Powder metallurgy processing of commercial Raney nickel powders was examined. The typical angular particle shape, in conjuction with aluminum present in a eutectic phase, facilitated interlocking leading to excellent green strength after compaction. Density and porosity as influenced by the compacting pressure were studied over the range of 37.5 to 207 meganewton per square meter (MN/m2). Sintering in an inert atmosphere from 575° to 850° C caused a volume increase which is attributed to a solid state reaction between Al and Ni2Al3 phases. The reaction is 3Al + Ni2Al3 ? 2NiA13. A thermal pretreatment of 70 hours at 700° C was required to prevent this reaction from occurring during sintering. Density and porosity as a function of compacting pressure and sintering temperature were determined after a thermal pretreatment of the powder.

Each year, haul truck accidents account for a large portion of mining injuries and fatalities. To better understand why these accidents continue to occur, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) utilized a cognitive task analysis methodology to identify the user requirements of surface haul truck operators and assess differences in perceptions between operators, managers, health and safety professionals, trainers, and maintenance personnel. Additionally, researchers used the critical decision method to focus on better understanding the cognitive demands, decision-making, and problem solving during nonroutine incidents. The preliminary results of this study identify and explore themes within the broad categories of hazards, skills & expertise, and training and provide detailed accounts of nonroutine incidents such as near-misses, loss of control, and collisions. These accounts reveal insights into operator decision making and event progressions that can then be used to build more realistic training scenarios and address hidden hazards and root causes of these incidents. These results, along with potential solutions offered by study participants, can inform future research and help identify creative interventions that can be used by mine operators to address haul truck safety issues

In this study, zeta potential and contact angle measurements of pyrite before and after interacting with Thiobacillus ferrooxidans are carried out to investigate the changes in its surface properties. The results show that, after pyrite interacting with Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and its metabolite, the surface electricity of pyrite changes obviously, resulting in a notable shifting of isoelectric point to lower pH value, but the contact angle varies little. Bacterial protein plays the most important role in the interaction. This work is helpful to disclose the mechanisms of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans de-pressing pyrite flotability.

An original application of ANSYS simulated the forming of the temperature field of a massive casting from ductile cast-iron during the application various methods of its cooling using chills. The numerical model managed to optimize more than one method of cooling but, in addition to that, provided serious results for the successive model of structural and chemical heterogeneity, and so it also contributes to influencing the pouring structure. The file containing the acquired results from both models brings new and, simultaneously, remarkable findings of causal relationships between the structural and chemical heterogeneity and the local solidification time in any point of the casting. The determined relations therefore enable the prediction of the face density of the spheroids of graphite in dependence on the local solidification time. The calculated temperature field of 500x500x1000 mm casting of ductile cast-iron with various methods of cooling has successfully been compared with temperatures obtained experimentally. The SAG mill at Rasp Mine has undergone a number of liner design modifications since commissioning in 2012, making liner wear and failure difficult to predict from historical data. During 2017, several instances of liner failure or near failure were experienced resulting in unplanned downtime for emergency relines or to patch liners in the lead up to a planned shutdown. The strategy for relining mills is often to minimise the frequency of relines (and subsequent shutdown costs) by extending liner life, achieved through design modifications. However, it was observed that as the Rasp SAG mill liners wear, mill performance declined with power draw increasing and throughput declining. Opportunity and inefficiency costs start to erode the revenue per additional tonne milled for a given set of liners, and in turn the benefit of delaying relines. As such, optimising the frequency of relines becomes a trade-off between reline costs and opportunity/inefficiency costs in delaying relines. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate a frame work for analysing costs using a marginal economic analysis with the assumption that the Law of Diminishing Returns can be applied to the life of mill liners. The SAG mill operating variables can be modelled to determine their impact on costs and an optimal reline point can be defined where the total costs are minimised. This prevents unexpected failures due to accelerated wear by providing justification to reline earlier and thereby allowing efforts to be focused on sustaining milling performance.CITATION:Standen, C M, 2018. Information technology (IT) initiatives in the past have tended to be sold on their ability to maximize resource output and return on capital by using assets more effectively and efficiently. Many IT projects fail, not delivering return on their investment. This is known in the IT industry as the ?productivity paradox,? where increasing investments in IT do not result in comparable increases in productivity. Experiences and studies of most business sectors reveal that this paradox is rooted in the false assumption that more IT spending automatically results in financial benefit, whereas the true source of benefits is in how effectively IT is used. Most business sectors have accepted that the reengineering of processes is required to gain the full benefits promised of IT. A mining operation has organizational processes similar to most business sectors but unique operational processes. The lessons of changing business practice in more common business processes such as inventory control and customer-supplier relationships can be adequately transposed into a mine. The unique operational processes in mines, in turn require unique redesign efforts. Several enabling information technology opportunities have recently become available, such as more integrated mine production management systems and tactical manger training simulators. This paper reviews the latest IT products and ou lines the processes and kinds of change that will be required in order to benefit from these new investment options.

"An extensive mixed-mode fracture toughness testing programme was conducted on coal from three coal fields. A special mixed-mode testing fixture for coal and other geologic materials was developed together with reliable specimen preparation procedures. Dynamic modulus measurements made on each of the 116 fracture toughness specimens showed that these coals exhibit certain degrees of anisotropy. The fracture toughness testing programme systematically varied the loading rate, specimen orientation and fracture loading mode. Loading rate did not significantly effect the fracture toughness over the quasi-static range tested. Orientation did have a significant effect on measured fracture toughness. In the coals tested, the divider orientation and arrester orientation had higher fracture toughness than the short transverse orientation. Data showed that one orientation could have almost twice the fracture toughness as another. The fracture toughness testing enabled certain evaluations of three mixed-mode fracture theories: maximum tangential stress, maximum energy release rate and strain energy density theory. Due to the extreme heterogeneity of the coals tested, definitive conclusions regarding the best mixed-mode fracture theory are not possible; however, data do tend to support the strain energy density theory. INTRODUCTIONThe major aim of this research is to ·develop a fundamental understanding of how fine· fragments of coal (respirable dust) are generated during a fracture process. In a related paper [l], a hypothesis was presented for the mechanism of fine fragment formation during a generic coal material/cutting tool interaction. In this hypothesis, fine fragments are created during coal material/cutting tool interactions that are best described as general mixed-mode fracture processes. Data are required on the mixed-mode fracture behaviour of coal, the physical character of the newly-created fracture surfaces and the character of the inherent flaw structure of the coal material. Accordingly, a test programme was designed that provided some information in each of these areas. The testing effort seeks to measure critical fracture toughness under mixed-mode loadings as a material parameter characterizing in part the tendency of various coals to generate undesirable quantities of fines and respirable dust."

O tempo médio de um incêndio foi estimado fazendo-se um levantamento de incêndios de média a grandes proporções e esse tempo usado para calcular a temperatura média do incêndio para materiais hidrocarbonetos. O tubo tem sua temperatura limitada em 200ºC, temperatura de degradação do polímero. As amostras foram envelhecidas no forno a uma temperatura próxima da deterioração e depois resfriadas à água e ao ar. Foi comprovado através da análise da transferência de calor que quanto mais perto o material estiver da fonte de calor, maior vai ser a energia incidente sobre o material. O estudo foi feito considerando uma fonte pontual de calor. Além disso, é feita uma análise do tempo que uma estrutura feita do mesmo material levaria para atingir a temperatura de degradação, descartando seu uso posterior.

BEFORE going into detail on the subject to be presented, a brief outline of the Company's earl y history would not be out of place. Prospecting and mining on a small scale was started in 1876 on the site of the present open pit at Thetford Mines. The property was purchased from the Crown in 1878 and Johnson's Company was incorporated in 1885. It is owned and operated today by descendants of the original shareholders. Many employees, through their fathers and grandfathers, have service records dating back three generations. The principal asbestos deposit at Thetford Mines is pear-shaped, with surface dimensions of about 2,200 feet in length by 1,300 feet in maximum . width. Its long axis strikes northeast and the dip is nearly vertical, but irregular in detail. It is known to extend to a depth 1,200 feet below the original surface, but its area at that depth has not been determined. Ownership of this deposit is divided among three active Companies: the Asbestos Corporation, Limited; Bell Asbestos Mines, Limited; and John-son's Company. Johnson's Company owns a section about 1,000 feet in length and 500 feet in width, bounded on the northeast by the King mine of the Asbestos Corporation and on the northwest by the Bell pit. On Johnson ground, there was originally a large outcrop o~ asbestos rock which dipped toward the south below overburden. This was mined until recently by open pit, the overburden being stripped off as far southward from the original outcrop as was economically possible. As the. pit was deepened, within side walls maintained at a maximum safe slope, its floor area, of course, became progressively smaller, and eventually the pit would have wedged out against the Bell property line. It became necessary, there-fore, to introduce some other method of mining before production became seriously curtailed by a shrinkage of the pit area.

"Iron ore sintering process is the main source of SO2 generated in the steel industry, of which the discharge amount of SO2 emission accounts for about 60% of the total. Aiming at the features of sintering flue gases and existing problems during the flue gas desulphurization, a technical route of flue gas circulation sintering (FGCS) for iron ores has been put forward. Under the simulated experimental conditions, effects of FGCS process on the main output and quality indexes and SO2 emission rule are researched using simulating flue gases. Compared the novel FGCS with conventional sintering process, SO2 in the final sintering flue gas is obviously enriched and the total exhaust gases can be reduced evidently. The decreasing of oxygen content in circulating gases has bad effect on the sintering indexes. Increasing the oxygen potential is beneficial to obtain high quality sinters. This investigation shows that the FGCS process is promising.IntroductionSteel is a kind of essential material for modern society, but steel-making process is characterized by high energy-consumption and emission as well as heavy environmental pollution. Chinese steel industry has developed rapidly in the last decade, and the environmental problem caused by ironmaking and steelmaking have also aroused the greatest concern, especially the atmospheric pollution caused by SO2, CO2, etc. Iron ore sintering process is the main source of SO2 generated in the steel industry, of which the discharge amount of SO2 emission accounts for about 60 % of the total. The development of the desulfurization process for sintering flue gases to reduce SO2 emission in sintering process is not only the requirements of sustainable development but also the most important environmental tasks for steel industry [1-5]."

In this report commercial blasting compounds are classified according to their nitroglycerin (or equivalent explosive oil) and ammonium nitrate content as dynamites, gelatins, blasting agents, military explosives, and blasting , accessories. The ingredients and more significant properties of each explosive are tabulated and briefly discussed. Data are summarized from various handbooks, textbooks, and manufacturers' technical data sheets, together with the author's personal experience; however, this report is not intended to be a technical handbook, since it does not deal with blasting techniques. Instead, it seeks to acquaint the reader with the great variety of explosives, available, their advantages and disadvantages, and their general areas of application. Properties discussed are weight strength, cartridge strength, detonation velocity, density, detonation pressure, water resistance, and fume class. The weakness of the strength rating system and the importance of detonation pres- , sure, density, and detonation velocity in rating explosives are discussed. The terms "blasting agent" and "slurry," which are often misused, are defined. Trends indicate that blasting agents (that is, blasting mixtures with none of of the ingredients singly classified as an explosive), particularly high-density slurry blasting agents, will dominate the explosives field in the future.

A MARKED peculiarity of most of the smelting-works of the Far West is the looseness with which accounts of the operations are kept. Indeed, probably over half of the works do not keep any detailed accounts at all, the yearly gross statement of profit or loss being considered sufficient for all purposes. The reasons for this must apparently be sought in the as yet unsettled state of all business relations, and in the deplorable fact that only in isolated cases educated metallurgists are in charge of the smelting-works. Continual and regular assays of the ores, by-products, and slags, are almost unknown, so that it is impracticable to ascertain, even approximately, the losses in the smelting processes. Of cases where regular accounts are kept of the quantities of ore smelted, of the composition of charges, and of the fuel consumed, I know only two or three. Under these circumstances it is extremely difficult to collect figures which cover the operations for a considerable length of time, and which are so valuable for the metallurgist, who wishes to get an insight into the economy of smelting operations, as shown by practice. Figures obtained by personal observation, which can of course cover only the brief space of the visit of the travelling metallurgist, must, therefore, be made to replace the more valuable data. The writer has had occasion, during the last and the preceding summer, to visit the larger number of the Western lead-smelting works, and offers, in the following pages, such data relating to the economy of lead-smelting in the blast furnace at various works, as he has been able to obtain. The only object in doing so is to place these figures on record, so that they may be from time to time supplemented with other data, which are now wanting. I. Scale physical models, constructed according to the principle of similarity theory, have been widely used to simulate the mining disturbances to surrounding strata and to evaluate the effectiveness of implemented ground control techniques. This technique has also been used for studying mining-induced surface and subsurface subsidence. The movements of the observation points installed on the physical model at different mining stages are currently measured using total station which is time-consuming and inaccurate especially on small scale models. A photogrammetry-based measurement system has been developed. During a physical modeling process, photos of the model can be taken during the simulation process reducing survey time from hours to a few seconds. A program, Photogrammetry Analysis for Physical Modeling of Mine Subsidence Process (PAPMMSP), developed based on photogrammetric principle is used to quickly identify the installed observation points and accurately determine their coordinates. The measurement accuracy is well under submillimeter level—an ultra-important advantage as any measurement errors in coordinates are magnified by the model dimension scale (commonly 20 to 400). A physical modeling case of subsurface strata movements and deformations associated with longwall mining operations is presented in the paper to demonstrate the functions and capabilities of the developed photogrammetry program.

"L'objectif principal recherché lors du broyage d 'un minerai est de libérer adéquatement ses valeurs utiles en vue de leur concentration ultérieure. La pratique courante consiste à tenter d'obtenir un produit de broyage d'une granulométrie constante. Malheureusement, les propriétés texturales des minéraux utiles varient naturellement dans un gisement et une telle stratégie n'entraine pas toujours pour ces minéraux un degré de libération constant. Pour un rendement optimal du procédé de concentration, cette variable très importante doit donc être périodiquement vérifiée.Jusqu'à maintenant, la plupart des études de libération des minerais se font en examinant des sections polies de particules du minerai broyé. Le GRAAIM a récemment assemblé un système modulaire d'analyse d'images qui servira en grande partie à des mesures automatiques du degré de libération des minéraux. Le système s'avère relativement peu coûteux comparativement à la plupart des analyseurs de texture conventionnels si l'on considère que plusieurs de ses composantes, par exemple le miniordinateur, sont utilisées à une foule d'autres applications, et il permet de plus une grande souplesse d'utilisation puisque l'on a qu'à construire des algorithmes de mesure et de calcul en fonction de l'objectif recherché. Des programmes particuliers permettant des études automatiques de libération sur des sections polies de particules ont ainsi été élaborés. Ils permettent également des mesures de teneurs et de distributions granulométriques apparentes des particules. Des résultats obtenus dans le cas de minerais de fer sont brièvement présentés afin d'illustrer la technique."

Malmberget is a sublevel caving mine owned and operated by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB), a Swedish state-owned iron ore mining company, in northern Sweden. The mine has an annual iron ore production of approximately 15 Mtpa. The current strategy foresees an expansion which will increase the mine’s depth considerably. Ventilation and air conditioning modelling for the planned expansion is ongoing. One of the most influential parameters for ventilation planning anddesign for a deep mine is geothermal gradient, which is crucial for the design of the refrigeration system. It is determined through virgin rock temperature (VRT) measurements carried out at various depth below the surface. This paper details these measurements and the determination of geothermal gradient for Malmberget Mine for the expansion study, which were necessitated by thelack of information for the focus depth and area.

Galvanic corrosion between dissimilar materials, such as steel and graphite, leads to safety concerns for many industries, including mining. In this study, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) analyzed rock samples from two mines in the United States that exhibit electrochemical properties similar to graphite through laboratory measurements to investigate their observed in-situ influence on underground metal support. Uniform corrosion rates of mild steel coupons, inflatable bolt coupons, and friction bolt coupons galvanically coupled to rock samples were obtained using both potentiodynamic polarization and zero resistance ammetry. Increased uniform corrosion rates were witnessed between the coupled rock and steel system, over those of just the steel alone. Surface analysis of the metal samples showed the presence of pitting corrosion, reflective of bolt samples removed from partner mines. Corrosion pitting of ground support structures in contact with graphitic rock in underground mines poses safety concerns for mine workers by increasing the rate of corrosion and decreasing bolt strength over time and will be further investigated for intervention strategies.

"Russia is among the nations holding the world's largest lithium ore reserves. Lithium is of key importance for the global economy. Therefore, it is important to review the current state of technology research aimed at finding the most effective solutions for the recovery of lithium from promising reserves in Russia. In Russia, a number of process solutions for the flotation of spodumene into salable concentrate (5% Li2O) have been implemented at the earlier existing complex low-grade ore concentration project. By applying these solutions, a sample of high-grade spodumene ore (4.7% Li2O) of the Greenbushes deposit was processed into a spodumene concentrate (7.5% Li2O) at a high recovery (~93%) of lithium. In Australia and Canada, new processes have been developed for the recovery of high-grade spodumene concentrates from high-grade ores using dense medium separation and flotation. For the recovery of mica lithium concentrates from low-grade ore, a flotation process was developed in Russia using the cationic collector ANP-2 and Oxifos-B as an additional collector. Low-grade ore containing 0.14% of lithium oxide was processed into a 2.7% Li2O concentrate. New hydrometallurgical lithium concentrate and ore processes are developed to avoid high-temperature (>1000 °C) roasting. The Sileach process (Australia) includes leaching of lithium ore with sulfuric acid in the presence of a halogen-containing component at a temperature of 95-115 °C. In the Russian process, lithium is recovered into an alkaline solution from low-grade spodumene ore in a pressure alkaline leaching environment (250 °C, NaOH concentration > 300 g/l). The developed concentration and hydrometallurgical methods will allow to design on their basis efficient processes for recovering salable products for hi-tech industries from lithium ores.INTRODUCTION Lithium has many unique and important properties. It is the least dense hard metal. Its alloys have some of the highest strength-to-weight ratios. Lithium has the lowest melting point of all known solid elements and is used as a highly-effective heat transfer medium. The high demand for lithium is due primarily to its unique electrochemical potential and low thermal expansion coefficient. It is used in the production of glass and ceramics, in petrochemicals, metals, medical and other industries. Since the late 20th century, the electronics industry has been the largest consumer of lithium. In recent years, lithium has attracted much attention also as an important component of ultra-lightweight electronic devices. It is also the preferred metal for electric batteries used in mobile electronic devices, vehicles, household power generators, making it an important resource for the development of environmentally friendly technology. Leading automotive brands have ambitious plans for the production of electric cars — Tesla Motors, VW, Toyota, GM, BYD Auto. It is expected that the production of electric vehicles alone will triple the demand for lithium by 2025. A sharp increase in the production of lithium is expected. "Natural deposits of sodium sulphate are the result of normal geological processes. They are world-wide in occurrence and are found in depressions in arid and semi-arid regions. Primarily, the sodium sulphate deposits of the prairies are post-glacial and differ from rock salt deposits, which originated from connate water (fossil sea-water). Sodium sulphate on the Canadian prairies occurs as brine or in beds of intermittent and/or permanent crystals. Most beds are contaminated with various amounts of silt, sand and decayed organic matter. Soluble impurities such as chlorides, carbonates and bicarbonates of sodium and sulphates of magnesium and calcium are leached out from the soil of the surrounding run-off area of the deposits.In this paper, the origin of sodium sulphate, and the physical and chemical aspects related to the development of the Ingebrigt Lake deposit are dealt with. The problems of garnering raw material, and of refining and de-hydration are discussed, with emphasis on the Ingebrigt Lake plant. The utilization of the ""Total Power Concept"" in a sodium sulphate plant is described. The principal uses of sodium sulphate are also discussed."

A commercially available Halon 1301 extinguisher has been evaluated as part of an explosion-suppression system for use in coal mines. Studies were made both of the dispersion pattern of the Halon 1301 at an initial pressure of 280 psig, and of the efficacy of this suppressant against 9.5 percent methane-air flames. These flames were quenched successfully only when the suppressant was applied before the fireball diameter exceeded 18 inches.

Comminution is a vital part of minerals extraction, and therefore of the South African economy. The high cost and throughput-limiting nature of comminution forms a strong motivation for research directed at improving the efficiency of the process. Building on a ten year background of fundamental charge motion research, a new formal UCT flotation and communication group has been formed. The group is also moving strongly into the field of milling circuit modelling and simulation, based on close links formed with the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) of Australia, and an international collaborative research programme.
