Once the draw process has begun in a block cave, it is very difficult to identify which regions of the cave have successfully propagated, where the caved material is flowing from and where it is flowing to. The uncertainty around cave flow increases as the cave is drawn and can be further compounded by poor draw control practices. These uncertainties make it difficult to plan effective draw strategies to control dilution, as flow model predictions tend to gradually diverge from the actual state of the cave. There have been documented occasions where observed caving phenomena, such as muck pile surface rilling, could not be reproduced with the cave flow models of the time. The ultimate consequence of cave flow uncertainty is generally manifest as higher dilution and lower grades.In order to measure the real-time flow of caved material within an active block cave, CRC Mining and Elexon have developed, together with Rio Tinto, a cave flow monitoring system called Cave Tracker, which is being trialled at Argyle Diamond Mine (ADM) in Western Australia. The Cave Tracker system at ADM comprises electronic ‘beacons’ that have been installed down long HQ diameter drill holes located above the extraction level. As the cave-back propagates and the rock mass fragments, beacons are released into the muck pile and flow along with the caved material to the drawpoints below. At Argyle, the beacons are configured to emit a signal every three days. These signals are picked up by detectors installed on the extraction and undercut levels, allowing the positions of the beacons to be determined.By examining the real-time material flow in different regions of the cave, flow mechanisms can be better defined. Draw control strategies can then be actively tailored to manage the current state of the cave. Thus, previously undetectable indications of excessive rilling, rapid cave propagation, cave stall, air gaps and dilution entry can now be identified early and assessed continuously as the cave progresses. THE world's largest known oil deposit lies in northern Alberta. In fact, according to government estimates, the famous so-called 'tar sands' of the Athabaska region contain several times as much oil as all the other proved reserves of the world. S. C. Ells, of the Department of Mines and Resources, who has been the Dominion Government's authority on the oil sands since 1913, has estimated the minimum content of the deposits at 100 billion barrels(!). C. P. Bowie, of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, has published an estimate of 250 billion barrels(2). ?In comparison, the latest authoritative estimate of the proved oil-field reserves of the world is less than 35 billion barrels(3). Out of this tremendous total, perhaps 500 million barrels are commercially available at present-day costs and prices; the remainder must be considered a latent reserve to be used when development costs are materially lower and petroleum prices materially higher than they now are. Mean-while, the 500-million-barrel portion presently available contains more oil than has been found in all the rest of Canada, and constitutes one of Canada's great mineral resources. Although these deposits have been known to white men since 1788, when Peter Pond, the explorer, found the Indians stewing the oil out of the sand and mixing it with spruce pitch to caulk their canoes, they are only now coming into commercial production. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the deposits, their oil content, their present development, and the possibilities that seem to lie immediately ahead. For the sake of completeness and clarity, the writer has not hesitated to use or to paraphrase material that he has previously published elsewhere in discussing various aspects of the oil sands.

This project had as its objective the experimental investigation of water capsule production utilizing the Southwest Research Institute's submerged nozzle encapsulation apparatus (U.S. Patent 3,389,194). Initial efforts on this project involved nozzle configuration and shell formulation optimization. The shell formulation developed on a prior program was modified during the course of the project to obtain the best balance of capsule breakage resistance and water retention. Subsequent effort centered on determining operating conditions which would produce the best quality capsules for each candidate shell formulation as determined by laboratory tests. Some preliminary work was done to increase the production capacity of the encapsulation equipment. The program was extended with major emphasis concerned with scale-up studies of capsule production capacity and the treatment of problems associated with grouting cartridge fabrication. During the course of the program, water-containing capsules were produced which have good long-term water retention, block resistance and adequate strength. Using a single-nozzle design, a production capacity of 15.9kg (35 pounds) per hour was demonstrated to give acceptable capsules based on initial results.

Codelco’s Salvador Project has been operating a block/panel caving mine for more than 50 years. This underground mining method dynamically mixes the ore and dilution. As a result, forecasting grades is difficult and achieving 100 per cent extraction of the reserves is practically impossible. A substantial volume of the ore mixed with dilution becomes remnant ore and remains to be subsequently extracted.A potential open pit mine is under evaluation at Codelco’s Salvador Project, which includes the extraction of remnant ore post-block caving extraction. An effective methodology has been implemented to estimate what is left behind once the underground mine has closed. A new mixing method using the Cellular Automata (Alfaro and Saavedra, 2004) approach has been used to allow estimation of the remnant ore with a sufficient level of confidence to be included as part of the open pit reserve.A remnant block model is created using elements such as in situ block model, drawpoint layouts, historical production records and the drawpoint extraction. Using this information, simulations of the extraction of the mine by month from 1959 to 2019 were completed, using different mixing scenarios and trying to replicate the tonnage and grade extracted.Finally, the remnant block model is categorised using a score card with four inputs to assess the risk of the estimation of this material into a category class (measured, indicated and inferred).CITATION:Villa, D and Farías, F, 2016. The Yanacocha Project is the first foreign investment in Peruvian mining since Cuajone (1976). Three years after the project began, it has become the largest producer of gold from heap leach operations in the world and the top producer in Latin America. The success of Minera Yanacocha (MYSA) opens a new chapter in Peruvian mining with the exploitation of its widely spread gold deposits and has attracted the interest of foreign investors in Peru's ample mineral resources. Construction began on August 1, 1992 and after twelve months of arduous work, the first gold bar was poured on August 7, 1993 from ore from the Carachugo mine. In 1993, Minera Yanacocha produced 81,000 ounces of gold and 304,000 ounces in 1994 (40% above budget). Production is expected to exceed 500,000 ounces in 1995 with the start-up of operations in the Maqui Maqui mine. This paper presents a summary of MYSA's experiences during its first two years of operations in the areas of mining, ore processing, environmental protection, loss control and community assistance. The paper also shows that MYSA's successes are not only due to the richness of the deposit, but also to the combination of a number of factors basic to the project's success, such as: an economic policy favoring investment in Peru, the availability of highly qualified local personnel to facilitate the transfer of technology from the United States and the desire and determination of the partners to carry the project forward in an initial atmosphere of uncertainty and terrorism.

A projected image is not always a true representation of a situation, or indeed an industry. This is often the case of the mining and minerals industry, which has frequently been portrayed in a negative light with a male dominance stigma attached. However, these issues can be combated for both the industry and its future, current undergraduate students, through undergraduate industry experience. In particular, vacation work enables female students to dispel many myths surrounding the industry and realise that the mining and minerals field offers career development for both genders. This paper will discuss how vacation work enables students to make important career decisions even before they have graduated. Industry experience provides undergraduates with the opportunity to gain practical knowledge relevant to their field of study. Additionally it allows students to observe the nature of the industry and the sacrifices necessary to advance careers. The prior insights into an industry are relevant to all students, but particularly female students, who might otherwise be dissuaded from a career in mining. This paper is written from the perspective of two female undergraduate students studying Mining and Minerals Processing Engineering.

Bench-scale test methods were developed by the Bureau of Mines for use by the Department of Transportation in the classification of solid and liquid oxidizers. A burning rate test is recommended for evaluating the fire hazard of solid inorganic oxidizers when mixed with a red oak sawdust as the reference combustible. A spontaneous ignition test is proposed for evaluating liquid and solid inorganic oxidizers which may decompose violently or ignite spontaneously when unmixed or mixed with the wood sawdust under unconfined conditions. Test results are compared for various representative oxidizers and a classification system is proposed for use in the government transportation regulations.

A molten metal granulator was designed and fabricated at the U.S. Dept. of Energy, Albany Research Center, for granulation of precious metal-bearing alloys and slags. The system was designed to safely granulate a metal alloy at a temperature of up to 1,600°C at a rate of roughly 50 kg of alloy per minute. The primary water jet was supplied by a 18.6-kW, 600 liter per minute pump which provided approximately 600 kg of water per minute through the primary jet. Two 3.7-kW, 150 liter per minute auxiliary pumps provided additional wash water to wet the granulation trough through 4 secondary jets, which were placed at either side of the primary jet. The water supply was closed-loop, including a 37,850-liter supply tank and 22,710-liter recovery tank. Magnetic separators and particulate filters were included for collection of the finest fraction of the granulation product, which cleaned the water sufficiently for continuous recycle.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the more significant coalbeds in Monongalia County, W. Va. It is one of a Bureau of Mines series planned to determine coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. Over 9.5 million tons of coal was produced in Monongalia County in 1957, of which more than 7 million tons was cleaned mechanically in 8 cleaning plants. On January I, 1954 the Bureau of Mines estimated that 1,576 million tons of recoverable coal remained in the county in beds 28 inches or more thick.

The Pascua Lama Project is situated on the border of Chile and Argentina at an elevation of 4,800 m. The ore contains gold, silver and copper, and an initial milling production rate of 33,000 t/d is planned. The mineralogy of this deposit is unusual. The ore is hard and abrasive, and it contains a complex array of sulphate minerals, such as chalcanthite, jarosites and alunites. The sulphides are predominantly enargite and pyrite. A novel flowsheet has therefore been developed, which includes dry grinding and ore washing to remove and then neutralize the soluble salts, prior to flotation, cyanide leaching and Merrill-Crowe recovery of the precious metals. These metallurgical issues and challenges associated with plant design and construction in the high and remote Andes Mountains make this a particularly challenging project.

A method has been developed for determining the relative water wet-tability (fraction of the surface wet by water) of porous media. This method involves the adsorption of methylene blue dye from an aqueous solution onto the solid surfaces of rock contacted by the injected dye solution. Experiments on Berea snndstone cores have shown that water-wet cores adsorb a large amount of dye from solution. In oil-wet cores, however, the injected aqueous dye solution is prevented from contacting the adsorptive surfuces by a film of oil and virtually no dye is adsorbed. This method was tested by experiments on mixtures of water-wet and oil-wet sand. Using the dye adsorption method, it was possible to determine quantitatively the fraction of water-wet and oil-wet sarzd in such mixtures. The dye adsorption test is readily applied to determinitrg the relative water wettability of fresh oilfield cores. The cores are not extracted before testing. Observed values of the wettability of field cores tested to date have varied from 100 to 6 per cent water wet. INTR OD UCTIO N Recent articles1 ' have emphasized the important role that wettability plays in almost all phases of reservoir rock behavior. It has been shown that wettability has a profound effect on the interstitial water saturation, residual oil saturation, capillary pressure, relative permeability, waterflood behavior, and resistivity index of oilfield cores. A quantitative investiga- tion of the effect of wettability on these core properties is severely handicapped by the lack of a simple technique for measuring the wettability of a porous medium. If such a technique were available, it would provide investigators with a means of gaining insight into the distribution of phases within a core. A number of qualitative methods of estimating wettability are known. These include contact angle measurements, flotation tests and studies of displacement pressure: imbibition7 and relative permeability data.' Using these tests, it is usually possible to classify a core as water-wet, oil-wet, or some intermediate degree of wettability. One recently proposed method involving measurement of nuclear magnetic relaxatione offers promise of determining quantitatively the fractional wettability of cores. The equipment is rather elaborate and necessary treatment of the cores before testing probably alters the natural wettability. This latter point also applies to most of the cited qualitative methods. This paper presents a new technique for determining water wettability of cores; it is based on measurements of the dye adsorption capacity of the core. This method has the advantage of requiring relatively simple equipment and involves minimum handling of the core before testing. It is important to distinguish between the various concepts of wettability referred to in the literature. The term "wetting" is defined by Bartell as that phenomenon which occurs when a solid and liquid phase come in contact in any manner so as to form a solid-liquid interface. A preferentially water-wet solid is defined by Jennings in terms of the advancing contact angle in the solid water-oil systems. Brown and Fatt regard fractional wettability as the fraction of the total surface area that is preferentially oil-wet or water-wet. However, none of these definitions adequately describes the type wettability measured by the dye test. This calls for the introduction of a new term, "relative water wettability", which we define as the fraction of the total surface area of a core contacted by injected water. DESCRIPTION OF METHOD The ability of a porous medium (especially the clays) to adsorb large quantities of surfactants, dyes, etc., is well known. It is reasonable to assume that a substance can be adsorbed from solution onto a solid surface only if the solution contacts the surface. In this connection Shapiro" has shown by experiments on silica gel that completely dry gel will adsorb methyl red dye from a benzene solution. On the other hand, if a film of water more than several molecules thick is present on the silica gel, the adsorption capacity of the gel for the dye is drastically reduced. Thus, a study of the dye adsorption capacity of cores should give some clue as to the fluid distribution on the surface of the core. TEST OF METHOD As a qualitative check on this theory, dye adsorption tests were run on similar Berea sandstone cores (Table 1, Cores 1-5). Cores saturated initially with water and flooded with 0.01 per cent aqueous methylene blue adsorbed 0.58 mg dye/gm of core. Similar cores saturated initially with water, driven to irreducible water with oil, and then flooded with the same dye solution also adsorbed 0.58 mg dye/gm of core. Another core, treated with a 5 per cent Dri-Film solution, dried and saturated with oil (Soltrol) adsorbed no dye when the dye solution was injected. These tests confirm

During the last several years, implementation of trusses, in lieu of wood cribs, has been successful for supplemental tailgate support in the Pittsburgh seam. This paper reviews, the truss support system provided by the new high strength 0.6" tensioned cable truss, which is now also being used in cribless tailgates. Cable loading and roof deformation were monitored to evaluate roof and floor performance. The test results indicate that the cable truss system successfully controlled the roof and floor during the first and second panel extraction. This paper will describe the advantages of cable trusses and their load transfer mechanism as well as mine evaluation.

This is the third report published by the Bureau of Mines concerning the washability of Black Creek coal. Both of the former reports5/6/ dealt with the Black Creek coal at the Bradford mine, Dixiana, Ala., near the northeastern extremity of the Warrior field, whereas the present report is based on float-and-sink tests of coal from what is presumably the Black Creek bed near the southern extremity of the field. Although the Yolande Coal & Coke Co., owners of the property at Yolanda No. 6 slope, consider this opening to be on the Black Creek bed, the authors do not feel that there is as yet positive proof that this correlation is correct. There has been little or no development of the Black Creek bed in the Yolande Basin in the past, and a posy-tine identification of the bed at Yolande No. o will have to await further exploration and development. The Yolande No. 6 is an exploration slope 3/4 mile north of Rockcastle, Ala. The slope is approximately 400 feet from top to bottom on a dip of 18° As fax as the authors can ascertain, coal has never been produced commercially from the Black Creek bed in the southwestern part of the Warrior field. Exploration work in the past has indicated that the Black Creek coal in. this area is extremely friable and high in sulfur. Extreme friability would naturally discourage its' use as a domestic and railroad fuel, and high sulfur content would be a disasvantage in its use for coking coal. The present study of this coal has been made with particular reference to sulfur elimination on the assumption that it would make a good coking coal provided enough of the sulfur could be eliminated by washing.

This paper describes the design of a wellfield to provide a water supply for a new mine in southern Africa. A hydrogeological investigation was conducted that included the drilling and test pumping of eight wells located within a highly jointed pyroxenite aquifer. The wellfield was designed using a simple probabilistic analysis. This approach allowed the variability of the aquifer parameters to be taken into account. A risk assessment analysis was then carried out to evaluate the level of assurance that a reliable water supply could be provided by the wellfield. The analysis was also used to assess the effects of supplementing the water supply by pumping from nearby flooded workings.

To understand why some companies excel in creating value, Jim Collins (2001) and a group of postgraduate business students engaged in a comprehensive, five-year research project. They examined 1,435 U.S. companies for more than 40 years, seeking those that made significant improvements in their financial performance over time. The distinctive pattern sought was: ?Fifteen-year cumulative stock returns at or below the general stock market, punctuated by a transition point, then cumulative returns at least three times the market over the next 15 years. ?The search identified 11 outperforming companies, all in different industries, that were called the ?good to great? companies. To contrast these companies with similar peers within the same industry, the search also selected a group of comparison companies that failed to make the leap from good to great. Collins then set out to examine the transition point. What distinguishing features did the good-to-great companies have that their industry counterparts did not? At the heart of the findings about these outstanding companies is what Collins refers to as the ?hedgehog concept? ? how to find the one big thing that the company must focus on. According to Collins, those who built the good-to-great companies were, to one degree or another, hedgehogs. Those who led the comparison companies tended to be foxes, never gaining the clarifying advantage of a hedgehog concept, being instead scattered, diffused and inconsistent. This insight is complemented by Peter Drucker (2004), an influential management guru, who asserts that the first question an effective executive should ask is: ?what needs to be done?? Asking this question and taking it seriously, he asserts, is crucial for managerial success; and that the answer almost always has more than one urgent task, but the effective leader only concentrates on one task. In this last respect, Drucker emphasizes: ?If they [executives] are among the sizeable minority who work best with a change of pace in the working day, they pick two tasks. I have never encountered an executive who is effective while tackling more than two tasks at a time.?

Aggregate resources consist of sand and gravel, and crushed stone. They are large-tonnage, bulk-minable mineral commodities that are used in construction and industrial activities (Tepordei, 1999, 2001).Rates of aggregate production, use and mine permit approval in the mid-Atlantic region differ by population density. These rates are influenced by economic and human factors, such as demand, costs, land availability and community opposition. In some areas, the local availability of aggregate is limited. This is due to the lack of suitable local source materials for aggregate, the loss of potential high-quality aggregate resource production sites by preemptive land development and restrictive zoning (resource sterilization), and the difficulty of developing and permitting production sites for aggregate.

"Abstract - Rare-element pegmatites may host several economic commodities, such as tantalum (Taoxide minerals), tin (cassiterite), lithium (ceramic-grade spodumene and petalite), and cesium (pollucite). Key geological features that are common to pegmatites in the Superior province of Ontario and Manitoba, Canada, and in other large tantalum deposits worldwide, can be used in exploration.An exploration project for rare-element pegmatites should begin with an examination of a regional geology map. Rare-element pegmatites occur along large regional-scale faults in greenschist and amphibolite facies metamorphic terranes. They are typically hosted by mafic metavolcanic or metasedimentary rocks, and are located near peraluminous granite plutons (A/CNK > 1.0). Once a peraluminous granite pluton has been identified, then the next step is to determine if the pluton is barren or fertile. Fertile granites have elevated rare element contents, Mg/Li ratio < 10, and Nb/Ta ratio < 8. They commonly contain blocky K-feldspar and green muscovite. Key fractionation indicators can be plotted on a map of the fertile granite pluton to determine the fractionation direction: presence of tourmaline, beryl, and ferrocolumbite; Mn content in garnet; Rb content in bulk K-feldspar; and Mg/Li and Nb/Ta ratios in bulk granite samples. Pegmatite dikes with the most economic potential for Li-Cs-Ta deposits occur the greatest distance (up to 10 km) from the parent granite.Metasomatized host rocks are an indication of a nearby rare-element pegmatite. Metasomatic aureoles can be identified by their geochemistry: elevated Li, Rb, Cs, B, and F contents; and by their mineralogy: presence of tourmaline, (Rb, Cs)-enriched biotite, holmquistite, muscovite, and rarely garnet.Once a pegmatite dike has been located, the next step is to assess its potential to contain Ta mineralization. Pegmatites with the highest degree of fractionation (and thus the most economic potential for Li-Cs-Ta) contain blocky K-feldspar with >3,000 ppm Rb, K/Rb < 30, and >100 ppm Cs; and coarsegrained green muscovite with >2,000 ppm Li, >10,000 ppm Rb, >500 ppm Cs, and >65 ppm Ta. Pegmatites with Ta mineralization usually contain Li-rich minerals (e.g., spodumene, petalite, lepidolite, elbaite, amblygonite, and lithiophilite) and may contain Cs-rich minerals (e.g., pollucite, Cs-rich beryl). The ore minerals of Ta are commonly manganotantalite, manganocolumbite, wodginite, and microlite; Ta-rich cassiterite is also commonly present. Tantalum mineralization tends to occur in albitic aplite, mica-rich (lepidolite, cleavelandite ± lepidolite), and spodumene/petalite pegmatite zones."

In view of the limited reserves of good-quality coking coals in South Africa, Iscor has been involved in direct reduction since the middle sixties. Since the early seventies, its interest in direct reduction was stimulated further by a swing towards&apos; continuous casting, which, in turn, contributed to a shortage of the scrap supply for electric-arc-furnace (EAP) steelmaking. Rock engineering The First International Conference-Rock Enginet:ring and Excavation in an Urban Environmentorganized by The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy and the Hong Kong Section of the Institution, in association with the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, will be held in Hong Kong from 23rd to 28th February, 1986. SPOTLIGHT on Gold Fields National Engineering Awards For the Gold Fields Foundation National Engineering Awards, each university affiliated to the South African Federation of University Engineering Students (S.A.F.U.E.S.) selected a candidate who, in their opinion, presented the most outstanding design project in their final year during 1984.

The transportation of solids by pipeline is not new. In 1891 a United States patent broadly covering a method of pumping coal with water was granted to W. C. Andrews. His pilot plant was constructed on what is now the site of the New- York Public Library in Manhattan. His process was applied to pumping coal mine waste back into the worked out portion of coal mines. On October 26, 1967, the world&apos;s first long distance iron ore slurry line was put into service by Savage River Mines. The commissioning of this 5.0 million dollar installation climaxed three years of development, testing, and construction and proved the Company&apos;s faith in pioneering&apos; this unique transportation method for iron ore. This paper will discuss some of the more pertinent items in connection with that three-year period. Also to be discussed will be the operation of this line during the past eleven months.
