Most large skarn deposits are zoned in both space and time relative to associated intrusions. Zonation occurs on scales from kilometers to micrometers, and re?ects in?ltrative ?uid ?ow, wall rock reaction, temperature variations, and ?uid mixing. The most spectacular examples of skarn zonationusually occur at the skarn-marble contact, where transitions between monomineralic bands can be knifesharp. Other small-scale examples occur in zoned veins and individual mineral crystals. Although,visually striking and scienti?cally interesting, in mineral exploration these small-scale variations areless useful than deposit- or district-scale zonation. In most skarn systems there is a general zonationpattern of proximal garnet, distal pyroxene, and vesuvianite (or a pyroxenoid such as wollastonite, bustamite, or rhodonite) at the marble front. As well, individual skarn minerals may display systematic color or compositional variations within the larger zonation pattern. Such patterns are reviewed for 14well-studied examples of Cu, W, Sn, Au, and Zn-Pb skarns. In addition, many deposits have endoskarnor other alteration of the associated intrusion, and recrystallization or other subtle changes have occurred in the surrounding wall rocks. Copper skarns, such as Mines Gaspé in Quebec and Big Gos-san in Irian Jaya, have high ratios of garnet:pyroxene and are zoned outward from the intrusion, to gar-net, to pyroxene, to massive-sul?de replacement and vein deposits. Garnets in Cu skarn are Fe-rich and change from dark red-brown near the intrusive contact to paler brown, green, or yellow in distal loca-tions. Pyroxenes in Cu skarns are pale and diopsidic near the intrusion, and become darker and more Fe- and Mn-rich away from the intrusion. Tungsten skarns, such as Salau and Costabonne in France and Pine Creek and Garnet Dike in California, have intermediate ratios of garnet: pyroxene, are more extensive vertically and along strike than perpendicular to the intrusive contact, and have zonation pat-terns commonly complicated by overprinting of metamorphic lithologies. In W skarns, garnet is com-monly subcalcic and the pyroxene is Fe-rich, re?ecting particularly reducing wall rocks or great depth of formation. Tin skarns, such as Dachang in China and Moina in Australia, also can have subcalcicgarnet and Fe-rich pyroxene, but this reduced mineral assemblage typically is due to an association with reduced S-type granites. Tin skarns differ from most other skarn types in having a late greisens stage that may replace earlier Sn-bearing calc-silicate minerals, thus liberating Sn to form cassiterite.Many high-grade Au skarns, such as Hedley in British Columbia and Fortitude in Nevada, have low ratios of garnet: pyroxene and are associated both with reduced plutons and reduced wall rocks. Gold-rich zones occur in Fe-rich, pyroxene-dominant, distal skarn. Zn-Pb skarns, such as the Yeonhwa-Ulchin district in Korea and Groundhog in New Mexico, have low ratios of garnet: pyroxene and generally form distal to associated intrusions. These skarns also are zoned from proximal garnet to distal pyroxene and pyroxenoid (bustamite-rhodonite), with signi?cant zones of massive sul?des within and beyond skarn. Manganese enrichment of most mineral phases, particularly pyroxene, is characteristic of distal zones. Fundamental controls on skarn zonation include temperature, depth of formation, composition and oxidation state of associated plutons and wall rocks, and tectonic setting. Most W skarns form at relatively great depth, 5 km to 20 km, with extensive high-temperature metamorphic and meta-somatic mineral assemblages. In contrast, most other skarn types are relatively shallow, <10 km and mostly <5 km, with limited, lower temperature metamorphic aureoles. Differences in oxidation state correlate well with different skarn zonation patterns, particularly garnet: pyroxene ratios and compositions, and can be used in both classi?cation of and exploration for skarn deposits

Lead-refining practice at the Bunker Hill differs to some extent from that of other United States refineries using the Parkes process, in that the Bunker Hill has reverted to a custom used years ago of making two kinds of skims, or crusts, in the desilverizing kettles. Also, this was the first refinery to adopt the liquation process for silver skims as developed in Australia. Both of these ideas were brought to the attention of the operator by H. S. J. Sommerset, in the summer of 1924, while he was visiting metallurgical plants in the United States, when he was general superintendent of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty., Ltd., of Port Pirie, South Australia. Since Mr. Sommerset&apos;s visit, United States patents on the liquation process have been issued to George Kenneth Williams, of Port Pirie, South Australia. At the Bunker Hill, the lead bullion is conveyed from the blast furnaces to the refinery in brick-lined cast-steel pots, each having a capacity of 5 tons, by a 20-ton electric crane, to which is suspended a Fairbanks-Morse suspension-type scale on which the gross, tare and net weights are obtained. The bullion is poured from the small bullion pots into either one of two kettles of 105 tons capacity, and when a kettle is entirely filled the heavy dross is removed by skimming it into a 5-ton pot suspended by the crane. The crane operator becomes proficient in the manipulation and a kettle is skimmed in a very short time. After the kettle is skimmed clean the bullion is pumped to a kettle of the same size alongside, where the bullion is cooled until it has almost frozen. By using two kettles for the drossing operation, one to accumulate the bullion where the heavy dross is removed, and then pumping to a clean kettle comparatively free of hangings, etc., it is possible to reduce the copper content much lower than if only one kettle is used in the operation. Esse processo é principalmente usado em peças relacionadas à segurança passiva e à resistência ao impacto, tais como pára-choques e barras de proteção laterais. O uso desse processo aumenta a segurança dos passageiros e reduz o peço do veículo e, portanto, o consumo de combustível. No presente estudo, amostras de aço ao boro foram deformadas a quente, não isotermicamente, a 850ºC e 750ºC em 30% a uma taxa de 0,5s-1. As microestruturas obtidas após deformação a 850ºC foram quase totalmente martensíticas, diferente das amostras deformadas a 750ºC, onde houve uma diminuição da fração volumétrica de martensita e um aumento da fração volumétrica de ferrita. Portanto, a deformação aplicada a 750ºC resultou em uma diminuição dos valores de microdureza. Desta forma, tornou-se possível investigar a influência da deformação em alta temperatura na transformação martensítica, na fração volumétrica de ferrita e nos resultados de microdureza.

This paper describes briefly the topography and geology of the region where the mica-bearing pegmatites are found and discusses prospecting, the quality of the mica, its preparation, and evaluation of the deposits. Muscovite mica occurs in a number of widely separated localities in Brazil, but production has come largely from deposits in the southeastern and eastern part of the State of Minas Gerais (Fig. I). There the deposits form a discontinuous zone, which starts at a point go km. north of the city of Rio de Janeiro and extends north for some 500 km., roughly parallel to the coast. A maximum width of 180 km. is reached along the Rio Doce. To the west in Minas Gerais, and extending east into the states of Espirito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, the mica zone proper is fringed by areas in which there are scattered occurrences of mica-bearing pegmatites. A few of these outlying deposits have produced commercial mica, but most of them are unimportant. To the southwest, in the State of Sao Paulo, there are a number of mines, which at one time produced a very considerable amount of sheet mica, largely as a byproduct of kaolin mining. These deposits, and a few others lying between them and the main productive areas to the northeast, appear to be the southwestern continuation of the strong Minas Gerais mica zone. In the vicinity of Conquista, just north of the Minas Gerais boundary in the State of Bahia, and still farther north, near Jacobina, there are several known mica deposits. Their location indicates that they may be the northern continuation of the main mica zone. The major part of Brazilian mica production has come from four areas within the mica zone proper; from north to south, Governador Valadares, Raul Soares, Espera Feliz, and Muriaé.. The first is go km. from north to south and reaches a maximum width of 180 km. The Raul Soares area extends 135 km. from northeast to southwest, and in places is 80 km. wide. The Espera Feliz area is 100 km. from north to south, and reaches a width of 35 km. The Muriai. area extends 150 km. from northeast to southwest and its width reaches 40 kilometers. Between the known productive areas, and in the areas directly to the southwest and to the north of them, little mica has been produced. These gaps, as well as certain irregularities in the outline of the mica zone itself, are to be ascribed either to lack of prospecting or to conditions preventing the discovery of mica, rather than to its nonexistence. Elsewhere in Brazil mica has been reported from eastern Goiaz, Ceará, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Sul, Matto Grosso, and Amazonas. Production from these sources is negligible at present. Because of the inferior quality of the mica from the more accessible of these localities, and the operational difficulties occasioned by the remoteness of others, it is improbable that they will become important producers for some time to come.

The objectives of the Continuous Shaft Lining (CSL) System are to reduce the costs, safety hazards, and time currently required in lining mine shafts with concrete. The CSL will line machine bored shafts downward from the shaft collar on a continuous basis using an inverted, pressurized slipforming technique. The technique for slip-forming downwards has been demonstrated and refined under this program. The approach taken involved laboratory scale testing of key features of the CSL concept. These feature tests included concrete distribution, concrete sealing, concrete slipforming and development of a reliable concrete mix. Based on these results, a full scale above-ground test facility and CSL were designed and fabricated. The objectives of these tests were to demonstrate the viability of the basic concept; to establish operating limits; and to provide input data and information for the design of a second generation shaft lining system. The results of the program have led to a CSL design and operational philosophy which will need to be tested in an underground environment before industry will accept the technology. However, the next generation CSL promises to meet all the original program technical objectives.

The maximum solid solihility within a gvoup of homologous cottrpoods SeetlLs to increase with increasing flatness ol the liquidus curvres. The phenomenon of retrograde solubility in metals, i.e., maximum solubility in a solid terminal phase in equilibrium with a liquid phase, has been theoretically predicted by Van aar&apos; in his calculations of hypothetical binary phase diagrams. It was not until 1926, however, that retrograde solubility was experimentally verified in the Zn-Cd system.&apos; Since then many sys- tems with retrograde solubility have been found, so that at present approximately fifty binary diagrams with a retrograde solidus curve are known.3 Meijering4 has critically appraised the accumulated data and has presented calculations which alloy predictions as to whether or not a solidus line will be retrograde. Interest in retrograde solubility increased when it was found that the solidus curves of germanium and silicon alloyed with a great many doping elements are retrrade. The problem was treated thermody-namically by odkinson,% d all available data on solid solutions in germanium and silicon were summarized by Trumbore.7 Although it is to be expected that intermetallic compounds will also exhibit retrograde solubility, experimental evidence is much more limited. Until now retrograde solidus curves have been reported for the compounds de,&apos; be, Ps:" ne," SnSe," and SnS.13 All these compounds are semiconductors, and the solidus curves were usually obtained by determining the carrier concentration at room temperature of samples equilibrated at elevated temperatures and then quenched. It has been hown,&apos;&apos; however, that it is not always possible to quench in the equilibrium compositions from above a certain temperature. A complete rational analysis for design of excavation slopes and loaded rock masses is a desirable but perhaps unattainable goal. Irregular external and internal boundary conditions, poor understanding of failure criteria for large masses of rock, capricious material properties, and the importance of indeterminate forces and inaccessible and virtually un- sampleable rock defects emphasize the importance of experience in this aspect of rock engineering. The experience must be correlated with geological factors. In certain regions the accumulation of such experience through the observation of existing rock slopes in various formations constitutes an important aspect of studies for design of rock excavations.

Considering the subtractive trend of the sulfide and high-grade zinc ores in worldwide and also in Iran, Nowadays special attentions have been drawn to the extraction of zinc from its other resources such as low-grade oxide ores and secondary resources. Oxide ore of the eastern part of Mehdi-abad lead and zinc mine is silicate and has an average grade of 7% (with cut off grade of 4%). Main mineral of the Mehdi-abad ore is Hemimorphite and this mineral is associated with Goethite, Hematite, Ferrous Dolomite, and Manganese oxide mineral so that oxides of Iron, manganese and silica include almost 50% of the total ore. In this paper, the results obtained from the leaching kinetic study of the low-grade zinc oxide ore using Sulfuric acid are presented. The effects of particle size, reaction temperature, acid concentration, and solid percent on the dissolution rate have been investigated. The results obtained from the Taghochi approach showed that the zinc recovery is about 78% under the following optimized conditions: particle size: 106µm, leaching time: one hour, temperature: 45°C, acid concentration: 15% and solid percent: 15%. Kinetics study was revealed that zinc minerals leaching controlled by diffusion rate through the product layer during leaching time with the activation energy of 5 KJ/mol and compliance with the 1- (2/3. x) ? Gold extraction is largely driven by mineralogical factors, which often cause gold losses to various tailings. Mineralogical factors affecting gold recovery include grain size and shape, surface coating or rimming on gold particles, the presence of cyanide or oxygen-consuming minerals or preg-robbers, the presence of slow-dissolving gold minerals and the refractory nature of submicroscopic gold. Among these factors, locking of fine gold particles in sulfide, silicate and other minerals, either as visible, fine-grained gold inclusions and/or as invisible submicroscopic gold, is by far the most common factor leading to poor gold recovery in gold ore processing. This paper discusses the mineralogical characterisation of gold lost in tailings and its metallurgical implications. The techniques used in characterising the un-recovered gold are also briefly introduced.

This paper describes current research by the Bureau of Mines to develop technology for improving efficiency and productivity in metal/ nonmetal mines. The research program addresses a wide variety of problems associated with each of the major categories of mining: underground mining, surface mining, in situ mining, and premining investigations. An overview of the Bureau&apos;s research activities is given with emphasis on underground mining. In particular, two innovative and promising concepts currently under development are described: a unique shaft sinking system that uses an impact hammer for rock fragmentation, and a low-profile, portable crusher for underground hard-rock applications.

The uphole bench extraction strategy at EKJV Management Pty Ltd?s Raleigh Mine, requires simultaneous horizontal and vertical exposure of paste filled stopes. In order to prevent excessive ore dilution, the paste fill must be of sufficient strength to prevent failure during exposure. A numerical modelling methodology has been developed to accurately simulate the initial stress distribution within paste filled stopes, together with the strain-softening loading response of paste fill material. Due to the narrow orebody width and high deformation behaviour of the host rock mass, high closure strains are likely to cause a stiff, brittle fill material to undergo crushing failure upon exposure. The stability of paste fill exposures at the Raleigh Mine was determined by conducting a series of three-dimensional numerical models that incorporate the extraction, filling and exposure sequence of paste filled stopes. Stability charts for 2.5 m and 3.5 m wide simultaneous horizontal and vertical exposures have been derived based upon the numerical modelling results. Implementation of the stability charts has proved successful in limiting the amount of ore dilution from paste fill and provides a basis to optimize paste fill cementation and stability throughout the life of the mine.

Viscosity of oxide melts is one of the fundamental physicochemical properties that plays a crucial role in important technological and natural processes like slag flow, slag/metal separation, volcano eruptions etc. However, many oxides melt at extremely high temperatures and are highly corrosive in the liquid state, which makes experimental measurement of melt viscosity by traditional experimental techniques a difficult and expensive, if not unachievable, task. In this case it might be useful to employ other methods of viscosity determination such as modelling or simulation. In the present paper the shear viscosity coefficients of selected pure refractory oxides (CaO, MgO, Al2O3 and others) have been simulated at temperatures above their melting points via the classical molecular dynamics and compared to the available viscosity data (eg experimental viscosities, other model predictions) collected by the authors. The simulation has been carried out using the noncommercial molecular dynamics simulation package LAMMPS and the Born-Mayer-Huggins potential, which parameters for the selected oxides were taken from the literature. Several viscosity calculation techniques (the Stokes-Einstein and Green-Kubo equations, the so called Einstein relations, and the non-equilibrium molecular dynamics methods) have been applied to ensure a more reliable viscosity calculation. It has been demonstrated that the simulated viscosity of the selected melts agrees with the available experimental data. It has also been shown that the simulated viscosity of a number of the oxide melts investigated is close to that calculated by phenomenological viscosity models, which supports viscosity extrapolation from the corresponding binaries and ternaries, if no experimental data is present for unary systems. In general, it has been demonstrated that the molecular dynamics simulation could provide a reasonable estimation of viscosity if no other viscosity data is available.

The M2 Upgrade Project involved widening 15 km of the existing M2 Motorway, which is a key route in Sydney’s road network. The Norfolk Twin Tunnels in North Epping convey traffic over a 460 m length of the motorway. The project involved widening the twin tunnels to provide a third lane and breakdown lane in each direction.The widening of the tunnels was fundamentally different to other ‘greenfield’ tunnel projects in that the operation of the tunnel was maintained throughout construction, with motorway traffic permitted close to the excavation faces on a daily basis. The widened works had to integrate with the existing tunnel support, construction details, and mechanical and electrical infrastructure.The existing tunnel afforded the opportunity to review existing ground conditions in the tunnel. Exposures were mapped within the tunnel, and key design parameters were back-analysed from the original monitoring data to provide increased confidence in the assessed impact from the widening works.Traffic capacity of the tunnels was maintained by detailed staging of the works, and included the ability to reopen the tunnels at short notice.A permit to tunnel system was developed to manage the risks associated with re-opening the tunnel to traffic. A comprehensive suite of instrumentation was maintained to provide reliable monitoring data to support this process. Emphasis on the robustness and reliability of tunnel instrumentation provided increased confidence in the adequacy of the tunnel support being installed. The monitoring was routinely compared with design predictions to check the adequacy of the support measures being installed and confirm the design.The approaches and methodologies developed for the widening of the Norfolk Tunnels were effective in maintaining the safe operation of the tunnels throughout the two years of construction, and provide a framework for increasing the capacity of existing tunnel infrastructure in the future.CITATION:Clarke, S J, de Ambrosis, A L, Bertuzzi, R and Redelinghuys, J, 2014. [This is the eleventh in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first report contained data, on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The present report presents analytical data for 2,020 samples, representing the products of approximately 120 companies, which, as in previous surveys, include both large and small suppliers. In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were received. As in previous surveys, the data are divided into the three groups of samples of regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines, and each group has been averaged separately. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group, exclusive of the of the Pacific coast, axe as follows: Regular price, 1,071 samples, 29 items, and 77 brands premium Price, 608 samples, 235 items, and 72 brands; third-grade gasoline, 341 samples, 196 items, and 78 brands. The coagulation of dispersions of weakly magnetic oxide mineral ultrafines (such as natural hematite or chromite) in an external magnetic field can be described from inter-particle forces. Essentially, coagulation occurs when the short range London-van der Waals interactions and the long range magnetic forces outweigh the stabilizing electrical double layer repulsion. From the classical colloid chemistry theory, we have calculated the various components of the potential energy for different sized particles at a series of ionic strengths and magnetic field intensities. We have related this theoretical analysis to experimental studies where the magnetic field-induced coagulation of ultrafines of natural hematite and chromite in aqueous suspensions was investigated using a laboratory scale electromagnetic solenoid. The experimental results relate the coagulation process (as determined by magneto-sedimentation analysis) to the particle size, the slurry pH and the external magnetic field. In the magnetic fields, maximum coagulation occurred near the pH of zero point of charge (pHzpc) of the minerals (where the electrostatic double layer repulsion was reduced to a minimum) enabling the particles to enter the "primary minimum" energy sink. On the other hand, in cases where the electrostatic repulsion was not suppressed, then the long range magnetic forces enabled coagulation to occur in the "secondary minimum". This caused the formation of chains which appeared to be relatively stable during sedimentation.

The first report contained data, on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The present report presents analytical data for 2,020 samples, reprecenting the products of approximately 120 companies, which, as in previous surveys, include both large and small suppliers. In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data averaged the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and&apos; are published exactly as they were received. As in previous surveys, the data are divided into the three groups of samples of regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasoline each group has been averaged separately. The number of samples, items, and old brands comprising each group, exclusive of the of the Pacific coast, axe as follows: Regular price, 1,071 samples, 29 items, and 77 brands; premium price, 608 samples, 235 items, and 72 brands; third-grade gasoline, 341 samples, 196 items, 78 brands. Roof bolter canopy air curtains (CACs) are gaining acceptance as a respirable dust control device that can provide roof bolter operators with protection from overexposure to respirable coal mine dust. Both lab and field studies on the effectiveness of roof bolter CACs have been published. Field studies have shown the effectiveness to be variable. However, in all previous field studies, none has been conducted when the roof bolting machine operates downwind of the continuous miner (CM)—a scenario for which the CAC was designed to provide respirable dust control. This study, performed by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), was conducted to test a CAC on a roof bolter machine operating downwind of the CM. The results of testing demonstrated that the roof bolter CAC can effectively provide respirable dust protection for roof bolter operators with dust control efficiencies ranging from 11 to 40%.

"The close vicinity of mining companies to other sites that are used for commercial and residential purposes or to areas under conservation as well as the fact that the people become more and more sensitive to emissions have led to a negative attitude towards mining operations in the neighborhood. It is above all the use of drilling and blasting techniques that give rise to objections, in the course of which demands for more environmentally-friendly production methods have been voiced. It is in this context that production methods without the use of explosives are considered as an option. After all, the use of such production methods is the only alternative for some quarry operators. The question is what are the true benefits of these techniques and what is the relation between a possible improvement of the environmental effects on the one hand and the technological potential as well as the costs on the other. It is intended to assess the mining techniques for solid rock in their entirety. This paper will therefore look at the aspects for assessing mining techniques in the context of their environmental impact and the costs."
