Bentonites are clay materials composed principally of minerals in the montmorillonite group. Distinctive physical properties of the montmorillonite minerals are responsible for selected bentonite deposits having become the raw materials source of industrial clay products which are virtually essential to the maintenance of high production standards in the petroleum, foundry, taconite and other basic industries. These versatile materials have no suitable substitutes in either their major applications or in hundreds of speciality products, The economics of the bentonite mining industry follows closely the established pattern of other non-metallic raw materials. Aggressive competition, advanced technologies, progressive marketing techniques, substantial reserves, and vast unmeasured resources insure the continued supply of high quality bentonite to industry at bargain prices. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the geology and economics of bentonite deposits, summarize both major domestic mining districts and foreign deposits, and report significant results of research and development.

To be held from the 9th to 14th April, 1972, in Johannesburg, South Africa. GENERAL INFORMATION The first symposium in the series was staged by the University of Arizona in 1961. Since then Stanford University, Colorado School of Mines, Pennsylvania State University and the Society of Mining Engineers of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers have acted together with the University of Arizona as co-sponsors of the series. The 9th Symposium in 1970 was sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy together with McGill University and Ecole Poly technique in Montreal. The 10th Symposium, the first to be held outside the North American continent, is being organised by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and the South African Council for Automation and Computation) in close collaboration with the previous co-sponsors. OBJECTIVES Mineral ventures increase in scale and complexity. The planning and control of these projects requires more and more sophisticated techniques. The intention of the symposium is to pool and exchange experience and knowledge and also to discuss new and potential developments. The papers presented in the main sessions, which will extend over one week, will together indicate progress which has been made in the successful application of operations research, mathematical, statistical and computer methods in each of the various aspects of operation in the mineral industry. A coherent account will be developed by consideration, in consecutive sessions, of the stages through which mineral prospects evolve in the course of their life. Primary aims are thus to stimulate discussion in depth of previous applications, to highlight current trends and to provide guidelines for future developments. PARTICIPATION The intention is to bring together persons responsible for managing the various operations in the mineral industry and the workers engaged in the development of mathematical and computer methods relevant thereto. SYMPOSIUM TOPICS 1. Market Analysis-demand and supply trends, models of mineral markets, price prediction. 2. Exploration and ore reserve estimation--exploration strategies, choice of drilling and sampling patterns, quantification of geological information, geo-statistical analysis, ore reserve assessment. Storage and retrieval of associated data. 3. Project design and analysis-influence on viability and risk of capitalisation, scale and method of operation, processing, uncertainties in design premises. 4. Planning of operation-planning and scheduling of construction, of development and of depletion of ore reserves. Logistics, rock mechanics and ventilation. 5. Control of operations-financial, production, cost and quality control as applied to both mining and processing. Flow and processing of relevant information. CALL FOR PAPERS An invitation is extended to intending authors to submit a synopsis, in 200 to 300 words, of papers which would develop the themes outlined above. The Programme Sub-Committee will choose, on the basis of these synopses, some 20 to 30 authors who will be invited to submit papers. Selection will be aimed at the provision of a coherent structure. Other authors may be invited to submit short papers either as contributions to the primary papers or for brief discussion in ancillary sessions which will be scheduled to follow on the main sessions. The official language of the symposium will be English. PROCEEDINGS All of the main and ancillary papers together with edited discussion will be published shortly after the symposium in a single volume. TOURS AND VISITS A choice of visits to relevant local undertakings on a day during the course of the symposium will be available to participants. These will include a deep level gold mine. A tour which will include mineral projects of interest and the Kruger National Game Park will be arranged in the week following the symposium. LADIES' PROGRAMME Arrangements will be made for the reception and entertainment of ladies. ACCOMMODATION Accommodation will be available at hotels convenient to the symposium venue. The cost of reasonable hotel accommodation in Johannesburg is in the range R5 to RIO (7 to 14 U.S. dollars) per person per night. All reservations and associated arrangements may be made through agents to be appointed by the organisers in due course. FEES AND COSTS Symposium fees will not exceed R70 (100 U.S. dollars). These will include registration, one copy of the published proceedings, a set of pre-prints of the main papers, teas and lunches during the course of the symposium, and the various official social events as well as the mid-week visits. Accommodation, travel and post-symposium tour charges are not included in this figure. "Abstract- The mineralogy of samples from the Wellgreen Cu-Ni-Pt-Pd deposit, Yukon Territory, is complex and the metals of interest are contained within fme-grained minerais which vary in size and mineral associations from sample to sample.The major Ni carriers are pentlandite and violarite; the major Cu carrier is chalcopyrite. About 700Jo of the major Ni carriers and 78% of the major Cu qmier will be liberated at a grind of 80% -'}f,.7 J.Uil (-500 mesh) for typical low-grade gabbro (West zone, sample No. 1). For typical ""clinopyroxenite"" (West zone, sample No. 2) and typical ""clinopyroxene-rich peridotite"" (East zone, sample No. 3) the liberation would be 71""lo and 65% for Ni, 74% and 60% for Cu, respectively. Fine grinding, however, cannot liberate the Ni contained in silicates and pyrrhotite, estimated to total24.5% for typicallow-grade gabbro (West zone, sample No. 1), 15% for typical ""clinopyroxenite"" (West zone, sample No. 2), and 12% for typical ""clinopyroxene-rich peridotite"" (East zone, sample No. 3).The principal Pt carrier (sperrylite) varies considerably in grain-size between samples and fme grinding, required to liberate the major Ni and Cu carriers, may be counterproductive in samples where sperrylite is relatively coarse-grained, as sorne would then be unrecovered (e.g. sample No. 1). In addition, sperrylite in samples No. 2 and No. 3 is closely associated with magnetite.Palladium occurs in diverse ways. It occurs in the form of several Pd minerais (e.g. sudburyite, testibiopalladite, merenskyite), as a replacement for Ni in several tellurides, antimonides and tel­ lurantimonides (e.g. melonite), or as very low concentrations in pentlandite (up to 34 ppm), chal­ copyrite (up to 9 ppm), and pyrrhotite (up to 5.6 ppm). Palladium minerais and Pd-bearing minerals are strongly associated with chalcopyrite in sample No. 1 and will thus report to a Cu concentrate. However, 22% of the total Pd is in solid solution in pentlandite in this sample and will thus report to the Ni concentrate. In samples No. 2 and No. 3, less Pd occurs in solid solution in pentlandite, and the PGM are distributed mainly among pentlandite, chalcopyrite, and magnetite in sample No. 2, and among pentlandite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and magnetite in sample No. 3. Therefore, the feasibility of magnetic concentration should be investigated for samples like No. 2 and No. 3, in order to improve Pt and Pd recoveries.Rhodium was found to occur as rare hollingworthite, in sparse cobaltite (up to 2.7%) and, as low concentrations in chalcopyrite (to 10 ppm) and pentlandite (to 12 ppm) by proton microprobe. Iridium occurs in hollingworthite (up to 7.8%) and very rarely as the native metal or in an undefmed Re-Ir-Os-Ru alloy. Ruthenium was determined by proton microprobe analyses to occur in pentlandite (up to 13 ppm) and chalcopyrite (up to 10 ppm), in addition to rare laurite and Re alloy."

Numerous problems encountered in the mining of narrow vein deposits challenge the productivity, competitiveness and profitability of many mines. Mechanization of mining operations is one of the most important means to ensure the healthy survival of this mining sector. Vein deposits account for nearly all the world's primary silver production, as well as a significant portion of gold, tin, copper lead and zinc. In North America, narrow vein mining constitutes an important sector of the industry. Operators exploiting such deposits are concerned with the most appropriate mining method and equipment to mine in such a way as to minimize waste rock dilution. Unfortunately, most of the equipment available does not meet the additional geological and economical restrictions typical of narrow vein mining. Thus, mining these deposits is labor intensive and can result in low productivity. Consequently, the profitability of many such mines is reduced. Increased mechanization is one of the solutions to ensure their healthy survival. This paper reviews the state-of-the art in mining equipment with reference to narrow vein mining limitations. Problems encountered Geological conditions and economical factors have a decisive impact on the choice of mining method and equipment. Many ore bodies are relatively small, usually erratically distributed, often less than 2 m (6.5 ft) wide, with dips ranging from 0° to 90°. To make things worse, ore body limits are sometimes difficult to determine and the ground is hard and abrasive.

"Kahama Mining Corporation Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corporation, poured the first dore bar and filtered the first concentrate produced at the Bulyanhulu mine on February 28, 2001. This event marked the completion of the initial development of the Bulyanhulu Mine – Barrick’s first mine located outside of the Americas.Bulyanhulu is a 2,500 tpd underground mine located in the Lake Victoria gold belt of northern Tanzania. Gold is recovered as a gravity concentrate and smelted on site to produce dore bars or collected in copper concentrate that is shipped to offshore smelters. The facilities were constructed to meet Canadian standards. Unit operations include single stage crushing, SAG milling, gravity recovery, flotation, thickening and dewatering. Tailings are converted to paste and returned underground as paste backfill or pumped to the surface tailing site. The surface paste tailing disposal system is believed to be first of its kind in the gold industry. Paste disposal has several advantages over slurry, including lower dam construction costs, reduced water losses, and lower reclamation costs. This paper describes the facilities and discusses the challenges faced during development and construction including logistics, lack of infrastructure, recruiting and training, security, and social issues as well as initial operating results.INTRODUCTIONBarrick Gold Corporation completed the Bulyanhulu mine development in 2001. Capital cost of the project was US$280 million. The mine produced 241,575 ounces from start of milling to year end at a total cash cost of $197 per ounce. Numerous challenges were overcome in the mine’s development due to the general lack of infrastructure in Tanzania and the mine’s location some 1200 km inland by road from the port of Dar es Salaam."

Although mining is an old industry its management is quite a new science, and its complications are now being recognised as demanding expert knowledge in many branches of technical and professional education. Not the least amongst these isaccountancy, for probably its most important problem is "How to control the expenditure." Unlike most businesses a mining company stands almost entirely in the light of a purchaser in the world's markets, and not as a seller, except say for product so the established and perfected systems of modern industries cannot be adopted for mining purposes. For this reason it has been left for late years to consider the matter seriously, and now a number of well-managed concerns have devised costs systems to suit their own requirements.Very little, however, has been published and even that is disjoined and difficult to make use of. Some of the costs systems in vogue, although elaborate and imposing, are not of very great value for keeping check on wasteful expenditure, or for displaying the commercial effect brought about 'by any particular change in practice, or by an addition or alteration to a portion of existing plant.

An attempt has been made to carry out qualitative assessment of mine water discharges from the different mines of West Bokaro Coalfields of Hazaribag district of Jharkhand, India. A total of 33 mine water samples were analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), major cations (Ca, Mg, Na, K), major anions (HCO3, SO4, Cl, NO3), and heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, Ni, Co, As). The hydrochemical data has been evaluated in terms of major ion chemistry, solute acquisition processes and suitability of mine water for domestic, industrial and irrigation uses. The pH of the analyzed mine waters varies from 5.27?8.43 indicating acidic to alkaline nature of the water. The electrical conductivity (EC) values varied from 276 µScm-1 to 1598 µScm-1 for measured samples and spatial differences between the EC values reflects the wide variation in lithology, surface activities and hydrological regime prevailing in the region. The anion chemistry of the analyzed water samples shows the dominance of SO4 and HCO3 with a minor contribution from Cl, NO3 and F. The observed high values of sulphate in the mine water of the area may be attributed to the oxidative weathering of pyrites. On average chloride is contributing 5% of the total anionic balance (TZ-). Fluoride and nitrate have low concentrations and on average contributing <2% the total anions. The cation chemistry indicates that 79% of the samples are Ca>Mg>Na>K, while the 6% belong to Ca>Na>Mg>K and 1% of Ca>Mg>K>Na. Weathering of rock forming minerals and cation exchange processes normally control the levels of these cations. Concentrations of some heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Ni, Cr) are found to be well above the prescribed permissible levels recommended for the drinking water. The water quality assessment for drinking purposes indicates that most of the mine water having high TDS, total hardness (TH) and sulphate concentrations. This suggests that mine water of the study area is not suitable for direct use in drinking and domestic purposes and needs a proper treatment before its utilization. The assessment of water for irrigation uses show that the water is good to permissible quality and can be used for irrigation uses. However, high values of salinity, %Na, SAR, RSC and Mg-hazard at certain sites restrict its suitability for agriculture uses. "Much progress has been made over the last several years in the ability to measure flotation cell hydrodynamic parameters in both the laboratory and plant. These techniques have allowed fundamental research to proceed to determine the effects that frother chemistry has on the main hydrodynamic parameters (gas hold up, bubble size) as well as on the amount of froth generation and water content of froth. A research program was begun that brought together a team consisting of private companies and a University with expertise in hydrodynamic characterization (McGill), flotation reagent applications (Flottec) and chemical synthesis (Sasol N.A.) with the purpose of characterizing frother chemistries with two goals in mind: Determine which frother chemistry can provide optimized cell hydrodynamics; and, create new frother chemistries with specific hydrodynamic properties.This paper describes the key steps that were taken that led to the development of new frother chemistry for use in flotation.The first step was the characterization of the major frother chemical families in a two phase system. The parameters measured were gas hold up, bubble size, froth height and water carrying rate at different concentrations and gas velocities.Analysis of the data indicated that definite patterns existed between frother chemistry and hydrodynamics and showed that frothers could be grouped into classes. More importantly, by modifying known frothers through chemical reaction it was shown that these frothers could be moved from one class to another. As a result of this better understanding of the interdependence of hydrodynamic and chemical properties, a new frother chemistry was proposed that was predicted to perform similarly to MIBC.The new frother was synthesized and hydrodynamic testing confirmed that the chemical performed similar to MIBC. Laboratory flotation tests were conducted on two different ore types that also confirmed the similar performance of the new chemical and MIBC. Subsequently, the new product was placed on a plant for a short period of time. The results showed that the product was an excellent frother but increased the flotation rate slightly more than MIBC at the same addition rate.Further research showed that the new frother chemistry was a family of products. By changing the reaction the resultant products could be made to be slightly weaker or stronger than MIBC but that this chemistry cannot provide hydrodynamic/froth characteristics similar to strong frothers like glycols and glycol ethers. Further work is planned to conduct longer plant trials to confirm the efficacy of this new frother family."

Coal production in the United States in 2010 increased to a level of 960 Mt (1,085.3 million st), according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), an increase of 1 percent, or 9.43 Mt (10.4 million st) above the 2009 level of 975 Mt (1,074.9 million st) (Table 1). In 2010, U.S. coal consumption increased in all sectors except commercial and institutional, while total coal stocks fell slightly for the year. Coal consumption in the electric power sector in 2010 was higher by 4.5 percent, while coking coal consumption increased by 37.9 percent and the other industrial sector increased by 7.1 percent. The commercial and institutional sector, which prior to 2008 had been called the ?residential and commercial? sector and is the smallest of all the coal-consuming sectors, declined by 3.1 percent in 2010. (Note: All percentage change calculations are done at the short tons level.) U.S. coal exports increased from the 2009 levels due mostly to higher demand for metallurgical coal, while coal imports decreased for a third year in a row. The increase in coal consumption for electric generation during the year was the consequence of improving domestic economic conditions further bolstered by a cold winter and warm summer in important coal-consuming regions. Preliminary data show that total generation in the electric power sector (electric utilities and independent power producers, including useful thermal output) in the U.S. increased in 2010 by 4.2 percent. Coal-based generation also increased, resulting in a 38-Mt (42-million st) increase in coal consumed in the electric power sector. Coal use in all the sectors other than the electric power sector increased by 13.9 percent to a level of 65.9 Mt (72.7 million st).

"In early 1988 the decision was made by Noranda Minerals Inc. to install pressure filters at the GECO mill to replace the vacuum disk filters and bunker-C fired rotary kiln dryers. Two filters were installed, one for copper concentrate and one for zinc concentrate. Completion of the project was scheduled for the third quarter of 1989. The filters were made operational in October 1989. Some work remains to be done yet on loadout conveyors for total project completion. Capital expenditures for the project have been approximately $2,700,000 to date. The paper describes the selection criteria for the filter, the installation, startup and associated problems.1. INTRODUCTIONThe filter model chosen for the project was the Verti-Press model VP-50-6(7) (Figures1 ,2 and 3) by Filtra Systems of Farmington Michigan, USA. The decision to purchase the Filtra Systems filter was based on gaining familiarity with a different, mechanically simpler pressure filter than the Larox design and to a lesser extent a necessity for repairs to the the disc filter, rotary kiln dryer system used at the GECO operation for its' copper and zinc concentrates. The fact that it is manufactured in North America was an important consideration. The same basic principles of pressure filtration as the Larox machine are used but the implementation is quite different and somewhat simplified with some interesting innovations. 2 filters were installed to allow direct and immediate comparison of the same machine on both fine and coarse materials. Copper concentrate is reground for cleaning on the flotation circuit while zinc is not. Screen analysis of composited samples of concentrates for 1988 indicated that expected copper concentrate would be approximately 66% minus 400 mesh and zinc 50% minus 400 mesh (Tables 1 & 2).The filter is composed of six horizontal chamber module layered vertically and held together in a frame by 1 O large bolts; torqued down to 4000 ft-lbs. 6 individual belts are used; each with its own drive system. The belts themselves are of a 3 piece design with a filter cloth portion, a support belt and a rubberized intermediate portion. They are held together with steel clipper lacings. A basic description (1) of the filter operation is as follows. ""The horizontal filler chamber is closed by hydraulically pressurizing seals across each end of the filter chamber to 200 psi. The feed pump then pumps slurry into the filter chamber. Suspended solids are retained on the filter belt and the filtered solution drains into a lower drip tray and flows from the filter by gravity. At the end of the filtration or feed cycle, a rubber diaphragm in the filter chamber is pressurized hydraulically to 100 psi pressure. This removes all free liquid from the filter chamber and the filter cake. After the diaphragms are retracted the filter cake is blown with compressed air to remove any residual cake moisture. The seals are then retracted and the belt is advanced to discharge the filter cakes. During the cake discharge the belts are washed with a spray header located at the drive end of the filter. The belt assemblies move one (1) complete revolution during the cake discharge cycle. The cycle automatically repeats until the filter is shut down by the operator."

[The beau of Mines made its first survey of motor gasolines sold throughout the United States in 1915, a second in 1917, and a third in April. 1919. These surveys shored that motor gasoline had become notably less volatile during each two-year interval. In order to ascertain whether this change was continuing, it was planned to institute semi-annual surveys, the first of which teas made in January, 1920. Contrary to expectations based on the previous surveys, the average volatility of the gasoline tested at this time was practically identical with that of the average volatility of the gasoline from the same districts in 1919. The next survey, made in July, 1920, showed a very marked decrease in volatility but as it has long been recognized that the volatility of motor gasoline manufactured for sale during the summer months is loss tan that of gasoline made and sold during the winter, part at least of the change was attributed to this factor. The average boiling point of the samples collected in the present survey is 263 degrees Fahrenheit, as compared with 264 a year ago. This shows that the average gasoline marketed at the present time is fully as volatile as that marketed a year ago. There has been, however, a noticeable change in the character of the product: the initial boiling point and 20 per cant point are lower than a year ago, whereas the 90 per cent and end-points are higher, which indicates a greater proportion of gasolines made by blending casing-head, or natural gas-gasoline, and naphtha.]

Andalusite is an excellent raw material for refractory applications due to its high aluminum oxide content and phase transformation to mullite at high temperature. Granular andalusite in particle sizes of about 1 to 2 mm was traditionally utilized for the manufacturing of refractory brick. However, if powder andalusite in micron particle size is utilized in high-alumina refractory products, reinforcement on the refractory brick can be obtained and the sintering temperature can be decreased. The phase transformation of powder andalusite plays a key role for the difference.

The advent of the more efficient and effective rare-earth roll (RER) separator in the early 1980s began a new era of dry magnetic separation. The RER units quickly became the separator of choice within the materials processing industry. Though RER separators are now commonplace throughout the world, only modest advancements have been made to the original design. This paper details recent, more significant, rare-earth magnetic separation developments. These developments maintain the best features of existing technology while minimizing shortcomings. The discussion includes discerning features that aid in better metallurgical performance. Also discussed are improved mechanical aspects that allow for both easier operation and maintenance. Performance details from various test programs are included.

A large portion of the energy consumed in copper concentrators is used to reduce the particle size of the feed by crushing and grinding. The cost of metal production could be reduced if low-grade particles of cm size were removed prior to further processing. Two copper sulfide ore samples (3 × 1 cm) from Arizona were analyzed by micro X-ray computed tomography (Micro-XCT) to determine the grade of copper sulfide in each particle. For copper ore sample A, a significant number of particles contained very low amounts of copper, while some particles had copper sulfide grains of mm size. Based on Micro-XCT, it was expected that 85% of the copper for sample A could be recovered at 65% of mass rejection during preconcentration by sorting. However, in sample B (a different copper ore), distribution of copper sulfide was dispersed primarily in each ore particle, so for the particle size class of 3 × 1 cm, liberation of copper sulfide and gangue minerals was not significant. In view of the XCT results, dual energy (DE) X-ray radiography was used as a basis for sorting. Previous DE X-ray radiography of a drill core sample demonstrated that this rapid detection method can be used to identify rich or poor Cu-bearing coarse particles. Pilot scale X-ray sorting of sample A (10 × 1 cm) showed 31% rejection of a 0.08% Cu gangue product with a corresponding recovery of 90% copper.

ALTHOUGH brasses and bronzes have been made for ages, a systematic study of their physical properties has been carried out only during the years of the present century. Among these properties may be included those which are to be detected by means of microscopic examination; in other. words by the science of metallography. The earlier workers in this field, both in this country and abroad, gave their attention to steel. When the senior author explored the situation in 1902, there was little encouragement to be found in undertaking the study of the non-ferrous alloys. A start was made, and the metallography of the brasses and bronzes, as well as of the copper-nickel-zinc alloys developed materially under his direction. Annealing experiments were begun in 1902, and in the succeeding years the effect of temperature, and the influence of previous working, on the grain size of brass were studied. The conclusions so well known and widely published today were largely reached during those earlier years. . In 1905 the first complete annealing series were made. By this it is meant that brass and copper sheet, 5 B & S Nos. hard, was machined into tensile test specimens, then annealed under accurate control for 30 min. at temperatures up to the melting point of the material. Various determinations were made, including tensile strength and elongation in 2 in. There rapidly followed similar series on all of the copper-zinc alloys from 100 to 60 per cent. copper, on the bronzes, cupronickels, and on copper-zinc-nickel alloys. At this point there was published by Grard, in October, 1909,1 the very comprehensive and complete work on the tensile properties of cartridge brass, 90-10 copper-zinc, and electrolytic copper. The excellent photomicrographs in that paper illustrated the changes in structure produced by cold rolling as well as by annealing at different temperatures, but where Grard&apos;s work was confined to copper and to two alloys, the investigations in this laboratory have been over the entire fields of the commercial copper-zinc alloys, copper-tin alloys, representative copper-nickel and copper-nickel-zinc alloys as well as aluminum bronzes and others of a more special nature.

"Grade estimation is the cornerstone of longrange mine planning. Pit designs, metal recovery, mining costs, reserves calculations and reporting are all dependent upon a reliable grade model. If the geology is poorly understood or the interpolation methods and parameters have been haphazardly constructed, then massive financial losses will be the inevitable outcome. Therefore, a properly trained geologist must use all of the appropriate tools available including deposit knowledge and advances in modeling technology to construct the most geostatistically and practically sound long-range block model.Certain deposits, such as the sedimenthosted deposits at Tenke-Fungurume, require an interpolation method that best suits the style of mineralization. In 2014, Hexagon Mining developed a tool in MineSight called dynamic unfolding (MSDU) that has the potential to improve upon previous Euclidean-based interpolation methods. MSDU utilizes the nonstationarity of a folded grade trend to more accurately construct variograms and improve interpolation results based upon a modeled three-dimensional surface.Geology overview. The sediment-hosted Tenke-Fungurume mining district is located in the southeastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Fig. 1). The rocks within the district are primarily dolomites and shales from the lower half of the Roan Supergroup that were mineralized by ascending pregnant copper and cobalt rich brines within a massive sedimentary basin (Cailteux et al., 2005) (Fig. 2). These oxidized brines likely found a fluid channel in the porous RSC unit. The surrounding rock units provided a redox boundary for copper and cobalt precipitation along organic rich beds, forming a massive stratabound deposit that was later broken up by several subsequent tectonic events (Dewaele et al., 2006)."

The processes by which particles and bubbles interact capture many of the central concepts of colloid science and hydrodynamics. This area of research embraces hydrodynamics, interfacial(including capillary) forces, particle and bubble behaviour and solution chemistry. In this review, we discuss collision, attachment and stability efficiencies. We deal with the identification of a flotation ?domain?, the deformation of a bubble surface upon interaction with a solid surface, the kinetics of three phase contact line expansion and the determination of attachment efficiencies through to the direct measurement of bubble-particle interaction forces. We have recently carried out a test of collision theory where the latter embraces both inertial and centrifugal forces. The real challenge is now to quantitatively describe the behaviour of real systems and to incorporate a reliable description of the behaviour of particles in flotation froths. The approach described is very robust when applied to flotation, both from qualitative and quantitative points of view, providing an intellectual foundation for understanding this complex process in separation science and technology.

A crescente preocupação da indústria automobilística com questões ambientais e com a segurança do condutor e passageiros, fez com que o setor siderúrgico desenvolvesse aços com maior valor tecnológico, entre eles surgiu os aços avançados de alta resistência, onde encontra-se o “Dual Phase” (DP) utilizado nesse estudo, que é caracterizado por uma microestrutura associada a uma matriz ferrítica com ilhas dispersas de martensita. Neste trabalho utilizou-se amostras de um aço baixo C e Mn, com micro adição de Nb e Mo, em desenvolvimento, onde se propôs uma avaliação das propriedades mecânicas através de um Ultramicrodurômetro, as amostras extraídas após a laminação a frio seguiram para o recozimento intercrítico, em escala laboratorial, com auxílio de forno Mufla e um equipamento de análise termomecânica (TMA), com 7 temperaturas de encharque distintas e subsequente resfriamento com patamar isotérmico a 600°C por 20 minutos. Onde observou-se que a utilização do ultramicrodurômetro instrumentado mostrou ser uma ferramenta com grande potencial para a avaliação almejada.

Navachab Mine experiences difficulties with pit wall stability in certain areas of the mine. The main reason for the instability is the fact that the geology comprises many joints and faults. Blasting, without impacting negatively on the stability of the pit walls, poses a major challenge.
