Severe service ball valve performance has a direct impact on the mechanical availability of high pressure oxidation and leach plants. The primary function of these valves is to isolate the autoclave for maintenance. Valve failure has historically contributed significantly to the maintenance downtime of these process plants. An understanding of the root causes of valve failures is the first step in increasing the reliability of the severe service ball valves. A rigorous failure analysis practice has been developed by Hatch for investigating refractory failures in furnaces and kilns based on Kepner-Tregoe methodology. The method has also been modified for valve failure analysis. From a root-cause failure tree analysis of each of the valve components, a list of all potential valve failure mechanisms was developed for ranking and evaluation, along with recommendations for further valve development. The purpose of this paper is to present the reader with the modified Kepner-Tregoe method and examples of this analysis.

The Mine Health and Safety Act No. 29 of 1996, as amended, embeds an occupational health and safety management system that facilitates communication between representatives of the state, capital, and labour. In underground mines, two communication loops between these role players serve to separate the production chain of command from the political tripartite relations. Worker-elected health and safety representatives are involved in both communication loops, but are severely constrained in escalating their occupational health and safety concerns to the legalpolitical level. This has a direct bearing on the exercise of the Right to Refuse Dangerous Work (RRDW). As previously reported, health and safety representatives were found to primarily consult their production supervisors in preference to their trade-union representatives. This follow-up article presents production supervisor perspectives on the RRDW. The study demonstrates how, for mineworkers, the two distinct communication subsystems constrain, rather than facilitate, implementation of the RRDW.

The United States Bureau of Mines frequently receives requests for information regarding the details of its organization and the nature of its activities. In response to such an inquiry a series of articles outlining the work of the bureau as a whole and of its different divisions was prepared and published in the United States Daily, Washington, D. C., during November, 1929. These articles are reprinted here in the hone that they may assist in giving the public a more complete understanding of the aims and purposes of the bureau and the methods by which it is laboring for the attainment of safer conditions and more efficient methods in American mineral industries. The design of foundations for the tall buildings of lower Manhattan rely on the use of high capacity, rock anchors to resist overturning forces generated by lateral loads from wind, earth, water and, to a lesser degree, seismic forces. Once completed, the proposed towers at the World Trade Center (WTC) site will be among the tallest buildings in New York City. The towers are exposed to coastal winds and from several levels of below grade structure soil and water loads. The design loading required under the current New York City Building Code (NYCBC) is similar to the requirements of the building code used to design the original WTC Twin Towers. We will compare how rock anchors were deployed in the Twin Towers and how they are used in the new buildings. Changes to the building code are less significant that the changes to the design of the structure; that is how the outer skin or perimeter structure interacts with the building core. The result is a significant increase in the number of rock anchors required for the new buildings when compared to those installed in the original WTC Twin Towers.

A review of the practices of analyzing for precious metals at the Reno Research Center, U.S. Bureau of mines, is presented. A general description of fire assaying, the physical layout of a fire assay laboratory, and the use of fire assaying in combination with atomic absorption, induction coupled plasma, and emission spectroscopy is reviewed. The combination of techniques significantly decreases the detection limits for precious metal analyses and simplifies the analysis of the platinum-group metals. Methods of protecting personnel from ingestion of lead are also discussed.

Fiji is a developing nation that relies on economic opportunities and recently experienced increased interest in mining and mineral exploration that could potentially benefit the country. In order to understand the lack of, or failure of, past rehabilitation activity, this study applied risk-based approaches to identify the significance of activities or actions applicable to rehabilitation of post-mined land in Fiji. This involved the use of qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative risk methodologies, which allow assessment and evaluation of mechanisms of mining administration and practices, as well as rehabilitation methods and approaches that have been applied successfully to post-mined land in other countries with similar environmental and climatic conditions and social and regulatory environments to Fiji. The semi-quantitative risk-based technique followed an earlier approach applied for mine closure by Laurence (2006) and provided a systematic way to assess and evaluate rehabilitation issues that were identified on-site by assessors, who were able to estimate through expert judgement the likelihood and consequences based on conditions, situations observed and circumstances on-site. It demonstrated that experienced professionals could reproducibly score likelihood and consequence of selected items relevant to mine site rehabilitation, despite the wide-ranging issues identified during post mined land rehabilitation. The quantitative risk-based approach was adopted as a method to determine environmental bonds for mining projects using the assessment of consequences and likelihood results from the semi-quantitative approach, then incorporating unit cost of materials or activities for local conditions required to fully rehabilitate each issue at net present value. Application to both an abandoned mine site and a newly opened mine site in Fiji showed that this approach could provide a risk-based estimate for rehabilitation cost and demonstrated potential applicable in the Fijian context.CITATION:Soro, A T, Mulligan, D R, McIlveen, G, Franks, D M, Robinson, J J and Noller, B N, ?2014. "In October 1982, Rio Algom Limited, purchased a tin prospect near East Kemptville, Nova Scotia, from Shell Canada Resources. This purchase led to the development of the first substantial tin mine in North America. This paper deals with the drillingand blasting operations at Rio Algom, in particular the use of emulsion explosives technology.This presentation describes what emulsion explosives and Heavy AN/FO are, and the support system used to deliver these products to the blast site.HistoryThe East Kemptville mine site was discovered by Shell Canada Resources (SCR) in July 1978. SCR started diamond drilling on the tin prospect in March 1979. After 8220 m of BQ drilling, it was estimated a reserve of 56 000 000 tonnes of 0.165% Sn was present.The property, which is located 54 km northeast of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia (Fig. 1), showed, after a feasibility study that, given an ore treatment rate of 9000 tonnes per day, a mine life of 17 years could be expected.GeologyThe tin deposit of the East Kemptville Mine, occurs in granitic rocks at their contact with metasedimentary rocks. The mineralization is in the form of cassiterite with associated sulphides of copper and zinc. The tin occurs in a stockwork of tin bearing Greisen alteration zones.East Kemptville MineThe mine planned an open pit operation with the first five years being mined at a rate of 14 000 tonnes per day, of which 5000 tonnes will be waste and low grade ore. Eventually, the total mining rate will be 21 000 tonnes per day, including 12 000 tonnes of waste and low grade ore. Figure 2 shows the general layout of the mine site.East Kemptville Chooses Emulsion ExplosivesIn December 1984, East Kemptville Mine awarded the Explosives Division of C-I-L Inc. a contract to supply explosives to the borehole. The system chosen gives East Kemptville the on-the-bench choice of regular AN/Fa, or a high density, Heavy AN /Fa product called SuperAN· or a water resistant emulsion explosive called MAGNAFRAC· for holes that cannot be dewatered.Emulsion ExplosivesAn emulsion is an intimate mixture of two liquids that do not dissolve in each other. Longwall face-to-face transfers can cost over $100 per minute in lost production potential and $100,000 for personnel and supplies. Such high cost makes extensive planning and control of the transfer process a critical necessity for the economic feasibility of longwall operations. This paper reports operations research techniques used for the analysis and modeling of longwall face-to-face transfers. Transfer data has been collected from companies who operate over 30% of the total U.S. longwall faces. Comprehensive sequence networks of existing longwall transfers were developed; simulation models of transfers under varying conditions were generated; and, the economics of general transfers and time-cost tradeoffs in the transfer procedure were investigated.

The widening of the Panama Canal to approximately 130 feet (40 m) for its entire length began just a few years ago. The original expansion program was slated for completion in 18 to 20 years, but has recently been reduced for completion within the next four years. This means that a tremendous amount of blasting at simultaneous points along the canal, by both the Panama Canal Commission (PCC) and many subcontractors, is necessary to achieve the new completion deadline. The accelerated program also imposed many logistical concerns, since marine trafIic is always heavy and cannot be stopped for blasting. Because some of the large and heavy cargo vessels clear the bottom of the canal by only about 6 feet ( 2 m), the blasting cannot result in any large boulders into the center of the canal, for fear of grounding and damaging a vessel, not to mention the traffic delays and lost income of approximately 1 to 2 million dollars per day.

A new water treatment plant is to be constructed for a portion of the water supply system of New York City. The project includes construction of new water conveyance tunnels crossing perpendicular and sub-parallel to the existing pressurized water tunnel at two locations. A study was conducted to evaluate the impact of new tunnel construction on stability of the existing tunnel and hydrojacking potential in the surrounding rock mass. This paper introduces a practical approach to evaluate tunnel interaction, expressed in terms of rock-liner interaction, stress-induced stability and hydrojacking failures. A simple method to evaluate hydraulic and mechanical properties of concrete liners and jointed rock mass is also presented.

Stimulated by 4 years of continuous economic growth without inflation, demand for energy in the United States reached an alltime high in 1964. Total value of production of goods and services (gross national product--GNP) for the year was $629 billion, an increase of 6.8 percent from 1963. Allowing for price changes based on 1958 dollars, the gain in real terms was 5 percent. In 1964 the Federal Reserve Board Index of Industrial Production stood at 132, a rise of 6.2 percent. With the impetus provided by personal income and corporate tax reductions during the year, aggregate wages, profits, and consumption reached record levels. Even the persistent balance of payments problem improved. Against this background the national consumption of commercial energy increased 4.2 percent. Energy needs continued to be met largely from domestic resources with imports, mainly crude petroleum and refined petroleum products, accounting for but 7 percent of the total. Mineral energy resources, namely gas, coal, and petroleum, contributed 96 percent of the input of energy into the economy during the year. The remaining 4 percent came from hydropower and nuclear power.

"AbstractThe construction of a distribution centre of minerals for a global mining and resources cooperation demanded the control of deformations and displacement of the stack reclaimer facilities on very inhomogeneous subsoil conditions. The variation of quality from soft clay with CPT values below 1 MPa up to rock formations were the challenge in design and execution of all the foundation works.The advanced design considerations were resulting in a barrier wall system to limit the deformations of the up to 40 m deep bored pile of the stacker-reclaimers, whereas the layout of the barrier wall and the stiffness of the elements had a major impact on the residual lateral forces to be absorbed by the bearing structure.IntroductionA large international raw material distribution organisation is currently building an iron ore and pellet distribution centre on the north-western coast of Malaysia. The distribution centre will handle around 90 MTPA (million tons per annum) of iron ore and includes accompanying plants for loading and unloading iron ore and pellets, pelletizing plants as well as corresponding storage space for these raw materials. The total storage space extends about 800m north to south respectively 1400m east to west and is about 200m from the coastline. The project area is located in a wide valley basin, bounded by a range of hills to the north. The existence of soil with low bearing capability in the area designated for the plant meant that measurements for ground improvement were required in the storage areas, in order to combine the needs of iron ore and pellet storage areas with requirements of the loading facilities as the overall project demand.Project LayoutThe iron ore distribution centre and the pelletizing facility both consist of an import/export jetty, material handling facilities, pellet plant and the associated infrastructure. This publication describes the execution of ground improvement and foundation works for the loading and storage system, which consists of five rows of stockpiles and four intermediate rows of stacker-reclaimers. The total area of these systems comprises 278,881 m2 (Fig. 1)."

BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc (BHPB) has been mining kimberlite from several pipes at the Ekati Diamond MineTM located 300 km north of Yellowknife since 1997. Processing of kimberlite produces coarse kimberlite rejects (CKR, 0.5 to 8 mm) and fine tailings (less than 0.5 mm). The CKR are trucked to the Coarse Kimberlite Reject Storage Area (CKRSA) located within the drainage area of the tailings impoundment (Long Lake Containment Facility û LLCF). The coarse rejects are wet when dumped and are expected to freeze as a result of annual average site temperatures of about -10¦C. Seasonal thawing occurs along the exposed edges of the pile. Monitoring of the CKR indicates they have consistently low sulfur concentrations (0.4 per cent) accompanied by high acid neutralisation potentials (78 to 337 kg CaCO3/t). Carbonate concentrations vary from 0.9 per cent to 3.4 per cent. The CKR are therefore not potentially acid generating based on conventional laboratory testing. Monitoring of stagnant pools on the tundra downgradient of the CKRSA has shown that water originating from the pile resembles acid rock drainage (ARD). Water pHs can be less than 4, and sulfate concentrations are typically in the thousands of milligrams per litre. Conventional flowing toe seeps are pH neutral but also have elevated sulfate concentrations. Investigations conducted in the summer of 2002 revealed no evidence of in situ acid generation. Pore water chemistry is probably controlled by oxidation of fine-grained pyrite, neutralisation of acidity by calcium and magnesium carbonates and silicates, and freeze concentration of pore water. The acidity observed in tundra pools downgradient of the CKRSA appears to be a result of leaching and mobilisation of iron under reducing conditions at the CKR-soil contact. Downstream of the CKRSA, reduced iron oxidises and is hydrolysed on contact with the atmosphere causing pH depression. BHPB is applying the findings of this study by constructing facilities containing kimberlite on granite pads. These in turn are placed on frozen ground so that the foundations remain frozen and limits contact of wastes with the acidic soils.

In developing countries throughout the world, gold ores are being processed by mercury amal-gamation, a technique long banned in the U.S. - unless a retort operation is used for mercury recovery - due to mercury toxicity and its effects on the environment. Amalgamation is a simple process that involves contacting a ground, slurried concentrate or ore with mercury in a slightly agitated vessel, usually for several hours, The amalgamated mercury is separated by gravity and then filtered through a fine cloth to collect the gold amalgam as a sponge, which is then fired to remove the final remnants of mercury and produce high quality gold. However, in Peru and other developing countries in South America and throughout the world, tailings are simply discarded into uncontrolled drainages and ponds and the sponge is fired in the open air. Clearly, in this case, environmental friendly and, to make matters worse, is typically conducted by family members of all ages without proper protection. Furthermore, the technique is inefficient, yielding approximately 50% gold recovery. For the past two years, faculty members from Montana Tech in Butte, MT, USA and the Universidad Nactonal del Altiplano in Puno, Peru have teamed to study the La Rinconada Mine Complex located in southern Peru approximately 100 kilometers north of Lake Titicaca and 25 kilometers west of Bolivia. The mining complex is over 5,000 meters above sea level and exists at the foot of a receding glacier in the Andes Mountains. A suite of soil and water samples collected in 2001 documented extensive Hg contamination in the Rinconada area [1]. The present paper summa¬rizes a follow-up investigation in July-2002, in which water samples were collected at numerous locations along the 200 km length of the Rio Ramis, from the Rinconada mine com¬plex to Lake Titicaca, In addition, we report new results of Hg analyses of fish from Lake Titi¬caca, The results of this study have relevance to safety and health concerns for the miners as well as people in downstream communities.

Mintek has been developing Pt-based alloys for high temperature applications in aggressive environments, for example, land-based turbine engines, to replace the currently used nickel-based superalloys (NBSAs). The Pt-based alloys have a similar structure to the NBSAs, and since Pt is more chemically inert and has a higher melting point, the Pt-based alloys can potentially be used at higher temperatures. The greater chemical inertness of the Pt-based alloys compared to the NBSAs means that coatings can be simpler, or perhaps not even used at all, depending on the environment. TEM work was done at NIMS, Japan, to investigate the changes in the microstructure o f Pt-Al and Pt-Al-Ir alloys at elevated temperatures using in-situheating up to1100°C. Initial casting trials showed that work needs to be done to optimise casting parameters before commercialisation can take place. Room temperature tensile tests were performed and results were variable mainly due to microstructural differences. The alloy hardnesses were in the order of 300-350HV with ultimate tensile strengths of ~800 MPa and elongations of less than 10%. The paper by Lewis and Braun l presents experimental and calculational evidence that primary chalcopyrite ores are rapidly oxidized by warm oxygen-bearing water. Resulting solutions contained copper sulfate products of the matrix rock decomposition such as magnesium sulfate and sulphuric acid. Iron was oxidized to insoluble hematite and hydrous iron sulfates. Oxygen injection near the base of a broken and permeable flooded ore deposit was calculated to cause circulation of oxidizing solutions to the entire permeable region. The rate of dissolution of copper and degree of oxygen saturation for given oxygen injection rates were presented. Their work suggests that in-situ recovery of deep, disseminate primary copper deposits is technically feasible. The actual feasibility depends on economics and environmental safety as well, and it is the purpose of this paper to address these two aspects.

The occurrence of heavy minerals in the oil sands of Alberta has long been known and has been well documented in the literature. Unfortunately most of the researchers working on this resource have been unable to produce products that meet acceptable market specifications. This has resulted in many misconceptions about this resource. Recent efforts have shown that with some innovative approaches, marketable material can be produced and as a result it might finally be possible to realize the potential of this immense resource that, some have estimated, could contain in excess of 20% of the world demand by 2010. This paper highlights the uniqueness of this mineral assemblage and the mineral processing challenges it presents. It shows the most recent work that has resulted in the production of marketable titanium and zircon products. This paper also focuses on some of the special problems resulting from the variability in the heavy mineral suite. Of special interest is the occurrence and removal of bitumen and pyrite without adding to the sulphur dioxide loading in the regional airshed. The trend by the mining industry to develop various positions on ‘sustainable mining’ has some significance for the heavy mineral industry. Although the industry generally has an excellent track record of eventually rehabilitating disturbed ground in an acceptable manner, heavy mineral mining operations tend to have a relatively large footprint of disturbance and the industry is under considerable pressure to develop options that are more environmentally acceptable. In addition, as operators move to exploit deposits that are lower grade and/or are further from a port site, the emissions per unit of sold product will also rise and the industry will be under pressure to address this issue as well. Because heavy minerals from oil sands are by-products of existing operations, there are virtually no incremental disturbances or emissions that would be associated with heavy mineral production. All mining and tailings remediation issues are accounted for by the oil sand operation. The only incremental emissions would be those associated with the mineral processing operations and transport of finished products to a port site. This paper discusses the environmental and cost implications of this situation.
