One of the most difficult challenges in underground mining is to forecast significant seismic events prior to their occurrence in order to support the safety of miners and to minimize damage to the underground operation. Passive seismic tomography is a tool to image the seismic velocity changes in a rockmass, which can potentially reveal the rockmass behavior before and after a significant seismic event. In this paper, the changes in seismic velocity of the rockmass before and after three major seismic events are investigated to determine whether there are identifiable precursory velocity changes associated with the major seismic events. Conventional mechanics imply that the induced stress at the hypocenter would continue increasing until failure, in the form of an induced seismic event, occurs. With passive seismic tomography we can image changes to the seismic wave velocity distribution within a rockmass and hence infer the changes to the induced stress near the hypocenter. This paper evaluates the hypothesis that induced stress at the hypocenter (as inferred by the p-wave velocity) increases until the seismic event occurs. In addition to analyzing p-wave velocity changes near the hypocenter, changes to the p-wave velocity at “zone centers” were also analyzed. These “zone centers” are regions within the rockmass that consistently have a p-wave velocity that is much higher than the average p-wave velocity for the rockmass. It is found that the p-wave velocity did not increase at any of the three hypocenters prior to the seismic event occurring, however the p-wave velocity did increase in the closest “zone center” for two of the three events.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research aimed at providing technology for a low-cost, high-recovery, environmentally acceptable mining system to recover the vast thin-seam coal reserves existing in the mountainous areas of the Appalachian region in the Eastern United States. As part of this research, the Bureau is evaluating new techniques to address these coal resources. This report summarizes the results of a worldwide technical search on thin-seam coal mining, the formulation of various methodologies for mining mountaintop thin seams, and the implementation and status of a physical model test program to validate and further develop the most promising concept-the "roof-fall-tolerant" mining system.

This Bureau of Mines publication identifies areas having sufficient coal reserves to support synthetic natural gas (SNG) development and summarizes those areas having the highest potential. Capital requirements, mining and coal cost factors, water availability, and coal-quality data pertinent to SNG production are presented. Evaluation of individual coal reserve blocks was based upon coal and water requirements of the Bureau of Mines Synthane coal gasification process.

Shotcrete has become a strategic component of support in underground mines. The ductility of reinforced shotcrete makes it a safe and economic means of surface support under adverse static and dynamic loads. The ability of ductile shotcrete to sustain load at large deflections enables excavations in squeezing conditions to be stabilized and the safety in excavations subject to rock bursting, to be assured. A Shotcrete Working Group was formed to find the configurations of fibre reinforcement that would give shotcrete the same ductility as when reinforced with mesh. Beams and panels reinforced with various types and lengths of fibre were accordingly tested. A single mix design consisting of river sand, ordinary Portland cement, fly ash, condensed silica fume and gunite dust and segregation suppressant was used. Steel and polypropylene fibre varying in length from 25 to 50 mm were used in nominal contents of 5 % and 0.5% by mass respectively. Beams, panels and control specimens were shot into specially made formers. Suitable mixing procedures were developed for the different types of fibre. The test specimens were shot in a semi-dry mix process. The shotcrete was cured until tested 28 days after shooting. The fibre contents and uniaxial compressive and Brazilian tensile strengths of the shotcrete were determined from the control specimens. The beams and panels were tested in bending in specially manufactured test rigs. The beams were examined for simple supports and fixed ends. The panels were fixed in a manner that simulated underground conditions and were loaded statically under uniform pressure. The beams were loaded and the corresponding deflections measured up to failure. The panels were loaded up to mid-span deflections of 150 mm. The results are presented in the form of load-deflection graphs. The peak loads and ultimate deflections for the fixed end beams were considerably larger than for the simply supported beams for the various types of fibre considered. None of the beams tested, however, were able to sustain load at relatively constant value beyond the peak load. The panel tests showed that 40 mm and 50 mm long steel fibre and 30 mm, 40 mm and 50 mm long monofilament polypropylene fibre reinforcement gave shotcrete the same ductility as mesh.

Many concepts concerning equipment selection, performance prediction, and evaluation of support requirements for tunnel construction in soil or hard rock tunnels cannot be extrapolated directly for application in soft rock (compressive strength between 1.0 and 35.0 MPa). Case histories for small diameter (less than 3.5 m) tunnels in Austin, Texas, are analyzed to gain insight into particular problems encountered during tunnel excavation in weak sedimentary rock, and the performance of different excavation systems are compared.

Many future and current block and panel caves extract ore from veined rock masses. These rock masses are composed of open joints forming blocks or rock with healed networks of veinlets. These two types of discontinuities pose a challenge for rock mass characterisation and classification due to difficulties in distinguishing actually open joints from healed but weak veins when diamond core drilling and excavation blasting practices disturb the rock mass. The inability of separating characteristics of open joints and healed veins has often resulted in an underestimation of the rock mass quality and as a consequence led to inappropriate assessments of rock mass response to mining (ie rock mass behaviour) and consequently deficient excavation stability assessments and ground support designs. In this paper, guidelines are provided to improve the characterisation and classification of veined rock masses. It is shown how veined rock masses can be mischaracterised resulting in often incorrect forecasting of rock mass behaviour. Following this, the classification of veined rock masses is examined. It is shown how the primary classification systems (ie Q – Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974; rock mass rating (RMR) – Bieniawski, 1976) may not lead to reliable ratings in veined rock masses if care is not taken to differentiate between open joints and veins of varying strength. Examples are provided to illustrate how the Q and RMR systems are insensitive to veining. Finally, an example of characterising a veined rock mass for design purposes is presented.CITATION:Bewick, R P and Kaiser, P K, 2016. Increasing public concern over the welfare of the environment has placed demands on the mining industry to evaluate the environmental impact of mining development. This is a difficult task and involves considering the influence of a multitude of variables on complex processes over a long time period. Few studies which focus on the evaluation of the environmental impact of mining have been conducted and, therefore, there is little past experience to rely upon. This article describes some of the work done to evaluate the potential environmental impact of mining development in Minnesota. Interest in developing the major copper and nickel sulfide deposits near the wilderness areas of northeastern Minnesota aroused concern regarding the environmental impact of mining development in the region. As a result laboratory and field studies were initiated to investigate the potential for trace metal leaching and acid generation due to dissolution of Duluth gabbro. Chemical equilibrium computer modeling was conducted to aid in data interpretation. The goals of the study included the investigation of leaching mechanisms and rates of release (1, 2).

Utilization of both slag and its heat for hot slag is a great challenge for iron and steel industry. Many methods of hot slag modification for directly converting hot slag into value-added materials were researched in recent years, and waste heat of hot slag could thereby be transformed into inner energy or chemical energy of the materials. In this paper, an experiment of converting hot slag directly into glass ceramics by hot slag modification method was conducted. A cooled modifiers mainly composed of fly ash were firstly heated though a cyclone furnace and then fell into a molten bath to mix with hot steel slag. Half of hot slag was used as raw materials and accordingly about half energy consumption, about 5MJ/kg for melting raw materials was saved in the process compared with that of traditional producing method. Frit quenched from the modified hot slag had a higher basicity of 0.6-0.7 than traditional frits in order to reduce the needed amount of cold modifiers and accordingly utilize more hot slag and its waste heat. Glass ceramics were further prepared from the frit and a heat treatment of one-stage method is more suiter to such frit than that of two-stage method. The glass-ceramics with basicity of 0.6 and heat-treated by one stage method had the best performance with bending strength of 146.46 MPa, Vickers hardness of 6.79 GPa, water absorption rate of below 2% and shrinkage rate of around 10%.

Oregon Resources Corporation (ORC), an industrial minerals mining company, is currently engaged in the development of a new process design that will allow the unique paleo-beach placer deposits of southwestern Oregon to be mined efficiently and economically, creating an additional domestic source for chromite, garnet, and zircon. Engineering design has been guided by the variable geology and mineralogy of the paleo-beach placer deposits as well as the need for a dry tailing scheme that resolves a lack of water resources at the placer locations and at the same time eliminates the need for slurry settling ponds, typical of paleo-beach placer operations in North America. Metallurgical study of the placer material was grouped into four distinct samples based on marine terrace deposition, geological facies, and mineralogy. Because the metallurgical samples represented the extremes likely to be encountered in all future Oregon paleo-beach placer ores, the process design is highly dynamic and will successfully adjust to meet the production needs. Water availability at the mining area is seasonal and will not support a typical placer operation?s water requirement needs for heavy mineral concentration. For this reason, ORC has developed a plan to construct the ore processing facilities near Coos Bay, where a municipal source of water is available. Raw ore will be transported from the mining sites approximately twenty miles one way to the processing facility with return loads hauling tailings back to the active pit. The need to haul dry tailings, return dry material to the pit for reclamation, and limit the amount of water being purchased from the municipality has driven the design of a unique water reclamation system. BACKGROUND Location and Access Economic concentrations of ?black sand? or heavy mineral (minerals with specific gravity greater than 2.85) have been recognized and studied in marine placers from Coos Bay to the mouth of the Rogue River, a distance of approximately 75 miles along the southern Oregon coast (Hornor, 1918; Griggs, 1945)(Figure 1). ORC will begin mining existing reserves approximately 20 miles south of Coos Bay in a region known locally as Seven Devils. Ore will be trucked north to the processing site near Coos Bay via use of existing county and state roads, including U.S. 101. The available facilities at the processing site include highway, rail, municipal water and electricity, natural gas, and a deep water port. At the time of this writing, the rail line had been abandoned, but was being pursued by the International Port of Coos Bay. It is anticipated that this will be serviceable at some time in the future. History The southern Oregon marine placers have garnered the interests of miners since 1852, when present day beaches were exploited for gold. The beach deposits were small and irregular in nature and were easily washed away by the major storms the coast endures during the winter months (Hornor, 1918). [ ] In the 1920?s, deposits at the beach were followed upstream to their paleo-beach terrace origins (Pardee, 1934). These terrace placers were mined, but with little success, as the cost of mining and processing was greater than at the present day beach deposits. The greatest effort to understand and delineate the paleo-beach terrace placers came during World War II. As the need for a domestic source of steel hardening chromite was evident, the heavy mineral bearing placers of southwestern Oregon provided just that. The U.S. Geological Survey, under guidance from the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries, began exploration drilling of the paleo-beach terraces in 1940 (Griggs, 1945). This work was part of the investigation of strategic mineral deposits and would ultimately supply much needed chromite for the war efforts. Investigation of an extensive deposit of chromite-bearing actinolite-talc schist situated on the summit of Casper Mountain, 10 miles south of Casper, Wyo., was one of the first projects Undertaken by the Bureau of Mines under the Strategic Materials Act (Public 117, 76th Cong., Ch. 190, 1st sess.), for which an appropriation became available August 9, 1939. During the previous summer; the Geological Survey? made? a magnetometrical survey of the area in which the schist occurred. It was exposed in several small lenses and two larger ones aggregating about 19?acres in area. Although the occurrence of chromite here had been known for many years, the only work done on the deposit was the digging of? a few shallow pits on some of the more promising outcrops. From August 23 to December 3, 1939, the Bureau of Mines investigated the larger of the two main schist bodies. Twenty-four trenches having a total length of 8,073 feet were dug across the deposit, and its subsurface extension was explored by 3,623 feet of diamond drilling. Over 32 tons of samples were shipped to the Metallurgical Division of the Bureau of Mines at Reno, Nev., for reduction, analysis, and ore testing. In all, there were 853 individual samples. Geological maps, based upon examination of outcrops, trenches, and drill cores, as well as a contour map of the area were made by the Geological Survey.

The most common method for the concentration of cyanide in gold leach circuits is based on the titration of cyanide ions with silver ions. This can either be done manually as a titration with a visual end-point or by using one of several commercial cyanide analysers which are 'based on the same titration but use a potentiometric end point This method has 'its limitations in the case of some ores such as those containing high amounts of soluble copper and those that are treated at low (less than pH 9) pH values in that the titration results do not accurately reflect the concentration of cyanide which is available for the dissolution of gold. This paper will present the results of the development of a novel "active" cyanide analyser which is based on the rate, of the reaction between gold colloids and cyanide. Gold colloids have a deep red colour and can be very simply prepared and stored for extended periods of time when stabilized. t has been shown that colloidal gold behaves similarly to metallic gold, dissolving in aerated sodium cyanide solutions to give the colourless Au(CNh-ion, This allows the reaction between the colloids and cyanide to be monitored spectrophotometrically at 520 nm. An automated instrument has been developed around this concept which can analyse a filtered pulp stream every few minutes with periodic calibration using standard cyanide solutions, Results of test work on synthetic solutions and solutions derived from several Australian gold plants will be presented as will the results of a comparative evaluation with a commercial titration analyser on a local gold plant

Calcium carbonate/Titanium dioxide composite, characterized by coating TiO2 on the surface of CaCO3 particles, is an important substitute for titanium dioxide. This paper studies preparation method of CaCO3/TiO2 ,composites based on mechano-chemical effects, measures its properties as a pigment, analyzes the binding form and interface reaction mechanism between CaCO3 and TiO2. Through single finely grinding of CaCO3, co-grinding of CaCO3 together with TiO2, and mecha-no-chemical effects produced in the course of grinding, CaCO3/TiO2 composites can be prepared successfully. Results indicate that grinding fineness of CaCO3, co-grinding time of CaCO3 and TiO2, the weight ratio of grinding media to mineral feeding, and the amount of TiO2 have much influence on the properties of CaCO3/TiO2 composites. CaCO3/TiO2 composites have the properties same as titanium dioxide pigment, oil adsorption and ultraviolet adsorption same as TiO2, and 90% of hiding power as that of TiO2. Wet grinding of CaCO3 causes the production of mechano-chemical effect and hydroxyl group, through which CaCO3 and TiO2 can be bonded together. Repulsion occurs between the particles of CaCO3 and the particles of TiO2, respectively, they are both in good dispersion. But attraction occurs between CaCO3 and TiO2. TiO2 particles are distributed evenly on the surface of CaCO3. Therefore, coating of TiO2 on the surface of CaCO3 particles and chemical bond between them make CaCO3/TiO2 compo-sites have pigment properties of Titanium.

South Bulga is a new longwall operation located in the Hunter Valley coal-mining region in Southeastern Australia. The mine’s objective is to achieve productivity levels significantly higher than the current industry average. From the day longwall production began, South Bulga’s output was below both budget and industry expectations, primarily because of the poor performance of the conveyor system. In the past, conveyor systems have been seen as an adjunct to the mine plan, not as an integral part. At past production levels, this approach may have been acceptable. In today’s mining operations, the conveyor system must be treated as integral and vital to the mining operation. The conveyor system is analogous to the vascular or circulatory system of the human body. Of itself, the system does not do anything, but if it is not functioning satisfactorily, the mine cannot operate.

The Onemana prospect is located on the eastern Coromandel Peninsula, North Island, New Zealand. Systematic exploration involving surface geological mapping, geophysics, rock and soil geochemistry, reverse-circulation and diamond drilling has identified a number of important features of a fossil hydrothermal system at Onemana. This relatively intact gold mineralised system is hosted within a sequence of rhyolitic volcanics and volcaniclastics, overlain by lake sediments, sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccia. The system lies within a graben/half graben bounded by major NE-trending faults which form the approximate boundaries to hydrothermal alteration. Rock and soil geochemistry indicate a broad zone of anomalous gold, silver, arsenic, mercury and antimony. Overlapping elevated rock and soil gold anomalies indicate strongest mineralisation occurs over two zones of hydrothermal brecciation named 'Breccia Knob' and 'Western Ridge'. Geophysical data obtained from Gradient Array Resistivity and Ground Magnetics have been used to produce anomaly maps. The terrain corrected resistivity plot shows a number of well defined linear resistivity anomalies which are believed to represent large silicified and quartz veined bodies at relatively shallow depths. The strongest of these anomalies correspond with 'Breccia Knob' and 'Western Ridge'. Reverse-circulation and diamond drilling targeting these resistivity and geochemical anomalies has confirmed wide intervals of quartz veining, silicification and gold mineralisation. Petrologic data based on drill samples indicates the existence of a laterally extensive gold bearing epithermal system. Hydrothermal alteration is thought to have been caused by strongly convecting, two-phase (boiling), near-neutral chloride fluids which persisted at high temperatures (170 - 220¦C) to the paleosurface. A geological model is postulated of a large, complex, hydrothermal system developed in a shallow lake or marginal lake environment created by rifting and graben development within a recently extinct rhyolitic volcanic centre. Geothermal activity alternated between relatively quiescent periods of unrestricted fluid upflow and sinter development interspersed with violent hydrothermal eruptions caused by near surface silica capping and overpressuring above a major fluid conduit centred under 'Breccia Knob'.  Opportunities for precious metal mineralisation are evident from drilling to date. Upflow of near-neutral chloride fluids to shallow depths favours the presence of strongly mineralised stockworks at relatively shallow depths. Periodic hydrothermal eruptions would have caused fracturing and rapid depressurisation of the hydrothermal system, strongly favouring the precipitation of gold from solution both near surface and within feeder-vein systems at depth.

It is generally recognized that if the lose and contamination of the fluid content of a core specimen from an oil- and gas-bearing formation in a well were eliminated, the value of core analysis would be increased greatly. In an effort to obtain uncontaminated cores, extensive field tests were carried out in the Mercy field, San Jacinto County, Tex., with the Carter pressure core barrel and an oil-base drilling fluid having very low rates of filtration as measured by the standard A.P.I. drilling-fluid filter teat. A tracer was added to the drilling fluid filter test. A tracer was added to the drilling fluid to provide a means for quantitatively measuring the volume of oil filtrate in the cores. Unfortunately, as stated in the report on the Mercy tests, very little oil nand was penetrated in coring the well; and because the performance of the pressure core barrel was not entirely satisfactory, the tests did not provide a complete answer to the question: Does a filtrate from an oil-base drilling fluid enter cores., and how does it affect the results of the core analyses?

Operational readiness is a commonly used term in mining and many other industry settings. However, translating this term into a coherent scope of work that is practical and meaningful is a challenge faced by many mining projects. This inhibits the allocation of resources to the work and its completion. The problem is with understanding how the terminology applies to establishing a mining operation. Resolving this problem requires clarity around what operational readiness means for a mining project’s transition to operations and who owns the tasks of completing operational readiness. The motivation for resolution of this problem is in appreciating the consequences arising from any lack of clarity in definition of this task, the timing of the work, and ownership for its completion. In broad terms, these consequences amount to an erosion of value at a critical time for both the new mine and the company and shareholders. This situation often arises where operational readiness is not adequately addressed in project’s study phases. As a result, neither time, resources nor money are adequately provided to complete the work required. In other cases, operational readiness is sometimes assimilated with the delivery of the project’s physical assets by the project’s construction team, rather than aligned with the establishment of the operating team to deliver the desired operational outputs. This paper argues that operational readiness starts in a project’s study phases and flows through into the start of operations. The definition of operational readiness is discussed as a task, and a model for its planning and completion is presented. This discussion includes assigning ownership for operational readiness planning and delivery to the General Manager of a new operation and the operations leadership team, who are central to the success of this work. After all, the reputations of this leadership team depend on the performance of the operation in its first few years. The author’s work over the last 20 years, leading operational readiness programs and the preparation of feasibility studies for mining projects, has provided the insights and evolution of ideas that are central to this paper. Operational readiness is fundamentally directed at ensuring a new mining operation gets away to a successful start and builds a solid foundation for the future of the mine/operation/province. It requires clarity of purpose, ownership and coordination by people in the operating team, and their preparation of the requisite process definition and establishment of the significant relationships required for operations. Without its successful completion, it is unlikely the new operation will meet and sustain its start-up targets. This paper discusses a practical approach to operational readiness for mining projects.

Current certification testing of self-contained breathing apparatus includes tests with human subjects wearing the apparatus while exercising. During these tests, certain apparatus variables are measured during rest periods. Because of concerns that the present tests may not accurately simulate the stresses to which an apparatus is subjected in the field, the Bureau of Mines proposed new human subject tests. It was also felt that different measurement techniques would supply more reliable data on the apparatus response to these stresses. The Los Alamos National Laboratory was asked by the Bureau to evaluate the proposed tests and monitoring techniques. The major conclusions derived during this study are these: (1) The proposed tests are not too physically demanding. (2) As long as human test subjects are used, a minimum subject weight should be required for certification tests. (3) Important apparatus variables are the breathing resistance, temperature, and carbon dioxide and oxygen concentrations of the inhaled gas. (4) Continuous monitoring should be used, rather than monitoring only during rest periods. (5) New pass/fail criteria based on realistic estimates of the user's physiological requirements, as tempered by present and future engineering limitations, are needed. (6) When available, breathing machines, rather than human subjects, should be used for most certification testing. (7) A more realistic ergonomics test than that proposed is needed. (8) A gas leak test for the system and a facepiece leakage test are also needed.

A deposit to be mined by underground methods can be accessed by a number of methods: ? Adit ? Decline or ramp ? Inclined shaft ? Vertical shaft. Adits are an economical approach when the orebody is above the general floor elevation i.e. suitable in hilly or mountainous terrain. Incline shafts are limited to relatively shallow deposits, and because they are developed on an incline, development lengths for a given depth are the three to five times longer than for a vertical shaft. Vertical shafts are the preferred method for deposits deeper than 300 m but the development rate is slow and construction costs are very high. Declines or ramps offer early access to shallow deposits, which develops the ore body expediently, but are generally developed at a gradient of approximately 12 per cent. Decline haulages have become an attractive alternative to shaft hoisting, and over recent years the role of decline access has become more widespread throughout South Africa. Traditionally, South Africa has enjoyed the use of shaft systems, largely due to the large knowledge base of mining the Witwatersrand Basin, where vertical and inclined shafts were the norm. South Africa has also had the advantage of cheap electricity, giving shafts a definite economic advantage. However, in recent years the national power utility ESKOM has undergone an expansion programme that has led to tariff increases of nearly 100% over a three-year period. Based on the changes in electricity tariffs and technological improvements to underground haulage trucks, the economic inputs to access development have changed. This paper reviews mine access for shallow deposits as currently applied in South Africa. Based on current economic inputs, the paper investigates at what point a vertical shaft would be more economical than a decline system utilizing typical South African mining equipment.

In mining coal in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania the general custom has been to leave a large percentage of the coal in place as pillars to support the roof. Evidently any practice that involves partial waste of an important mineral resource is bound to be discarded. It is well recognized that one method of obviating probable waste is to fill the workings with cheap or worthless materials, a process extensively employed in the anthracite and some European mines. At present many of the collieries in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania are utilizing refuse from the old culm banks, which formerly were prominent features in the landscape, and are flushing the fine waste underground so that pillars may be reduced in size or removed. As a result the banks are now disappearing and soon will be gone. The fine culm from the breakers and rock from the mines will continue to be available, but the volume of these materials is insufficient to replace any considerable proportion of the coal removed. The next stage of progress suggested is the use of sand. Fortunately there are available large deposits of this material, much of which can be handled by dredges and pumps. This report is issued by the Bureau of Mines in the interest of safer and more efficient mining methods. I ts purpose is to describe the sand deposits in the northern anthracite coal field in Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties, Pa, Much of the information available is presented in the map, Plate I. Field studies, mostly preliminary, were made in the summer of 1911 to determine the distribution, amount, and character of the larger deposits. It was not thought desirable to make a detailed examination of the region because when the coal companies decide to utilize the sand their engineers will make precise surveys and drill test holes. In preparing the map the various coal companies were consulted; they contributed a large number of facts, especially as to the deposits in the buried valley of the Susquehanna between Pittston and Nan- ticoke, where nearly 1,000 test holes have been bored. The results of these borings were placed at the author's disposal, and have been utilized in drawing the boundaries given in the wide valley area and its extensions up Lackawanna River and NewportCreek. Wyoming Valley contains deposits of sand that are 100 feet thick over a wide area, 200 feet thick in places, and over 300 feet thick in the deep old channel south of Plymouth.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and others have conducted a number of occupational exposure surveys since the publication of the International Agency for Research on Cancer report of 1989, which labeled diesel exhaust as a probable human carcinogen. These surveys have assessed diesel exhaust exposure using measurement of diesel aerosol and/or specific polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as indicators of exposure. This paper reviews present diesel emission standards, available diesel exhaust aerosol measurement techniques, and the results of the occupational exposure surveys. In the surveys, diesel aerosol was emphasized because it is a major component of diesel exhaust, is suspected to contribute to the health hazard, and is readily measurable. Three primary aerosol measurement techniques were used: respirable combustible dust, size-selective sampling, and measurement of the elemental carbon fraction. Occupations surveyed included mine workers, railroad workers, forklift operators, fire fighters and truck drivers. The studies found mean diesel aerosol concentration levels in the range of 0.004 to 1.74 mg/m3? Highest aerosol exposures were in confined spaces such as mines where heavy diesel equipment is used. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons typically are found at very low concentration levels and are not unique to diesel exhaust.
