[THIS PAPER, tine of a series on placer ml n in iii Alaska, describes mining methods and gives unit costs at operations where hydraulic and mechanical excavation equipment is used with nonfloating washing plants. The mining methods described were developed during the last 30 years to copy with conditions peculiar to arctic and subarctic regions arid are now used by a large segment of the placer mining industry in Alaska. The operations described have been classified if m ii into three main categories: Those having sluices at a bedrock level, those having sluices above bedrock and those having mobile nonfloating washing plants (dryland dredges). Diesel-powered bulldozers and draglines convey or clevate gold-bearing gravel to the sluices, remove tailings, and strip waste gravel and other overburden. Diesel-powered centrifugal pumps supply water foe sluicing and hydraulic stripping. Detailed descriptions and unit cost arc presented for 14 operations to illustrate the numerous arrangements udder the first 2 categories.]

The gas-dynamic method is presented of calculation of explosion-proof distances during an explosion of the methane-air mixture in mine working. On the basis of this method is modelled of shock waves interaction with explosion protective parachute partitions, obstructions and water barriers. Calculations have been carried out of attenuation factors of shock waves during their interaction with explosion protective structures, arranged near conjugation zones of mine workings. Possibilities have been analysed of suppression of intensity of shock waves and of propagation of shock waves control in mine working network of coal mines by installation of explosion protective structures.

To investigate the effect on coal spontaneous combustion with high geo-temperature, an experimental apparatus was developed to measure characteristic parameters of two kinds of coal samples at different temperatures: one was 40°C (G coal sample) and the other was a rising temperature from room temperature (C coal sample). Based on the relationship between CO concentration and the temperature variation, a calculation model of the apparent activation energy of coal was established. The results indicated that the oxygen consumption rate, the generation rate of CO and CO2, and heat release intensity of G coal sample were higher than C coal sample. This trend was more and more obvious as the temperature increased. Furthermore, the apparent activation energy of G coal sample was lower than C coal sample, especially at low temperature stage, which demonstrated that the more the oxidation and exothermic reaction of G coal sample was enhanced, the less energy was required to break the barrier of oxidation reaction. Under the same condition, the speed of oxidation reaction was faster for the coal in the high geo-temperature environment, which was more liable to spontaneous combustion.CITATION:Lei, C, Deng, J, Xiao, Y, Shu, C, Wang, K and Wang, W, 2017. "Trial application of air decks on a production shot improved fragmentation (32% reduction in x50). Empirical fragmentation models and digital image processing software were used to estimate fragment size distribution of the blasted muck pile. The x20, x50, and x80 passing fractions, and top size were 42, 265, 683, and 1,455 mm, respectively. Air-deck application reduced explosives load in blastholes, lowering total charging cost by US$20/hole (15% decrease) and the powder factor to an average of 0.86 kg/m3 (12% decrease). Blast results were 443,624 t of blasted material from the block (90% of total muck pile) was smaller than 900 mm.RÉSUMÉ L’application pilote de trous d’air dans le cadre du coup de mine effectué pour commencer la production a amélioré la fragmentation (une réduction de 32 % des x50). Des modèles empiriques de fragmentation et un logiciel de traitement numérique des images ont permis d’estimer la composition granulométrique des fragments du tas de déblais abattus. Les fractions de passé de crible de x20, x50, x80 et la dimension supérieure étaient représentées par des dimensions respectives de 42, 265, 683 et 1 455 mm. INTRODUCTIONThe main objectives of production blasting are to achieve optimum rock fragmentation and to minimize overall production costs. Because blast fragmentation significantly affects the profitability of a mine, blasting is the first step of the size reduction in mining: An optimum size distribution is required to maximize the performance of mining and subsequent milling processes. If the fragmentation size distribution can be modelled and controlled, operations performance will improve. Blast fragmentation modelling is important in mineto- mill optimization: It allows the estimation of blast fragmentation distributions that can be modelled in downstream mining processes to determine the optimum blast design."

"This paper discusses the Advanced Technology Program (ATP)'s support over the last decade to the development and use of process modeling as a tool to address some of the challenges faced by the U.S. metal casting industries. A particular focus will be given to highlight how process modeling can be used to improve the manufacturability of components needed for high performance and critical applications. The challenges associated with the design and production of thin-walled, cast parts with intricate and complex internal geometries will be discussed. Modeling issues associated with the control of the final grain structure in the solidified parts will also be addressed. This paper will describe the advantages of using appropriate mathematical models for designing new alloys for use in various applications.Finally, the role that ATP has played in uplifting the U.S. technological base through partnerships with industry and academia in high-risk research in order to bring to market new and improved products for the broader benefit of the nation will be discussed.ATP's BackgroundIn the 1980s, U.S. industries were losing market share to low-cost, high-quality manufacturers from Asian countries. Corporate leaders and policy makers determined that in order to sustain and grow market share, U.S. industries needed to improve their competitiveness and productivity through product and process innovation. There was evidence that companies were systematically under-investing in leading-edgetechnologies and failing to complete the development of new technologies [l]. There were also arguments in academic circles that pointed to a potential market failure in the area of early-stage technological developments. These concerns provided impetus for creation of the Advanced Technology Program (ATP) within the National Institute of Standards and Technology through the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988. Through a rigorously competitive, cost-shared partnership with industry, ATP fosters the development and broad dissemination of high-risk technologies that offer the potential for significant broad-based economic benefits to the United States."

THIS PUBLICATION is the third to be prepared as a result of a cooperative project by the Bureau of Ships and the Bureau of Mines for accumulating literature published on zirconium and hafnium. The undertaking also resulted in the establishment of an information center on zirconium and hafnium at the Bureau of Mines station at Albany, Oreg., for the use of research organizations and others. The present bibliography consists of references (with abstracts) to pertinent literature on zirconium. The first publication in this series was Information Circular 7771, Bibliography of Zirconium, published in April 1957. It consists of 969 abstracted reports and 645 U.S. and foreign patents. The second publication, called a supplement to Information Circular 7771, is numbered Information Circular 7830 and consists of 844 abstracted reports and 62 U.S. and foreign patents. It was published in October 1958.

"The Zambian Copper mining industry as we know it today has its genesis from early in the 20th century in the 1920s. Consistent private sector-driven investment in the industry over a period of over 50 years in exploration, mine development and operation, development of minerals processing facilities, building of infrastructure for pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processing, with attendant support facilities, including building of whole new towns, resulted in copper production going from zero to a peak of 769 000 tons of copper in 1969. At the same time, the industry created jobs to the extent that in 1972 the industry had over 62 000 direct jobs. The industry was nationalized in 1973 and remained in government hands for just over 24 years. During this period, the industry experienced a serious decline in production levels, reaching the lowest level at the dawn of the 21st century in the year 2000 when production was 250 000 tons. In terms of jobs, an average of just under 2000 jobs were lost every year in the 24-year period, reaching just over 22 000 direct jobs in 2000. Following the return of Zambian politics to pluralism and liberalized economic policies, the government decided to privatize the mining industry. The process started in 1996 and by the year 2000 all the mining assets had been privatized. The new investors embarked on serious investment to upgrade the assets and to develop greenfield mining projects. Fourteen years later and investments of over USD 12 billion, the industry production levels increased year- on-year to reach a peak of 763 000 tons in 2013 with direct jobs reaching 90 000. This paper discusses the impact of the mining industry in Zambia on the economy in areas such as employment, support to other industries, direct contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP), foreign exchange earnings and social amenities. The paper also focuses on the performance of the mines during these periods vis-à-vis mineral availability, mineral grades and complexity, new technologies and human capital. This is looked at particularly in the light of current challenges the industry is facing and makes suggestions on how the industry can be nurtured to continue being a major driver for the Zambian economy and a major player in the international copper mining business."

Flinders Mines is an iron ore explorer and developer with a tenement package located in the Hamersley Ranges region of Western Australia, approximately 70 km north of Tom Price. Exploration over the past five years has identified a Global Resource in excess of 900 Mt at a grade of 55.2 per cent Fe (+50 per cent Fe cut-off). This resource is spread across multiple deposits and has been divided into a number of mineralisation type domains. These domains are comprised of transported hematite rich detrital iron deposits (DID) and goethite dominant channel iron deposits (CID) as well as in situ bedded iron deposits (BID). The BID at PIOP is low in alumina and silica with a high calcined iron content making it an attractive exploration target. BID exploration techniques include a combination of mapping, structural analysis, downhole gamma logging and 3D geological modelling. Relationships identified between existing BID mineralisation, geology and structure has aided in targeting additional mineralisation across the tenement and highlighted other previously untested areas that warrant further investigation.CITATION:Tylkowski, L N, Corlis, N J, McDonald, G D, Petts, A E, Jennings, M F and Thomas, B J, 2013. "Discussed is the use of wet Deep Soil Mixing, generally executed with single mixing tools 0.8 to 1.6m in diameter, employed in the foundation of viaduct supports. The applications involve economical patterns of ground improvement, covering in average about 40% of the foundation area or less, which contribute to the competitiveness of DSM solutions when compared to traditional piling. The focus is on selected aspects of the geotechnical design, applicable for geo-composite systems in which the interaction between the stabilised and the native soil should also be considered. Evaluation of settlement can be carried out with simplified methods, accounting for punching effects, or with more advanced FE models in case foundation tilt or differential settlements become important. Potential bending of DSM columns should be considered when evaluating column stresses, especially when dealing with deep deposits of soft soil and/or foundations loaded with overturning moments and/or high horizontal forces. Statistical evaluation of UCS data using lognormal distribution is recommended, and a new classification system for DSM application is proposed. Field investigations and monitoring data from completed projects are also presented.INTRODUCTIONThe first applications of wet Deep Soil Mixing in foundation of road viaducts constructed across and along the newly built A2-highway in Poland took place in 2002. Following detailed analyses, it was concluded that 39 viaducts, originally designed to rest upon large diameter piles in order to reduce excessive settlement of individual supports, could also be founded directly on the ground improved with DSM columns, fulfilling all relevant requirements of serviceability and ultimate limit states (SLS and ULS, respectively). It was also noticed that shorter construction times and lower costs of ground improvement with DSM contributed to substantial economical savings as compared to classical piling. Since then, more than 250 road and railway viaducts have been successfully founded on DSM treated ground in Poland, and wet soil mixing is now seen as a reliable and widely accepted technology for this purpose. These applications, together with a parallel use of wet DSM for foundation of buildings, industrial halls and wind turbines, have drawn international attention to the state of practice of wet DSM in Poland for foundation of engineering objects. What follows is an attempt to summarise experience gained during planning and execution of DSM works for foundation of the majority of road and railway viaducts constructed in the last 13 years, with emphasis on selected design aspects and evaluation of collected data and observed performance.The design process of DSM treatment is iterative, as described e.g. in Annex B of EN 14679, and typically involves two main steps, i.e., the selection of the design strength of cemented soil, called soil-mix design, and the adoption of suitable column pattern, referred to as geotechnical design. Soil-mix design was initially based on purposely arranged simple laboratory tests, involving mixing of soil specimen with different cement types and dosages and subsequent strength testing. However, with a growing number of completed projects the accumulated field strength data of different stabilised soils have been more and more frequently used, reducing the need for preceding laboratory testing of soil-mix to special projects only. Information on cement factors utilised in Poland and the range of recommended compressive strengths for different stabilised soils, as well as on mixing tools and characteristics of the wet method applied, can be found in Topolnicki (2008). Consequently, soil-mix design is not further discussed herein. Selected aspects of the geotechnical design are the main focus."

"IN FIELD WORK in the Cape Breton Highlands, which are heavily covered with vegetation, it is necessary to run traverses along the valleys of small brooks. We encountered difficulty in closing such traverses, and the following technique was developed to solve this problem. It has been tested in the field for four seasons by several people, and found to be simple, efficient and more accurate than any other compass-and-pace system of which we are aware. So far as we can find, the technique has not been described previously. It may be of use to others.The Cape Breton Highlands of Nova Scotia consist of hills of old intrusive and metamorphosed sedimentary rocks protruding up to 1,000 feet above the general level of the younger sediments which underlie the valleys. The flat hill-tops are the remnants of a plateau; drainage off the edge of this plateau has produced many small steep brooks. They occupy valleys which are up to 800 feet deep, and V-shaped in cross section, with steep sides covered by mixed conifers and hardwoods. The stream at the bottom is rarely more than a few feet wide, with a negligible meander belt, but with many bends, rapids and falls. Visibility along the stream, in consequence, is rarely more than a few hundred feet, and in many places much less.It was found impractical to map the streams by the method of meander lines, as described in many standard surveying texts and hand-books. The limited visibility, and the numerous bends of the brooks, necessitated many corners. Every corner introduces errors. To 'close' a survey with 40 or 50 such corners proved either very time-consuming or impossible. In most cases, however, the general direction of a valley may be obtained from an aerial photograph, or by direct observation, and this became the basis of the method adopted."

Criteria applicable to noise in coal cleaning plants are presented, and the generally applicable noise control principles and approaches are discussed. The operating characteristics and equipment of coal cleaning plants are described. Considerations entering in the selection and design of noise control means are delineated, and specific means for equipment noise reduction are described. The limited utility of acoustically absorptive materials in plant spaces is indicated, administrative means for reducing worker noise exposure are pointed out, and ear-protective devices are described briefly. The reduction of plant noise reaching nearby communities is discussed. Programs leading to quieter machines an coal cleaning plants are suggested.

Gaseous products resulting from rapid pyrolysis of coal and coal/inhibitor mixture's by a ruby laser and a flash-tube were monitored on-line by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The distribution of stable gases from the coal is not Greatly influenced by the addition of small quantities of powdered flame inhibitors. Preliminary studies of the reaction of elementary radicals with coal and coal/inhibitor mixtures are described. The different types of experiments are discussed with regard to possible modification and application to studies of flame inhibitor action.

Preliminary safe distances for blasting wiring from typical electromagnetic sources are presented. The distances are for underground coal mines and electromagnetic sources in the frequency range below 10 MHz. The distances are based on measurements performed at 3 locations in each of 3 coal mines. The measurement apparatus, measurement procedure, measurement results and the rationale used in the calculation of the safe distances are all described. The safe distances presented are dependent on the measurement results and their interpretation. More measurements are clearly necessary to establish the validity of the suggested distances.

In Alaska?s southwest corner, in the Bristol Bay region, 476 holes have been drilled to help define the size of the Pebble Project. The results indicate that the deposit holds close to 32 Mt (72 billion lbs) of copper and 2.9 Gt (94 million oz) of gold. The Pebble Partnership, an Alaskan limited partnership of Anglo American and Northern Dynasty Minerals, owns the project that consists of two world-class mineral deposits. Currently in the prefeasibility and prepermitting stage of development, the Pebble Project is one of the largest and highest profile exploration projects in North America. History The Pebble West Project was originally discovered in 1988 by Cominco (now Teck Cominco). Drilling programs in 1997 defined a near-surface mineral deposit of 1 Gt (1.01 billion st). Minerals found included copper, gold and molybdenum. Northern Dynasty Minerals acquired the property in 2001 and, by 2005, it had confirmed a measured and indicated resource of 4.1 Gt (4.5 billion st) containing 1.2 kt (42.1 million oz) of gold, 11.2 Mt (24.7 billion lbs) of copper and 612 kt (1.35 billion lbs) of molybdenum and additional silver. By September 2005, Pebble East, a deeper, but richer deposit had been found. Drill data by the end of 2005 confirmed a 3.4-Gt (3.7-billion st) inferred resource containing 19 Mt (42.6 billion lbs) of copper, 1.2 Mt (39.6 million oz) of gold and 1.2 Mt (2.7 billion lbs) of molybdenum.

"A self-tramming remotely controlled mobile Dry Scrubber (DS) was developed by J. H. Fletcher and Co. under a contract with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (NIOSH OMSHR) to reduce exposure of miners to airborne dust. NIOSH OMSHR laboratory testing showed that the DS averaged greater than 95% dust removal efficiency with the disposable filters and averaged 88% and 90%, respectively, for the optional washable filters in their pre-washed and post-washed test conditions. Although the washable filters could be reused, washing them generated personal and downstream respirable dust concentrations of 1.2 and 8.3 mg/m3, respectively, for a 10-minute washing period. The DS’s velocity pressure regulated variable frequency drive (VFD) fan maintained a relatively consistent airflow near the targeted 1.43 and 4.25 m3/s (3000 and 9000 ft3/min) airflow rates during most of the laboratory dust testing until reaching its maximum 60 Hz fan motor frequency or horsepower rating at 2610 Pa (10.5 in. w.g.) of filter differential pressure and 3.97 m3/s (8420 ft3/min) of scrubber airflow quantity. Laboratory sound level measurements of the DS also showed that the outlet side of the scrubber was noisier and the loaded filters increased sound levels as compared to clean filters at the same airflow quantities. With loaded filters the scrubber reached a 90 dB(A) sound level at 2.83 m3/s (6000 ft3/min) of scrubber airflow, indicating that miners should not be overexposed in relation to MSHA’s permissible exposure level (PEL) of 90 dB(A) at or below this airflow quantity (1). The DS’s washable filters were not used during field testing because of their lower respirable dust removal efficiency and the airborne dust generated from filter washing. Field testing the DS with the disposable filters at two underground coal mine sections showed that it can clean a portion of the section return air and provide about a 50% dust reduction at the face area downstream of the continuous miner (CM) operation. INTRODUCTION Coal mine worker overexposure to coal and quartz dust continues to be a problem at underground coal mining operations in the U.S. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) recently changed the standard for coal mine worker respirable dust exposure from 2.0 mg/m3 average during an eight-hour shift to 1.5 mg/m3 average over the actual working shift, effective as of August 1, 2016 (1). If more than 0.1 mg/m3 quartz mass is found in the coal mine worker dust sample, the applicable respirable dust standard is further reduced to the quotient of 10 divided by the percentage of the quartz in the sample (1). Over 90% of the mechanized mining units operating in U.S. underground coal mines are continuous mining machines (2). MSHA inspector dust samples from 2009 to 2012 showed that 3.7% of continuous miner operators exceeded the 2.0 mg/m3 dust standard, while 8.8% of these dust samples exceeded the new 1.5 mg/m3 dust standard and 9.7% of these samples exceeded the reduced quartz standard (3). Additionally, roof bolter dust samples at these mechanized mining units during this same period have exceeded the 2.0 mg/m3, 1.5 mg/m3, and reduced quartz levels at 1.1%, 3.7%, and 10.6%, respectively (3)."

Two 610 m (2000 ft) long tunnels were driven through water bearing silts, sands and clays beneath the Sacramento River using a 4.59 m (15.1 ft) diameter Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (EPBM). Four sheet pile shored shafts were sunk with and without dewatering. The pre-cast concrete segmentally lined and grouted tunnels were driven down at 6% grades beneath the river flood protection levees, buildings, roads, a railroad and adjacent to a Freeway Viaduct. Details of the schedule, cost, shaft construction, TBM, tunnel construction, and installation methodology for the twin1.676 m (66 in) steel force main pipes and environmental constraints are provided.

We must pursue conservation and energy management vigorously if we are to remain competitive in domestic and world markets, and minimize our reliance on external energy sources. Energy management in industry is discussed from three viewpoints: (l) as a means of directly improving profitability; (2) as a major factor in the supply picture; and (3) as a significant influence on Canada's balance of payments and over-all economic well-being. The Federal role in promoting a voluntary industrial energy conservation program is described.
