The principal activities of the Bureau of Mines Explosives Research Center (now Safety Research Center) during fiscal year 1968 (July 1, 1967, to June 30, 1968) are reviewed in part 1. Part 2 presents short abstracts of the publications issued during this period in the Bureau series and in other media. Part 3 describes a short study on the thermal decomposition of RDX and HMX not destined for publication elsewhere. THE copper-nickel sulfide ore deposits of the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited contain the minerals pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. In the extraction of the nickel, copper, and iron, much of the processing involves oxidation of the metals as well as sulfur. Roasting plays a predominant role at several stages in the operations which prepare the constituent metals for refining. Copper, nickel and iron concentrates of various grades, ranging from low-grade nickeliferous pyrrhotite to high-grade nickel sulfide, must be partially or completely oxidized. Figure 1 shows the main points at which roasting is conducted at INCO. Roasting experience at INCO dates back to the time when lump ore was partially roasted in heaps. It has progressed through single hearth roasters, sinter machines, multiple-hearth roasters, flash roasters, and more recently has centered on the development and utilization of fluid bed roasters. "La connaissance des contraintes naturelles qui prévalent dans les massifs rocheux est un prérequis indispensable pour la conception sécuritaire et économique des excavations comme on en retrouve dans les exploitations minières souterraines. Certains chercheurs se sont attardés à colliger les résultats de mesures de ces contraintes et les ont utilisés pour produire des modèles de prédiction basés sur leur traitement statistique. Ces modèles de prédiction sont très populaires auprès des exploitants miniers puisqu’ils permettent, du moins dans les étapes préliminaires de design, d’obtenir de façon s’apéconomique mais approximative, une partie des paramètres dont ils ont besoin. Dans le cadre d’un projet initié en 1994 avec la collaboration de l’IRSST, il a été décidé de produire un modèle de prédiction englobant une partie de la zone périphérique de la faille de Cadillac, soit une zone plus restreinte que le Bouclier Canadien utilisé jusqu’ici comme région pour l’élaboration de tels modèles. Pour produire ce modèle de nouvelles données obtenues avec une technique permettant d’exercer un excellent contrôle de qualité ont été ajoutées à celles déjà disponibles. Une telle régionalisation des données de base permet d’obtenir un modèle où les intensités et les orientations des contraintes principales sont beaucoup moins dispersées que ce que rapportent les modèles publiés jusqu’à ce jour. Enfin, il est démontré que le modèle proposé pour la région étudiée est en toute probabilité plus sécuritaire que les modèles plus généraux publiés à ce jour. Knowledge of the in situ state of stress existing in a rock mass is essential to the safe and economical design of underground mining excavations. Prediction models have been published, based on the statistical treatment of stress measurement results. Such prediction models are very popular among mine operators because they allow them, at least at a preliminary design stage, to economically obtain part of the information needed, even if this information is approximative. In 1994, a research project financed by IRSST was initiated aiming to produce a prediction model that would comprise a peripheral zone around the Cadillac fault. This region is more confined than the Canadian Shield on which the existing prediction models have been based up to now. In order to produce such a model, existing stress measurement results have been used in conjunction with new stress measurements that have been performed based on a technique which allows full control of the quality of the measurements. Restricting the data upon which the model is based to a more specific region gives a model in which the intensities and the orientations of principal stresses are far less scattered than the results published to date. Finally, it is shown that the proposed model is probably safer for the studied region than the models previously published."

The degree and manner of packing of bulk materials influences all phases of their loading, such as by a front end loader or a dragline, and their mechanics of flow, such as through a binhopper or an ore pass. The most important quantity in analyzing the handling of a bulk material is its shear strength which depends primarily on the same parameters as those that determine the packing state. Some of these are size, size distribution, moisture content, particle shape, particle orientation, and cohesion. The variables that affect the packing state arc vibration, pressure, intensity of deposition, velocity of deposition, and, when the material is confined, container used. The analysis of packing by a number of investigators has been done almost entirely with spherical particles. Most of these studies have dealt with monosized spheres. There is scant information on particles with angular shapes. Since most of the investigations by far have been concerned with ceramics and powder metallurgy, the particle sizes and ranges of size distribution have been small compared to those generally found in mining after fragmentation.

Coal pillar design has been based on generalized formulas of the strength of the coal in a pillar and experience in localized situations. Stress measurements above and in coal pillars indicate that the actual strength and deformation of pillars vary much more than predicted by formulas. This variation is due to failure of strata surrounding coal. The pillar strength and deformation of the adjacent roadways is a function of failure in the coal and the strata about the coal. When the pillar is viewed as a system in which failure also occurs inthe strata rather than the coal only, the wide range of pillar strength characteristics found in the United Kingdom, United States, Republic of South Africa, Australia, People's Republic of China, Japan, and other countries are simply variations due to different strata-coal combinations, not different coal strengths. This paper presents the measured range of pillar strength characteristics and explains the reasons. Methods to design pillar layouts with regard to the potential strength variations due to the strata strength characteristics surrounding the seam are also presented.

Central to Newmont Gold's Mine planning system is the ability to interactively perform cut and fill operations on topographic contours and to accurately evaluate grades and tonnages within contour outlines using polygon set manipulation routines. This paper develops the applied geometry concepts that underlie these routines. Included are representation of volumes with contours, point in polygon test, block proportion in polygon calculation, polygon area and centroid calculation, and intersection, union, and complement between polygon sets.

The inherent heating value or the amount of heat that will be produced when a coal is completely burned is measured in British thermal units (B. t. u.) per pound of coal . This standard heat unit is the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 pound of water 1 °F . at about 60 °F . The amount of inherent heat is determined by burning a small quantity of the coal in a heat meter or calorimeter , which gives results in British thermal units . The exact manner of making this test is standardized by the American Society for Testing Materials.4/ The value so determined is the total heat developed by complete burning, with all the products of combustion cooled down to the temperature of the calorimeter . The calorimeter is kept at about room temperature . This total heat is sometimes called the " high" or gross heat value , because it includes the latent heat given up by the water vapor in the products of combustion when the vapor condenses to water in the calorimeter . The heat as measured is reported as the heat of combustion at constant volume , since the burning is carried out in a tightly closed calorimeter chamber whose volume does not change . In actual use , coal is usually burned in an open - end chamber at constant pressure , generally somewhere near atmospheric . As the heat of combustion of coal at constant pressure is very slightly higher than the heat of combustion at constant volume , it might be considered that the heat at constant pressure should be used as the standard reference base . For an ordinary eastern coal the heat at constant pressure is about 16 B. t . u. per pound higher than the heat at constant volume . Calorimeter corrections , ordinarily not considered , that could have been subtracted from the heating value before reporting , may amount to about as much . Hence , the value reported is apt to be more nearly the true heating value at constant pressure than at constant volume .

Steel props are a type of standing support utilized in coal mines to support mine roof. In addition to the vertical roof loading, sometimes the steel props are subjected to lateral loading of spalled ribs. To enhance the safety of mine workers, the performance characteristics of the steel prop was studied under different scenarios of vertical and lateral loadings. Quik Stik props were used for use in this study. A uniaxial compression loading test was conducted for the Quik Stik prop assembly (inner and outer tubes, ball bearings, collar) to investigate the loading mechanism of the prop. Rupture tests were conducted for the inner and outer steel tubes of the Quik Stik props to estimate the yielding strength of the steel tubes. Nine Quik Stik props of 8-ft high were tested using the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh research facility. Three props were tested under vertical loading to measure the vertical loading capacity of the props. Six props were tested under lateral loadings with low and high roof-to-floor convergences to measure the lateral loading capacity and the retained vertical loading capacity of the props during lateral loading. Vertical loading tests showed that the tested props could be classified as yieldable supports with a stable load capacity of about 110 kips to 140 kips. Lateral loading tests showed that the vertical load capacities of the tested props were diminished because of applying lateral loads, and the props behaved as nonyielding supports with a maximum lateral load capacity of about 8.5 kips to 9.5 kips at stable lateral displacement up to 3 inches.

ABOUT thirty miles south of the port of Coquimbo, Chile, nestling in one of the western outliers of the main Andes range, lies the little mining town of Andacollo, a place whose history and traditions make up one of the most romantic pages in the life story of this southern republic. The beginning of Andacollo is shrouded in the penumbra of the pre-Columbian era, but its first mining activity probably dates from about the years 1440 to 1460. It was in the middle of the fifteenth century that the Inca Tupac-Yupanqui, grandfather of Atahualpa, conquered this part of Chile. His domain extended even as far south as the present site of Santiago, and perhaps farther, but was maintained with increasing difficulty against the fiercely independent and indomitable tribes of Araucanian Indians of the South.

The resurgence of severe lung disease among US coal miners since the mid-1990s has led to efforts to better characterize and monitor respirable dust exposures, particularly focusing on mineral constituents from rock strata surrounding the coal. A rapid analysis method for silica (quartz) mass using direct-on-filter Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy has been developed, which can also estimate kaolinite, a primary silicate mineral in many coal mines.

The presence of clay minerals slows down the settling rate and mitigates compact consolidation efficiency in tailings dewatering. The increasing use of saline water in many plants, affects the dewatering performance and presents the mining industry with new concerns. Efficient tailings dewatering is a great challenge due to the complexity character of tailings, especially clay mineralogy, clay content, and water chemistry. In this study, existing studies of the effect of different affecting parameters, such as pH, ionic strength and polymer flocculants, on clay aggregation behaviours are reviewed. The settling behaviours of three types of commonly observed clay minerals in tailings, kaolinite, bentonite, and illite, are also investigated in saline water with different water salinity as a case study. The settling rates of clay minerals are found to be affected by water salinity, clay type, clay content and polymer dosage levels. High salinity water hinders the settling of kaolinite but assists the settling of bentonite and illite through formation of different aggregation structures.The current work has indicated that strategies to promote more rapid dewatering could include adjusting flocculant type or level, water salinity and salt balance, and tailings solid content levels. Implementing dewatering strategies may require a more detailed knowledge of the effect of surface chemistry on the nature and strength of the clay inter-particle forces. This study discusses the research gaps on how to better manage clay-rich tailings in saline water and identifies new research directions. The development of a water management model, supported through in-line monitoring data to predict and manipulate of the surface chemistry of the clay component of the tailings could be a new direction to manage the issues associated with clay minerals in the process of dewatering and tailings management. Mine planning (water use requirements, operating costs) could benefit from more detailed studies on dewatering of clay-rich tailings in saline water. CITATION:Liu, D, Edraki, M and Berry, L, 2018. EXPLORATION for deep-seated orebodies in the Silver Belt area of the Coeur d'Alene mining district is complicated by meager surface expressions of diagnostic criteria, lack of knowledge of the significance of specific alteration phenomena, and the great expense involved in the exploration for ore shoots, the tops of which often occur near sea level elevation or below and as much as 4000 ft or more below the surface. Except for the early studies of Ransome and Calkins in 1903 and 1904,[1] little geological work was done in the Coeur d'Alene district for many years, and it is only during the last 15 to 20 years that complete and careful geological mapping has been applied to most of the mines in the area. Much early information, which now would prove invaluable, is lost in hundreds of miles of caved and inaccessible mine openings not mapped by mining geologists. In more recent years mining geology has become a tool of greater use in the district, and some measurable progress is being made in the accumulation of observations that are adding gradually to the knowledge of ore deposits in the district.

This report shows the feasibility of predicting drillability, analytically, by using regression analysis techniques. The approach is new in diamond-drilling research. Further, the study shows that this technique may be of value to drill manufacturers and others in mathematically delineating performance characteristics of new drills in specific rock types. Another application might be the prediction of penetration speeds in extraterrestrial material based on the physical properties of the materials as samples become available. Prediction equations for penetration rates are presented for 9 rocks drilled in the laboratory and for 20 rocks drilled under field conditions. The prediction equations are based on drill operating parameters and on characteristics of the rock penetrated. No single physical property appeared consistently in the best predictor equations, and all the physical properties were found to be highly correlated with each other.

As part of a general review of processing double refractory ores through Barrick GoldÆs autoclaves /carbon-in-leach (CIL) facility at Goldstrike, a study was made to evaluate the use of surfactants for reducing the loss of gold during cyanide leaching of preg-robbing gold ores. Consistent improvement of gold recovery was observed with surfactants at various testing conditions. Oceanic subduction-related volcanic frontal arcs extend over 20 000 km within the western Pacific basin and over 21 500 km worldwide, yet they remain largely unexplored with respect to active seafloor mineralization. Systematic exploration of 26 major submarine volcanoes along ~840 km of the Kermadec arc northeast of New Zealand has documented ten (39 per cent) as being hydrothermally active. This frequency of venting is comparable to that on slow-to-moderate rate spreading mid-ocean ridges, which comprise ~80 per cent of the 60 000 km-long global system of spreading centers. The chemistry of fluids discharged from the Kermadec arc volcanoes is moderated by magmatic components in both the gaseous (CO2 + SO2-H2S) and liquid (Fe) phases at very high concentration.The high frequency of venting coupled with chemically rich discharge discovered during this first systematic survey of any arc system forecasts submarine arcs as being important sources of chemicals to the oceans and as potentially lucrative exploration sites for seafloor mineralization. The exploration protocols developed during these surveys include bathymetric mapping of mostly unknown volcanic edifices, followed by detailed water column profiling and sampling to detect and characterize volcanic fluid emission signatures. These procedures are being refined as the survey progresses, both for efficiency and as direct seafloor observations become available for predictive application of water column plume information to guide seafloor mineral exploration.

Approximately 42 t of mercury were produced from Puhipuhi from the late nineteenth century until the end of World War II, with no significant gold or silver production. Sinter, eruption breccias and veins, mined for mercury at Puhipuhi and essentially barren of gold, are inferred in many geological models to represent the surficial levels of adularia-sericite style low sulfidation gold-silver systems. These systems may contain economic gold-silver mineralisation at depth. Conceptual geological models have been employed at Puhipuhi in the search for buried gold mineralisation. Homestake Mining utilised a McLaughlin model for exploration from 1982 to 1987, targeting mainly the vicinity of the sinter deposits. From 1987 to 1989 BHP sought deeper structurally controlled gold mineralisation within the basement greywackes, utilising models derived from studies of Round Mountain, USA and Hishikari, Japan. Macraes Mining Company Limited have accessed the previous work and applied a conceptual geological which invokes a north-south structural control for the emplacement of high-level felsic intrusions at depth. Dextral movement on these structures associated with oblique convergence facilitated the formation of a pull-apart basin in which lacustrine sediments overlie basement greywackes and are in tum overlain by Pliocene basalts. Continued activation of the NS structures created a series of inferred NE-trending dilational structures, which are targeted as fluid upflow centres for the surficial outflows. Upflows occur as eruption breccias (e.g., Plumduff) and outflow as silica sinters (eg Mt Mitchell, Williams) which are also partly obscured by the basalt cover. Argillic alteration and mercury mineralisation occur at elevated crustal levels (eg Puhipuhi mine). Modelling from structure and alteration zonations have targeted a fluid upflow in the vicinity of Bush Hill, which was not accessed by previous workers. This target was subsequently supported by surface geology and multi-element soil geochemistry.

The primary function of a support slurry is to provide stability during excavation. Today foundation structures can be designed around the additional friction afforded by the absence of the filter cake attributable to the use of polymeric fluids as support slurries. These fluids use pseudoplastic fluid viscosity to advantage over the fragile thixotropic gel structures of bentonite. Many of today's polymeric fluids are environmentally acceptable for disposal directly to municipal sewers.

Static tests give a measure of the balance between acid-producing and acid-neutralising mineral components in a material, while kinetic tests determine acid generation and neutralisation over a long period. Drill-core samples from the amphibolite and gneiss host rocks of the Stratoni lead-zinc sulphide deposit in Greece and mine/mill waste samples from Stratoni and Olympias were examined by the standard acid base accounting, BCR and net acid production tests. Mineralogical data on the materials and resulting residues were used to illustrate the differences between the methods and establish their ranges of applicability. BCR seems to simulate most closely the conditions prevailing during generation of acid mine drainage but is time-consuming and requires elaborate equipment. In mineral processing, poor froth-flotation performance translates into both an enormous loss of revenue and an unnecessary waste of the ore reserve. In this context, Bacís Mining Company developed a versatile new, high-performance flotation-cell design that can be incorporated into various flotation circuits. The main feature of this circular cell is that it is comprised of two separate sections, namely, a flotation cell that uses wash water to minimize the entrainment of fine gangue particles into the froth product and an external bubble generator that produces small bubbles of relatively uniform size at a specified aeration-rate. The air/water mixture is blended with the pulp by gentle agitation, so as to enhance particle-bubble aggregate-stability. Comparative metallurgical performance with conventional flotation cells show that the power requirements and operating costs for precious metal flotation are three times lower, while the concentrate grade is 7% higher and the recoveries of precious metals are 5% higher.

BROADLY, Yukon is divisible into three physiographic provinces which are extensions of the similar divisions in British Columbia that are there known as the Coastal system, the Interior system, and the Rocky Mountain system. South of Yukon to about the 50th parallel of latitude, the Coastal system consists solely of the Coast range, which, in Yukon, passes behind the St. Elias range and for the remainder of its course constitutes the most easterly portion of the Coastal system. The extension, in Yukon, of the Interior system of plateaus and mountains of British Columbia is commonly referred to as the Yukon plateau, and the extension of the Rocky Mountain system as the Mackenzie Mountains system. The Coast-Range province is largely made up of granitic intrusives; the Mackenzie Mountains province of folded sediments; and the intervening Yukon Plateau province of ancient metamorphic rocks, folded sedimentary rocks, volcanics, and intrusives. Almost the entire area dealt with in this article was subjected to glaciation and, in those parts where its full effect was experienced, the valleys were invaded by vast masses of ice which transported and scattered the stream gravels, with their gold content, so that, even where gold still remains in the old stream channels, it has become so buried under boulder clay and other glacial accumulations that it is, in most places, difficult to find, and, when found, may prove very expensive to mine. Most of the present rivers have done little more than cut new channels in the glacial debris, touching only here and there upon the subjacent rocky floor. The territory in Yukon adjacent to the section of the Alaska highway between Watson and Teslin lakes is for the most part unknown both topographically and geologically. From Teslin to Kluane, the highway travels a fairly well-mapped part of Yukon, but beyond that point, until White river is reached, the geology of the adjacent country has, largely, yet to be determined, particularly on the north side of the highway.
