This report describes the study of factors which affect medium voltage (661 - 1000 volts) trailing cable splices used in underground coal mines. Improvements in quality, dependability, and design of splice kits and shop splices are presented in the study results and recommended guidelines and regulations. Recommended research programs are included which describe approaches for development of the recommended guidelines and regulations for medium voltage trailing cable splices. The basis for the conclusions and recommendations presented in this report is included in three appendices which describe a survey, splice examination, and general requirements development prepared during the progress of this study.

The problem of corrosion of reinforcement in concrete structures is internationally recognized and represents the single biggest expenditure in the preservation of steel reinforced concrete structures. While the corrosion protection of the reinforcing steel is no substitute for design and the placement of good quality concrete, it does provide for a viable and economical extension of structural integrity and service life in the day-to-day and practical environment in which concrete structures are constructed. The mechanism of corrosion attack and consequent deterioration of reinforced concrete structures is well understood and documented. New structures can be designed and built to withstand corrosion. However, due to short-term economic restraints, many new reinforced concrete structures continue to suffer as a result of corrosion damage, which results from the corrosion of the steel reinforcing. This paper explores the economic and practical benefits offered by the application of hot dip galvanizing as a viable means of protecting reinforcing steel concrete structures. The paper also discusses technical misconceptions that exist about application and performance provided by the use of hot dip galvanized reinforcing steel.

Fur a secure mineral supply position to be maintained in the Fiuropean Community there must be a supply of qualified people in the minerals industries. The education of the people required to run and develop these industries should be a priority in the community. This means that there should be a strong capability in mining engineering education. The mining engineering professors decided in 1990 to get together in a new Society to discuss the problems. The Society of Mining Professors/Societat der Berg-baukunde was formed at a meeting in Austria in October 1990. It is basically a F.uropean Society with a few member professors from outside Europe to keep the Society conversant with trends elsewhere. The objectives of the Society are to see that the mining universities in Fiurope maintain standards and produce enough mining engineers. The present membership of the Society and the work of developing a database of current courses is described. Working from the knowledge base developed, it will be possible to design a 'European' mining degree course. The problems which will have to be addressed have been identified and are described in detail.The paper finally goes on to discuss the other problems that universities are facing, the economic problems and above all the lack of students applying for mining courses across Europe. The help and active participation of the mining industry, if that industry still wishes to employ mining engineers, is identified as the only possible solution to those problems.

Research on modern hydrothermal systems provides quantitative measures of the processes of formation of hydrothermal fluids and of precipitation mechanisms from them. Studies of ancient deposits provide new information regarding volcanological processes that are related to the deposits, as well as data on their spatial and temporal compositional variations. Mew exploration guidelines result from both aspects of research. The most fundamental requirement for large metalliferous hydrothermal systems is an abundant heat supply for the upper two kilometers of the crust. This heat may come from a focused heal source (shallow-level subvolcanic intrusion), but ambient heat also may have provided enough energy for the reactions necessary to effect leaching of metals, especially where heat flow is particularly high (i.e. very large or high-temperature magmatic source, such as ultramafic environments). For most VMS systems, the majority of the metals were derived through leaching from footwall strata; in addition interstratal fluids may enter subvolcanic intrusions during episodes of magma a chamber "cracking," engendering some '?magmatic" component in the hydrothermal system. Direct contributions of metalliferous magmatic fluid also may be significant from arc-related or back-arc felsic or alkalis systems. These latter contributions may form exceptionally high - grade portions in some deposits. Subvolcanic intrusions, which are excellent indicators of high heat flow and may have been the direct driving mechanisms for some stems undergo two stages of alteration: On intrusion emplacernent. fluids may rapidly enter and react with their mesostatic portions, evident in the sills in the Middle Valley. High temperature interactions caused albitization and destruction of oxides and sulfides, releasing metals. During terminal hydrothermal stages, the metalliferous fluid collapsed into the intrusions, forming disseminated and vein sulfides.

According to the temporal and spatial distribution of regional metallogenesis, thePacific Rim can be divided into four global metallogenetic systems. The Asia-Australia W-Sn metallogenetic belt is the typical representative of intracontinental metallogenetic systems. This belt resulted from Mesozoic and partly pre-Mesozoic tectonic magmatism, mainly related to S-type granite of crustal source that was generated by collisional orogeny combined with oceanic subduction in intracontinental and continental margin settings. Based on the concept of metallogenetic series, there is a group of mineralised ore types showing a definite spatial and temporal distribution from endogenetic to exogenetic. These metallogenetic series are widely distributed in the Asia-Australia W-Sn metallogenetic belt, and are well developed in Southeast China. Five metallogenetic series and two petro-minerogenesis evolution models have been established according to their tectonic settings, various types of granitoids and metallogenetic evolution.

GOLD-BEARING ores, representing many types, are found widely distributed through the Province of British Columbia. They range from those which by their nature may be considered as complex, to those whose mineral characteristics are simple. Those in which the gold is associated with metallic sulphides provide particular milling and metallurgical problems, the solution of which involves not only detailed laboratory investigation but also a careful consideration of economic factors. The location of an ore-body may have a deciding influence on the adoption of a method for the metallurgical treatment. Whether the ore should be treated with the object of recovering the gold as bullion or as a shipping concentrate is often dependent on such topographical considerations as the position of the mine at or near tidewater or within a reasonable overland distance of a smelter. British Columbia is fortunate in having the Trail smelter situated in the southern part of the Province, and the smelter at Tacoma, Washington, is accessible for coastwise traffic. Both of these provide a ready market for most types of gold-bearing concentrate. In order that the results obtained by laboratory tests may give a fair indication of what should follow in mill operation, it is essential that the test sample should represent as closely as possible in mineralogical character and in grade the ore that eventually will constitute the feed to the mill. In the early stages of mine development this consideration is sometimes overlooked and samples of a much higher grade than would be representative of run-of-mine ore are submitted. Flotation tests on such a sample of ore high in sulphides may show a low ratio of concentration, bu.t if the actual run-of-mine ore is lower in sulphides the mill operation will reveal a much higher ratio. The recommendations for treatment based on the results of laboratory tests may have been against concentration, when in actual operation this would be the most suitable method of treatment. Recommendations based on laboratory tests are necessarily from the results of work carried out on the sample submitted, modified only by such other economic or topographical information as may be known to the investigator. This paper deals with a few of the gold ores found in the six mining districts of British Columbia and is based on investigations made in the Ore Dressing and Metallurgical Laboratories of the Mines Branch, Department of Mines, Ottawa.

Electrical ad thermal-conductivity measurements have been made on titanium and 6 titanium alloys. The following expression was derived for calculating thermal conductivity from electrical conductivity: K = 0.626 s T x 10-8 + 0.00497 where K = thermal conductivity, cal sec-1 cm-2 cm0C-1 s = electrical conductivity, ohm-]cm-1 T = temperature, deg Kelvin This expression gives calculated thermal conductivities that are not in error by more than 10 pct from the experimental values for A-55 titanium and the 6 alloys measured; namely, A-110AT, C-110M, C-130AM, Ti-6A1-4V, Ti-140A, and Ti-155A, which are representative of the presently available commercial a and a-ß titanium alloys. THERMAL conduction in a gas, liquid, or amorphous solid is accomplished by energy diffusion from molecule to molecule, a relatively slow process. For this reason, such materials have a low thermal conductivity. When a material is crystalline, there is in addition a heat transfer by a vibratory motion of the crystal lattice. It is the contribution of this lattice conduction that makes a crystal a much better conductor than a gas, liquid, or amorphous solid. Lattice conduction, however, does not account for the relatively enormous thermal conductivity of a metal. This is explained by the freedom of movement of valence electrons. These valence electrons drift in a metal in a direction toward a drop in electrical potential and, to a lesser degree, in the direction of a temperature drop in the metal. Since both the electrical and thermal conductivities of a metal depend upon the presence of free electrons, there should be some relatively simple relation between the two. Wiedemann and Franz in 1653 first discovered an approximate empirical relation between the electrical and thermal conductivities of metals at the same temperature. This ratio varies appreciably with temperature, and Lorenz later showed that by adding a temperature factor to the Wiedemann-Franz ratio the value of K/(s T) is constant, where K is the thermal conductivity, a the electrical conductivity, and T the absolute temperature. This Lorenz constant shows a greater variation for alloys than it does for pure metals, the ratio increasing slightly as the proportion of alloying elements increases. It has been found that a closer correlation between electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity can be obtained by means of an equation of the form K - A s T + B [1] where A and B are constants. In this equation the term AsT is the contribution of electronic conduction and B is the contribution of lattice conduction to the total thermal conductivity. EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS Electrical-resistivity and thermal-conductivity measurements on titanium and 6 titanium alloys serve as the basis for determining an equation of the K = AsT + B type for titanium alloys. Specimens—Table I shows nominal compositions of the 7 metals on which electrical and thermal conductivities were measured. The electrical and thermal-conductivity specimens for each alloy were taken from stock of the same heat and usually from adjacent sections of the same bar. "Sampling may be mandatory for safety or environmental reasons. It may be because the value of a sale needs to be determined or to provide important data for investments. Whatever the reason, an incorrect sample will come at a risk. Only the person that relies on sampling data can imagine what the potential cost of such risk is.Sampling itself has a cost too; the direct cost of a quality control department and indirect cost for interrupting a process, such as stopping a conveyor belt during loading. If all material is the same then only one small sample is enough. But if all the material is different, then a very large sample must be tested; in the conveyor belt scenario it must be stopped very frequently and the associated cost will be high.A good sampling plan finds the proper balance between risk and cost. A good sample must be small enough to handle yet large enough to be representative for what information is required. All good samples have three things in common: there was proper access to the material the sampling tool allowed equal probability of particles being selected nothing was disregarded, everything was included.This too is the core of Gy’s ideal sampling scenario, where all particles have the same probability of being selected and included in the sample. There is risk of bias when part of a lot is excluded from the sample. Extra care is needed when sampling particularly heterogeneous, segregated or layered materials. The sampling tool should never systematically leave out a portion; it shall not push aside large or hard particles. Wet samples shall not stick to the sampling tool. Phase equilibria in the Ti-Mn-Mo system have been investigated in the composition range 100 to 60 pct Ti and in the temperature range 550 to 1150°C. Three out of ten isothermal sections are presented as well as seven vertical sections, projections of the beta space and the surface of incipient melting. A STUDY of the system Ti-Mn-Mo was undertaken as part of a program to aid in the development of titanium-base phase equilibrium diagrams of potential technical importance to alloy development. The scope of the investigation included the composition range 100 to 60 wt pct Ti (all compositions refer to weight percentages) and the temperature range 550" to 1150°C. A surface of incipient melting was constructed from measurements of a large number of alloys. In the binary system Ti-Mo,' the high temperature modification of titanium generally spoken of as the p phase is stabilized to successively lower temperatures with increasing alloy content. There are no known intermediate phases, and complete miscibility exists between body-centered cubic titanium and molybdenum. The u solid solution is limited to less than 0.8 pct Mo at temperatures between 885" and 600°C. An equilibrium diagram for the binary system Ti-Mn has been published.' Manganese behaves as a p stabilizer but undergoes a eutectoid transformation at about 20 pct Mn and 550°C to a plus an intermediate phase. The structure of this phase has been found to be isomorphous with the a phase FeCr." Accordingly, the phase is assigned the formula TiMn, although its actual location on the composition scale has not been determined and may well be not exactly at the equiatomic composition. In disagreement with ref. 2, the origin of the TiMn phase has been shown' to be a peritectoid transformation at a temperature between 900" and 1000°C. A second intermediate phase occurs at the atomic proportions TiMn,. The structure of this phase was originally established by Wallbaum" as having a hexagonal lattice (C 14 type, 12 atoms per unit cell) isomorphous with MgZn,. In this work, the structure determination was confirmed and lattice parameters determined to be: a = 4.815 kX, c - 7.901 kX. Because of the extensive range of the P phase, the ternary system was suited to the determination of the phase boundaries by the parametric method of Andersen and Jette." During the course of the investigation, this method was found applicable only to the P/a+P boundaries but not to P/P+ compound boundaries. Metallographic methods were used alternatively for delineating these phase boundaries. Preparation and Treatment of Alloys Over 70 alloys were prepared for the study of this system. Ten gram alloy buttons were arc melted in a nonconsumable electrode furnace using inert atmosphere protection, and a water cooled copper crucible. The construction and operation of this type of melting unit has been described.' To insure complete solution of alloy additions, especially molybdenum, the buttons were remelted alternately on top or bottom as many as five times. This was accomplished by a suitable mechanism for "flipping" the ingots over. It was very difficult to obtain homogeneous melts in the region of less than 75 pct Ti because of the very high melting point of molybdenum and Ti-Mo master alloys and the comparatively low boiling point of manganese. "Sampling in the mineral processing industry has always been a subject which has received considerable discussion. There have been many volumes written on theory, techniques and practical application of sampling. However, until recently, the companies were not completely aware of the potential savings available with properly designed sampling systems both to assist in pieces: control and final product values.Definition In our discussion today, we will define sampling as the operation of removing a part, convenient in quantity for analysis, from a whole, which is of much greater hulk, and removing it in such a way that the proportion and distribution of the quality to be tested, i.e. size of particle, moisture content, specific gravity content, mineral and chemical composition, are the same in both the sample and the whole.Application It has been well established that undetected errors can result in large economic losses, thus most firms depend upon some type of sampling and sample analysis as a control in their continuous processing of materials. Despite the large investment in facilities and personnel the ""analysis"" of a sample can be no more accurate or reliable than the sample on which it is being based. The importance of sampling is recognized by a great many but it is appreciated by only a few, largely because it is sometimes one of the items which is taken for granted."

Outotec has performed numerous research and development projects and various surveys in the study of reverse iron ore flotation. Over the past four years their TankCell-70 and TankCell-160 flotation cells at the Germano concentrator of Samarco in Brazil were extensively surveyed. These surveys have revealed some extreme operating conditions in reverse iron ore flotation and are the subject of this paper. Some of the findings include large variations in the content of solids in the various flotation stages. At the bottom of the cleaner cells, the content of solids by weight reached over 60 per cent, whereas at the bottom of the scavenger cell this was less than 50 per cent. Froth carry rates were also significantly different in the various flotation stages. In the case of coarse material, the scavenger cells operated at a froth carry rate of over 40 t/h.m2. With fine material, however, froth carry rates of less than 10 t/h.m2 were measured. High froth carry rates caused significant changes in the residence times at Samarco. In the rougher cells, the fifth cell had more than double the residence time of the first cell. This was even more pronounced with the scavenger cells, where the second cell had more than triple the residence time of the first cell. High froth carry rates also caused losses in iron recovery. As a consequence of such findings, it appears that different rules apply in the sizing of reverse flotation circuits compared to direct flotation circuits. Different operating parameters (mixing intensities and air flow rates) must also be used in the rougher, cleaner and scavenger cells in order to optimise the metallurgical performance. In the absence of any subsequent enactment of mining legislation, the Turkish mining law in effect in 1914, when Iraq became a British mandate, is still operative. The Constitution, or Organic Law, of Iraq, adopted by the Constituent Assembly on July 10, 1924, in articles 113 and 114, provides that:3 Ottoman en laws date and thao remained and lave pub- lished on or after that date and which have remained in force in Iraq u to the time of the publication of this law shall remain in force in Iraq' so far as circumstances permit, subject to any modi- fication or repeal in conformity with the proclamations, regula- tions, and laws referred to in the following article, and until they are altered or repealed by the legislative power or the High Court issues a decision rendering them null and void in accordance with the provisions of article 86. (Art. 113.) All proclamations, regulations, and laws by the Commander-in- Chief of His Britannic Majesty's Forces in Iraq, the Civil Commis- sioner, and the High Commissioner, and those issued by the Govern- ment of His Majesty King. Faisal, during the period between Novem- ber 5, 1914, and the date of the coming into force of this Consti- tution, shall be considered to be valid as from the date on which they came into force... In the exploitation of porphyry-type deposits, the quality of the ore is mostly defined according to its grade. Besides the simplest distinction, ore-waste, several grade categories may exist and they correspond to the different ways in which the ore is further processed. At the time of mining the selection of the different categories is done from extensive information available from blast holes. But planning has to be done before this information is available and it is necessary for the geologist to forecast, from exploration and development data alone, the possible outcome of the selection done later on a block, a level, or the whole deposit and ultimately predict the ore reserves and value of the deposit. A good statement of this problem has been presented at the 1976 AIME annual meeting by Williamson and Hueller (1976). They have shown that, if the cut-off values are directly applied to the estimated grade of blocks, a gross overestimation of the recovered tonnage of ore (14%) will occur. This problem, now termed "the vanishing tons problem" (DaVid, 1977) seems to be common in many open-pit operations and it has been explained several times (DaVid, 1972; Huijbregts, 1975). In order to solve it l.Jilliamson and Mueller proposed a solution based on compiling masses and masses of blast hole data available from mined-out portions of the deposit. They derived empirical correction factors which provide for every block, given its estimated grade, the expected tonnage and average -grade of each category of material within that block. The purpose of our work is to repeat the same exercise but ignoring the blast holes data i.e. we want to derive the correction factors from the only DOH data. Doing this, we are more in the real conditions where the valuation of the mine and are reserve analysis has to be made before production actually starts. "INTRODUCTION As a small amount of manganese was produced from the Lake Valley mining district of Sierra County, N. Mex., during the First World War, the district was reexamined in March 1941 by John H. East, Jr., an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, as a possible source of manganese for use during the Second World War. Preliminary examination indicated a substantial reserve of 25 percent ore, so it was recommended that an exploratory program of mapping and sampling be undertaken by the Bureau.The program was started in the fall of 1941 and was completed the middle of 1942. The project 3/ was divided into two parts: The first, an underground sampling program, formed the basis for the second, or churn-drilling program. Mapping and sampling of old underground workings were begun in October and finished in November 1941, whereas churn drilling was begun in February and completed in June 1942."

[The rapid expansion of the petroleum industry, the steadily growing use of oil fuel or steamships, the increasing transportation of oil in tankers and the extensive use of petroleum oils for many land industries, has resulted in pollution of our coastal eaters by these oils. On account of the great importance of this problem to the petroleum and shipping industries its, the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the American Petroleum Institute and -he American Steamship Owners Association has undertaken to ascertain the extend of petroleum oil pollution along the coasts of the United States and to indicated the principal so arcs of such pollution. Certain typical methods and devices in use and proposed for the separation of oil from water, and for the disposal of oily castes from ships and industrial plants have been studied. An attempt has also been made to point out the nature of the fire hazard resulting from oil pollution and to indicate the effect of such pollution on bathing beaches.]

Alberta Piling Contractors very rarely are required to perform major marine construction in the prairies, so it became as a big surprise to AGRA Foundations Limited to be invited by Transalta Utilities Corporation to bid on a major marine project for the Sundance Cooling Pond Expansion at Lake Wabamun, Alberta. Even more of a shock, the work had to be undertaken during Alberta's harsh winter conditions with temperatures plunging to -30 C. Not a happy situation for prairie construction workers to be in, working from barges in the middle of a lake in the dead of winter. However, it is well known that prairie boys make the best sailors.

"Inclusions are a type of ground improvement that provide an improvement of a soil mass by insertion of a material with better characteristics than the surrounding soils. There are primarily two types of inclusions: “Soft” inclusions which are constructed of granular material (Stone Columns, Rammed Aggregate Piers, VibroPiers...), and “rigid” inclusions which are constructed of grout inserted with or without pressure (VibroConcrete Columns, Controlled Modulus Columns, Soil Mixing Columns).While the central principle of the inclusions is similar (i.e., overall improvement of characteristics of the soil mass below the structure), the load transfer mechanism is radically different for each technique. Therefore, the applicable design methodology is specific to the type of inclusions and there exists no universal method of design which spans across all inclusions.This paper will present an in-depth comparison between the standard design methods used for “soft” granular-type inclusions (Priebe modified, Balaam & Booker, Goughnour & Bayuk...) and the methods used for “rigid” inclusions which mainly rely on finite element analysis. The paper will explain why the design for soft inclusion methods cannot be applied to rigid inclusions and vice-versa. Each design method will be reviewed in detail to better emphasize its limitations and advantages.Two case histories will also be presented; one for each type of inclusions in order to illustrate the concepts developed in the first part of the paper.1 INTRODUCTION1.1 GENERAL OVERVIEW OF GROUND IMPROVEMENT WITH INCLUSIONSThe use of ground improvement methods to provide the appropriate amount of foundation support is a growing and constantly evolving industry. Traditional structural foundation methods including ‘shallow’ and ‘deep’ foundations do not adequately address the wide range of settlement tolerances, soil conditions, and loading considerations inherent to each unique potential project. In some instances, ‘shallow’ foundation solutions are simply not feasible due to soil and loading constraints. Furthermore, ‘deep’ foundation solutions are used to ‘bridge’ the soft compressible soils, ensuring that the entirety of the load in the structure is transmitted through individual elements into competent layers below the ground surface (bedrock, dense residual soils). Highly concentrated structural loads are transferred into the individual elements by means of direct contact requiring the use of structurally rigid surficial components (structural slabs, grade beams, and pile caps).Ground improvement bridges the gap between these two traditional methods, offering adequate foundation support while using more costeffective techniques and design methodologies. Inclusions are a type of ground improvement used to provide a reinforcement of the soil mass through the vertical insertion of a material with better characteristics than the surrounding soils. Much like deep foundations, inclusions are installed through soil layers with high compressibility and/or low bearing capacity and terminated in a suitable bearing stratum. However, unlike deep foundations, ground improvement inclusions rely on a distribution of load between the soil and the inclusions. By doing so, some of the structural load is applied directly to the soil in a proportion equal to its bearing capacity and compressibility limits, while the rest of the load is shed into the vertical inclusions down to the bearing stratum. Load sharing is a critical aspect in the performance and design of the various ground improvement methods."

1. This investigation shows that the Poplar Creek is the most important bed in Scott County from a production standpoint. Although the Poplar Creek bed contains the largest reserve, the Big Mary has a larger recoverable reserve. Estimates of reserves also have been made for the Pewee, Red Ash, Windrock, Upper Pioneer, Jellico, and White Oak beds. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves of coal, based on a minimum bed thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 143 million tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 74 million tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

An improved methodology is presented for assessing the economic feasibility and effectiveness of recycling industrial waste. The methodology is based on the break-even control mechanism, but at the same time provides for the introduction of new evaluation criteria such as the threshold of conditionality and the degree of ore substitution. Based on an improved analysis, it becomes possible to more precisely predict recycling efficiency. A more refined determination of the lower limit of concentration of recoverable metals, at which technogenic waste can be assigned the status of secondary raw materials and processed profitably, leads to a significant expansion of the secondary raw material base suitable for recycling. The potential for recycling manganese-containing dust from the production of ferrosilicomanganese, dehydrated sludge from the hydro separation of slags, and cake from the production of electrolytic manganese dioxide at the Chiatura mining enterprise is used as an example. It is shown that with a threshold of –24% Mn content, the highest recycling efficiency can be achieved by the production of low-phosphorus manganese slag and conversion to ferrosilicomanganese using the above waste to replace 40-60% grade III and IV manganese concentrates in the feed.
