Economic investigations indicate that bituminous coal can be mined underground in the Uinta region and marketed at a cost competitive with that of other energy sources in the West. A selling price of $3.90 per ton of coal was calculated from a cost analysis of a projected coal mine in the Emery coal- field of Utah. Although mines in some of the coalfields have extremely difficult mining conditions and cannot compete in the energy market at this price level, at least two other coalfields in the Uinta region contain coal reserves that could be mined and sold at a price of approximately $3.90 per ton. Projections by power companies and other coal-consuming industries indicate a strong future market for the large coal reserves in the Uinta region.

After the explosion at Middelbult Colliery, South Africa in May1993, which claimed 53 lives, the South African Coal Mining Industry and the Safety In Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) united forces to establish a surface facility to develop and test on-board flame suppression systems for continuous miners and roadheaders. The first test that was conducted in this newly constructed test tunnel at the Kloppersbos Research Facility, CSIR was in July 1995.Since then 70 tests have been conducted using the facility and have focused on on-board active ignition suppression systems for continuous miners (CM) and road heading (RH) machines to enhance the safety of South African mine workers in collieries. These suppression systems are mounted on the CM or RH machine and detect the occurrence of an ignition by means of light-sensitive sensors. The electronic signal from the sensor triggers the suppression system, creating a flame-suppression curtain, containing and extinguishing the flame in the immediate vicinity of the ignition. Forty-three tests have been conducted with an active on-board suppression system present inside the test tunnel. Since flame propagation speed is an extremely important parameter, the CSIR-Miningtek made the results of the test programme available for re-analysis. Flame speed depended on whether a machine was present in the heading or not, the geometry of the heading and the volume and composition of the explosive mixture of gas. Flame speeds of up to 190 m/s were recorded. However, the active suppression systems were almost always successful in containing flame propagation.

In High Pressure Die Casting a molten metal is injected through a thin gate into the cast cavity. High injection pressures and high gate velocities create atomization phenomena which can negatively affect the final quality of the cast. In order to control atomization process it is essential to understand the atomization patterns and the two-phase flowfield that exist at the gate exit. In the present work, 2D numerical simulations of the flow of molten Magnesium through a high aspect-ratio rectangular gate are performed using a water analogue for an open and closed cavity. The numerical simulations made use of VOF-type (Eulerian) physical models and Lagrangian models. Further, a sub-grid scale model was implemented that, in conjunction with VOF-type equations can efficiently predict the general atomization pattern without the need for high-resolution grids. The numerical results were compared to experimental data for validation.

The following minerals found in the residual black sands from gold mining in El Bagre Antioquia (Colombia) were identified as having major economic interest: Ilmenite (FeTiO3), with an average of 49% of TiO2, frequently altered presenting crowns; lamellaes of rutile and alteration textures; titanomagnetite with up to 25% of TiO2; magnetite (Fe3O4) in individual grains or associated with others minerals as hematite and ferromagnesian silicates rutile (TiO2) with considerable quantities of Nb2O5(0.1-3.7%Wt); zircon (ZrSiO4) with 66%Wt of ZrO2 and monazite with an average of 63.43%Wt of REE, this frequently associated to xenotime and thorite forming textures as little drops. Analysis in EPMA and SEM/EDS showed percentages of minor elements and traces, thereby clearly establishing the applications of these minerals in diverse industries. Furthermore, a detailed granumetric study of the different minerals and textural relationships among them also allowed for establishing the basis for possible processing and exploitation.

South Central United States, an area including Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas, is a net exporter of refractories. Nearly $45 million of these materials was shipped in 1954 from plants in the area, compared with area consumption of $18.5 million. About 88 percent of all refractories production is concentrated in Missouri. The prevalent consumption pattern, however, is one of localized shortages. For example, although Texas uses more than half of the refractories consumed in the South Central United States, production of refractories in Texas is relatively small. Also, the apparent self-sufficiency of the area is in terms of value produced rather than in terms of products consumed. Nearly all of the $6,425,000 nonclay refractories consumed in the area were shipped from other States. Local resources possibly could be developed for making refractories to serve markets that currently are being supplied from outside the area. Since other industries are growing rapidly in the area, the market for refractories is expected to continue to grow--more rapidly than the national market. The Missouri refractories industry is economically important nationally. Nearly one-fourth of the clay refractories produced in the United States are made in Missouri. Moreover, Missouri produces most of the higher grade clay refractories, about 62 percent of the high-alumina refractories, and 85 percent of the superduty refractories. The competitive position of the Missouri refractories industry is strong. The national market for clay refractories and the market in the South Central United States are expected to continue to grow. The ratio of net income to the value of refractories shipped in Missouri is larger than the national average.

The objective of this study is to assess the impact of different reagents, such as limestone, lime, magnesium oxide, and sodium hydroxide, in experiments carried out in the single purification step and in two consecutive purification steps by raising the pH of a rare earth sulfuric liquor with the aim to remove or reduce the impurity concentrations in the rare earth sulfuric liquor. The choice for the best purification condition was made based on the minimum loss of rare earth elements (REEs), reagent consumption, and residue generation. The exploratory experiments show that it takes place in the two consecutive purification steps, the first one consists in dosing the limestone pulp until it reaches a pH of 3.5 followed by an addition of a lime pulp reaching a pH of 5.0. Under this condition, the results were a total removal of Fe3+, PO4 3− , and Th4+ ions and a reduction of 99%, 87%, and 37% w/w in the Al3+, UO2 2+, and SO4 2− concentrations, respectively, in the purified rare earth liquor. Furthermore, the lowest REE losses (8.3% w/w) and reagent consumption (4.3 kg/m3 ) and also a low residue generation (7.5 kg/m3 ) were observed in this condition. Despite reaching similar results regarding impurity removal, the experiments done with the addition of limestone, lime, magnesium oxide pulps, and sodium hydroxide solution in the single purification step, where the pH was raised to 5.0, presented higher REE losses (64.9%, 42.5%, 44.8%, and 60.9% w/w, respectively) and a higher residue generation (43.2, 25.1, 11.1, and 13.6 kg/m3 , respectively). This occurred due to the co-precipitation of salts containing rare earth elements in their composition. The experiments conducted with limestone, lime, and MgO resulted in a higher consumption of reagents, while the same result was observed when NaOH was used (4.3 kg/m3 ). In the experiments carried out with the addition of magnesium oxide and sodium hydroxide, the respective purified rare earth liquors presented a high concentration of magnesium, sulfate, or sodium, which could impact the quality of the marketable rare earth salts, whereas the salts obtained under the best condition observed in this study seem to be amenable for use as raw material in an attempt to obtain rare earth products with an acceptable chemical quality.

Since addressing the Institute a year ago on The Future of the Copper Industry (l), many things have happened, most of them bad. It has been a hard year for profits and prophets. It was, therefore, with consider-able perturbation that I accepted the gracious invitation of your Committee to reappear. On reviewing my remarks of a year ago, I. have wondered whether, under pressure of more important matters, the Committee had neglected to make a note of them, or whether they felt that further explanations from me were in order. In either event, I am glad that I am here and welcome the opportunity to make any contribution I can to a clearer understanding of the problems of copper to those concerned. The English-speaking nations own 80 per cent of the present world-production of the metal. Col. P. E. Barbour, Secretary of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, and I recently completed an estimate of the known world resources of copper. We placed the figure, in round numbers, at 100,000,000 tons of metal. Of this amount, about one-third lies in the United States, one-third in the British Empire, and one-third in South America; and all but 4 per cent of this is owned by British Empire and United States capital. Our figures do not include any estimates for Russia, Japan, or Europe, on which there are no available data. It is true, consequently, that the British Empire and the United States are the ones concerned. It seems to me to be a matter of great importance to the world at large, and of even greater importance to those nations themselves, that the known sources of supply of this metal, so essential both in peace and war, rest so strongly in their hands. I cannot believe that in the long run they will neglect their responsibilities in the wise administration of these resources.

THE Alaska Juneau mine has been developed through an adit driven at the elevation of the top of the mill and all mining is done above this main haulage level. As a result of wholesa1e"mining operations about 11,000 tons rock containing one dollar' per ton in gold is, hauled to the. concentrator during every 24 hr. Due to the method of mining, whereby a system of oreways delivers-the.ore direct from the stope to the bottom level of the mine, no tramming of ore is done on any of the upper levels. However, ;in doing exploratory drifting and crosscutting on the upper levels, the broken material is trammed by hand in 1-ton 18-in. gage cars to a nearby raise connecting with one of the several oreways. This constitutes the only tramming operation except that on the main level.

In his valuable report on Finishing Temperatures and Properties of Rails,l Dr. G. X. Burgess, Chief of the Division of Metallurgy, U. S. Bureau of Standards, has begun a line of investigation which should be continued by those interested in the subject, and who have proper facilities for carrying out the work. For the past year or more the Bethlehem Steel Co. has been conducting experiments to learn the effect of rail finishing temperatures on their physical properties and microstructure and the results are here given for the consideration of those interested in the rail situation. Considerable differences of opinion have been expressed by various authorities, in the past, as to the effect of large or small grain size and high or low finishing temperatures of steel rails on their physical properties and wearing qualities. Low finishing temperatures and, therefore, low shrinkage, have been advocated on the theory that the wearing qualities would be improved. Others have recommended high finishing temperatures. The generally accepted cause for rail failures, due to the development of transverse fissures, is excessive wheel pressure on hard rails. One of the causes advanced for hard rails has been that they contain too high percentages of carbon and manganese; another that the rails were finished at too low a temperature, i.e., at or near the critical point. In the experiments herein described the rails were rolled from reheated blooms. All the rail blooms were charged hot in a reheating furnace and brought up to about the original ingot-rolling temperature before rolling into rails. These rails gave better results in deflection, withstood a greater number of drops before breaking, and showed greater ductility than rails of identically the same composition and section which were rolled direct from the ingot. Rails rolled from reheated blooms, finished at somewhat higher temperatures than when rolled direct from the ingot, have a different microstructure, which the writer does not believe is due so much to the difference in finishing temperatures, as to the difference in

The eastern and southeastern regions of Ohio are part of Appalachian coal country, with a documented 1,300 miles of streams impacted by acid mine drainage. Since 1995, partnerships of local watershed groups, government agencies, private industries and universities have focused on the remediation of the affected waterways. The partnerships have spent $2.4 million annually in constructing and operating treatment systems such as wetlands, anoxic limestone drains, successive alkalinity production systems, steel slag leach beds, and lime dosers. These systems have been partially successful, and water quality has improved in the region, but no treatment has yet met the ultimate objectives of low cost, continual remediation. Our research group has investigated an alternative system for acid mine drainage treatment: electrolysis combined with pH adjustment to selectively precipitate recoverable, saleable metal products to offset the cost of treatment. We utilized a $0.2 million pilot facility constructed by the Wayne National Forest, in Nelsonville, Ohio, to process approximately 40 L/min of mine drainage from surrounding seeps. The pilot facility has multipurpose tanks that can be adapted to process acid mine drainage with different characteristics, such as high or low aluminum content or high or low carbonate concentrations. Sodium hydroxide was used for pH adjustment. Results indicate that saleable product can be generated with this treatment technology. In an initial, not optimized trial, one seep yielded 4.7 kg of dried 69 % iron oxide product from 10 hours of pilot facility operation, treating 23,000 L with electricity costs of $4.68. Dissolved iron concentrations in the water were reduced from 242 ± 18 mg/L to 2.8 ± 2.0 mg/L (99.0 % removal) while the initial acidity of 443 mg/L as CaCO3 was neutralized to an alkalinity of 160 mg/L as CaCO3. Iron oxide can be sold as pigment for an average of $1.47 per kg in the United States. Currently, approximately 80 % of all pigment used in the United States is imported, and there is incentive to purchase domestically recovered pigment. If the iron oxide from the pilot facility could be sold as pigment for $1.47 per kg, 43 % of the operating cost (raw materials, electricity and construction costs) of treatment could be offset by the sale of the product. Considering the cost offset, the electrolysis process shows potential as a sustainable low cost alternative for treating acid mine drainage.

Since my working life of 32 yr has been spent in and about the anthracite mines of the Hudson Coal Co., and the previous 4 yr in a college school of mines, I can write best about the safety program of a coal mining company. However, most of the suggestions, statements and practices mentioned herein are applicable to the members of a safety organization and program of almost any industry. It is realized that industrial officials actually interested in real safety work are fully acquainted with the requirements of a practical safety program. Therefore, for such persons there may be nothing new in this paper. The Hudson Coal Co. of Scranton, Pa., employs 7000 men and produces 5,000,000 tons of anthracite annually at nine collieries scattered for a distance of 40 miles throughout the Lackawanna and Wyoming valleys of northeastern Pennsylvania. For the past 17 yr of the above mentioned 32, I have been engaged in safety work as a safety inspector, assistant mine superintendent, and at present the safety engineer. I have also had the privilege of visiting coal and metal mines in other parts of the United States and Canada. We Americans are the most careless people in the world. If any one doubts this statement why are 100,000 of our people killed accidentally annually? Or why during the almost four years we were engaged in World War II were more of our people killed accidentally at home than were killed in our army, navy, marine corps, coast guard, and other services during the same period? We are careless everywhere— in our homes, on the highway, at work and at play. The purpose of this paper is to outline the requisites of a safety department and its program to stop the accidents occurring to employees at work in mines or industrial plants. The first requisite for a safety program is that the management must be convinced of the need and value of a real safety program. By "management" is meant each department head from the president down. Otherwise a good safety department with a good safety program will not succeed because it will not have the proper personnel and equipment to work with, its rules and regulations will not be enforced, and the members of the safety department will be belittled in the eyes of most of the workmen and supervisors. Next, a safety engineer and his inspectors should have worked in the production end of the mines as workmen and also in an official capacity. They are then in a position to have practical and first hand knowledge of the accident hazards of the industry, how to prevent them, and in general the problems of both the workmen and officials. Some men are appointed as safety inspectors when they are physically unable to carry on as mine officials. Such men may know the safety end of the industry and even be safety-conscious, but if they are physically unable to be mine officials they are also physically unable to be safety inspectors, as a safety inspector in our mines must walk from 2 to 4 miles on each daily inspection and visit each working

Com a tendência de aumento da complexidade geométrica dos painéis de cobertura dos automóveis, aumento de resistência mecânica e diminuição da espessura dos materiais, a estampagem dessas peças tem tornado cada vez mais difícil. Neste contexto, dois graus de aços que exibem elevada resistência mecânica e boa conformabilidade, têm sido ofertados pela siderurgia à indústria automotiva, o Bake Hardenable (BH) e o Interstitial Free High Strength Steel (IFHSS). O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar aços BH e IFHSS, em termos de propriedades mecânicas, de conformabilidade, de ganho de resistência em função da deformação, envelhecimento e de resistência à indentação, em escala laboratorial. Desse modo, visou-se avaliar sob quais condições de estampagem deve ser decidido o uso do BH ou do IFHSS em aplicações de painéis automotivos. Os aços avaliados, de um modo geral, apresentaram desempenho similar em termos de conformabilidade. O aço BH foi superior ao IFHSS em relação à resistência à indentação. Portanto, o aço BH aparece como uma solução técnica atrativa, comparativamente ao aço IFHSS, quando aplicado em painéis externos (capôs, portas e paralamas) que requerem maior exigência quanto à resistência à indentação.

At present there is considerable confusion in the asbestos industry with regard to density and porosity measurements of asbestos. In order to clarify the situation, various notions of porosity and density are defined by means of simple schemes and clear symbols are proposed to denote them. An experimental procedure is then preposed and outlined, which is based upon Archimedes' principle. Experimental conditions at each stage of the method are explained clearly in order to minimize the opportunity for errors. Finally, the results of a study on the porosity and density of asbestos minerals having various characteristics are presented.

This paper presents the evolution of the studies and strategic plans to extend the life of operations at the Savage River iron ore project in north-western Tasmania. The current Life-of-Mine (LOM) plan for the Savage River operations is based on a series of open pits. Drilling has confirmed high-grade extensions of the magnetite resource at depths that exceed practical limits for open pit mining. Grange Resources Limited, the owner of the operation, is investigating underground options – not only to extend the LOM plan but also to maintain peak production at a reduced operating cost while reducing greenhouse gas emissions into the future. What makes this project unique is that it requires introducing a productive and cost-effective mining method to exploit a challenging geotechnical and geometrical orebody in an area of high rainfall. To support the study efforts, the development of an exploration decline, underground drilling programs, and an exploratory drive excavated into the orebody for geotechnical investigation was key to providing the necessary data for a pre-feasibility study (PFS). This paper describes the pragmatic approach and processes to developing the underground mining options study through data collection and then integrating these options into the open pit plans to optimise an overall strategic plan for the Savage River operations. The learnings for operators from this experience are how the technical and pragmatic approaches were aligned to develop the strategic plans, and the importance of timely investment in gathering the necessary data.

CT scanning tests were used to detect the pre-existing fracture systems of 36 cubical coal blocks. Systematic procedures were developed to construct the pre-existing fracture geometry of the cubical coal blocks from the CT images. Based on the constructed fracture systems, the fracture tensor components were calculated to capture the directional effects of the fracture system of the cubical coal blocks. The effect of the pre-existing fracture system and different combinations of confining stresses on the strength and deformability of coal masses was investigated at a preliminary level using some true triaxial test results and the computed fracture tensor components. The strength of the cubical coal blocks in the loading direction was found to be closely related to the summation of the fracture tensor components in the two perpendicular directions to the loading direction and the level of the confining stress system. The deformability of cubic coal blocks in the loading direction was found to be correlated to the fracture tensor component in the same direction.

This paper gives an account of the laboratory testing, plant testing and final inclusion of the two-stage sulphuric acid leaching process in the Milliken mill. Operational results for September, 1962, are presented, showing a uranium extraction of 95.5 per cent, with a saving of some 16 lbs. of 100 per cent H~S04 and some 9 lbs. of lime per ton milled. Methods for effecting further improvements in the process are indicated. HISTORY P RIOR to the incorporation of two-stage leaching, the process for the treatment of uranium ores at Milliken consisted of a single-stage sulphuric acid leach, followed by a solution recovery step involving washing in thickeners and two-stage filtration. The thickener overflow solution was subsequently concentrated and purified by ion exchange, and the uranium was recovered, by two-stage precipitation, as ammonium diuranate. INTRODUCTION Investigations of radon and radon daughter concentrations in Swedish [non-uranium] mines started in the late 1960's. The first screening measurements showed that the average annual exposure to radon and radon daughter products was 4.7 WLM. The main reason for high radon and radon daughter concentrations was inefficient ventilation and radonrich water entering the mine. In the radon regulations worked out later it was stated that no miner should be exposed to more than 60 000 pCi h/1 equilibrium equivalent concentration of radon annual exposure, corresponding to 3.6 WLM. Now, 1981 the situation has changed considerably. From the average annual exposure of 4.7 WLM in 1970 it is now only 0.7 WLM. Sweden has up to now had only one [uranium] mine and the work there has only been investigative. However, there are plans for a commercial uranium mine in another part of Sweden. The radon problems in these mines are widely different depending on the mineralogy. NON-URANIUM MINES The radiation problems in Swedish mines were not recognised until the late 60's. The first radon and radon daughter measurements were made in some sulphide ore mines in 1967 (1). The radon and radon daughter concentrations were surprisingly high for non-uranium mines. In order to have a complete picture of the radon situation in Swedish mines the National Institute of Radiation Protection (NIRP) decided to make measurements in all, at that time about 60 mines (2). To get results as fast as possible measurements on radon gas seemed most appropriate to start with. Sampling was made by mailing a number of evacuated 4.8 litre conventional propane containers from NIRP to each mine. The containers were then opened at the place of interest. After sampling the containers were sealed and then mailed back to the institute for measurement. The measurements were made in ionization chambers. This method only gave the radon concentration and the radon daughter concentration was estimated by multiplying the radon concentration by an assumed equilibrium factor. The equilibrium factor is defined as the ratio of the total potential alpha energy for the given daughter concentration to the total potential alpha energy of the daughters if they are in equilibrium with the given radon concentration. The results of this first preliminary survey indicated that a great many of the Swedish miners probably had an annual radon daughter exposure of more than 3.6 WLM. As the radiation exposure in non-uranium mines was not regulated in either the Swedish Radiation Protection Act or the Swedish Labour Protection Act work was started on special radon regulations. A lung cancer mortality study was also started. To check the results of the first survey and to get experience and knowledge of radon problems in mines, it was decided that personnel from the NIRP should visit each mine for a detailed investigation of radon and radon daughter concentrations starting with the ones with the highest radon concentrations. The main reasons for these so-called "basic measurements" were: 1. To estimate the doses received by Swedish miners 2. To find the sources of the high radon and radon daughter concentrations 3. To find appropriate counter-measures 4. To determine the most typical equilibrium factor for each mine. Unlike most uranium mines the reason for high radon concentrations in non-uranium mines is seldom the occurrence of highly radioactive minerals. The main sources were found to be waste-rock and radon-rich water. In order to filter and warm up the inlet air, especially in winter time, it was very common at that time to suck the air through broken wasterock. By doing so the air was contaminated with radon from the waste-rock and radon-rich water in it. It is noteworthy that the radium and uranium concentration in the waste-rock is relatively low. The uranium concentration is only of the order of 15 - 20 ppm. The action to prevent this contamination of the inlet air was to change the direction of the ventilation and in the case of radon-rich water entering the mine the action was to prevent the air coming into contact with the water. The first calculation of the radon daughter exposure of Swedish miners was based on radon gas measurements. The radon daughter concentration was estimated by using an assumed equilibrium factor of 0.5. Later when the mines were visited by institute staff it was possible to compare the assumed equilibrium factor with the measured ones. It was found that the factor varied from 0.15 at the air inlet to 1.0 at the air outlet and the average equilibrium factor on workplaces for almost all mines was between 0.4 and 0.6. The result of the exposure calculation in 1970 showed that more than 40 % of the miners had an annual radon daughter exposure of more than 3.6 WLM. The mineral deposits found in carbonate facies rocks of sedimentary basins include deposits comprised of the country rock itself such as limestone for chemical uses, dolomite for road aggregate, and a variety of other industrial uses of the sedimentary rock. Exploration for new reserves is generally conducted on basis of outcrop investigation, subsurface drilling, and facies change studies while geophysics and geochemistry are not applied. In contrast, rapid development has taken place in the application of both geophysical and geochemical techniques in exploration for stratiform deposits of zinc, lead, barite, and fluorite deposits. This paper will present case histories and show illustrations from such work in the Mid-Continent region. The Metals Division of International Oil & Gas, Inc. has gathered this experience through work over the last three years along the southern margin of the Eastern Interior platform focusing on the states of Arkansas and Tennessee. The exploration work was conducted partially for the Company's own account, partially in joint exploration ventures with mining companies including International Mogul Mines, Ltd., a Canadian company; Bear Creek Mining Company, a subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Corporation; the Mining Division of W. R. Grace and Company, and Boliden-Preussag Exploration, a Swedish-German partnership. We wish to take this opportunity to thank our venture partners for allowing presentation of the various sections of this paper.

This paper presents a novel model to assess the risk of adjacent buildings in tunnelling environments based on Extended Cloud Model (ECM). ECM is an organic integration of Extension Theory (ET) and Cloud Model (CM), where ET is appropriately employed to flexibly expand the variable range from [0, 1] to (-8, +8), and CM is used to overcome the randomness and fuzziness during the gradation of evaluation factors. The risk level of a specific adjacent building is assessed by the correlation with the cloud models. A confidence indicator ? is proposed to illustrate the rationality and reliability of evaluating results. Ten buildings adjacent to Wuhan Metro Line Two (WMLT) are randomly chosen among hundreds of adjacent buildings for a case study. Results have proved to be consistent with the actual situation. Compared with other traditional evaluation methods, ECM has been verified to be a more competitive solution with high calculation accuracy, wide adaptability, as well as simplified computer programming. There are no stringent requirements on the quantity of training data during the modelling process, and the original data can be directly entered into ECM without a normalization procedure, avoiding the potential information loss. ECM can be offered as a decision support tool for the risk assessment in urban tunnelling construction and worth popularizing in other similar complicated projects.
