Several approaches to the estimation of the size discrete breakage rate and distribution parameters (kj and bi,j ) of the batch grinding kinetic model are available in the literature. Analysis of a large amount of data available in the literature and our own data on several pure minerals and complex ores has shown that it is not always possible to obtain correct estimates of the two sets of parameters using known approaches as several widely different combinations of k and b parameters can sometimes simulate the batch grinding data reasonably accurately. It has been found that there are two main reasons: (i) all size classes are not well represented in the data and (ii) functional forms used for estimation of the two sets of parameters are sometimes chosen somewhat arbitrarily (especially in the case of complex ores), though they are actually uniquely related through size continuous breakage rate and distribution functions. A suitable experimental methodology has been described and demonstrated using some synthetic data and actual experimental data. A mill function approach, which does not require making any assumptions about the functional forms for k and b parameters, is also described and demonstrated. This approach is promising, but requires further development.

Traditional method of explicitly defining three-dimensional (3D) ore-waste and geological boundaries relies heavily on a time-consuming process of manual digitisation. This method of modelling can be best described as surface modelling, as complex surface geometry is built up by digitising points that lie on the surface. With the advent of fast 3D interpolation methods, however, construction of geological surfaces using volume functions is now a practical alternative to explicit modelling of surfaces. Unlike explicit modelling, surfaces contained in volume functions are not explicitly defined or digitised. Instead the existence of surfaces in the volume function is implicit, thus the process of modelling surfaces from volume function is called æimplicit modellingÆ. Based on recent advances in fast scattered data interpolation methods, implicit modelling first defines a continuous three-dimensional function that describes the grade or rock distribution. This volumetric function is interrogated for a grade value, or a geological surface, thus allowing the extraction of the 3D object to be automated and eliminating the need to manually digitise surfaces. Since the function is continuous throughout space and does not depend on a mesh or grid for its definition, the extracted geological or grade wireframes can be constructed at any desired resolution in the specific volume of interest. The volume modelling method can work on scattered drillhole data of any data density, including processing combined information from dense grade control data as well as sparse resource drilling. It offers distinct advantages over surface modelling, including: being able to wireframe geological objects that may take days to digitise in tens of minutes; substantial improvement in modelling accuracy; and the ability to generate conditional models rapidly allowing mining risks inherent in geological modelling to be examined.

"The Sistema de Potabilización Área Norte project (Northern Area Purification System) was a major expansion of the potable water system in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The aim of the project was to transport and purify raw water from the Paraná River to provide potable water for five communities in the northern part of the province, benefitting up to two million people. The project was constructed by a joint venture (JV) of four South American contractors and consisted of the following key components:• Treatment plant: A 16-ha (39-acre) area was cleared for the construction of a treatment plant to purify 900,000 m3/day (1.2 million cu ft/d) of raw water from the Paraná River and distribute it to the surrounding communities.• Bored tunnel: Nearly 15 km (9 miles) of 3.6 m (12 ft) inner diameter tunnel, ranging from 18 to 22 m (59 ft to 72 ft) below grade, was bored with two earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) to draw the raw water from the river. The TBMs started from a central launch shaft and proceeded in opposite directions. Cristina advanced northbound to the Paraná River Intake System, and Liliana advanced southbound to the new treatment plant.• Access and ventilation shafts: Five access shafts and eight ventilation shafts were installed along the length of the tunnel. The access shafts were designed to provide entry points for inspection and maintenance of the final tunnel. The five shafts consisted of one central launch shaft in the middle of the tunnel alignment, one retrieval shaft at each end of the tunnel (intake and treatment plant, respectively) and two intermediate shafts. The intermediate shafts were installed before the TBM passed, with a final liner to be installedafterward."

[Recovery of core specimens from subsurface formations and their subsequent analysis are important aids in efficient development and operation of oil and gas fields. Core specimens first were obtained mainly for the geologic information they revealed; now they are analyzed to determine many of the physical characteristics and conditions of tae subsurface formations as well. Cores recovered from the producing formations may be analyzed for porosity, permeability, oil content, "connate" water content, and other physical and chemical properties of the formation, all to the end of furnishing enough data for making reliable estimates of the quantity and availability of oil and gas within a reservoir and in devising, efficient means for their withdrawal.]

There are many factors which affect the gold cyanidation mechanism— mineral composition, free cyanide and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations, heavy metal additions, etc. This study combines electrochemistry and surface analysis methods to examine the effectiveness of the above factors on gold cyanidation process. Three gold ore samples were used in this study. Sample 1 was a pyrite concentrate, contained mercury and silver. Sample 2 also contained sulfide minerals, including galena. Sample 3 contained pyrite with sphalerite and galena. In the case of samples 1 and 2, the presence of heavy metals enhanced gold cyanidation kinetics, though the addition of higher DO was not effective on improving the kinetics. Sample 3 showed an opposite behavior: the kinetics was not enhanced by galena, because of its relatively small amount, however, the use of higher DO made improvement in the gold leaching kinetics, likely caused by iron species generated by pyrite oxidation.

"This paper expands the SAG mill survey database published by the Author at Procemin 2013. The new database includes 49 published SAG/AG mill surveys and includes mills from all over the world. The paper will compare the survey database to SAG mill models by Austin, Morrell and Hogg & Fuerstenau with the purpose of demonstrating the degree of fit of the models to surveys and validating any empirical “fitting factors” used in the models.SAG mill power draw models are used in mill design and grinding circuit modelling to predict how much power will be consumed by a particular mill geometry and operating configuration. The importance of conducting surveys suited to model calibration will be highlighted because the review of literature shows that survey information important to modelling is often missing or omitted. A recommendation for the collection of data during a mill survey is presented, along with some assumptions used by the Author in the absence of certain data. The benefit to mining companies of publishing their survey data, and thereby allowing modellers to improve their model calibration, is discussed.The comparison of models requires a discussion of the measurement of power in a mill drive system as the models use slightly different position in the electrical network for ""where power is measured"". The benchmarking of models against plant operations requires a similar discussion of power measurement."

A U.S. Bureau of Mines designed and fabricated in-seam tester (1ST), retrofitted with a dust shroud, was used to establish a respirable dust index (RDI) and to determine cutting forces from a variety of bit types in four coal mines and a salt mine. Results from cutting tests at four coal mines showed that radial bits required the lowest cutting force and the least specific energy. Generally, for each conical bit the RDI and cutting force increased when the included bit tip angles increased from 70° to 90°. During field tests it was not possible to measure the total quantity of respirable dust produced by each cut; therefore, attempts were made to determine the amount of dust that became airborne from each test cut. The test results show that the quantity of airborne respirable dust is very erratic and cannot be related to bit type. Two statistical methods were employed to analyze RDI, but no correlation was found between the RDI and bit type. Despite scatter in test results for RDI, significant difference was found in RDI generated in four coal seams. In general, RDI increased with the increased cutting force for each coal seam from mine 1 through mine 4.

(4) Wide acceptance of heavy galvanizing by the steel industry. (5) Construction of the first commercial wire electroplating plant for putting on heavy coats of pure zinc. (6) Firm establishment and appreciable expansion of the practice of using zinc dust as a reducing agent in the organic chemical industry.

This paper describes the application of a cable disc elevator to continuous lift ore vertically from underground mines. Application of this system requires the tensions developed within the cable must remain within the carrying capacity of the cable including applicable safety margins. A critical element occurs at starting the system when it is fully loaded which requires the force developed by the system to exceed the static friction forces. This paper describes the laboratory rig developed to investigate the static friction forces. Details of the results of tests on three different ores for both dry and wet conditions are given. These results are discussed.

Consumption of Diesel fuel oil in the United States has increased very rapidly during recent years. At the present time approximately 5 percent of the crude oil refined in this country is said to be processed for this purpose. This figure represents approximately 20 percent of the total distillate-type fuel oils now being produced in the United States. One factor contributing greatly to the recent increase in consumption of Diesel fuel oil has been the conversion from steam locomotives to Diesel engines by a number of railroads. Other contributing factors are greFl.ter use of Diesel engine8 in buses, trucks, tractors, water craft, and stationary power plants. The growing importance of Diesel fuel oil has resulted in a need by the petroleum industry, engine manufacturers, and consumers for more information regarding the types and quality of Diesel fuels currently being marketed. To supply this information, the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United states Department of the Interior, under a cooperative agreement, have conducted a survey of Diesel fuel all produced in refineries in this country during 1950. Under the agreements, samples of Diesel fuel oil, representative of actual shipments, were analyzed by the manufacturers in accordance with instructions issued by the Fuel Survey Panel of the Automotive Research Committee of the American Petroleum Institute. Results of the analyses were transmitted to the Bureau of Mines, and that agency has studied the data and compiled them by groups in comparable form as shown in the tables of this report.

O Alto-Forno 2 da thyssenkrupp CSA, no Rio de Janeiro, iniciou sua primeira campanha em 16 de dezembro de 2010. No decorrer de sua campanha, verificou-se problemas de deslocamento de staves de ferro fundido, deformação dos staves de cobre e desgaste acentuado do refratário do top cone. Na análise dos eventos adotou-se a inspeção por vídeo endoscopia e em seguida foram tomadas algumas ações para recuperação e preservação do Alto-Forno 2, sendo estendidas também do Alto-Forno 1. Dentre as ações de preservação dos Altos-Fornos destaca-se a projeção robotizada de material refratário, shotcrete, visando reduzir o desgaste acentuado dos staves e deterioração de suas tubulações de refrigeração. O trabalho apresenta o detalhamento das técnicas utilizadas e seleção de materiais assim como os preparativos operacionais que garantiram o bom desempenho do Alto-Forno 2 nos momentos que antecederam a parada e após seu retorno à operação, mostrando que a atividade é viável do ponto de vista técnico e financeiro.

BECAUSE of its simplicity, the dip needle is widely used for locating magnetic rock formations in drift-covered areas. Although it responds only to strong magnetic disturbances, it has the advantage that surveys with it can be carried out rapidly, at relatively low cost, by untrained operators. More accurate surveys can be made with a much more sensitive instrument known as the magnetometer, but this must be operated by a specialist and the resulting survey costs are much higher. Mining men use the dip needle for the location of magnetic ores or mineral deposits associated with magnetic rocks. In certain districts, a survey with the dip needle may aid in solving geological structure. In the Little Long Lac and Crow River gold camps of Ontario, it has recently been used for these purposes. In interpreting the results of a dip needle survey, an understanding of the chief magnetic and mechanical factors determining the dip recorded by the needle is definitely necessary. For example, many observers locate a magnetic body by the highest dip values, apparently unaware that these frequently may not lie directly above the body. It should also be realized that a careful dip needle survey may yield information regarding the dip, breadth, and perhaps depth, of the magnetic body. Moreover, the observer should know when numerous closely-spaced dip readings are necessary, and when the dip may be measured at more widely separated intervals. The purpose of the following article is primarily to describe the factors affecting the registration of the dip needle, with a view to aiding investigators in a more accurate and complete interpretation of their results. To explain the cause of magnetic disturbances (anomalies) and the action of the dip needle, a knowledge of certain fundamental magnetic terms is necessary.

The CSA Mine is located in Cobar, New South Wales and is operated by Glencore. Large scale underground production started from 1965, with zinc, lead, silver and copper extracted in the past. The current operations focus on copper, with a silver co-product.From 2014 to 2016, Cobar Management Pty Ltd (CMPL) undertook a major capital project to upgrade the primary ventilation system at the CSA Mine. This involved the development of ten raises using full-face raise boring from surface to a depth of 1450 m. The total length of the raises was approximately 2500 m. Geotechnical conditions were identified as a key project risk during the early planning stages of the project. Timely quantification of the geotechnical risks was required to minimise project delays and cost overruns. Geotechnical investigations were planned and conducted for each raise prior to pilot drilling and full-face back reaming.Nine of the ten raises had final wall camera and laser baseline surveys completed following full-face reaming. The surveys were conducted progressively, allowing ongoing back analysis and calibration of geotechnical evaluations as the project advanced.This paper presents the design and planning process of the raise bored excavations. It details the geotechnical investigation work undertaken to mitigate the geotechnical risks and the challenges and learnings from the project including the benefits of close collaboration between the parties involved.CITATION:Sidea, D and Brettell, T M, 2017. Abstract Spectrographic methods for the analysis of minor constituents such as platinum-group metals, gold, silver, and silica in palladium and platinum refinery sponge are described. These involve the conversion of the sponge metals to the black form by reduction with high purity aluminum filings in either acid or alkaline media. Standards of known composition are prepared in the same manner from either refinery or spectrographically standardized sponge metals. Samples of the black metals are mounted in pellet form and a multisource spark discharge used for excitation. The range of concentrations of impurities studied are those common to refinery samples. Excellent reproducibility of intensity ratios using major constituents as internal standards, is demonstrated and two methods have noted by which the accuracy of the procedures are shown to be of the order of 3 per cent, on the basis of synthetic preparations. Introduction During the past two years an investigation has been carried out in the Spectrographic Laboratory, Queen's University, to determine the suitability of modern spectrographic techniques for the precise analysis of the platinum-group metals palladium, platinum, rhodium, iridium, and ruthenium in the form of refinery sponge analyzing about 99 per cent of the major constituent.

ZEST in the search for new supplies of metallic ores and petroleum is difficult to maintain with stocks of raw materials accumulating and with over- production rightly or wrongly blamed for most of our industrial troubles. Enthusiasm over new methods of prospecting has consequently diminished and exploration programs in many fields have been drastically cur- tailed. Very naturally the effects have been felt with particular keeness in highly specialized phases of the work, such as geophysical prospecting, for the feverish scramble for new areas in which to drill beneath magnetic or electrical anomalies has abated, and there is even a lull in the firing in the battle over salt domes on the Gulf Coast. It is unquestionably an unhappy time for many of the organizations dependent on this work, but in certain respects the situation may be beneficial in correcting unsound practices that .have grown up through the necessity for haste and for quick decisions. With the restriction of the field to the more competent workers by the harsh rule of survival of the fittest, a general improvement, not only in technique but in business methods, can be expected which may go far in restoring public confidence. "The foamed converter charges were up to 3 8 per month in Xstrata Copper Smelter at Mount Isa. The issue of high converter foamover frequency had remained unsolved for many decades in Mount Isa. A thermodynamic model of copper P-S converter and a viscosity model of converter slag have been developed to simulate the slag blow and copper blow, in order to understand the mechanism of converter foamover. The model predicts the chemistry and viscosity of slag during slag blow and copper blow. The effects of oxygen potential, charge of dirty reverts, slag carryover, under-blowing, over-blowing, and temperature on the foamover and viscosity of slag in copper blow have been discussed. A theory has been developed to understand the mechanism of converter foamover. The practical solutions have also been developed and implemented in Mount Isa Copper Smelter. Some improvements of the industrial operations have been presented. After a series of improvements, the number of foamed charges per month in the converter operations has been decreased significantly from 35 in Aug 2008 to only one per month in 2009/2010.1. IntroductionThe Copper Smelter in Mount Isa receives the concentrate containing about 25% copper and produces anode copper that contains about 99% copper. There are several stages in the process. The first stage carries out in the ISASMELT™ furnace. The ISASMELT™ process produces a molten copper matte containing about 60% copper. An iron-silica slag and a sulfur dioxidebearing off-gas are the by-products of the process. The slag is taken to the slag dams for cooling before it is recycled through the Mount Isa Copper Concentrator.The matte is sent to Peirce-Smith converters. The converters further remove iron and sulphur to produce blister copper which contains about 97% copper. The anode furnaces remove any remaining sulphur and oxygen to produce anode copper that is about 99. 7% pure. This is cast into anodes and sent to the Xstrata Copper Refinery in Townsville for final refining.In the copper pyrometallurgical industrials, slag foaming is an important phenomena which occurs when the gas bubbles have stability and not rupture. Foaming greatly increases the interfacial area between matte, slag and gas and is essential for the operation of high intensity smelting processes. However, foaming or foamover is undesirable in P-S converter since it can damage the equipment and injure the operators. Figure 1 shows that the whole process of a foamover development in a converter."

This paper, one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of mining at various mica mines in the United States, describes the methods now in use in the principal mica mines of the Southern Appalachian States. Those papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in some instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue.

A study of the production of coronene , a high - melting ( 440 ° C ) , highboiling ( 525 ° C) , polynuclear hydrocarbon , was made by the Bureau of Mines to determine the maximum yield obtainable by the hydrogenation of coal and coalderived materials . Experiments were made with anthracite and bituminous coals and with asphaltenes and centrifuged residue obtained from heavy oil produced in a pilot plant by the hydrogenation of a bituminous coal at 2,000 psi and 480 ° C. With anthracite , yields of coronene of 0.5 to 0.7 wt pct of moistureand ash - free coal were obtained at 6,000 to 8,000 psi , 700 ° to 750 ° C , and a residence time of 30 minutes . With bituminous coal , yields averaging 0.4 wt pct of maf coal were obtained at 6,000 psi , 800 ° C , and 30 minutes ' residence time . With asphaltene and centrifuged residue , yields of less than 0.02 wt pct of maf coal were obtained at 6,000 psi , 700 ° C , and 60 minutes ' residence time .

No atual cenário econômico as siderúrgicas estão buscando cada vez mais a redução dos seus custos para a produção do aço, com o objetivo de manter-se competitiva neste mercado. O custo da manutenção refratária corresponde a um valor expressivo para a produção do aço, portanto trabalhos com objetivos de novas técnicas de manutenção para aumentar a produtividade, fazem com que estes custos sejam reduzidos. A CSN Porto Real é uma filial com vocação para o mercado automobilístico e possui um forno de galvanização. Conforme o plano de manuteção houve a necessidade de troca de todas as chapas de inox do forno da linha de galvanização, pois encontravam-se queimadas e com alto grau de deformação. Esta atividade, por motivo de histórico de execução em um forno vertical, sempre foi realizada com a utilização de um grande volume de andaime e de mão de obra, tendo assim um alto custo para a sua execução. Este trabalho foi fruto do estudo para redução do custo de manutenção com a aplicação da técnica de Alpinismo Industrial para se aumentar a produtividade.

"Under the term ""paleogeomorphology"" are grouped together all geo-morphological phenomena which are recognizable in subsurface geology. Since geomorphology is the science of the earth's relief features, paleogeomorphology is the science of buried relief features. Such features are of importance to the petroleum geologist whenever they lead to the trapping of hydrocarbons. In areas where these features abound -and western Canada certainly is such an area -pale-ogeomorphology ranks in importance with stratigraphy and structural geology as a hydrocarbon-finding tool. Hydrocarbons may be trapped either directly or indirectly due to paleogeomorphological processes. Both types of traps may occur either below the morphological surface or above (against) it. Several examples of types of paleogeomorphological traps are given. A new classification of geomorphological .features is proposed, with a subdivision into two main groups: constructive and destructive geomorphic processes. Of the many geomorphic classifications, some are of greater interest to the petroleum geologist in western -Canada than others. In the present paper the morphology of reefs and of buried erosional land forms are discussed in greater detail. In dealing with the reefs of the Devonian Leduc formation in Alberta, it is found that several groups of reefs can be distinguished and that each group presents a separate set of morphological characteristics. The effects of erosion and weathering are exemplified mostly in the Devonian, Mississippian and Jurassic of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Hydrocarbon traps occur below the highs on the erosional surface as well as in sands laid down in the lows of that surface. The rules which govern the formation of ancient landscape forms are worked out, using an area in southeastern Saskatchewan as an example."
