"Fe-Ti oxides concentrates produced from heavy mineral sand deposits are widely used for the production of titanium dioxide pigments that are critical components of white paint, plastics and paper. According to mining industry, the Fe-Ti concentrates mostly consists of three phases: ilmenite, leucoxene and rutile. However, a few mineralogical studies have shown that the variety of Fe-Ti oxides found in sand deposits is far more complex, mostly due to alteration processes. The aim of this contribution is to characterize in detail by means of Qemscan analyses the mineralogy of the three main concentrates (ilmenite, leucoxene and rutile) produced by the Grande Côte Operation (GCO) mineralurgical plant in Senegal. The ultimate goal is to characterize the different products and textures formed during the natural ilmenite alteration processes, to localize the phases carrying the main impurities (Cr and P), and finally to determine the physical properties of each mineral component to improve metal recoveries. Along alteration processes, Ti content increase. Ilmenite (FeTiO3) is progressively transformed into pseudorutile (Fe2Ti3O9) particles which could also be altered and transformed into hydroxylian pseudorutile [FeTi6O12(OH)3.3H2O] or complex blends of anatase microcrystals (TiO2). These transformations are accompanied by significant changes in particle textures. Microporosity and fractures appear and the impurity content also increases. Anatase rich microcrystal assemblages, so far described as Leucoxene, could be identified to consist of grains with higher porosities, water contents and higher intrapore impurities. These particles are the main carriers of chromium and phosphorus. The observed mineral transition textures have a significant impact on the ore dressing processes. During these transformations, the physical properties of these phases change, the magnetic susceptibility as well as densities decreases, due to the increase in porosity. The separation of particles, especially those with high porosity will help improving the GCO mineralurgical plant performance and to reduce the impurity contents in finals products."

PETROBRAS started its Oil Shale process development in 1953, the PETROSIX process which was developed and tailored to Irati Oil Shale formation. Since 1991, the industrial plant called MI (Industrial Module) has been operating, producing more than 20 million barrels of oil. In order to continue the oil shale exploration, a new shale mine is been opening. This article reports the planed measures taking in order to limit the environmental impacts and to return the land as close as possible to the original condition, as well as with the disposition of the process waste and the city garbage. It shows that the remediation process starts during the mining activities and continues after the mine exploration. Another characteristic of the Petrosix process, the pyrolysis of tires will be focused.

The traditional comminution circuit is a major consumer of energy ? both as electrical energy and through consumption of media and wear resistant liners. Up to 40% of electrical energy con-sumed at a mine site is attributed to comminution however only a few percent of this energy is used in the generation of new surfaces from size reduction. This paper describes the evaluation of modifications using simulation models based on two operating comminution circuits. The aim of these modifications is to decrease both the amount of electrical energy consumed in the size reduction process, known as direct energy, as well as to decrease the consumption of grinding consumables such as steel grinding media and mill liners, designated as indirect energy. The approach is two-fold: ??Employ, where possible, autogenous grinding techniques to eliminate the need for grinding media and reduce mill liner wear. ??Optimise the use of the grinding energy distribution in the comminution circuit by using more energy efficient grinding devices to target typically problematic features of a comminution circuit such as critical size material from the primary mill and overgrinding in the secondary mill. The investigations show that significant total energy savings, as high as 50% in some cases, can be achieved by employing the techniques described while maintaining circuit throughput and product size. Investigations also show potential benefits in downstream flotation processes as the product size distribution generated from the eco-efficient circuit is generally ?narrower? in shape for improved flotation performance and containing less material in the coarse fraction for overall better liberation.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the methods and results of many of the laboratory studies on spontaneous heating of coal published in the last 50 years. It includes a brief description of experimental methods, indices of combustibility, and important contributing factors. Adiabatic calorimetry, isothermal calorimetry, [0], sorption systems, or temperature differential are the most frequently used experimental methods. Indices of combustibility include various heating rates, crossing point temperature, ignition temperature, and CO index. Factors that affect the spontaneous heating of coal include air flow rate, changes in moisture content, particle size, rank, temperature, pyrite content, geological factors, and mining practice. Experimental conditions and results from 20 papers are summarized in an appendix, and the bibliography contains 45 references.

In the green backfilling mining of underground coal mines, gangue in a coal seam is used to replace and fill goafs. However, the gas drainage time changes in the amount of gangue output and order in the extraction sequence of stope blocks, thereby changing the production output. A multi-objective integer programming model was proposed to solve this based on an improved non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm. The results show a feasible gangue filling rate can be found and the extraction sequence for a long-term planning time is optimized. It increases the planned annual output by 26% and reduces equipment idle time.

DEPRESSION in all lines of the mineral industry except gold, which began in 1930 and continued, even worse, through 1931, had its effect on ore concentration. Construction was limited to the completion of plants already begun. Every possible economy was adopted. Changes and improvements involving expense were postponed. Research was largely abandoned. Operations became highly efficient and costs were cut down, although this did not necessarily mean a lower cost per ton because of the greatly reduced capacity at which mills were run. Lower metal prices caused the operators to seek the optimum ratio of concentration and grade of concentrates looking toward maximum economic recovery; that is, net profit. In the crushing field no marked changes occurred. The Symons cone crusher for intermediate work is in use almost everywhere. Its manufacturers claim that 900 machines have been installed in 21 countries, replacing two previous steps of crushing and yielding a product sufficiently fine to form a satisfactory feed for rod mills and ball mills. A new Telsmith crusher has appeared which has curved jaws something like the Symons cone and consequently the same advantage as the latter.

The PLATSOL® process, initially developed for the treatment of the NorthMet Cu/Ni/PGM concentrate, has seen over the recent years its applicability extended to include numerous other Cu/Ni concentrates of the same type, as well as other precious metals-containing feedstocks. However, several concentrates were found refractory to the typical PLATSOL® conditions, more particularly so the platinum. Attempts to extend those conditions, such as higher temperatures (250°C), longer retention time, increased oxidation conditions, higher chloride additions, were not successful. Detailed mineralogical investigation of those PLATSOL® leach residues indicated the main refractory mineral to be cooperite (PtS). Further metallurgical investigations showed that a thermal pre-treatment of the concentrate effectively unlocked the refractory platinum minerals for the subsequent leach. Temperatures between 400 and 750°C were tested, with the optimum being found around 650°C. The kinetics of the pre-treatment process were fast, and one hour at temperature proved sufficient. Under those conditions, PLATSOL® extractions were re-established around 95% for both platinum and palladium. From a mineralogical examination of the calcine, it was shown that the effect of the pre-treatment was to transform the cooperite and other refractory sulphides into metallic platinum and alloys, amenable to the PLATSOL®. The implications of the pre¬treatment step for the processing of PGM concentrates arc briefly discussed.

The potential use of prereduced pellets in the burden of the blast furnace continues to be a topic of interest. Several excellent papers have been written describing the theoretical and experimental rewards. (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7) (8) (9) Significant increases in iron output and substantial savings in coke consumption are major advantages over conventional iron oxide pellets. The savings are especially important in areas where good coking coal is at a premium. Lower handling and transportation costs may also be factors favoring prereduction. When considering the overall cost of making and smelting prereduced materials the optimum metallization level becomes significant. An analysis by Agarwal and Pratt of the thermodynamic aspects of blast furnace operation with all prereduced pellets shows that the criteria controlling coke consumption depends upon the degree of reduction and upon the percentage of oxygen (present as FeO) removed by solution loss.(8) The authors state that although the chances of obtaining large fuel savings are greatly improved when metallization is high, reduction to the highest degree, which is costly, may not result in the lowest energy requirement per ton of hot metal; thus, over reduction could possibly result in wasted energy in the blast furnace.

My topic today is our Nation's interest in the minerals beneath the oceans. I will state what I think should be our objectives, the means available to attain these objectives, and the obstacles to their accomplishment. It is possible that as early as this year of 1969 our country must make policy decisions on this subject, and that these, once made, will be almost irreversible. Two factors are hastening an. early decision. First, the 1958 Convention on the Continental Shelf becomes eligible for amendment after June 10, 1969, if the Assembly of the United Nations so decides. Second, the United Nations has created a permanent committee of 42 nations, which was preceded by an ad hoc committee of 35 nations, to study the question of the peaceful uses of the seabed "beyond the limits of national jurisdiction. While these measures purport to deal with the creation of a regime to govern mineral development on the deep sea floor beyond the limits of the jurisdiction of the coastal nations, it has become clear that the urgent issue is the extent to which this future regime shall acquire jurisdiction over the mineral resources of the continental margin, and receive royalties therefrom. This brings the proposal into potential collision with the interests of the coastal nations under the 1958 Convention on the Continental Shelf, including, of course, the United States.

Despite modest improvements in the performance of domestic interest rates and gross national product,1 fixed investment in domestic producers' durable equipment continued to weaken during the second quarter of 1982 and declined at a 12.8 percent annual rate compared with the first quarter.2 Large declines occurred during the second quarter in expenditures on many of the major mineral-consuming industries such as aircraft, computers, agricultural and construction machinery and mining and oil field equipment. These data appear to be consistent with the low level of business investment plans for 1982 reported in the DOC's Bureau of Economic Analysis survey of expenditures on new plant and equipment.3 Domestic and foreign industrial production and mineral industry production activities continued to decline in the most recent period because of weak demand conditions (Tables 1 and 2). The U.S. mining production index declined 7.7 percent between April and June as compared with 1.2 percent for total U.S. industrial production (Table 1).

In January, 1922, a conference relative to trailing cables for use with permissible mining machines was held at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. At this conference it was recommended that the bureau take steps to investigate the rubber-sheathed type of cables and to bring about the establishment of a list of approved cables. Effective until such time as a complete investigation could be made, the bureau asked the several manufacturers holding approvals for mining machines to recommend cables for use with their machines. In general the cables recommended were tentatively approved. Due to the lack of available personnel, no actual tests of cables were made until mid-1927. Meanwhile a field investigation of trailing cables was made at 20 mines of three coal companies in western Pennsylvania, and samples of cables were obtained from the manufacturers for laboratory tests. Twenty-five samples of the concentric-type cable, representing the product of five manufacturers, were obtained for the tests. These cables were of four sizes, as follows: 3 cables of No. 2 B & S gage, 17 cables of No. 3 B & S gage, 3 cables of No. 4 B & S gage, and 2 cables of No. 6 B & S gage.

In the Bingham district over a span of more than 90 years, 43,947,104 tons of "non-porphyry" copper, lead, zinc, gold, and silver ore have been mined from a folded and faulted alternating series of Pennsylvanian and Permian limestones and sandstones and from some Tertiary intrusives. This ore came from six major mine areas located east, south, and west of the Bingham stock, site of Kennecott's porphyry copper deposit. The sediments were affected by varying degrees and types of metamorphism within 2000 feet or more of the Bingham stock. The intrusives consisting of the mineralized Bingham and the unmineralized Last Chance stocks and numerous dikes and sills of granite and monzonite were intruded into the asymmetrical northwest-trending and plunging Bingham syncline. Extrusives, although present, contain no ore. The bulk of the non-porphyry ore in the district was found above the Midas thrust. The primary ores are found in three major types of deposits: concordant bedding fissures, crosscutting fissures, and replacement deposits. These deposits consist of both copper and lead-zinc ore bodies that contain various amounts of gold and silver. These are in places roughly zoned both laterally and vertically and have been mined for up to 10,000 feet outward from the center of the Bingham stock and up to 5000 feet vertically below the surface. Secondary ore was of minor importance and was found in and under the oxidized zone at shallow depths. Genetically the Bingham stock, the ores, and related phenomena have had a common source.

Several water treatment options have been studied and piloted. A process based on activity of sulphate reducing bacteria combines sulphate removal and heavy metal removal in one process step. The anaerobic bacteria reduce the sulphate to sulphide and consequently metal sulphides will precipitate. The final design for the commercial scale plant is described.

The number of seismograph field crews employed in the active survey of potential oil territories is still on the increase, owing to the ever pending threat of a shortage in the supply of crude oil. It is to be expected that for years to come the seismograph will be responsible for discovering many new oil fields, both in wildcat territories and in deeper formations, and that the seismographic campaign will go on unabated. Yet improvements in instrumental design, in the field and interpretative techniques, are brought about year after year, and lead to the reshooting of areas many times surveyed previously. Notwithstanding the experience gained by the past eight years of active work in reflection seismographic surveys, the results given by this method of mapping deep formations have in many instances been at variance with the information subsequently obtained by the drill. To overcome this shortcoming, geophysicists have used closer spacing of the shot points and closer control of the depth points. The method discussed here is being used actively in the Mid-Continent region and endeavors to reduce the interpretation work to a mere mechanical technique, leaving as little as possible to the opinion of the interpreter. The New Method Field Technique.—In sectionized territory where country roads are available every mile, shot points are preferably located every 1/4 mile when six detectors are available or every % mile when eight detectors are at hand. The disposition of individual spreads is represented on Fig. I; in each case a shot point is located at the section corners. Fig. 2a represents the layout of a spread between shot points, the vibration detectors being preferably equidistantly located. Normally in the 1/4-mile control, the distance between shot points is 1320 ft. and the distance between detectors 220 ft. When shooting from shot point S.P. MR. McKEEVER: I think we had to start some- where. The proceeds of the beltbuckles and hard hat stickers will certainly be a beginning in a scholarship for some of our young people. And maybe, you know we might even get one of them sometime to go to the University of Oklahoma. A few years ago the luncheon speaker for tomorrow, Brooks Mitchell, got a few of the mine presidents together and we spent a full five hours of just dedicated listening to Carl Terzian. We listened basically on three subjects: how to work with the media, how to work with image, and how to identify with our political systems and those who are in them. I remember that as one of the turning points in my perspective on how our system really works. This gentleman who will be addressing you today, Mr. Terzian, will be conducting about a three-hour session tomorrow. And it's a shame that our other activities will not allow some of the golfers to probably be there. Those of you who can come to the session tomorrow morning will find it most rewarding. A little bit later on we will also have a panel session. And I see all of the panelists are here except for Bob Golten, but I understand that he is registered. We should have a full afternoon session with Charlie and his panel. When we started working on this, we naturally went back to Carl Terzian to give us some guidance. If there is anything wrong with your session, it's my fault because he knows how these should be done and he guided us along the way. One thing that I am sorry, it wasn't his fault necessarily, is that Harry Reasoner will not be with us for lunch tomorrow. Brooks Mitchell is going to make all of the PR he can out of the fact that Harry got scratched and he got in place for him. Brooks gave me one comment along that line. He said, "Do you know what you get when you cross a gorilla with a computer"? Of course I bit on that. He said. "Well, you get a Harry Reasoner." A little over a month ago I was invited out to California to Woodbury University at Carl Terzian's insistence. I happened to be sitting by one of his vice presidents. It was a formal affair. We had to wear tuxedos and everything and Mr.Green was sitting there and he said, "You know," he didn't know who I was at that time, but he said, "You know Carl really didn't want this formal affair. Said he had a couple of friends coming from the coal mining industry and they wouldn't know what to do with tuxedos." So with that Carl, we will start this little session and it's your mike. MR. TERZIAN: Thank you very much Ira. Let me begin by expressing my appreciation to the men and women of the Institute for allowing me to be here. I'm deeply concerned about my reputation, my image and don't want you to get the inference that I am responsible for Ira McKeever's image. Nobody could be responsible for that! But it is a great case in point that we all should be concerned about our images. I guess tomorrow morning from about 8:30. a.m. to about 11:30 a.m. we are going to do a? hopefully, a productive and very pleasant expertence for all of us in this growing field and great interest that people have in the area of image. I happen to be from Los Angeles. I have a national firm which has handled about 600 corporations', over the years through the areas of public relations,' community, civic involvement all built around a strengthening and safe guarding our precious, free enterprise system. The interactions between apatite and hematite were studied through zeta potential and stability experiments, for this paper. The zeta potential measurements were conducted in both background electrolyte and mineral supernatants. The difference in electrokinetic properties of minerals in the presence and absence of supernatant was explained in terms of the dissolution of minerals and the subsequent readsorption of dissolved species at the mineral-water interface. The stability measurements in individual and mixed mineral systems were also performed to identify the extent of interaction between apatite and hematite upon their direct contact. The results from stability measurements in individual and mixed mineral systems indicate that there is an interaction between apatite and hematite. In recent years, Chinese companies have invested billions in Australian mineral exploration, development and processing. In 2008 - 2009 alone, the Foreign Investment Review Board approved $26.4 B of investment. Much of this investment has been by merger and acquisition (M&A) of Australian resources companies. This paper sets out to investigate how Australian CEOs perceive the cultural and institutional challenges in operating Australia mining companies recently acquired by Chinese interests. HofstedeÆs cultural dimensions and institutional theory from management science were used to develop a structured questionnaire, which was subsequently used to conduct telephone interview of the CEOs of six recently acquired mining companies. Analysis of the survey results indicated that, in all cases, few changes were made to the operational management of the Australian companies post-M&A. The three major benefits for Australian companies as a result of the M&A are the ability to; access long-term debt at lower cost; secure finance for growth plans in financially volatile times; and maintain existing management structures. Some perceived negatives involved longer and more convoluted decision-making as a result of Chinese state approval required for investment decisions. The study identified building æGuanxiÆ and an aversion to losing æfaceÆ as important cultural learnings for Australian CEOs. "Conventional design criteria assume that the fracture strength of a structural material exceeds its yield strength. Fracture below the design load is not expected, y et many structures have failed in this way. The causes of the fractures are almost always discontinuities such as cracks and welding defects. Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM or simply 'fracture mechanics') provides an analytical framework for assessing the influence of sharp defects on the load-bearing capability of a structure. Fracture mechanics techniques have reached the point of acceptance by ASME Design Codes for nuclear components, and ASTM Standards now include well-defined rules for measuring fracture toughness. Starting with a simple equation which relates applied stress and crack size, the influence of the material's thickness and yield strength can be calculated. Thus, the size of defect which will cause failure under the applied stress may be determined. Armed with this information, the metallurgist can assess the safety of a structure from the viewpoints of non-destructive testing standards, construction standards and conditions of operation throughout its service life."
