Roy Hill is a large iron ore mining, processing, railing and port operation in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Since delivering its first shipments to customers in December 2015, Roy Hill has quickly achieved a 60 Mtpa production rate of lump and fines products. The process plant, principally consisting of wet scrubbing, screening and de-sanding unit processes, was expanded from early 2020 to include operation of a Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS) Plant. The WHIMS Plant treats tailings to recover approximately 4 Mtpa of ultra-fine (nominally -150 μm) high-grade hematitic concentrate which, after dewatering, is blended into the fines product. Unlike typical hematite concentrates, which consist largely of dense particles with smooth surfaces, the WHIMS concentrate is characterised by very finely microporous hematitic/goethitic particles, reflecting the overall characteristics of the Roy Hill deposit. Detailed test work has been conducted in collaboration with CSIRO to characterise the WHIMS concentrate in terms of its physical and mineralogical properties, and to determine its influence on the granulation and sintering performance of Roy Hill fines – from fundamental/lab-scale and sinterpot perspectives. The results demonstrate that blending of the high-grade hematitic Roy Hill WHIMS concentrate into the fines product can maintain overall sinter quality and positively influence granulation and sinter melt formation, as well as Fe grade.

A indústria siderúrgica possui aspectos ambientais associados ao seu processo produtivo ligados em grande parte à emissão de material particulado, efluentes líquidos e geração de resíduos. A emissão de material particulado ocorre durante diversas etapas do processo produtivo, cabendo a estes a aplicação de sistemas para o controle ambiental. Em especial, a planta de sinterização possui como característica emissões primárias ligadas à exaustão da máquina, e secundárias referentes aos sistemas de captações em linhas de peneiramento, retorno de finos e pontos de transferência de correias transportadoras. Para o tratamento das emissões secundárias, a ArcelorMittal Tubarão possui um sistema de despoeiramento. Em virtude de melhorias de processo e alterações na produção, o sistema necessita de uma maior vazão para atendimento à demanda atual. Neste contexto, este trabalho se propôs a avaliar e testar a técnica de supressão de pó em pontos de transferência entre correias transportadoras para verificar sua aplicabilidade. Como conclusão, constatou-se que esta técnica é aplicável em regiões específicas com bons resultados na redução de emissão visível. Além disso, o uso do supressor reduz a quantidade de captações necessárias ao sistema complementando o controle do atual sistema de despoeiramento.

Industries in general and the mining industry in particular have become more safe than ever before. However, there is a need to increase the search for the causes of mining work-related injuries and to contribute to their reduction through job design, work procedures, and worker training. Mine accident and hazard control has to be practiced in a manner which is consistent with the overall objectives of the mine management, among which are the optimum allocation and effective utilization of the resources. The purposes of this paper are to (i) review the role risk analysis in safety management with references from mining and other industries; (ii) discuss the risk measures appropriate for injury analysis; (iii) present a set of analytical tools to injury experience data in under-ground coal mines; (i v) apply these tools on case study example; (v) discuss the results of the case study; and (vi) amplify the application limitations and the future research needs.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated acoustic emission (AE) and the Kaiser effect in six types of rock: St. Cloud gray granodiorite, Barre granite, Dresser basalt, Salem limestone, Berea sandstone, and a volcanic tuff. AE signatures were used for interpreting the rock deformation stage and for indicating mechanisms of failure in uniaxial compression. The research demonstrated the advantages of using the volumetric stress-strain curve, as opposed to the more conventional uniaxial curve, for correlating AE response signatures with deformation stages and fracture processes in the rock. Standardized experimental procedures were used for the AE monitoring. The Kaiser effect was shown to be capable of determining prestress levels to within a few percentage points in uniaxial compression tests. Also, prestress memory was shown to be retained in the rock for periods of up to at least. 5 months, the maximum period of testing. The Kaiser effect AE technology holds promise for providing a comparatively inexpensive and less complex method for examihing stress history in rock. However, since the conftning stress has a pronounced influence on the Kaiser effect, it must be considered in developing technology for determining peak fteld stresses based on the Kaiser effect.

THE known phenomenon that a test-piece of ferro-magnetic steel is magnetic after it has been broken in tension indicates that, while it is being loaded, the steel acquires magnetic properties. In the present investigation of the influence of the stress on the magnetic flux, repeated pulsating stresses of increasing amplitude, varying from zero to the maximum tensile value, i.e., pull-pull loading, were employed. The specimens were prepared from two types of carbon steel and two of alloy steel. The magnitude of the magnetic flux was determined indirectly. The voltage and mode of variation of the electromotive force induced in a coil surrounding the stressed steel specimen were measured as an indication of the varying magnetic flux within the specimen. Curves representing the electromotive force induced by the varying magnetic flux show that as the tensile load increased so also the magnetic flux increased, with a corresponding increase in measured e.m.f. At a certain stress there is a sharp bend in the voltage curve (point Win the diagram, Figure 5); this critical stress corresponds very closely with the yield stress (0.2 per cent permanent strain). Beyond this point, slight increases in the stress produce large increases in the voltage. The wave form of the e.m.f. was registered on an oscillograph. Analysis of the curves so obtained demonstrated the necessity of continuing these experiments, in order to determine the type of induced wave form associated with various types and amplitudes of stresses. In these experiments, the shape of the stress wave was sinusoidal, although the shape of the induced e.m.f. was sinusoidal only up to a certain load and became more and more complex above this load.

"Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a recognized tool to evaluate various processing routes for metal production. Declining ore grades and higher specific energy requirements for primary metal production put greater emphasis on recycling. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of steel and aluminium metal production were quantified with recycling scenarios using material recovery facility (MRF) data from the database of SimaPro LCA software. The GHG footprint of the MRF is relatively minor compared with that of associated transport during collection (i.e. 10 times more than MRF) of curbside recyclable material. Additionally, if the bulk recyclable material is sent overseas (i.e. Australia to China) from the MRF for further processing, the GHG footprint of shipping can significantly be larger compared with the sum of the collection and MRF (assuming electricity is from same source). Thus opportunities exist for reducing GHG emissions from secondary metal production if it is processed close to the MRF.IntroductionIt is a challenge to recycle metals significantly, although theoretically infinite recycling is possible due to their elemental nature. Leaks from the metal stocks in society occur through corrosion, wear and dispersive uses, or via land filling or similar activities that return metals to the earth. In order to provide a technically sound and transparent assessment of metal recycling, a methodology such as life cycle assessment (LCA) should be used. By taking a life cycle perspective, the beneficial recycling properties of metals can be evaluated in a manner that enables appropriate comparisons with other materials or product systems that do not have recycling loops. In practice, mixtures of primary and secondary metals are often used in new products, and also at the end-of-life various processing methods are used for recycling.The difficulty of introducing recycling into LCA is to set the right boundaries for the different flows ending in different product systems. It is a question of which observed material flow belongs to the first product system and which one to the second or subsequent systems. Recycling can be part of any product LCA. However, it is often a complex issue which requires specific considerations. As pointed out by Yellishetty et al. and Birat et al. [l, 2], LCA practitioners are left with much freedom in allocation of environmental burdens to account for recycling, thus making subjective judgments on recycling and allocation of credits to recycling. This often makes it difficult to compare the results of LCA studies conducted by two different practitioners even on the same processes. As LCA is often used to define policy in government, business and society circles, it should be based on a sound, objective and unbiased description of recycling."

Subsidence phenomenon as an unwanted consequence of underground mining can cause problems for environment and surface structures in mine area. Surface subsidence prediction for inclined and steep seams has been given less attention than horizontal seams due to the difficulties involved in the extraction of such coal-seams. This paper introduces a new profile function method for prediction of surface subsidence due to inclined coal-seam mining. The results of calculation with the new function indicate that the predicted value has good agreement with the measured data. Recent developments in mechanizing longwall it mining in Europe have aroused considerable interest among American coal-mine operators because this method provides an opportunity to improve safety, production, efficiency, and recovery. The success of longwall mining in Europe has depended to a large degree on development of effective roof-control systems. One of the major contributing factors in designing these systems is development off improved supports, which combine high load-bearing capacities with controlled yield characteristics, to use in the face areas. Other factors that relate to successful longwall mining involve knowledge of the structural properties of the strata above end below the coal bed being mined, movements of these strata induced by mining, and effects of the strata movements on the strata itself, as well as on the support system used. Extensive studies of the above factors relating to long-wall mining have been made in coal-mining countries abroad, and corresponding studies (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)3/ of room-and-pillar operations have been made in this country. Although descriptions and results of experiments of mechanized longwall operations in the United States have been published (6, 7, 8), this is the first instrumented study of roof behavior on a longwall operation. In view of the possible widespread application of this method of mining to American coal mines, where underground mining conditions are different from those found in European mines, an investigation was conducted at a mechanized longwall operation inn the Lancashire No. 15 mine, Barnes & Tucker Co., Cambric County, Bakerton, Pa., to study the factors that affect roof control. This report describes this investigation and discusses the results. A Brookfield viscometer fitted with a stainless steel bob was used to measure the viscosity of industrial lead blast furnace slags between 1126 and 1298°c. Slag oxidation state was characterized by first annealing the? slag samples at 750°c in sealed copper tubes in order to precipitate magnetite crystals. The magnetite concentration was then measured on an Outokumpu Saturated Magnetic Analyzer. Using an Arrhenius-type equation, a viscosity model was developed by regression. The equation below accounted for 75% of the variability in the data used to generate the regression coefficients and, on average, could predict viscosity within ± 12% of the measured value. The greatest difficulty encountered in measuring viscosity was due to the occasional presence of solids in the slag which caused, at times, erroneously high viscosity measurements. Precautions to minimize this problem are outlined in the text.

Behavioral accidents are a particular type of accident. They are caused by inappropriate individual behaviors and faulty reactions. Catastrophe theory is a means for mathematically modeling the dynamic processes that underlie behavioral accidents. Based on a comprehensive data base of mining accidents, a computerized catastrophe model has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. This model systematically links individual psychological, group behavioral, and mine environmental variables with other accident causing factors. It answers several longstanding questions about why some normally safe behaving persons may spontaneously engage in unsafe acts that have high risks of serious injury. Field tests with the model indicate that it has three important uses: It can be used as an effective training aid for increasing employee safety consciousness; it can be used as a management laboratory for testing decision alternatives and policies; and it can be used to help design the most effective work teams.

The silicate slag and copper matte that are the byproducts of smelting copper in a reverberatory furnace contain SiO2, FeO, Fe3O4, CaO and Al2O3, and Cu, Fe and S, respectively. These components influence the oxide (Cuox), sulfide (Cusul) and total (Cutotal) copper content lost in the waste slag. This paper uses multiple linear regression analysis (MLRA) to determine the degree of influence. The results of calculations obtained using MLRA were compared to actual measured results and found to have a large degree of correspondence, with the coefficient of determination R2 = 0.975. These results indicate that slag composition and copper content in the matte influence the copper losses in the waste slag with a probability of above 97%. It was determined that, of the total copper content of the slag, 74% is in sulfide and 26% in oxide form, and that this ratio is not dependent on the slag or matte composition.

Several hydrometallurgical leach processes have been recently proposed for the recovery of copper from copper concentrates. These include the Cymet Process of Cypress Metallurgical Processes Corporation, the Arbiter Process of the Anaconda Company, and the Treadwell Process of Treadwell Engineering company(1). These processes and similar processes for recovery of other minerals, have several phenomenological similarities which make their quantitative description difficult at best. These include (a) the presence of more than one phase, (b) non-uniform mineralization of the feed concentrate, (c) surface and diffusional effects, and (d) a particle size distribution which varies with time. Semi-theoretical, rather than purely empirical, treatment of such processes in their developmental stages will result in a better understanding of the physico-chemical mechanisms in effect. This, in turn, will allow reliable process designs to be made on reasonable time scales for reasonable development costs. Once a production unit is built, such an approach will provide straightforward methods for process control and optimization. A research and development effort to determine criteria and procedures for semi- theoretically characterizing such mineral leach recovery processes has been initiated in a joint venture by the Arizona Bureau of Mines and the College of Mines at the University of Arizona. This group has as its task the mathematical characterization of hydrometallurgical leach recovery processes using semi- theoretical mechanisms for the underlying phenomena. The resulting models are experimentally verified and parameterized on the laboratory scale in such a way that they can be utilized with similarity criteria to provide reliable scaleup to production designs. This discussion will be centered around the elements of such an approach and how they fit together.

This Bureau of Mines report describes a study conducted to determine the relationship of mineral habit to particle size and shape characteristics for prismatic, acicular, fibrous, and asbestiform varieties of tremolite. Particle measurements were made with the petrographic microscope at X 1,250 and the scanning electron microscope at magnifications up to X 10,000. All of the varieties of tremolite, upon Wiley milling, produced a significant percentage of particles that meet the Federal regulatory criteria for counting as asbestos fibers. However, only the asbestiform variety gave milled particles that fell into a size range of >10 µm in length and <0.5 µm in width; some medical scientists consider this range significant for production of adverse health effects.

"INTRODUCTION Burning refuse dumps are a common and by no means pleasant sight in most coal-mining distracts; they have been and largely continue to be accepted as a necessary, if undesirable, adjunct to coal-mining operations. The odor, smoke, and fumes emanating from the burning dumps have caused much property damage, as well as aroused unfavorable public sentiment in the areas thus affected; and there is reason to believe that, in at least some cases, they have had an adverse effect on the health of certain communities, adjacent to mines. In some instances such communities have been owned or controlled by the mining companies and in others they are incorporated towns.After the start of World War II, it was necessary for Great Britain to take prompt and effective measures to extinguish or at least blanket the burning refuse dumps at collieries, since the fires served as beacons for the enemy planes; the problem thus became a matter of national security rather than one of local inconvenience. If the United States should become involved in a bombing war, these dumps might became a source of national danger, hence now is a propitious time to at least make a start on available methods of solving this problem. Much progress was made in Great Britain in extinguishing the dump fires that had burned for years and in preventing newly made dumps from taking fire.Burning refuse dumps have not been a national problem in the United States, but they are a nuisance and frequently a danger and often a fruitful cause of poor public relations on account of the odor and fumes. Many progressive coal-mining companies are taking effective and positive action in trying to extinguish old dump fires and to build new dumps so they are less likely to fire.The purpose of this paper is to provide information about the problem as well as on ways to extinguish refuse dump fires, to describe methods of constructing dumps that probably will prevent them from firing, and to point out some of the danger that exists when dumps are improperly built and when they are on fire."

A paper presented at Perumin 35 in 2022 described the concepts and a state-of-the-art system with extruded curbs and PVC anchor wings, adopted among others at the first four stages of Las Bambas tailings dam in Peru, discussing how upstream geomembrane water barriers can mitigate the numerous issues, including environmental aspects, of tailings dams’ design and operation. This paper, beside presenting a summary of what has been carried out so far at Las Bambas, amplifies the subject, presenting the results by means of the data of the leakage monitoring system, showing that the flow monitoring data at the downstream toe are seasonally consistent, and in alignment with design predictions.

This paper presents a general re-view of the various methods of briquetting coals, with and without the aid of a binder, with special reference to the production of a suitable briquette from Nova Scotia 'fines' for re-blending with industrial coal. From the economic and technical viewpoints, either small stoker-sized briquettes made with about 4 per cent asphalt in standard low-pressure double-roll presses, or briquettes made without binder in high-pressure double-roll presses, appear to be the most reasonable solution at present.

This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1954 was made under a co-operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 101 samples of aviation gasoline. Data also are given for 30 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers I 1954 production in their laboratories and the results submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 19 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 15 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

The application of the law of supply and demand to the sale of crude oil is generally conceded, but the motives underlying the buyer&apos;s (refiner&apos;s) demands are not always obvious to the seller (producer). In some cases this obscurity has led to the conclusion that the refiner may be unnecessarily particular when he selects one crude and rejects another. This preference, however, is very largely the reflection of the refiner&apos;s product demands and the quality of the stocks obtainable from the selected crude. The purpose of this paper is to point out critical characteristies of the major classes of refined products and to show how crudes vary in their suitability for such products. With relatively few exceptions, available processing methods and addition agents make it theoretically possible to produce any type of refined product from any crude source, although it may not be economically sound to do so. The widespread application of thermal cracking for converting higher boiling stocks into gasoline is well known. More recently cracking and refining in the presence of catalysts9 have been developed, as well as various processes for polymerizing lighter hydrocarbons into gasolines having desirable characteristics.6 For several years, selective solvents have been applied commercially to refining inferior quality kerosene, Diesel fuel and lubricating oil distillates.3 Improved methods for refining lubricating oils from crude residual4 formerly suitable only for fuel, are now in use and a number of special solvent processes are available for dewaxing lubricating oils to low pour point.5 These improved refining methods have been developed not only to meet the demand for improved product quality but also to enable the refiner to obtain quality products from crude sources that would not yield such products by the older refining methods. In many cases, the utilization of these modern refining tools necessitates an appreciable expenditure for equipment as well as added manufacturing costs, and their application therefore must be justified economically. Despite the availability of such tools, the added processing costs involved and yields obtainable may render their application entirely impractical. The recycling of waste of electric and electronic equipment (WEEE) is one of the main modern challenges. Among the variety of WEEE, batteries can be set apart due to their composition and their growing demand along with portable devices. The objective of this work is to characterize the thermal behavior of a sample of mixed types of batteries using a thermobalance (TGA). The results of tests showed that Cd evaporated up to 800ºC, Zn evaporation occurred mainly above 900ºC and manganese oxides were pre-reduced to MnO at temperatures above 900ºC.
