Rather like the mythical "Economic Man" "an employer" in this context must necessarily be an abstraction, and the views possessed by such an abstraction, a composite of many views known to have been expressed. Not even the complex Conciliation and Arbitration legislation in this country provides any helpful specifications, except in one peculiar particular. The Australian Conciliation and Arbitration Act provides an almost totally tautological definition, except in that one oddity referred to above. It is this : "An employer means any employer in any industry, and includes any person who is usually an employer in an industry, and also includes a Club." No doubt there is some perfectly justifiable reason for such specific and unique particularity in an otherwise meaning- less definition. That need not trouble us in this exercise.

A new process for leaching zinc sulphide concentrates with gaseous mixtures of SO2 and O2 in aqueous solution is described.The reaction of SO2/O2 with Rosebery, Mt. Isa, Broken Hill and Elura zinc concentrates yields zinc and iron sulphates, elemental sulphur and some sulphuric acid. Rates of zinc extraction are controlled by a surface chemical reaction without apparent interference from the elemental sulphur layer for SO2 concentrations up to 9 per cent in the gas phase. Pyrite in concentrate exerts an activating effect, possibly through galvanic interaction with the sphalerite. Metal extractions are dependent on SO2 and O2 tenors of the gas, particle size, and the acidity and zinc content of the solution, but are independent of the ferric ion level. Extractions also reach maxima at about 85°C.Generation of acid may be prevented by conducting the reaction in the presence of ferrous iron and at acidities of 40 g/l or greater. Zinc and iron levels in Elura lead concentrate may be reduced by leaching with SO2/O2.

Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have been used for the construction of various tunnels for mining projects for the purpose of access, conveyance of ore and waste, drainage, exploration, water supply and water diversion. Several mining projects have seen the successful and economic beneficial use of TBMs, and there is an increasing awareness of the benefits of TBMs for mining projects. Key technical considerations for the use of TBMs for the construction of tunnels for mining projects include geological issues (rock type, rock alteration, rock strength, rock abrasivity, durability, ground water in flows), depth of cover and the potential for overstressing/rockbursts, site access and terrain, portal locations, TBM constraints, minimum tunnel size, tunnel support requirements, contractor and labor experience, and project schedule demands. TBMs offer key project schedule benefits with high rates of progress, which is a unique economic advantage recognized for mining projects where timing is of the essence in order to advance mining development and achieve early startup for operations. A thorough evaluation of the anticipated ground conditions should be performed as part of the decision to adopt a TBM for a mining project. Minimum specifications for TBMs are necessary in order to prevent the incorrect type of TBM from being used. Appropriate geotechnical investigations are necessary in order to provide key information on the anticipated subsurface conditions for careful planning and design of the proposed tunnel alignment. The overall site and geological conditions associated with some projects may suggest that it is not appropriate to use TBMs for some mining projects due to a perceived higher risk. The empirical equilibrium constantsd the heat of reaction for the reduction have been determined from 300° to 500°C. The mechanisms of the oxidation of uranium and magnesium from dilute bismuth solutions have been investigated. The kinetics of some of the reactions were affected by air adsorbed on the uranium oxides. THE Liquid Metal Fuel Reactor studied at Brook-haven National Laboratory uses a solution of uranium in bismuth as the fuel. Corrosion and stability problems require that the fuel solution contain corrosion inhibitors and deoxidants. Of the additives tested, magnesium has been found to be the best deoxidant and zirconium the best corrosion inhibitor in bismuth. Some experiments1 indicate that magnesium may play a secondary role in increasing the effectiveness of zirconium in inhibiting corrosion. The work reported here was intended to determine the relative concentrations of Mg and U required to prevent oxidation of the uranium fuel in the event of an air leak. In addition, an attempt was made to identify some of the mechanisms of the oxidation and reduction reactions occurring in the liquid bismuth solutions. EXPERIMENTAL Apparatus and Procedure—The equipment shown in Fig. 1 was designed so that the reaction kinetics could be studied as functions of temperature, melt composition, pressure, and flow rate. At the start of a run, the 10-liter bell jar (F) is removed by opening the bottom Dresser fitting (L), and the bismuth and additives are placed in a pyrex crystallizing dish (I). The bell jar is replaced, the system is evacuated to 10-5 to 10-6 mm Hg and then the heater (J) is turned on. When the selected temperature is reached, the oxidizing gas is admitted to the system to the desired pressure as read on the manometer (D). Gas is introduced through the slide tube (Q) which has a pyrex frit (R) sealed to its bottom. Stirring is accomplished by immersing the end of the tube in the melt. To maintain a constant pressure under flow the input and evacuation rates must be equalized. To obtain this condition stopcock (C) is closed and flowmeters (B) are matched. The reaction is "stopped" by closing the inlet flowmeter and quickly evacuating the system. To obtain a liquid metal sample, the system is evacuated with the sampler positioned near the surface of the liquid. The sampler, Fig. 2, is then immersed until its thermocouple reading matches thermocouple (G) Fig. 1. The system is then pressurized with helium which forces the solution through the frit. Twenty to 30 min elapsed between the time the system was evacuated and sampled. During evacuation and pressurization of the system, the temperature variations did not exceed ± 5°C. While bubbling occurred the temperature remained constant to within 1/2 oC. The volume of the equipment was determined by adding a known volume of air at atmospheric pressure to the evacuated system and noting the resulting pressure.

A case study from a current Ausenco project is presented to demonstrate the importance of maintaining high carbon activity to illustrate the driving force for plant improvements such as a carbon regeneration kiln upgrade.This paper revisits the factors that influence carbon activity for gold loading, with emphasis on deactivation by organic solution components such as flotation reagents.Kiln process design requirements for effective thermal regeneration are reviewed including the interaction of parameters such as temperature, kiln atmosphere and residence time.The different types of kilns that have been used for carbon reactivation are described. A check list is provided of what to look for when purchasing a carbon reactivation system for dealing with severely fouled carbon. This covers the ancillary equipment as well as the kiln itself.While the effectiveness of the carbon reactivation kiln is vital to maintenance of high carbon activity it needs to be remembered that this is only the end of pipe solution. Iron and steel scrap has accounted for 45 to 50 percent of the metallics used by the steel industry. In an electric furnace which utilizes a 100-percent cold charge consisting of about 99 percent scrap and 1 percent pig iron, sensible heat from molten pig iron is not present as it is when hot metal is charged to open hearths and converters. A study of means for more efficient utilization of iron and steel scrap in steelmaking indicated that the time and fuel requirements to melt scrap were important cost factors, particularly in arc-furnace steelmaking. A process to preheat scrap economically prior to charging into the arc furnace has been developed, utilizing efficiently the heat from combustion of fossil fuels as a substitute for electric-arc heating in the initial stage of arc-furnace steelmaking. Scrap is loaded into a portable vertical cylindrical furnace body that is open at the top and has a perforated dropout door at the bottom. In the heating operation, the furnace body containing scrap is placed upon a hollow base connected to a flue, and then the burner and combustion-chamber unit is lowered on top of the furnace body. The stream of hot-combustion products flows down through the bed of scrap imparting heat to it, and the cooled gases exhaust through the flue. After the heating operation the furnace body containing hot scrap is transported to the arc furnace for charging. Thus, the furnace body serves as a charging bucket for top-charged arc furnaces, enabling this preheating process to be integrated into existing material-handling patterns in many arc-furnace plants.

X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy used for the analysis of mill samples results in improved control of flotation concentrators.Techniques and equipment for sampling pulp streams, filtration and drying, grinding, briquetting and X-ray fluorescence analysis of samples have been developed.The current methods in use permit the analysis for lead and zinc in six pulp samples within 30 min total elapsed from the start of sampling. The X-ray method gives a precision at least equal to the former routine wet-way assay methods.The equipment is used also for pilot plant control, as a means of solving complicated analytical problems and in the rapid qualitative analysis of exploration samples.INTRODUCTIONIn milling and concentrating operations, classical methods for the assay of lead and zinc have been mainly of use for accounting purposes and for the post-mortem examination of plant operations, but have been of little value for rapid mill control. Where attempts have been made to apply these methods to control assaying, it has been necessary to modify the procedures and introduce short cuts which have tended to reduce their reliability.Even with these shortened procedures, the time taken to obtain a limited amount of information rendered them of little value for the control of milling operations where sudden, large fluctuations can occur. In recent years, a number of new and rapid analytical techniques, based on physical rather than chemical principles, have been introduced.These include direct reading emission spectroscopy, x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and atomic absorptionspectroscopy.

"INTRODUCTION The Holt-McDermott Mine is wholly-owned gold mining operation of American Barrick Resources Corp. that begun operations in June 1988.The property is located 0.5 km. south of Highway 101 East in the Harker-Holloway Townships of Northeastern Ontario, 7 miles south of Lake Abitibi and 15 miles west of the Quebec-Ontario border.Employees of the operation travel daily from various communities in the area, predominantly from Kirkland Lake, Ont., which is located 65 km. to the southwest.The significance of the operation is that it is the first full scale operation associated to the Oestor-Porcupine Fault to go into full production in recent history as well as the first Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) operation in the province owing to the natural occurring carbonaceous ores that are associated to the ore body and the geological fault systems.GEOLOGYThe Holt-McDermott deposit is located in the Abitibi Greenstone Belt, a short distance west of the Ontario-Quebec border. Ore grade material follows the footwall contact of a fault zone known locally as the McKenna Fault, which is thought to be a splay off of the Oestor-Porcupine Fault, itself a major feature in the Abitibi belt.The McKenna Fault strikes approximately east-west (as does the Oestor-Porcupine) and dips to the south at sixty-five to seventy degrees. The fault lies within a package of mafic volcanic rocks (basalts). These rocks have been strongly altered and mineralized adjacent to the McKenna Fault, and the resulting lens-like ore bodies constitute the mining targets."

The use of soil nailing has grown steadily in the UK over the last 15 years and it has recently become more popular in the Republic of Ireland. This paper presents three soil nailing temporary works case histories where the technique has been used to support steep excavations in difficult ground conditions. It demonstrates the effectiveness of soil nailing when applied in appropriate conditions. Details of design methods and construction techniques are described and those aspects of soil nailing that will benefit from further study and development are identified.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines studied mines and prospects in the Bristol/Granite Mountains Wilderness Study Area (WSA) in 1982. The 45,000 acre WSA, located in the eastern Mojave Desert of California, is underlain by Mesozoic plutonic rocks with scattered roof pendants of Paleozoic (?) metasedimentary rocks. Two mines and six prospects are identified; one mine, the Silver Lode Mine, and a prospect of unknown name are adjacent to the area. The Silver Lode Mine has occurrences of silver, lead and zinc. Within the study area, the Comanche Mine has occurrences of iron and copper and the Iron Victory Prospect has an occurrence of iron. None are large enough to constitute a resource. Occurrences of magnesian marble at the Comanche Mine, Iron Victory Prospect, and elsewhere in the area contain too much MgO for commercial use other than agricultural soil supplements or crushed stone. Transportation costs to markets would exceed the value of the rock. At the Comanche Mine, situated in a roof pendant of marble, about 10 tons remain of a 110-ton pod of magnetite which contained 42.5% iron, and less than 50 tons remain of a mineralized fault breccia which averaged 2.5% copper and 0.3 oz/ton silver. Magnesian marble contained 41 to 45% CaO and 14 to 16% MgO. Primary and secondary silver, lead, zinc, and copper minerals are disseminated along altered joints and in quartz veins in quartz monzonite at the Silver Lode Mine, adjacent to the WSA. Analytical data are sporadic; samples contained as much as 0.12 oz/ton gold, 1.8 oz/ton Silver, 1.1% lead, 3.8% zinc, and 0.3% copper. Mineralized zones in the workings are not resources, but they might indicate possible silver-lead-zinc resources at depth. At the Iron Victory Prospect, lenses of magnetite and hematite with some chalcopyrite occur in a skarn lone in a marble roof pendant. About 110,000 tons of iron-rich rock, averaging 47.2% iron, are present; the largest lens contains about 30,000 tons. About 150,000 tons of magnesian marble, averaging 41.0% CaO and 11.7% MgO, are also present. Deposits of stone, and sand and gravel in the WSA are too distant from markets to be resources. Occurrences of energy minerals were not identified.

Until not so long ago most ring geared mills were operated with fix speed motors only. By using the latest generation of medium voltage frequency converters, new possibilities have arisen to improve the grinding process. Beside all the direct and indirect advantages, several dedicated functions have now been implemented for ring geared grinding mills in the minerals industry. The sophisticated operational functions ensure a smooth, safe and reliable operation with minimum stress for the mechanical equipment and therefore utmost availability of the mill. Several papers have already been presented concerning the benefits of using this state of the art technology for mill drives. Now this paper is focusing on the experiences gained with this kind of sophisticated ring geared mill drive system rather than only show and explains the operational benefit of the different functions. Several measurements of different operating conditions, starting, frozen charge remover, controlled roll back, backlash, etc., made on an installed and commissioned 2 x 5 MW dual pinion ring geared mill drive system will be shown and discussed. The accuracy of the load sharing between the two 5 MW motors during starting, normal operation and stopping will be demonstrated using real measurements from an operating system. Finally the inherent features of these drive systems are briefly discussed.

Block caving is an underground mining method for the profitable extraction of massive, low-grade orebodies. Lately, it has become the mining method of choice, for many mining companies, because of depleted high-grade orebodies, and declining metal market prices. Block cave mining, however, still faces several challenges. Lack of access to the cave remains a major issue in understanding the rockmass response to mining for method optimisation. Improving our understanding of the rockmass response to caving will lead to safer and more productive operations. Combining large datasets from multiple sources with virtual reality scientific visualisation (VRSV) is a viable alternative to understanding complex cave behaviour without access to the cave. This is achieved using immersive environments with the ability to view complex multi-dimensional data (beyond 3D) graphically. VRSV offers a unique platform where it becomes possible to immerse the multi-disciplinary experts, and/or management team, in a virtual mine environment for quick decision making and fast resolution to conflicting conclusions. The underground mining system is complex due to multiple interrelating factors such as geology, excavation geometries, stress and time. Block caving is even more complex than most underground mining methods due to the network of tunnels required, and the use of induced stress, among others. As a consequence of the complexity in the block caving environment, it is vital that the mining system is analysed holistically, as a system, rather than optimizing individual factors one at a time. This paper presents a customised software module developed for use in the Advanced Visualisation Interactive Environment (AVIE) at The University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, to enable VRSV investigation into block cave mining systems (BCMS). This approach has the potential to provide a better understanding of the effect of time in in rock engineering, which has proven to be an important factor in hard rock mines (Ma & Daemen, 2006; Malan et al., 1997; Suorineni, 2010) but never validated. This work back analyses the early undercutting phase of a case study block caving operation with the view to understanding time/sequence effects. There is evidence that heterogeneous rockmass time-dependent behaviour governs the seismic response of the rockmass following undercut developments.

An experimental and analytical investigation was conducted on a recoverable pit bottom buffer. Work was conducted at the Colorado School of Mines using the U.S. Bureau of Mine-s free fall test tower. The four-sided butter, one of several designs by Cable Belt Ltd., was constructed of reinforced rubber slabs. The kinetic energy of falling weights, 1670 to 6000 lb, was absorbed by the flexure of rubber slabs loaded along their edge. A series of constant energy, 3000 ft-lb and maximum design velocity, 600 fpm tests were conducted. Static testing of the buffer established the load-deformation behavior. A large hysteresis loop plotted above and below the data published by the manufacturer. Creep was evident during; the loading Lend unloading cycle. Electronic instrumentation measured deceleration using your accelerometers; overall and intermediate movement was found from four displacement transducers; bending strains were recorded at four locations; and base reactions were measured by using four load cells. Data were recorded on tape and played back on a recording oscillograph. High speed movies were taken of all the tests. Symmetry of response and rebounds, when they occurred, were noted. From the displacement-time and load-time data, maximum decelerations were calculated by four methods and different assumptions. Good agreement was found from these approaches. Impact loads ranged from a low of 0.7 to a high of 6.1 gs. A dynamic computer model was written for the response of the buffer. Displacement-time, and acceleration-time plots show close correspondence with experimental data for the ten experiments. Data from accelerometers, displacement transducers, strain gages, and load cells are included. The computer program listing, and displacement-time acceleration-time plots are also presented.

Many buildings in Boston are founded on untreated wood piles, which can deteriorate and lose their structural capacity if groundwater levels are lowered below the tops of the piles, exposing the wood to air in the unsaturated soils that surround the piles. The problem of wood pile deterioration due to lowered groundwater levels in Boston first became evident in 1929 following discovery of rotten piles beneath walls of the Boston Public Library building. Repairs to reconstruct the library building?s wood pile foundations were made in 1930 using pit underpinning methods. Today, more than 80 years later, the subsurface conditions beneath several of Boston?s historic neighborhood areas continue to be plagued with low groundwater levels - regrettably resulting in ongoing deterioration to the wood piles that support some of Boston?s oldest and most beautiful buildings. Pit underpinning is still recognized as the preferred approach to repair wood piles and restore uniform foundation support beneath the impacted buildings. This paper provides a brief historical review of the land filling in Boston through the early 1900s that led to the use of wood piles as building foundations. Also discussed is the impact that groundwater level can have on the long term performance of wood pile foundations and the pit underpinning procedures used to reconstruct decayed wood pile foundations in 1930 beneath the Boston Public Library, and today beneath some of Boston?s oldest buildings. Also included are discussions on engineering controls and permitting requirements that help ensure safety and protection to the workers and buildings during underpinning, and some procedures being used to supplement and improve the loading capacity of the reconstructed foundations and facilitate construction of new useable below-grade space.

Four three-phase equilibria and one two-phase equilibrium in the FeNi- S-0 quaternary system in the vicinity of 1023 K and Pso2 = 1 atm were studied using the following emf cell 2 Pt,o2 (air)Zr02 .CaO/Pso2 = 1 atm, mixture of phases, Au The four three-phase equilibria are sp + (Fe,Ni )S + Ni 3s2, sp + Ni 3s2 + NiO, sp + NiO + N1S04 and Fe2 o3 + sp + (Fe,NOS04 -Y:he two-phase equilibrium is sp + (Fe,Ni)S. The two-.phase equilibrium was measured by using mixtures containing a major portion of one phase and a minor portion of the other. The results are presented in terms of oxygen potential as a function of YNi = nNi/(nN1+nFe) at constant temperature and pso2 = 1 atm. The stability diagram was also calculated using appropriate thermodynamic models for all the pertinent phases. The calculated diagram is in accord with the measured ones.

"SYNOPSISRecent developments in the use of the Bartles-Mozley table and the Bartles CTS screen are described for the gravity preconcentration of fine heavy mineral and metal particles present in low grade pulps. The B-M table is a relatively new device used for the recovery of particles of up to 100 micron size down to 5 microns or in the case of gold and platinum, down to 1 micron. The CTS screen is a wet screening device used for feed preparation ahead of the Bartles-Mozley table and will size effectively down to about 300 mesh. Results and operating data for a number of different materials are given including outline flowsheets; the effects of the major variables on the performance of the table are briefly discussed. The potential of the B-M table to treat a variety of different ores, coal, tailings, and waste products are considered. The utilization of the B-M table in association with other unit processes to improve overall results as well as to improve the economics of design and performance of plants are also mentioned.INTRODUCTIONA number of new gravity concentration devices have been developed in recent years for the recovery of fine heavy mineral and metal particles but for reasons which include low capacity, high capital or operating costs, competition from other and better processes, the absence of simplicity or reliability in operation etc., only a few which include the Bartles-Mozley table, have been proved to be of commercial application.The name of the machine is derived from the inventors name, Richard Mozley, who developed the B-M table at the University of Bristol in England. Use of bored displacement piles has experienced significant growth in the UK piling market sector, largely due to their environmental advantages over other piling methods and through cost benefits. Bored displacement piles are a cast-in-situ construction which can be formed with minimal production of spoil and offer low noise and vibration compared to driven displacement piles. A large variety of bored displacement piles have been developed. This paper describes a standard system for their classification. The development of the different types is described along with the factors which have led to their increased use. Consideration is given to processes undergone by the soil during pile installation and design approaches for bored displacement piles are compared. Comparisons are made between the different classifications of bored displacement pile. Comments are also made on the installation of such piles. It is concluded that complex changes occur in the stress states of the surrounding soils. Such effect of the pile installation on the soil should be accounted for and there is a need, therefore, to further refine the design process for these piles.

In longwall coal mines, estimation of roof strata condition, sequence of loading, and supporting requirements are of a high degree of importance, and they are directly related to production and safety. Also, a prediction of the initial caving distance is rather complicated to calculate, because there are many parameters that effect caving process?roof and floor strata conditions, thickness of immediate roof, depth of cover, excavation geometry, and magnitude, and direction of principal stresses. This paper presents the results of 3D numerical modeling of the initial caving mechanism using the finite difference code FLAC3D at the E1 longwall panel of the Parvade 1 underground mine located in the Tabas area in the central part of Iran. The initial caving distance obtained was 10.4 m. Also, the results of numerical modeling have been compared to the analytical methods, such as Peng?s method. The results show good agreement with each other.
