Combustion processes, comminution and materials handling can generate airborne particulates. Regulation of these particulates by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) is becoming progressively more stringent, and regulations will soon include ?nanoparticulates,? which are particles finer than 100 nanometers (0.1 mm). Nanoparticulates are believed to have significant negative health effects due to their high surface area and reactivity. Although it was argued that nanoparticulate concerns were only important for combustion, studies at Michigan Technological University have shown that materials handling and comminution release significant quantities of nanoparticles into the air. Laboratory studies have shown that the use of sodium metasilicate reduced airborne particles finer than 10 mm (PM10) by 86% and particles finer than 2.5 mm (PM2.5) by 80% for iron ore. Additional studies were conducted that revealed that nanoparticulate emissions were present in the types of operations conducted at pyrometallurgical facilities.

The feasibility of increasing the deportment of titanium species and the stability of the pseudobrookite solid solution (M3O5) in a titaniferous slag was investigated, to facilitate the valourisation of titaniferous slags. Thermochemical simulations using FactSage™ software, ver 8.3 (by Thermofact/CRTC and GTT-Technologies), and equilibration-quench experiments were conducted using an appropriate synthetic titaniferous slag composition in an oxygen partial pressure (pO2) ranging from air to 10-16 atm under non-isothermal conditions. The temperature-pressure phase stability diagram for the synthetic slag containing 37.19 per cent TiO2, 19.69 per cent SiO2, 13.12 per cent Al2O3, 16.00 per cent CaO and 14.00 per cent MgO showed that the spinel solid solution (M3O4) was the primary phase until a pO2 of 10-10.5 atm, thereafter M3O5 was the primary phase until a pO2 10-13.2 atm. M3O4 again was the primary phase between a pO2 10-13.2 and 10-16 atm. The changeover of the primary phase coincided with an increase in the liquidus surface. When cooling the slag in a pO2 of 10-16 atm, M3O5 crystallised as a ternary phase that showed a rapid increase in mass while that of the primary M3O4 phase decreased and that of the secondary perovskite (CaTiO3) phase increased at a slower rate. At 1300°C under sub-liquidus conditions, the contents of M3O5, M3O4 and CaTiO3 were about 20 per cent, 15 per cent, and 11 per cent, respectively. Experimental results showed that the Ti3+/Ti4+ mass ratio in the M3O5 phase, ie a measure of the reduction of titanium species, is not considerably sensitive to equilibration temperature in the reviewed range. Slow cooling and minimum/no oxidation during cooling of titaniferous slag would increase the deportment of titanium species to, and the growth and stability of the M3O5 phase.

Using a nitrided fused-iron catalyst, the Bureau of Mines investigated the Fischer-Tropsch reaction in the oil-circulation process. The nitrided iron was quite stable and permitted the longest run obtained thus far in the oil-circulation process without the need for reactivating the catalyst--3,700 hours of operation. The effects of several operating variables--temperature, pressure, gas-recycle ratio, space velocity, synthesis-gas composition, and synthesis with and without reflux of oil to the reactor--on the production of oxygenates were studied. The importance of removing reflux oil and of high gas recycle in increasing the oxygenate content was shown. A finished gasoline containing 28 percent by weight alcohols was produced. The research octane number (RON) was 92.9 clear, increasing to 98.5 with the addition of one milliliter of tetraethyl lead (TEL). INTRODUCTION The Federal Bureau of Mines has been engaged since 1944 in a research and development program on the synthesis of gasoline from coal. Gasification of coal with steam and oxygen to yield a "synthesis gas"--a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen--is being investigated at Morgantown, W. Va., and the synthesis of gasoline by catalytically reacting carbon monoxide and hydrogen over iron by the Fischer-Tropsch reaction is being investigated at Bruceton, Pa.

An experimental procedure was developed for studying magnetic roasting on a accurately-controlled laboratory scale. The loss-in-weight method was used and the course of reduction could be followed under a reducing gas atmosphere containing as many as five different components. Some important variables of the operation were checked on a marginal Mesabi iron ore containing porous and dense varieties of hematite as well as pure goethite. The conditions simulated were those for the grate roasting of a coarsely-sized ore burden. Temperature was maintained at 600°C; gas composition at 4.25% CO, 4.25% H2, 17.0% CO2, 15.0% H20, and 59.5% N2,, and gas flow rate at about 1,5 lineal feet per minute. The ore charge was composed of quarter-inch cubes. Under these conditions, the ore porosity was found to be one of the governing variables of the operation. Results showed that an ore size limitation existed as a function of this ore porosity. For efficient magnetic conversion, the size limit was 3/8 inch for very porous ores and about 65 mesh for very dense ores. An anomaly was noted in the weight losses incurred during actual magnetic conversion. For goethitic ores, these were generally about 13 per cent higher than could be accounted for theoretically. The effect was attributed to possible non-stoichiometric structures forming during the reduction process.

Driven piles are widely used for foundation support. In the vast majority of cases, an increase in pile capacity occurs with time which is referred to as “set-up.” However, in a very limited number of cases, a decrease in capacity with time can occur. This phenomenon is referred to as “relaxation.” This paper will provide a brief review of the relaxation phenomenon, as well as pile driving information and dynamic test data on cases where relaxation has occurred. The pile types in the presented relaxation cases include H-piles, open-end and closed-end pipe piles, prestressed concrete piles, and prestressed concrete piles with H-pile stingers. The soil conditions where relaxation occurred includes dense to very dense fine sands, heavily over consolidated clays, and weak laminated rocks. Relaxation information from 36 piles at 26 sites is assessed. The collected data will assist foundation designers by identifying the subsurface conditions where relaxation has occurred, as well as by documenting the corresponding relaxation magnitude. One method of addressing relaxation when it is encountered is to drive the foundation piles to a greater end of initial driving capacity than required long-term. Hence, the identification and quantification of the relaxation magnitude will be beneficial to foundation designers installing similar pile types in similar subsurface conditions. The paper will also present pertinent observations and recommendations on mitigating relaxation when encountered. INTRODUCTION One of the earliest observations of a decrease in redriving resistance following initial driving was reported by Miller (1937). He reported that piles driven into a saturated, coarse grained soil could lose 40 to 50% of their resistance when redriven 24 hours after initial driving. Yang (1956) similarly reported that after a break in driving, a decrease in driving resistance could be encountered for piles driven in dense fine sand, inorganic silt, or stiff fissured clay. Parsons (1966) in his paper that described piling difficulties in the New York City metropolitan area termed this phenomenon “relaxation”. In this time period, pile capacity was most often evaluated from a pile driving formula frequently checked by a static load test. Hence, the true magnitude of the capacity decrease on a given pile was often poorly quantified. Furthermore, dynamic measurements that could determine what influence driving system performance variation had on the observed redriving resistance were not yet readily available.

"Rare Earth Elements (REEs) and their compounds are essential for numerous modern high tech applications such as renewable energy technologies, catalysts and defense applications. The destabilization of REE pricing owing to the global demand and supply deficit has forced many countries to re-evaluate the possibility of indigenous production of REEs. Cost effective and eco-friendly opportunities are being widely explored for extraction of REEs from non-conventional mineral sources such as coal and coal byproducts to stabilize the supply chain. Coal from Central Alaska (Healy Coal Mine) and Southern Alaska-Cook Inlet (Wishbone Hill) province have been found to possess elevated REE concentrations as compared to average world coal estimates. The objective of the study is to enrich the REEs in the fine size fraction (-75 Microns) from Healy and Wishbone Hill by froth flotation technique. A Box-Behnken design was applied for modeling and optimization of some operating variables on the flotation to maximize REE enrichment. The variables studies were frother dosage, pulp density (% Solids) and collector dosage. Experiments were carried out using a statistical design and the main and interaction effects on response variable was evaluated by analyzing 3D response surfaces. Based on the experimental results the optimum flotation conditions for maximum REE enrichment in the froth fraction was obtained at 4.2% Solids and 32.7 ppm of frother dosage for Healy coal sample and 10% Solids and 37.9 ppm of frother dosage for Wishbone Hill coal sample. The quadratic equation for modelling and optimizing the response variable is found to be independent of collector dosage for both the coal samples. INTRODUCTION Alaskan coal deposits are distributed in three major coal provinces and are in Cretaceous and Tertiary rocks. The climate, vegetation type and sedimentation process has attributed to low sulfur content (averaging 0.3 percent) in Alaskan coals compared to other coal deposits found across the globe. In Central Alaska-Nenana and Southern Alaska-Cook Inlet coal province coal resources are contained in Tertiary rocks while bulk of the Coal resource in North Slope coal province is contained in Cretaceous and Tertiary coal bearing rocks [1]. Coals from Central Alaska- Nenana (Healy) and Southern Alaska-Cook Inlet province (Wishbone Hill) have been found to possess elevated concentrations of critical REEs as compared to the amounts present in world coals (Figure 1). The Wishbone Hill deposit is considered a relatively small deposit, with about 14 million tons of identified reserves, compared to Healy which has over 500 million tons identified [2]. The REE concentrations up to 286 ppm and 524 ppm on ash basis have been reported by Gupta et al. in 2016 with elevated concentrations Ce, La, Y and Nd which are expressed to be of critical importance by US Department of Energy. Accordingly, the two coal samples possess the potential to be used as a REE resource in the near future under favorable socio-economic and geo-political scenarios. [3, 4]"

This paper briefly reviews the adequacy of existing management theories and practices and the managerial proficiency or competency in the South African mining industry. The investigation revealed that existing management practices are totally inadequate to enable all employees on all the levels of the mining industry to achieve the results required from them, in all aspects, at all times. As a result, the South African mining industry is gradually losing its long standing reputation as a relative cheap, competitive, and reliable supplier of minerals to the local and global markets. According to some prominent management authors and theorists, an all-inclusive unified management theory does not exist at present. In this paper the authors summarize the main aspects of a newly developed comprehensive, practical, and integrated management method. It is believed that the application of this method would significantly improve the future performance and competitiveness of the South African mining industry

WHEN the writer was engaged early last year by Canadian Comstock and its subsidiary, the Metropolitan Electric Company, to act as Consulting Mining Engineer in connection with the layout and equipment of the new ore-dressing laboratories at Laval University, Quebec, the metallurgical laboratory section of the School of Mines building was completely erected, including plastered walls, partitions, etc., and finished concrete floors. At that time, however, no equipment had been ordered, except three Dominion ball-mills and two Bell screening machines. ADVANCED OR CONTINUOUS LABORATORIES The continuous laboratory section of the Department occupies the basement and three floors of the building, with an approximate floor area of 9,000 square feet. Because of limitations imposed by the design of the building (height and arrangement of rooms, strength and design of floors, etc.), modifications of layout from what otherwise seemed most desirable were, of necessity, made. These included: (a) Omission of automatic sampling of the dry ore. (b) Complete elimination of inclined belt-conveyors through floors. (c) Exclusion of bucket elevators for either dry or wet ore transfer. (d) As a substitute for grill-covered drains and floor sumps, drainage from sections or from individual pieces of equipment was piped to a disposal system in the basement. (e) Substitution in several instances of fabricated steel in place of the usual concrete foundations for machinery. (f) Reducing floor cutting and area of such opening to a minimum. Ore storage and chute capacity above the basement level was also minimized to reduce total weight.

The interest of industry, in particular future mining, is pointing towards the use of novel visualisation systems to improve the operational efficiency of user interfaces. While the technologies used to enhance operators’ experience are advancing, the implementation of novel visualisation paradigms within mining operations is trailing behind other industries, particularly health and aviation. In this work, we present a number of initiatives and use cases of immersive virtual and augmented reality systems that can fit within the mining context. These ideas represent a step towards new platforms that might increase the efficiency and safety of mining operations through applications such as 3D panoramic video monitoring technology with annotated information coming from big data analytics and visual analytics processing engines. However, while the technologies are used in a variety of training settings, their application in the working environment is lagging behind. This paper presents examples of scientific visualisations that could be applied in a mining context to extend the possibilities of operators’ cognitive abilities and working efficiency. "PULMONARY ALVEOLAR macrophages (PAM) protect the lungs by providing a first line of defense against inhaled foreign debris and bacteria. In this role PAM phagocytize foreign matter, secrete enzymes that augment microbial killing and digestion, and produce reactive oxygen me-tabolites (2, 3, 18, 19, 22, 26). However, in addition to this antibacterial function, PAM participate in a diversity of functions, such as tissue repair, lipoprotein metabolism, and immunoregulatory activities (11, 22).Studies have suggested the existence of a heterogeneous population of PAM with respect to immunologic function, enzyme release, phagocytosis, morphological characteristics, expression of membrane receptors, ad-herence, and superoxide (O2•) release (4-7, 10, 16, 21, 23, 28). This heterogeneity has been observed by analyz¬ing subfractions of PAM separated by cell density frac-tionation. For example, using guinea pig PAM, Dauber et al. (7) showed heterogeneity in cell density and size, morphological characteristics, and cytochemical properties, whereas Holian and co-workers (16) reported variations in migration, chemotaxis, O2• release, and pinocytosis among subfractions collected. Similarly, O'Neill et al. (21) observed functional heterogeneity in rat PAM with regard to phagocytosis, O2 • release, and lysosomal enzyme activity.Several investigations have reported a correlation between PAM activity and cell volume. Most studies have shown that O2 release from PAM increased with decreasing cell size (15, 21, 25), although Bielefeldt Ohmann and Babiuk (4) reported a decreasing trend. However, Gallin (13) has suggested that significant variability may even exist within density-defined or cell-volume subfractions that could lead to misinterpretation of results concerning PAM heterogeneity.A better understanding of the heterogeneity in O2 production may be obtained by using single cell meas-urements to evaluate whether functionally distinct sub-populations actually do exist. As such, the present study was designed to examine heterogeneity in O2 • release from single PAM using a recently developed electrooptical technique (8). The initial oxygen metabolite, O2•, produced by NADPH oxidase at the surface of the plasma membrane, was measured by quantifying the reduction of nitro blue tetrazolium (NBT I to a diformazan precipitate. Measurements were made from video recordings of individual cells stimulated by their adherence to the bottom of a culture dish. The cell volume and degree of spreading also were determined directly from the same video recordings, and the data were correlated with the initial rate and maximum amount of diformazan produced by the same cell."

O teorema de Fourier diz que se pode expressar uma função periódica como uma soma de uma constante e de uma série determos de senos e co-senos, onde as frequências associadas com essas funções são múltiplos inteiros (harmônicos) da frequência fundamental. A análise de ondaletas é capaz de revelar aspectos de dados que faltam em outras técnicas de análise de sinal, aspectos como tendências, pontos de degradação, descontinuidades em derivados mais altas, e de auto-similaridade. Além disso, porque proporciona uma visão diferente de dados do que aqueles apresentados por técnicas tradicionais, a análise de ondaletas muitas vezes pode comprimir ou retirar o ruído de um sinal sem degradação apreciável. Nesse contexto, os sinais de emissão acústica provenientes da deformação por tração uniaxial em amostras de polietileno foram analisados e caracterizados, resultando em clara distinção entre os sinais provenientes dos regimes de deformação elástica e plástica.

Ash fusion temperature is the temperature at which the mineral matter in coal begins to soften, flow and fuse. It is an important parameter relating to coal utilization. Optimum ash fusion temperatures derived from coal in the Witbank Coalfield region are approximately 1400°C, and higher, although temperatures above1300°C may be deemed acceptable. This study attempted to determine which factors, mineralogical or inorganic-chemical, influence variations in the ash fusion temperatures in certain coals. Coal was sampled from the Number 2 coal seam at opencast and underground workings at New Clydesdale Colliery, Witbank Coalfield, South Africa. The samples represented known low and high ash fusion temperature coal. Analyses performed included proximate analyses, calorific value determination, percentage sulphur, ash fusion temperatures, ash analyses (composition of ash), X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and petrographic studies. Results show that although a complex relationship exists between ash fusion temperature and the various geological and coal parameters, some positive correlative results were obtained. These indicate a possible relationship between low ash fusion temperatures and i) finer size fractions, ii) an increase in iron content present in the form of pyrite and iii) the form in which pyrite is present, namely cleats. High ash fusion temperatures tend to correlate with i) the absence of pyrite or ii) pyrite present as framboids.

Hydraulic coal mining is being successfully practiced in China, U.S.S.R., Japan and Canada and in each country, excepting Japan where suitable sites are not available, the system is being expanded to either existing conventional mines or new mines. Productivity levels and economics at these mines are in all cases better than the productivities achieved in conventional mines in the same general localities. In the U.S.S.R. face productivities approaching 50 tons per man shift have been reported while in Canada the latest statistics show average face area productivity levels are in the region of 200 tons per man shift production monitor. In the United States hydraulic mining has not been actively pursued to the same degree and consequently there are no full scale hydraulic coal mines in operation or construction. Because many of the coal measures in the Western U.S.A. are generally somewhat similar to those being successfully hydraulic mined in Western Canada and parts of Siberia it is realistic to believe that successful hydraulic mines can be designed and developed in the Western U.S.A. Particularly if the vast technological base that already exists is used to improve on other people's ideas, systems, methods and equipment.

The floor of Shady Valley, Johnson County, Tenn., is underlain by the Shady dolomite formation. In places the residual clay derived from this formation contains considerable manganese oxides. Nine properties in Shady Valley and two in Doe Valley were prospected by the Bureau of Mines from January 1943 to April 1943. The results obtained indicate that the ore bodies are small and spotty and, that the ore is not well-adapted to gravity concentration. The work of the Bureau was confined to the open end of the valley. One mile northeast of the Ham Greer property, Beaverdam Creek enters a rocky gorge, and it was believed that the few prospects in this area were of secondary impor-tance and, owing to the steep slope and general roughness of the terrain, that exploration with the rite', bucket-drill would be impracticable. A total of 4,398.5 feet was drilled in 131 holes. In addition, 235 lineal feet of bulldozer trenches were cut and 4.5 feet of test pits were sunk. The following nine properties were explored in Shady Valley: Bentley, Walker, Blevins, Scott, North Ham Greer, South Ham Greer, Lipford, Blackburn, and Steagall In Doe Valley, the Gerd Shoun and Brookshire properties were explored.

"Far from being eclipsed by petroleum and natural gas, Canadian coal continues to command wide (and apparently growing) interest.Major R & D investigations are currently heavily oriented toward coal beneficiation (e.g., cleaning and utilization of fines) and toward a broad range of studies on metallurgical coals and cokes. However, active work is also being carried out in the areas of coal geology, mining, transportation and combustion; and, in some laboratories, increasing stress has been laid on developing a number of new, essentially non-fuel uses for coal and coal products.This review summarizes the work of Canadian coal research agencies during 1966 and indicates some of the more important advances made by them."

"The Stiner zinc prospect near the north boundary of Union Tennessee, and the Bunch Hollow property 5 miles northeast in Claiborne County, Tennessee, were diamond-drilled by the Bureau of Mines during the period .September 1, 1944, to February 22, 1945. Seventeen holes totaling 5,687 feet were completed, 13 of which, totaling, 5.083 feet, were on the Stiner property and the remainder, totaling 604 feet, at Bunch Hollow.The Stiner prospect is about 1 mile east of the old workings known as ""New Prospect"" or ""Lead Mine Bend."" The Federal Geological Survey made a study' of the area early in 1944. The prospect was first visited in August 1944 by Bureau of' Mines engineers3/ accompanied by members of the Federal Geological Survey.4/ The locality is reached by traveling State Road 33 north-about 9 miles from Maynardsville, Tenn., thence northwest about 7 miles by an improved county road that leads to the mine (fig. 1). The tract comprises an area of about 181 acres held by G. S. Stiner of Sharps Chapel, Tenn.; it is now under option to the Universal-Exploration Co. of Jefferson City, Tenn.The Bunch Hollow property, about 5 miles northeast of the Stiller prospect, was also studied by the Federal Geological Survey previous to being;Visited by Bureau of Mines engineers in August 1944. It is reached by traveling north from Maynardsville, Tenn., on State Road 33 about 13 miles, thence northwest by county road 6 miles to the property (fig. 1). The last 3 miles of the county road are in poor repair but are passable during the entire year. The property comprises an area of approximately 300 acres and is held by the imperial Mining Co., Pressman's Home, Tenn.Few reliable data are available as to the history of the Stiner prospects themselves. However, the New Prospect mine, 1 mile west, has had a colorful past, This mine was opened in 1883 and was worked intermittently until 1918, by which time more than 65,000 tons of concentrates had been shipped. No further work was done until 1942, when the mine pillars were robbed and 1,900 tons of ore averaging 25 percent zinc was shipped to the New Jersey Zinc Co., Austinville, Va."

DURING recent years, there has been a material increase in the use of ferrophosphorus in the steel industry. It has been observed, when rolling sheets, that those made of Southern iron did not have to be rolled at as high a temperature as the others and, consequently, did not stick together. The reason was found to be the phosphorus content of Southern iron. It was therefore thought that an addition of phosphorus to sheet steel of other than Southern origin would give the same result as the use of Southern iron. At first, this addition was made by intro¬ducing phosphate rock in the blast furnace and reducing it together with the iron ore; but, because of the necessity for only small quantities of this grade of iron, the process was not satisfactory. The manufacture of ferrophosphorus was then introduced, so that additions might be made to the open-hearth furnace or ladle. Ferrophosphorus was first manufactured in the blast furnace. This method, however, can only economically produce a grade of product up to about 20 per cent. To produce a higher grade, it would be necessary to charge a larger proportion of phosphate-bearing material; and as the rate of absorption by the iron is low, there would be an increased loss of phosphorus oxides. This feature makes the production of a higher grade ferrophosphorus in the blast furnace uneconomical. The use of high-grade ferrophosphorus in the steel requires a smaller addition and involves, besides the economies in handling, an additional economy in transportation. The alloy with a higher percentage than 20 per cent. can be made only in the electric furnace. In the ordinary operation of the electric furnace in the production of ferrophosphorus, an alloy may be produced containing 26 per cent. phosphorus; this is the limit, for it does not seem possible to produce a higher phosphorus alloy even if large excesses of phosphatic materials are used. The reasons for the difficulty in raising this percentage of phosphorus are not known. The paper describes the two foundation techniques - mini piles and postgrouted bored piles. The mini pile system is presented with its design and installation parameters, especially the drilling technique. Two case histories demonstrate the application under extremely limited space and traffic conditions and the required modifications of the equipment. After the description of the postgrouted bored piles and its grouting technique, the paper gives a comparison of postgrouted piles and standard piles on a large basic test in Germany.
