The Liberty Bridge in Greenville, South Carolina is a curved, cable-stayed, pedestrian bridge with primary support provided by two towers. The bridge is part of the Falls Park redevelopment. The bridge was originally designed to be supported on drilled piers. Alternately, the bridge was supported on a combination of micropiles and anchor piles because of difficult access and subsurface conditions. The use of micropiles and anchor piles led to improved construction scheduling and reduced costs. Micropiles were used to resist compressive loads. Anchor piles were used to resist tensile forces and to eliminate excessive settlement of pile caps into underlying fill during pre-stressing. This paper describes the site history, bridge construction, site and subsurface conditions encountered, and the decisions that led to support of the bridge using micropiles and anchor piles and foundation construction.

This evaluation of the sulfurous acid process for the production of metallurgical-grade alumina is the first of a series concerning various known methods of extracting alumina from low-grade aluminous materials and was undertaken to permit comparison with other processes. In the process with which this Bureau of Mines report is concerned, calcined clay is leached under pressure with 20 percent sulfurous acid and then filtered to remove a siliceous residue. The aluminum sulfite remaining in the filtrate is precipitated as a monobasic sulfite which, together with iron sulfite, is then decomposed under pressure to form a crude alumina hydrate and iron oxide. This intermediate product is purified in a modified Bayer process to yield alumina suitable for electrolytic reduction to aluminum. A study estimate (16)3 is used for these evaluations. The capital cost, not including land, is estimated at $95,701,600 on a Marshall and Stevens index basis of 240.0 for a plant producing 1,000 tons a day of alumina or 350,000 tons a year. The annual operating cost for this size plant is estimated at $22,831,100 or $65.23 per ton of alumina using clay at $1 per ton. Depreciation and local taxes are included in the estimate, but profit and Federal taxes are not considered.

The Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, has established a testing adit on the Government reservation at Mount Weather, Virginia, to facility to research on the fundamental tats of mining under actual metal-mining conditions. A number of sites in several Eastern States were investigated, out Mount Weather was selected because the rock seemed best suited for rock drilling and other mining tests and because the ground was already owned by the Federal Government, the site having been acquired in 1902 for use of the Weather Bureau. The testing edit has an advantage over en active metal mine for certain investigations because variable conditions affecting any particular research problem can be controlled and maintained in a fixed status, whereas in an operating mine this seldom is feasible. Operations were begin September 1935, with a crew of four laborers under a resident engineer. The laborers were recruited from, nearby farms, and. although they had no previous mining experience, they have developed into satisfactory miners.

A sand and gravel deposit exists in the Wildrose Canyon Wilderness Study Area (WSA), Out it is limited to local use because of the distance from major markets and resulting high transportation costs. The WSA has no identified metallic minerals, oil, gas or other energy related deposits. INTRODUCTION The WSA encompasses 17,366 acres (7,028 ha) in the Panamint Range, Inyo County, California. Access to the area is by State Route 190, approximately 45 miles (72.4 km) east of Lone Pine, California and 16 miles (26 km) southwest of Stovepipe Wells, California (fig. 1).

A whole-mine experiment to assess the practical feasibility and utility of the dedicated-wire technique for overcoming poor trolley carrier phone system performance at a large underground coal mine was designed, performed, and evaluated. The technique involves the use of a single, low-loss, properly terminated and branched auxiliary wire placed in the rail haulageway. This auxiliary dedicated wire allows signals to electromagnetically couple to the trolley wire/rail transmission line, and thereby significantly decrease the overall signal attenuation rate on the trolley wire/rail line. The in-mine dedicated-wire demonstration program and its results, conclusions, and recommendations are described. The dedicated-wire technique is shown to be a valid and practical one for significantly improving carrier phone system performance in coal mines.

In this report, recommendations are made for programs to develop workable techniques to stop or prevent acid mine drainage formation in those underground coal mines where acid production could take place. These recommendations include development of mine closure technology, development of surface water infiltration control procedures, study of the effect of roof collapse on mine water characteristics, evaluation of the long-term effects of flooding underground mines above drainage, investigation of the effectiveness of section sealing in active mines, development of a simple model for predicting mine water quality and quantity, preparation of a manual on mine drainage abatement procedures, and development of a program to disseminate information on mine drainage abatement to the coal industry. These recommendations are based on an in-depth evaluation of information acquired over years of research on acid mine drainage formation, on numerous laboratory and field studies of methods of preventing or minimizing acid mine drainage formation, and on review of the geological, hydrological, and mineralogical factors involved. For many years, much thought and effort have been devoted to the achievement of safety in the use of explosives by those interested in the preservation of human life and the protection of property. As a result, we now have adequate rules pertaining to the safe use of explosives , which, if observed, would prevent many, perhaps ail , of the explosives accidents that yet occur . Although the rules respecting the use of explosives are believed to be well - known, many accidents occur because they are disregarded . The mental awareness aroused by a tragic accident usually will cause safety precautions to be taken for a while ; however , this awareness gradually disappears unless a sincere effort is made permanently to prevent similar accidents . Frequently, because safe methods are more irksome than unsafe methods , the lessons taught by accident experience are forgotten in a short time , vigilance is relaxed , and there is a gradual return to unsafe , easy methods of performing work. If the preservation of human life is important , the unfortunate experiences of others and the lessons taught by them should be applied to reduce unnecessary loss of life . The value of a life lost as the resuit of accident should be calculated not only from the monetary and humanitarian standpoint but also according to what the accident could contribute in the way of saving other lives and suffering . This saving of other lives can and will , if the lessons from unfortunate accidents are applied , convert a loss to a gain a gain of such magnitude that the accident victim could be considered

Nine high-volatile bituminous Utah coals were carbonized singly and in blends with low-and medium-volatile bituminous coals. Of the 9 coals, 2 are in commercial use as the base coals in blends that produce industrially accept-able metallurgical coke, while 7 are regarded as weakly coking and are not used commercially in coking blends. The carbonization tests were made in a la-inch diameter, cylindrical retort, using 50-pound charges. Sunnyside coal blended with autogenous char generally produced larger and stronger coke than was yielded by straight Sunnyside coal. The volatile matter of the char and the concentration of the char in the blend appear to be important parameters influencing coke size and strength. A blend of 10 per-cent autogenous char of 7.2-percent volatile matter with Sunnyside coal yielded coke that was larger, stronger, and of higher apparent specific gravity than coke produced from an industrial coke oven blend consisting of 15 percent medium-volatile coal and 85 percent Sunnyside coal.

The Bureau of Mines has conducted a survey to determine potential exposure of mine workers to dust produced in connection with intermittent rock drilling in coal mines. Eighteen mines in 3 states were visited, and 30 different operations were observed, as follows: 10 drilling in draw slate, 8 drilling top rock for brushing or grading, 2 drilling in the coal face, 4 drilling in the bottom, 2 drilling top rock for overcasts, 2 drilling in faults or boulders, 1 drilling for roof bolting, and 1 drilling for trolley hangers. Dust respirators were worn by drilling crews during 16 of the 30 operations. Three hundred thirty-two samples of air-borne dust were collected during the survey. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The information in this report is based on samples collected and observations made in bituminous-coal mines. Operating officials at these mines have contributed to this study, and their cooperation is gratefully acknowledged. All samples were counted by Thomas B. Kirby, chemist, and Dominick A. "Mineralogical techniques including microscopic methods, reflected and transmitted light microscopy, Cathodoluminescence (CL) and Scanning Electron Microscopy equipped with an Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (SEM-EDS), are useful in determining the quality of industrial minerals. They are essential for studying ores and metallurgical products including the evaluation of physical characteristics of the mineral, paragenetic relationships, associations with possible deleterious contaminants (e.g., sulphides), spatial distribution within the ore zones and liberation characteristics. The methods are inexpensive, and provide quick identification and distinction among the industrial minerals and the gangue minerals in a section. Additionally, SEM is necessary to reveal complex textural sequences and 3-D measurements of minerals and quick semi-quantitative analysis.Common analytical methods include Electron Microprobe Analyses (EMPA) and Whole Rock Analysis (WRA) (commonly with XRF and ICP) for major and trace elements. The EMPA analyses of industrial minerals provide information on the purity of the analyzed grains as opposed to the bulk chemical analyses that may be misleading due to contamination by other associated common “gangue” minerals. These techniques have been implemented for the case studies of wollastonite, V-magnetite and muscovite. Therefore, these methods can provide extremely useful information and lead to the implementation of a successful pilot-testing programme.MINERALOGICAL EVALUATION OF DEPOSITSDespite their considerable and increasing economic importance, industrial mineral deposits have traditionally been neglected by economic geologists, and are only rarely the subject of the detailed analysis widely lavished on metallic mineralization. Moreover, in that they generally represent concentrations of “normal” rock-forming minerals, albeit commonly with particular textural and/or geochemical features, they have tended to fall between the mainstream of petrogenetic studies and mineral deposit research (Grammatikopoulos 1999). For many industrial minerals, little attention has been paid to the factors responsible for their local concentration as large and high-grade bodies. This comparative neglect has particularly been the case for minerals such as talc and wollastonite, widespread in metamorphic rocks, in which they are reasonably interpreted as components of assemblages derived, respectively, from pelitic sediments, ultramafic igneous rocks and siliceous limestones."

This report presents experimental data on crater formation in four rock types. From an analysis of these data a general theory of rock breakage by explosives is deduced. This theory accounts for most of the rock breakage and other phenomena that occur when a concentrated charge is detonated in a drill hole near a free surface. From instrumented crater tests and high-speed motion pictures of the explosions, various experimental checks on the deduced theory of rock breakage are made. The general mechanism of rock breakage by explosives as described in this report is outlined briefly below. The detonation of the explosive charge creates a high gas pressure in the charge hole, which in turn generates a compressive strain pulse in the surrounding rock. This compressive strain pulse travels outward in all directions from the charge hole. Near the charge hole the amplitude of this strain pulse is sufficient to cause crushing of the rock. However, as the strain pulse travels outward its amplitude decays rapidly until no further crushing of the rock is possible. The compressive strain pulse continues to travel outward until it is reflected by a free surface. Upon reflection the compressive strain pulse becomes a tensile strain pulse. As the strength of rock in tension is much less than in compression, the reflected tensile strain pulse is able to break the rock in tension, progressing from the free surface back toward the shot point. In other words, the rock is pulled apart, not pushed apart.

This investigation by the Bureau of Mines was undertaken to develop information on the extractive metallurgy of thorite ores because potential ore bodies of this mineral have been found recently in Colorado, Idaho, and Montana. Basic information on thorite ore treatment that would be useful in appraising the potential of these and other domestic thorium resources was developed. The work was done mainly on thorite ore containing 3.87 percent ThO2 from the Powderhorn district, Colo., and on a composite sample containing 0.52 percent ThO2 from the Wet Mountains district, Colo. Limited tests of d corroborative nature subsequently were made on a sample containing 2.30 percent ThO2 from the Lemhi Pass area on the Idaho-Montana border.

The field data gathered as part of the measurements described in Volumes I and II were re-analyzed in the low frequency regime (.1 Hz to 1 Hz) where motion sickness normally occurs. These data were compared co the international standard ?ISO 2631 Addendum 2: Evaluation of exposure to whole body z-axis vertical vibration in the frequency range 0.1 to 1.0 Hz." For both underground mining machines and surface mining machines the results showed that one would not expect motion sickness to .be a severe problem. New field data were gathered on the vibration reduction performance of various seat designs found on surface coal mining machines. The vibration during normal operation was measured on the seat using the standard seat pad accelerometer package described in the previous two volumes and simultaneously on the floor of the machine at the base of the seat. Preliminary indications are that the so-called high performance seats used for operator vibration reduction do not offer significant improvement over conventional seats.

On November 15, 1972, the Bautsch mine, a lead-zinc mine in Paleozoic dolomites, experienced a massive rock failure involving 3 to 5 million tons. Because this failure was large and extended to the surface, it was included in the Federal Bureau of Mines investigations on "Massive Rock Failures." Analysis of the rock mechanics and mode of failure revealed that failure at the Bautsch mine was the result of the interrelationship of many factors. Factors related to the failure were found to be external and internal to the mining environment. Unlike internal factors, external factors were not apparent and, therefore, many external factors were investigated; some of which are not normally considered in rock mechanics analyses. External and internal factors determined to be of significant importance were: (1) precipitation, (2) fractures, (3) plastic clay layer, (4) topography, (5) rock alteration, (6) bedding, and (7) mining zone dimensions. Because of the conditions at the mine, failure could have been predicted without extensive instrumentation. Application of basic geologic and engineering principles to the internal and external factors could have predicted failure. Alternately, failure would, in all probability, have been delayed by years if, after 1962, mining had been curtailed in the area of failure.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is used increasingly as a tool to provide quantitative metrics of environmental impact and inform early stage materials selection decisions. One common challenge in LCA stems from allocation of burden when multiple adjacent products share some of the same processes. A critical example of this is the partitioning of benefit or burden at product disposition in open-loop recycling scenarios. This work reviews the challenge of allocation and investigates the various methods proposed for allocating end-of-life (EOL) burden. Specifically this work examines whether these methods lead to different results and explores the trends in allocation method bias for or against particular materials classes.

This study reviews the sulfur and suliuric acid industries in Eastern United States with emphasis on patterns of consumption and marketing. Output of sulfur in the East is relatively small, and most of the area's sulfur requirements are met by gulf coast Frasch sulfur. Over the long ten recovered elemental sulfur from sour natural gas and petroleum may become the East's major source of sulfur. In 1958 sulfuric acid manufacture consumed over 80 percent of the area's sulfur requirements. The leading uses for sulfuric acid were the manufacture of superphosphates and chemicals. Over the years, unit requirements for sulfur and acid in many major markets have been reduced through improved technology, but new markets always have been developed to keep the industry vital and growing.

The “China & East Asia Mineral and Energy Re-sources Symposium — CEAR 2000” was held Jan. 23-26, 2000 in Denver, CO. Conference sponsors included Resources and Technology Symposia of Colorado and the Asian Journal of Mining. The meeting was attended by representatives from China, Japan, Mongolia, Korea, eastern Russia (Siberia) and the United States. The US attendees consisted of interested parties from mining and energy companies, financial institutions, consultants and government agencies. In his opening statements, L. Maness, Jr., president of Resources and Technology Symposia of Colorado, said that the “goal of the conference was to make jobs and friendships and to introduce people to each other.” The conference provided an opportunity for Western mining interests, including mining companies and investors, to meet with government agencies from both sides of the Pacific.
