During the period 1979 thru 1982, Multi Mineral Corporation conducted a mining research program at the United States Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines Oil Shale Mining Environmental Research Facility in the Central Piceance Creek Basin, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The program consisted of mining, environmental and geotechnical research data and the results are described in this report.

Research personnel from the Bureau of Mines, a representative of the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and research contractors for the Bureau of Mines met with other Government and industry representatives at three seminar locations in December 1980 to discuss the findings and products of Bureau research on mine safety training. The research program is aimed at providing assistance to the mining community in its efforts to reduce industrial-type, human-error accidents through research establishing performance based methods and media for employee training. Research emphasis is directed toward development of baseline materials and instructional models; development of methods for structuring and evaluating health and safety, supervisory, and occupational training; and the continued investigation and application of current learning and simulation technology that could significantly enhance the effectiveness of training opportunities.

Most copper refineries use conventional wheel systems to cast anodes. over a period of time the copper moulds that are used become warped and cracks develop. To control mould warpage, the mould's are either rejected after a certain warpage is reached, or the shape is restored by mechanical means. The cracks, unless they are very severe, are repaired by a peening process. Even with regular maintenance to control warpage and cracks, the moulds have a limited useful life. If warpage and cracks are not controlled, anode quality deteriorates and tankhouse operations are seriously affected. -An intensive study was initiated to develop means of controlling mould warpage which culminated in the d?evelopment of technology to control mould warpage to within ±1. 5 mm, and at the same time effectively contr0l: cracking and significantly increase the mould life-. The warpage control has been achieved by using a unique mould design. Mould cavities are present on both sides of the mould and periodic inverting controls the wa-rpage in the cavities. The mould casting procedure has been developed and all production wheels have been converted to the new mould design. The performance characteristics of these moulds will be detailed. 21

THIS paper is a discussion of the extremely valuable one of Mathewson and Phillips, The Recrystallization of Cold-Worked Alpha Brass on Annealing,1 which not only gives us a wealth of important data reached with great intelligence, but also shows both uncommon powers of imagination and a perfectly fair spirit. Let me try to analyze some of their results, and to enunciate some of the laws to which these results point. For brevity I refer to them as "The Authors." The page numbers in parentheses refer to their paper. 1. The Visible Aspects of Recrystallization.-Plastic deformation in a single direction, as in cold-rolling, draws the grains out in that direction, that is, inequiaxes them, without destroying their apparent individuality. Each grain seems to endure the drawing out without changing either its volume or its orientation materially, for the etching tint of each grain seems to be as uniform after as before the drawing out, save for the "etch bands,"2 shown in Figs. A to D of the Authors' Plate I. As the drawn-out metal is heated progressively, on reaching a certain "disintegration temperature" these old grains seem to break up, probably into submicroscopic fragments, and this apparent disintegration is followed by a coalescence of these fragments, so that their number decreases and their size increases, till they may become very much coarser than before the drawing out. Ruder3 coarsened the grains of silicon steel in this way till single grains reached an area of 50 cm. (7.75 sq. in.). The deformation itself probably breaks each grain up into many very small fragments, but the fact that each grain continues to have a uniform etching tint different from that of its neighbors indicates that these fragments retain the initial common orientation of the grain. The apparent disintegration which we observe, then, is rather an abandonment of community of orientation for individuality of orientation, by the fragments formed earlier during the deformation. The Late Paleocene–Middle Eocene phosphate nodules of Solan District of Himachal Pradesh belong to green facies of Subathu Formation of Sirmur group. Field observations indicate sporadic distribution of phosphatic nodules in the yellow brown to rusty brown, buff-colored bleach shales. Phosphatic nodules are dull earthy to dark grayish in color and break with sharp and conchoidal surfaces. Studies of phosphatic nodules using petrological microscope, X-ray diffractometry, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) attached with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) reveal that cryptocrystalline apatite (fluorapatite) is the dominant phosphate mineral. Silt sized silica is the dominant gangue, whereas pyrite and muscovite are present as minor gangue. The phosphate minerals occur as oolites, pellets, and cryptocrystalline apatite in the groundmass. Silica veins form a network replacing the original phosphatic matrix. Brown to brownish black color may be attributed by the organic matter in the phosphatic nodules. Completely phosphatized radiolaria and partially pyritized planktonic foraminifera are observed. There is corroboration of organic matter in the form of microbial filaments in the groundmass of apatite. The findings in the present investigation indicate that the different forms of the minerals, their texture, and distribution in the phosphatic nodules might be due to environmental vicissitudes in oxidizing to reducing conditions followed by replacement processes. Presence of microbial filaments may be due to the active role of microorganisms during the formation of these phosphatic nodules.

To promote the safety and health of U.S. mineworkers, researchers with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are currently involved in gathering additional field data from the nation’s underground coal mines. The purpose of this field study was to monitor ground movement and changes in pressure during mining where conditions include a thick parting in the coal seam. To accomplish this, three arrays of field instrumentation were installed in the wraparound bleeder of a room-and-pillar panel at the Maple Eagle mine located in southern West Virginia. Borehole pressure cells (BPCs) were used to monitor the change in pressure in pillars located adjacent to the gob. Roof extensometers were installed to measure roof sag at various horizons in the immediate roof, while rib extensometers were installed to measure displacement of the in-seam parting as mining progressed. Additionally, visual observations and manual measurements were taken during subsequent site visits. The repeatability of results, important from a scientific perspective, was accomplished by successfully obtaining field measurements from two nearly identical instrumentation sites. The data collected indicated that the front abutment extent at the edge of the panel was approximately 200 ft, corresponding to a distance of 9– 10 times the square root of the depth. Yielding of the slabbed pillar began when the pillar line was approximately 290 ft outby the instrumentation sites. This was followed by load shedding onto the abutments and the measurement of small amounts of roof sag in the No. 1 entry. Instrumentation data, as presented in this paper, can be used to better understand stress redistribution, pillar performance, and roof/rib displacements. Additionally, this data is suitable for assisting in the calibration of numerical models. Insight gained from applying these models can be used to make better engineering-based judgments for conditions that could potentially be encountered in the future.

THE most important part of the routine survey work on a mine is the keeping up-to-date of plans and sections showing progress of stoping and development work, and the direction of the latter for the purpose of making necessary connections. Except in specialcircumstances, e.g., major horizoittal development, the exactitude required in this work is not extreme, and a method of survey in keeping with the demands of the work itself is all tbat is required.For example, no one would consider measuring the walls of a stope to a fraction of an inch; such extreme accuracy would be wasted.The stope walls being irregular, a mean is usually taken, and for ordinary purposes a survey with a limiting error of six inches is quite satisfactory for the purpose of plotting either stoping or development.It is the author's aim in this paper to describe the method in use at the North Broken Hill Oompany's British mine. This method, while being sufficiently accurate for the purpose in view, possesses the very great advantages of speed and simplicity of operation,with a minimum of necessary equipment. This latter is a very important item where several surveys on different levels have to be carried out on the one day.Let it be understood, however, that the use of this method does not dispense with the theodolite, but simply serves as a convenient adjunct to obtain details and to extend the accurate theodolite survey up rises and down winzes, and through ladderways orwinzes into stopes, where the use of a theodolite, if not actually impossible, is often exceedingly inconvenient. [Testing explosives for safe use in coal miner ran boon an important factor in preventing mine explosions. In the United States, explosives that have been approved by the Bureau of Mines are called permissible explosives. A purvey of the history of coal mining since permissibility testing welt, instituted some 4 years ago shown that there is no record of a coal-mime explosion caused by permissible explosives when used in a manner prescribed by the Bureau. To maintain the appropriate standards of quality, the Bureau of Mines conducts a series of examinations and tenth on samples of explosives collected in the field. In what is considered the most crucial test, teat 1, the explosives An fired from a steel cannon into a gallery atmosphere containing a mixture of natural gas and air, In another important test, test 4, the explosives charge to fired into a mixture of natural gas, air, and coal diet. To satisfy the permissibility requirements, the explosive must undergo throe gallery teats without igniting gas or coal duet. Other tests also are required for permissibility, but they do not come within the scope of the present paper, which studies the factors affecting the incendivity of explosives when fired into methane, air, and/or coal-dust mixtures. Three drill-blast cycles of 3.1 m advance achieved in one working shift of 7.5 hours at the Holsfjorden Tunnel project in Norway. The tunnel, 5235 m long, with a cross section of 8.6 m2, was completed several months ahead of schedule. This remarkable performance was achieved by a crew of 16 men, using machines specially designed for small tunnel excavation. The integration of drilling and charging into one unit, mucking and transport in another, reduced non-productive time considerably. The average cycle time of 140 min made it possible to complete three rounds in one 7.5 hours shift.

This paper is concerned with possible transport mechanisms which occur during segregated burning (i.e., burning in an oil reservoir in which the oil-bearing formation is overlain by a "clean" porous zone containing only gas). ,Two analytical models are presented. In the first, burning is assumed to occur at the gas-oil interface, and the dominant mechanism is taken to be the rate at which oxygen diffuses to the interface. The second model assumes that combustion occurs within the clean zone, with the dominant mechanism being the mechanism of fuel deposition from the oil-bearing formation to the clean zone. ,Comparison of the results of the analyses with limited experimental data indicates that the latter mechanism is much more plausible. Both models are idealized representations of the actual process and are somewhat conjectural, however, owing to the lack of more definitive laboratory or field data. INTRODUCTION In recent years there has been considerable theoretical and experimental research directed toward understanding the recovery of crude oil by underground combustion. Although two different recovery schemes have been proposed, known as forward and reverse combustion, it is only forward combustion that shows promise of becoming a practical recovery technique.17 Most of the analyses of the forward combustion process have considered it to be pistonlike; i.e., oil is displaced by a vertical combustion zone which, with its ensuing gases, pushes die oil forward as the flame front is propagated through the reservoir.l-8,ll,l2,14-16 However, information gained in field pilot studies indicates that, at least to a certain extent, forward combustion proceeds in a segregated manner in oil reservoirs.10 An ideal segregated system is one in which the oil-bearing formation is overlain by a "clean" porous zone containing only gas. The location of the combustion zone in such a system is not immediately evident, although combustion is believed to occur either at the gas-oil interface or within the clean zone. In either case, the combustion zone may be horizontal and it moves in parallel rather than in series with the produced oil. The purpose of this paper is to explore the likely mechanisms by which segregated burning can occur, and to determine the sensitivity of the resulting models to changes in various physical parameters. Two governing mechanisms are considered: the case of a horizontal combustion zone at the gas-oil interface with the rate of combustion governed by the rate at which oxygen diffuses to the interface, and the case of combustion within the clean zone with the combustion process controlled by the transport of fuel from the oil-bearing formation to the clean zone. Both models are somewhat hypothetical and involve considerable simplification of the actual process. However, the results allow some preliminary understanding of segregated burning which is useful in the absence of more definitive laboratory or field pilot data.

It is customary for your new President, on these occasions, to make some observation on matters of general interest from the engineer's standpoint. The profession of engineering in the United States comprises not alone scientific advisers on industry but, in great majority, is comprised of the men in administrative positions. In such positions, they stand midway between capital and labor. The character of your training and experience leads you to exact and quantitative thought. This basis of training in a great group of Americans furnished a wonderful' recruiting ground for service in these last years of tribulation. Many thousands of engineers were called into the army, the navy, and civilian service for the Government. Thousands of high offices were discharged by them with credit to the profession and the nation. We have in. this country, probably, one hundred thousand professional engineers. The events of the past few years have greatly stirred their interest in national problems.' This has taken practical. form in the maintenance of joint committees for discussion of these problems and support to a free advisory bureau in ,Washington. The engineers want nothing for themselves from Congress.. They want efficiency in government, and you contribute to the maintenance of this bureau out of sheer idealism. This organization for consideration of national problems has had many subjects before it, and I propose to touch on some of them this evening.

A laboratory method for examining crude shale oil is described. The method uses only about 500 ml. of sample and a limited number of analytical determinations. Results provide information on the general characteristics and composition of an oil and serve as a basis for comparing different oils. However, the method does not provide for direct estimates of yields of commercial products. Analyses of 10 oils produced in the United States by different methods of retorting and of 10 shale oils from commercial-scale operations in 6 foreign countries are given. The shale-oil-analysis method presented in this paper is based on and employs the same equipment as the Bureau of Mines routine method for analyzing crude petroleum. As shale oil contains groups of compounds not generally found in petroleum, several modifications of the petroleum method that might increase its suitability for application to shale oil were investigated. The modifications included in the present method take into account the apparent poor heat stability of shale oil and the presence of large quantities of olefins and nitrogen compounds.

Numerous studies conducted in the 1960's and 1970's concluded or implied (1) that a high accident rate in terms of severity and frequency exists among new (first year) operators of mine machinery equipment, and (2) that lack of experience and training is a major cause of this high accident rate. Further studies refined this premise to show that the major causes of accidents among first year operators are: (1) lack of manipulative skills; (2) failure to follow/adhere to routine procedures; and (3) failure to recognize and respond properly to hazards. This report describes the design, development, and manufacture of a shuttle car operator training system, including a program of instruction which: ? Is economically feasible. ? Addresses accident data and specific causes of accidents. ? Includes an aerospace quality simulator of sufficient fidelity to teach and develop manipulative skills, recognition of and response to hazards, and routine and emergency procedures. ? Is designed to significantly reduce the severity and frequency of accidents especially during the operator's first year. ? Is designed to significantly improve the performance of the trainee as compared to the standard learning curve. Development of the simulator produced several valuable by-products including a major state-of-the-art technological advance in visual systems for simulators, and a first-time application of (certain) advanced filming techniques to underground filming.

Control of ground water for construction purposes is an everyday occurrence in the U.S. Thousands of pumps are in service at any given time. Most of these applications simply consist of pumping water out of an excavation, generally with the aid of sumps. Modern hydraulic and electric submersible pumps permit these procedures because of their ability to pump solids and take air without losing their prime. These procedures work fine up to a point and permit the contractor to control his ground water problems adequately and at minimal cost. When that point is exceeded, the ground water problems sometimes are compounded. Over-application of open pumping techniques can result in slope failures, cofferdam instability, bottom heaving, boils, loss of ground, damage to adjacent structures and utilities, and assorted other maladys which could and should be avoided. This paper will deal with the options involved in ground water control, a discussion of the unwanted side effects of dewatering, and examples of ground water control projects in various cities around the U.S.

Professional sport venue construction follows a very simple rule. Once the decision has been made to move the team to a new place, construction shall begin immediately, so that not more than one or two seasons pass by stuck in the old home. Such tight construction schedules require a different approach than traditional design-bid-build contracts. Design is mostly done on the fly, the construction schedule becomes a main risk factor and an early contractor involvement is desired. As specialty contractors become more and more sophisticated, owners, their construction managers or the general contractor have realized the value of ideas and modern technology they can bring to the table for a successful and fast project completion. Local knowledge and experience in a variety of solutions play a key role in the specialty contractor’s ability to provide added value to the project. This is also true for the specialty foundation contractor, who needs to understand the complexity of such modern structures from its integrate foundation, over the delicate concrete structure to a potentially fancy movable stadium roof. Not to mention all the modern high tech equipment which shall make such a place a great customer experience. His expertise shall enable him to propose the most suitable foundation element for the given ground condition and application. Rather to build what others have designed, his strength is to propose alternate concepts which will be faster and (hopefully) more cost effective. This paper highlights different value engineering (VE) input a specialty foundation contractor had on 3 major sports arena projects in California. Together with the entire team from owner to GC, including the Geotechnical (GEOR) and the Structural Engineer of Record (SEOR), the most efficient and best performing foundation solution can be found every time. But such an approach also requires the open mind of the owner to entertain last minute changes when the permit drawing set has already been submitted for approval.

This is what I term ... the graveyard end of any Conference. It's almost over. Those of you remaining are either all talked out or past the information overload stage. And some of the sensible? ones have left for more exciting field trips, or gone back to their work-site where they earn their daily crust, or headed off South to another Conference of interest to the Energy sector that is being held currently in Christchurch. But that's OK. I have a thick skin! And neither am I particularly Politically Correct! I am not a miner: I am not involved in the mining industry in a hands on way at all. I am not even an academic. I am not even too sure why I am here ... apart from the fact that I agreed to come! At various times in my life I have been a D istrict Councillor, Chairman of a Regional Council and even an MP. I am a supporter of responsible mining.  All of what I have to say is my own point of view rather than that of either the Coal Producers' Federation or the mining industry. That is not to say that we are often in agreement, but I thought I would clear that point right at the outset. And some of what I will talk about will not strictly be to the topic - it's hardly mind-bending riveting stuff. Well, is it? But obviously because you are still here you have some interest in the topic.

This publication is an economic evaluation of the Bureau of Mines electrolytic process for recovering lead from scrap lead-acid batteries. In this process, scrap batteries are crushed and separated into metal and sludge fractions. The metal fraction is cast as anodes and electro- refined. Lead in the sludge fraction is converted to lead carbonate by reaction with an ammonium carbonate-ammonium bisulfite solution. The lead carbonate is then dissolved in a fluosilicic acid electrolyte from which pure lead metal is electrowon. A cost estimate is presented for a plant capable of processing 10,000 scrap batteries per day. The fixed capital cost for this plant is estimated to he $14 million on a fourth quarter 1984 basis. Operating costs are estimated to be $0.15/lb Pb recovered. Assuming a lead selling price of $0.17/lb, the interest rate of return on investment after taxes is 11 pct. A lead selling price of about $0.21/lb is needed to obtain a 20-pct-interest rate of return.

Mention of any company or product does not constitute endorsement by NIOSH. ABSTRACT Proximity detection systems (PDSs) for mobile machines have the potential to decrease injuries and fatalities. Early adopters of the technology have identified some challenges, which presents an opportunity to explore and improve the integration of mobile PDSs in underground coal mines. The current study applied the task-technology fit framework to investigate the fit between mobile PDS technology and mining relative to health and safety, from the perspective of leaders at two coal mines. Quantitative results from the study show that mine leaders evaluated mobile PDS favorably for training and ease of use, system feedback, user authorization and experience, and less favorably for safety, compatibility, task completion, and reliability. Qualitative results reveal specific task, mine, and system characteristics that may have influenced leaders' evaluations. The study includes considerations for safe technology integration. INTRODUCTION Striking, pinning, and crushing accidents related to mobile machines continue to be a major concern in underground coal mining. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) linked 22 of the 75 underground mine fatalities reported between 2011 and 2015 to power haulage [1]. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) asserts that proximity detection systems for mobile machines (mobile PDSs) could help to prevent these types of fatal injuries [2]. Mobile PDSs use a collision avoidance technology that allows the mine to establish hazard zones and employ electromagnetic sensors to detect workers equipped with a miner-wearable component (MWC) working near these mining machines. The authors characterize a mobile PDS as an automated technology, because—in line with Lee & See’s [3] definition of automation—a mobile PDS actively “selects data, transforms information, makes decisions, or controls processes” (p. 50). When the system detects workers in the established hazard zones, it issues alerts and slows or stops the mobile machine. Even though a mobile PDS may be a viable and promising safety solution, there are still a number of questions regarding how well this automated technology will fit with mining tasks and conditions. Using a mixed-methods approach, the current study explored factors that influence the fit of mobile PDSs in the underground mining environment.
