Two ""mining booms"", 1922 to 1945 and 1955 to 1965, account for 72% of the mines identified to date.Most exploitable orebodies have been found near the surface: 90 %have their top between 0 and 100 meters, including 70% between 0 and 10 meters. Early discoveries were made by prospecting, followed by geophysics while the progressive development of the depth potential is being realized by a combination of methods. Approximately 80 %of the metal extracted comes from four mining camps which cover 8% of the area, but most of the production can be allributed to only a few large deposits. Based on these data, a new approach to the analysis of a mining region is proposed:1) The distribution showing deposit depth versus time is indicative of the maturity of a mining camp and can serve to evaluate its remaining potential.2) The ""S"" curve analysis can be used to extrapolate the success rate of a specific exploration method and also stresses the crucial role of innovation in exploration."

The purpose of this review is to raise awareness about e-waste problem in the World. Whether generated at our home or our office, e-waste is most rapidly growing waste problem in the world. Even though there are conventional disposal methods (such as landfill and incineration) for e-waste, these methods have both economic and environmental disadvantages; recycling is a new waste management option which diverts end-of-life (EOL) electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) from landfill and incineration [1, 2]. Successful diversion strategy must be based on economic sustainability, technical feasibility and social support [3]. Recycling infrastructure includes transportation, collection, recovery and resale establishments. The first part of this paper describes the e-waste facts, how big is the e-waste problem and existing recycling programmes and collecting methods in the USA and EU; second part, describes various methods available to recover valuable materials (glass, plastic and metals (Pb, Cu, Al, Steel, Ni, Au, Pd, Cu etc)) in e-waste for a safe and environmental friendly disposal

The corrosion resistance of stainless steels can be strongly affected by surface treatments. Changes in corrosion resistance can relate to surface composition, integrity and stability of the passive film, and to surface profile (roughness). Operations producing oxidation at the surface, such as annealing, heat treating, and welding, can result in a chromium-rich scale and a chromium-depleted metal surface. In order to restore full corrosion resistance, chemical or mechanical clean-up techniques must remove not only the oxide, but also a very thin layer of metal. Laboratory and field test studies show that these factors are particularly significant in less highly alloyed steels. Annealing stainless in a reducing atmosphere (bright annealing) avoids chromium depletion, but as-bright-annealed material does not display optimum corrosion resistance in certain environments. Electro passiva-tion can be applied to improve pitting resistance without significantly changing bright surface appearance. Potentiometric studies show that electropassivated material also displays significantly greater resistance to breakdown of passivity in acid solutions. The application of special surface finishes for appearance purposes can affect corrosion resistance. Roughness is a key factor. Samples of related appearance but with different surface profiles can show significant differences in corrosion resistance. Thus nonreflec-tive stainless with a relatively smooth surface produced by a special rolling process is much superior to material chemically etched to a similar low reflectivity. THE corrosion resistance of a stainless steel is affected by other factors in addition to its bulk composition and metallurgical structure. These other factors include those relating to the specific chemical and physical condition of the steel's surface. This paper will consider certain aspects of surface condition in relation to corrosion resistance. In particular, studies will be described on the effects of oxidation encountered in heat treating or welding operations, of passivation after bright annealing, and of different surface finishes. EFFECTS DUE TO OXIDATION When stainless steels are exposed to high temperature in an oxidizing environment, as in annealing or welding, the oxides formed are relatively rich in chromium. As a consequence of oxidation, the metallic layer directly beneath the scale may be low in chromium to some very thin but finite depth.1"8 Such a change in chromium content could lower the corrosion resistance at the surface, whether or not the oxide layer is removed. Studies were performed relating to the effect of oxidation and chromium depletion produced during annealing and welding on the corrosion resistance of stainless steels. The nominal compositions of steels used in this study and others are given in Table I. A) Annealing Studies on 17 pet Cr Steels. 1) Effects of Pickling Treatments. Studies were performed to investigate the corrosion resistance of air annealed type 430 stainless as a function of the amount of electrolytic pickling after annealing. The material used in this study had been air annealed and electrolytically pickled in the mill. All scale had been removed, and yet the material showed unusually poor corrosion resistance. Laboratory electrolytic pickling studies were performed to determine whether additional metal removal from the surface would improve corrosion resistance. Electrolytic pickling was performed in a sulfuric acid bath using various conditions of bath acidity, temperature, time, and current density. The samples were then rated for corrosion resistance in a ferric chloride spot test. For this spot test, a solution was prepared by dissolving 10 g of FeCl3 . 6H2O, 5 g of NaCl, and 2.5 ml of concentrated HC1 in 200 ml of water. An area on a specimen was cleaned and a drop of test solution was placed on the prepared area. After 5 min, the drop was rinsed off and the area wiped dry. The spot was then rated between 1 and 5 by visual comparison with standard spots. The numerical rating of the standard spots can be described as follows: 1—No clouding of surface; 2—very slight clouding of surface; 3—slight clouding of surface; 4—moderate clouding of surface; 5—strong clouding of surface. A rating of 1 or 2 was considered to have passed the test, a rating of 4 or 5 represented failure, and a rating of 3 was considered borderline. The severity of etching in this test has been related to the actual chromium content at the surface.4 Etching (clouding) occurs on type 430 stainless (rating of 4 to 5) when the surface chromium content is 14 pct or less. The effects of current density and retention time when electrolytically repickling this material in 6 pct sulfuric acid are shown in Fig. 1. Increasing the cur-rent density or retention time improved corrosion resistance as measured by the spot test. Similarly, increasing acid concentration of the bath or bath tem-perature was found to improve corrosion resistance. The conditions making for improved spot ratings resulted in increased metal removal, regardless of specific pickling conditions used, Fig. 2.

Hydro-Jex® is a new enhanced method for heap leach treatment with significantly higher mineral recovery. In this case study at the Los Filos Mine in Mexico, the Hydro-Jex operation is evaluated for heap leach stability. This is pursued by numerical modeling of the heap leach pad stability and well monitoring of the phreatic surface before and after the Hydro-Jex operation. Experimental and numerical results both indicate an improvement in mineral processing under the influence of Hydro-Jex. Numerical results show an insignificant decrease and a significant increase in stability during and after Hydro-Jex injection application, respectively. The integrity of the liner is maintained in both cases. The zonal injection pressure, operationally below the overburden pressure, is found to be negligible compared with the dimensionality of the heap, and stability of the structure is not exposed to any significant risk, even up to 25%above overburden pressure. Furthermore, heap leach factor of safety increases after Hydro-Jex application. This is attributed to breakdown of the water solution build-up and thus a decrease in the phreatic surface depth below the top of the pad. It is suggested that injection wells be drilled, based on thorough geophysical data, in locations where overcompaction of heap material results in water solution build-up and pore pressure enhancement. Compared with traditional heap leaching, the Hydro-Jex technique not only expedites mineral processing by increasing chemical kinetics extraction but also increases the stability of the heap by unclogging drains.

This discussion is concerned with those com-J- paratively infrequent bumps that eject material from the failed mass with enough energy to wreck heavy machinery and seriously injure or kill people. In such cases there is a loud report, and the pressure waves set up in the mine atmosphere wreck ventilation controls several hundred feet from the site of the failure. Vibrations are induced in the earth's crust which may be detected several miles from the point of origin, and explosive gases may be released in large quantities." Usually a dense suspension of dust is produced from the failed mass, together with dust placed in suspension by the resulting air blast. These rock bursts or bumps have also been called mountain shots, bounces, pillar bursts, and crumps. Such occurrences, when extensive, are serious catastrophes, and may force abandonment of the mine.' CAUSES OF ROCK BURSTS Rock bursts in coal mines have occurred in sev-eral places under diverse geological conditions, mining methods, and/or practices. A study of many such occurrences indicates that they depend on the following conditions: 1) cover thickness of 500 ft or more, 2) cover composed of strong members and having a strong member lying close to or on the coal bed, and 3) a floor that does not readily heave. The minimum thickness of cover under which coal mine rock bursts occur is based on observation. Under unusual circumstances involving very strong roof members and/or mining systems, and/or practices especially likely to induce bursts, a burst conceivably could occur under less roof. Under special circumstances rock bursts have occurred in marble quarries almost at the surface.' Furthermore, under very heavy cover it is likely that controlling roof members need not be as strong and as close to the coal bed to cause bumps. Just what constitutes a strong roof or roof member is open to question. Obviously the strength of a roof member is determined by its thickness, the distance between bedding planes across which little or no bond exists, the spacing and development of joints, and the inherent strength of the rock material. Strata sections showing roofs under which rock bursts in coal mines have developed are illustrated in Fig. 2. In several instances the strength of rocks composing the roof of mines developing bumps has been tested. The tests (Table I) show that these rocks develop considerable strength in compression, bending, and shear and that in some cases the strengths are very high. No quantitative data are available concerning joints in roof members over coal beds where rock bursts have occurred, but the author has examined many mines subject to bursts and has received the impression that joints in the shales immediately over the coal beds are always present and well developed. In the main sandstone or conglomerate members themselves, however, where observed, he has yet to see a fracture system indicating well developed joints. Undoubtedly joints are present, but the evidence indicates that they are few, poorly developed, and widely spaced. In a mine subject to bumps, moreover, actual measurements of roof spans up to 225 ft between supports under a cover of about 800 ft have been made before roof failure occurred. Such spans signify strong roof. In coal beds subject to rock bursts, the bottom rock is usually a sandy shale. A few tests (Table I) have been made on the floor rock of coal beds. Observations in mines indicate that they are usually weaker than roof rocks and that under load they show more plastic effects. Observation in ground subject to bursts invariably indicates a relatively strong floor highly resistant to heaving, although some heaving may occur. Other factors listed as favorable to rock bursts are: 1) mountainous surface; 2) steeply dipping beds; 3) proximity of faults, folds, and other similar geologic structures. Many bursts have occurred in mines under mountainous country, although many bursts in mines under a surface with little relief indicate that thickness of cover, not relief, is the essential factor. In steeply dipping beds, many bursts occur in mines that are essentially flat, and rock bursts have been recorded in beds dipping as much as 35o Most rock bursts in the U. S. occur in beds that dip less than 10 pct. It is also true that most U. S. coal is produced from beds dipping less than 10 pct. Geologically, faults are regarded as providing stress relief, but in the vicinity of faults, as well as sharp folds, it would seem that residual stresses could be present. The fact that rock bursts occur in areas remote from faults and sharp folds suggests that their presence is not necessary for this phenomenon to take place. There have been many bursts close to faults and folds, and it may be assumed that occasionally such structures accentuate their occurrence3 The conditions and circumstances under which they occur, coupled with the effects produced, leave In the Crowsnest Pass coalfield, British Columbia, a rock burst is estimated to have released 1.8 million cu ft of methane.

The new Cooper River Bridge will replace two existing bridges along U.S. Highway 17. The cable-stayed bridge will be one of the largest in the U.S and will connect the City of Charleston and the town of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. The 1,546-foot long main span over Cooper River is supported by two diamond-shaped towers and will allow for 1000-foot wide navigation channel. The Charleston high-level approach is approximately 4351-foot long and will provide 250-foot wide navigation channel over Town Creek, while the Mount Pleasant high-level approach is 2090-foot long. Due to the high seismicity in the region, potential vessel impact, and hurricanes, large lateral loads are expected. Among various types of foundations, 10-foot diameter drilled shafts were selected for their high capacity against lateral loading. The shafts are founded on a stiff to very stiff lightly cemented calcareous sandy clay or sandy silt layer, called Cooper Marl, which underlies coastal sediments of interbedded clays and sands. The main towers will be supported on a group of 11 shafts and protected from ship collision by a rock island. The High Level Approach piers will be supported on a pair of 2 shafts. The shaft tip elevation is up to 230 feet below water line. An elaborate geotechnical investigation has been conducted on the site including a load test program on full-scale shafts under axial and lateral loads. The results of the tests were used to calibrate the lateral and axial soil resistance. The objective of this paper is to present the different aspects of the bridge foundation design.

The oxo reaction consists of catalytic conversion of olefins by reacting the olefins with CO and H2 (water gas) to aldehydes that contain one more carbon atom than the starting olefin. The aldehydes are then generally reduced with hydrogen to primary alcohols in a second stage. The two-stage process is called the oxo process. The word "oxo" is derived from the German "oxierung" (ketonization); thus the exact English equivalent of "oxo" is "keto". The oxo process may be applied to nearly all olefins. A wide range of pressures and temperatures may be used in both stages. The pressure range usually employed is 150 to 200 atmosheres. The temperature in the first stage is usually about 140° C. and in the second or hydrogenation stage about 180° C. Although a standard Fischer-Tropsch catalyst may be used for both steps, cheaper catalysts have been utilized to effect hydrogenation of the aldehydes. Most of the information for this, report on the oxo process was gathered from Technical Oil Mission microfilms. T.O.M. Reels 14, 55, and 134 were especially valuable. T.O.M. Report 6 by H. M. Weir was very helpful. Information on the oxo process is scattered throughout documents captured in enemy territory, and the present report does not include all the available data. Some of the information was procured by personal interview. Where, in the body of this report, certain investigators are quoted, the source of the statement is either personal interview or the T.O.M. reports.

The ability to track miners and communicate with them while they work in underground coal mines is important during normal daily operations, and critical in emergency conditions. As was evident during recent incidents at underground coal mines worldwide, communication with miners and the knowledge of their location is of great importance for rescue efforts and the preservation of life. Numerous technologies have been developed, adapted, and deployed to meet tracking requirements of the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response (MINER) Act. Evaluating the performance of these systems has proven to be difficult for mine operators, system manufacturers, and regulatory agencies. The MINER Act of 2006 requires operators to improve accident preparedness by developing an emergency response plan specific to each mine. With the recent implementation of the provisions of the MINER Act of 2006, all underground coal mines in the United States are subject to the mandates of legislation concerning communication and tracking system installation. As of June 2011, 203 new or revised tracking and/or communication systems had been approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), with nearly 50 other systems or revisions in the approval process (MSHA, 2011). At that time, the available approved systems for underground coal mine use included these types: ? Leaky Feeder Communication Systems ? Fixed Node-Based Communications and/or Tracking Systems ? Wireless Node-Based Communications and/or Tracking Systems ? Medium Frequency (MF) Communication Systems ? Communication System Peripherals Other types of tracking systems have since been developed and some manufacturers are seeking approval for use in this application. Some of the new products include Through-the-Earth (TTE) systems and various radio frequency (RF) adaptations. New technologies that are currently being developed and deployed in other industrial applications should also be considered, including acoustical, optical, inertial, and hybrid technologies To date, no uniform method has been employed in the industry to effectively compare and evaluate the performance of installed systems. Neither industry operators nor regulatory agencies can accurately assess the capabilities of installed systems in the continuously changing mine environment. There is need for a uniform evaluation method that provides the ability to assess how different systems and technologies perform in various mining applications, and whether they can satisfy the regulatory requirements.

"A heuristic model was developed to simultaneously generate the ultimate pit and production scheduling at a mining project. The method consists of a preprocessing step to select a starter pit, the implementation of a genetic algorithm to optimize the pit and schedule of the starter pit, and a network-flow algorithm–based postprocessing operation to finalize the ultimate pit and production scheduling. Applied to an iron ore mine, the model pit and schedule produced a net present value 21% higher than the reference pit and schedule prepared by experienced field engineers.RÉSUMÉ Un modele heuristique a ete developpe pour generer simultanement l’ordonnancement de la fosse finale et de la production dans le cadre d’un projet minier. Cette methode comprend une etape de pretraitement visant a selectionner une premiere fosse, la mise en oeuvre d’un algorithme genetique pour optimiser la fosse et le calendrier d’execution de cette premiere fosse, ainsi qu’une operation de posttraitement basee sur des algorithmes de flux reseaux pour finaliser l’ordonnancement de la fosse finale et de la production. En l’appliquant a une exploitation de minerai de fer, ce modele de fosse et d’ordonnancement a genere une valeur actualisee nette (VAN) superieure de 21 % a l’approche de reference pour la fosse et l’ordonnancement developpee par des ingenieurs de chantier chevronnes. INTRODUCTIONLong-term planning for an open-pit mine involves two important activities: developing the ultimate pit and determining the optimum production schedule. To accomplish this, an ore deposit is discretized into a number of smallsized elements called blocks, which are presented in a 3D block model structure. Because of economic and slope criteria, only a certain set of mining blocks can be extracted from the deposit constituting a pit. During mining, these blocks must be extracted in a specific sequence known as the production schedule."

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Fuel Research (CFR) Com¬mittee of the Coordinating Research Council (CFC) 3/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 4/ Further re¬ports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941.4/ No reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of l941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. The present report presents analytical data for 3,011 samples, representing the products of 113 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during July and August 1946. As in previous surveys the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows: Regular-price, 1,585 samples, 311 items, and 99 -brands; premium-price, 1,422 samples, 280 items, and 94 brands; third-grade, 4 samples, 4 items, and 4 brands. Early identification of adverse geologic conditions and high stress concentrations during the high-speed extraction of coal using modern mechanized longwall systems is a major challenge facing the mining industry. Often, unexpected geologic anomalies that affect rock mass quality are encountered more rapidly, leaving the mine operator with insufficient time or information to deal with the changing ground conditions. The RockVision3D™ seismic tomographic system, developed by NSA Engineering, Inc., offers substantial benefits over conventional geologic/stress-detection methods and has been used successfully in coal mines worldwide. Tomographic images, produced economically and in near-real time, are easy to interpret, allowing mine operators to deal with potential hazards on a day-to-day basis.

THE PROBLEM Two and a half years have gone by since the December, 1976 Civil Engineering article on subway costs caused such a furore. What has happened in this interval? Even after discounting the crushing inflation rate, costs are still increasing, and there is no sign of a turndown, even in the rate of increase. Some steps outlined in the article have been taken. In April this year, the first D.O.T.-sponsored Peer Review Group, made up of managers of other transit properties, met in Boston to review MBTA's $500 million Red Line Extension-Northwest for cost effectiveness. While the impact of a review at the end of the design phase, with substantial segments under contract, cannot be as effective as a review early in the design phase, it is nevertheless a start. This first meeting will be followed by a review of Boston's Orange Line relocation, the final design for which is just underway. In the industry at large two facts are evident: 1. We are failing to reduce underground construction costs. 2. Underground construction is in danger of pricing itself out of the market place. It has always been a greater challenge to design a Chevvy than to design a Cadillac, but it is the Chevvy we need today. Much attention has been focussed in the past on engineering design in the narrow sense: areas such as ground loading conditions and concrete design. The Federal Bureau of Mines evaluated the prospects for using geothermal energy to generate electricity for mines in remote areas. Given the development of a geothermal resource for this purpose, the subsidiary uses of space heating and agriculture were then examined to see if other industries might be viable given a cheap source of heat energy. Sites investigated were located in three areas of Alaska: Kobuk in the northwest, Unalaska in the southwest, and Stikine River in the southeast. Each site was relatively close to mineral deposits whose prospects for development would be enhanced with cheap power.

The metallurgical laboratory data developed in this study indicate an improved electrowinning process for producing higher purity cerium ingot. A typical sample of the Reno electrocerium contains 99.9 weight-percent cerium and the following impurities: Total other rare-earth elements, less than 0.04 percent; iron not detected; silicon and aluminum, less than 0.02 percent each; calcium plus magnesium, less than 0.01 percent; carbon, 0.01 percent; oxygen, 0.002 percent; hydrogen, 0.0003 percent; and nitrogen, 0.0015 percent.

Mean boundary migration depended linearly upon creep extension under various conditions. Prolonged annealing or air-casting increased the proportion of immobile boundaries at a given stage of tests. Grain growth during annealing followed a power law. The linking of migration and sliding in creep and models for migration are examined; activation energies are calculated from these models. Segregation of oxygen to boundaries appears to be a controlling factor. THE idea that boundary migration and boundary sliding during creep are linked has often been suggested,'-5 especially when evidence has been obtained for an alternation between the two processes. In simple bicrystals sliding can occur without any migration6 but in more complex bicrystals7 it is observed. McLean' and Couling and Roberts 5 made measurements of both sliding and migration; McLean concluded that there was no linking of the two processes whereas Couling and Roberts supported the idea. McLean' also developed a model for migration during creep and annealing. The present work was initiated as part of a study of the recrystallization of lead during creep9 but has been extended to examine some aspects of the mechanism of migration. MATERIALS AND METHODS Specially refined high-purity lead* was used; the total of impurities, excluding oxygen, was 0.0008 wt pct. Oxygen was removed as far as possible by melting in vacuo, treating at 550" to 600°C with hydrogen and then casting at 450°C under a vacuum of 10-2 mm Hg; the oxygen was then believed to be 0.00005 wt pct. Specimens were made from extruded strip and then annealed at the required temperature in an air oven, controlled to 5 lac. They were then polished in a mixture of acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide. At this stage some specimens were etched to give grain contrast and their grain sizes determined by the intercept method. Migration of boundaries during creep was measured on the surface of polished (not etched) specimens, directly loaded at room temperature (22°C) or 50°C (52"C) to initial stresses of 300 to 700 1b per sq in. Twenty six vacuum-cast hydrogen-reduced specimens were used and, in addition, two specimens were from material air cast after hydrogen reduction ("partial" air cast) and two from air-cast material not treated with hydrogen ("full" air cast). Duplicates were made in the majority of tests. At intervals through the creep tests, specimens were unloaded and the migration measured, normal to the direction of migration at the point of measurement, for each boundary along standard traverses. Usually between 110 to 180 boundaries were measured at each of some twelve stages of the tests. Migration was measured on the projected image (X100) using prism illumination. Fig. 1 illustrates the method of measurement and shows the kind of variation of migration found from boundary to boundary and along particular boundaries. Fig. 2 gives an example of more extensive migration. The mean value of distance migrated was generally reproducible to *10 pct but occasional points gave a scatter of *20 pct. The correctibn applied by McLean8 to allow for the contribution sliding makes to the apparent distance of migration could not be used, for the sliding at most boundaries was too small to measure with the equipment available. The Swiss are building the world’s longest tunnel, the 57-Kilometer (35-mile) long Gotthard Base Tunnel. Lot 252, Tunnel Amsteg: Two Hard Rock Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) crossed hydro-thermally decomposed granite. While the East TBM advanced slowly but steadily, the West one got stuck for five months and had to be recovered by special means and methods. Both TBMs have finished their more than 11-Kilometer (7 miles) long drives successfully. Lot 360, Tunnel Sedrun: For the first time in tunneling, roadway support machines are used through most challenging, squeezing geology. They constantly advance in full face mode for about one Tunnelmeter/24 hours.

This study was a part of two programs: The first, to develop and evaluate high-temperature refractories; the second, to investigate reaction-rate kinetics and phase equilibria in the sinter step of the lime-soda process for the recovery of alumina. High-temperature X-ray diffractometer techniques are to be used extensively in both programs. This paper summarizes developments in the field of high-temperature X-ray diffractometers through 1959, evaluates various furnace designs, and describes briefly the X-ray diffraction facilities of the Federal Bureau of Mines. A more detailed description of the equipment and its calibration is planned in a future paper on thermal expansion and phase inversion of rare-earth oxides.
