The coal-bearing rocks in Iowa occur in an arcuate belt across the central and southern parts of the State (fig. 1) at the northern end of the Western Interior coal field. Coal beds of minable thickness are sporadic throughout this area and are mined principally in the three districts indicated by dark shading on the index map, although coal occurs also in the areas indicated by light shading. The coal is mostly of high-volatile C bituminous rank in all parts of the State. SURFACE FEATURES The coal-bearing rocks in Iowa are concealed for the most part by a covering of glacial drift ranging in thickness from a few feet to several hundred feet. This covering has been dissected to form a gently rolling upland, rising from an elevation of 466 feet at the mouth of the Des Moines River to about 1,200 feet in Calhoun County in the central part of the State. The local relief, however, rarely exceeds 150 to 200 feet.

"The Key Lake uranium mill is located in Northern Saskatchewan. It treats a high grade, complex uranium and metal sulphide ore. The plant and process are in many respects unique, because commercial treatment of this type of uranium ore had never been done before. The process and engineering design was based on extensive laboratory test results. A pilot plant testing stage was omitted because of confidence in the test results and time constraints to bring the plant into production.The bench scale testwork on exploration drill core samples along with preparation of the feasibility study and environmental impact statement were carried out between 1976 and 1979. The contract for detailed engineering was awarded to Wright Engineers of Vancouver in late 1980 and in August of 1981 following a public inquiry, approval to proceed with construction was granted.Construction began immediately, and during the winter the foundations for many of the plant buildings were poured and by the beginning of the following winter the buildings had been erected and installation of equipment began. Despite a six month construction worker strike in 1982, the crushing plant started up in June of 1983 and ore processing commenced in October of that year, approximately 3 months behind the original schedule.This paper describes the mill design and compares the expected performance, with the operating experience. Emphasis is directed towards flowsheet and equipment changes made since start-up, operational difficulties encountered and further improvements envisaged. Auxiliary systems are only discussed where they directly affect mill operation."

A medição online de umidade de finos de minério de ferro sempre foi uma informação muito desejada nas plantas de pelotização de minério de ferro. Controlar a umidade do pellet feed produzido pela unidade de filtragem além de possibilitar maximizar a produção deste setor da planta garante uma maior estabilidade no processo de pelotamento e de endurecimento. Para conseguir entregar esta medição à sala de controle, iniciamos um projeto utilizando a metodologia Design For Six Sigma para desenvolver uma forma de medição desta grandeza. Inicialmente foi feita uma revisão bibliográfica sobre o assunto. Posteriormente, foram realizadas visitas técnicas que eliminaram algumas possíveis tecnologias de medição. Finalmente, foram avaliadas as tecnologias de Absorção de RF e medição por um braço robótico para serem avaliadas. O primeiro teste industrial foi realizado com um medidor de absorção de RF que não apresentou bons resultados. A faixa de interesse de medição é muito estreita (9% a 11% de umidade). Esse fato exige uma boa precisão do equipamento para que a medida tomada do processo seja útil e sua incerteza não ocupe toda a faixa. Como nenhuma das tecnologias de medição online existentes no mercado se mostrou precisa suficiente para a aplicação, a alternativa foi utilizar um braço robótico para coletar, secar e medir a umidade através do método tradicional feito por um robô. Esta última alternativa se mostrou robusta e adequada ao controle de processo da unidade de filtragem, produzindo resultados confiáveis e precisos.

"The present contribution is complementary with a preceding one on the field association of the conform-able ""pyritic"" deposits. It considers the more important features of their mineralogical constitution and their microtextures, re-examines the present interpretations of these, and of-fer-some alternative explanations. The term ""pyritic"" for these de-posits is m many cases a misnomer, as two quite distinct ore types are inuolve. One is a banded pyritic sphalerite-galena-chalcopyrite ore (for which the term '•pyritic"" is in-deed quite suitable), while the other is non-banded and is composed essentially of pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite. In addition to these constitutional differences, each is distinctive in general appearance and texture. The occurrence of two such consistent but clearly distinguishable ore types is attributed -rather than to difference in source material and pressure-temperature conditions of deposition -to the contribution of similar source material to dissimilarly oxygenated environments of sedimentation. Textures in the banded ores generally thought to be indicative of replacement or of high-temperature exsolution are explained by slow, law-temperature segregation in situ during compaction, folding, and regional metamorphism."

From site demolition, to design, to construction, Detroit's new Tiger Stadium project is required to be completed within a short 2 ½ years from award of the design-build contract. Such extreme schedule requirements together with somewhat difficult ground conditions at the site, resulted in several challenges in the design and construction of the deep foundation system for the stadium. During the geotechnical investigation, an intermittent water bearing sand layer was encountered overlying the hardpan at the site. As a result, some concern developed regarding the potential for collapse of caisson bells within this layer, as well as the potential for flooding of the caissons during drilling. Although sand and/or ground water was encountered within about half of the caissons, standard drilling and belling methods were used, and adverse conditions were controlled in almost all cases through expeditious drilling, inspection and concreting of the caissons. This paper will present a summary of the ground conditions, design and specification requirements, and construction methods used to successfully install the caissons for this project.

"IntroductionTHE DIE CASTING industry .as we know it today is the direct result of the invention and development of die casting machines during the nineteenth century and of reliable alloys in the twentieth. The early machines were designed to cast low melting point metals such as lead .and tin, and their alloys.It was inevitable that, as these die castings were put into service, the demand should arise for stronger materials. Zinc alloys, often containing lead, tin, copper, and aluminum as major constituents, were relatively easy to cast and stronger than the lead and tin alloys. However, it became apparent after a number of years that these zinc alloys tended to become brittle, distort, and corrode, particularly if kept in warm, humid atmospheres. Thus, considerable quantities of zinc-base .alloys were in use before the trouble was realized and effective measures could .be taken to determine the cause of the instability.The deleterious effect of certain metallic impurities on the properties of zinc •die casting .alloys has now been known for about thirty years. Brauer .and Peirce, and, later, other research workers of the New Jersey Zinc Company such as Anderson and Werley, discovered the pronouned effect of lead, cadmium, and tin on the stability of zinc-alloys."

Tin mineralization in both eastern and western Tasmania shows a spatial correlation with middle Palaeozoic biotite granites and adamellites. The range of composition of these granitic rocks is restricted with respect to Mg, K, and Na content. Because this compositional restriction is shown by granitic rocks from other tin provinces, the concept of a genetic relationship between these granites and the associated tin mineralization is reinforced, and similar concentration mechanisms may be involved.Gold mineralization is largely restricted to eastern Tasmania and in contrast to the tin mineralization is rarely spatially associated with the middle Palaeozoic granitic rocks, although most authors have suggested a genetic correlation with hornblende and/or biotite granodiorites.Although few analyses are available, the granodiorites that are spatially associated with gold deposits exhibit similarities to granitic rocks from gold provinces elsewhere. These features suggest a possible genetic relationship between gold mineralization and the granodiorites.The composition of granitic rocks may be used as an aid to exploration in delineating areas of potential tin and gold mineralization in granite terrains.

Eight interburden handling concepts are developed for multiple seam area mine stripping operations in central and western United States. They are based on data gathered and analyzed during field surveys, literature reviews and visits to state requlatory agencies in five states. It is concluded that improvement of reclamation practices through selective interburden handling techniques is possible at lower operating costs than currently incurred. Specific multiple seam mining systems are discussed in this report.

This volume is the fourth of a four-volume final report on research carried out under a contract from the U.S. Bureau of Mines on the development of a computer simulation model for surface mine reclamation planning. The other volumes are titled as follows: Volume I: Ore Reserve Estimation, Volume II: Dragline Model, and Volume III: Mine Coordinate Generator System. The Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator (OPMHS) was first developed" in 1971 and modified and updated in 1975. The present work is an update of the 1975 version and provides a direct link between the geology and reserves system and the various activities of the mining equipment in a mining system. Also, the modeling techniques in OPMHS/2 have incorporated a flexible method for describing various equipment (shovels, trucks, belts, trains, etc.), locations, their sequence of operations, place changes, and their interactions. These features allow for studying mining equipment selection, mining method analysis and reclamation planning. This report describes the Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator Version 2 (OPMHS/2). The report details the program features, operation, and application. Through an extensive set of appendices, the data input sequence, input variable definitions, sample data listing and program output are presented in detail.

From time to time lead, which is normally considered to be a soft ductile metal, fails by cracking. The cracks which form appear to be of two distinct types-(a) those which follow a zig-zag course around the boundaries of crystals and (b) those which follow a more direct path, frequently two systems of cracks appearing at right angles.The former appear definitely to be associated primarily with the properties of the crystal boundaries, whilst the latter appear rather to be determined by the system of stresses applied. In both cases the lead appears to be a brittle rather than a ductile metal, for the failure occurs without the large amount of deformation usually associated with the tensile breaking of lead. The latter is, however, a function of time and when lead is deformed by long applications of stress, the metal appears to- be less ductile than when the stress is applied suddenly. Thus, if a given test piece of commercial lead is broken by a stress of 1100 lb. per sq. in. in several hours, it may extend 40 to 50%before failing, whereas when broken by a stress of 500 lb. per sq. in. acting for 12 months or more it willshow an extension of only 15 to 25 %. With lower stresses still, failure would take much longer and undoubtedly lower extensions would be obtained.As the stress is lowered it is found that the marked local contraction characteristic of ductile metals becomes less noticeable, and failure, instead of being by extension of *Lecture delivered to the First 'Ordinary Meeting of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, 21st August, 1935.

The availability of mineral aggregates for construction purposes is rapidly declining through inadequate resource planning. restrictive zoning and legislation , and competing land uses. The Geological Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has undertaken to provide aggregate inventory reports for all townships designated under The Pits and Quarries Control Act, 1971, and eventually for all towns hips in heavily populated areas. The reports contain maps and recommendations for extractive zoning by municipalities; of necessity only the largest deposits are given priority recommendations. It is intended that these reports should improve the resource planning in areas underlain by large aggregate deposits. The inventory is only possible because a concentrated effort has been made to map the Quaternary geology of populated areas over the last ten years. Future needs require that we develop methods to determine the extent of poorly defined and buried aggregates and that we look for natural alternatives.

This report describes the results of a survey of current blast area guarding procedures at surface and underground metal/nonmetal mines. It features five case histories (two surface and three underground mines) of blast guarding methods considered to represent the best systems in use in the U.S. Mining Industry. Elements of an effective blast guarding system are presented along with recommendations for improvements in current blast guarding practices. Industrial and military surveillance and detection technology was reviewed to determine if parallel technology exists for immediate application to blasting site security. While it is concluded that immediate transfer of industrial security technology will be limited, a number of recommendations are advanced for new research to adapt some of that technology for application to the mining environment. Two research areas considered to offer the most potential for improved blast guarding are presented. They are, computerized personnel tracking and blast area intrusion detection using infrared, microwave or E-field type detection systems.

While investigating methods for determining the best temperatures for hot-working experimental stainless steels, the Bureau of Mines Albany Metallurgy Research Center developed a machine in which hot-twist tests could be made in a few minutes. This machine is similar to some used previously except that specimens are heated by induction instead of by radiation, and their temperature is measured by a calibrated radiation-detection unit instead of by a thermocouple. In. developing the technique for using the new machine, tests were made on specimens of medium-carbon steel, mild steel, and AISI (American Iron and Steel Institute) type 304 stainless steel. Tests also were made on as-cast specimens and preworked specimens of experimental AISI type 202, low austenitic stainless steel, and as-cast specimens of AISI type 301 experimental stainless steel. The optimum hot-working temperatures were determined for all types of steel tested. Also, data were gathered on the effects of test speed and temperature on torsional strength and the effect of twisting on tensile stress in the specimen.

"There has been considerable output over the last three decades from the social sciences concerning man and his working environment. In the mining industry at large, however, authoritarian, hierarchical control systems remain the norm, and it can be argued that something less than optimum effectiveness in terms of both productivity and worker satisfaction has resulted.Recently (/975), Campbell Chibougamau Mines Ltd. devised a most interesting organization and incentive system that links the underground production of a standard ton of mined output at controlled grade to an incentive payment scheme. A parallel scheme in the mill complex is based on maximizing recovery of copper and gold from available feed. A key part of both minsystems is the formation of groups who have considerable autonomy, particularly when compared to the still prevalent traditional mining industry relationships between the worker and supervisory levels.This paper traces the development of Campbell Chibougamau's system . Attention is drawn to qualitative and quantitative measures of the success of the method through the commentary of those miners involved in the scheme, and by reference to the favourable records on productivity, absenteeism, safety, turnover and grievance activity.IntroductionPyramidal or hierarchical management control systems, coupled to piece-work incentive schemes, predominate throughout Canada's underground mining industry. Although specific details of such systems vary from site to site, they , are generally understood and accepted as fact by the majority of the work force.Normally, a front-line supervisor (shift boss) directs a number of workmen and assigns them to tasks and working locations commensurate with their abilities, knowledge, training and skills. This front -line supervisor may direct or supervise from as few as 12 to as many as 75 or more workmen. He issues orders according to his assigned production objectives and ensures that these directions are fulfilled in accordance with standard mine practice . Several shift bosses are usually directed by a mine foreman or mine captain. The mine captains report to a general foreman or directly to the mine superintendent or his assistant, depending on the size and scope of the operation."

Production mine geology must be accurate and efficient in order to reduce risk and ensure that ore value and mining operation revenue are maximised. Present grade control practices are commonly based on outmoded and inaccurate 2D geological mapping techniques where spatial relationships are estimated by eye, sketched by hand and projected to arbitrary reference planes. The 3D mapping approach outlined in this paper integrates 3D photogrammetric imagery with implicit modelling techniques to enable more accurate grade control and reconciliation in underground mines. High-resolution stereo photographs are taken of daily ore development headings. Ore contacts are traced directly on a 2D face photo using a stylus and rugged tablet. Area-weighted face grades are estimated and calculated on mapped 2D face planes. In the office, a 3D photorealistic mesh is processed and georeferenced. 2D face mapping data is transformed into its actual 3D location and true 3D mine mapping is performed by digitising oriented 3D polylines representing ore contacts and other geological features directly onto the image surface. Three-dimensional spatial relationships are fixed, eliminating the projection error of traditional 2D methods. Ore envelope and waste solids are modelled within the closed, drift-round mesh. Volume-weighted ore envelope and round grades, as well as round volume and tonnage, are calculated. Ore/waste classifications, grade, tonnage and per cent dilution are quantified per round, visually assessed in 3D and reconciled with short- and long-term models on a daily basis. Updated geological continuity models provide geological guidance in development headings under geological control and accurate 3D structural and form-line mapping improves definition drilling and stope planning. Three-dimensional imagery provides a permanent detailed survey and geological record of mine workings that can be revisited virtually to reinterpret geological ore controls in light of new observations and insights. In addition images can be used to monitor daily production performance, create training scenarios for miners, engineers and geologists and prepare management presentations. This approach adds value to underground mines by improving the accuracy and efficiency of mine geology practices. This report presents observations made by Bureau engineers regarding hydraulic-powered roof supports that are currently being used or have been used on nearly all operating longwalls in the United States, A comparative summary of specifications for various types of powered supports with a brief description of the mine conditions has been compiled to enable mining engineers and mine operators to readily evaluate the differences in design data. Some of the support data furnished in the field may vary from those listed in manufacturers' brochures because of the trend to customize various support components to meet specific mine conditions. A method of estimating support requirements for different assumed operating conditions is presented. Similar computations for specific mine conditions may be used to make preliminary estimates of support requirements.

The mineralogical composition and morphology of solidified copper smelting and converting slags are of some interest from slag cleaning (by froth flotation), impurity elimination, and environmental points of view. Properties result from both the state of molten slag before solidification and processes taking place during solidification and cooling. In solidification and cooling, copper and sulfur dissolved in molten slag are .precipitating substantially from the silicate phase. Even in water quenching of slag, dissolved copper is pushed out of the solution in the form of finely divided precipitate. Elements present in the raw materials are distributed in a distinct manner between the solidified slag and non-silicate solidification products. Arsenic, antimony, and tin are strongly accumulated in copper precipitate, but not the other metallic constituents common in copper concentrates. Smelting and converting slags differ remarkably on their mineralogical composition and morphology although resulting principally of same chemical processes. Converter slags are more inhomogenous; they often contain solid particles and copper content is .as a rule higher than in matte smelting slags. The final copper content of converter slags was observed to be in a distinct manner dependent on iron oxide - silica ratio. Slag forming, solidification, and precipitation phenomena are discussed on the basis of mineralogical and morphology analysis of smelter slags and laboratory scale experiments.

Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) project C25073 was proposed by industry stakeholders seeking a potential solution that improves underground air quality and reduces operational costs associated with technology used to control diesel particulate emissions in the underground coal mining environment.The need to protect workers from diesel particulate matter (DPM) has lead the underground coal mining industry to install disposable filter systems on their vehicles. While the disposable filters are efficient at removing significant amounts of DPM, the following major issues have arisen:- high cost of operations; disposable filters cost $A250–300 each and need to be changed at least once per shift resulting in an estimated cost of up to $A164 M/a, in filters alone, to the NSW underground coal mining industry- improper installation, damaged seals and lack of installing a new filter when the old filter is removed; workers are still being exposed to excessive amounts of DPM.The ACARP project successfully demonstrated significant DPM emissions reduction comparable to the incumbent disposable technology on a proof-of-concept wall-flow diesel particulate filter (DPF) system, as well as satisfactory system robustness when assessed using an industry representative test cycle representing operations of a load haul dump (LHD) vehicle typical of that used by the Australian underground coal industry. It was noted in testing that the technology increased modal NO2 formation, but was compliant over typical operational duty cycles.One of the key benefits with the use of a wall-flow DPF system is its tamper-proof design, mitigating the risk of operating unfiltered diesel plant in poorly ventilated areas. Elimination of the need for continual replacement of disposable filters provides significant operational savings estimated to be up to 80 per cent of the incumbent technology.In addition to the above, the project also delivered a number of significant contributions to the knowledgebase of the Australian and international coal industry with regard to the characterisation of operations and control of emissions.CITATION:Coplin, N, 2017. "This paper reports on an investigation into gas and dust concentrations in Ruttan Mine's exhaust air. The values obtained indicate that there is excellent potential to recirculate approximately 25% of the hot exhaust air into the intake air to reduce winter heating costs. Contaminant concentrations vary significantly during the course of the working shift and decrease in the mine exhaust system as the air returns to surface. A proposed on-line control system is outlined which would permit recirculation to be implemented with a pay-back period of less than two years. IntroductionIncreased energy costs and depressed mineral prices have resulted in mines, which use winter ventilation air heating, reviewing their systems to try to reduce costs. Heating costs can be significant, for example, Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan spends an average of $580,000 per mine per year and Ruttan mine spends approximately $IM per year on propane for its direct-fired heating system.Several method s of reducing heating costs have been considered and the following have potential application.Heat Exchange Between Exhaust andIntakeThis is usually accomplished by run-round glycol systems. The system is limited by ice formation on the coils in wet exhaust air and by the low exhaust air temperature, usually l0ºC. It also requires close proximity of the intake and exhaust airways to ma~e the cost of the connecting pipeline and pump systems economic . A feasibility study by Inco's Thompson operation reported that a proposed system of this type had a 19-year payback period and was, therefore, uneconomic. Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan is currently investigating plastic heat exchangers for a trial system because of corrosion on metal exchangers. It has the advantage of a 17°C exhaust temperature and relatively dry exhaust air.Waste Heat ReclamationThe waste heat from compressors and hoists can be used for heating in some mines. The feasibility of such a system depends on the individual layout and the proximity of the heat source to the inlet airway. Other mines have considered using the exhaust air in greenhouses to provide a cash crop."

Canister-type gas masks Pave become an essential part of the equipment of many industries, not only for use in .emergencies, but also in performing normal operations of industrial processes and procedures, particularly where ventilation is not practically or economically feasible. They are also used widely for enhancing safety of operations which previous to the development of gas masks had been performed in harmful atmospheres. Since the inception of industrial gas masks the Bureau of Mines has been actively engaged in endeavoring to increase the efficiency and safety of these devices, and this bureau bas become a source of advice to manufacturers in producing devices of good quality and to industry in the proper selection and use of these devices. In order to give first-hand information and keep current with the demands and needs of industry it is necessary to perform investigations from time to time. This report deals with tests of certain types of commercial gas-mask canisters for protection against mercury vapor.
