This report is the 26th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations and the 8th of these reports to be issued on a calendar-year basis.1 It reviews briefly work in progress during 1961, and it provides references to publications by Bureau personnel during 1961 and also to a few older papers that were not cited in prior reports of this series. Details about some of the researches mentioned may be obtained by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes or in the further list in the Bibliography; other phases of work are reported here for the first time and will be covered in more detail by later publications. The coal program of the Bureau of Mines extends over the wide range of applied and theoretical studies indicated by the table of contents of this report. Applied studies are conducted in connection with the development and evaluation of new mining techniques, and the effective processing and utilization of coal and coal products. Analyses of coal, technical advice, and other assistance to Federal agencies in connection with fuel and boiler-water problems, and health and safety activities are among the practical services handled by the Bureau, Fundamental research such as that on coal structure and on the properties of coal is conducted because it will, over a period of the, furnish an increasing general knowledge about coal; scientists and engineers may use this knowledge in solving problems in mining and utilization of

"Pyrometallurgical furnaces are tapped through tap-holes that are opened with drills and oxygen lances. The lance is often used on its own or as the last step of opening the tap-hole. Interaction of oxygen with molten material inside the tap-hole can occur, and is a phenomenon that is not well understood. As part of a study that focuses on the effect of lancing on flow inside and around the furnace tap-hole, a cold-model validation was done. The validation study focuses on validating the MULTIPHASEINTERFOAM multiphase flow solver in OpenFOAM® for the problem involved. The sensitivity of the model to different materials properties (viscosity and density in particular) is presented with both cold models and the results from flow simulations in OpenFOAM®. IntroductionMany pyrometallurgical operations are carried out in furnaces where molten material accumulates continuously. Once enough material has accumulated and is ready to be removed from the furnace, material is tapped through one or more tap-holes in the furnace. Tap-holes differ significantly in both geometry and materials of construction, depending on the process involved – examples of different types of tap-hole configurations can be found in, for example, Nelson and Hundermark (2014). Tapholes all share one common feature: they are high, wear areas of the furnace. Molten material at high temperature flows through these areas, after which the tap-hole is sealed, usually using tap-hole clay. The purpose of the tap-hole clay is to harden inside the tap-hole and seal it until the next tap.Once ready to tap, a pneumatic drill and/or oxygen lance is used to open the tap-hole. The extent of lancing a furnace tap-hole depends strongly on the type of furnace. In, for example, many blast furnace operations lancing is limited as much as possible, and done only if drilling was not effective. In other operations, such as on small-scale pilot furnaces with short tap-holes, only lancing is used to open the tap-hole."

Section 25 has been assembled to give the geological, mining, or metallurgical engineer an overview of some of the important downstream operations that typically follow mining activities. This subject is obviously too broad and complex to be covered in detail within this Handbook. However, the engineer will be interested to learn about the basic fundamentals, and especially how they might affect the economics of the total project from prospecting and mining through to metals recovery and marketing. In this way, it is hoped that the engineer will have a better overall appreciation for the technical and commercial prospects of a mining and metal-producing project.

An underground wet shotcrete trial was completed last year to determine the effectiveness of wet shotcrete as an alternative support mechanism to dry shotcrete in the kimberlite environment. The wet shotcrete was manufactured at the underground batch plants, transported to site using an agiecar and transferred to the shotcrete pump. The wet shotcrete is pumped to the nozzle where compressed air at 7 bar and an accelerator, Meyco SA 160, is added and enables the shotcrete to be placed successfully onto the tunnel wall. No tunnel guard was previously placed on the sidewall and hangingwall. Geotechnical testing indicates that the Grace fibre performed extremely well with the energy absorption tests at 7 kg/m3and 8kg/m3where both achieved over the mine requirement of 750joules. The Grace fibre and wet shotcrete mix also achieved a compressive strength in excess of 55 MPa, well above the 45 MPa requirement for Premier Mine. In South Africa there are two suitable wet shotcrete machines available for the mining industry, the Spreymec, manufactured by Tamrock and the Fermel/Meyco wet shotcrete machine. The Spreymec is a fully imported machine. The Fermel component is manufactured in South Africa and the Meyco shotcrete components are imported and supported by MBT (Master Builder Technologists) in South Africa. The Fermel/Meyco machine is assembled in South Africa. Premier Mine has allocated some R2, 100,000 towards the implementation of the wet shotcrete system. If implementation is successful there should be an internal rate of return gain of 76% with regard to this project.

This report describes a method of measuring and analyzing the initial deformation which occurs in the medium surrounding a mine accessway as the opening is created. Discussed are (1) the hypothesis upon which the research is based; (2) the in situ rock-deformation measuring equipment developed; (3) the field tests, consisting of measuring the deformation of the medium around two 4-foot-diameter raise bores as the boring progressed; and (4) a finite-element technique to correlate theoretical with experimental results, using elastic theory. Described also are the raise-bore operation and performance. The instrumentation developed proved to have the sensitivity and resolution necessary to measure rock deformation around a full-scale raise bore during excavation. Tests show the relationships of rock deformation to progress of the raise boring and to time. The initial deformation of the opening appeared to be elastic. Using the deformation records and an estimated field stress, the modulus of elasticity was determined for the rock mass. In addition, the importance of this type of measurement in assessing support-problem areas is discussed.

The quartz-cassiterite-wolfram veins at the Aberfoyle Tin Mine, north-eastern Tasmania, form a sheeted zone about 200 ft. wide and 1,600 ft. long in slightly contact metamorphosed shales, slates and greywackes, and are associated with a cupola of aplitic granite whose top is about 1,050 ft. below the present surface. Economic mineralization persists from the surface down to a vertical depth of 1,050 ft. to 1,100 ft., dying away in the vicinity of the cupola. Down to the 9-level there is a progressive increase in wolfram content of the veins, and a decline in cassiterite content, with increasing depth.The veins are banded or zoned, with a seivedge of muscovite on the wall. Cassiterite, wolfram and sphalerite occur inside the selvedges, projecting into a core of quartz of varying width. Other sulphides form the central part of some narrow veins, or occur as clots in the quartz. The general sequence of deposition of the ore minerals was: (1) cassiterite, wolfram; (2) arsenopyrite, pyrite, molybdenite; (3) pyrrhotite (in part); (4) blende-group minerals-chalcopyrite, sphalerite, stannite, pyrrhotite (in part)-as solid solutions; (5) galena, tetrahedrite, matildite, native bismuth, scheelite; (6) marcasite and secondary pyrite, magnetite and hematite. The sequence of deposition of the gangue minerals was: (1) fluorine-bearing minerals-muscovite topaz, apatite, triplite, fluorite-more or less contemporaneous with the cassiterite and wolfram;' (2) quartz-contemporaneous with the earlier sulphides; (3) carbonates--contemporaneous with the later sulphides. The stages overlapped somewhat.The composition of the sphalerite and heat treatment experiments with the solid solutions indicate that the blende-group sulphides were deposited at about 6000 C., and cooled rapidly, so that unmixing of the solid solutions was arrested. This accords with the likelihood that the country rock temperature was not above 2000 C. Annealing experiments at between 3500 C. and 6000 C. led to further precipitation from solid solution at the lower temperatures, and to significant segregation by solid diffusion within, a week, indicating that both deposition and cooling of the ore were rapid processes-completed in a matter of days. "The Preissac-Lacorne batholith is composed of suites of early metaluminous calc-alkalic gabbroic to granodioritic intrusives, three late peraluminous monzogranite plutons and numerous Li, Be and Ta-bearing granitic pegmatites. The Lacorne pluton is dominated by biotite and biotite + muscovite monzogranites containing abundant Be and Ta-bearing granitic pegmatites (40-80% volume). The pluton is surrounded by swarms of unzoned or poorly zoned spodumene-rich pegmatite dykes. The La Motte pluton is composed of biotite monzogranites, biotite+ muscovite monzogranites and rare muscovite + garnet monzogranites. Li, Be and Ta-bearing pegmatites are less abundant than in the Lacorne pluton and are commonly associated with molybdenite bearing quartz-muscovite-K-feldspar veins. In the Preissac pluton, muscovite + garnet monzogranites and muscovite + biotite + garnet monzogranites are the dominant rock types. The pluton rarely contains granitic pegmatites and these are generally barren. However, numerous molybdenite bearing quartz and quartz-feldspar-muscovite hydrothermal veins are observed.Li, Be andTa-bearing pegmatites display a crude spatial zonation around their parent monzogranites. Spodumene-rich pegmatites are generally unzoned or poorly zoned and are confined to the surrounding metasedimentary or metavolcanic rocks or crop out in the early gabbroic to granodioritic intrusives surrounding the monzogranites. Ta and Be-bearing pegmatites are usually concentrated towards the margins of their parent monzogranites. The highly fractionated nature ofmonzogranites (high Rb/Sr, low K?Rb, Ba?Sr, Zr/Nb ... ), their peraluminous composition (corundum normative and muscovite bearing) and the numerous occurrences of Ta and Be-bearing pegmatite dykes represent important criteria for the exploration of fertile granites."

Quality assurance and quality control of drilled shafts has become a concern due to difficulties in accurately locating construction anomalies and determining load bearing capacity of defected drilled shafts. Various non-destructive evaluation techniques have been developed to estimate the integrity of the concrete in drilled shafts. While these techniques have been widely accepted, variables and unknowns can affect the measurement results. Results are typically difficult to interpret, leading to unnecessary construction delays and possible litigation over shaft integrity. In addition, influences of surrounding ground materials, stress states under different load conditions, and crack and residual stress development during concrete curing further complicate determination of shaft performance. This paper focuses on the evaluation of load bearing capacity of defected drilled shafts under various conditions by numerical analysis and modeling.

This report includes a short history of uranium and its uses, mineralogy of common uranium minerals, and information on the use of electronic prospecting equipment and tests for detecting the presence of uranium. Details are given on geologically favorable areas and formations and practical methods of prospecting. Some information is given on the staking of claims, what lands are open to prospecting, and methods of securing mining rights. A forecast of the economic outlook for uranium is included. Appendixes give sources of additional information and a list of libraries where unclassified Atomic Energy Commission reports may be consulted. Because the increasing use of uranium by industry has revived interest in prospecting and exploration for this element, the Bureau of Mines has issued this report, which brings up to date and expands the subject matter of a hand- book on uranium exploration and production published in 1956.l

Thermodynamic calculations based on the ideal system NiO - Fe203 - H2(g) - CO(g) - H2O(g) - CO2(g) show that it is not possible to selectively reduce nickel oxide in the presence of hematite because ferronickel is the zero-valent nickel-containing product. The calculations show that temperature, reducing atmosphere composition and oxide to reductant ratio have a marked effect on the nickel content of the ferronickel alloy and the amount of nickel reporting jn the alloy. The general trends based on the calculations correlltte well with experimental observations.

Severe dynamic multiple seam interactions can occur when active mine workings are subsided by underlying mining activity. The most dramatic events are usually caused by longwall mining or pillar recovery beneath open, overlying entries. But pillars in abandoned workings can also fail and cause subsidence and damage an overlying mine. This paper describes a case history in which an apparent ?pillar squeeze? in the abandoned workings of a lower seam was initiated during retreat mining in an upper seam. The event subsequently extended more than 1,500 ft and ultimately closed the upper seam mine. Analysis indicated that the pillars in the lower mine were adequately sized for the lower seam mining and were not affected by the initial development above them. When retreat mining in the upper seam had progressed several hundred feet, however, the pillars located directly beneath the pillar line were overloaded, and an extensive squeeze initiated in the underlying workings. The squeeze, in turn, subsided the overlying workings, causing widespread rib falls and roof instability. Previous examples of dynamic multiple seam interactions resulting from delayed subsidence of underlying workings have been reported in the literature. This is, apparently, the first recorded incident in which pillar recovery in an active mine triggered pillar failure in an underlying mine, which then triggered a dynamic interaction that impacted the active overlying seam.

Available barrier pillar design methods do not adequately account for overburden caving characteristics, the timing and magnitude of associated load transfers, the occurrence of unusual geologic features, or the effects of multiple-panel/multiple-seam mining. To address this problem, the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Cyprus Plateau Mining Corporation, conducted a barrier pillar study in a multiple-seam mine setting. Insufficient barrier width resulted in excessive load transfer to an adjacent/underlying section. Consequent entry and pillar deterioration resulted in the section being prematurely abandoned. This paper proposes an approach based on in situ measurements, which includes mine-specific loading conditions in the barrier design process.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting human factors research for the purpose of reducing accidents and improving the person-machine interface found in surface and underground mining operations. Miners are exposed to a variety of environmental stressors, e.g., extreme heat, noise, vibration, and adverse illumination, throughout the workday. Exposure to these environmental stressors has been noted in the literature to affect performance on vigilance tasks. Since impaired performance at vigilance tasks can lead to industrial accidents, further investigation of the effects of environmental stressors on human performance is warranted. A brief description of the environmental conditions present in the mining workplace is followed by a review of experiments dealing with the effects of environmental stressors on vigilance task performance. The applicability of past research to actual mining operations is considered.

The United States Bureau of Mines is establishing a computerized mineral inventory system to help the Federal Government appraise its mineral position and prepare programs insuring against critical shortages of materials. This system, called the Minerals Availability System (MAS), is a component of the Bureau's minerals intelligence function designed to conduct and maintain an inventory of minerals important to the Nation. The MAS defines the physical and commercial availability of the mineral resources. Known resources are evaluated and classified by deposit for entry into a computer storage and retrieval system. An integral concern of these evaluations is the cost of mining and beneficiating the ore contained in specific deposits. To meet this concern, a cost handbook was developed as an aid to preparing feasibility-type estimates for capital and operating costs of mining and primary beneficiation of various types of mineral occurrences. Cost data, obtained from U.S. and Canadian companies, were used as the basis of this handbook. The handbook presents cost curves and equations for each component of the mining and beneficiation process. Factors for each cost component are also given, thereby allowing the updating of cost for time, geographic location, labor rates, and mining and milling conditions. Included in the latter conditions are items such as the length of haul, need for rock bolts, and a rock work index for ores and rocks of various hardnesses. 1.2. USE OF THE HANDBOOK Using the handbook a feasibility-type estimate falling within 25% of expected actual cost is obtainable by summarizing cost components. This handbook should not be used to determine the cost of any single component of a mining or beneficiation system, as any single component may not fall within the 257 limit. It must be understood that anyone who uses the handbook must have a comprehensive knowledge of mining and processing technology and cost estimating procedures. More than 410,000 visitors from 171 countries helped bauma ’04 set new attendance records at the world’s largest construction machinery and mining technology show. The show, held in Munich, Germany March 29-April 4, marked bauma’s 50th anniversary. At the last bauma show in 2001, attendance was about 406,000 people from 157 countries. At bauma ’04, international attendance increased to 31 percent from 27 percent in 2001. In addition to record-setting attendance, bauma ’04also attracted 2,801 exhibitors, up from 2,341 in 2001. Exhibitors came from the United States, Europe, China, Japan and the Middle East. Exhibitor space topped 500,000m2 (5.4 million sq ft), another record. And, for the first time, there were more foreign exhibitors than German exhibitors, show organizers said.
