"Transalloys is a silicomanganese (SiMn) producer located in South Africa, and uses only local manganese ores to produce SiMn alloy. The plant operates five open submerged arc furnaces (SAFs) with an annual capacity of 180 000 t of saleable SiMn.Maintaining tap-holes is critical for effective furnace operation, allowing proper drainage of the furnace with minimal operator interference. Using a claygun and drill arrangement installed at each furnace, tapping occurs every four hours. Tap-holes are maintained through mickey replacement and brick repairs. Three furnaces have SiC tap-holes and two have graphite tap-holes.This paper gives a review of SAF operation, furnace and tap-hole design, daily tapping operation, and maintenance practices for repairing tap-holes.IntroductionDefining tap-hole life cycle, Steenkamp et al., (2016) highlighted four main steps: installation during furnace relines, day-to-day operations, tap-hole maintenance, and tap-hole repair. The authors argued that the design of the tap-hole area should allow for all four stages in the tap-hole life-cycle. Design principles for each stage were presented using silicomanganese (SiMn) production as a case study. Here we present a further analysis of the case study by providing practical examples of how the tap-hole life-cycle is managed at Transalloys during the design, operation, and maintenance of submerged arc furnaces (SAFs) applied in the production of SiMn.BackgroundTransalloys is the largest producer of SiMn in Africa. Its smelter complex is based outside the town of eMalahleni, in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa. Transalloys was commissioned in the mid- 1960s as a high- and low-carbon ferrochromium plant based on the Perrin process. In 1967 the plant was converted to SiMn production because of constraints in the ferrochrome market (Basson, Curr, and Gericke, 2007; Bezemer, 1995). Today, the installed production capacity is 180 000 t of SiMn annually. Plant operations consists of five SAFs (see ratings in Table I), operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (including maintenance), involving 280 permanent employees, with up to 120 contract employees on site at any given time."

"A successful procedure for the recovery of a valuable product from weathered tank-bottom settlings has been developed in the laboratories of the Bureau of lines and used in a field pilot plant. These heavy emulsion settlings, generally regarded by the industry as waste material, have usually been drained into open pits or storage ponds and eventually destroyed.Laboratory examination of the waste material shows it to consist essentially of a ""water-in-oil"" emulsion containing a considerable volume of congealed ""paraffin."" This paraffin is mainly high-melting-point wax; known in the industry as microcrystalline wax, for which there is an increasing demand.Because of the physical properties of this wax, the tank-bottom settlings are not responsive to conventional methods used for demulsifying ordinary crude-oil emulsions.The work upon which this report is based was conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with -the Kansas State. Board of Health and with special cooperative agreements-with the Cities Service Oil Co, Bartlesville, Okla., and the Bareco Oil Co,. Barnsdall, Okla. "The basic objectives of mine roadways are to provide sufficient cross sections in order to meet the needs of accommodation of equipment, transport, personnel travel and ventilation. However, many roadways become damaged to the extent of needing maintenance, generally dinting, and in some cases requiring re-ripping. The damaging of a roadway is a result of several factors including geological properties of surrounding strata, method of roadway formation, support systems and so on. Among these factors, strata conditions play important effects on the stability of roadways and other mining activities. Weak rocks cause excessive roadway closures, and water softens some rocks and worsens the closure problem. In Indonesia, over 250 Mt of coal is now produced from almost surface mines. In the near future, some coal must be mined from underground. Unfortunately, the mechanical properties of coal measures rocks are not so good to open underground mines. In this paper, a scientific discussion on the effect of water on the stability of roadways is given on the basis of results obtained by means of in-situ investigation and laboratory tests both in Japan and Indonesia."

Through the courtesy of the State Department, the Bureau of Mines has received a compreensive report on the jede industry of Burma, pre- pared by American Consul Winfield H. Scott, Rangoon, Burza. This mater- ial is the main basis for the present circular, although free use also has been made of reports on the jede industry in China and Germany by consular officers in those countries, to whom footnote credit is given. The word "jade" is said to be derived from the Spanish "piedra de ijada" (hijada) meaning, literally, "stone of the side," as jade was supposed to cure pains in the side; nephrite (a jade mineral) was named from the Greek word meaning kidney, because it was formerly warn as a re- medy for kidney diseases. To the Burmeso, jade is known as "Kyauksein," or green stone, and to the Chinese, all varieties of the material are referred to as "Yu" or "Yu-chi", According to Confucius, jade was symbolical of. justice, harmony, intelligence, and humanity, and the Chinese of today believe that by using ornaments made of this stone, the wearer is. protected from the "evil eye" as well as from diser.se. Ornaments of carved jade were known to the ancient civilizations of Mexico and Peru and to the peoples of other sections. of Central and South America, Jade ornaments also have been found in the lake dwellings of Switzerland and in Crete; thile in China, as far back as the Chou dynasty (B. C. 1122 B. C. 255) it was used in the production of various classes of precious vessels and as insignia of rank.

The Ohaaki Rhyolite and the Rautiwiri Breccia are two volcanic units occurring in the shallow and deep parts of the Broadlands-Ohaaki geothermal system. Alteration of these units by chloride waters results in distinct mineral assemblages that also have distinct whole rock compositions. The Ohaaki rhyolite is altered to an assemblage dominated by quartz, adularia, illite and pyrite as a consequence of silica, potassium and sulfur metasomatism. Locally, these rocks contain up to 0.5 ppm Au. The Rautiwiri Breccia by contrast is altered to an assemblage dominated by albite, adularia, quartz, illite, chlorite and pyrite in association with modest sodium metasomatism. Whole rock oxygen isotope compositions of altered rocks range between 3.3 and 7.5 ë, and are generally lower compared to their fresh rock equivalents having values of 9.5 to 10.6 ë; the result is broad pattern of lower values with increasing alteration intensity.

Under the Heavy Metals Program, investigations were conducted at the old Badger dill placer mini in Nevada County California to collect data and information regarding drilling and sampling methods and deposit characteristics. The studies contributed to a team effort by five Bureau of Mines research groups to develop new or improved placer mining technology in the Tertiary gold-bearing channel gravel of northern California. This report describes the techniques used and the results obtained in the sampling and drilling stage of deposit delineation studies that were conducted by the Denver Mine Systems Engineering Group. Sampling included the collection and processing of 400 tons of largo and small volume samples from drill holes, underground workings, surface pits, and blast hole rounds. A total of 355 samples averaging 2,296 pounds per sample provided reasonably accurate data for analysis of the gold distribution. These studies indicate that the bulk of the gold is within 40 foot of bedrock in stacked, lenticular zones of cemented gravel that are largely confined to the relatively narrow, meandering course of the deepest portion of the bedrock channel. Drilling studies involved the testing of three types of truck-mounted drills including rotary, bucket and vibratory, none of which proved to be a completely versatile tool for sampling quickly and reliably both consolidated and unconsolidated gravel.

The Golden Ridges Mine, one of the properties of New Guinea Goldfields Limited, is situated on the right bank of Nami Creek, not far from the township of Wau, in the Territory of New Guinea.The property is somewhat unique, in that the goldbearing ore-body occurs in the form of a flat seam-like deposit lying on a volcanic breccia, and covered with a mantle of overburden of decomposed porphyry. The overburden varies in thickness up to a maximum of about 65 ft.The ratio of overburden to ore is about 3 to 1. The practice developed is to strip the overburden by hydraulicking, and to mine the exposed ore under open-cut conditions, blasting to a vertical face, and using electrically operated scraper hoists for conveying the broken ore to the mill bins.The stripping of the overburden involves the boring of well-drill holes, blasting the holes and then hydraulicking the shattered material.

"Abstract Deep mixing method has been employed increasingly in recent years as a countermeasure against subsoil liquefaction. Column-type solidification, however, has been thought to have little effect as a liquefaction countermeasure, because the shear deformation of unimproved soil between the columns cannot be reduced. In recent years, experimental results have been reported that imply that solidified columns can reduce the shear deformation of unimproved soil around them. A new arrangement has been proposed to mitigate lateral flow induced by liquefaction. In this study, a series of dynamic centrifuge model tests was conducted to verify the lateral flow resistance of stabilized columns. The results indicate that stabilized columns can reduce the lateral flow of liquefied ground if the column displacement and the column head rotation are restricted. This paper concludes that it is important to restrict the displacement and the rotation of the column head by surface improvement to mitigate the lateral flow of liquefied ground.INTRODUCTIONDeep mixing method has been employed increasingly in recent years as a countermeasure against subsoil liquefaction. The solidified body formed by the deep mixing method is usually block or lattice shape, composed of solidified columns that overlap each other horizontally. Lattice-type solidification has been shown to be effective as a liquefaction countermeasure despite the presence of unimproved soil inside the lattice wall, because the shear deformation of the interior soil is restrained by the wall (Suzuki et al., 1989). On the other hand, it has been thought that column-type solidification cannot reduce shear deformation of unimproved soil around columns, because the displacement of a solidified column is less restricted than that of a lattice wall. Column-type solidification has been reported to have little effect as a liquefaction countermeasure, but to be superior in terms of construction cost and applicability around existing underground structures (Koga et al., 1986). However, there are experimental results implying that solidified columns have reduced the shear deformation of unimproved soil and mitigated its liquefaction (Yasuda et al., 2003; Tanaka et al., 2003). Yamamoto et al. (2006) conducted dynamic analyses of ground improved with lattice- and column-type solidification. Their results showed that column-type solidification with an improvement ratio of more than 35% reduces excess pore water pressure generated by earthquakes. Furthermore, the new column arrangement shown in Figure 1(a) has been proposed to mitigate lateral flow induced by liquefaction. It was developed and has been verified using dynamic model testing in a 1 g field (Takahashi et al., 2010a; 2010b; 2013; Towhata et al., 2010). The stabilized columns in this configuration interrupt lateral flow in any direction, unlike those placed in square and triangular arrangements."

Smoke abatement is a subject of which fuel technology, although absolutely essential, is only a part. Its successful accomplishment starts and ends with human factors that must be given thorough consideration; between this "start" and "end" fuel technology is applied. Smoke abatement usually starts from the desire of some person or persons to be free from uncleanness caused by the stack of someone else and ends with the sincere desire of the operator of the fuel-burning equipment to maintain a clear stack. Although "smoke abatement been discussed for many years, it is only recently that the public has been mindful of such expressions as "air pollution" and "air hygiene." The subject has duel in common with that of supplying pure water but is more complicated. The public desires pure water, expects pure water, is willing to pay for pure water, and expects to continue to pay for it indefinitely; it is a development of civilization. It is doubtless correct to say, however, that people in general do not et realize the detriment of air pollution to their well-being or give the question enough serious consideration. This is illustrated by the fact that in city smoke abatement it is the mass of small householders that sins the most and is the hardest to handle. It is rather difficult to assemble a group of people in a room without the air becoming contaminated with smoke. Smoke abatement will lag with the lack of desire for pure air - probably the biggest human factor involved in its accomplishment.

This paper follows that of the Milos Conf, 2002 and examines the collection and reporting of SDIs in the industrial minerals industry in Europe. It compares the characteristics of the GRI Reporting Guidelines, with its Metals and Mining Sector Supplement with those of the EU DG Enterprise Scheme, launched in 2001. The particular issue of SME's and companies which are not publicly traded is examined. The pros and cons of participating in such schemes is a central theme of the paper. The paper concludes that there and many business benefits for these companies in participating and submitting their data. The European Commission Scheme is strongly recommended for companies in the sector which are SME's and not-publicly traded as well as large firms who are listed on European Stock Exchanges.

[An economic trading region made up of 22 eastern Washington, northern Idaho, and western Montana counties, with Spokane, Washington as the central place, was defined for this study. modeling system with the, 1985 county database was to create an Input/Output based model of the regional economy. The leading ice, with respect to income, employment, value of exports, and total industry output are shown for each county and the region. The value of total industry output from natural resource based industries is also shown for each county and the region. Interindustry transactions, final demand, and value added components for the region are shown in the Regional Gross Flows Table. The total gross output for the region is valued at $36.7 billion. Total industry output for the region is $18.1 billion. The region provides $5.4 billion in income to a work force of 286,000. Spokane County, Washington accounts for about 50 percent of the regional total industry output, income, and employment. Both Spokane County and then as a whole produce about 80 percent of the total industry output for final demand with remaining 20 percent going to intermediate inputs for further production. Spokane County exports about 43 percent of its total output while 35 of the regional output is exported. Exports account for more 50 percent of the total in 18 of the 22 counties within the region. With the ever-increasing price of diesel fuel, accompanied by the popular topic of carbon taxes and greenhouse gas emissions, the mining industry is looking to industry specialists for assistance. The benefits of a no-idle policy reach far beyond carbon reduction and fuel savings, ranging from decreased maintenance to increased engine life. With products like battery-powered ac systems and diesel-fired heaters, going noidle is easier today than ever before. With both systems being manufactured to withstand the harsh environments of the mining industry, the end user will see a seamless change from conventional, inefficient belt-driven systems to future, standalone mobile equipment HVAC.The history of GHGs and climate changeIn 1896, Svante Arrhenius first claimed that the combustion of fossil fuels may eventually result in enhanced global warming, but not until 1955 did Gilbert Plass draw global attention to global warming by summarizing that adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere would intercept infrared radiation and thus warm the earth. Then in the early 1960s, Charles Keeling developed modern technology to produce concentration curves for atmospheric CO2 (Fig.1).In 1988, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was founded by the United Nations after acknowledgment of a rising global annual temperature. The IPCC consists of more than 2,500 scientific and technical experts from more than 60 countries. Because climate change could not be solved by a single country, the Kyoto Protocol was negotiated in 1998, requiring all participating countries to reduce their GHG emissions by at least 5 percent from the 1990 levels. The Protocol was signed by 186 countries in 2001 (since then several countries have retreated from the agreement, including the United States). In 2002, the Bush administration announced a policy for climate change relying on domestic, voluntary actions to reduce the "greenhouse gas intensity" of the United States economy by 18 percent by 2012. The U.S. still attends the Kyoto conference of parties (COPs) but does not participate in negotiations, as it is not bound by its terms."

This Bureau of Mines report reviews in detail the foundry coke situation in the United States in 1975. It discusses intrinsic production problems and identifies opportunities for modifying operating practices so that the quality and yield of foundry coke can be enhanced without unnecessary investment in new equipment. Major topics include operating data and attendant practices and problems, the relationship of carbonization phenomena to coke quality and yield, environ- mental impacts of foundry coke plant operations, suggested research and development opportunities, and data on components of oven charges and on foundry coke production and shipments.

"AbstractThe Thames Water Tideway Tunnels programme involves the upgrade of London’s combined sewer and storm water system. The first section is the Lee Tunnel between the Beckton Sewage Treatment Works (STW) and the Abbey Mills Pumping Station. This will intercept the overflows currently discharging to the River Lee and has the capacity to store and transfer 350,000m3 of storm water and sewage. The project required 4 shafts and a 6.9km 7.2m diameter tunnel. The shafts are some of the largest ever constructed in the UK, with diaphragm walls up to 98m deep and 1800mm thick. As a result of the innovative methods of diaphragm wall design and construction adopted the 4 very large and deep shafts were able to be excavated and completed safely, with minimal water ingress and with extremely high quality.MVB, a joint venture of Morgan Sindall, Vinci Construction Grands Projets and Bachy Soletanche are delivering the £635m contract with Thames Water’s Project Management Team in a collaborative manner under an NEC contract. Mott MacDonald, Morgan Sindall UnPS & Bachy Soletanche are acting as designers.Some of the important advances in diaphragm walling made included:??Diaphragm wall design to both EC2 & EC7 taking into considering the assessment of chalk stiffness, high hoop stresses, large multiple openings and non-axisymmetric loadings.??Formation of shafts as a faceted circle from a series of overlapping panels, with primary panels up to 7.2m wide demanding concrete volumes up to 1300m3 be poured in one go. Overlapping secondary single bite panels cut into the grade C50/60 concrete.??Excavation of the full geological stratigraphy of London making bentonite management complex.??Panel verticality of 1:300 required over the full depth. The results achieved this and in many cases exceeded expectations with some panels coming in at up to 1 in 800 with the majority at 1 in 400 to 1 in 500. The project is also the first in the Soletanche Bachy Group to take data from the ultrasonic drilling monitor used to check the verticalty in electronic format in order to create 3D CAD as-built drawings.??Each diaphragm wall panel was reinforced over its full depth. Up to 18 separate pieces of reinforcing cage had to be installed in primary panels. Cages underwent a full range of temporary works designs to check that lifting, splicing and placing could all be undertaken safely. Fibreglass was used in the tunnel portals in the shafts to ease breakthroughs."

Information on total estimated uranium reserves and domestic requirements have been collected, A survey has been made on the possibilities of recovery of uranium from low grade and complex ore deposits, e.g., marine phosphorites, shales, coal, sea water, etc. In order to assess the potential for uranium recovery from uraniferous phosphorites, available thermodynamic data of uranium minerals, compounds and aqueous species have been collected. The existence of uranium complexes with chloride, fluoride, carbonate, phosphate, sulfate, etc., in ground waters have been evaluated at different pH's. There seems a great need to study the relative stability of these complexes in order to judge the applicability of solution mining technology for selective leaching of uranium from phosphorites. A typical flow-sheet demonstrating recovery of uranium from wet-process phosphoric acid has been included in this report. Some essential features of the economics of uranium recovery from uraniferous phosphorites have been briefly considered and recommendation have been made for further studies.

Although, for about a half-century the percentage of coal production provided through strip mining has steadily increased, recent trends indicate that a peak in percentage (not tonnage) is being approached, principally because of the decline in economic adrantage enjoyed by strip mining compared to underground mining. Factors contributing to the decline are the decrease in the margin of advantage in manpower requirements held by strip mining; an increase in depth and volume of overhurden, requiring larger equipment and capital investment; increasing lack of reserve land blocks large enough to support extensive strip mining operations; more stringent legislation for reclamation of stripped land, with increasingly higher costs of such reclamation; and the increasing costs of land surface rights for strip mining. Already there has been a peak and suhsequent decline in relative importance of strip mining insome major Eastern coal-producing states; trends indicate that a peaking for the whole Eastern region is on the way. Although, in the West the pressures are less severe, they will, nevertheless, reduce to an increasing degree the advantage that strip mining has possessed. For about half a century, strip mining has been providing an ever-increasing share of total coal output in the United States, and in the past 30 years this share has grown from less than 8% to 33.7%, as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 1 also shows that strip mining is gaining faster in the West than in the East. From 1961 to 1967, output from strip mines grew 63.6 million toqs, or 52.2%. Certainly there is nothing in such performance to indicate any peaking in the level of strip coal-mine production. But the fact is that, if not in actual tonnage, strip mining appears to be reaching its peak in relative importance, at least east of the Mississippi River. And the area east of the Mississippi provides 90.0% of the strip and 94.9% of the total coal production of the nation. The relative economic advantage which spurred strip mining's growth for a third of a century has been diminishing markedly in recent years. Fig. 2 shows evidence of this decline. From 1947 until 1961, strip tonnage output remained fairly stable, at the end of the period showing only a 12.5% decline. Meanwhile, underground coal production fell 44.5%. As the result of the greater decline in underground coal, strip coal in 1961 furnished 30.3% of the total coal produced, compared to only 22.1% in 1947. In the succeeding six years, however, underground coal output increased by 76.5 million tons, while strip output increased only 63.6 million. Further evidence of the strengthening of underground coal's relative position — or if you will, the weakening of strip coal's position — can be found in the major coal stripping states: Illinois, West Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and West Virginia, which in 1966 provided 80% of the nation's strip coal. Fig. 3 shows what has been happening in three states lying in the Appalachian field and in the total output of these three states. In the figure, the column height represents the output of coal mined by all methods. The number at the base of each column is the percentage mined by stripping. In Pennsylvania and Ohio, the percentage of strip mining increased between 1956 and 1961, but by 1966 had declined from the 1961 level. In West Virginia, a decline occurred during the first five years but was followed by a rise. In January 1968, Coal Age published an article listing the locations and capacities of new large mines in the planning and construction stages that would be operating by 1968-1971. Geometallurgical parameters are descriptions of the mineralogy and microstructure of the ore determining its mineralogical and microstructural characteristics. From a conditional geostatistical simulation of such properties, a processing model can compute recovery, equipment usage, processing costs, and thus the monetary value for mining and processing a block with certain processing parameters. The output can be used for optimising mining sequences or finding optimal processing parameters by solving the corresponding stochastic optimisation problem.The approach requires two properties of the simulation not provided by established geostatistical techniques:Many relevant geometallurgical parameters are from non-Euclidean statistical scales such as (mineral) compositions, (grain size) distribution, (grain) geometry, and (stratigraphic type) categorical, which might produce nonsensical values (for example, negative proportions, negative facies probablities, planar grains) when simulated with standard geostatistical techniques.Due to the nonlinearity of processing, the entire conditional distribution of the geometallurgical parameters is relevant, not only its mean and variance. The geostatistical simulation needs to reproduce the joint conditional distributions of all the geometallurgical parameters.The multipoint conditional geostatistical simulation technique discussed here allows for jointly simulating dependent spatial variables from various sample spaces. The technique combines an infill simulation, similar to the one used in multipoint geostatistics, with a new form of distributional regression to estimate conditional distributions of arbitrary scales from different information sources, including training images, training models and observed data. The distributional regression is based on a generalisation of logistic regression and is related to both Bayesian Maximum Entropy geostatistics and high order cumulants.The method ensures that simulated data reside in the set of possible values and honour the characteristics of the joint distribution to be reproduced.
