"Vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite ironsand deposits occur along a 480 km stretch of the west coast of New Zealand. In the present study, the leaching behaviour of NZ ironsand was investigated in hydrochloric acid (2–10 M) solution at 50–80°C for 2 h. The resulting leaching liquors exhibited Fe/V ratios in the range 150–180. The distribution of trace element contaminants between solution and solid residue was investigated, and processing conditions have been determined for rapid and efficient dissolution of Fe, Ti and V into the leaching solution. In addition, mineralogical analysis of raw ironsand and leached residues was performed in order to study the leaching mechanism. Samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, qualitative and quantitative X-ray diffraction and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP). Results indicate that the dominant dissolution process follows shrinking particle mechanism. However, ironsand particles containing ex-solution lamellae exhibited a different leaching behaviour compared to homogenous titanomagnetite particles.INTRODUCTION Titanomagnetite ironsand (blacksand) forms Quaternary onshore beach and dune deposits and offshore marine deposits (Figure 1) along 480 km of coastline from Kaipara Harbour south to Wanganui on the west coast of the North Island (Christie, 2016). It attracted the attention of scientists from the earliest times (Galbreath, 1998). The principal minerals in ironsand are titanomagnetite (TTM), ilmenite, quartz and ferromagnesian minerals such as augite, hornblende, diopside, and olivine with smaller amounts of rutile and apatite (Mauk, 2016).Several large ironsand deposits have been discovered and exploited since the late 1960’s. The Waikato North Head and Taharoa mines are currently operating and they have a 2015 measured resource of 400 million tonnes in total and provide over 2 million tonnes of concentrate per year by simple cost effective magnetic separation process (Christie, 2016; Christie & Brathwaite, 1997). The concentrate contains not only 7–8% TiO2 and 56–60% SFe, but also 0.3–0.6% V2O5, is both a valuable titanium mineral and a source of vanadium. All the production is used for steelmaking industries. The other potential for utilizing more of this resource without requirement of integration into an iron and steel producing plant is to develop a hydrometallurgical route with advantages of higher efficiency along with lower emissions. Currently, there is no existing commercial process capable of extracting all three of these elements as industrial-grade commodity products. Acid leaching of TTM concentrate with higher degrees of recovery and selectivity is a key step in any possible hydrometallurgical route."

In this study, effects of the inert constituents, such as ash, and the effect of blending coals with differing rank and composition on the plasticity of coal blends were investigated. The reference coal originated from the Zonguldak region, in the north-west part of Turkey. Firstly, the effect of coal ash on the plasticity of Zonguldak coal was determined. Secondly, the relationship between the plastic properties of the individual coals and those of the blended coals were identified. Some important relations were found, related to the characteristics of the individual coals. Ultimately, the manner in which the plasticity of Zonguldak coal was affected by blending with low volatile coals was investigated. Keywords: coal blending, coal plasticity, coke, fluidity, rank.

Electrical conductivities and densities of the LiF- UF , LiF- ThF4 , NaF - C1F4 , and NaF - ThF systems were measured as functions of composition and temperature . The specific conductance and density varied linearly with temperature . Molar and equivalent volumes , as well as heats of activation for conductance , were calculated from the experimental data . At 1,000 ° C , the molar volumes ranged from 16 to 40 cubic centimeters per mole and the specific conductance ranged from 9.8 to 2.5 per ohm- centimeter as the actinide metal fluoride concentration changed from 0 to 60 mole - percent . Heats of activation for conductance were 3 to 7 kcal per mole . The data are interpreted on the basis of a semilattice model for the melts .

This report, the second of a series, presents the results of laboratory corrosion studies which were made in connection with a one-year test on aluminum lease tanks conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines. Part 1 of the report contains the results of the field tests. The studies were made on an oil lease in a so-called "sour district," near Borger, Tex., where free hydrogen sulphide accompanied the production of oil, gas, and salt water. Steel tanks previously used on the lease had suffered severe corrosion, because steel is inherently susceptible to attack by hydrogen sulphide. Because of the high resistivity of aluminum to the action of hydrogen sulphide, it was believed that this metal had promising possibilities as a material for the construction of lease tanks in "sour districts." The results of the one-year field test proved that aluminum lease tanks will withstand corrosion by hydrosulphide, but it as found that aluminum was susceptible to attack by salt water, which was invariably present in certain portions of the tanks, and that hydrogen sulphide accelerated this salt-water corrosion in an indirect manner, as will be explained hereinafter. In order to study corrosion conditions encountered in the tanks during the test period, a laboratory was maintained at the site of the aluminum lease tanks.

The western industrial world has to rely more and more on complex polymetallic sulphide ores as sources for base metals. These ores are composed of fine grained sulphide minerals such as chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and marcasite. The liberation sizes of the individual minerals can range between 30 um and 5 um. Therefore, applying conventional techniques to recover these finely disseminated minerals usually results in unsatisfactory metallurgical performances with high losses of the valuable mineral to the slime , fraction of the tailing. New concepts for treating these polymetallic complex ores are discussed in this paper. Beneficiation techniques utilizing new reagents and a new approach to pulp preparation are described. Some of these techniques were applied to ores from existing concentrators as well as to new ores. The results of these studies are discussed in the following sections.

"THE ASSESSMENT of pneumoconiosis-producing dusts in mines and other industries is usually undertaken for one or more of three reasons: (1) To compare dust exposures at particular operations with standards of permissible dustiness in order that hazards may be evaluated and preventive procedures initiated where required.(2) To study particular operations with the objective of improving dust control devices or procedures by locating dust sources. (3) To obtain data which, along with the results of medical investigations, may assist in understanding the causes of dust-induced diseases or aid in the establishment of permissible standards of dustiness. Most dust measurements are made for the first of these reasons -to evaluate dust hazards so that they may be controlled. For this purpose, four quite different assessment techniques have been in widespread use for many years. One of these is based on the konimeter, an instrument familiar to most .Canadian mining men; a second on the impinger, which is also widely used in Canada, and almost exclusively so in the United States; a third on the thermal precipitator, used extensively in Britain and South Africa; and a fourth on the tyndallometer, a light-scattering instrument used in Germany."

In this study the bonding within reduced titanomagnetite-coal compacts was investigated. The aim of the study was to better understand the binding mechanisms in the reduced compacts and, based on this understanding, to improve on their strength.Titanomagnetite ore was combined with sub-bituminous coal to form compacts. The compacts were then reduced by heating in a thermogravimetric furnace (TGA) to temperatures between 1000 - 1300°C under argon. The reaction progress was monitored by measuring the weight loss with time. The reduced compacts were found to have low strength in compression testing. The main form of bonding between the reduced titanomagnetite particles in the compact was by the formation of a slag-like material. Increasing the fi nal reduction temperature was found to have a profound effect on the strength of the compacts by promoting the formation of this slag-like material.Attempts to improve the strength of the compacts were made by changing two variables, the type of coal and the addition of rice husks. The addition of coking coal gave reacted samples that had little strength, while the addition of rice husks may have enhanced the strength of the reduced compacts.

IN THE FIELD of track haulage, interest has seemed to center on the question of larger mine cars both for handling material from loading point to shaft bottom or surface, and for shuttle service. Saving of time in car changing is obvious if larger cars are used. In addition, shorter trips result where car transportation is from face to opening without transfer. This also brings about side-track and equipment savings. Track shuttle service, using large automatic-dump cars (10 tons) between loading machines and trip loading point, has been a satisfactory solution for the operator who mechanizes a working mine regularly equipped with a large number of small mine cars. This development in track shuttle haulage, has made track installation and maintenance increasingly important, requiring closer supervision.

"Abstract - The Boston deposit is a recently discovered Archean lode-gold deposit located approximately 700 km northeast of Yellowknife, in the southern portion of the Hope Bay volcanic belt. Primary H2O-CO2-NaCl fluid inclusions associated with gold mineralization at Boston are of low salinity (4.6 ± 1.4 eq. wt.% NaCl, n = 182) and contain pure CO2. Homogenization temperatures of liquid-phase inclusions average 270° ± 33°C (n = 141), but some fluid inclusion assemblages contain coexisting liquid- and vapor-phase inclusions that homogenize near critical conditions, suggesting phase separation. In these groups, liquid-phase inclusions homogenized at 299° ± 25°C (n = 24), and vapor-phase inclusions homogenized at 338° ± 28°C (n = 18). These temperatures overlap within error, and a median temperature of ~320°C is taken as representative of trapping conditions within the veins. An approximate pressure of 2-3 kbar was estimated from fluid inclusion isochores at this temperature. Stable isotopic compositions of carbonate minerals from the mineralized zones range from -4.7‰ to -3.1‰ in d13C, and from 11.2‰ to 12.8‰ in d18O; quartz ranges from d18O = 12.8‰ to 14.9‰; and pyrite ranges from d34S = 2.1‰ to 3.5‰. The d18OH2O, d13CCO2, and d34SH2S values of the fluid calculated from these minerals at 320°C are 6‰-9‰, -2.4‰ ± 0.6‰, and 1.5‰ ± 0.5‰, respectively, and are intermediate between metamorphic and magmatic compositions. A unique source for the fluids cannot, therefore, be constrained from these data. Petrographic and geochemical data for the Boston deposit are consistent with data from other Archean lode-gold deposits worldwide, implying that the Boston deposit formed in a similar environment and from similar types of fluids. These results suggest that the Hope Bay volcanic belt may represent a major new mesothermal gold belt in this part of Nunavut. Although generation of environmentally harmful hydrogen sulfide is considered to be related to sour gas fields, sweet gas reservoirs and waste fluids, travertine springs and geothermal fields may also produce acid gas (H2S and CO2) under certain conditions. The potential parameters influencing such a possibility need to be fully investigated to evaluate the extent of the consequences and predict hydrogen sulfide generation accordingly. Reports on hydrogen sulfide production at different regions and fields were gathered worldwide for the cases when some of them did not have such a problem previously. In order to inspect different aspects of these case studies, some other regions with no hydrogen sulfide content were selected as control. In all cases water samples were taken carefully for chemical analysis in the laboratory. Besides, mineral compositions were characterised in some cases for better evaluation. In order to give a thorough prospect of hydrogen sulfide production, a geochemical model was prepared. In situ engineering geological conditions, especially pressure and temperature, were assigned in the model to investigate the possibility of H2S generation using PHREEQC software. The results of modelling revealed that although many similarities existed between mineral compositions of the cases, certain formations were particularly prone to hydrogen sulfide generation. For better evaluation, important exchangeable cation ratios such as potassium/sodium, calcium/magnesium and ion proportions like sulfate and chloride were calculated as trends of the formations. As expected, the model could successfully monitor a higher ratio of SO42- and Cl- in potential H2S generator formations. Wide variation in percentage of HCO3- was considered as a secondary observatory parameter for better estimation. In addition, it was noticed that higher anion content created an environment ready to absorb any cations and this makes H2S generation easier. Finally, using correlations between predictors and estimators for low depth and deep samples defined the degree of effectiveness for every sample.

Water-sealed cyclone is a new efficient equipment to use for grading,concentrating of slurry, it was researched and developed by the Kunming Metallurgy Research Institute in the 1980s , and ac-cessed to the 1990 national invention award and the national patent products (ZL02245313.X ). The equipment and technology are innovative, firstly, we design a set of micro-pressure (0.005~0.008MPa) water-sealed device, which eliminates the gas phase of three-phase of sol-id-liquid-gas of the traditional general hydrocyclone grading process, it only has solid and liquid phases. Secondly, the axial velocity envelope surface which is a factor of controlling the accuracy of grading changes to a wedge rotation; and the interface of upward flow to down flow changes from surface to the solid, it can improve grading accuracy. Thirdly, water-sealed box and catheter devices make the stilling which pass through the cyclone cone centrifugal force fields re-enter the pressure grading zone of catheter. The three innovations make water-sealed cyclone can reduce the loss of overflow and has less mud in stilling product. Because the excellent performance, the water-sealed cyclone has application in non-ferrous metals, ferrous metals, non-metallic and aluminum hydroxide industries for grading, desliming and concentrating since it has successfully developed.

The major deposits of anhydrite and secondary gypsum in Jamaica occur discontinuously at a single horizon within the Lower Eocene succession of southeast Jamaica. They are not intruded from other horizons of different age, as has previously been supposed. The gypsum and anhydrite occur in a regressive sequence at the junction between marine (Richmond Formation, Halberstadt Volcanics, Halberstadt Limestone) and overlying non-marine (Wagwater Formation) sediments. They are thought to have been formed in an arid supratidal (sabkha) environment. A variety of 'nodular' structures occurs in the gypsum and anhydrite which can be related to early diagenetic processes and compaction effects. All gradations exist between single isolated anhydrite nodules and structureless anhydrite due to closer packing and coalescence of nodules. The structures and textures in the anhydrite are thought to be consistent with penecontemporaneous formation from gypsum crystals rarely more than 2 cm in diameter. Single anhydrite nodules are not usually larger than 2 cm; nodules of greater size are compound, due to the coalescence of several smaller nodules. Some large compound nodules may have developed from single sand crystals or rosettes. Compaction of anhydrite appears to have been largely mechanical, but some rocks have an aligned fabric, suggesting later flowage

This paper discusses the technical and cost benefits of alternative data collection techniques used to collect lithological information, obtain laboratory testing samples and perform in situ testing. A comparison between diamond coring and sonic coring techniques is made using data from a recent geotechnical investigation for a final pit slope cut-back. The impacts of the coring method on laboratory strength testing results, material character testing and, ultimately, the mass strength parameters and subsequent slope design adopted are compared. The sonic coring method was chosen out of necessity and enabled the collection of tube samples of a clay unit of interest as well as bulk samples for material character and geochemical testing. The sonic coring generated unexpected degradation of clastic units, while cohesive clay-dominated units were recovered well. The likelihood that disturbance due to the coring method would result in lower than expected triaxial strength results was recognised ahead of time, with surplus samples collected and single-stage triaxial strength testing undertaken. This testing compared favourably with historic three-stage testing, where sample degradation occurred during the later stages. Material character testing of fine-grained, clay-dominated units was comparable with historic diamond core testing, while grain size estimates for more clastic units tended to be finer than previous results. The use of sonic coring over non-cored methods enabled the collection of material texture data, geotechnical properties and a full suite of geochemical analyses. This provided a comprehensive understanding of the lithological and geotechnical character of the rock and soil mass. A high-confidence geotechnical model was developed. The end result was the development of a slope design that was more aggressive than was previously designed (5° steeper inter-ramp angle), which has proven to be appropriate to the conditions following excavation. The mass spectra of 14 previously unreported alkylthiophenes are pre-sented. Low ionization voltage data of selected compounds from these 14 and 23 previously reported alkylthiophenes are presented and discussed for their value in supporting fragmentation mechanisms analytical correlations. A comparison with and corroboration of earlier correlations is made. Additional correlations concerning detection of side chain branching and the detection of ethyl-alkyl and propyl-alkylthiophenes are made. A discussion of the possible fragmentation routes and mechanism of fragmentation is given. Speculative structures are inferred s out some of the ions and hence this work provides a basis for suggesting fation mechanisms for the alkylthiophenes according to modern theories ass spectrometry. Verification of these mechanisms must await the availability of isotopically labeled molecules which are labeled in specific lotions that permit the definition of the paths of frag-mentation. Some suggestions for further work to generalize on the correlations and studies made to this point are presented.

As part of its goal to minimize requirements for mineral commodities through conservation and substitution, the Bureau of Mines conducted research to develop molybdenum as a potential substitute for superalloys containing the strategic and critical materials, nickel, chromium, and cobalt. Since molybdenum requires protection from oxidation at high temperatures, several complex oxides of the spinel and perovskite structure were investigated to determine which possessed the greatest potential for use as oxidation-barrier coatings. Two spinels (MgCr204 and MgA1204) and five perovskites (BaHfO3, YCrO3, NdCrO3, BaZrO3, and LaCrO3) were selected for testing. Various high-temperature prop¬erties that are important for oxidation-resistant coatings were examined, including diffusion rates of oxygen and molybdenum, recession (vaporization) rates, hardness, erosion resistance, sinterability, reactivity with molybdenum, and ease of application. From the evaluation of high-temperature properties, two spinels (MgCr204 and MgA1204) stand above the other oxides as possible coatings for molybdenum. However, laboratory coatings of MgCr204 at 1,360° C (2,480° F) are equivalent or inferior to currently available MoSi2 coatings; laboratory coatings of MgA1204 may be comparable under limited conditions to currently available MoSi2 coatings at the same temperature.

Shovel-truck systems for loading and hauling material in open pit mines are now routinely analysed using simulation models or off-the-shelf simulation software packages, which can be very expensive for once-off or occasional use. The simulation models invariably produce different estimations of fleet sizes due to their differing estimations of cycle time. No single model or package can accurately estimate the required fleet size because the fleet operating parameters are characteristically random and dynamic. In order to improve confidence in sizing the fleet for a mining project, at least two estimation models should be used. This paper demonstrates that the Machine Repair Model can be modified and used as a model for estimating truck fleet size in an open pit shovel-truck system. The modified Machine Repair Model is first applied to a virtual open pit mine case study. The results compare favourably to output from other estimation models using the same input parameters for the virtual mine. The modified Machine Repair Model is further applied to an existing open pit coal operation, the Kwagga Section of Optimum Colliery as a case study. Again the results confirm those obtained from the virtual mine case study. It is concluded that the Machine Repair Model can be an affordable model compared to off-the-shelf generic software because it is easily modelled in Microsoft Excel, a software platform that most mines already use. Laboratory testing has shown that the Marsh Funnel test can be significantly impacted by long-chain polymer entanglement. In general, shorter hydration time leads to more chain entanglement which in-turn, leads to higher marsh funnel values that values seen for longer mixing. This trend makes it very difficult to predict funnel-viscosity on successive days. Data is presented which helps to explain this chain interaction effect on Marsh Funnel data and how it differs from traditional Fann viscosity. The data suggest that this long-chain polymer entanglement occurs more in samples with less hydration time and decreases as hydration time increases. There is also suggestion that higher polymer concentrations have a greater drop-off in marsh funnel viscosity for a given aging length than do lower solids slurries. Fann rheology was shown to be much less impacted by the hydration time of the PHPA polymers than was Marsh Funnel viscosity. This suggests that the Marsh Funnel viscosity is impacted by some aspect of the slurry that does not affect Fann rheology as strongly. It is known from literature that longer-chained polymers have more potential to entangle and our data support the theory that the Marsh funnel viscosity is greatly impacted by this polymer-chain ‘roping’ entanglement.

With greater production of coal per man-hour of work than ever before achieved, the coal-mining industry of the United States established a better safety record in 1941 than in any year since 1930, the earliest for which complete reports of nonfatal as well as fatal injuries were collected by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior. In only one year (1933) of the 12-year period 1930-41 was the fatal-accident rate better than in 1941, whereas the rate for nonfatal accidents was better in 1941 than in any previous year. Accident and employment reports received from mine operators, together with fatal-accident reports received monthly from State mining departments and inspectors, showed that 546,692 men were employed in and about the coal mines of the United States during the calendar year 1941. This number does not include office employees or coke-oven workers. The increase of 1.3,426 over the number of employees in 1940 was accompanied by a gain in man-hours of work performed at the mines and an increase in average number of hours worked per man during the year.

Brine produced from subsurface formations may be employed successfully instead of fresh water as a flooding, medium in the secondary recovery of oil. The feasibility of this substitution has been proved in the shallow "shoestring" area of eastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma, where the supply of fresh water often is limited. In this procedure all brine produced with the oil is returned to the formation and thus is prevented from contaminating streams and fresh-water supplies. This report includes a detailed description of a "flood project" in eastern Kansas studied by the Bureau of Mines. In an attempt to determine whether brine, when handled properly, can be used as effectively as fresh water in flooding oil from partly depleted, formations, an analysis was made of all .own conditions that influence flooding.

In the past five years Cuba has been attempting to more than double its nickel production by constructing two new ammonia leaching plants. No metals are yet produced on commercial scale but a variety of oxides and sulfides. This report updates the Cuban nickel industry as a result of two visits : one at the invitation of the Cuban Ministry of Basic Industries in 1987 and the other as a consultant to the United Nations for the Cuban Laterite Project in 1989.
