Currently two of the most important characteristics of construction aggregates are (a) the particle size distribution (psd) and (b) the “shape” of the aggregate particles. The long established test methods and standards for these properties require substantial resources and most suppliers can take samples and conduct tests at intervals measured in days (psd) or even months (shape). Furthermore these tests require time: so the results are available only after material has been stockpiled or shipped. In the rare cases where problems are found the out-of-spec material has often been shipped to points unknown. There are substantial advantages to be obtained if the psd and other geometrical properties could be obtained from the material as it moves through the production processes and if the results could be reported back within seconds or minutes to Plant Control Managers. This paper describes a single on-line system used to evaluate production of crushed material in a production quarry. The system consists of an enclosure (containing the camera and lighting etc.) mounted over a production belt. Images are fed by fiber optic cable to a nearby control room where the data are analyzed; stored; displayed; and made available for integration into a process control system. Numerous forms of display can be created according to the needs of the producer. Once programmed by an automation engineer all functions of operation are fully automated. The system has permitted over 400 tests per hour with a feed back time less than 2 seconds. Sufficient geometrical measurements are made so that many different “shape” factors can be computed on a similar time scale. The paper summarizes the results from approximately 100 shifts of about 8 hours each and compares the imaging method with the current standard hand methods. Study of the data generated showed that, when combined with additional plant information, the system can be used to generate additional useful control information.

The stone-quarrying and related industries of the United States made large gains in employment in 1936 over 1935, according to reports furnished by operating companies to the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior. Not only were more men employed, but also increases were made in the number of man-days of labor performed and in the number of man-hours worked in 1936. The increase in employment, however, was accompanied by an increase in the number of accidental deaths and injuries among the workers and by a slight increase in the accident-frequency rate per million man-hours worked. The fact that the larger number of accidents resulted in only a slight increase in the accident rate is explained by the large gain made in the number of man-hours worked during 1936. The accident rate in 1936, although higher than in 1935, was the lowest and therefore the best that the industry has experienced in any previous year except 1932 since complete and comparable figures first became available in 1916, a period of 21 years. Operators' reports to the Bureau of Mines showed that the industry as a whole employed an average of 80,022 men in 1936 and that the men worked a total of 18,874,254 man-days or 147,064,448 man-hours. Accidents in and about the plants caused 91 deaths and 5,717 nonfatal lost-time injuries among the workers. The number of injuries and deaths represented an accident-frequency rate of 39.5 per million man-hours worked, compared with a rate of 38.2 in 1935.

As part of the Bureau of Mines health and safety research program in strata control, a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) system capable of pene-trating approximately 10 ft into the mine roof has been devised to identify anomalistic conditions. The GPR system consists of a transmitter with carrier frequencies of 250, 500, and 1,000 MHz, utilizing a dipole antenna, and a receiver, consisting of a dipole antenna fed into a sampler with a time base housed in a storage oscilloscope. A computer was utilized for data acquisition and data processing. Data analysis by computer enhancement revealed recognizable return ra-dar signatures from the middle man rock and main roof of the test site. These stratigraphic anomalies can be cataloged for recognizable fea-tures, which from the past history of the mine may have been shown to create strata control problems. Early recognition of such features could lead to immediate corrective actions and result in the saving of lives.

The adsorptive and granulate forming MetClean™ process has been used at many locations in Northern Sweden, Norway, Denmark, France, Spain, Mongolia, Japan and Australia. It has been pilot tested and used in full scale treatment plants to remove metals from:mine watersleachate from solid waste in incineration flue gasleachate from fly ash damsleachate from landfill and waste ponds.The following paper provides details of pilot and plants tests on the effectiveness of MetClean™ in removing arsenic, antimony, barium, cadmium, copper, molybdenum, nickel, radium, uranium, vanadium and zinc. Results show that MetClean™ may reduce the concentration of these metals in treated effluent water to the one part per billion (ppb) range.The paper also finds that, for specific metals, the optimal adsorption condition depends on the:pH levelmolar relation between the specific targeted metal and the addition of iron (II) or manganese (II)type of oxidation agentssalinity levelpresence of other metals.The most effective pH level varies according to the targeted metal but falls within the pH 5 to pH 11 range. A compromise pH level may be set when more than one metal is targeted for removal at the same time and through only one process step. The removal efficiency of one or both metals may be affected by operating at a compromise rather than optimum pH level.The MetClean process generates non-hazardous solid waste. "INTRODUCTION The Camp Bird mine was investigated by Bureau of Mines engineers 3/ September 22 and 24, 1942, and April 29 and 30, 1944. In a subsequent report and supplement, it was recommended that core drilling be done below the 14th. level to determine if commercial ore existed at greater depths, and particularly if ore existed in the vein or adjacent thereto where it passes into the sedimentary formations estimated to underlie the volcanics approximately 400 feet below the 14th level.Seven diamond-drill holes aggregating 3,956 feet were drilled. Four of these holes were under the Hematite ore body and three were under the Big Discovery ore body. Two holes under, the Hematite ore body wore directed at angles but little steeper than the angle of dip of the vein and penetrated the sedimentaries beneath the volcanics close to the vein. Enough low-grade ore was found at the base of the Telluride conglomerate to indicate the presence of a large body of low-grade zinc sulfide ore. Two holes were directed to crosscut the vein at a depth of approximately 125 feet below the 14th level. No commercial ore was cut, but the vein showed the average width and same general characteristics as at the 14th level. One hole under the Big Discovery ore body was directed to crosscut the vein and test the base of the Telluride conglomerate in the footwall block. No commercial ore was found in either the vein or the sedimentary horizon. One hole was directed to test the base of the Telluride conglomerate in close proximity to the vein in the hanging-wall block. This hole was lost approximately 100 feet short of its objective, and a third hole was drilled to accomplish this same thing. PRICE changes in competing fuels in the last three decades have reflected the changes in the consuming habits of the people of the United States. Prior to World War 11 the importance of fuel oil and fuel gas increased almost constantly while the relative importance of both bituminous and anthracite coal decreased. During this same prewar period coal prices increased to a much greater extent than oil prices. In fact, in many years, oil prices declined and in most cases are now no higher than they were back in 1925-26. During the war natural economic trends were entirely upset because of the tremendous petroleum requirements of the Army and Navy. Under these conditions many industrial plants were converted to the use of coal and the new installations in home heating and industrial plants of all kinds which might have used oil were practically eliminated. Increased TBM performance is leading the way for resurgence in tunneling activity in NYC. Tunnels will be excavated in the same geologic formations as previously excavated D&B tunnels whose construction records are providing valuable insight into the prediction of rock mass behavior. This report compares an eight mile stretch of NYC Water Tunnel #2 with the recently excavated eleven mile stretch of the TBM driven Water Tunnel #3. Comparisons of the type and amount of rock support installed as well as water inflows and grout quantities are made. Rock mass characteristics specific to TBM performance are also evaluated.

Identification and quantification of cementitious phases in cemented paste backfill (CPB) is difficult due to the fineness of tailings and the low binder content used in the mixture. Techniques such as X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry were ineffective (mainly due to tailing mineral interference) to identify and quantify hydration products in most works reported in the literature. On the other hand, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used in many cases but mainly for qualitative purposes. This paper presents the development of a new approach based on a computer program (SEM-XMAP) that combines X-ray dot mapping images acquired by SEM and generates a coloured image representing the mineralogy and the microstructure of a given CPB specimen. The technique is applied to one CPB sample mixed with blast furnace slag (BFS) and acidic sulphated mixing water sampled in a mine dewatering system. The technique allowed identifying calcic matrix, unhydrated and partially hydrated BFS particles, and sulphated phases.

The results of field experiments on wells which required stimulation indicated that engineered well-completions will cause an increase in ultimate recovery at reduced costs. Techniques and tools have been developed which can be used to establish well conditions most conducive to successful stimulation. Cementing, perforating and treating are bound together so completely that the success of one phase is completely dependent on the .effectiveness of the preceding phase. A method of determining the efficiency or effectiveness of any given well-stimulation treatment has been derived. Pressure behaviour during a treatment can be analyzed to yield the total percentage of the formation which has been treated.

Traditional acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD) wastewater treatment focuses on the iron co-precipitation/adsorption process as this is a very effective method of reducing heavy metals, including copper, lead, zinc, arsenic, etc, to parts per billion (ppb) levels in AMD wastewater streams. One of the drawbacks to this method however is the large volume of sludge produced and subsequent disposal costs for the mine site concerned.A proprietary metals treatment system called high density sludge (denoted HDS) which significantly reduces the quantity of waste generated is described in this paper. This process generates a dewatered sludge that contains in the order of 50 to 55 per cent solids. This sludge is denser than conventionally dewatered sludge, which typically contains only 20 to 30 per cent solids. This advanced process has a wide range of applications and can be easily retrofitted into existing AMD treatment systems. It has been successfully installed at several mine sites to treat AMD wastewaters. "Coal bumps, also referred to as dynamic failure events or coal bursts (Lawson, Weakley, and Miller, 2016), continue to be a hazard in underground coal mines. While current design methods have significantly reduced the occurrence of coal bumps, they have not been completely eliminated. This paper investigates a correlation between coal compositional components, coal molecular structure, and probability of coal bumps in an effort to deepen understanding of coal behavior in an effort to reduce hazards in underground coal mines.Samples from the Penn State Office of Coal (PSOC) Department of Energy Coal Samples (DECS) were obtained for Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis using the KBr pellet method. Peaks indicative of the coal molecular structures were obtained using spectral integration software. These data, combined with published elemental data, were compared to historic bump occurrence in order to establish a possible correlation. Finally, results based on multivariate analysis of the elemental and FTIR data with bump status as the dependent variable suggest that elemental sulfur and molecular structure can be used as an indicator of bump susceptibility within the sample set considered.INTRODUCTIONThe study of coal requires consideration of multiple variables: percentages of organic and inorganic components, organic component origins, coal age, pore structure, cleat density, elemental composition, etc. Examining coal in situ increases the number of variables, such as coal depth, seam thickness, surrounding stratigraphy, and so forth. This collection of variables influences the subsequent behavior of coal simultaneously, and weighing their relative impact is a challenge for researchers. “A problem never exists in isolation; it is surrounded by other problems in space and time” (Ackoff, 1956). Having a substance such as coal that we know so much about, and yet so little, we have to ask what can be learned.An experimental study using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was undertaken to determine if the chemical structure of coal contains information which may lead to a better understanding of triggers or attributes which may, in turn, lead to an increased probability of a dynamic failure event. While a full analysis of the factors driving dynamic failure are beyond the scope of this study, it is possible that a better understanding of the chemical structure of coal will lead to an increased knowledge of its inherent behavior, including its propensity to burst."

Three transportation systems in surface coal mines: 1-Truck Haulage, 2-Belt Conveying, and 3-Coarse-Coal Slurry Transportation are compared from the operations and cost point of Views. Computerized design and cost models were developed and cost data banks were compiled for each system. These models can be used to evaluate transportation systems and layouts that are practiced in most of the U.S. surface coal mines. A typical midwestern area strip mine was considered for illustration purposes. Sensitivity analysis on critical parameters such as production rate, transportation, distance, etc. was conducted and the outcomes are presented.

During steelmaking, one important factor for production efficiency is the free opening of the ladle nozzle during continuous casting. Free opening occurs when the well filler sand and the steel flow freely when the slide gate is opened. Well filler sands are used for the slide gate of a ladle to separate the slide gate refractory and the molten steel. The well filler sand is partially sintered by the heat of the molten metal, which can result in the ladle nozzle failing to open if the sand is not sintered to an appropriate extent. It is therefore of great importance that the sintering behaviour of well filler sand is understood. We studied the effect of the well filler sand chemistry on its sintering properties. Samples of well filler sand with various chemical compositions were sintered in a high-temperature chamber furnace. Quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICPOES), and wavelength dispersive spectrometry (WDS) by electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) were used to analyse the various well filler sand mixes. Points of analysis were indicated on backscattered electron (BSE) micrographs. Quantitative element mapping was undertaken by energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). Thermodynamic calculations in FactSage predicted the percentage liquid phase present for the various well filler sand compositions at equilibrium conditions. The results of this work show that the degree of sintering of chromite-silica well filler sand depends strongly on the silica content. The amount of liquid phase formed increases with increasing silica content.

This paper describing the operations of the Cresson mine of the Cresson Consolidated Gold Mining & Milling Co. at Cripple Creek, Colorado, is one of a series of papers on mining methods and costs being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Cresson has recently been the most, important mine in the Cripple Creed district. During 1932 and 1933 an average of 230 tons of new ore (excluding dump material) that averaged about $10 in gold was shipped daily; 150 to 175 men were employed. Stoping was by the shrinkage method exclusively. The ore was screened washed, and hand-sorted at the surface and shipped to the Golden Cycle mill at Colorado Springs for treatment. A considerable proportion of the production was made by lessees working under the so-called "split-check" system. Among its investigations into the prevention of waste in production and use of oil and gas, the Bureau of dines has made considerable study of the efficient utilization of gasoline and by-product distillates in motors, this being done chiefly by measuring and analyzing the exhaust gases therefrom. A number of reports3 of a highly practical nature have been published and are available on this subject. The results of these tests have shown that the average motor vehicle wastes approximately 30 per cent of the heat value of the fuel used, as incomplete combustion products - carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and methane, These unnecessary large heat losses are mainly due to improper carburetor adjustment, and by proper¬ly adjusting the carburetors for maximum power and efficiency a large part of this heat loss can be eliminated. This in turn results in an increased mileage per gallon of fuel used.4

Nuclear gauging is used world-wide in almost every industry. From mining and ore-grading to finished product, the metallurgical industry is one of the biggest users of nuclear sensors for inventory, process control, and quality assurance. This paper will discuss the basic theory of gamma transmission gauging techniques found useful in mining, milling and metal production. Techniques to be discussed are gamma transmission for level and density. A major new technique will also be discussed. This technique is called gamma backscatter. The uniqueness of this technology, how to apply and the differences between transmission and backscatter will be accentuated.

GENERAL Location of Property THE Stirling zinc-lead-copper deposit is in Richmond county, Cape Breton, about a quarter of a mile southwest from Stirling P.O., and some 45 miles southwest from Sydney. The property is accessible by road for at least nine months of the year, and during the navigation period coastal boats maintain a service touching at the port of Fourchu, eleven miles from the mine. When flying conditions permit, the Cape Breton Flying Club, of Sydney, will carry passengers to or from the property, a service which has been particularly advantageous on two occasions when hospitalization was urgently required. The Company has mining rights on leases Nos. 73-74, 78-80, and 101-104, inclusive, and owns 166 acres at Stirling and one acre at Fourchu. The ore deposit is in lease No. 73. History The Stirling deposit was discovered in the 'nineties', probably about 1895. The original discovery is said to have been made in the bed of Copper creek, which traverses the ore-zone. For a number of years, indifferent development work was carried on with a view to copper production only, and it was not until1915-16 that attention was directed to the possible production of zinc. Previously, the ore had been considered too complex for metallurgical treatment. During the period 1916-24 several operators attempted to develop the property, among them being the Stirling Exploration Company, Stirling Mining & Smelting Company, New Jersey Zinc Company of New York, Hayden & Stone Company of Boston, and The Eastern Mining & Milling Company. Up to 1924, the work was limited mainly to trenching, stripping, ? diamond drilling, and shot drilling.

In a study of the principal factors affecting the transport of coal-water mixtures through a centrifugal pump and a pipeline, the interrelation between solids concentration, velocity, and pressure drop was established for a bituminous lump coal (minus 2 inch) in concentrations up to 48 weight-percent. An optimum concentration was found to exist for maximum capacity of a given pipe-line, and for minimum energy requirements per ton of coal. Coal size degradation by particle fracture took place in the pump; abrasion and attrition to form fines took place in both pump and line. A novel system of studying flow of solid-liquid mixtures in pipelines by the determination of relative sound intensities was developed.
