"Cut-and-fill mining is a stoping method that has been widely utilized in the mining industry over the past forty years. It took preference over shrinkage methods at Levack in the early 1930sbecause of its safety aspects; i.e., prompt support of the stope sidewalls, good working floors and better accessibility to support poor back areas. In addition, higher recoveries of ore were possible because of the flexibility of the method in that silling could take place easily at any horizon; low-grade ore could be sorted and left in the stope as fill and certain zones of rock could be left unmined. With modern techniques, a steady production rate can be established, as filling and mining can be carried out stimultaneously.AIthough there are numerous variations of cut-and-fill mining throughout the world, this paper reviews the original type of mining, with modifications and improvements through the years to present modern practices, with the Levack West operation appearing to be the most productive at this time. Stoping efficiencies have also increased substantially from the original 10 tons per manshift to the present 55 tons per manshift.The paper also outlines the many improvements that have been made with respect to mucking and ground support operations; from hand mucking in a single stope to the use of frontend loaders and haulage trucks in fully accessible stope complexes; and from timber props to roof bolts of various types. Although present methods are extremely satisfactory, experimentation is continually being conducted to improve safety and productivity for future mining.IntroductionThe major mining operations of the Ontario Division of Inco Limited are located in the Sudbury Basin (Fig. 1). Around the rim of this geological formation and within 30 miles of the City of Sudbury are nine producing mines and one ' open pit operated by the company .Ore production currently approximates 11.5 million tons per annum from underground and open-pit operations. Underground mining methods include sub-level caving, shrinkage, cut and fill, undercut and fill, blasthole and vertical retreat. The Levack Complex, the main plant of which is the central Levack Mine, produces 11,000 tons per day.The first prospecting in the Levack area, in 1887, was conducted by James Stobie, who examined rock cuts along the route of the Canadian Pacific Railway to the northwest of Sudbury. However, it wasn't until 1913 that operations commenced at Levack under the Mond Nickel Company."

The Phu Kham Copper-Gold Operation (Phu Kham) is located in northern Laos, approximately 140 kilometres from the capital, Vientiane. The operation is a producing asset for Australian-based copper and gold producer, PanAust Limited (PanAust) and is operated by Lao-registered company, Phu Bia Mining Limited (Phu Bia Mining). PanAust holds a 90 % interest in Phu Bia Mining. The Government of Laos owns the remaining 10 %.The Phu Kham Operation has recently undergone a series of process improvements to treat the anticipated competent ores scheduled for 2017 and 2018. The operation’s comminution circuit, which comprises a semi-autogenous (SAG) mill and two ball mills, each with 13 megawatts (MW) of installed power, was expected to be SAG mill limited when treating competent basement rock. Ausenco Services Pty Ltd (Ausenco), was engaged to help optimise and enhance the productivity of the Phu Kham comminution circuit over an eight-month period. The work involved participating in and overseeing the redesign of the SAG mill liner systems and developing operational strategies for maximising throughput through to the end of mine life. Ausenco’s comminution optimisation tool, Ausgrind, was used to benchmark and analyse plant data with empirical models, predict circuit performance for varying ore characteristics and evaluate liner wear and predict the life for varying operating parameters. Variances between the actual and the predicted values were assessed in detail to identify missed opportunities, and guiding operating parameters were redefined to maximise throughput and productivity. In combination with the redesigned liner system, optimised process controls for varying ore competencies, and improved operational practices and troubleshooting strategies, increased Phu Kham overall production, exceeding the milling capacity when treating competent ores. The Newcrest Mining Limited Cadia East Panel Cave mines near Orange, New South Wales, Australia commenced production 1200 m below the surface in May 2014. Understanding the mine-wide impact caving had on excavation stability was a primary objective to ensure a safe working environment as production ramped up in the Panel Cave 1 operation and establishment activities were implemented in Panel Cave 2. The impact of cave interaction between Panel Cave 1 and Panel Cave 2 and establishing monitoring systems to assist mine planning and production as both caves joined is explained in this paper. Monitoring tools such as a microseismic system, open holes, HI-cells, extensometers, fibre optic sensing, cave markers, closure monitoring, underground observations and damage mapping were used to characterise the performance and position of the cave back. The data and observations collected were compared to predictions from numerical and empirical methods and used to calibrate the numerical models for forward prediction and to develop site empirical design tools. "This paper examines the impact of the various assumptions that go into an economic evaluation, and shows how these can be combined to show an exciting result that may not really exist. An example of an embellished case (the kind that one frequently sees when projects are being promoted) is developed and the cumulative impact is analyzed to show the actual project underneath. The paper also points out some areas to watch for overly optimistic assumptions such as prices, inflation, and debt. The concept of a “bare bones” base case is proposed (constant metal prices, constant dollars, no inflation, no debt, no interest, on a project basis, after tax) as a common reference point.As well, the discount rate is examined as one of the fundamental means of reflecting risk in discounted cash flow evaluations. Current industry practice is discussed, and a methodology for the analysis of risk levels is proposed that assesses the constituent components of the discount rate: real interest, mineral project risks, and country risk."

Neste trabalho foi estudado o efeito da variação da densidade de corrente, temperatura e pH do banho eletrolítico na eletrodeposição da liga Ni-Mo-P utilizando citrato de sódio como agente complexante em função do comportamento anticorrosivo da mesma, da composição química e morfologia dos revestimentos. A caracterização das camadas foi feita por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e energia dispersiva de raios-X (EDX). Os ensaios de corrosão foram realizados à temperatura ambiente em NaCl 0,1 M por polarização potenciodiâmica linear (PPL). Como ferramenta de otimização foi utilizado um planejamento fatorial completo 23 associado a metodologia da superfície de resposta (MSR). As propriedades de corrosão e composição química dos revestimentos de Ni-Mo-P obtidos mostraram ser dependentes da densidade de corrente, temperatura e pH do banho eletrolítico. A ausência de trincas foi verificada para revesimentos com baixo conteúdo de molibdênio e mostrou ser necessário para obtenção de eletrodepósitos com boas propriedades de resistência à corrosão. Os resultados revelaram que o revestimento que apresentou melhor resistência à corrosão foi obtido em densidade de corrente 100 mA cm-2, temperatura de 40°C e pH 9,0 com composição de 87 wt.% Ni, 6 wt.% Mo e 7 wt.% P e sua superfice exibiu morfologia nodular.

In 1900, as far as available records show, there were only two producer-gas power installations in the United States. In June, 1915, the number probably exceeded 1,000. Of this number, some 84.5 per cent comprised small plants using anthracite, and only about 15 per cent of the total number utilized bituminous coal and lignite. In addition to these, two plants used wood, and three or four used oil. In the main, however, the larger sized units are operating on bituminous coal and lignite.

"The ore-element patterns in regional lake sediment geochemical survey data from four areas of Newfoundland containing granite-related mineralization reveal characteristics which can be used to identify mineralized granitoids. The St. Lawrence Granite with its fluorite deposits, the Ackley Granite with molybdenite mineralization, the Grey River tungsten lodes and the newly discovered Mo- W mineralization at Granite Lake, Central Newfoundland, have all been included in the regional lake sediment geochemical surveys, which now cover about 90,000 km2 of the Island of Newfoundland. The lake sediments over these mineralized granites show diagnostically high values of Mo, F, Pb, Zn and, in three of the four cases, U, together with locally high Ag and Cu values. Furthermore, these ore-metals display a distinctive zoning pattern about the intrusives, which can be related to the classical ore-metal zoning patterns developed about many types of mineralized granitoids.IntroductionGranitoids in Eastern Canada are receiving renewed interest as potential hosts of tin, tungsten, uranium and related mineralization. Although a number of mineral deposits and showings have been known from a few granites (sensu lato) in the region for many years, granites had generally received little attention as potential hosts of metallic mineralization until the recent resurgence in interest in the mineral potential of these rocks. In Newfoundland, where granitoid rocks underlie about 30070 of the land area, petrologic data are available from some granites, particularly those in eastern Newfoundland (Strong et al., 1974; Strong, 1980), but in southern and southwestern Newfoundland the data base is sparse, and indeed in many cases individual plutons are not delineated on the geological maps of the area . Most of the available data on Newfoundland graniotolds have been summarized by Strong (1980), who gives a general assessment of their mineral potential by comparing their physical, mineralogical and petrochemical attributes with mineralized granites elsewhere in the world."

O avanço tecnológico tem gerado demanda crescente por materiais que possam ser utilizados em alta temperatura e ambientes oxidantes, o que inclui ligas intermetálicas MR–Si–B (MR = metal refratário) com estruturas multifásicas. Assim, este trabalho teve por objetivo estudar a microdureza de ligas do sistema Hf–Si–B na seção isotérmica a 1600ºC, na região rica em Hf. Ligas Hf–Si–B foram fundidas com lâminas de Hf (min. 99,8%), Si (min. 99,998%) e B (min. 99,5%), em forno a arco e tratadas termicamente a 1600 ºC em atmosfera de argônio. As relações de fases nessas ligas foram identificadas por difração de raios-X e por contraste, em imagens obtidas via microscopia eletrônica de varredura no modo elétrons retroespalhados. As ligas tiveram sua dureza medida pelo método Vickers (microdureza) com cargas de 0,05 kgf e 0,2 kgf e tempo de aplicação de 20 s. Os resultados, obtidos da média aritmética das medições realizadas nas regiões heterogêneas de cada liga, mostraram uma dureza média de 11,08 GPa, com pequeno coeficiente de variação de 3,8%. Os boretos HfB2 (19,34 GPa) e HfB (11,76 GPa) apresentaram dureza mais elevada que os silicetos Hf2Si (8,57 GPa), Hf5Si3 (9,63 GPa), Hf3Si2 (11,66 GPa), Hf5Si4 (10,00 GPa), HfSi (10,02 GPa) e HfSi2 (8,61 GPa).

Durban Harbour in South Africa is one of the continent’s busiest ports however the harbor entrance is currently too small for the new generation of container ships. There-fore it is to be deepened and widened by the National Ports Authority in the near future. An existing immersed tube tunnel carrying major sewer, water and other utilities under the harbor first needs to be removed and replaced by a deeper 4.4 m ID ser-vices tunnel. Construction of the deeper tunnel saw the first use of a slurry machine in South Africa and was required to negotiate grades up to 20%.

Since great emphasis is being placed on the manufacturing science and processing science programs in the Department of Defence and other government research agencies and industries; currently, extensive research on computer aided design(CAD)/ computer aided manufacturing (CAM)/ and computer aided engineering (CAE) is being conducted at Ohio University (OU) . OU has invested over a million dollars in CAD/CAM hardware and software. Design and analysis packages like ALPID, NIKE, STREAM, SHEAR, POLY_FLON, RINGROLL have been developed or modified at OUusing finite element method, finite difference techniques or enhanced slab analysis. Packages like ABAQUS, FLUENT, and NASTRAN have been extensively used.

These inspection standards have been prepared for use in the Federal inspection of bituminous and lignite mines. They are a revision of "Tentative Coal-Mine Inspection Standards," published as Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7204 in February 1942 and employed a guide for Federal inspections. Numerous changes have been made in the original standards owing in part to recognition of shortages of some types of safety equipment due to the war, in part because of need of additional standards to cover certain mine conditions' arid' practices, and in part to conditions not foreseen when the original standards were prepared. About one-fourth of these standards are marked with an asterisk (*) as being of particular importance in preventing accidents in many coal mines; however; failure to carry out the suggestions made in such of the other standards as are applicable may also' lead' to the loss of lives.

A yield point effect attributed to short-range ordevi?g (SRO) occurs in Cu base Al. At at 296°K varies with heat treatment, decreasing as the annealing ternperature is raised .from 433Oto 598°K. Davies aid Cahn' observed a corresponding decrease in SRO. (523 °K anneal, measured at 77°K) is approximateZy proportional to the variations of A7 with strain rate and testing temperature are also Consistent with the idea that is associated with SRO. A preliminary investigation of the tensile properties of a Cu-Al single crystals showed the presence of a rather strong yield-point effect (drop in flow stress after initial yielding). The object of this research was to investigate its origin and behavior. a Cu-Al alloys are particularly interesting because diffuse X-ray scattering measurements by Davies and Cahn,' Houska and Averbach,' and Borie established the presence of short-range order. The degree of local order may be changed with heat treatment.' cottrel14 suggested that the presence of local order might result in a yield-point effect, and thus the possibility exists here for experimentally ascertaining the importance of short-range order with respect to yield points in these alloys. Since a 12 pct difference exists between the atomic sizes, elastic or Cottrell locking5 must also be considered. Further, Howie and swanne have shown that the stacking fault energy of copper is reduced by aluminum additions. The width of extended dislocations should thereby increase. hus the conditions appear attractive for Suzuki locking.' Finally, the possibility of stress-induced order at dislocations, schoeck locking,' must also be examined, EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys up to 14 at. pct Al were prepared by induction melting high-purity (99.999 pct) Cu and (99.996 pct) Al in a graphite boat under a dynamic vacuum of 5 X 10o mm of Hg. After homogenizing the ingots at 900°C for at least 24 hr under vacuum, they were rolled with intermediate anneals to strips 1.55 mm thick. Single crystals 10 in. long were grown by lowering strips, contained in a split graphite mold sealed in fused quartz at 5 X lo-' mm of Hg, through a single coil induction heater at a constant rate of 1/2 in. per hr. Tensile specimens 1.25 in. long were cut from the single crystal strips and reduced cross sections about 0.7 in. long and 3.0 to 3.5 mm2 in area were introduced by filing and abrading.8 To remove the worked portion about 10 pct of the cross-sectional area was removed by etching. Back-reflection Laue photographs of a filed and etched specimen were taken before and after annealing at 900°c for 24 hr. Small, well defined Laue spots were obtained with no visual difference in the two photographs. Further, specimens with and without the reduced sections began yielding at about the same stress. Hence, for our purposes, filing and abrading did not affect the structure of the specimens. Each single crystal specimen was annealed at 900° c in vacuum for at least 24 hr and furnace cooled; while cooling through the range of 250o to 200°c, the rate was about 55°C per hr. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has collected pillar and span data at 34 stone mines in 10 states to develop pillar and roof span design guidelines for underground stone mines. Pillar, floor and roof conditions each contribute significantly to the overall mine stability. The roof may be stable for a century, or it may appear to be stable but fail with little warning. Clearly, an assessment of the mine roof is critical to the safety of these operations. However, up until now, the assessment of the mine roof came primarily from exposures in roof falls or portal areas. This provides only limited information, and a more proactive approach is needed to assess changing mine conditions. A separate effort was undertaken to examine the roof structure with the use of a borescope. Numerous physical and geologic roof structures were observed with a stratascope/borehole video camera. The objective of this work was to develop a technique of assigning numerical values to features seen within the mine roof and apply those values to formulate a roof stability evaluation. Such features as changes in color, grain size, and general lithologies are readily observed. Minor structures in the rock, fossils and fractures are also readily identified. Each feature may have a variable and site-specific impact on roof quality. A number of mines were visited and a series of holes were borescoped in each mine. The features identified in the roof were classified and potential for roof damage related to each feature was assessed. A process is presented that relates the structures and their locations to provide a numerical value, or roof quality index that can be used to assess roof stability.

Ultraviolet-visible and infrared emission spectra from propagating methane-coal-dust-inhibitor mixtures have been obtained in a 0.2-by 0.2¬by 5.3-m vertical duct over a range of flame speeds from 2 to 100 m/sec. Results serve as a basis for the design and evaluation of thermal radiation detectors for triggered barriers that suppress ongoing mine explosions. Of particular significance is the large continua superimposed on the methane-air spectra when small amounts of coal dust are present and the variation of emissivity with infrared (IR) wavelength in dust flames. In conjunction with the spectral measurements, studies of flame speed, particle size, gas sampling plus thermodynamics, and dust sampling are presented and discussed in order to gain insight into the more fundamental aspects of propagating explosions. Sampling results have shown that only a near-stoichiometric amount of dust is consumed in the flames studied even though initial concentrations are five times stoichiometric. Difficulty in propagating coal-dust inhibitor flames of realistic mine characteristics in a cold-walled laboratory duct has been encountered. A simplified analysis of the flame zone utilizing spectral and sampling results indicates that the stability of slowly propagating flames is more dependent upon thermal radiation than upon convection losses to the walls. It is predicted that thermal radiation losses will make any measurements of coal dust burning velocities, "quenching diameters," or flammability limits more apparatus dependent than those corresponding to gaseous fuels.

"We have been very ably represented by Mr. John H. Emrick as General Chairman, assisted by our good friend Mr. Fred W. Whiteside, our secretary and treasurer. I know they have worked very hard in selecting the various committees, who in turn - by the looks of our program have gone all out to prepare material that should be of great interest to us. I trust we will be attentive to the subjects presented and freely enter into the discussions, also relating our problems and experiences. I am sure this will prove both profitable and beneficial to all present. "The main purpose of these conventions is to become acquainted with each other, renew old acquaintances, talk over our problems, and have a little fun and relaxation from our every day routine. "Let us not forget the manufacturers, the distributors, the operators, or the press because it is through their splendid support that this organization is successful. "Since our last meeting we have gained many new members, whom we especially welcome. We are sorry to have lost a few. I am mindful, at this time, of two very good members from my home state who have passed away, Walter Wetzel, a former president of this institute, and Lee Alger, at the time of his death, Vice-President from Utah. We also lost very recently our assistant Secretary-Treasurer, Everret Davis. These men contributed a great deal to the institute and the coal industry in general. I am sure they are greatly missed by all who knew them."

"What is Due Diligence?Within the mining industry the term “due diligence” is used to describe a detailed data review, generally in connection with the purchase or sale of a mineral property, the approval of a large capital expenditure, or the borrowing of a large sum of money.The term originates in the requirement of the board of directors of a corporation to “act honestly and in good faith ... and exercise the care, diligence, and skill that a reasonably prudent person would exercise in comparable circumstances” (OBCA, 1994). Furthermore, the law assumes that a corporation (or its board) will have exercised due diligence in the acquisition of an asset and, therefore, knowingly (in the absence of fraud or deceit) will have taken on the liabilities and obligations associated with the asset (Nelson, 1994). This is the familiar “Buyer Beware”.Directors are liable for their decisions except “if the director relies in good faith upon financial statements of the corporation represented … by an officer of the corporation or in a written report of the auditor, or a report of a lawyer, accountant, engineer, appraiser, or other person whose profession lends credibility to a statement made by any such person.” (OBCA, 1994).Hence the importance of reports prepared by professionals. They provide confirmation that the directors have exercised due diligence in the performance of their duties. For this reason these reports are referred to as due diligence studies"

On the basis of preliminary data, production was 1 Mt (1.1 million st) with an estimated value of $47 million. Production increased by 3 percent in tonnage from 973 kt (1.1 million st) with a value of $45.1 million in 2012. Tennessee was the leading producer state accounting for 64 percent of domestic production, followed by Texas, Mississippi and Kentucky. Other markets accounted for less than 1 percent of the remaining ball clay sales or use. Sales reported for the manufacture of fiberglass or most filler, extender, and binder applications were likely to have been mainly kaolin mined or purchased by the ball clay producers.PricesThe average value of domestically produced ball clay was approximately $47/t ($43/st) in 2013 compared with $46/t ($42/st) in 2012, on the basis of a preliminary survey of domestic ball clay producers. The unit values of exported and imported ball clay were $126/t ($114/ st) and $373/t ($338/st), respectively, in 2013, compared with $62/t ($56/st) and $314/t ($285/st), respectively, in 2012. Unit values for most large export shipments increased in 2013, and a larger number of low-tonnage, high-value export shipments were shipped in 2013 than in 2012, resulting in a doubling of the average export value. Two low-tonnage, high-value shipments in 2013 accounted for the increased value of imports."
