Magnetite (Fe3O4) ore is concentrated by low-magnetic-field drums to recover a magnetite concentrate that is low in silica (SiO2). The presence of SiO2 in the magnetite concentrate for steel production increases the steel processing costs, so a major challenge in magnetic concentration is to lower the SiO2 grade in the Fe concentrate. This work presents studies that were carried out on the removal of SiO2 from the magnetite concentration at the plant scale. Studies were performed with a three 36 × 96″ drum unit processing 46 ton/h of rougher magnetite concentrate. These studies showed that silica appears in the magnetite concentrate by three mechanisms, namely SiO2 entrainment in Fe3O4 chains, heterocoagulation between Fe3O4 and SiO2 particles, and mineral locking of SiO2 to Fe3O4. The SiO2 entrainment mechanism had the highest contribution (75%) to the SiO2 recovered in the Fe concentrate. Electrokinetic studies on Fe3O4 and SiO2 showed that heterocoagulation occurs because of the low negative zeta potential of the minerals at the pH of the plant slurry. This study also showed that a high percentage of ultrafine size SiO2 particles trapped in Fe3O4 agglomerates was not removed by the dilution water for the slurry fed to the drum. To lower the SiO2 recovery in the drum magnetic concentration process, work should be directed towards the removal of trapped SiO2 in Fe3O4 agglomerates.

IN the underground department of a mine, we may fairly say that "good management is based upon three elementals: first, sound engineering; second, proper coordination and efficiency of every human unit; third, economy in the purchase and consumption: of supplies.This paper is practically an analysis of the second element; which stands out prominently as the most important in the winning of successful results. The human units are divided into officers and men. The officers intermesh. One man takes responsibility where another throws it down; incessantly new conditions are arising where they may be doubtful of their powers; and always, on account of the three shifts, varying methods of work are coming into conflict. This very often results in disorganization. What is most necessary to guard against this is an esprit de corps, which would influence officers to stifle personal feelings for the general welfare of the department, To secure co-operation and loyalty of the staff, the writer recommends for the mines of the field a system of profit-sharing. Distributed on a salary basis, together with liberal holidays (not less than three weeks in each year) on full pay...

Taking the Presidential chair of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, my first duty is to thank you for the high honour and position you have conferred on me. A position entailing the highest compliment the Institute could bestow on any of its members, and one which I feel my inability to properly fulfil, inasmuch, as you have men in your ranks of the highest scientific training residing on that great continent where the head quarters of the Institute is established, while my engagements here will not permit me leaving this colony but for a very limited period.About six years ago, during the time the mining boom was at its height, there came to this colony from England, Germany, and South Africa, several mining engineers, who in conjunction with the mining engineers here, formed an Institute which we soon found we were not able to maintain. The mining boom gradually died away, and many engineers have left the colony to find employment in other parts of the world. We made overtures to your Iqstitute to take us under your wing, which you were kind enough to do, and the outcome is that you have come over 1200 miles to hold a meeting in New Zealand. The paucity of members residing in this colony does not admit of a large attendance; but we heartily welcome you to our shores and hope you will enjoy a holiday visiting some of the principal mining centres and exchanging ideas, which not only improves our minds, and widens our field research, but also tends to lead to further economic improvements in the extraction of metals the earth contains...

"The history of Duluth commences with Daniel de Greysolon du Lhut, one of the explorers of the Upper Mississippi who came to the head of the lakes in the summer of 1679. Radisson and Groseillier, and Claude Allouez, a Jesuit priest, are supposed to have visited the head of the lakes, -but there is no authentic record previous to that of du Lhut.In 1792, the fur traders established a fort at Fond du Lac, fifteen miles up the St. Louis River from Lake Superior, but within the limits of the present city •of Duluth. In the early 50's, there were a few scattering settlers at Oneota and around the George Stuntz trading post on Minnesota point. In 1855-6, the settlement on Minnesota point was called Duluth, commemorating the name du Lhut, and organized as a town in 1857. The first board of trustees and town council consisted of -William Nettleton, J. B. Culver; Robert E. Jefferson, Grin W. Rice and William Old: In 1870, the city of Duluth was incorporated, and five years later a portion of the same territory was incorporated as the village of Duluth, and the two municipal corporations were still in existence on March 1, 1887, when the city and the village of Duluth were incorporated as the present city.The first saw mill in Duluth was erected in 1856-57, on the present site of the ship canal. It cut logs from a virgin forest at the upper end of Minnesota point.The first railroad was built to the head of the lakes in 1870. The charter for this road had been granted in 1861 to the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad Company, afterward called the St. Paul and Duluth, and which is now a part of the Northern Pacific Railroad."

This work was done to provide thermodynamic, electrical, physical, and compositional data on the seeded combustion plasmas of seven coals for the design of MHD generators. The systems were assumed to be at equilibrium, and the design data were generated by solving for the composition of both gas and liquid phases with a digital computer. The coals reported in this study include a western subbituminous, a Pennsylvania anthracite, and five representative bituminous coals. The data include dewpoint temperatures of both slag and seed. A Mollier diagram for each coal is given to allow graphical generator calculations.

This report present the results of a laboratory and field research program aimed at design and development of a torque-thrust controlled bolter with the capability to (1) predict the "quality of anchorage" attained while installing mechanical anchor roofbolts, and (2) improve the uniformity and tension levels achieved among a group of roofbolts. The prediction accuracy of the anchorage quality algorithm ranged from low to moderate because of the complexity and variability of the phenomena involved. The best roof support with mechanical anchor bolts was found to be achieved by simply installing them under ? proper torque-thrust control, and with ? a hardened washer under the bolthead. This procedure resulted in an improvement in uniformity of 3 times, along with an increase in mean tension levels of 75% over conventionally installed roofbolts.

The purity of three specially prepared samples of benzene was determined with an adiabatic, low-temperature calorimeter with automatic control of shield temperature. Extensive measurements were made on each sample to determine how variations in operating procedures affect melting-point and freezing-point as well as purity data obtained by the calorimetric method. Detailed results of the investigations are presented, and effects of different operating procedures are discussed, together with problems encountered in interpretating experimental results.

"Why do some room and pillar retreat panels encounter abnormal conditions? What factors deserve the most consideration during the planning and execution phases of mining and what can be done to mitigate those abnormal conditions when they are encountered? To help answer these questions, and to determine some of the relevant factors influencing the conditions of room and pillar (R&P) retreat mining entries, four consecutive R&P retreat panels were evaluated. This evaluation was intended to reinforce the influence of topographic changes, depth of cover, multiple-seam interactions, geological conditions, and mining geometry.This paper details observations made in four consecutive R&P retreat panels and the data collected from an instrumentation site during retreat mining. The primary focus was on the differences observed among the four panels and within the panels themselves. The instrumentation study was initially planned to evaluate the interactions between primary and secondary support, but produced rather interesting results relating to the loading encountered under the current mining conditions. In addition to the observation and instrumentation, numerical modeling was performed to evaluate the stress conditions. Both the LaModel 3.0 and Rocscience Phase2 programs were used to evaluate these four panels. The results of both models indicated a drastic reduction in the vertical stresses experienced in these panels due to the full extraction mining in overlying seams when compared to the full overburden load. Both models showed a higher level of stress associated with the outside entries of the panels. These results agree quite well with the observations and instrumentation studies performed at the mine.These efforts provided two overarching conclusions concerning R&P retreat mine planning and execution. The first was that there are four areas that should not be overlooked during R&P retreat mining: topographic relief, multiple-seam stress relief, stress concentrations near the gob edge, and geologic changes in the immediate roof. The second is that in order to successfully retreat an R&P panel, a three-phased approach to the design and analysis of the panel should be conducted: the planning phase, evaluation phase, and monitoring phase."

On the 26th of June 2000 a hydraulic fill retaining barricade failed at the Bronzewing mine in Western Australia. The barricade failure resulted in the release of 19,000 m3 of saturated hydraulic fill into the mine and caused the deaths of three miners. Following this tragic accident, the practices and procedures of mines using hydraulic fills came under intense scrutiny by regulatory bodies and mining companies. At this time, the use of hydraulic fill at Normandy?s zinc/copper Scuddles mine was suspended and waste rock became the sole backfill material in use underground. By 2003, development of the adjacent Gossan Hill mine had progressed to a point where a self supporting fill material was required to enable full recovery of high grade ore. Cemented hydraulic fill (CHF) was identified as the optimal fill type and work began on designing appropriate management procedures and controls to ensure the safe implementation. This work included definition of the fill properties, plant design and construction, reticulation system design, design of stope barricades and drainage systems and fill placement control and monitoring practices. CHF placement began on 16th July 2004 and has continued to date. Significant operational experience has since been gained in areas including plant performance, fill product quality assurance, barricade construction, stope drainage and in-situ performance.

It is one of a series published by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in various mining districts of the United States. This report gives a history of the district and outlines early prospecting and exploration including methods of sampling and estimation of ore tonnage and value at the Miami mine. Early mining methods are described, particularly those that influenced developments in the caving method. Mine exploration, development, and operating methods for block caving are described with particular attention to those factors, physical, economic, engineering, and managerial that have improved efficiency in the mining operations over a long productive period. Discussion of the paper of D. W. Brunton, presented at the Spokane meeting, September, 1909, and published in Bulletin No. 33, September, 1909, pp. 837 to 855. WILLIAM' KENT, New York, N. Y.:-The Institute may congratulate itself on the opportunity of reading the splendid address of President Brunton. It is au admirable summary of the progress that has been made in the mining and metallurgical arts in recent years. The paper rightly give's the chief credit for this progress to the aid which has been rendered to these arts by the advances in mechanics, chemistry, and electricity. It is notable that most of the headings in Mr. Brunton's address refer to the work of the mechanical engineer, the electrical engineer, and the chemist, rather than to that of the specialist in mining-operations. It seems that. the most successful mining engineer of the present day is the one who makes the most intelligent application of the inventions and designs of engineers and others who are not directly engaged in mining. A tabulation' of the headings of the address, grouped as below, shows this most clearly. "When utilizing high recovery underground mining methods, such as longwall or high-extraction room-and-pillar mining, the movement and deformation of the overburden propagate toward the surface and may affect the integrity of overlying surface streams (Peng et al, 1996). Published studies cite three major mechanisms of subsidence as most likely to impact streams: displacement, slope and strain. While subsidence-induced vertical displacement cause little structural damage to the stream bed, it may create adverse drainage and stream flow issues as the subsidence trough allows for ponding (Dawkins, 2003). Subsidenceinduced changes to the slope, or tilt, of a stream may have adverse effects on water flow. As the stream enters the subsidence trough, the gradient increases providing potential erosion control problems. When exiting the subsidence trough, a reduction of the gradient may inhibit stream flow, causing localized ponding (Peng, 2008). While vertical displacement and tilt both may have detrimental effects to surface streams, the resulting strains have been documented as being the most damaging to surface streams and structures causing distortion, fractures, or failure (Singh, 1992). When stream beds are subjected to high tensile strain, tensile cracks may form at the surface level allowing for the direct loss of stream flow through fissures. When stream beds are located in areas of high compressive strain, rock layers forming the stream bed can fail as the stream bed ruptures, upward, blocking stream flow or having the stream diverted into the fracture zone at the base (Iannacchione, et. al., 2010).Recent investigations on the effects of underground mining on surface bodies of water suggest that to determine the degree of stream impact one must also consider the geologic structure and thicknesses, surface topography, watershed drainage areas, width of river bed and rate of mining. Due to the complex nature and number of parameters affecting surface streams, subsidence modeling tools and software packages should be implemented throughout all stages of subsidence planning, prediction and control. The Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS) utilizes the influence function for the calculation of final subsidence deformations with respect to the angle of influence, supercritical subsidence factor as a function of the percent hard rock, edge effect offset distance, and surface topography. Developed more than 25 years ago, SDPS has been continually updated with new analysis and prediction features, providing a reliable and versatile program for subsidence management methodologies. Most recently, the program has been updated to evaluate the effect of varying surface topography in the prediction of horizontal displacements, referred to as ground strain, allowing for the accurate three-dimensional representation of surface deformations in mountainous terrain (Agioutantis and Karmis, 2014). Ground strain has become one of the predominant deformation indices used in the evaluation of potential damage to surface structures (Karmis et al., 1995). Ongoing work with SDPS software seeks to investigate the calculation of ground strain in SDPS and its ability to accurately and realistically predict damage to surface streams due to underground mining operations."

Away back in the eighties of the last century, when Sir Charles, then Doctor, Tupper, was not only a prominent but a dominant figure in the political life of Nova Scotia, his opponents brought the railing accusation against him that he was the foremost of egotists because of his frequent use of the personal pronoun. I heard Tupper speak and had no sympathy with the railers, because I could not well see how the pronoun could be dispensed with without laying himself open to a charge of affectation. I shall make reference in what follows to incidents in which I have taken part, and shall be at no pains to dispense with the pronoun, even though thereby I lay my-self open to the charge of being a pupil of the deceased states-man. EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE ORGANIZATION OF THE PROVINCIAL WORKMEN'S ASSOCIATION The Springhill Mining Company began development work at Springhill in the early seventies of last century. So vigorously was the work prosecuted that in 18 7 4 two slopes, the east and the west, were in active operation, with a considerable. output, the east slope on occasional days producing 800 tons. The President of the Company, the late Senator McFarlane, was a Nova Scotian, the other directors were mainly merchants from St. John, N.B. From the first the enterprise was an .astonishing success, due in the greatest part to its geographical position, and in large part to the untiring vigilance of the directors, a majority of whom visited the collieries at short intervals, thereby keeping the manager, much of the time, on tenter hooks.

Batch and continuous - circuit flotation , leaching , precipitation , and electrodeposition studies were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine optimum conditions for treatment of complex mercury - antimony sulfide and mercury- arsenic sulfide ores and concentrates . On the Red Devil ore sample over 95 percent of both the mercury and antimony sulfides were recovered in a flotation concentrate containing 35.6 percent mercury and 21.0 percent antimony . By selective flotation a mercury concentrate containing 71.0 percent mercury and 2.9 percent antimony was obtained with a mercury recovery of 90.4 percent . Leaching results show that , with 150 grams per liter of sodium sulfide and 50 grams per liter of sodium hydroxide , 95 to 99 percent of the mercury , antimony , and arsenic sulfides could be extracted from the concentrates treated . Sodium hydroxide reagent consumption was based on the sulfides generated in the dissolution of the sulfide minerals and on the method of metal recovery used . Selective leaching of the antimony and arsenic sulfides with potassium sulfide dissolved more than 95 percent of either of these two sulfides and 0.5 to 5 percent of the mercury sulfide present . Methods for recovering mercury and antimony from solution were electrodeposition of mercury followed by electrodeposition of antimony , aluminum precipitation of both mercury and antimony , or antimony precipitation of mercury followed by antimony electrodeposition . This report is the 22d in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations.2 3/ A summary of work published during 1957 and of work in progress is presented. Details regarding the subjects treated in the publications may be found by referring to articles cited in the footnotes. The objective of the coal work of the Bureau of Mines is to obtain information that will lead to improved production and utilization of coal, thus conserving a most important national asset.4 5/ Though studies of mining methods and exploration of various coalfields ma; contribute directly to improved production, no less so does the work in health and safety. The many problems relating to chemical and physical properties of coal reflect the need for an understanding of these properties for the most effective use of coal in its various fields of application and for the development of new methods of processing coal. Studies of existing and proposed processes of combustion, carbonization, gasification and hydrogenation of coal are necessary for increased efficiency in its use. Engineering service provided by the Bureau is of direct value in the conservation program in preventing waste. Stations where the main coal activities of the Bureau are carried out are shown in the following list:

There is no more important problem today than industrial relationship, and probably none that is receiving more thought. But in these days of Epie and Utopia, one has to be rather careful in speaking on this subject. Consequently, for fear that my plea for taking the working man into the family might be misconstrued, by some, as a step towards communism or socialism, I would like to say at the outset that I believe that, so long as we have human individualism, human ambitions, human hopes and fears, straight socialism is as far off as the Millennium. The same applies to communism, which only differs from socialism in that the communist realizes that his ideals can only be attained by massacring millions and destroying all that we hold sacred. Each still looks to Russia for inspiration and guidance, totally disregarding the Soviet swing-back to individual contract work and differential wage scales. They seem to be oblivious of the tyranny and repression in the present Russian system, and get very restless when reminded of it. In spite of the fact that the standard of living in civilized countries has improved tremendously and is still improving, we find that, every seven or eight years, production in many lines has outstripped consumption, and we have had panics or depressions of greater or less magnitude, accompanied by extensive unemployment. It is evident to every thinking person that there must be no little inefficiency in the control of industry. For four long years, governments and industrialists have striven to find the key to solve the present problem. Many countries are getting back to a position approaching normal-Canada probably more so than most. None, however, can feel assured that they have actually cured the situation. All kinds of schemes have been developed; tariff barriers have sprung up over-night where none existed before; currencies have been inflated to gain added security in the home markets and to try to gain advantage in export trade; and each country watches the movements of the others with fear and mistrust. I am not prepared to formulate a full solution of our troubles, but I hope to be able to demonstrate the feasibility and wisdom of the type of industrial relationship I advocate, and also that it may be a large, and possibly an essential, step towards the solution of our difficulties.
