Silver is a very important metal used in a wide range of applications. It is necessary to recovery of Ag from electronic wastes for increasing of Ag price and circumstance protection. For separating and recycling Ag from Ag-Cu composite materials, thermodynamic data of reaction is calculated and some experiments have been proceeded with Ag-Cu composite material scraps, time, temperature, nitric-sulfuric mixed acid volume ratio and the volume ration of mixed acid vs. water have been discussed. The results show that the optimization conditions is that nitric-sulfuric mixed acid volume ratio 5:95, volume ratio of mixed acid vs. water 10:1, temperature 55?, time 25min. In the conditions, Ag can be selectively leached from Cu-based composite material, Cu base is not eroded nearly.

"Xstrata Alloys – Eland Platinum concentrator (South Africa) has recently been commissioned and is now initiating a challenging optimisation program encompassing the entire operation. Process control improvements are key elements of the program and initial results have demonstrated how leveraging from current assets can bring significant improvements through overall reduction of variability. This paper gives a brief overview of the operations and details how Eland is striving to become a top tier leader with advanced regulatory control strategies recently implemented. Results reveal that what can be achieved in a standard control system (PLC or DCS) should not be underestimated as the first interventions led to a steadier operation of the primary ball mill circuit. Following the improvements, significant and sustained reductions of standard variation were observed for key process variables around their set-point: primary ball mill feed rate (72 %), rougher feed density (58 %), and rougher feed flow rate (47 %). A path forward has been identified to tackle further opportunities around the primary grinding circuit: water balance management, throughput optimisation as well as charge and power draw control.INTRODUCTIONThere are numerous approaches to mineral processing plant optimisation. As the benefits of determining the right reagent types, mix, dosage and addition points, or the proper charge of grinding media in a mill are fully appreciated, there is still nowadays some misunderstanding and misconceptions about process control in general and how it can contribute to the whole optimisation process. The confusion between the various disciplines involved, i.e. instrumentation, control system programming, automation and process control, certainly does not serve the best interest of the industry with this regard."

In 1900, as far as available records show, there were only two producer-gas power installations in the United States. In June, 1915, the number probably exceeded 1,000. Of this number, some 84.5 per cent comprised small plants using anthracite, and only about 15 per cent of the total number utilized bituminous coal and lignite. In addition to these, two plants used wood, and three or four used oil. In the main, however, the larger sized units are operating on bituminous coal and lignite. During the early years of these plants little success was anticipated from the use of bituminous coals and lignites, but in 1904 and 1905 it was fully demonstrated at the Government testing station at St. Louis that these fuels could be utilized to excellent advantage. However, although many producer-gas plants in daily operation are using bituminous coal and lignite, many power-plant men are still skeptical regarding the successful commercial use of these fuels.

Introduction Some people say it is almost impossible to get mining permits in California. Some say the day of the lone mining entrepreneur is past. And some say you cannot make money mining gold where old-timers have already mined it, especially in Tertiary gravels. But a young mining operator and SME member, Tim Callaway, is proving these ideas wrong. Callaway's company, Brush Creek Mining and Development Inc., has the necessary permits for its Gardner's Point gold mine in Sierra County, CA. And, Callaway has secured funds for the 7.7 km'/d (10,000 cypd) Tertiary gravel operation. The company's initial goal is to produce 373 to 466 kg/a (12,000 to 15,000 oz per year) of gold at Gardner's Point mine at a cost of less than $6.43/g ($200 per oz). Feasibility studies are currently being conducted to consider product levels up to the 1555 kg/a (50,000 oz per year) involving additional plants and infrastructure. While exploring for other hard-rock properties, the Brush Creek company already operates the Brush Creek lode gold mine. The mine sits high on a ridge south of Goodyear's Bar, which is located on the North Yuba river. It might be noted that the Brush Creek mine has been the subject of media stories recounting how a mine can operate with sensitivity to the environment. Gardner's Point project In 1983, Callaway negotiated with the Gardners Point Ltd. Partnership for control of the Gardner's Point property. The Partnership had been engaged for three years in securing permits, mapping and drilling, and test mining. The Partnership actually mined about 43.5 dam3 (57,000 cu yd) of gravel, which yielded 25.2 kg (810 oz) of free gold. Later, the Brush Creek company acquired ownership of the property. The company then began its own exploration and development program. As underground development proceeded at the Brush Creek mine, plans matured for a high-volume operation at Gardner's Point. Australian and English investors contacted Callaway. A joint venture was negotiated. The Australian owners became majority participants; the Brush Creek company, a minority participant and the operator. The Australian investors agreed to contribute $3.5 million (60%) to the Brush Creek Joint Ventures. The Brush Creek company will contribute its expertise as well as assets and liabilities valued at $2.3 million (40%). About $2 million has been allocated to the Gardner's Point project. Later, Brush Creek Mining and Development Inc. sold 50.4% of the company's common stock to English investors for $5.4 million. Callaway negotiated this private placement, which permits further exploration of projects being investigated. Geography and history The Gardner's Point mine is located in the northern Sierra Nevada of California, about 9.6 km (6 miles) east of the little town of La Porte in Plumas County. The mine lies high on a ridge above Slate Creek, which divides Plumas and Sierra Counties. La Porte is accessible from the Sacramento area by a winding, paved, two-lane highway. But the mine is reached only by two different unpaved county and Forest Service roads. Both roads include steep grades in and out of the Slate Creek canyon. A rapid, accurate method for predicting the dew points of gas condensate systems and their subsequent normal and retrograde phase behavior with pressure decline has been developed. The method predicts dewpoint pressure, volume percent liquid, condensate content of produced gas, and the liquid and gas compositions at pressures below the dewpoint pressure. Use of a modified form of the BWR equation of state, which was established by regression calculations on experimental data from several gas condensates, provides depletion behavior predictions that are significantly improved over predictions using K-values based on convergence pressures and Standing's correlation for density. INTRODUCTION Prediction of complex hydrocarbon-mixture thermodynamics is fundamental to reservoir and gas process engineering. In particular, accurate descriptions of phase behavior are needed to plan production operations for gas-condensate reservoirs. Although analysis of reservoir behavior during producing and cycling operations can be made for simple reservoir models, extensions of these studies to more complex reservoir systems are still difficult, both with regard to numerical techniques and the phase behavior of the fluids. This report presents a mathematical method for handling the complex phase relationships encountered in retrograde condensates; it represents an advance in reservoir behavior technology in that it will aid the development of closed-form mathematical representations of total production systems. A typical phase diagram for a complex hydrocarbon mixture is shown in Fig. 1. When the reservoir temperature T, is higher than the critical temperature Tc, and lower than the critical-condensation temperature Tct' the mixture is a gas condensate. Decreasing the pressure on a condensate while maintaining nearly constant temperature will result in two phases forming at the dew point. Further decrease in pressure will cause additional liquids to be formed. This phenomenon is called retrograde condensation. As pressure continues to decrease, normal phase behavior regions are encountered (liquid vaporizes as the pressure decreases) until the low-pressure dew point is encountered. When a gas-condensate reservoir is produced, gas is withdrawn and the volume of fluids in the reservoir remains nearly constant as the pressure declines. Heavier components tend to accumulate in the liquid phase as a result of retrograde condensation, while lighter components tend to concentrate in the vapor phase. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Office of Mine Safety and Health Research conducted an assessment of the effects that ground control mesh might have on rock and float coal dust distribution in a coal mine. The increased use of mesh to control roof and rib spall introduces additional elevated surfaces on which rock or coal dust can collect. It is possible to increase the potential for dust explosion propagation if any float coal dust is not adequately inerted. In addition, the mesh may interfere with the collection of representative dust samples when using the pan-and-brush sampling method developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration for band sampling. This study estimates the additional coal or rock dust that could accumulate on mesh and develops a means to collect representative dust samples from meshed entries.

As a means of investigating the distribution and variability of gold in ore from the Homestake mine, Lead, S. Dak., the Bureau of Mines performed a designed sampling experiment, and assay results were statistically interpreted. Fifty-six feet of diamond-drill core from five boreholes was sawed into l-inch-long cylinders, which were sampled randomly and were assayed. Analyses of variance of the assay results were used to compare and assess the different types of variation: within drill holes, among paired drill holes, among unpaired drill holes, and among furnace runs. The extreme variability in gold mineralization found is the natural variability on the smallest scale that can be detected by fire assay; most of the variability is associated with among-feet rather than within-feet sample intervals. Because of the extreme variability, one-half of the gold is in 3 percent of the samples.

Many coal beds that will be mined in southeastern Montana are aquifers that provide essential local water supplies. Mine cuts along aquifer outcrops create almost imperceptible piezometric changes. Monitoring near such operations at Colstrip has detected almost no water-level declines in observation wells. Mine cuts between outcrops induce rapid storage depletion and associated piezometric depressions. One such cut near Decker induced 1,250 m3/day of flow from storage and created a piezometric depression of 3 meters or more as far as 1,500 meters from the mine. No wells have yet become non-productive but losses of some are inevitable as operations expand. Alternative supplies are available from aquifers stratigraphically below the disturbed materials. Effluents from active mines are chemically similar to other area waters because they are mixtures or ground waters entering the mine cuts. Occasional high concentrations of nitrate do occur, however, as residuals from explosives. Spoils generally consist of confined aquifers of wasted coal and coarse rubble at their bases, overlain by finer-grained sand, silt, and clay. Hydraulic conductivities and storage coefficients are comparable with those of undisturbed confined aquifers. Water quality in mined lands is highly diverse because of diverse spoils lithologies and poorly-established ground-water circulation. Ground water in spoils is more mineralized than in the coal beds and chemically resembles waters from sandstone aquifers. Hydrologic effects of mining will not be catastrophic or widespread but may have local significance. Most notable changes will be in water quality; availability will not be permanently reduced.

A Fortran IV computer program entitled WAVE, which employs an explicit finite difference scheme for solving the one-dimensional wave equation for a time-dependent inelastic rock has been developed. The viscoelastic properties of the rock are represented in terms of a generalized Voigt model. The theory on which the computer program is based is rederived and a short description of the program is given. The computer program input instructions, a listing of the computer program, and example problems with required input and subsequent printed output are presented in appendixes. In the example problems) calculated results are free of spurious oscillations which occur in certain other methods of numerical calculation) notably the extended Ritz method.

Underground mining of stone in the US is increasing, as is the depth of overburden above the mines. Data gathered from mine visits, maps, discussion with operators and numerical simulation have been used to investigate pillar design and recommend safe practice. Many pillars have slender shapes with relatively large adjacent mine openings: width-to-height ratios range from 0.54 to 3.13 and extraction ratios from 0.56 to 0.91. The pillar material is often very strong and average overburden only 80 m, but occasional failure due to excessive local stress has occurred where pillar size had been unintentionally reduced, overburdens were greater than 200 m, width-to-height ratios were less than 1.25 or extraction ratios were greater than 0.83. Pillars with width-to-height ratios of less than 1.5 appear more likely to fail under excessive stress. When width-to-height ratios fall below 1.0, defects such as through-running discontinuities can have a significant influence on stability. Dip, orientation and material properties are also important

The paper gives a summary of the role and objectives of the CME, including its history, structure and key program areas. Particular attention is given to the role of the CME in the Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia. The paper details the types of CME membership that are currently in existence. The paper argues that a strong and vibrant CME is vital to secure the resources sectorÆs growth and development in future years.

This paper is one of a series on mining methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. It describes briefly mining practices at the Sunrise iron mine of the Colorado Fuel & Iron Corp., Platte County, Wyo. The Sunrise mine is in the Hartville iron district in east-central Wyoming (fig. 1). The district covers part of the Hartville Mountains, a region of moderate relief in which erosional features have been formed by the dissection of a low plateau. Altitudes vary from 4,300 feet along the North Platte River to 6,000 feet in the uplift. The climate is semiarid, with hot summers and winter temperatures below zero for short periods. Grasses, cacti, yucca, and low desert shrubs grow at lower elevations. Cottonwood and boxelder trees and willows grow along permanent streams; juniper and coniferous trees are confined to the higher elevations.

The floodable volume of longwall gob can be of great importance in developing accurate coal mine operation plans, particularly for mine water management and environmental control strategies. Given the inaccessibility and difficulty in direct measurement of gob characteristics following gob recompression, hydrologic, geomechanical, and spatial data and principles were used to solve for the porosity and height of the residual gob using a mathematical model framework and bulking-based techniques. Based on this approach, gob porosity of Appalachian longwalls appears to be tighter than previously reported, ranging between 4.99 and 14.31%. Residual gob height, as normalized with respect to mine extraction height, ranges between 1.90 and 2.45. A novel, bedding-based bulking approach is ampliative with respect to existing roof caving and bulking fundamentals, as it has greater explanatory value compared with the traditional, lithologic-based bulking application. The efficacy of using the residual gob characteristics determined by the mathematical model and bedding-based bulking is examined using a causal comparative method, whereby time series prediction of historical groundwater rebound is compared with observed mine pool elevation data. Prediction accuracy is significantly improved using a prototype model to calculate void volume of longwall gob, specifically, the dependence of porosity of the gob material upon the longwall width to overburden depth ratio for movement basins of subcritical and critical panel widths. The potential implication of these findings toward hydrologic, geomechanical, and ventilation studies of longwall gob could be significant.

La presente investigación señala la relación entre el factor tiempo-concentración y la silicosis, a partir de los resultados obtenidos por la sección Ingeniería en su estudio de ambiente de trabajo con los hallazgos del examen realizado a los obreros en un yacimiento minera del sur peruano. Para dicha correlación, se consideró únicamente el subsuelo y el personal que lo labora, excluyendo todo lo relacionado con la superficie, a fin de no diluir la tasa de prevalencia de silicosis y por la diferencia que existe en el medio ambiente del trabajo de cada trabajador. La minera se encuentra a 4600 m.s.n.m y está compuesta por rocas volcánicas terciarias y metamórficas, donde la ventilación es de tipo natural, la extracción del mineral se efectúa por el nivel inferior mediante una locomotora y el personal minero carece de implementos de protección personal. De acuerdo a la exposición de polvo, concentración, contenido de sílice libre y datos de la minera, se concluyó que la tasa de prevalencia de la silicosis fue de 11% y estuvo asociada directamente a la exposición de polvo por ocupaciones y tiempo de trabajo.Por tanto, es necesario crear un programa de prevención de silicosis, donde se instale un sistema de tuberías de agua para la perforación en húmedo, se reduzca la jornada laboral a ocho horas, se emplee atomizadores de agua después de los disparos, efectuando las operaciones de cargo mineral en estado húmedo y por último, se realice un examen periódico a los trabajadores.

Longwall management, regular shield maintenance, and evaluation of ground control problems can be performed using real-time shield monitoring program. Based on real-time shield pressure data, evaluation of intensity and interval of periodic weighting, estimation of time-dependent pressure increase and the effects of geologic anomalies can be obtained. In this study, full-face shield pressure data of over 457 m (1,500 feet) of face advancement is analyzed to evaluate shield response in the presence of surface lineaments, floor undulations, and multiple main roofs. Shield pressure increase due to web cutting is also correlated with setting pressure during periodic weighting and normal time. In addition, time-dependent pressure increase rate on Sundays and holidays is also correlated with time average pressure and the location of previous periodic weighting.

This report contains Bureau of Mines routine analyses of 492 samples of crude petroleum from 470 United States oilfields, each of which produced 2,500 barrels a day or more during at least 1 of the years 1946-56. The fields are listed alphabetically by State and field names in table 1, with information on the geographical and geological sources of the samples. Table 2 summarizes the general characteristics of the crude oils and analytical and computed data determined from the analyses. A previous report 4 contains similar analyses of 283 important United States oilfields; some of them are repeated in this report. Many fields for which analyses previously were published are represented by new analyses, which include data not previously reported. Refractive index nu and specific dispersion, ng minus nD divided by the density, for some of the distillate fractions are included in the analyses of 316 of the crude-oil samples. This is the first Bureau of Mines report on analysis of crude oils to contain such data, and their use in calculating hydrocarbon-type composition of the fractions is explained.

It has long been understood that extended occupational exposures to respirable mine dusts can lead to chronic lung disease. In underground coal mines, coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) and silicosis are major concerns. While there have been many studies aimed at understanding total dust concentrations and silica content associated with different mining conditions (e.g., locations/occupations within a mine, cutting methods, geologic strata), little research has been completed to more comprehensively characterize respirable dust (i.e., by distributions of particle composition, size or shape). For such analysis, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) may represent a powerful tool. This article is a preliminary investigation of SEM-EDX to characterize respirable dust from an underground coal mine in Central Appalachia. Samples were collected from various locations in the study mine, and individual dust particles were identified and classified by mineral type. A continuous personal dust monitor was also used to estimate respirable dust concentrations during sampling. This data was compared to particle densities observed under the SEM. Dust is generally defined as small, solid particles with an effective diameter between 1 and 100 µm. In underground coal mines, dust is produced by a variety of activities such as coal and rock cutting, materials handling, haulage and from a variety of materials. While the coal itself is primarily made up of organic carbon, it is estimated that as much as 60 percent of coal mine dust consists of mineral matter, including clays, metal oxides and sulfides, carbonates, quartz, phosphates and heavy minerals (WHO, 1997). Mineral matter may be ingrained in the coal seam or associated with adjacent or interlying strata, and may also be contributed by specific activities such as rock dusting. When dust is generated or made airborne, suspended particles tend to settle slowly with gravitational forces, but can remain airborne for extended periods of time depending on environmental conditions such as air velocity (Courtney et al., 1986) and particle properties such as size (ISO, 1995; WHO, 1999). Thus, miners working underground are routinely subject to occupational dust exposures ? with highly variable characteristics between and even within mines.
