The leaching and reduction of Cr(VI) in soils contaminated by chromium-containing slag were investigated with column experiments. The results showed that Cr(VI) concentration in leachate decreased from 988 mg L-1 to 407 mg L-1 after 7 days when water was used as leaching agent. However, Cr(VI) in leachate in culture medium treatment was not detected at above periods. In comparison, Cr(VI) concentration in leachate from autoclaved soil remained 398 mg L-1 at the end of experiment. The results indicated that the indigenous microorganism was capable of reducing Cr(VI). The amount of Cr(VI) reduction was 335 mg at the whole experiment period and the reduction rate was 67.09 mg d-1. Carbon supply showed minor effect on Cr(VI) reduction. However the reduction capability of Cr(VI) could be improved by combination of the carbon and the nitrogen. The optimal quantity was 5 g L-1 of yeast extract and 4 g L-1 of glucose.

A good thing is becoming a bad thing. Rock mass classification systems, that are so excellent for communications between engineers and geologists, and that can be valuable in categorizing project experience, are emasculating engineering geology and rock mechanics. Some engineering geologists have been sucked into thinking that Q and RMR values are all that is needed for engineering purposes, and seem to have put aside what can be learned from structural geology and geomorphology. Many rock mechanics engineers seem to have forgotten the scientific method. This paper attempts to redress the situation by showing how mechanics can be used in rock engineering to design with a similar rigour to that used in the fields of structural engineering, hydraulics and soil mechanics. It also attempts to remind practitioners of what can be achieved by skilled engineering geology.

Recent legislation and expected future legislation is aimed at reducing the dust levels developed in underground coal mines. Several techniques for reducing dust levels are being evaluated. One of these is the modification of cutting parameters such as feed rates, cutting speeds, and pick configurations in order to reduce the amount of dust generated. In order to evaluate the feasibility of modifying cutting parameters to reduce dust, the Bureau of Mines commissioned Battelle to construct a small scale mining machine which could be used for evaluating the effects of those changes in cutting parameters. Specific features of this machine were that it should be highly instrumented to measure various cutting parameters, should have a wide range of feed and speed controls, and it should be possible to vary the pick configurations and geometries on the machine. In addition, it was desired that this machine should have cutting capabilities which greatly exceed present coal mining practice and also that the unit should be small enough and portable enough that it could be taken into and out of operating coal mines with a minimum of interference with the normal coal mine operations. The first step in constructing a machine to meet these requirements was to determine the cutting forces and approximate sizes of components which would be required to cut at the speeds and feeds specified by the Bureau of Mines. Initial calculations using; published data on cutting forces indicated that cutting forces in the neighborhood of 5,000 lbs and power levels of approximately 30 horsepower would be adequate for the application. However, further data developed during the course of the project indicated that when low efficiency picks are used, cutting forces and powers can be two to three times as high as these initially estimated values. As part of its efforts to maximize process efficiency and decrease energy requirements in mineral processes, the Federal Bureau of Mines has investigated methods for beneficiating bastnäsite ores from Mountain Pass, Calif. The results of a bench-scale study on the flotation of bastnäsite ore are presented. Flotation at a pulp temperature of 40° to 45°C yielded a cleaner concentrate containing 58.7 pct RE203 at a rare-earth recovery of 67 pct. These results are comparable to those reported for the commercial beneficiation method in which the pulp is heated to boiling before flotation. An attempt was also made to recover a barite flotation concentrate from the bastnäsite rougher tailing. Concentrates containing only 70 pct barite were obtained.

"INTRODUCTION Pilot-plant studies on processes for converting low-grade domestic manganese ore to high-grade oxide or sulfide products by pyrometailurgical process was initiated at the Boulder City, Nev., Experiment Station in 1942. These investigations were given impetus by the possibility of a national shortage of ferro-grade manganese oxide for war needs.The manganese ore employed-in most of the pilot-plant smelting tests was from the manganosiderite-nodule deposits at Chamberlain, S. Dak. This deposit although low-grade, is extensive and represents, the largest reserve of manganese in continental United States. 6/ The Bureau of Mines has recently developed a Carryall mining-conical rolls treatment method that shows promise of making possible economic removal and subsequent beneficiation of the nodule-bearing shales. 7/ Smelting tests were made also on Artillery Peak, Ariz., mill concentrates in the productions of unrefined manganese matte for the steel The pilot-plant smelting program was based upon the fundamental fact that manganese, like copper, will sulfidize and become miscible with FeS. The matte this formed represents the initial smelting step in the pyrometallurgical treatment of the beneficiated ore. The concentrated nodules containing about. 18 percent manganese were smelted with varying amounts of pyrites and appropriate fluxes to produce Mns-FeS mattes containing 16 to 50 percent manganese. When the manganese and iron was completely sulfidized, the mattes contained 16 to 23 percent manganese. Reducing the pyrite resulted, of course, in the selective sulfidization of manganese and the production of a matte containing a correspondingly higher ratio of MnS to FeS. Complete sulfidization smelting produced slags of lower manganese content and hence resulted in higher manganese recoveries in the matte."

One of the biggest challenges for the mining industry is, quite literally, how to the keep the equipment rolling. There is a limited amount of companies that manufacture the 4.2-m- (14-ft-) tall, 5,670-kg (12,500-lb-) tires needed for the haul trucks that are approaching the 362 t (400 st) pay-load class, such as Terex?s MT6300-AC and Caterpillar?s 797F. And, while these might be the most impressive tires, they are not the only ones that are in short supply. The shortage of tires has affected just about every kind of machine, and the demand for those tires has been extremely high for more than five years with no end to the shortage in site. The results presented in this report deal with the elimination of explosion hazards of ether-oxygen mixtures by the addition of helium. The method is based upon the fact that every combustible gas, vapor, or dust will not burn or explode when the oxygen content of the mixture is reduced below certain definite values. These critical oxygen values are usually different for each combustible, varying with the percentage of the combustible present in the mixture and also with the inert gaseous material used to reduce the oxygen content of the mixture.

This chapter summarizes data on crude mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Common- wealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are tables that show the principal mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables 'were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of volume I and in the State chapters of volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is normally termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the production of auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

Gold in the stibnite veins of Costerfield, Victoria, was described in 1922 1, prior to any mineragraphic examination, as (a) free yellow gold (b) free rusty gold and (c) combined gold. The free yellow gold occurs in quartz and will amalgamate with mercury. The free gold of dull, rusty or copper-red colour occurs in massive stibnite and has been stated to resist amalgamation with mercury. The dull colour is only skin deep and the colour is bright when the rusty gold is scratched. The appearance of the rusty gold is spongy or cellular and it generally occurs near small cavities in the stibnite. The suggestion that the cellular character indicated the removal of a certain amount of stibnite leaving a residue of se.condary gold cannot be sustained.It now appears probable that the rusty gold is formed by the primary dissociation of a gold antimonide and is distinct in origin from the normal yellow gold which is deposited with quartz or stibnite from auriferous mineral solutions.The combined gold referred to in the earlier paper was the gold contained in the stibnite as revealed by assay. Such gold was at first thought to be either dissolved in the stibnite or else present as free interstitial particles too minute for observation in transmitted light in thin sections.Subsequent examination of numerous polished,surfaces disclosed the small particles of gold occurring in the grain boundaries in aggregates of fine grained stibnite 2. The assumption that all the gold in the stibnite, as revealed by assay, occurred in this way is now known to be incorrect, because limited amounts of a gold antimonide have been found in the veins.

The paper deals with new approach for measurement and evaluation of chemical microheterogeneity of elements in polycomponent metallic systems (i. e. steels, Ni-alloys). The method is based on the original mathematical model for determination of distribution curves of dendritic segregation of selected elements and on the original mathematical model for determination of the effective partition coefficients of these elements in the structure of analyzed alloy. Application of the method at research of chemical heterogeneity of continuously cast steel slab is also presented. The original results of measurement of dendritic microheterogeneity of eight elements (Al, Si, P, S, Ti, Cr, Mn and Fe) in structure of nine zones of a transversal section of slab are given.

Near-surface temperature measurements in two granite quarries show that diurnal temperature variations are significant to a depth of 1 or 2 feet, and annual temperature variations are significant to a depth of at least 25 feet. As a result, ground stress anomalies due to temperature exist near the surface, and their magnitude depends upon the time of day and the time of year. Rock stress and corresponding temperature measurements were made in one granite quarry over a rock temperature range of 33° to 81° F. Measured rock temperatures show good agreement with values predicted from one-dimensional heat flow theory. Calculated and measured stress-temperature coefficients for the two granites in this study are given. Thermally induced stress variations in near-surface rocks tested were as large as 1,690 psi from combined daily and seasonal temperature changes.

This publication summarizes the in-house and contract research and development projects programed for fiscal year 1981 by the Bureau of Mines under its Minerals Environmental Technology activity. The document provides a mechanism for interested parties, including potential contractors, to gain insight into ongoing and projected work of the Bureau?s environmental research efforts. Research to identify and correct environmental problems associated with mining and metallurgical operations has long been an integral part of the Bureau's mission. The environmental research and demonstration activities of the Bureau were consolidate in 1979 with the formation of the Minerals Environmental Technology program, which is directed toward the elimination or reduction of environmental problems associated with the extraction and processing of minerals. Among the efforts underway are development of data and technology for assessing the potential environmental impact of minerals development, for monitoring minerals extraction operations, and for establishing viable reclamation requirements on abandoned mine lands; development and demonstration of technology 'or control of environmental disturbances during minerals extraction operations; development and demonstration of land reclamation and mine closure techniques to restore or enhance the productive use of mined lands; development of engineering techniques that incorporate state-of-the-art mining environmental technology in the design and planning of minerals extraction operations; development and demonstration of new mining systems that greatly reduce or eliminate the adverse environmental impacts of minerals extraction; and providing the technologic base for Federal, State, and local establishment of environmental standards for mining operations. Included in the minerals-processing-related work are projects to clean mineral-processing waters: demonstrate a Bureau process for scrubbing SO from powerplant stack :;as; recover dissolved minerals from process streams; stabilize discarded dusts, slags, and tailings: remove hazardous contaminates from byproduct wastes; reduce generation of waste solids; and improve metallurgical process engineering to eliminate pollution. Approximately $21 million was appropriated for this work in fiscal year 1981.

The Wolgan Seam of the Upper Permian IlIawarra Coal Measures of the Western Coalfield of New South Wales consists of high volatile, low sulphur, medium hard coking coal with high fluidity. This seam, 1·8-2·4m thick, in the Wolgan area, dips gently at 1°_20 ENE and lies at 160-440m below the deeply dissected surface of the western margin of the Blue Mountains plateau.A detailed study of the deposit has revealed that the Wolgan Seam consists of four main coal plies separated by three distinct stone bands. Each of these subunits is lenticular and displays individual physical, chemical and mineralogical characteristics which exhibit distinct spatial distribution patterns across the area. Most noticeable is the presence of long linear ESE-trending zones of low ash - high volatiles - high fixed carbon - high fluidity which delineate the major distributary pattern within the deltaic environment of coal formation.This seam contains some of the highest fluidity coal in the world.The Wolgan area, close to the western margin of the Sydney Basin, is characterized by:I. a regional, closely spaced, homogenous joint fracture pattern dominated by an orthogonal pair set trending 3400 and 0700, to which the face- and butt-cleat directions respectively of the Wolgan Seam are sub-parallel, and2. a more widely spaced, heterogenous, cross-cutting pattern of regional structural fractures. Zones of bad roof conditions are probably associated with these lineaments which are subvertical and trend in three majordirections, viz., 005°,035° and 115°.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the results of a program to develop small, rugged mechanical dust collectors (scrubbers) with high dust collection efficiency and low energy comsumption for controlling dust in coal mining operations. All of the scrubbers described are similar in configuration and are powered by 6-hp, 2,000-ft3/min vane axial fans. Air pressure differential is less than 6 inches water column. Height of the scrubbers? including fan is less than 14 inches, width is less than 16 inches, and length is less than 45 inches. The flooded fibrous-bed scrubber achieved respirable (less than approximatey 7 µm) dust collection efficiencies of 95 percent. The small-diameter-cyclone scrubbers showed about 92 percent efficiency and can be best where excess water is a problem. The wetted brush scrubber showed 88 percent efficiency at low cost, and the wetted fan scrubber showed a slightly lower efficiency (87 percent) but offered the smallest size and cost. A suitable water droplet eliminator is described.

Fly ash is a by-product from coal-fired power stations that is captured from the exhaust gas stream by electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) or bag houses. It is mainly derived from the inorganic components in coal but also contains residual carbon from unburnt fuel (measured as LOI). In the past, nearly all fly ash was sent to landfills or tailings ponds by power generators but this trend is quickly changing due to landfill costs, sustainability requirements and the inherent value in correctly processed fly ash. The main property that makes fly ash suitable for recycling is its use as a pozzolan. Pozzolans exhibit cementitious properties that make them suitable for partial cement replacement, and that can have beneficial properties for concrete mix designs. Fly ash can be used to replace up to a third of the of the Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) requirement. Suitable fly ash nearly always requires the removal of the less reactive coarser fraction from the finer fraction. Due to the pozzolanic nature of fly ash, it must be processed dry and separation is normally required at 45 micron. In response to the increasing demand from a range of dry classification applications, Metso purchased an established air classification technology suitable for both mining and construction applications. The classifiers intelligent design efficiently utilizes the air flow which keeps power requirements low whilst including a scrubbing/recirculating function within the classifier that allows extremely efficient separations even at very fine sizes. This technology is of global interest to Fly Ash processors, but should be of particular interest in India which is both the second largest cement producer in the world as well as producing 80% of its power from thermal sources. This paper is intended to give a brief overview of fly ash and requirements for use as a pozzolan, air classification of fly ash and a case study from an established and experienced fly ash producer. The paper is a general review of practice in design of sub-level open stopes in Northern Rhodesian copper mines and gives examples of some interesting developments during the last five or six years. It discusses the effect of hangingwall subsidence and the methods used to combat rock pressure on working areas.INTRODUCTIONAll producing mines on the Northern Rhodesian Copperbelt have large ore reserves and are designed for high rates of production. The three mines (Mufulira, Rhokana Corporation, and Roan Antelope) where sub-level open stoping is used, hoist from 250,000 to over 400,000 short tons of ore a month so that any stoping method used must be adaptable to concentrated' mining.
