"Construction works at the Helsinki city sea shoreline requires dredging and handling of contaminated sediments. Most of these soft dredged sediments are regarded as too poor quality material for earth construction purposes. Mass stabilization technology has been applied to improve the technical and environmental properties of the dredged sediment in order to utilize the material in construction. The treatment site presented in this article is placed in the West Harbor where the dredged sediments are disposed in basins, mixed with binders by mass stabilization and transported to utilization sites. The volume of these basins is about 90 000 m3. So far these basins have been used three times during the years 2011-2014. The most applied binder has been cement. Its high price and carbon footprint have encouraged use alternative binders. Other used binder materials include fly ash and end product of desulphurization from coal combustion, and fly ash from combustion of Estonian oil shale. The technical and environmental properties of stabilized sediments have been studies in the laboratory and in situ thoroughly. Some properties of the stabilized sediments which have been studied are: compression strength, modulus, hydraulic conductivity, leaching of contaminants, etc. The leaching test results show that heavy metal leaching is very low with all binder materials tested.1. INTRODUCTIONContaminated marine sedimentsMarine sediments in the coastal areas are often contaminated as a consequence of industrial and port activities, as well as the influence of cities located there. Construction activities and reclamation of shore line require dredging and handling of contaminated sediments since the level of contamination inhibit dumping of dredged sediments into the sea. Based on their technical properties, most of these dredged soft and watery sediments (clay, gyttja, etc.) are regarded as too poor quality material for earth construction purposes. Economic, sustainable and environmentally safe management of contaminated, dredged sediments is a key issue in many construction sites.In the City of Helsinki, mass stabilization technology has been applied to improve the technical properties of the dredged sediments in order to utilize the material in construction. Owing to stabilization / deep mixing / solidification, also the contamination is encapsulated in a monolithic solid of a high structural integrity. Thus, contaminants migration is restricted by the decreased surface area exposed to leaching.The treatment site presented in this article is placed in the West Harbor (a place of Helsinki called Jätkäsaari) where dredged sediments are disposed into stabilization basins, mixed with binders by mass stabilization and then transported to final utilization sites. The location and principle of these basins is presented in Figures 1-4. The overall volume of these four stabilization basins is about 90 000 m3."

"The piles often are also subjected to lateral (horizontal) forces and moments. In fact, there are some structures where the primary function of piles is to transfer lateral loads to the ground. Proper analysis of laterally loaded piles is very important to the geotechnical and civil engineering profession.In the present investigation an experimental study has been carried out with free head short model cast iron hollow piles of outer diameter of 24 mm and L/d ratios of 8, 10, and 15. The experimental results have been supplemented by numerical techniques using PLAXIS-3D Foundation version 2.1 software. The results have been found to agree reasonably well with the experimental results. Further finite difference approach has been adoptedto reduce the computational time and to calculate the coefficient of modulus of subgrade reaction (?h) from the load- deflection data obtained from PLAXIS output at different pile depths. The parametric study has been extended for the non-dimensional form defined as flexibility ratio (F.R.),where ?h, L, Ep and Ip are the coefficient of modulus of sub-grade reaction, the embeddedlength of model pile, elastic modulus of pile material and the moment of inertia of model pile about the central axis respectively).The variation of coefficient of horizontal modulus of sub-grade reaction (?h) has been studied with respect to the following parameters for homogeneous soil system: relative density andL/d ratio. It has been found that the logarithm of flexibility ratio increases with increase inrelative density and increase inL/d Ratio. The values of ?h obtained by the proposed method have been, found to be close to the numerical results.As output of this research, graphs have been generated in respect of different parametric variations to gain an insight into behavior of piles under lateral load for short piles."

This report presents findings from a Bureau of Mines study on barriers that may prevent miners from correcting and avoiding groundfall hazards. Such barriers stem from four basic types of problems: (1) inability to recognize groundfall hazards, (2) inability to correct groundfall hazards, (3) lack of motivation to search for groundfall hazards, and (4) lack of motivation to correct groundfall hazards. Data are presented that summarize the views of miners, section supervisors, and mine inspectors about the contribution of these barriers to groundfall accidents and what they think should be done to reduce the frequency of injuries sustained by falls of roof and rib. The report also includes a summary of miners' responses concerning their recent experiences with groundfall accidents, along with industrywide statistics on accidents and injuries caused by ground falls in underground coal mines.

The mining industry is constantly taking greater cognisance of their operating costs as a strategy to counter the effects of falling commodity prices. As a result, optimal operating efficiency is more important than ever. One such operation is that of blasting. Considering the relative increasing costs of explosives and accessories it is desirable to optimise the number of blast-holes fired by maximising their individual output. This achievement may now only be possible following the advent of higher technologies in the form of modified explosives and electronic detonators. This paper reviews and introduces some techniques of blast monitoring, types of operations where each is most suited, resulting modifications to blast designs, and identifies some pitfalls to watch out for when analysing the results.

ALTHOUGH the earliest use of rubber-tired haulage was in Illinois in 1936, the first unit of this type of equipment used in West Virginia was shipped into the state in 1938. All units placed in West Virginia mines have been of the shuttle-car type. The Katherine Coal Mining Co., at Lumberport, W. Va., was the second company in the United States to install shuttle cars and the Gay Coal and' Coke Co., at [ ] Mt. Gay, W. Va., was the first company in the country to install the thin-bed type of shuttle car. On Oct. 8, 1940, nine companies in the state were using 41 shuttle cars, of which 10 cars at three mines were of the thin-bed type. All shuttle cars of the low type were in the southern fields and all of the high type were in northern West Virginia. At that time several units were in the process of delivery. The data in this paper were collected in the field by Mr. Schroder in connection with graduate work on mechanical loading of coal in West Virginia by mobile loaders. In the course of his field work he visited five mines in the state that were using shuttle cars. All of these mines were in high-volatile coal beds of strong structure. [ ] The more pertinent data obtained at the mines visited are given in Table I. The maximum distance of shuttle-car haul is the distance between the transfer station and the farthermost place. Tonnage per loading unit per foot of bed thickness is to some degree a measure of relative efficiency, especially if the different operations are working the same bed or have somewhat similar conditions. Cathodic Protection using impressed current was employed to reduce the wear of the mill wall during ball mill grinding. Wear rates were determined from weight-loss measurements made on four, I-inch diameter, mild steel coupons installed flush with the interior surface of the mill wall. Grinding tests were conducted on quartz, pyrite and quartz-pyrite mixtures at pH values of 4.6, 7.1 and 9.2. Cathodic protection was shown to reduce mill wear by 40-60010. An examination of the coupon surfaces using scanning electron microscopy showed that cathodic protection greatly reduced pitting corrosion. The presence of a sulfide mineral, such as pyrite, was found to increase the wear rate significantly, possibly due to galvanic interactions. It is also found that the wear rate is significantly higher than the sum of abrasive wear and the corrosive wear, due to a synergistic effect.

Major-element data for unaltered, unmineralized felsic host rocks from a number of stratigraphically simple, massive volcanogenic Zn-Cu(-Pb) sulphide deposits of low metamorphic grade have been compiled. The petrochemical affinities of these host rocks have been determined (by standard means and by discriminant analysis) and compared. This comparison indicates that volcanogenic deposits in felsic terrains are not restricted to the classical calc-alkaline rock association as previously thought, but can actually be hosted by rocks showing a range of iron content. There is a positive correlation between differentiation trend and are tenor. Zn-Cu ores usually have iron-rich felsic hosts (most Canadian Shield deposits); Pb-Zn -Cu ores have iron-poor felsic hosts (Japanese, Iberian and Tasmanian deposits). This parallels the antipathetic relationship between iron content and background lead levels evident in young, unmineralized, island arcs as well as in many older belts. Correlations between differentiation trend on one hand and massive ore mineralogy and the relative proportions of various rock type (including rhyolite, quartz-porphyry and coarse pyroclastic rocks) on the other are also evident. It is concluded that the recognition of a calc-alkaline differentiation trend cannot be used as a prospecting guide, as has previously been proposed. However, in view of the above correlations, the recognition of a given trend may aid in the formulation of an effective exploration philosophy.

This report compares the quality of zirconium metal prepared by batch reduction of zirconium tetrachloride by (1) sodium, (2) magnesium, and (3) mixtures of sodium and magnesium. Criteria for quality are based on chemical analyses and hardness testing of zirconium arc-melted from sponge. The best quality zirconium with respect to low oxygen content and hardness numbers was prepared by reaction of zirconium tetrachloride with a mixture of sodium and magnesium. It was found that this reaction could be successfully carried out by two methods: (1) addition of sodium and magnesium before the initial reaction and (2) periodic injection of sodium during reaction of zirconium tetrachloride with magnesium. The largest quantity of metal was found to be recovered from experiments in which a mixture of sodium and magnesium was used. Magnesium appeared to be a better reductant than sodium because magnesium-reduced zirconium contained less oxygen and exhibited lower hardness numbers than sodium-reduced metal.

The use of electronic detonators in civil tunnelling applications, to reduce vibration in small firings has been successfully utilised for a number of years. As part of the mining industry’s commitment to reducing blast damage during the development cycle in underground mining applications, a series of development blasts using e-Dev™ electronic detonators in a typical mining application was conducted at Resolute’s Mt Wright operations in North Queensland in 2010. Results were based on direct comparisons to the current industry standard of non-electric firings as a baseline, with as many parameters as possible being captured during the trial. Development costs are typically high in most underground mines, especially in capital development headings, which are in waste and therefore of no direct economic value, so by being able to accurately fire to design, costs relating to both ground support requirements and volume of material removed, (and therefore haulage required) can be minimised. A direct comparison of overbreak (ground blasted outside of design) and cast (distance rock thrown from blast) was also made during the trial, as well as close monitoring of the drilling accuracy.

Low-temperature heat capacities and the enthalpy of formation were deter-mined calorimetrically by the Bureau of Mines for CuO?CuS04. The derived standard entropy (S°298.15) was 40.36±0.04 cal/deg-mole, and the enthalpy of formation (?H°f) was -219.l±0.3 kcal/g-mole. A large thermal anomaly was observed in the heat capacity of CuO?CuS04 at 20±0.1 K. Gibbs energy of formation data are tabulated up to 1,200 K. Construction details of a precision low-temperature adiabatic calorimeter capable of determining heat capacities of solids in the temperature range 5 to 320 K are given. A calibrated miniature germanium resistance thermometer was incorporated into the calorimeter to extend the range of accurate measurements below 15 K. High-resistance dc heater windings were used throughout the cryostat to reduce heat conduction of inner connecting wires.

"Ore sorting has been quite successful in providing a separation means in the rock size range of 1 to 6 inches; a range where mineral dressers do not have many options. The industrial minerals and recycling worlds have embraced this technology. However, ore sorting has not found wide application in the base or precious metals mining industry. One reason for this is thought to be the reliance of most sensors on rock surface characteristics, not very useful in case of sulphides, non-existing in case of gold. Microwave heating, however, is specific for sulphides and graphite (or carbonaceous matter) embedded in the rocks; washing or even drying does not appear necessary. Separation can be done afterwards by already existing ore sorting technology using infrared sensors. Test results on six Nevada gold ore samples are presented in detail. Some simple test procedures are also presented for those wishing to explore the microwave potential of sulphide sorting in their own operations.INTRODUCTIONMineral processing in the base metals industry most often involves upgrading of the ore, concentrating the valuable mineral fraction by classic methods, such as flotation. Since the liberation of minerals in the ore occurs mostly at or below the 100 micron level, the industry has been living with fault lines, so to speak, between blast hole spacing (10,000 mm), run-of-mine ore size (100 mm) and beneficiation size (0.1 – 0.01 mm). The acceptance of ore sorting will inevitably lead to the revisiting of the following questions: “Exactly how much below ore grade rock ends up in the mill because the geologists or the miners cannot define the resource boundaries more precisely? How can the economics of dilution be improved? How many ore grade rocks are lost with the overburden?”"

Environmental incidents involving mine tailings and waste rock inevitably become highly publicised and serve to damage the credibility of the entire industry. The recent serious incident involving a spill from a Romanian mine, was blamed for triggering æone of the worst environmental catastrophes in Eastern EuropeÆ. It is important to clearly demonstrate to the general public that these incidents are not representative of the industry as a whole. Where such incidents have occurred, the causes are generally related to poor design and/or construction, inadequate supervision and/or monitoring and maintenance, lack of independent expertise, inadequate risk identification and treatment and no provision to ensure that rehabilitation and long term management of the site occurs. Many people are unaware that these issues have been considered and provided for at the Martha Mine. Despite the fact that the first tailings storage facility has performed very well over fifteen years of operation, the long term safety and security of the tailings storage facilities continues to be questioned and debated by the public. The best way to address this is to provide quality information to enable a better understanding amongst the general public.

"This paper presents the final wall blasting practices at Eldorado Kisladag Gold Mine in Turkey. Benchmark and improved wall control designs were explained in detail. Kisladag Mine has been implementing a high quality slope stability program on-site. The quality of pit walls is generally considered excellent, with very few wall failures being evident and with presplit hole barrels prominent in most areas of the pit. However, a minor scale slope failure occurred recently at the north-east section the pit. A project was initiated to diagnose the cause of the crest loss and evaluate ways to limit its effect on final walls. Final wall blasting practices and geotechnical designs were evaluated. The work presented in this paper showed that changes to the blasting and geotechnical parameters are required atthe north-east section of the pit. Geotechnical design changes were 10 m bench heights with 70 ° slope face angle at that specific area. Having implemented several geotechnical and blast design changes (elimination of the subdrill for the catch bench, appropriate primer location, more favorable blast tie-up and delays), the crest loss was minimized significantly (<1.5 m) (<5 ft)."

The question of the formation of sulfate in the roasting of zinc is mainly one of temperature and the concentration of S02 and S03 in the gases. We found we could roast almost completely to sulfate if the concentration was kept at the proper point. We, however, did not care to do this because we wished to make a 5 to 6 per cent. S02 gas for sulfuric-acid work. The sulfating of the zinc oxide in the proper concentration of gases goes on very rapidly. Hydrolyzable surfactants such as fatty acids and amines undergo, in addition to micellisation and precipitation, various associative interactions in aqueous solutions to form ion molecular complexes such as acid-soap, dimers etc. depending upon the solution conditions such as pH. The interaction of these collector species with the mineral surface and with other dissolved species in solution will play a significant role in determining the interfacial processes such as adsorption and flotation. Marked differences in the hydrophobicity imparted to the mineral surface depending upon the solution conditions such as Ph can be attributed to possible differences in surface activities of the above complexes. This aspect of solution chemistry of flotation systems is discussed here for two widely used collectors namely, oleic acid and dodecylamine. Equilibrium species distribution diagrams based on the available literature .data and on estimates of energy of interactions between molecules, have been obtained for oleic acid and dodecylamine solutions.

"During the year which has passed since the last progress report on reduction of zinc by natural gas,3 the laboratory experiments on this investigation have been completed. In this concluding report, the whole subject will be reviewed and additional data presented.Chemical ReactionsIn a thermodynamic study of zinc smelting, Maier 4 discussed the use of methane for reducing zinc oxide, and predicted equilibria at various temperatures for the sore important reactions. The study has been extended to include the following list.Maier predicted that 870°C. would be the critical temperature above which reaction (1) would take precedence over reaction (2) and that reaction (1) at equilibria would be substantially complete at or above 927°C. A subsequent papers described experimental verification of these predictions and gave data on reaction rates under various conditions.It methane is passed through a heated bed of zinc oxide at a low enough rate reactions (1), (3), and (4) reach an equilibrium which can be expressed by reaction (10). The equilibrium concentrations for the products of this reaction in the temperature range 900° to 1100°C. were calculated by applying the thermodynamic constants to the stoichiometric relations. 6 The results of these calculations are listed in table 1 and shown graphically in figures 1, A and B. These data have major importance, and experimental work has shown that they are subtantially correct."

STRIKING new developments in the field of industrial minerals include the employment of lime, salt, coal, and air for the manufacture of stockings, and the substitution of paper for granite and marble in making tombstones. Certain minerals that have heretofore been regarded as valueless except as museum or laboratory specimens, are now being applied commercially. Serpentine, in forms neither fibrous nor ornamental, massive topaz, pinite, and zoisite are examples. For certain other minerals, notably pyrophyllite, bentonite, vermiculite, and sulphur, extension of established uses into new fields has occurred. Substitution takes a toll in many industries, but producers of industrial minerals as a class have gained more than they have lost in recent years. Encouraging progress has been made in developing at long last a suitable substitute for certain of the uses of mica, the only industrial mineral on the strategic list of commodities established by the War. and Navy Munitions Board. The paper explores the substance, circumstances and significance of the Whelpley and Storer Copper Process. The 1866 Whelpley and Storer patent specified a process combining mechanical and chemical engineering. The process called for a down-drafting shaft furnace with a horizontal flue connected at the bottom of the shaft. Powdered sulphide ore was roasted in the shaft and then sent forward fully oxidized to a bath of sulphuric acid and/or calcium chloride. The “water furnace” was developed in Boston, at a time when the city was home to most Michigan copper mining companies. The process was field-tested at Quebec’s Harvey Hill copper mine. In 1865 James Douglas, Jr. took over management of the Harvey Hill mine with the challenge of saving the family investment. He needed a way to make money from low-grade sulphides. Through his relationship with chemist T. Sterry Hunt, Douglas learned of a possible way ahead using the process developed by Whelpley and Storer. The paper confirms the centrality of publications, meetings, and networking in the advancement of metallurgy. The process is of interest historically, as much as anything, because it is one of the pillars of James Douglas’ distinguished career in copper. INTRODUCTION At the 1866 meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Buffalo, New York, T. Sterry Hunt (1826–1892) read a paper “On the Metallurgical System of Messrs. Whelpley and Storer.” The paper is part of a chain of events that constitute the foundation of James Douglas’ (1837–1918) success in the copper mining industry. To understand the career of Douglas over the early years of modern copper mining, we must necessarily start with Whelpley and Storer. Going back to Hunt’s paper, he concluded his remarks by asserting that the Whelpley and Storer Process was “capable of such wide and varied application, that it is probably destined to have a very important influence on the industry of the world” (Hunt, 1867a). He reached this conclusion reasoning that the process had overcome a critical metallurgical hurdle (Hunt, 1867a). Hunt, a geo-chemist in modern terms, recalled that the chemist of those years easily separated copper from “sulphuretted” ores by converting it to a soluble salt from which pure metal was precipitated by “an equivalent of iron.” The problem was to “…apply this principle in the working of copper ores on a great scale...” (Hunt, 1867a). Hunt noted that this very problem had “…engaged the attention of many metallurgists, and has given rise to various processes for obtaining copper by the moist way, many of which are nearly or quite perfect in their operation, but are lacking in practicability and cheapness” (Hunt, 1867a). Hunt thought Whelpley and Storer had overcome the low-grade sulphide hurdle with a commercially viable engineering breakthrough. Yet in the history of copper metallurgy, the process is missing. ALTHOUGH most persons will agree that an individual or a nation can profit from the experience of other individuals or nations, there is always room for debate over the degree of similarity of their past and present conditions and of their future problems. Noting the increasing interest that Americans are showing in our mineral problems, I have felt that we could profit from reviews of the experiences in mineral exploitation acquired by the industrial nations of Europe. Whether we can learn much from Europe&apos;s experience in exploiting such minerals as petroleum may be debatable, but certainly, with a record of metal production extending back nearly 3000 years, Europe should hold much of value for America. A trip to Europe in 1926 permitted me to visit 28 mining districts, of which about half are now or have been in times past outstanding sources of several metals. The districts range from England to Greece and from Spain to Poland. To summarize briefly my impressions of these mining districts, as well as such reactions to the thought and life of Europe as so short a visit permits, I shall only venture the opinion that Americans can review with great profit the ideas and actions of Europeans, with regard not only to the production of metals but to many expressions of life. I believe that America has made and is making new contributions to the art of living, as well as to the arts of mining and metallurgy, but in so far as Europe is and has been a laboratory of economic, social and political experiments, the results she has attained deserve the thoughtful attention of America. I have come to believe that many of the problems that harass Europe lie in our path not far ahead. I have therefore hoped that a review of metal production in Europe in the light of its geologic, economic and political background may serve to clear our vision with regard to our own metal production. One can not examine the literature of national metal production without being impressed that the countries of continental Europe, especially Germany and Austria, have shown greater interest and devoted more time to research into the record of metal production than Great

"High intensity dry magnetic separation is commonly employed to separate different para-magnetic minerals including mineral sand. Separation in these separators is majorly influenced by the combined effect of gravity, centrifugal and magnetic forces on a particle. These separators are included in the process flow-sheets either for pre-concentration purposes or for the beneficiation of paramagnetic minerals. Separation in these separators is majorly influenced by the difference in the magnetic susceptibility of the associated minerals, particle size and shape along with the process variables of the machine. Particle size is one of the major parameter that plays an important role and decides its probability of selectivity under the magnetic field. However, effect of particle size on the performance of these separators are not well understood which is evident from the literature.In the present investigation, an effort is made to bring out the effect of particle size on particle separation in an induced roll magnetic separator while treating ilmenite fines. Effects of operating parameters, such as; magnetic field intensity, roll speed, feed rate and splitter position have been studied and their influence on particle size has been analysed in terms of yield (wt.%) to magnetic product, particle size distribution characteristics in terms of D50 and D80 size, skewness, kurtosis. Also, the particle size distribution of each test was fitted in Rosin-Rammler equation. The test results were analysed statistically to understand and quantify the influence of each variable on particle separation. It is found that, rotor speed of the separator had maximum influence on yield to the magnetic product whereas splitter position had major influence on D50 and D80 (µm) size of the product."
