This paper describes the procedures and results of a series of experiments conducted to determine the depressing effect of sodium, calcium and magnesium ions on the amine flotation of quartz. It also presents an analysis of the experimental results by the electrical double layer theory. The flotation of quartz with primary amines has been practiced on a large scale in the phosphate industry for many years. Some glass sand —and recently iron ore — has also been treated by this flotation technique. These applications have been highly successful and demonstrate that a complete mastery of all the details of an operation is not needed to achieve an economic success. There are times, though, when it becomes important to recognize, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the effects of some previously ignored variables. The effects of cations on the amine flotation process, particularly those ions that contribute to water hardness and abound in sea water, are a case in point. In conjunction with the development of a cationic flotation reagent for separating quartz from apatite, it became necessary to quantify the influence of calcium and magnesium on the separation. In order to strengthen and broaden current understanding of the flotation process, the results were interpreted by means of the electrical double layer theory. "This work has as its objective to evaluate the firing behavior of a kaolinitic clayey body from Campos dos Goytacazes-RJ incorporated with flat glass waste (FGW) from civil construction. Incorporations of the waste, with a particle size less than 74 µm (200 mesh), were performed in the red ceramic in the following amounts: 0, 2.5, 5 and 10 wt%. Specimens were prepared by uniaxial press-molding and then fired at 850 and 1050°C. The characterization of FGW was done by X-ray Fluorescence. The physical and mechanical properties evaluated were: linear shrinkage, water absorption and flexural rupture strength. The microstructure of the fired ceramics was evaluated by optical microscopy (OM). The obtained results showed that the flat glass waste can be used as a component of ceramic bodies once it was noticed tolerable modifications of technological behavior.IntroductionBrazil is one of the world’s largest producers and consumers of clayey ceramic. NEED for some simple method of determining tonnages in mill circuits has always been felt by operators and consultants alike. To meet this demand the following method was evolved and has been found accurate and practical after considerable testing on various mill flows. The essence of the method is to add a chemical at a uniform rate to a mill flow, such as a launder conveying pulp, and then determine the concentration of the added chemical in a sample of the pulp. From this procedure the tonnage can be calculated. Common table salt has proved the most satisfactory chemical for ordinary conditions. This report presents the results of an investigation of a mine production-scheduling model and a critical path analysis for long-range mine planning. An example is given to illustrate how these techniques might be used to plan long-range development and production scheduling for a large underground mine. The model, based on estimated ore block grades and tonnages, and on designed mine development layout, simulates mining of ore blocks in a sequence necessary to fulfill mill requirements for ore tonnage and grade evaluation within pre-established system restrictions. Simulated production schedules are obtained as output from the model. These production schedules are then incorporated into a critical path analysis to determine the sequence for the long-range development work so as to fulfill the production schedules and thereby meet the ore grade and tonnage requirements of the mill.

Detailed fragmentation data for different blast delay timing tests at the Red Dog mine in Alaska are analyzed. This work is a continuation of previous work in which the crusher output was found to be better described by the three-parameter Swebrec function than by the Rosin-Rammler function. For a crusher model, the x50 variable sufficed to describe changing crusher input while b and xmax could be considered fixed. For the crusher output from aggregated stockpile rock, as measured by digital image analysis using Split-Online, the constancy of b was not as apparent. In this paper detailed stockpile data, single Split data series, and sieved belt cuts of crusher product are analyzed using the Swebrec and truncated Rosin-Rammler functions. The variability of b is confirmed. By using specific fraction passing sizes a shortcut is presented that removes the need to do curve fitting to determine the three Swebrec function parameters.

FIFTEEN years ago Dr. Manning published a paper in "Petroleum Development and Technology" on '.Fundamental Research Relating to Petroleum." He tabulated for several industries "the proportion of their present success which can be fairly attributed to the application of information and processes obtained by scientific research," giving petroleum a score of 7 compared to 100 for the electrical and coal-tar industries. Today the petroleum industry as a whole and the producing groups both have raised their score beyond the majority and are climbing toward the top. Present practices are being developed both by fundamental research and the application of the research method in field operation.

This study examined the effects of pH and sulphate concentration on the surface charge and stability of alumina and pyrite dispersions. The relationship between these properties was investigated using measurements of electrophoretic mobility and settling velocity. The maximum aggregation for both minerals was observed near the iso-electric point (iep) where the force of repulsion is at a minimum. Aggregation decreased at pH values away from the iep, where an increased surface charge causes electrostatic repulsion between particles. Zeta potential data revealed that sulphate ions were adsorbed only on positively charged surfaces for both minerals. Adsorption of sulphates on the alumina surface increased aggregation by reducing the surface charge from >+25 mV to close to zero. These results indicate an electrostatic bonding of sulphate ions to alumina surface. Preliminary results on the interaction of pyrite and sulphate ions indicate a similar response.

Last month's engineering fundamentals article discussed some general considerations of underground mine ventilation. This month's article takes a look at auxiliary ventilation-brattice, fans, and ducting-in underground mines. The need for good, efficient auxiliary ventilation increases as mines get deeper and move farther from ventilation shafts. New mining methods and equipment resulted in faster work area advances, liberating more dust, gas, and heat. As a result, worker health and safety requirements in the face area have become more stringent. For all these reasons the safety and efficiency of any underground mine depends heavily on its auxiliary ventilation. The purpose of such ventilation is to supply sufficient quantities of clean air to the face of the drift and to maintain air quality within desired limits until expelled from the mine.

"This paper traces the development of Ontario 's cap lamp standard. Over the years, numerous Coroner's Juries investigating fatal mine accidents have made recommendations with respect to underground lighting. As well, recommendations to improve mine lighting have been made by two Commissions, investigating mine safety in Ontario.During the past few years, the performance of any cap lamp worn by miners involved in serious accidents, have been measured by the Mining Heal/h and Safety Branch. Large variations in light output were found between and among cap lamp types. These variations have been attributed to the lack of quality control on the bulbs, design of the cap lamp head piece and in some cases, poor maintenance.In 1986, a series of underground tests were conducted to establish the minimum light output from cap lamps required to visually identify loose ground. The results of these tests indicated that a cap lamp should produce a minimum peak illuminance of 1500 lux measured at 1.2 metres from the light source. On May 30, 1987, Ontario became the first province in Canada to legislate the minimum amount of light required to visually assess ground conditions. INTRODUCTIONPoor lighting has been identified as a factor which can contribute to mining accidents. Over the past decade, several Coroner's Juries as a result of inquests into mining fatalities, have recommended improved lighting in mines.The Joint Federal-Provincial Inquiry Commission into Safety of Mines and Mining Plants in Ontario, was appointed to report upon the adequacy of existing arrangements and practice s that may affect safety. This Commission completed their report in April 1981, and recommended that inadequate lighting be investigated as a possible cause of all reportable underground accidents, and that a comprehensive research programinto mine lighting be undertaken.In response to the first recommendation, the Mining Health and Safety Branch of the Ministry of Labour, hereafter referred to as the Branch, initiated a program to measure lighting levels in all fatal accident investigations where inadequate lighting was a possible factor."

Although the majority of current steel production is supported by iron ore sourced from high-grade haematite deposits, the long-term growing demand for steel has led to higher raw material prices and opened the way for many new magnetite deposits to also be developed. There is a rich and long history of magnetite ore processing in Western countries, including large operations such as Cleveland Cliffs in the USA and LKAB in Sweden, as well as smaller operations like Savage River in Tasmania. The challenge for virtually all magnetite operations is to minimise operating costs, which is dominated by the cost of power required to fine grind the ore in order to achieve acceptable concentrate iron grade together with low impurity content. This remains the case today and will be even more important in the future when a carbon tax is expected to become a significant addition to the operating costs for magnetite deposits. Historically, the lowest operating cost was achieved by multistage fully autogenous grinding with integrated magnetic separation steps between the stages. The major benefit of fully autogenous grinding is the elimination of steel grinding media costs and the need to discriminate between steel and magnetite in coarse magnetic separation. The separation step between grinding stages progressively reduces the amount of material to be ground. Application of more efficient grinding technologies developed in the last 20 years, including high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) for fine crushing and stirred milling for fine grinding, has provided opportunities to further reduce the operating costs associated with comminution. Both technologies are already implemented in some magnetite processing operations, although in limited capacity. The results of a theoretical option study for high capacity processing of a hard, fine-grained silica-rich magnetite ore is presented in this paper, with the emphasis on comminution circuit options. Several circuit options are ranked based on a net present value analysis incorporating an estimate of carbon tax added in the operating cost. The study demonstrates the significant advantages of applying more efficient autogenous grinding technologies.

During the summer of 1875 I visited some of the iron mines of Houghton County, Mich., and was quite interested to observe the progress made there within a few years. Working in open pits is gradually giving place to underground work in most of the mines where this system is practicable. In some cases, as in the Lake Superior Mine, the body of ore is so irregular, and the deposit so liable at any time to be pinched out, or nearly so, that it. has been found impractical, if not impossible, to lay out any plan for systematic underground work. But in many other mines the deposit is so regular in character, that the work can be laid out in shafts at regular intervals, and a series of 60 feet levels. The Michigammi Mine, opened in 1872, and first worked in 1873, is arranged on this plan, though some quarrying is still done. But the men are being put at overhead stoping as fast as it can be got ready for them, and before long it will all be worked in this way. The New York Mine is undergoing a similar change to the pillar system, and several others have either been changed, or it is about to be done. My principal object in visiting this region was to obtain samples from some of the important mines, so as to be able to answer the question: "What is the average percentage of iron in the Lake Superior ores?" Most iron furnaces work on mixtures of ore, so that it is impossible to tell, from their records, just the percentage in each one.

Halide media are considered as suitable alternatives to cyanide for extracting gold and have received much attention lately. The extraction of gold by iodide-iodine mixture has been patented and briefly studied without much attention given to the fundamental aspects of this process. This paper reports recent studies on the kinetics of gold extraction in iodide media, using hypochlorite, iodine and hydrogen peroxide oxidants. The kinetics of dissolution was found to be dependent on the solution pH, reagent concentration and most importantly the iodide- oxidant molar ratio. Without proper control, the gold surface can be passivated due to the formation of solid products. Thermodynamic modelling was carried out to determine the equilibria governing the dissolution process. The formation of AuI solid was also identified as a possible product during the dissolution.

For many years, underground workings in the Bou Azzer mine have been challenged by geotechnical problems related to the serpentinite instability. The stage of evaluation of the compression potential is crucial to develop an appropriate drilling method and the choice of non-standard support. This research work presents a retro-analysis of serpentinite behavior in underground excavations at different depths, using a multi-approach method, based on several empirical and semi-empirical and theoretical-analytical methods, calibrated by the observational method. The analysis performed in this work reveals that underground excavations in Bouazzer East and Ait Hmane area would encounter compression problems that were recognized as the most serious from a depth of 300 m because of the effects of lithology and tectonics. Therefore, the Aghbar region has a slightly negligible compression potential. The compressive failure mechanism in this mine, depending on the mechanical strength, is started at induced stress of 9 MPa.

The district of Patricia, in the province of Ontario, lies northwest of the Albany River and extends northward to Hudson Bay. Formerly this was the unorganized district of Keewatin, the southern part of which was divided in 1912 between the provinces of Manitoba and Ontario. The interprovincial boundary now runs north from Lake of the Woods for 275 miles and thence northeast 375 miles to Hudson Bay. This district is comparable in size to all the older part of Ontario south of the Canadian Pacific Railway east of Lake Huron—thus it is roughly one-third of the whole of the present provincial area. The central part of this great triangle is one of the least accessible parts of Canada. From it streams flow southward to the English River, southeastward to the Albany, northward to Hudson Bay and the Hayes River, and westward to Lake Winnipeg. None of the streams is large and canoe travel is not easy. The only industry it has ever had is the trade in furs. Until the development of the airplane on a commercial basis, the only means of travel was by canoe or dog-train. There is not a mile of railway in the whole district. The two areas to be dealt with lie in the southwestern part of Patricia. Red Lake is 50 miles east of the Manitoba boundary and 75 miles north of the transcontinental railway from Cochrane to Winnipeg. Woman Lake is 50 miles farther east and slightly farther north. The late Dr. D. B. Dowling, of the Geological Survey of Canada, visited Red Lake and spent some time there during his exploration survey from Lac Seul to Berens River in 1893. He also visited the Woman Lake basin during the same journey, but his examination of it was much less detailed, the great area covered by him during the one field season making it impossible to make more than a hurried reconnaissance. Some prospecting in the Red Lake district followed Dowling's exploration, but the distance from railway was too great for any systematic work to be done. In 1922, following the usual plan, the Ontario Department of Mines made a geological reconnaissance of the English River, following :in instrumental survey of that river and its lakes by the Department of Lands. Alteration and mineralisation at the Island Copper deposit is related to the intrusion of Early Jurassic quartz feldspar porphyry dykes into surrounding comagmatic Bonanza volcanic rocks. The pyrophyilite alteration zone forms an upward flaring cone, largely hosted within a breccia body that cross-cuts the Co, Mo, and Au-rich ore shell. This alteration zone contains pyrophyllite, dumortierite and diaspore and resembles alteration occurring in some high-sulfidation deposits, but which is barren. Fluid-mineral equilibria and fluid inclusion studies indicate formation at approximately 300 ¦C from fluids dominated by steam and gases. These fluids appear highly acidic, but sulfur poor, leading to extreme base leaching within the breccia body and surrounding rocks.

"Hydrocyclone-thickener circuit is a promising solution to enhance the dewatering efficiency in mineral industries. The challenges in the circuit is reducing particle size in the thickener feed and the good feature is a rise in the retention time of sediments in the thickener. In this work, the effect of particle size, bed depth and residence time on the thickener performance were investigated. In this order, pilot scale columns were employed at Sarcheshmeh and Shahrebabak copper complexes. Furthermore, the influence of residence time was differentiated due to the variations in the bed depth and settling flux. Moreover, a new approach was introduced to estimate solids residence time in the thickener. results indicated that with smaller particles that are introduced to the column, the bed density as well as thickener discharge solids concentration dropped significantly. It was found that thickener discharge solids concentration fell from 59.6 to 33.8 % with reducing particle size from 130 to 22 µm in the settling flux of 20 t/m2/day. Additionally, it was found that longer residence time and deeper bed resulted in an increase in the thickener performance while the bed depth has a stronger effect. It was proved that employing a hydrocyclone prior to the thickener resuted in an increase in the dewatering efficiency.INTRODUCTION Thickeners are widely employed in mineral industries to recycle tailings and concentrate water content. A limited fraction of suspension water content is recycled using a thickener. For instance, about 50 percent of tailings water content could be recycled using a shallow bed thickener during copper processing. Since the scarcity of global water resources became more serious, the demand for improving dewatering efficiency in mineral industries became more significant [1]. A number of solutions were recommended to enhance dewatering efficiency of thickeners including optimization of current thickeners, employing deep bed thickeners and utilizing thickener-filter or hydrocyclone-thickener circuits. Optimization of existing thickeners is essential, however, it does not meet the significant demand for recycled water. The application of deep bed thickeners (known as paste thickeners) has been rising in the mineral industries [2] due to a higher dewatering efficiency while its costs is remarkable."

Reagents form a crucial part of flotation process as they have the power to control the surface properties of minerals. In case of coal flotation, collectors and frothers are two the important and commonly used reagents. But other types of reagents such as promoters, modifiers and depressants are also finding wide applications because of their availability to improve selectivity and increase recovery. Because of these chemicals the scenario has changed from flotation being used mostly for high rank hydrophobic coals to low rank, oxidised or inferior coals. In the present work a case is presented in which two non-ionic surfactants (abbreviated as A & B) known to act as emulsifier have been studied to get a better flotation performance for a preparation plant with varying feed characteristics. Laboratory flotation tests were conducted with both the surfactants using three feed samples of the plant by varying the dosage at three different levels. The highest combustible matter recovery (more than 80%) was obtained for surfactant B at a dosage of 75 ppm (parts per million) for feed 1. But at the same dosage the recovery decreased by 21% and 10.2 % respectively for feed 2 and 3. On the other hand surfactant A showed a consistent result for all the three feed samples giving the highest value at a dosage of 50 ppm followed by a decrease beyond this point. The tests were complemented by contact angle measurements that demonstrated the same trend. In addition to this the reproducibility of data for Surfactant A was checked and found that the standard deviations for both separation efficiency and combustible matter recovery were within the permissible range (less than 5%). Finally an in-plant process optimization study to evaluate the performance and applicability of surfactant A at industrial level was done and has been discussed.

Due to the high energy consumption of milling, it is desirable to improve the efficiency of this process. One alternative to reduce energy and material consumption while optimising production yield in mill operation is through balanced design and selection of liners. Over-design of liners leads to increased life but at a cost to grinding performance, a relationship which to date has not been studied closely. This paper provides a description of this process of liner life cycle optimization and presents initial results from the first of two life cycles being studied for a 32 foot (ft) SAG mill. The use of commercially proven high resolution laser scanning based liner shape information provided by the MillMapper® software correlated with well controlled site surveys at various points in the liner life was used as the basis for comparison. The survey data was modelled in JKSimMet to provide direct comparisons of mill performance. This potentially provides a methodology for the design of liners that maintain a favourable shape for the majority of liner life, yielding desirable production parameters such as lower specific energy consumption and higher throughput, while at the same time maintaining practical liner life cycles.
