Design and construction of the Epping to Chatswood Rail Line tunnels in Sydney, Australia required an innovative approach to define hydrogeological properties of the Sydney Hawkesbury Sandstone and provided an insight into the hydraulic behaviour of fractured sedimentary rocks. To meet restrictive water inflow and infiltration criteria both the pre-treatment of zones of fractured or highly jointed rock, and waterproofing using an interior spray on membrane for the finished drained tunnels and stations was required. Methods typically used to address the interaction of groundwater and tunnels in the Sydney Basin are demonstrated by case histories from major design-build tunnel projects.

THE West Edmond oil field, which covers parts of Oklahoma, Canadian, Kingfisher, and Logan Counties in the State of Oklahoma, is in geographical extent the largest single oil field found in the state. At the present time, its area of 26,800 acres is almost twice as large as the Oklahoma City field, which hitherto was the state's largest field. Many authorities believe that the West Edmond field is the most important oil pool found in the United States since Pearl Harbor. The discovery of the field without the help of geological, geophysical, or other recognized technical information, the fact that the oil and gas accumulated in a stratigraphic or wedge-type trap, and the rapid development of the productive area under wartime conditions are some of the interesting features of the field. The West Edmond field lies west of the Oklahoma City, Britton, and Edmond fields. The field is in an area that has been considered on the west flank of the Granite Ridge line of folding, on which a number of Central Oklahoma's most important oil fields are located. Over a period of years, especially since the discovery of the new pools such as Oklahoma City, Edmond, Britton, and Crescent, the general area of the West Edmond field has been explored intensively by geological and geophysical methods. This led at times to the drilling of a few dry Wilcox sand tests.

METRICATION In order to bring South Africa into line with metric countries the world over and in view of the indisputable advantages of using the comma as a decimal sign, the Metrication Advisory Board has decided to recommend that the comma be used consistently as decimal sign as from April 1, 1971. Numbers consisting of more than three figures are separated by spaces into groups of three to the left and right of the comma, and not by commas, e.g... 2 734 671,512 73 A quantity such as 12,41 kg is read as "twelve comma four one kilograms" and 31,34 km as "thirty-one comma three four kilometres." A motor-car previously described as a 3.8 litre model now becomes a 3,8 litre model. THE BRITISH COUNCIL AWARDS 1972-1973 The British Council invites applications from permanent residents of all races in the Republic of South Africa and South West Africa, for the following awards:- SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships are available to such residents who hold University degrees or comparable professional qualifications. The scholarships are tenable for post-graduate study at Universities and other educational establishments in Britain for the academic year of approximately ten months beginning 1st October 1972. All arrangements will be made by the British Council and the scholarships will include tuition fees, a maintenance allowance, approved travel in Britain, return fares to Britain, a books grant and a clothing grant. The closing date for applications is 31st July, 1971. BURSARIES Bursaries are available to such permanent residents who hold University degrees or who, being already established in their professions or trades, hold other qualifications. The bursaries are tenable at British educational in-institutions or other suitable establishments in Britain for a course of training, study or research lasting not less than two months or more than six. The British Council will arrange full programmes and professional contacts, and the bursaries will include a maintenance grant, a books grant, authorised course fees and certain other expenses. The British Council may, at its discretion, bear the cost of single or return fares to Britain. The closing date for application is 31st July, 1971. TRAVEL GRANTS Travel grants each of £300 are available in respect of journeys to Britain undertaken between 1st April, 1972, and 31st March, 1973, and are provided to facilitate visits to British Universities by persons holding staff appointments or graduate research posts at South African Universities. Visits must normally be of at least six months duration though grants are occasionally made for visits lasting for one complete term. Grant holders will make their own arrangements with the universities which they wish to visit and will be responsible for finding their own accommodation. The method of Substance Flow Analysis (abbreviated as SFA) provides a helpful tool for the study of the industrial metabolism of a certain metal within a regional level. In this work the flow of lead in China, 2006, was traced within the STAF model, and the situation of production, consumption and recycling of lead resources in China were introduced. The SFA is performed on lead flows during its one year life cycle in detail. As one of the biggest producer and consumer of lead in the world, China is facing a problem depletion of lead resources. How to increase the resource efficiency is a significant issue for lead industry of China. Based on the result, several suggestions were proposed in the paper, aiming to contribute important reference information for the industrial metabolism and resource management and recycling of lead industry in China.

Mining companies are moving towards automated haul trucks and other equipment. One reason for this is that if automated trucks can operate in a standard pattern over and over again without variation, then human error is reduced, if not eliminated.The challenge for mining production leaders/managers is to ensure operators follow standard operating procedures for load and dump operations, with each operator doing the same thing, every time. However, operators are only human and inconsistent performance is rife at every mine site. The finger may be pointed at the operators for not doing as instructed. The clarity and variability of trainer instructions may be considered causal to the problem. Herein lies the problem. Almost all operators believe they are following the procedure very closely; moreover, they all demonstrate a strong desire to conform to instruction.Using video analysis and feedback, each operator can be shown where and by how much they differ from the benchmark set by their company. Operators, often for the first time, can see definitively what they are doing, compared to industry best practice.The technology utilised by real-time video (RTV) crews measures time, distance and angles. It can overlay the video of the operator at the load site, with video of the perfect pass. Operators are amazed when they see how near to, or how far they are from best practice.The footage and data gathered by RTV assists operators in understanding exactly what adjustments are required to increase proficiency. It also assists load and dump superintendents to identify where in the process they are losing time. Introduction The Open Cut is one of the best known landmarks in South Dakota's Black Hills. It is the site of the original discovery of the Homestake ledge, or lead, in 1876. Between that time and 1945, the Open Cut produced about 36 Mt (40 million st) of gold ore, the majority of which was drawn from underground operations. In 1981, a drilling program was undertaken to determine how much ore the old timers left behind. The results of this study indicated an ore body made up of broken and caved ground, and solid blocks in pillars and crowns. Reserves are estimated at about 6.8 Mt (7.5 million st) of gold ore, grading at 4 g/t (0.116 oz per st). Total tonnage of material, including waste, is estimated at more than 60 Mt (66 million st). The mining plan is a combination open pit and underground operations. The bottom 78 m (255 ft) will be mined by the underground panel-caving method. The open pit was designed as a contractor operation up to the expected milling stage or the point of sustained ore production. The pit was designed to avoid disturbance of US Highway 85 near Lead, SD. In 1983, the South Dakota Board of Minerals and Environment approved the mining and reclamation plan. Test mining began in the north of the Open Cut using open pit methods. Upon completion of the test pit, Homestake Mining's board of directors approved an expanded mine plan. They committed an additional $27.1 million to prestrip the ore body that is expected to yield 23 t (750,000 oz) of gold. Project life is estimated at 15 years. Exploration program In early 1980, 10 diamond drill holes were drilled from the surface in the vicinity of the east side of the Open Cut. The reserves delineated by that drilling were too small to justify their development. A continuation of this study attempted to quantify the tonnage remaining in the bottom of the Open Cut in the crushed remnants of old stope-and-crown pillars. This was originally thought to be minable by improved drawhole methods using highly mechanized procedures. By early 1981, however, thinking turned toward surface mining methods. The effort to quantify minable ore tonnage ultimately involved drilling 385 reverse-circulation rotary drill holes. These were drilled from August 1981 to March 1983 in several groups of holes. Each group, or drilling program, had a slightly different immediate goal or purpose. The holes were drilled to various depths using truck-mounted Drill Tech 40 drills with doublewalled 76 mm (3 in.) pipe with 134 mm (5.25 in.) three-cone rotary bits. Initially, wet drilling was employed using a cyclone collection system. Since cutting recovery was not as high as it should have been, all subsequent drilling was dry. The cuttings were collected and deposited by way of a cyclone into the sample bag. The pickup for the cuttings using the three-cone bits was about 50 mm (2 in.) above the bottom of the hole. Overall cutting recovery for the drilling program was estimated at 75%. Samples were taken on each 1.5 m (5 ft) of hole drilled. Each sample was split into three 48-g (1-2/3 assay ton) charges. The accepted value was the straight average of the three charges. Because of the known "nugget effect," assays were nearly impossible to duplicate. Therefore, to validate the regular assays, a series of screen fire assays were run. Based on this method of assays and checks, it was concluded that 10% more ounces would be produced than indicated by mine grade. Test pit The northernmost portion of the mine as planned is known as the Terraville test pit. This portion was mined ahead of the rest and separately. It provided answers to questions on slope stability, reserves correlation, mill recoveries, mining costs, and surface mining conditions in various weather and ground conditions since many boulders and much timber were expected. The mining plan for this portion of the pit was successful. More ore was mined than was expected. Mixing of Open Cut ore with underground ore in the mill feed was successful. Recovery of gold from gold ores has been driven by the available technology and its configuration in the process plant flow sheet.Conventional practice in test work programs has the ore being ground fine (to 106 or 75 microns) to ensure liberation ahead of leaching or flotation. This paper identifies that, in many cases, gold and gold sulfide carriers will liberate and be recovered to a concentrate at much coarser sizes.There is an exponential increase in energy consumption relative to particle size reduction. This impact becomes extreme when comparing crushing a product to 1 mm against grinding to 75?microns.The resultant reduction in energy consumption when liberating and separating at 1 mm or coarser compared to grinding to 75 microns can be in the order of 15 kWh/t or 60 per cent of energy in the comminution circuit.Recovery of free gold and gold sulfide carriers by preconcentration (using continuous gravity devices such as the InLine Pressure Jig), combined with flotation of the fine gold and gold carriers, can result in significant power savings.There are multiple locations within the flow sheet that can be targeted using this process, including recovery in the cyclone underflow of existing plants, preconcentration ahead of the plant or complete greenfield, low-energy process plants designed from first principles based on data from a Gekko developed test work regime.We will describe the process of defining mineralogy in the laboratory and the decision-making process through to actual applications in the field.Several examples will be provided, including a South African Witwatersrand gold ore, several Australian gold ores and others, indicating the benefits of this process and where it has been brought to commercial reality.CITATION:Gray, A H, Davies, M and Theletsane, G, 2014. An adequate knowledge of the overall behavior of a rock mass at a given site is fundamental to the satisfactory design of a rock slope. The be- havior is controlled by a variety of factors, in- cluding rock type, geological structure, stress and ground water conditions. There are essentially three lines of approach that may be used to obtain information on the in-situ rock mass behavior for the purpose of the design of a rock slope: (1) Direct measurements of rock mass properties by means ol laboratory and field tests. (2) Evaluation of rock mass properties from a study of slope failure case histories and sta- tistical information on stable and unstable natural rock slopes. (3) Evaluation of in-situ behavior of rock mass by using a physical or mathematical model technique.

"INTRODUCTION The Bynum property is about 15 miles west of Gadsden and 1 mile north of Walnut Grove, Etowah County, Ala. The ore lies in layers and as irregular masses and pockets in the clay residue from decomposed quartzite and limestone formations to the district.The property has been developed by means of numerous shallow shafts sunk to water level - about 25 foot. Operations are confined to small-scale, selective mining of pockets of high-grade ore. The ore is marketed directly, without beneficiation. The property does not yield a large amount of manganese ores. No estimates of reserve ore tonnages are available.A 206-pound sample was furnished for test. It was taken at random from a stock rile estimated to contain 130 tons of ore. The sample con¬sisted of a mixture of manganese oxides, iron oxides, and siliceous fragments in clay. The manganese occurred largely as soft, unconsolidated pyrolusite and wad. Some hard, crystalline pieces of psilomelane were distributed through the soft material. Small amounts of iron oxides were associated with the manganese oxides. Chert, quartzite, and clay comprised the gangue minerals.Dry analysis of the sample was as follows: 36.0 percent manganese, 6.1 percent iron, 2: .0 percent silica, 1.5 percent calcium carbonate, 0.36 percent phosphorus, 3.0 percent alumina, 2.2 percent barium, and 0.31 percent zinc."

"This study explores froth flotation and selective flocculation methods to recycle waste phosphors containing several rare earth elements, namely, yttrium (Y), europium (Eu), cerium (Ce) and terbium (Tb). The effects of the presence or absence of collector and of flocculant and their dosages, as well as the pH, were investigated. Reverse flotation resulted in concentrates with grade of 27.03 percent and recovery rate of 71.36 percent, while flocculation resulted in concentrates with grade of 31.43 percent and recovery rate of 91.28 percent. The flotation and flocculation behaviors were further analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis, zeta potential measurements, particle size distribution and other methods. The successful separation of rare earth minerals by flotation was attributed to the selective adsorption of the collector onto quartz, making it particularly recoverable by reverse flotation so as to be separated from the valuable materials. The analysis of the particle aggregation process indicated that its better flocculation performance was due to the selective adsorption of flocculants onto the unwanted materials, enlarging the flocculant sizes by forming aggregations and facilitating the separation of rare earth minerals from waste materials based on different settling rates. IntroductionBecause waste phosphors pose the problems of heavy environmental burden and high risk to human health (Hu and Cheng, 2012) as a result of containing heavy metals such as mercury and manganese (He et al., 2006; Lucas and Emery, 2006), they have received added attention as urban mining resources for extracting rare earth elements (REEs) like yttrium (Y), europium (Eu), cerium (Ce) and terbium (Tb).At present, chemical processes such as acid leaching, alkali fusion, roasting and extraction are the primary methods for recovering REEs from waste phosphors (De Michelis et al., 2011; Li et al., 2012; Li, 2010). With these strategies, phosphors can be effectively decomposed and their REEs extracted. After the removal of impurities, the REEs can be efficiently precipitated by adding an H2C2O4 solution (Porob et al., 2012). Although relatively high recovery rates are achieved, those processes entail high energy consumption and can cause severe environmental pollution."

"Ecstall Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Texas Gulf Incorporated operates the Kidd Creek Mine, a 10,000 tons per day base metal producer, near Timmins, Ontario. Two different ore types are mined and milled: copper-zinc and silver-lead-zinc. At the highly automated Ecstall Concentrator the ores are processed by selective flotation in threes individual circuits. One of the most important metallurgical tools for process control is a sample system incorporating continuous on-stream x-ray analysis. Recently this system was further automated by adding computer control of reagents for two copper-zinc flotation circuits. The computer programs, utilizing optimum seeking methods and smelter contract terms, have increased copper recovery 0.8%, zinc recovery 1.6%, and reduced reagent costs by 12%. Although not anticipated, copper and zinc concentrate grades were improved modestly as well.INTRODUCTIONSEcstall Mining Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Texas Gulf Incorporated operates the Kidd Creek Mine, one of the world's major base metal producers, near the old gold mining centre of Timmins, Ontario. Discovered in 1964, the property was brought into production in November, 1966. Originally designed for 9,000 tons per day, the operation now treats 10,000 tons per day of two different ore types mined from a single open pit. In the near future, open pit ore will be supplemented by ore from an underground operation now being readied for productionAt the Ecstall Concentrator the ores are processed by selective flotation in three individual circuits. The whole plant is highly automated and control is coordinated from a central control room. The treatment process follows conventional practices although fine grinding is required for optimum flotation recoveries. Normally, two circuits treat copper-zinc ore at a combined rate of 6,500 tons per day while the third circuit treats 3,500 tons per day of silver-lead-zinc ore. Special production averages 2,400 tons per day."

The metallic reduction of vanadium chlorides was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines as a possible new route for preparing vanadium metal in an effort to develop a production process that would be adaptable to large-scale plant production and would yield metal of uniformly high quality. Vanadium tetrachloride was usually prepared by chlorinating vanadium pentoxide in the presence of carbon. Although oxygen-?free tetrachloride was difficult to prepare this way, it could be prepared by the direct chlorination of vanadium carbide. Lower valent vanadium trichloride was prepared by the thermal decomposition of vanadium tetrachloride. Vanadium dichloride was also prepared by the thermal disproportionation of vanadium trichloride.

"Ore mineralogy and texture are primary variables controlling mill recovery efficiency in flotation plants. However, tracking daily variations of key mineralogical characteristics such as species-by-species liberation is not possible with current on stream analysers and assay lab techniques. In addition, traditional plant mineralogical analysis limited by long data turn-around times from central analysis laboratories typically provides only a time-averaged view of mill performance, e.g. by means of monthly composite feed, con or tailings analysis.This paper presents the results of a development and first field test of an on-site Automated Mineralogy solution (MLA or QEMSCAN) with the specific goal of monitoring recovery variation, ore quality and flotation performance on a mineral species-by-species and day-by-day basis, from up to twelve million direct particle observations per month. The trial was performed at a Pb/Zn-Ag operation in the US from November 2012 to April 2013. The focus of the study was three-fold: to validate the robustness of equipment and operational procedures for daily use by mine site technicians at a remote mine site to develop a methodology to boil down hundred-thousands of Automated Mineralogy particle data from size-by-size con and tailings samples to a couple of numbers meaningful to chief metallurgists to monitor recovery trend changes and correlate these to changes in the feed properties and/or flotation efficiency.The study focused primarily on the Pb/Ag rougher-concentrator circuit. Ten polished blocks of two and three size fractions of con and tailings were prepared by mine site technicians during a daily twelve hour shift. Eight hours of daily measurement time by the instrument revealed an estimate of the dayÆs recovery performance, ore quality and flotation performance for Freibergite (Ag-species) and Galena (Pb-species), within 36 hours from initial sampling. Data quality was assessed by means of calculated versus measured assay reconciliation. Cumulative sum curves of recovery performance, ore quality and flotation performance reveal trend changes with a frequency of 1 to 4 weeks. These were correlated to cumulative sum curves of e.g. locked and slimed particle classes of the mineral species of interest, attempting to identify a possible root cause of recovery performance trend changes. At its annual meeting on March 5, 1928, in Washington, D. C., the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association gave to the Ford Collieries Co., Curtisville, Pa., a certificate of honor for "having worked 922,628 underground man-shifts from August 14, 1920, to December 31, 1926, producing 5,755,669 short tons of coal without a fatality." This remarkable record certainly deserved recognition. It developed that this company's freedom from fatalities continued until October 2, 1929, hence the full period during which no underground fatalities occurred was from August 14, 1920, to October 2, 1929, or 9 years, 1 month, and 18 days, the total tonnage being over 7,700,000. Table 1, shows the complete safety record of the Ford Collieries Co. since 1920 as given by the officials of the company. The first item in Table 1 shows a remarkable performance. This company since 1920 has mined 15 times more coal per fatal accident than the average pro- duction per fatal accident for the State of Pennsylvania in 1928 (255,257 tons). Excluding the two fatalities (one in 1922 and one in 1929) the severity rate for the same period has been 1.259 per thousand hours worked, a record of which the company may justly be proud. However, including the fatal accidents the rate is 2.407. This compares favorably with an average of 12.4 in 1928 for 66 mines in the National Safety Competition. The Ford Collieries Co. operates three mines located in the vicinity of Curtisville, Allegheny County, Pa. One of these mines, Benjamin No. 1, is idle at the present time. The officials are: A. R. Pollock, general manager, Curtisville, Pa., and C. W. Pollock, assistant general manager in charge of safety and operation.

This report presents the results of washability examinations of seven coals from the principal coal-producing fields of Montana. A complete performance test of the Baum-type jig operated at one of the mines is included, as are the results of cleaning tests made on two of the coals in a dense-medium pilot plant. The coals examined from the Red Lodge, Bull Mountain, and Forsyth fields are comparatively easy to clean. Ash contents of 5 to 10 percent can be obtained at yields of washed coal ranging from 90 to 95 percent. The coal from the Great Falls field, however, could not be cleaned readily to less than 14 percent ash, and the rejection of impurity would amount to over 25 percent. The two coals treated in the dense-medium pilot plant were characterized by sharp separation of impurity, high recovery efficiency, and satisfactory reduction in ash content.

This report presents new findings and consolidates previously published data to provide a single reference containing a concise and comprehensive description of the Bureau's work on electrolytic chromium. Two separate systems for electrolytic-chromium recovery were developed, one designated as the oxidized system the other as the reduced system. The electrowinning of chromium metal follows the dissolution of chromium from the ore or from ferrochrome and its separation from gangue and metallic impurities. Chromite was first solubilized by pressure digestion at slightly elevated temperatures in an oxidized acid solution using Na2Cr2O7 as an oxidizing agent. Later it was found that a sodium-free electrolyte was preferable, using return-cell anolyte containing H2SO4 and Cr03 as the oxidizing agent. Gangue materials were separated from the soluble metallics by filtration; and, after the Cr+3 had been stabilized, the metallic impurities were separated as crystalline ammonium salts by vacuum crystallization.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report identifies potential causes of slip-and-fall accidents occurring during surface mine equipment maintenance and describes the relative roles of direct worker behavior and machine design. The relative roles of human behavior and machine design in the causation of slip-and-fall accidents were determined through analysis of accident records, observations of maintenance worker behavior, and evaluation of mine machinery. From these data, relative risk ratios were calculated. Behavior had a relative risk ratio of 1.5; machine design, specifically access systems design, had a relative risk ratio of 2.2. Of the access systems, ladders had the highest relative risk ratio, 7.0. This study suggests that accident intervention would be most profitably made in improving the design of systems used to access maintenance worker areas of mining equipment.

The ability to identify hazards during a workplace examination is a critical skill for mineworkers to have in order to maintain a safe workplace. While research suggests that being able to successfully recognize hazards requires a complex set of competencies, it is unclear which competencies are most critical to adequately perform a workplace examination. This paper presents a hazard recognition competencies framework as an explanation of the competencies that affect mineworker hazard recognition. To better understand how the industry is selecting and preparing workplace examiners, researchers fromthe National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) interviewed nine health and safety (H&S) professionals at surface stone, sand, and gravel mine sites throughout the USA. A primary purpose of these interviews was to verify the competencies included in the hazard recognition competencies framework and to understand why these competencies are critical. Finally, the results of this study are presented within the context of current NIOSH research findings related to hazard recognition.
