With vehicles frequently found in underground mines and tyres being a major fuel item, the risk of tyre fires will be severe underground. This study presents an in-depth analysis of tyre fires on mining vehicles to increase the knowledge of the risk, applying data from full-scale fire experiments and CFD simulations. It was found that the wheelhouse of the loader caused an increase in the flame tilt angle of approximately 10%, decreasing the flame impingement and heat flux downstream. The flame temperature of the drilling rig tyre was found to be approximately 7% higher than the loader tyre, increasing the risk of igniting adjacent fuel items. The construction of the wheelhouse/mudguard will contribute to a longer flame length by creating a fuel-rich environment. The CFD simulations predicted higher flame tilt angles for the drilling rig case for higher flow velocities, indicating the influence of a varying wheelhouse/mudguard construction and tyre geometry on the flame tilt angle. The construction of the loader resulted in a flow behaviour, where the short distance to the front mudguard/tyre and the separation of flow directly downstream of the protruding construction led to fire gases being steered past the front mudguard/tyre. In the drilling rig case, the longer distance to the front mudguard/tyre led to fire gases being directed towards the body of the vehicle after passing the area with flow separation. An increased knowledge of the tyre fire risk on mining vehicles and mitigating measures would improve the fire safety in underground mines.

Mining faces many environmental, social and regulatory liabilities of which water management is just one. Others include site rehabilitation, carbon emissions, biodiversity offsets, strategic cropping land, subsidence, and noise and dust generation. Management of these liabilities is commonly seen as a cost of doing business and each is often independently addressed, bypassing the opportunity to reduce costs through integrated approaches. Furthermore, approaches to dealing with these liabilities tend to be constrained by a prevailing culture of engineered solutions and lack of appreciation of risk associated with alternative and hybrid alternative-engineered solutions. Suboptimal outcomes can also be reinforced by rigid regulatory constraints. While the cost of addressing operational liabilities may be a small proportion of overall mine management costs, failure to do so effectively may influence social licence to operate and, as recently demonstrated by the decision of the NSW Land and Environment Court to block expansion of the Warkworth Mine near Singleton, absolute licence to operate.Integration of environmental, social and regulatory liabilities with value-creating and risk-reduction opportunities such as beneficial water use, carbon bio-sequestration, habitat connectivity, keyline farming, improved grazing design and management systems, windbreaks and visual screens, presents opportunities to reduce risk and create value. This potential may achieve overall improved outcomes in both economic and non-economic mine performance criteria.Two case studies in beneficial use of waste water from the mining and coal seam gas (CSG) sectors (which operate under different legislation) will be used to illustrate the potential to address mine development, operational and closure liabilities by understanding opportunities to reduce risk and create value through a holistic water management framework. The technical requirements and alternative approaches to beneficial use of mine water are addressed, along with the direct economic benefits for mine operational costs and opportunities to positively engage communities and build resilience into social licence to operate. This paper summarises the lessons learned during a recent carbon reactivation kiln upgrade project at the Sukari Gold Mine in Egypt. The kiln is being replaced to ensure that the plant achieves full value from the current throughput expansion from 5 to 10 Mt/a.The suitability of the original engineering design criteria for kiln selection and the adequacy of the original kiln are reviewed in the light of the carbon chemistry, operating experience and a site inspection of the kiln. Particular aspects of the reactivation facility are discussed including: predrying, preheating, feeding, gas seals, kiln heat transfer, steam injection, counter-current sweep gas flow, carbon cooling, fines minimisation and removal.Design criteria for a carbon predryer, reactivation kiln and cooler combination for carbon heavily fouled by high molecular weight frothers and collectors are discussed and the abridged Ausenco datasheet for the combination is presented.Responses to a request for a budget price sent to most of the worldÆs suppliers of carbon regeneration kilns are summarised.CITATION:Claflin, J K, La Brooy, S R J and Preedy, D, 2013. Between February and August of 1986, Dr Alfred Petrick visited New Zealand sponsored under a Fulbright grant administered by the New Zealand-United States Educational Foundation. The grant supported a research project completed by Dr Petrick having as an objective, the preparation of a preliminary economic evaluation of the mining of six Otago lignite deposits as a source of energy for steam power generation or in liquid fuels. The research is limited to consideration of preliminary geological and engineering data on the six deposits and to the time constraints of the Fulbright visit. This paper is a summary of the final Fulbright report. The complete report including the listings of the computer programs is available from the Otago School of Mines.

It is almost exactly two hundred years since the foundations of the mining and metallurgical industries in Canada were laid. There '."'as nothing spectacular about this early start. It had to do with the most basic phases of these industries-the mining of coal and iron ore, and the manufacture of cast and wrought iron. At several points along the coast of Cape Breton island, coal seams may be seen outcropping quite conspicuously, and it is probable that they had been observed, and possibly worked in a small way, in very early times. However that may be, these coal seams have the distinction of being the first in North America of which there is any printed record, reference to them appearing in a volume by Nicolas Denys which was published in Paris in 1672. Regular coal mining in the district did not commence until about fifty years later, however. The metallurgists started their operations along the north shore of the St. Lawrence river. Here, at many points between Montreal and Quebec, are to be found deposits of bog iron ore, and in 1 730 a furnace for smelting such ore was established on the St. Maurice river. The St. Maurice forges continued in operation until 1880, and throughout that long period they were famed for the fine quality of castings produced, and also for a-superior wrought iron.

Reliable particle size analysis in minerals processing plants is a critical factor to the economic return of a plant. As recovery of valuable minerals is compromised for particles outside the optimal size range, effective and reliable particle size analysis is more crucial than ever, particularly in the current upswing of the global commodities market. Inefficient particle size analysis can lead to excessive over-grinding, thereby significantly increasing energy consumption and reagent costs, whilst negatively affecting process operation, thickening capacity, water recovery and tailings disposal.Australia’s first installation of a particle size analyser in Iron Ore has been monitored with great interest by the industry. Previously, manual size sampling at Rio Tinto’s Paraburdoo fines processing plant involved off-site sample analysis, with a turnaround measured in days. The Outotec PSI® 500 particle size indicator, commissioned in July 2009, takes approximately three minutes per line at site.The paper will include details on the following:• plant description,• sampling design,• PSI® 500 analyser functionality description, and• key learnings from site.

"The Broadmeadow mine is a punch longwall mine owned and operated by BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) in the Bowen Basin of Queensland, Australia. In 1999, an exploratory adit was driven as part of the feasibility study for the establishment of the mine. Subsequent development of the mine in 2004 started some distance away from the initial test adit. Ten years later, the trial adit would be used as the headgate of the 5'h longwall panel. However, multiple roof falls had occurred in a heavily jointed area over a distance of 1, 000 ft (300 m) during the past 10 years. Due to the immediate coal roof, low stress environment and time, some of these falls had progressed to 38 ft (11.5 m) above the mining floor. As a result of the extensive work involved and safety implications of trying to recover the roof falls conventionally, a strategy was developed to fill these roof falls with a cement based product from the surface, down boreholes, and redrive the roadways through the consolidated roof fall material. This paper describes the process of rehabilitating these roadways, the results when the roadway was redriven and the headgate performance as the longwall mined through the area.INTRODUCTIONBMA operates 7 open cut and 2 underground mines in the Bowen Basin of Queensland, Australia producing over 50 mt per year of high quality coking coal. As a result, BMA has established over 150 miles (250 km) of open cut highwall.Broadmeadow Mine is a punch longwall mine located 22 miles (35 km) north of Moranbah in Queensland, Australia on the western limb of the Bowen Basin Coal Measures (Figure 1). Broadmeadow Mine commenced development in 2004 and began longwall operations in 2005. Broadmeadow is currently completing the fifth longwall panel and produces over 4 Mt per year of high quality coking coal. Mining is undertaken in the Goonyella Middle Seam, which is 21 to 25 ft (6.5 to 7.5 m) thick in the current mining area.The mine layout required the use of an old exploratory gateroad as the headgate of its 5th longwall. This gateroad had experienced numerous large roof falls and required extensive rehabilitation."

This paper discusses design of sprays systems for dust control around a continuous miner (CM) in about 4.2 m (14 ft.) high mining areas with about 1.0 m to 2.0 m (3-6 ft.) of out-of-seam dilution mining. The challenges included low air volumes and velocity at the end of the line curtain, dust produced from out-of-seam dilution rock being very fine with 50% of the particles less than 10 micron, poor capture of aerosol through scrubber suction inlets, dust escaping through the sides of the loading pan in mining high areas, overloading of dust-laden air in the wet-scrubber, and dust rollback toward workers. The challenges were resolved through CFD modeling of airflows; improved line curtain installation, redesign and varying the spatial locations of spray systems as compared to low mining height areas. Water sprays on CM is the primary engineering control for dust control in coal mining. In 2010, the authors developed several spray system concepts for dust control (Chugh, Patwardhan, Gurley, & Hirschi (2009), Chugh & Gurley (2009), Chugh 2012). These included increased contact time between dust particles and water droplets, improved potential for the dust aerosol to be sucked in through suction inlets, and reduced dust-roll back to the operators and workers. CFD modeling was used to understand airflow patterns around mining areas and to identify spatial locations for sprays to minimize dust exposure of CM operator (CMO), haulage unit operator (HUO), and workers downwind of the operating CM in the last open crosscut (LOXC). Face area ventilation plays a key role in dilution and removal of dust generated by mining operations. High mining heights and large pillar sizes associated with longwall mining reduce the air volume reaching the face area to achieve good dust dilution.

The six presentations given at this joint staff seminar are published here for the benefit of those concerned with the problems of coal mine health, and especially those with responsibilities in administering the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969.

This investigation, which began 90 minutes after the February 3, 1995, seismic event, has benefitted from the assistance of a large number of individuals. The utilization of natural deposits of salt is one of the oldest industries in Alberta. In 1820, Sir James Richardson visited Salt river, and in the same year D. W. Harmon states chat "clown Slave river, there are several places, where almost any quantity of excellent dean white salt may be taken, with as much ease as sand along the seashore. From these places the greater part of the northwest is supplied with this valuable article". This reference is to the salt chat occurs around springs on Salt river at the northern boundary of the Province. This and other occurrences will be described later in this paper. It is not on account of the development of salt and gypsum in Alberta chat this paper has been prepared, but rather to draw attention to the widespread distribution of salt-bearing and gypsum-bearing rocks, and to the stratigraphic importance of these rocks . The origin of the deposits of salt, gypsum, anhydrite, and dolomite is discussed, and the economic significance of these minerals is considered. There is no salt production reported from Alberta in 1928.

The expansion of the West Point wastewater treatment plant located in Seattle, Washington, will require a permanent tieback retaining wall to enlarge the plant site for the new treatment plant facili­ties. The retaining wall will extend approximately 3,000 feet along the property boundary between the treatment plant and the neighboring Discovery Park. Wall heights will range from 35 to as high as 65 feet. The purpose of the retaining wall is to provide a more uniform grade on the plant site and to resist lateral pressures exerted by the upslope, unstable hillside. During preliminary design of the retaining wall, various wall systems were evaluated based on assumed subsurface soil conditions. Results of preliminary studies indicated that expected subsurface conditions and wall heights made a permanent tieback retaining wall feasible. However, uncertain loads on the wall and the capacity of anchors in the native soils were significant. As a result, a detailed geotechnical program was conducted. The scope of the program included conventional drilling, sampling, analyses, and a field test program to determine site-specific anchor capacities. This paper describes the anchor test program and results.

Asimismo, al utilizar al robot en la exploración y prospección de minerales, se logró reducir campañas de exploración de 4 años a 1.5 años, así como los costos, de $5M a $2M por campaña de exploración. Finalmente, el robot también se implementó en el ambiente de seguridad ocupacional, de manera que se logró mantener en cero los accidentes por derrumbes.

Since the adoption of the Surface Mining Reclamation and Control Act of 1977, which mandates that surface subsidence be an intergral part of the underground coal mine design, there has been a sudden rise of demand on guidelines for minimizing surface subsidence and its associated structural damages. Unfortunately there is no sufficient amount of systematic subsidence data to fill such a gap, although considerable research has been devoted to the subsidence-induced damages of surface structures in the past. However, it was said that many surface subsidence surveys have been performed and monitored by coal companies during the past twenty years, and that it will be a great source of information for subsidence engineering design if they can be collected and assembled together. An effort was therefore initiated in the Department of Mining Engineering, West Virginia University, under contract with the U. S. Bureau of Mines in December 1978 to contact each individual coal company in the Northern Appalachian Coal Field for any surface subsidence survey data. After 10 months' survey, the data collected include 17 longwall panels and 2 room and pillar sections. The data in-each panel and section cover the complete set of subsidence survey raw data, underground mine layout maps, surface topo maps, geological loggings showing the stratigraphic sequences and thickness of the overburden, and if available, locations and types of surface structures. On-site visits were followed to study the surface terraines and structures. Interviews were conducted with the owners of the surface structures in most cases about, if any, the history and characteristics of damages.

An abandoned mine shaft near Omar, in Logan County, W, was permanently sealed through a cooperative agreement between the West Virginia Department of Commerce, Labor, and Environmental Resources, Division of Environmental Protection, and the US. Bureau of Mines (USBM), Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) Program. An engineered shaft seal design was developed and demonstrated that featured lightweight concrete as a key material component at a wet density of about 45 lb/ft3. A reinforced concrete cap designed for 5 psi live load was placed over the shaft seal. Applicable new concrete technologies relating to a 100-yr design life were utilized to assure future integrity of the shaft seal. Waterproofing methods were included in the shaft seal design to provide protection from ambient moisture and corrosive mine waters and to increase the long-term durability of the shaft seal. All construction methods used in the field trial are fully adaptable for the mine-reclamation contractor, The USBM research objectives were to develop a broad generic design that will be widely applicable to other adit-sealing and shaft-sealing problems throughout the mining industry.

The most expensive unit operation in the beneficiation of ores is grinding. The correct design of the grinding circuit is crucial to prevent unnecessary use of energy. Proper design and evaluation of SAG grinding circuits require the specific grinding energy, which is determined experimentally. The most common tests in SAG grinding are the Drop Weight Test, from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Center (JKMRC) in Australia, and the SAG Power Index, from MinnovEX Technologies in Canada. The application of these tests to the same ore sample commonly produces different results. The work reported here aims at comparing the application of these two tests in the determination of the specific grinding energy for sulfide copper ores from Sequeirinho and Sossego deposits, Sossego Project, Companhia Vale do Rio Doce - CVRD, in Para state, Brazil.

INTRODUCTION As the population increased along the coast route (California Route 1), and the people’s need to have guaranteed access increased, the landslides and related road closures began to have serious adverse economic impacts. Landslides were causing major long-term road closures about every 10 years on average. In 1983, ground movement at Devil’s Slide caused Highway 1 to be closed for an extended period of time which caused significant economic loss to the surrounding coastal communities. A number of options for bypassing the slide area were considered, and the Martini Creek inland bypass was selected for design. Subsequent litigation led to the creation of the Devil’s Slide Tunnel Study in 1996. The results of this study indicated that a tunnel alternative would be competitive with the inland bypass. The final decision was left to the citizens of San Mateo County, who approved the tunnel alternative in the November, 1996 election After completion of environmental studies and the processing of legal challenges, the final environmental document was finished in 2001. The preferred tunnel alternative was designated to proceed for final design and construction. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Devil’s Slide Tunnels consists of a separated two-lane road, one lane in each direction, which passes through twin tunnels and over twin bridges and then connects with the existing non-separated, two-lane road at each end. The total length of the project is approximately 1900 meters consisting of four main project divisions, which are described below, going from south to north. 1.Operations and Maintenance Center (OMC) area, 2.Southern approach roadways to the South Portals (250 meters), including the South Rock Cut,
