Electric shocks are a serious problem in the mining environment. Because of extremely wide ranging use of electrically powered equipment in the mining industry, the hazard to personnel due to electrical shock and related injuries are not restricted to any single area but cover the entire spectrum of mining activity. Electrical accidents, resulting in personal injury, due to im- proper or complete lack of grounding of electrically operated mining machines, form a significant percentage of the overall electrical accident picture. The object of this paper is to describe methods of detection of unsafe electrical conditions with respect to the grounding of electrically operated mining equipment. It also includes a discussion of prototype instruments which effectively monitor the condition of the grounding safety devices currently in use on mining equipment and warn of dangerous conditions as soon as they appear. The paper is based on work accomplished under USBM Contract Number 50357115. The contract was initiated under the Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center Program. It was administered under the technical direction of PM and SRC with Mr. Roger L. King as the Technical Project Officer. Mr. Daniel B. Dawkins was the Contract Administrator for the Bureau of Mines.

Security concerns have prompted the Department of Homeland Security to investigate the use of recording systems on all vessels holding materials used for blasting; a new regulation is expected in the near future. By measuring the strain developed in the legs of vessels with bolt-on sensors, it is possible to monitor the weight of vessel contents. Several companies make this type of sensor and recent versions give the required accuracy. This paper describes two generations of sensor, the second generation having a simpler method of installation that uses standard power and hand tools. Three types of indicator are available to monitor the material weight. 1) A simple electronic bar-graph indicator with a digital weight display. 2) A touch-screen display showing bar-graphs of multiple silos with digital weight displays plus their associated trend graphs, recent readings and an alarm log. 3) A data acquisition unit which acquires the weight digitally from up to 32 vessels and stores the raw and filtered date and time stamped data in a local computer database. This local computer then transmits the data via an Internet connection to a secure central database which allows the weights of all the storage vessels for a company to be viewed anytime and anywhere via the Internet. Historical trend graphs can be viewed and the data can be uploaded into an Excel file for further processing; for example to determine filling or discharge amounts. In addition, E-mail and SMS (Short Message Service) text alerts can be sent automatically when selected alarm levels are reached. Current research and development includes connection of vessels to the central database by a cellular wireless modem when a local computer or Internet connection is not available, as well as connection of remotely located vessels to a central point via “Wi-Fi bridge" radio data links. Future versions will include digital I/O (Inputs and Outputs) to record, for example, activation of filling and discharge devices as well as opening and closing of doors.

During the past 20 years, FKC-Lake Shore, located in southern Indiana, has been working with Contitech, the German conveyor company, to push vertical conveyor technology to new depths and open up additional opportunities for underground mine owners. Historically, the underground mining industry has largely been unable to realize the benefits of these efficient systems due to the design limitations in maximum depth and capacity. Until recently, only relatively shallow depth mines with low production rates have been a ?t for a vertical conveyor system. This, however, is changing with technical advancements in the Pocketlift system. With each milestone, a new vertical conveyor record is set for depth and capacity. For instance, in 2002, FKC-Lake Shore set one such record with the installation of a Pocketlift system at a mine in the Illinois coal basin with a lift height of 273 m (896 ft) and a production rate of 1.8 kt/h (2,000 stph). Although it was unthinkable at that time, today?s vertical conveyors are capable of reaching lift heights up to 700 m (2,300 ft) with an average production rate of 450 t/h (500 stph). These new lift heights and production rates are opening the technology to more potential mine owners and shifting the way people look at moving material in the future.

In order that the use of continuous mining machines be most economic, the equipment must be operated at rated capacity as much of the time as possible and downtime for repairs kept at a minimum. A large factor influencing any proposals for maintenance programs is the complexity of the machines—often the intricacies of the precision-built equipment requires engineering knowledge byond the scope of mine maintenance personnel. A training program is part of the answer; there are others. In addition to investigating a joint company-manufacturer equipment-design improvement program, Mountaineer Coal Co. has launched a detailed preventive maintenance program to combat extensive downtime often encountered when continuous miners are used. Everyone in the coal industry knows the importance of operating continuous miners at their rated capacity as much of the time as possible. The potential capacity of the miner is such that l-min. delay means from 3 to 8 tons of coal lost. Today's miner is a well designed, precision-built machine, complicated with hydraulic and electrical equipment and complex mechanical assemblies with all possible combinations of gears, levers, and rods. As the machine becomes more complex, the problem of maintenance becomes more acute. The transition from conventional to continuous mining has taken place so rapidly that the mine mechanic has been unable to keep pace. When there is a machine failure, the maintenance man usually employs either the trial-and-error or the play -it-by-ear method of repair, but this represents an expensive proposition. Mine mechanics, maintenance superintendents, and mine managers complain about the complexity of the machines and how difficult it is to keep them running. There is no shortage of skill in the design offices. Machines are designed by good engineers, but for engineers. What's the answer? Better trained maintenance men—better maintenance instruction—better field service. These are all good corrective measures, but the real cure is to provide for the men at the do it level. Designers have got to cooperate with men to simplify maintenance on the increasingly complex machine. The designer must be aware of how his machine can be maintained. Sometimes a simple design change in a bearing, oil seal, or a bushing will correct recurrent breakdowns. Parts such as filters, hydraulic cylinders, hoses, and pivot pins can be better arranged on the machine to make them accessible so that the mine mechanic can easily keep the machine producing. Therefore, to get our maintenance off on the right foot, the program must begin back in the design office, before the machine is delivered to the mine property. Realizing the importance of this aspect, our company set out on a joint company-manufacturer equipment-design improvement program. This is a formal program in which quarterly reports are written covering machine defects, design weakness, and general problems relating to machine maintenance and performance. The manufacturer in turn comments on each and every item appearing in these reports, indicating the action he proposes to take. In addition to the written reply, meetings are scheduled with manufacturer representatives to discuss further the outlined problems. The benefits realized from this organized program are both substantial and far reaching. Good maintenance begins with a good design. The subject of preventive maintenance is not a new one. Volumes have already been written on the subject. It consists primarily of doing the maintenance work when you want to rather than when the machine demands it. However, a preventive maintenance program can be overdone. Theoretically, if carried to ridiculous extreme, all working time could be spent inspecting and repairing the machines and no time would be left for production output. Our goal in maintenance is to maximize running time for all machines, and to prevent or at least minimize production downtime. This Bureau of Mines report presents the design for a commercial-sized flue gas desulfurization (FGD) demonstration plant that uses the citrate process. The goal of the Bureau's citrate process is to minimize the undesirable environmental impacts of industrial plants emitting SO2-bearing gas. The FGD plant is located at the George F. Weaton powerplant, Monaca, Pa. Construction was completed in April 1979 and will be followed by preliminary testing and a 1-year testing and evaluation program. Design capacity of the FGD plant is 156,000 scfm of 0.2-volume-percent-SO2 flue gas yielding about 16 tons of sulfur per day. The plant is intended to (1) clean fly ash, SO2, and Cl- from the gas while cooling the gas in a venturi scrubber, (2) absorb SO2 from the gas using 1,200 gpm of a countercurrent-flowing citric acid-sodium citrate-sodium thiosulfate solution, (3) react the absorbed SO2 in two 13,000-gal stirred closed vessels with added H2S, thus precipitating elemental sulfur and regenerating the citrate solution for recycle, and (4) recover the sulfur from the slurry by air flotation, followed by melting in a heat exchanger and separation from the occluded citrate solution in a sulfur decanter at 35 psi and 135° C.

Three methods of gold analysis are briefly described highlighting some of the problems and advantages of each. The variation of results between samples and splits and due to method of preparation is illustrated. The mean per cent difference of the fire assay values from the means of sample split values for three cases is 15 per cent.Finally, a comparison of the aqua regia leach atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and fire assay fusion AAS techniques is made.This shows that the mean precision, the ability to obtain the same value, of the methods at 98 per cent confidence is ± 30 per cent and ± 15 per cent respectively. The fire assay fusion AAS method is relatively more accurate than the aqua regia one.

"INTRODUCTION Shaft mines, coal and noncoal alike, have a common hoisting problem that remains largely unsolved - how to obtain a mechanical device that will suspend a cage or skip in a mine shaft if the hoisting rope should break or become detached from the cage or skip and that will function effectively under all conditions of service. Safety catches, or safety dogs, as they are commonly named, are installed on nearly all mine cages and many skips operating in American mines, but often, if the hoisting rope breaks, the cage or skip falls to the bottom of the shaft in spite of safety devices, causing much property damage and often fatalities.Available information relative to safety catches for mine cages and skips, desirable characteristics of safety catches and methods of testing safety catches to determine whether they are functioning correctly has been assembled in this publication for the convenience of those responsible for the safe operation of mine cages end skips and, more particularly, to focus attention on the need for a device that actually will stop and suspend a falling cage or skip under all conditions of use and do it without killing or maiming the occupants."

Shortage of natural gas is reviving interest in low-Btu fuel gas made by gasifying coal in fixed-bed producers. The Bureau of Mines gasified strongly caking Pittsburgh bed coal over test periods lasting four days in an experimental gas producer located at Morgantown, W. Va, Mechanical stirring throughout the fuel bed was effective for keeping the fuel moving and this stirring made the operation successful; hence, the gas producer was named the stirred-bed producer. Nuclear density gages were applied as control instruments to indicate coal flow and fuel level, and to record the frequency and location of void spaces in the bed, The gas, of nominal 140 to 165 Btu/scf calorific value, could be burned in a boiler for generating steam.

Phase I study efforts addressed: 1) acid mine drainage formation theory; 2) effects of inundation in reducing acid mine drainage formation; 3) summary information on the types of acid abatement technology currently available and the problems inherent in each; 4) analysis of two potential means of partially inundating abandoned segments of active underground mines to reduce acid formation. This subsequent Phase II Draft Final Report addresses all of the above, but concentrates on and defines Item 4. Seal construction techniques were taken through five logical steps as follows: A) Location Analysis; B) Coal Barrier Pillar Analysis: C) Ground Water Analysis; D) Design Considerations: E) Economic Analysis. The design details of both low wall dams and section seals were discussed in a series of segments: a) Case Histories; b) Feasibility Analysis; and c) Design (including representative calculations). Study efforts showed that both concepts are feasible only in certain mines where the geologic-hydrologic physical makeup is suitable to contain a mine pool. Low wall dams in particular were found to have extremely limited applicability as a means of pollution reduction. Section seals, while clearly dependent upon site specific conditions, have a some what broader range of utility and are more effective in pollution reduction. The proven dramatic reduction in acid mine drainage attributable to inundation makes this a concept that must be considered.

"Recently4/ it was shown that the total energy method5/ of spectrochemical analysis is suitable for the quantitative estimation of many of the elements of which ores are composed. It was shown how this method can be applied to the determination of germanium, tin, and lead. Continuing this work, the present report deals with analyses for beryllium, zinc, cadmium, and indium.There are three basic problems in these investigations. The first is to study the influence of those elements that make up the greater part of an ore sample on the spectral-line intensities of the elements for which analyses are being made, the latter generally being the minor constituents. The second is to develop proper methods for the preparation of standard spectrographic curves. Finally, we are concerned with improvement in equipment and procedure, so that greater accuracy can be achieved.As discussed previously, it is better to study as groups those elements that belong to the same group in the periodic table because their spectra are similar. Beryllium, zinc, and cadmium are thus related. Indium was included in this work because it is associated with zinc and cadmium in zinc ores.The authors wish to acknowledge the valuable assistance of the staff of the Bureau of Mines Analytical Laboratory who made the chemical analyses and supplied the ore samples used in this work.A brief description of the procedures followed in making the standard curves and analyses is given below; a detailed discussion will be found in an earlier paper.6/Basically, the procedure for determining a standard curve consists of two parts: (1) Choosing a suitable line in the spectrum of the element to be determined and (2) determining the variation in the intensity of this line with the amount of the element burned in the arc."

Valley Camp No. 3 mine was the scene of an experimental shortwall introduced in 1973 in an attempt to improve the recovery from the Pittsburgh coalbed in the Ohio Valley area where adverse ground conditions have imposed partial extraction methods with only 40 to 55 percent recovery of the valuable resource. The Bureau of Mines, under a cooperative agreement with Valley Camp Coal Co., monitored ground pressures and caving in the shortwall section in an effort to determine whether the roof strata, notably the limestone main roof, will cave to the extent that roof pressures at the face are relieved and whether the powered roof supports can sustain the roof load. The Bureau's efforts included mapping of clay veins, instrumentation of chain pillars and shortwall panels with encapsulated pressure cells, recording hydraulic pressures in the legs of the shortwall chocks, and core drilling underground and from the :surface. The experimental shortwall was a qualified success. Recovery increased 5.4 percent compared with partial extraction. Pressures in chain pillars and the abutment zone were not excessive. Hydraulic pressures in the chock legs did not approach the yielding pressure. Apparently, the limestone strata caved and the roof pressure at the face was relieved.

"The Otjikoto mining and milling complex is 90% owned by B2Gold Corporation, and began commercial operation on February 28, 2015. The milling circuit operates at a throughput 3.3 million tonnes per annum, with an average reserve gold grade of 1.28 g/t. The ore is high in Gravity Recoverable Gold (GRG), which varies between 73-91%, depending on ore type. Overall gold recovery since start-up is 98.2%, with about 63.5 % coming from the gravity circuit as doré. 2016 cash operating costs, and all in sustaining cost (“AISC”) were $361 and $604 per ounce, respectively.During design, three ore types were tested for GRG content, and based on the high GRG value of all three ore types, the decision was made to treat the full ball mill circulating load by gravity. Once operating, the gravity circuit performance was characterized by performing a detailed gravity audit, which included the ore, cyclone classification, Knelson concentrators, and the Consep Acacia intensive leach system. The deeper ores contain significant pyrrhotite, and this created some unusual challenges that had to be overcome. This paper presents the gravity circuit design process, the circuit commissioning, and the audit results and ongoing improvements.IntroductionHeadquartered in Vancouver, Canada, B2Gold Corp. was founded in 2007. Currently, B2Gold has five operating mines, and numerous exploration projects in various countries, including Nicaragua, the Philippines, Namibia, Mali and Burkina Faso. The Otjikoto Mine is located in the north-central part of the Republic of Namibia. It is situated approximately 300 kilometers north of Windhoek, the country’s capital, within the Province of Otjozondjupa. The Otjikoto mining and milling complex is 90% owned by B2Gold Corporation, and began commercial operation on February 28, 2015. The milling circuit operates at a throughput 3.3 million tonnes per annum. During design, a large emphasis was placed on gravity recovery, as the Otjikoto ores are unusually high in Gravity Recoverable Gold (GRG)."

Oceana Gold (New Zealand) Limited (OceanaGold) has commenced mining operations at the Globe-Progress mine in the Reefton Goldfield, an area that historically produced 2.1 million ounces of gold from underground quartz lode deposits. During the construction phase of the operation, advanced exploration programmes targeting near-mine prospects commenced. The focus of this ongoing exploration is the discovery of near surface, refractory gold deposits that are amenable to open-pit mining methods and treatment through the Globe-Progress process plant.   One such discovery is the Supreme deposit, located along strike approximately 3 kilometres to the south of the Globe-Progress mine. The Supreme area was tested extensively with diamond drilling in 2006, defining a deposit with similar mineralisation styles and grade to the Globe-Progress deposit. The mineralisation comprises a central core of gold-bearing quartz veins, locally containing visible gold, surrounded by a more extensive halo of refractory, disseminated gold associated with an arsenopyrite-pyrite sulphide mineral assemblage. Three subparallel mineralised structures host the mineralisation. These structures are highly oblique to the country rock orientations, extending approximately 250 metres along a northeast-southwest strike and at least 220 metres down-dip, with an average thickness of 12 metres and moderate dip to the southeast. Records of historical workings indicate that mineralisation extends further down-dip and remains open at depth. 5175 ounces of gold were mined historically at the Supreme deposit. OceanaGold have defined an Inferred Resource for the Supreme deposit of 0.84 million tonnes at 1.46 grams per tonne for a total of 40 000 ounces (at a 0.8 grams per tonne cut-off). Higher-grade zones of mineralisation exist within the deposit and further drilling is planned to test the extent, continuity and geological controls of the mineralised structures.

This volume summarizes mining and petroleum legislation in 22 jurisdictions of the Near East and South Asia. Within these jurisdictions, primary attention is given to requirements that must be met in each country for acquisition of rights to permit development of mineral resources. Coverage includes : First, identification of the controlling laws or statutes governing minerals acquisition and reference to the administrative authority; second, analysis of the laws governing mines and quarries and their products; and third, analysis of laws applicable to natural gas, petroleum, and related materials. Where pertinent, sections dealing with historical background or administration have been added. In countries where minerals are subject to control of states or provinces, those areas are considered separately from the central government.

The potassium mineral polyhalite (K2SO4.MgSO4.2CaSO4.2H20) found in large deposits in western Texas and southeastern New Mexico is associated with varying amounts of halite (sodium chloride, NaCl) and anhydrite (calcium sulphate, CaSO4). Although the anhydrite, because of its low solubility and slow rate of solution, is relatively inert, the halite is dissolved immediately in any process solution with which the polyhalite comes in contact. Limited quantities of sodium chloride in the liquors used for the hot extraction of polyhalite materially improve the results obtained,4 but only a very small sodium chloride content may be desired in the entering polyhalite in other procedures, such as Bureau of Mines process 75. In. all of the processes suggested for the recovery of potassium sulphate from polyhalite the control of the sodium chloride content will be desirable, if not absolutely essential to efficient operation. OCCURRENCE OF HALITE IN POLYHALITE A preliminary estimate of the amount of halite associated with typical deposits of polyhalite may be derived from drill cores, although it should be remembered that only 50 or 60 core tests have been made in the many hundreds of square miles of the Permian basin. From a mineralogical study of 41 of these cores, Schaller and Henderson6 state: In many of the sections of core that seem when viewed by the unaided eye to consist essentially of polyhalite, both halite and anhydrite are present in greatly varying quantities - with very minor quantities of clay and magnesite.

"The bad effects upon the health and output of miners that result when the ventilating current in a mine lacks sufficient cooling power have been described by Harrington and Sayers in a previous report (1)*** The normal temperature of the human body is about 98.5°F. and whenever work is done by the muscles, indeed even when sitting still, the normal bodily processes generate heat which must be given off, otherwise the body will become overheated and a number of bad effects will be produced. If it were possible to so enclose a man that he could continue to breathe and no heat could escape from his body he would die within a short time. In a series of experiments made at the Pittsburgh Station of the Bureau of McConnell and Houghton (2) found that a dry-bulb and a wet-bulb temperature of 112.5°F could he borne for only 35 minutes, even when the subject was at rest. A wet-bulb temperature of 100.4°F (dry-bulb 157°F) could only be tolerated for 45°F minute. Under such conditions the bodily temperature rises as much as 45°F above normal and the pulse is accelerated. Very uncomfortable sensations are felt when the pulse rate exceeds 135. The human body, like any other internal combustion engine, must be cooled in order to function properly.Under ordinary circumstances the air surroundings people is enough coder than themselves to permit this heat generated within the boiy to be river off with¬out difficulty. At higher temperatures, or when the rate of work, with its corresponding generation of heat is high, the body can not throw off heat fast enough, so it begins to sweat and the evaporation of the sweat cools the body. But the results of the experiments cited above indicate that in still air, even with the body at rent, it can not adjust its temperature when the air is above 90° wet- bulb. J. S. Haldane (4) says ""at a wet-bulb temperature of 60°F the actual amount of work done by the miner begins to fall off; as the wet bulb temperature rinse farther the work Bona gradually diminishes to the vanishing point. Then the temperatures indicated by the wet-bulb exceeds 85°F hard work in a mine seems hardly or the commercial working of a mine the wet-bulb thermometer should not in generaI, be allowed to rise above 80°F, unless perhaps where there it a good current."

"When it comes to new mines being developed, there is a general industry consensus that most low-hanging fruit has been picked. Many projects currently in the mine development pipeline have been around for decades, but were held back because of technical challenges. Future development of these deposits will likely require access to the public capital markets, and in Canada that means providing scientific and technical disclosure on these deposits in compliance with NI 43-101. As many of these “challenged” projects have metallurgical issues, the companies that own the projects need to ensure their metallurgical Qualified Persons provide transparent disclosure regarding proposed solutions to those issues.This paper provides an overview of the disclosure requirements under NI 43-101 that are pertinent to metallurgists, and other Qualified Persons who prepare technical disclosure regarding the metallurgical characteristics of a mineral project. It lists the triggers for a technical report under NI 43-101 and Canadian stock exchange policies, and identifies the sections of the report that should involve input from a metallurgist or process engineer. Mining at Newmont Mining?s Phoenix?s Mine is currently done by surface operation in the Fortitude and Bonanza pits at a combined rate of approximately 100 kt/d (110,000 stpd). A portion of the orebodies targeted by these pits was mined previously by underground mining methods, dating back to the mid-to late-1800s. Most of the underground workings (voids) are located in the west central area of the Bonanza pit. The surface operation requires excavation through voids, and there is a risk of pit floor subsidence that has to be addressed. This article presents a review of the risk mitigation measures that were implemented to reduce risks to people and equipment working in the area.
