Safety rules for installing and using electrical equipment in and about coal mines covered in this information circular supersede those previously included in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 514, issued in 1952. This revision brings these rules up to date and more nearly in line with present operating and safety practices in the industry. The rules are intended to supplement existing Federal and State regulations, and no provision shall be construed to oppose or supersede any provisions of the Federal Mine Safety Codes, the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act, or the mining laws of any State. The rules were designed to permit progress, such as application of new or improved materials and equipment or use of new practices where these materials, equipment, or practices retain or improve the level of safety established by these requirements. It is hoped that they will fill the need for a concise edition for mine electricians and electrical engineers, especially those who do not have ready access to more detailed rules or codes.

Construction of foundation piles or diaphragm walls through rocky or boulder containing formations has been long-standing difficulty. It has been widely understood that the down-the-hole hammer is the most capable mechanical means but is restricted in drilling diameter by the unavailability of drillhead sufficiently large diameter and the difficulty of disposal of cuttings. A great number of submersible motordrills have been used for the construction of cast-in-place piles and diaphragm walls and the reverse circulation system employed has demonstrated its advantage of the prompt removal of cuttings. The development of multi-head down-the-hole hammer drill combined with reverse circulation system presents a powerful engineering choice for those "hard-to-drill" ground formations. This paper will introduce the features of the system and some actual operation results in the foundation engineering through those hard rocky ground formation in some countries.

The Indian Standards code of practice for design and construction of underreamed piles contains provision for installing such piles in expasive soils. In recent years, a large amount of research work has been carried out in the analysis, design, construction and performance of underreamed piles in expansive soils. This paper suggests that the results of this research field tests should be included in the code. Various additions and modifications as well as deletions that should be incorporated in the code are discussed.

The effect of bubble size and concentration of certain reagents on the terminal velocity, shape, path, and drag coefficients of single air bubbles in distilled water has been investigated. Bubbles of a certain size range rise considerably faster than Reynolds number-drag coefficient relationships predict, whereas a small amount of frothing agent reduces their terminal velocity. The rapid velocity at which bubbles rise in distilled water appears to result from slip at the boundary and from circulation within the bubbles. Surface-active agents retard bubble motion through prevention of both circulation and slip at the boundary. A surface tension concentration gradient helps maintain bubble sphericity. HE gas phase is one of the indispensible in-gredients in flotation operations. Flotation depends on the collision of an air bubble and a mineral particle in a pulp and their ability to remain in contact long enough for adherence to take place. Before it is possible to understand the mechanics of air bubble-mineral particle encounter, it is necessary to learn more about the nature of bubbles themselves before collision with a mineral particle has taken place. To date, little work has been done on air bubbles in flotation systems. In 1945 Fahren-wald' presented a study of the role of frothers on air bubbles and on aeration in flotation, and recently Wark and Sutherland' discussed the work of Rosenberg- in relation to flotation. The research reported in this present article was undertaken to investigate systematically the effect of bubble size and the concentration of certain reagents on the terminal velocity, shape, path, and drag coefficient of single bubbles in distilled water. Most of the work is concerned with the effect of a-terpineol on bubble motion in water, but studies were made with potassium chloride, potassium hydroxide, potassium ethyl xanthate, and potassium amyl xanthate. Experimental Method and Materials: To obtain free bubble rise and reduce wall and surface effects, the investigators used a tank of 5½x5½x30-in. internal dimensions, filled with water to within 4 % in. of the top.' The tank was made of acrylic plastic so that the walls would have good optical properties. Distilled water, which was re-distilled in a block tin still and saturated with air before each test, was used in all the experiments. All solutions were made with reagent-grade chemicals. During each experiment the water was at room temperature, and during the course of an experiment the temperature did not fluctuate more than 0.5°C. Since the experiments were performed over a period of six months, the temperature varied between 25° and 27°C. The temperature at which each series of experiments was conducted is recorded with the data. The experimental apparatus is presented dia-grammatically in Fig. l. The development of forced aeration as an approach to enhancing copper sulfide leaching is traced from its earliest development up to present day operations using this technology. Both large-scale field tests and commercial operations are covered. The historical portion is preceded by an introductory discussion of the role of air (oxygen) in sulfide leaching. Sufficient aeration may be achieved via naturally induced convective airflow. However, cases are identified where this is insufficient, leading to retardation of the sulfide leach rate. For these situations, forced aeration may be beneficial. The historical portion of the paper focuses on the major field tests that have been conducted in Montana, Nevada and Utah, along with commercial operations in the United States, Australia, Chile and Peru. The paper concludes with some general comments about the applicability of forced aeration, which are based on the information developed to-date.

Preliminary economic mining feasibility studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to estimate mining costs in the Juneau gold belt area of the Juneau Mining District, southeastern Alaska. Investigations were conducted on the economics of two mineral deposit types: (1.) Berners Bay vein gold deposits, and (2.) stockwork gold deposits containing gold, silver, and lead. Cost estimates were developed using the Bureau of Mines Cost Estimating System (CES). Discounted cash flow return on investment (DeFROI) was calculated using the Bureau's MINSIM computer program. Underground mining of a Berners Bay vein gold deposit was found to be economic (15 pct DCFROI) at a recoverable metal value of $353.67/mt for a 100 mtpd shrinkage stoping mine with a 10 yr mine life, $324.76/mt for a 20 yr mine life, $138.63/mt for a 500 mtpd longhole stoping mine with a 10 yr mine 1 ffe, and $127.50/mt for a 20 yr mine life. Block caving mining of a large stockwork gold deposit was found to be economic at a recoverable metal value of $15.28/mt for a 18,000 mtpd mine with a 20 yr mine life.

A coal shuttle car equipped with a pulsed laser optical ranging system to provide guidance for an automatic steering system was tested in production coal mining. Test results are presented for the two mines where testing took place, and some operator's reactions are included. Automatic steering control keeps the car cantered in an entry, and automatic turns are made at intersections as signaled by the operator. All other controls-tram, conveyor, brake, etc, remain manual and require operator control. Complete override of steering while in the automatic mode is retained by the operator, who may grab the steering wheel at any time and turn in opposition to the automatic signal by applying about 10 foot-pounds of torque.

An investigation of the possibility of improving the grinding characteristics of a gabbro ore containing copper and nickel sulfides via a thermal shock treatment technique has been carried out. The results obtained indicate that the breakage characteristics of the gabbro are particles can be significantly improved by preheating the are particles to a temperature around 400°C followed by rapid water quenching. For a given power input and feed size, the thermally treated material produces a product of much finer distribution than the untreated material. An assessment of the improvement in grindability has been made by calculating feed size selection functions for untreated and heat-treated materials.

Within the famous Harrods department store, a new lift shaft has been constructed, servicing a depth of 22m below ground level as well as the existing 6 storeys of the store. The shaft will connect with a new goods tunnel which is to be excavated beneath the shop, as well as new floor space above ground level which has resulted from the infilling of a previously existing lightwell within the store. The construction of the deep shaft while maintaining uninterrupted use of the store by the Client led to a number of innovative solutions being undertaken. Empirical assessments were made of settlements anticipated from the construction process, which took place within a congested environment of existing foundations. Various elements were designed and installed to mitigate the effects of the inevitable ground movement on the surrounding overlying structure, which supported sensitive high quality finishes and mechanical and electrical installations. The reinforced concrete lining of the shaft was contained within a cofferdam of minipiles. The minipile placement accuracy (1 in 150) was vital as it could not interfere with the subsequent tunnelling works. As the scheme progressed this became even more critical since the minipiles were needed as support for parts of the permanent works. This paper describes:- the high quality placement and control of the minipiled cofferdam, the methods employed in assessing ground movements and the techniques used to mitigate against the effects of these movements.

The objectives of the research were to determine whether a model health and safety program could be defined in terms which would enable its application to mines of all types, and, if such a model program could be defined to determine through evaluations in two mining companies whether it would achieve measurable improvements. This volume describes the model, how it was applied in the field, and how it was evaluated. Anecdotal data to illustrate common kinds of safety problems and their solutions are included. The literature and field research that preceded the model definition is discussed in Vol. 2, which covers the period of September, 1980 to September, 1981.

Over 60 simple; were prepared and forwarded to Dr, S. Z. Toma, TPO, PMSRC as a result of this project. Included among these samples were various low temperature forms of silica. Samples of quartz, cristobalite, and tridymite with iron, manganese, and titanium impurities present were prepared. In addition, a long series of samples both wet ground and dry ground for times from 1/2 to 8 hours were prepared. Numerous miscellaneous samples were submitted which included kaolinite, calcite, muscovite, illite, montmorillonite, Ba3(P04)2, and YPO4 among others, in response to special requests from the TPO. The silica rich portion of selected binary (CA 203-Si02, In 203-Si02, Li20-Si02) Na20-Si02, PbO-Si02, SnO2-Si02, Sn02-Si02 BaGa204-SiO2 and SrGa204-Si02) and ternary systems (Na20-Ga203-Si02 and Li20-Ga203-Si02) was investigated to determine the effects of solid solubility on the stabilization of the high temperature forms of tridymite. In addition to the determination of the extent of these crystalline solubilities, observations were made. on the mechanism of the transformation of silicic acid to tridymite and the rate of the reaction in the presence of foreign ions,

COMPRESSED air is held in high esteem by the mining engineer as a medium for the transmission of power. The transmission, however, is accompanied by a high percentage of loss. Of the total work done by the steam cylinder'in compressing the air inthe air cylinder, less than 50% is ultimately utilized by the machines underground. These losses are due to its essential and inherent properties as a gas. One of the sources of loss is that due to transmission through the pipes which distribute the air from the receiver to the various places where it is used. The rush for alternate iron-units in the last few years spurred a true outbreak of new alternate iron units projects many of them incorporating new process in what can be classified as the.most fruitful and innovative technology outburst, in the steel industry, in decades In a recent paper we focused on what would be, in our opinion, the ultimate targets of the use of alternate iron-units by mini-mills: 1. to improve quality, 2. to reduce cost, 3. to increase plant productivity, and 4. to improve `supplyability'. With these objectives in mind liquid hot-metal, among all possible scrap substitutes, has been proven to be by far the best. This conclusion stems from many different authors who have reviewed the `value in use' of hot-metal against other alternate iron units and measured its impact on steel-shop productivity and cost (Figure 1).

Factors of importance in the ntilization of coal fines are mentioned, and the results of flotation tests on coal fines from three important coal seams in New South Wales are presented.INTRODUCTIONEconomic utilization of fine coal is an important problem in the Australian coal industry, particularly as the proportion of fines mined is increasing with progressive mechanization.While the use of uncleaned coal fines may be economic, it may be preferable to beneficiate them, but the most economic process must be selected.For beneficiating coal finer than about 28 mesh, froth flotation can be applied, but mining engineers should avoid practices that may be detrimental to flotation. Such practices include the indiscriminate use of water, particularly that containing a wetting' agent, for dust suppression. In addition, clay stemming in wet conditions may produce slimes which could adsorb on coal surfaces, while the use of oils and greases as well as the application of stone dust and chlorides in roadway consolidation may influence adversely fine coal beneficiation.This paper deals with the application of flotation to samples of fine coal from the Bulli, Greta, and Victoria Tunnel seams. New 40Ar/39Ar dates of vein and wall rock adularia from seven epithermal deposits and one porphyry copper prospect help constrain the ages of mineralisation in the Hauraki Goldfield. Vein adularia from the Paritu region yielded a single 40Ar/39Ar plateau date of 16.315 ¦ 0.066 Ma. Five 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of three samples of vein adularia from the Opitonui deposit overlap within error to yield a preferred age of 13.149 ¦ 0.016 Ma. Two samples of vein adularia from the Night Reef at the Broken Hills deposit yield exceptionally flat 40Ar/39Ar plateaus, and all dates overlap within error to provide an age of 7.121 ¦ 0.010 Ma. Two 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of one sample of vein adularia from the Wharekirauponga deposit overlap within error to provide an age of 6.318 ¦ 0.061 Ma. Four 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of three samples of vein adularia from the Maratoto deposit overlap within error to provide an age of 6.411 ¦ 0.022 Ma. Two samples of adularia from altered wall rock at the Sovereign deposit yield three 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that range from 6.547 ¦ 0.021 to 6.806 ¦ 0.028 Ma. This suggests that mineralisation formed around 6.6 Ma, but the results are complicated because the adularia contains minor illite that post-dates adularia formation. Results from the Karangahake deposit are complex. Two samples of vein adularia yield three 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that range from 6.116 ¦ 0.116 to 6.901 ¦ 0.101 Ma, whereas one sample of wall rock adularia that contains minor late illite yields two 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that overlap within error to provide a date of 5.734 ¦ 0.041. The range of dates indicates that more work is necessary to understand the history of mineralisation at this deposit. Two samples of vein adularia from the Tui deposit yield four 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that overlap within error to provide an age of 5.714 ¦ 0.017 Ma. These results confirm previous work that indicates that the ages of epithermal deposits young southward in the Hauraki Goldfield. These results are also consistent with previously postulated different ages for deposits hosted in Kuaotunu Subgroup rocks in the northern goldfield (>10 Ma), and deposits hosted in Waiwawa Subgroup rocks in the southern goldfield (7.1 to 5.7 Ma).

The current edition of The Australasian Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) Code was published in 2012 and, after a transition period, the 2012 edition came into mandatory operation on Dec. 1, 2013. There is a significant change between JORC 2004 (Clause 44) and JORC 2012 (Clause 49) for the reporting of industrial mineral resources and reserves, which should be addressed by ASX-listed players in the industrial minerals space.

The adsorption of Cu2+ ions by Penicillium sp. displayed a dual rate, with an initial faster phase followed by a slower one. The adsorption rate increased with increasing pH due to chemical and biochemical reactions. The Cu-loading capacity of the biomass increased at higher initial Cu2+ concentrations. Above 40 degrees C the adsorption rate decreased which may be due to partial hydrolysis of biopolymers which are essential constituents of the cell wall. Adsorption kinetics followed the Freundlich isotherm and the equilibrium concentration that was calculated on the basis of the isotherm matched the observed value well. A series of theoretical adsorption curves were produced using mathematical correlations between the mass transfer coefficient, the Cu2+ ion concentration at equilibrium and at time t. The correlation between the theoretical and observed adsorption rates for different experimental conditions was good. It was concluded that the results from the study were best explained using a mass-transfer adsorption model

The work described in this report was directed toward identifying and devising methods to minimize the previously observed variability between working level hour exposures and the alpha particle track densities resulting on Track Etch films exposed to mine atmospheres containing radon and radon daughters. The disequilibrium between radon and its daughters was shown to directly affect this Track Etch film calibration factor. The wide range of disequilibrium states possible in mine situations amply explains the variability in the previous tests. A file of published mine atmosphere composition data was compiled and was used, along with atmospheric compositions derived from several theoretical models ref the atmospheric behavior, to evaluate the variability of several dosimeter configurations and concepts. A nonlinear, iterative regression analyse; was formulated that successfully predicted working levels to within 8 to 10% from only the alpha particle activities (Rn, RA, and RaC') data such as are obtainable from Track Etch films over a wide range of disequrlibrium conditions. A model expressing atmospheric concentrations as a function of radon source strength, plate out rate factor, ventilation rate and the fractional re-entry by recoil of previously platted-out daughters was derived and used in the regression program in addition to preparing a set of reference tables and graphs showing the disequilibrium behavior of the atmosphere. Other factors that can affect the Track Etch Film response writ considered and shown to he less crutial than the disequilibrium state. The results of a series of exposures of a dosimeter concept fixture in the Denver Mining Research Center radon chamber air presented and discussed.

This paper covers the application of a systematic maintenance plan by the Plant Engineering Department of Rio Algom Mines Limited, Milliken Division. The plan established the function of work study, developed and installed formal work planning and labour cost control procedures, and extended the existing preventive maintenance routines. In June, 1961, assisted by management consultants, a more scientific approach to maintenance was instituted. The emphasis was placed on the control of labour. The development and application of the primary control system was established with-in six months. Since then, the Department has operated for a year, consolidating the system. The procedure of the installation, the results achieved and the results to be expected will be discussed. JNTRODUCTION THE Milliken Division of Rio Algom Mines Limited operates a 3,000-ton-per-day uranium mine, in the Elliot Lake district of Ontario, which went into production in April of 1958. The lowest operating level is 3,000 feet below surface. Mining is carried out by open stopping, with planned pillar support and footwall haulage on rail.
