PETROLEUM'S importance in World War II can perhaps be better realized by the recitation of a few facts and figures: Gasoline needs in this war are already eighty times greater than in the last war. It takes nearly three pounds of gasoline to deliver one pound of bombs, filled with petroleum explosives, on an enemy objective. Every American soldier overseas requires an average of more than fifty gallons of petroleum products per week, with the oil used by Navy and supply ships and America's Allies boosting the consumption of oil per soldier to an even higher figure. Every oil well in the United States now must produce each day an average of four barrels of oil for war and combat jobs. More than fifty million gallons of gasoline, fuel oils, lubricants, and other petroleum products are now going directly to the fighting forces every day.

The Leadville District has been a prominent metal producer since its discovery in 1860. Veins and replacement bodies both have contributed to district production. The latter have been the major metal sources and are hosted within the Paleozoic Leadville, Dyer, and Manitou Dolomites. Igneous bodies representing eight separate events cut the sedimentary section. The main intrusive complex within the district occurs in the Breece Hill area and was the thermal center about which the vein and replacement ores exhibit mineralogical zoning. Precious metal-pyrite-quartz veins (quartz Th= 422 to 469°C; salinity < 4.2 wt. percent eNaCI) occur within or peripheral to the Breece Hill Intrusive Complex, whereas base metal veins and replacement bodies extend from the complex margins outward as much as 2 mi. Pre-ore and post-ore igneous bodies occur, but Fragmental Porphyry dikes immediately post-date the ore event. The Fragmental Porphyry grades downward from a heterolithic breccia with rock-flour matrix to one with a dark, glassy, sulfide- and phenocryst-bearing matrix, commonly with quartz-feldspar porphyry selvages on the dike. Two types of replacement bodies are recognized in the district: 1) the Leadville-type (LTM), massive sulfide (> 60% sulfides) bodies with recoverable Zn, Pb, Ag, and Au, and 2) the Sherman-type (STM), sulfide bodies (low total sulfide) with barite, galena, sphalerite, argentian tetra.hedrite, and minor pyrite. The latter type occurs only within the Leadville Dolomite and is found throughout the Mosquito Range and extending into the Alma District. The Leadville-type replacement bodies are zoned with a pyritic margin and base metal core. Wallrock alteration and trace Pb-Zn dispersion are strongly developed in igneous wallrocks but are weakly developed in carbonate wallrocks. Cu:Zn, Ag:Zn, and Au:Fe ratios increase outward from the center to the margins of LTM. Some of the sulfide bodies are localized on earlier-formed magnetite skarns. Pyrrhotite, pyrite, and marcasite are the earliest formed sulfide phases while chalcopyrite, marmatite, and galena developed later. Tetrahedrite and electrum occur in vugs and fine veinlets cutting the sulfides. Late-stage barite, dolomite, and fluorite occur as minor phases. Pressure-corrected Th for quartz (375-410°C), sphalerite (374-387°C), barite (320-360°C), and dolomite (310-314°C) fluid inclusions with salinities < 5.2 wt. percent eNaCI characterize the fluid responsible for the formation of the Leadville-type orebodies. These values clearly demonstrate the high temperature and low salinity of the ore fluids. Sulfur isotope analyses for galena and barite from LTM are - 1.9 to + 0.9%o and 7.8%o, respectively. Proximity to feeder veins and favorable dolomite hosts are the principal controls on ore localization. The Sherman-type bodies are not internally zoned but commonly have host rock silicification near the orebody margin or in the footwall rocks adjacent to fluid flowpaths along faults. Early quartz, pyrite, dolomite, and white barite precede base metal-silver minerals which are followed by late quartz and golden barite. It is not clear whether the early quartz and the late quartz and barite are part of the STM-forming process. Fluid inclusion analyses yield trapping temperatures as follows: early quartz, 316-341 °C; barite, 264-347°C; low-iron sphalerite, 215-265°C; and late quartz, 260-278°C. All inclusion fluids have salinities < 8.1 wt. percent eNaCI. Sulfur isotope values for barite and galena from STM range from 13.2 to 24.00/00 (avg: 18.4%o) and -6.8 to -3.8%o (avg: -5.5o/00), respectively. A hydrothermal fluid d34SSS of about 15%o is needed in order for galena and barite in equilibrium to exhibit the observed sulfur isotope compositions. Equilibrium sulfur isotope fractionation between barite and galena indicates a 300°C temperature of deposition. Two separate hydrothermal events appear to have taken place to form the distinctive Leadville-type orebodies and those of the Sherman-type assemblage. The STM is known to be older than the LTM. The latter is likely mid-Tertiary in age, post-dating emplacement of the Johnson Gulch Porphyry. LTM is clearly related to meteoric leaching of sulfur and lead (and other metals) from the upper portions of the Breece Hill Stock. Fluids were transmitted along faults, bedding planes, and contacts, and cooled away from the intrusive complex. Early ore fluids were weakly acidic and developed argillic assemblages in the igneous rocks adjacent to the fluid conduits. Reaction/replacement of carbonate rocks occurred where fluids encountered dolomite, but rapid neutralization prevented any wide-spread alteration beyond the ore-carbonate host contact. Pressures based on sphalerite geobarometry and stratigraphic reconstruction were 1.0-1.2 Kb. The high temperatures of vein and replacement ore fluids indicate that chloride complexing was more effective in metal transport than bisulfide complexes. Cooling, dilution of ore fluids, and reaction with carbonate rocks were the major factors in LTM ore deposition. STM formed over wide expanses of the Leadville Dolomite terrain adjacent to (and possibly capping) the Sawatch uplift. Sedimentary sulfur was derived from Pennsylvanian evaporite-bearing sequences adjacent to the uplift. Ore leads are strongly radiogenic (J-type) and are compatible with a crustal-leaching model. Temperatures of ore formation are higher, and ore-fluid salinities are lower than Mississippi Valley-type ore fluids. Superimposed upon dark-gray, diagenetic Leadville Dolomite are several stages of hydrothermal dolomite regionally distributed astride intrusive centers of the Colorado Mineral Belt. The presence of these later dolomites argues for dolomitization and later ore deposition in response to an abnormal thermal gradient caused by emplacement of Laramide batholiths and their generation of convective flow of meteoric fluids.

Recent decades have seen significant advancements in analytical and experimental techniques, thermodynamic theory, and computational capabilities in high temperature research which are particularly timely to address the challenges of increasingly complex and variable feedstocks in both primary and secondary pyrometallurgical processes, the need to optimise and improve them. Currently a research program is in progress on the development of the 20-component multi-phase thermodynamic database for pyrometallurgical smelting, refining and recycling systems describing thermodynamics and phase equilibria of molten slag, matte, speiss, salts, alloys and associated solids. The integrated experimental and modelling program has been supported for nearly two decades by several consortia of 14 major international companies with over 30 operations around the world, integrates many components, incorporates many in-house developments, and brings together many different groups of professionals of different levels from junior and mid-career to senior from both industry and university sectors. The aims of the paper are:  to outline the many components and issues of the overall program including analytical, experimental and thermodynamic modelling research as well as implementation of the results in industrial practice, professional education, planning and organisation issues.  to highlight the opportunities, challenges, and possible solutions.  to present these to all different groups of professionals involved in the current program.  and thus, importantly, to facilitate possible future further developments and collaborations in the field of phase equilibria and thermodynamics of complex high-temperature systems.

Under a cooperative agreement between the Bureau of Mines, the United States Geological Survey, and the United States Bureau of Standards, a study of the stone-quarrying industries of the country was begun in 1914. The results of investigations made have been published from time to time.1 During the World War the Bureau of Mines centered its attention on problems relating to national defense, and detailed studies of stone-quarry problems were not undertaken except for an investigation of labor saving at limestone quarries, reported in Technical Paper 203, which related to a question of military importance. Since the return of peace, the high cost of materials and labor has made more imperative than in prewar times the conduct of investigations for aiding the quarrying industries in every way possible to adopt more economical methods and to utilize the most efficient labor-saving equipment. The publications already issued have had a wide demand, and in the interest of the quarry industries the bureau proposes to issue additions to the series as rapidly as funds are available. In an endeavor to promote economy and the reduction of waste in the slate industry, a study of slate quarrying was begun in 1920 and covered a period of about two years. Sixty-five active quarries were visited, and a detailed study made of all problems bearing on their successful operation. Field study was supplemented by a study of all information available in books or published articles on slate quarrying.

Investigation of the costs of industrial accidents dates back to the 1920s. The Bureau of Mines was one of the pioneers in accident cost investigation with numerous studies published between 1928 and 1933. The bulk of these early investigations dealt only with costs which appeared as payouts on company books; that is, the direct cost of insurance premiums and the costs of medical expenses which resulted from industrial accidents. These early investigations, especially the Bureau&apos;s study of accident costs in Pennsylvania and Indiana coal mines provided the first real evidence that promotion of industrial safety pays back in dollars as well as in human life and wellbeing. In the 30s and 40s, investigations began to accumulate evidence that industrial accidents impacted more than just the direct operating expenses of a company (i.e., higher insurance premiums). The work of Heinrich pioneered these investigations, and produced strong evidence that the un¬insured costs of accidents far outweighed those costs covered by insurance. Heinrich developed and published a ratio of insured to uninsured costs of 1.4. Despite his cautionary statements about blanket application of this ratio it is used even today to estimate total costs of accidents. Simonds, in the late 40s and early 50s, extended the definitions of uninsured or indirect accident costs and developed what is now regarded as the principal method for estimating the total economic impact of industrial accidents. Simonds&apos; method served as the basis for development of the logic of the Accident Cost Indicator Model (ACIM). However, several departures from Simonds&apos; method were made to satisfy certain requirements imposed by the Bureau of Mines, and because information gathered during the course of our investigation justified a departure. Fluid flow properties of porous media have long been of interest in such varied disciplines as geology, geophysics, soil mechanics, and chemical, civil, and mechanical engineering. This interest has resulted in numerous models of porous media that have been proposed, tested, and found to be useful under, at best, only special circumstances. A critical review of most of these models is given by Scheidegger. 1 The application of each new tool to the study of porous media has helped to test some of the existing theories and to form new ideas based on the new parameters being measured. In the application of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques to the study of the properties of fluids in porous media, the theoretical studies of Korringa et al.2 resulted in a model for the relaxation of spin polarization of protons in a hydrogenous fluid in a pore of a solid. Seevers3,4 verified this model, established a method for measuring the surface-to-volume-ratio distribution in a porous medium, and proposed a technique for determining specific permeability in sandstones. In the present investigation, the uses of NMR methods are extended and a simple model of porous media is developed from an analysis of pulsed NMR measurements. In this model, the pore spaces of a porous medium are divided into three groups on the basis of their surface-to-volume ratios. To evaluate predictions of the NMR model, laboratory measurements of spin-lattice relaxation time, porosity, permeability, and residual (irreducible) water saturation were conducted on more than 150 sandstone samples obtained from four oil fields in North America. Applications are discussed for estimating the volume of movable fluid, ?p, and the specific permeability, k, of sandstone samples. The former parameter, which can be considered as producible porosity, is expressed by ?p = [1 -- (Swr/100)]? , .... (1) where + is porosity in percent of bulk volume and Swr is the residual (irreducible) water saturation in percent of pore volume at a capillary pressure of 50 Psi. Fast, nondestructive laboratory methods are described for determining porosity, movable fluid, and permeability of sandstone samples from measurements with a pulsed NMR (spin-echo) apparatus. Procedures are given for adapting these methods to samples of irregular shape and small size. Theory General In the Korringa, Seevers, and Torrey2 (KST) model the observed decrease in the spin-lattice relaxation time, T1, of protons of a hydrogenous liquid contained in the pore spaces of a porous solid is attributed to an increase in the correlation time for the random motion of the water molecules and to the presence of paramagnetic centers at the liquid-solid interface. A survey showed that there were 24 bin-related fatalities in the 5 year period of 1975 to 1979 in the minerals industry. Only 4 victims wore safety belts and only 1 of these had a second person attending his lifeline, as mandated by Federal safety regulations. Not one victim observed the three main Federal safety regulations governing work in and around bins. A study was conducted on the force necessary to pull victims partially buried in sand and limestone. Recommendations are made on procedures and safety equipment that can minimize bin-related accidents. A Handbook, directed to the plant engineer responsible for bin design and safety, was also issued detailing bin designs and flow-aid accessories as a function of the flowability of the stored material to better maintain material flow from bins. A comprehensive table of the flowability of many materials produced in the minerals industry is presented and simple procedures given for determining the flowability of materials if not available.

This paper will describe the copper concentrate slurry pipeline and pumping system between the concentrator and the port at Bougainville Copper Ltd. The operations of Bougainville Copper Ltd. are located on the island of Bougainville in the South Pacific. Geographically, it is the northernmost island of the Solomon Group but, politically, it is part of Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea is a United Nations Trust territory administered by Australia, having recently been given self-government, with independence scheduled for December 1974. (Fig. 1). The island is approximately 130 miles long by 30 miles wide, with the Crown Prince mountain range forming a spine along its length. The mountains in place are over 8,000 feet high with the mine located on the western flank at an elevation of 2,200 feet. Exploration on Bougainville for copper by Conzinc Riotinto of Australia (CRA) began in 1963 and by 1968, through geophysical, geochemical and diamond drilling methods, an orebody containing nearly one billion tons of ore grading approximately 0.48% Cu. and sane gold had been outlined. Bougainville Copper Ltd., the company operating the mine, is 53.6% wined by CRA, 20% mined by the government of Papua New Guinea with the public Folding the remainder of the shares. Through education, investigations, and studies and an expanded coal- mino inspection program the Bureau continued to dischargo the responsibility placed on it by Congress 39 years ago for promoting safety and health in the mineral industries. Although much still remains to be dono, definite progress was made in combating physical and psychological hazards in mines and plants. Accident-prevention cours os for coal-mine supervisory officials and special courses for coal-mine safety committeeman were inaugurated. First- aid, mine rescue, and other safety training was conducted for those engaged in all branches of the mineral industries. Assistance was given in recovery work after mine explosions and fires. Studies to reduce the danger of roof falls, the greatest single cause of fatal mine accidents, resulted in the development and adoption of new coal-mine roof-support techniques. Knowledge of the explosion and health hazards of mine and plant dusts and ways of pre-. venting them were advanced. Electrical equipment was tested for safety of operation in gassy coal mines, and emergency mine communications apparatus was developed and tested. More progress was made in the study of controlling flood waters that threaten life and property in the Pennsylvania anthracite region. More coal-mine inspections were made than in any previous year, and an impressive number of improvements resulted from the Federal inspectors' recommendations, even though many of them went unheeded. A program of con- trolling fires in inactive coal deposits on the public domain and private property was instituted during the year.

The characterisation of rock fracture networks is an important component of rock engineering applications involving stability assessment or fluid flow analysis. However, the derivation of a reliable rock fracture model remains a very challenging problem in practice. This paper describes a Bayesian framework, in the form of Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation, for the construction of such a model. Model conditioning using different data sources is discussed including seismic events recorded during hydraulic fracture stimulation, rock face fracture mapping data and downhole geophysical survey data. The freeware FracSim3D is used for the simulations.

Some conceptions, particularly those regarding the necessity of depth, have been fairly well shattered, as we find that they are present in the water tunnels of New York, on the surface at marble quarries in Vermont, and in the coal mines of the United States, as well as in the deep mines of the South African and Kolar gold fields, and in the nickel, copper and gold mines of Canada. There was reported in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 5754/ a series of tests to determine the compressibility and bearing strength of specimens prepared from blocks of potash salt obtained from a mine near Carlsbad , N. Mex . The events leading up to the investigation were sketched in a foreword by George S. Rice , then chief mining engineer of the Bureau ( retired September 30 , 1937 ) ; this foreword also gives a discussion of the possibility of increasing the ultimate total recovery of the potash salt by " second mining" of pillars or by use of a longwall system . In June 1936 , Rice and the senior author visited Carlsbad with H. I. Smith , chief of the mining division of the Geological Survey , to observe mining then in progress and to discuss with the management of one of the mines records of convergence of roof and floor which they were obtaining . It developed that serious thought was being given to the possibility of roof failure resulting from shear at the faces of pillars . There was envisioned the danger of such cracks extending upward to water - bearing strata . Obviously , the simple compression tests of the potash salt then being made would throw no light on this question , and tests of assemblies of potash and roof salts would have to be made . In this connection it is to be remembered that in the mine no sharp division exists between the potash salt being recovered and the nearly pure halite which forms the roof . The interlocked crystalline structure is continuous , and there is merely a very rapid decrease in the proportion of sylvite in a short distance vertically . Figure 2 of Technical Paper 575 shows that two samples near the top of the salt being mined contained , respectively , 51 and 65 percent potassium chloride . Contrasted with this is an analysis of the roof salt given on page 24 of that publication , which showed only 3.6 percent potassium chloride . As the data given in Technical Paper 575 show , the roof salt is much less plastic than the potash salt . The immediate roof may then be thought of as a more rigid stratum of indefinite extent resting on and continuous with yielding supports and loaded uniformly at the rate of 900 to 950 pounds per square inch . Just what thickness of the salt should be considered as immediate roof is uncertain .

Magnetic separation is routinely used in the processing of titaniumminerals, and the efficiency of these operations can be determined bymeasuring the magnetic properties of the process streams. The valuable components in the feed to a titanium minerals plant have specific magnetic susceptibilities ranging from -10-9 m3 kg-1 (zircon) to 10-6 m3 kg-1 (ilmenite). However, in an industrial environment, in which the mineral temperature may range from 20 to 120¦C, it is difficult to measure susceptibilities lower than about 10-7 m3 kg-1. Hence laboratory testing of spot samples from magnetic separators is currently required to obtain accurate performance data. This is an inherently slow process and where feed grades are variable, optimum performance of magnetic separators is generally not achieved.This paper describes the development of an inductance-basedinstrument for measuring very low levels of magnetic susceptibilityon-line. The signal from the instrument can be used for process control purposes to maintain optimum magnetic separator performance.A prototype instrument has been installed in the zircon scavengercircuit in an Australian titanium minerals plant. The circuit consists of a roll magnetic separator treating a feed consisting mainly of monazite and stained zircon. The monazite-rich magnetic fraction is returned to the mine site for disposal, while the non-magnetic fraction is recycled to the zircon wet circuit. Splitter positions in the separator are adjusted when the final zircon product fails to meet specification, or the magnetic fraction contains more than 30 per cent zircon. Weekly composite grain counts show that sub-optimal operation of the magnetic separator results in significant zircon losses into the magnetics fraction.Using the instrument, the zircon content of this stream can now beaccurately determined from the measured magnetic susceptibility,provided a correction for the effect of mineral temperature is applied using the Curie - Weiss relationship.

The purpose of this study was to examine the problems of underground coal mining in the United States, and to develop recommendations for an integrated Research and Development Program aimed at resolving these problems. Specific objectives of the study were as follows: ? To identify the existing inadequacies that have adverse effect on Health, Safety, External Environment, and Productivity. ? To identify opportunities for technological advance s to correct these inadequacies. ? To develop an integrated Research and Development Program designed to accomplish the advances identified. Many of the recommended tasks are dearly long range; this is especially true of those for study of future mining systems. However, funding recommendations in this Report are presented for a 5 -year period, since the developments accomplished during this period will undoubtedly be a factor in the formulation of the follow on tasks. Where applicable, the recommended Research and :Development could include development and test of pilot model equipment.

Up to one half of neodymium and praseodymium production, key ingredients in permanent magnets, is produced illegally. About 60% of cobalt production, critical in lithium-ion batteries and other applications, comes from central African states, and much of it is produced illegally. Tantalum, important in modern electronics, is also primarily sourced from central Africa and, again, much of it illegally. Illegal mineral production, as exemplified here, is often used to fund armed conflict. Furthermore, it is typically conducted with scant regard for human rights and environmental protection. It also leads to depressed prices which in turn limits the possibility of legitimate producers entering the market. Systems of traceability and provenance, along with cooperative supply chain participants can limit the production of illegitimate material and thereby improve conditions in the countries of origin and reduce downward pressure on prices.

With the postwar emergency for new housing and for new industrial buildings, much research has been done on lightweight aggregates for use in concrete and plaster. The trend toward lighter weight aggregates to relieve the dead load on the higher, steel frame- work buildings started toward the end of the last century. Progressively the requirements be- came more stringent, crushed bank slag, weighing 80 lb per cu ft as com- pared to 100 lb for crushed rock, was supplemented in some sections by foamed slags and expanded shales weighing from 40 to 60 lb per cu ft. In other sections cinders were used weighing from 40 to 50 lb, including sand. Sections favored with more recent vulcanism turned to pumice weighing from 30 to 60 lb, whereas other localities made use of diatomite, from 28 to 40 lb. Exfoliated vermiculite weighing from only 6 to 10 lb per cu ft came into use. As the search for lighter weights in aggregates continued so did the search for other desirable properties such as nailability, ease of cutting or channeling, and good insulation to both sound and heat. This search eventually led to a widespread interest in the expansion of perlite, or similar volcanic glasses, with the result that in 1946, the Office of the Housing Expediter&apos; listed eleven firms reporting the operation of processing plants either on pilot or commercial scale producing aggregates weighing from 2 to 16 lb per cu ft.

The first six Reports of Investigations in this series , pertaining to the investigation of stemming at the Mount Weather Testing Adit, dealt with ( 1 ) the dust produced by blasting , ( 2) the effect of stemming upon gases generated by blasting , ( 3 ) the relative advantages and disadvantages of different types of stemming and no stemming when used with 60 - percent ammonia gelatin dynamite , (4) the length of stemming material through which a primer will fire and detonate a charge of dynamite , ( 5) comparison of dust and gases produced when blasting charges of dynamite in drill holes , bombs, and mud - cap shots , and ( 6 ) the relative advantages and disadvantages of different types of stemming and no stemming when used with 40 - percent ammonia gelatin dynamite .
