The Iron and steel industry is one of the most intensive energy consuming processes. The majority of iron making processes is now directed towards the uses of fossil-based energy sources like coke, coal and oil. Recently, emphasis has been paid to replace part of fossil- based energy sources with renewable biomass-derived reducing agents. In the present work, the possibility of the effective use of woody biomass in carbon-iron oxide composites was investigated. Wood powder was carbonized in N2 atmosphere at 300 up to 450oC. The carbon content in the produced bio-char increased with temperature. The porosity of the char arises from maintaining the cellular structure inherent in wood biomass increases with temperature. The reduction behavior of four iron oxide-bio char composites having different fixed carbon content were carried out non-isothermally up to 1200oC in Ar atmosphere using thermogravimetric anlyser (TGA). Quadruple mass spectroscopy (QMS) was also adopted to measure the CO, CO2 concentrations in the off gases resulted during reduction process. The effect of volatile matter on the reduction of iron oxide was intensively studied. The different phases developed in the reduced product were identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The reduction of composites was found to proceed in a stepwise manner (Fe2O3?Fe3O4?FexO?Fe).

About five years ago we showed that it is possible to use the spectral in- formation in the light emitted by the off-gas flame of a PS converter for on-line production control. Very recently measurements have been performed using improved optical equipment and data evaluation software, resulting in both improved accuracy and the establishment of new optical process parameters. Using the optical signals the slag heats could be stopped at a predetermined Cu content of the white metal with an accuracy of +0.2% Cu m the range 74-78% Cu. A good correlation was found between the slag composition and optical data, providing a possibility for on-line monitoring of the SiO2 content of the slag. The measurements indicate the possibility of predicting the optimum end-point of the copper-making stage and having real time information on the impurity removal. Factors influencing the optical parameters, such as blowrate, Pb content, temperature etc. will be discussed.

This report presents the results of the Bureau of Mines' twenty-first semiannual survey of motor gasoline marketed in the United States. The 12 cities in which samples were collected have teen chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories, as it is obviously impractical to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country. The survey reveals that the motor gasoline which is being marketed in the United States this winter is decidedly more volatile than that sold a year ago. Samples from all cities show a decided improvement in volatility except those from Laramie, Wyo., which show a small decrease in volatility.

In 1998, approximately 57,000 tons of titanium metal was consumed in the form of mill products (1). Only about 5% of the 4 million tons of titanium minerals consumed each year is used to produce titanium metal, with the remainder primarily used to produce titanium dioxide pigment. Titanium metal production is primarily based on the direct chlorination of futile to produce titanium tetrachloride, which is then reduced to metal using the Kroll magnesium reduction process. The use of titanium is tied to its high strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance. Aerospace is the largest application for titanium. In this paper, we discuss all aspects of the titanium industry from ore deposits through extraction to present and future applications. The methods of both primary (mining of ore, extraction, and purification) and secondary (forming and machining) operations will be analyzed. The chemical and physical properties of titanium metal will be briefly examined. Present and future applications for titanium will be discussed. Finally, the economics of titanium metal production also are analyzed as well as the advantages and disadvantages of various alternative extraction methods.

Over the years, Coal Beneficiation at Tata Steel - West Bokaro has seen varied changes. With increasing R.O.M throughputs & lowering of the concentrate ash, Fine Coal Beneficiation process has thrown up myriad challenges. Development of Synthetic Collector was initiated couple of years back with Technical assistance from NLC Nalco India Ltd. Coal from West Bokaro unit was sent to Nalco?s Naperville (US) research lab for developing Tailor made synthetic collector . After comprehensive lab flotation studies, synthetic collector was developed & recommended for plant evaluation. The lab scale results were very promising in terms of improved separation efficiency & yield at similar ash level. The collector sample received from Nalco research laboratory were revalidated at Nalco Kolkata lab and finally at Tata Steel West Bokaro lab, confirming the promising results. (S.E 25-30 % better than HS Diesel) The key factors playing out for this improvement initiative are a) Scope for improvement in Clean Coal Yield at same or lower ash level coupled with improved Selectivity and Separation Efficiency b) Introduction of a Synthetic Collector with a Green Chemistry and subsequent replacement of H S Diesel, which is highly inflammable with a less inflammable & safer product Trial was conducted at plant scale in two phases and comparative performance of the Collector vis-à-vis Diesel was evaluated across the following Coal Seams of Q- SE (Seam VII, VIII, VI, IX and X). The results generated are very promising and the improvements observed are summarized below. ? Separation efficiency improvement by more than 20% observed. ? Flotation Fines yield increase varied from 0.6- 1.5 % on raw coal basis across different seams. ? Consumption pattern is 20-25 % lower than Diesel. THIS necessarily brief sketch will attempt to summarize the high lights of perhaps the best meeting so far held by the Iron and Steel Division. All sessions were well attended and the discussion was vigorous and of a high order. The technical sessions opened. on Tuesday morning. "Precipitation Hardening of Copper Steels" was discussed by Cyril S. Smith and Earl W. Palmer, and dealt with steel with a 1 per cent copper content. Discussion brought out that there were no fabricating difficulties, but that the surface might be somewhat checked due to intergranular penetration of copper which could be easily taken care of. Probable advantages of steels of this type for high temperatures were pointed out. "An Improved Nickel-chromium Hardened Chilled Cast Iron," by J. S. Vanick, described a wear-resistant cast iron and evoked a lively discussion.

"Quang Ninh province is located in the north east of Vietnam and the coal mining in the province generates two thirds of the province’s GDP. The coal is extracted from both open pit and underground mines for the country’s complete coal export and by a share of more than 90% for domestic coal usage. Overburden generated through open pit mines is piled up nearby in the form of large waste rock dumps. The side-hill fill dumping near open pit mines is the source of environmental degradation in the region. Among the current problems at solid waste rock dump sites are dust emissions during and after dumping as well as Acid Rock Drainage (ARD). One of the major existing problems at waste rock dumps is dump stability (comprising erosion, sliding and subsidence issues). The RAME R&D project (Research Association Mining and Environment in Vietnam) is - among other activities - actively involved in the research for stabilisation and rehabilitation of mine waste rock dumps in Vietnam in the form of several sub-projects. The Institute of Mining Engineering I of RWTH Aachen University is leading the sub-project of mine waste dump stabilisation in co-operation with Chair of Geotechnical Engineering and Brenk Systemplanung GmbH. Mine waste dumping in the form of layers as an alternative to the side-hill fill dumping is expected to bring up environmental and economical benefits by minimising the problems of dump sites with the contribution to a sustainable development. Reduction of the post construction settlements, long term stable dump profile with minimum erosion, improvement of material parameters for geotechnical slope stability through compaction from hauling trucks as well as economical evaluation of new dumping concepts are the areas of the current research. The project has been financed by German Federal Ministry for Research and Education (BMBF). The ultimate aim of the sub-project is the compilation of the project results in the form of a "Best Practice Guide" and software based "Decision Support System" for planning and management of solid mine waste dumps."

Australian researchers have developed new technologies aimed at improving safety and productivity at openpit mines. A data acquisition and feedback system for electric rope shovels has been shown to substantially reduce cycle times and decrease excessive machine duty caused by stalls. This data acquisition system was developed by the Cooperative Research Center for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE). It has been tested on a P&H 4100A shovel at Coal & Allied’s Hunter Valley operations and a P&H 4100XPB at BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance’s Goonyella Riverside Mine in Central Queensland. In addition, CMTE member P&H Mine Pro Services has used the technology to acquire field data from a P&H 4100XPBrope shovel at RAG’s Belle Ayr Mine in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin.

"The Courier 300 on-stream analysis system manufactured by Outokumpu has now been in operation at five of the company's concentration plants long enough to give a reliable basis for closer examination of the benefits achieved in control of these processes. The first system was installed at the Pyhiisalmi mine at the end of 1967. Since November 1970, two analyzers have been in operation at Pyhiisalmi feeding the assay data to a process computer which controls the whole plant and does the optimization of the process. In October 1970 the Courier 300 analysis system was installed at S. T. O. LESKINEN J. KOSKINEN the Keretti concentrator of the Outokumpu mine, followed soon by installations at the Vihanti Mine in May 1971, at the new Vuonos mine in November J 971 and at t he Kotalahti mine in December 1971. Since installation of the Courier analysis systems, considerable improvements have been achieved in the control and the economy of the plants. Immediate knowledge of the changes in the process and the possibility for rapid action has resulted in evener production and higher capacity and recovery. The recovery has been increased most significantly at the Vihanti concentrator, which operates on a complex ore. Consumption of chemicals has been reduced at all concentrators. Due to the fact that process control and partly also bilance analysis are not achieved by conventional methods any more, it has been possible to reduce the personnel of the laboratories drastically. Two of the plants, viz. the Pyhiisalmi and the Vuonos concentrators, are computercontrolled. The Vuonos concentrator started operation in January 1972 under computer control from the very beginning. The Pyhiisalmi concentrator has been computer-controlled since 1970. The Courier 300 analysis system was described in detail at the AIME Centennial Annual Meeting (1971). In this paper, less attention is paid to the analysis system. Only the sampling system of the Courier 300 is described in more detail. In the development of sampling equipment, effective use has been made of the company's wide knowledge of the problems involved and the test field offered by its concentrators. The sampling equipment includes secondary samplers and six basically different types of primary samplers, with which most sampling situations can be managed."

The Bureau of Mines investigated lode tin deposits on Potato Mountain, Seward Peninsula, Alaska. Tin was found to occur as cassiterite associated with quartz, tourmaline, pyrite, arsenopyrite, and earthy clays, but the deposits lack the varied accessory minerals commonly found in tin districts. The tin-bearing deposits are in metasediments along minor breaks and bedding planes but not in the crushed earthy filling of major faults. Cassiterite and sulfides occur with quartz in veins, both with and without earthy clays, and disseminated through tourmalinized wall rocks. The deposits are characterized by irregular segregations containing 1 to 10 percent tin within zones averaging not over 0.25 percent tin. The largest segregation exposed is on the summit of a low hill on the east-central slopes of Little Potato Mountain; most of the outcroppings are in an area trending east to west, roughly 10 to 30 feet wide and 300 feet long. Sample values ranged as high as 12 percent tin, but the average grade may be about 1 percent tin. The extreme irregularity of both grade and composition precludes a more exact determination. Similar concentrations are scattered for over 1,000 feet to the west and north, but these are smaller and lower in grade. Elsewhere on Potato Mountain, generally similar deposits occur as clusters of veinlets at widely separated points in the metasedimentary walls of major faults.

Reconciliation of metal production from a sublevel cave (SLC) mining operation is a complicated process. SLC reconciliation is unlike reconciliation for open stope operations, where a tonnage of extracted ore can be assigned to an exact volume of in situ ore, and a direct comparison made between the estimation of contained metal and actual metal production. In SLC operations the ore extracted from a particular SLC drawpoint will be composed in part from the parcel of freshly blasted in situ material, in part from varying components of ore material (from cave stocks) flowing down from other previously mined areas vertically above the current draw position and in part from external dilution. This leads to difficulties in reconciling production grades against estimated grades. The problem is that we know how much metal we have produced but we can not precisely say where it has come from. Metal production reconciliation is fundamental in assessing ore reserve estimation accuracy and performance and in determining a draw management strategy for SLC mining. In terms of contained metal, differences in extracted metal compared to in situ metal represent changes to cave stocks. To generate local estimates of the cave stocks, differences in metal for each ring are treated as additions to or subtractions from a series of vertical columns of stocks extending throughout the height of the cave. The sum of metal differences (extracted versus in situ) for each vertical column results in a residual metal map at any particular mining level. The metal maps show areas where the metal production has been greater than or less than expected. The maps also highlight areas in the cave where residual metal is located, areas where targeted overdraw can reduce cave stocks.

This report on the characteristics of commercial aviation gasolines presents compilations of inspection test data furnished on their products by manufacturers of commercial grades of aviation gasoline, and special data obtained in Bureau of Mines laboratories on samples of these gasolines. Data and physical samples for the survey were submitted by 15 manufacturers on 18 grade 80, 21 grade 91/98, 22 grade 100/130, and 10 grade 115/145 aviation fuels.

Introduction The preparation of the following paper has been undertaken in the belief that a description of the development methods and equipment used at Lake Shore, at the present time, will prove of general ? interest. Working depths of nearly a mile and a half in shaft sinking and of more than one mile for stoping operations have imposed problems not encountered at shallower horizons. Among the problems contributing to the difficulty of mining at extreme depths might be mentioned: Rock pressures Ventilation Hoisting Shorter work period at the face Geological considerations In the main, the effects of these factors add to the difficulty of mining at depth, but it is not entirely true to say that each must necessarily become more pronounced as mining operations proceed to greater depths. Corrective measures may, in some cases, retard the effect and in others may even relieve some of the difficulty. It is proposed here to discuss these features in the light of the experience at Lake Shore, and to present, in some detail, the current practice in shaft sinking and in driving ore and waste passes, raises, drifts and cross-cuts.

The success of a mining operation depends on the quality of data used in decision-making processes and the people involved in making operational decisions. At Olympic Dam, mine geologists form an integral part of the teams that make decisions at various key points in the mine operational value chain. Mine geologists are directly and indirectly involved in all stages of the mining process, namely, orebody definition and categorisation, mine design and planning, metallurgical processing, and reconciliation.Due to the sheer size and complexity of the Olympic Dam deposit, each mining stage has been divided into smaller units within which decisions are made in line with the overall mine operational plan. In each of these units, the decisions and inputs made by mine geologists has ensured that consideration of geological factors is made in the mining process. Over time, the mine geology team has demonstrated a systematic approach in the development and improvement of their processes in line with the mine’s operational needs, such as understanding the in-stope ore variability and maintaining a consistent ore feed to the plant. An understanding and interpretation of the mineralisation distribution, based on acquired data, has proven to be important in the definition of resource modelling parameters. These parameters in turn affect the quality of grade estimates and their downstream use in planning, production and subsequent reconciliation processes. The continual study of the geology of the deposit, and unravelling its complexity through research has been crucial to the metals extraction process. The involvement of mine geologists through each of the mine value processes places Olympic Dam in a favourable position to benefit from future opportunities that will take advantage of the increasing operational demands and production pressures, and the ever changing economic conditions.This paper reviews the role mine geologists play in the realisation of the Olympic Dam deposit, from ore to product, through their interaction and collaboration with other departments and stakeholders. Neste trabalho foi avaliada a influência da porcentagem de austenita retida nas propriedades mecânicas de um ferro fundido nodular submetido ao processo de Têmpera e Partição (T&P). O tratamento térmico consiste do aquecimento do material à 880ºC por um tempo de encharque de 2h para completa austenitização, seguida de têmpera em óleo até a temperatura de 170ºC, intermediária às temperaturas Ms e Mf, para formação de uma quantidade controlada de martensita atérmica. Em seguida, o material foi reaquecido até 375ºC (tratamento de partição) por diferentes tempos (15, 60 e 120 minutos), sendo subsequentemente resfriado ao ar até a temperatura ambiente. Foram utilizadas as técnicas de microscopia óptica (MO) e eletrônica de varredura (MEV) para a caracterização microestrutural do material obtido. Ensaios de tração e impacto (Charpy) foram realizados para obtenção das propriedades mecânicas do material. Para longos tempos de partição, foi verificada uma diminuição na fração volumétrica de austenita. Com a diminuição da porcentagem de austenita retida observou-se uma diminuição nas propriedades como alongamento e resistência ao impacto do material.

O objetivo geral deste trabalho foi produzir e caracterizar as propriedades mecânicas de um compósito abrasivo nanoestruturado no sistema D-Si, via sinterização cíclica de alta pressão e alta temperatura (APAT). A sinterização cíclica em alta pressão e alta temperatura de compósitos foi feita a partir de uma mistura de 70% diamante e 30% de Si como ligante, e com 1 a 4 ciclos de pressão (P) de 7GPa-4GPa e temperatura (T) 1600°C-300°C, para um tempo (t) de 1min. O aumento do número de ciclos gerou razoável elevação na microdureza e densidade das amostras. Os valores médios de tenacidade à fratura ficaram entre 8,86 e 9,43 MPa.m1/2. No ensaio de desgaste o aumento do número de ciclos diminuiu a perda de massa das amostras no disco de granito. As curvas termogravimétricas apresentaram uma boa estabilidade térmica dos compósitos até a temperatura de 660ºC. Finalmente, por meio deste trabalho será possível melhorar a produção de futuros compósitos abrasivos no sistema D-Si.

The AMAX of Canada Limited Kitsault mine is located approximately 150 kilometers, by air, north of Prince Rupert, British Columbia at the head end of A1 ice Arm, just east of the southern tip of the Alaskan Panhandle. It is presently only accessible by sea or air, although a road is being constructed by the company which will provide access to Terrace, a commercial centre with a population of about 15,000. The topography is typically coastal mountainous with peaks rising to 2,100 meters around the head end of the inlet. The concentrator is at an elevation of 515 meters with the mine at 630 meters. This open pit molybdenum mine was previously operated between 1968 and 1972 by British Columbia Molybdenum Limited, a subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Corporation. AMAX of Canada Limited has spent $194 million to refurbish and expand this operation.

By the end of 2022, the south-eastern Copper Belt region of the Democratic Republic of Congo was host to more than 40 small, medium, and relatively large sized copper solvent extraction sites. To date, solvent extraction reagents supplied in this region have never exceeded 50% of ketoxime content. We generated laboratory extraction and strip isotherms and used these with the BASF IsocalcTM modelling software to assess the benefit of using higher ketoxime blends on the main metallurgical performance indicators such as copper recovery and net transfer. Pure ketoxime extractants combine a relatively low strip point and a decent loading capacity, which are most effective as the pH of the pregnant leach solution gets closer to 2.
