reference to the ventilation of the proposed vehicular tunnel under the Hudson River . This tunnel , consisting of twin tubes 29 feet in diameter and 8500 feet long between entrance and exit , presented an unprecedented problem in ventilation both on account of its length and on account of the traffic density , which is expected to reach a maximum of 1900 vehicles per hour . An exhaustive study by the tunnel engineers of all available data on the amount and composition of automobile exhaust gas disclosed very little information on the percentage of carbon monoxide in motor exhaust gas from the average run of automobiles and trucks under actual operating conditions on the road. It was well known that carburetor adjustment and other operating factors changed the percentage of the poisonous constituent , carbon monoxide , from practically 0 to 12 or 13 per cent ; but no safe estimate could be made of the most probable figure without further investigation .

The Pike River Coal Company is set to develop the Pike River Coal Mine in the Paparoa Ranges of New ZealandÆs South Island. The mine will be developed to extract a coking coal deposit of the Brunner Seam, some 46 km north-east of Greymouth, using a combination of continuous miners and hydraulic extraction.   The mining area is located within Department of Conservation (DOC) land and is adjacent to the escarpment of the Paparoa Range and the Paparoa National Park. As such, the major restriction to planned extraction is protection of:   +        the western escarpment, +        vertical and sub-vertical rock faces, +        permanent water courses, +        significant vegetation, and +        steep slopes.   The mine will use its elevation advantage to hydraulically flume coal from the working faces to the pit bottom area where it will be slurried to approximately 35 per cent density of solids and pumps down a slurry line to the coal prep plant some 10.5 km down the Pike River Valley. The coal will be sold on the export market as a high quality coking coal for international steel making.

The Greenland Group, Westland, can be characterised with respect to environmental issues by the application of a GIS database (DAME), and specific sampling campaigns. Waters draining gold mineralised areas have a distinctive chemistry characterised by neutral pH and arsenic as a trace element. The acid neutralising capacity (ANC) from carbonates usually exceeds the maximum potential acidity (MPA) from sulphides resulting in circum-neutral pH. These waters are readily distinguishable from waters draining coal mine related areas, which commonly have low pH (~4) and low As concentrations (~0.1 ppm). In contrast, dissolved arsenic mobilised from Greenland Group historic gold mining areas is up to 2.4 ppm. This As mobilisation is controlled by the secondary As mineral, scorodite (FeAsO2+2H2O). Maximum dissolved As concentrations increase with increasing pH, corresponding to the increasing solubility of scorodite with increasing pH. Dissolved As is attenuated by dilution, precipitation of scorodite, and/or adsorption to iron oxyhydroxide (HFO). Adsorption to HFO is an important attenuation mechanism in and adjacent to many mine sites. HFO is abundant at mine sites where pyrite was abundant in fresh rock, such as where the mineralised zone is dominated by disseminated pyrite. Pyrite, and resulting HFO, are relatively rare where mineralisation occurred as well-defined quartz veins. Localised HFO occurs also where ankerite oxidises in host rocks. Arsenic output flux (ca. 25 g/day) from historic gold mine sites is commonly less than the natural background flux from mineralised rocks (>5000 g/day).

Currently an Australian Standard for tunnel fire safety is being developed for road and rail tunnels. Other local guidance relating to tunnel fire safety that has recently become available includes publications by both the Roads and Traffic Authority and RailCorp of New South Wales. Internationally, the World Road Congress has completed its 2004 - 2007 cycle, which has resulted in a number of publications. International developments in rail guidance include a new European Standard regarding fire safety in railway tunnels that will come into effect in July 2008. In addition, the National Fire Protection Association committee NFPA 130 are in the process of revising their standard for fixed guideway transit and passenger rail systems, which is due for publication in late 2009. This paper outlines the status of these and other recently published relevant local and international fire safety guidelines and their implications for tunnel projects in Australia.

Some literatures discussed on how to recycle the various reagent, but the discussion on how to reuse the waste liquid directly is very little. How to reuse the waste liquid directly was researched in this paper. Firstly, the waste liquid should be filtrated to remove the impurity; then some quantity of H2O2 solution was dripped into the waste liquid to pretreat it; finally, CuSO4solution was added into the treated waste liquid and the pH was adjusted to about 12, then some HCHO solution was added into the waste liquid, in which the treated carbon fiber can be plated. The morphology and composition of coatings were investigated by means of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), the deposition rate was mensurated by the way of dissolution. The results indicated that, the plating effect was basically identical with new plating solution, and the solution is stable, and the plating rate is still about 0.8µm/h, and the copper coating is even and combines closely with carbon fiber. According to this way, the waste liquid can be reuse 5~7 times.

"PURPOSE OF REPORTMany bituminous coal-mine officials realize that coal dust presents an ever-present coal-mine explosion hazard, and that persons forced to breathe large quantities of it may be more subject to respiratory infection than persons working in less dusty atmospheres. As an outgrowth of the realization that coal dust should be allayed at its source, many mining companies have expressed the desire to install dust-allaying equipment, and in a number of mines, water or wetting solution is being applied on the cutter bars of mining machines, on mobile loaders, belts or conveyors underground, and tops of mine cars. Spraying equipment also has been installed on dumps to allay dust during dumping operations. Dust-allaying equipment has not been standardized, however, because manufacturers have found that many prospective purchasers of such equipment have different ideas. These manufacturers wish to standardize, so far as feasible, the types and placement of such equipment. Many mine officials, although interested, do not know the best or most effective methods for allaying dust.For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has advocated allaying dust by applying water or, more recently, water modified by a wetting agent on the cutter bar of mining machines and by applying water to loaded and empty mine cars in order to keep as much dust as possible from spilling onto the haulage roads. In recent years this Bureau has also advocated applying water with or without a wetting agent during mechanical loading of coal and during unloading of coal from trackless cars or buggies and from elevating conveyors. It has now become apparent that specific arrangement of pipes, hose, and nozzles should be standardized to at least some extent. It is the purpose of this report, therefore, to give in detail suggested arrangement of dust-allaying equipment in the hope that both manufacturers and mine officials will have available dust-allaying equipment with maximum efficiency to do the desired work."

This paper is the first part of a report giving the results of the Bureau of Mines' twenty-third semiannual survey of motor gasoline marketed in the United States. A companion report, Part II, is in preparation and will give a more detailed discussion of the whole survey. Results of the determination of copper-strip corrosion, color, sulphur content, copper-dish evaporation residue, and gum content as given by the Bureau of Mines steam-oven method will be presented in the second paper, which will also include the prevailing retail price and the tax at the time the sample was taken. This paper deals specifically with data relative to gravity, Reid vapor pressure,5 and distillation (method 100.13).6 The samples tested were divided into "competitive-price gasolines" and "premium-price motor fuels," a method of presentation that was begun with the twenty-second semiannual survey.7 A total of 312 samples were collected from service station pumps in 20 cities throughout the United States. Of this number of samples, 207 were "competitive-price gasolines" and 105 were "premium-price motor fuels." All of the samples were collected in March, 1931, and analyzed at the Petroleum Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Miner at Bartlesville, Okla.
