Conditions necessary to obtain optimum yield of useful products when coal is rapidly heated to extreme temperatures by laser irradiation were determined by the Bureau of Mines. Product distribution and yield were investigated as functions of several variables. Low-rank coals with high-volatile matter gave highest total gas yields. Medium-rank coals gave the highest yields of H2 and CA and low-rank coals gave highest yields of CO and C02. Macerals gave gases of approximately the same composition, but the total gas yield increased in the order fusinite, micrinite, vitrinite, and exinite. Total gas and C2H2 yields varied inversely with particle size. The addition of nominally inert gases such as Ar, He, N2 increased yields of H2, C2H2, and total gas. Metals such as nickel and platinum had little influence on the rate of coal decomposition. Total gas yield increased with total energy of irradiation, and the ratio of C2H2-CH4 increased with concentration of energy. A study was also made of the irradiation temperature, and a material balance was calculated.

"This paper presents results of a study undertaken to determinethe feasibility of mining plains overburdens with bucket wheel excavators. Based on extensive geotechnical testing of overburdens under study, the relations between material geotechnical properties and its cuttability were defined. The properties with the highest correlations to the cuttability werethen used to develop the material diggability classification. This classification may be used for identification of overburdens and coals mineable by bucket wheel excavators.IntroductionLow cost of mining and high productivity can be achieved when mining unconsolidated soils and soft rocks with bucket wheel excavators. As a result this mining equipment will likely be introduced into plains coal mines. At present there are plans to use a bucketwheel excavator (BWE) in at least one mine by the end of this decade. Unfortunately, the performance of a BWE deteriorates rapidly with the increasing strength of mined material. To avoid costly misapplication, material diggability must be defined in advance of an application (i.e. the force required at the cutting edges of BWE buckets must be quantified). Correct definition of material diggability permits reliable selection of a BWE, or may indicate unsuitability of this equipment for a particular application.The reported studyu i was undertaken to investigate the diggability of typical prairie overburdens and thus provide a guidance for likely future applications of bucketwheel equipment. Investigations concentrated on the parts of overburden most likely to create problems for a BWE mining. These are defined in Table 1. At present, thin layers of the two investigated materials (samples K and L) are mined by a BWE in an oil sand mine, after being loosened by blasting."

Geological examination of the underground workings of the Horne and Aldermac mines during the summer of 1927 has brought out the following facts: (1) That the ores tend to replace bodies of breccia or tuff rather than massive lava or dyke material; (2) That the faulting and folding at the Horne has had a pronounced effect in localizing the ore-bodies; (3) That there is a tendency in cert?-in cases for ore-bodies to be localized beneath gently dipping dykes, which acted as impervious roofs; (4) That there is a great difference in age between the chalcopyrite part of the ore-bodies and the pyrite-pyrrhotite portion. A statement of the development to date at the Aldermac mine is also included in the paper. ALDERMAC MINE The Aldermac property is made up of eight claims in the western half of Boischatel township, Quebec, including 747 acres in all. The mine itself is approximately three miles, 25 chains from the west boundary, and four miles, 55 chains from the north boundary, of the township.

"This paper describes an innovative method, used for the first time in India, for the construction of a 1.0metre-thick positive plastic concrete cut-off wall (CoW) at the upstream toe of the dam at the Kishanganga Hydro-Electric Project in Jammu & Kashmir- India. The extremely difficult bouldery geology with an overburden laden with very hard Panjal Volcanics (quartz, feldspar, muscovite and chlorite minerals) boulders of up to 0.8m to 1.8 metres in size with UCS of up to 265 MPa and the requirement of socketing the CoW into the underlying hard bedrock (UCS 265 MPa) for 1.50m made the choice for the excavation methodology critically difficult. After having evaluated several other existing methods – including hydromill trenchers – the Civil Contractor Hindustan Construction Company, in agreement with its Foundations Engineering Consultant (Ricerca e Sviluppo – Cantieri e Gestioni) opted for a two-stage construction method: firstly, preliminary full-depth drilling and “surgical” blasting with full-length inclinometer checking of borehole verticality to ensure the exact location of rock fracturing and fragmentation coincided with the required position and that it was vertical, notwithstanding efficient trenching into the bedrock of a nominal 1m by 1.5m section; and, secondly, excavation by using heavy duty mechanical rope grabs made locally and developed by the Consultant in collaboration with the Contractor. The details of the methodology and the salient construction data is presented and commented for the 33-metre deep CoW installed at a working platform elevation of 2364.50 m above sea level in a very remote area.BACKGROUNDThe Kishanganga Hydro Electric Project (KGHEP) is a ROR (run-of-the-river) project is located on the Kishanganga River some 140kms North-West of Srinagar, capital of Jammu & Kashmir State of India, for generating 330MW of power in a 90% dependable annual year. The key components of the project are: Concrete Face Rockfill Dam (CFRD), Chute Spillway, Plastic Concrete Cut-off Wall (CoW), Head Race Tunnel (HRT), Surge Shaft (SS), Inclined Pressure Shaft (PS), underground Power House and Transformer Hall, Tail Race Tunnel (TRT).The Power House Site is accessible throughout the year from Srinagar while the remote Dam Site, with its tortuous road climbing the Rajdan Pass at 3556m (11,667 ft) above sea level and several 20-tonne capacity Bailey bridges removed prior to snowfall, remains inaccessible for around 4 months between mid-November to mid-May due to winter and heavy snowfall - the only access is by helicopter, weather permitting. Temperature at the Dam Site drops down to minus 27degrees Celsius during winter, therefore, careful planning from the beginning was most essential for the successful delivery of the Project.This paper deals with the Cut-Off Wall construction which was performed, for the first time in India, adopting a “Drilling and Surgical Blasting” method. 1. The Pittsburgh bed is the most important bed in Brooke County and virtually the entire production of coal in the county comes from this bed. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 191 million short tons as of January 1, 1954. Of this total, 190 million short tons are in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

The following data cover a phase in the systematic testing of gold deposits which does not appear to have been specificalIy investigated.In boring either secondary or primary deposits, gold, by virtue of its high specific gravity, will tend to migrate downward, below the driving shoe or bit, and thus cause misinterpretation of value unless final recovery Can be effected after the hole has been bottomed.Unlike fortuitous and non-recurrent errors, due to, say, running ground, "pile driving" or rock fractures, systematic error due to migration may be unpredict.able from operating data alone, and, therefore, result in serious miscalculation of the weighted average upon which the engineer's recommendation is based.Applied to diamond drilling, loss by downward migration appears to have been largely responsible for distrust of sludge assays in the past. On the other hand, although modern practice rightly trends towards an integration of both core and sludge samples in borehole valuation, the possibility of systematic loss must be investigated when using combination graphs such as those of Longyear, Moehlman and WeIler. If the sludge value is incorrect the combination graphs will serve solely to stultify the core valuation.It appears to be axiomatic that: 1. With full core, sludge assays are of minor import.2. With recovery above 90%, differentjal grinding, of the high grade sections may have occurred, and this c!ln be corrected only by the us.e of cOJ;rect sludge valuation.3. With core recovery less than, say, 70%, no accurate valuation is possible without integrating the sludge assay.4. With less than, say, 10% core recovery, the sludge assay affords the sole basis of evaluating a borehole which may have cost many hundreds of pounds.The conditions demanded for reliable sludge valuation have, in practice, been restricted to high quantitative recovery and return of nearly 90% of the drill water. It is submitted, however, that the following additional knowledge is required:1. The nature of gold distribution in the ore.2. The lifting power of the return water column, which can be gauged by the maximum quartz particle, provided that the degree of "hindrance" can be determined.3. That all gold has been cleared from the bottom of the borehole immediately after it has passed through the orebody.The three cases discussed hereunder are offered not only as proof of the thesis, but also in the hope of promoting discussion on the interpretation of borehole values and on methods for saving free gold in the sludge. The fact that two of them cover alluvial boringand the third diamond drilling has resulted in this attempt to reduce the behaviour of free gold to a basis common to all types of boring.

After question time, Mr Hector, Witbank Town Engineer (visitor) thanked Dr Stander. The meeting closed at 7.10 p.m.

Industrial processes have been developed for ferrochromium production, ilmenite smelting, and cobalt recovery from slag. Recent work has been done on such processes as the production of ferronickel from laterite ores, the fuming and condensation of magnesium, and the recovery of platinum group metals from 'difficult' feedstocks.

Pyrolysis (destructive distillation) techniques developed at the Bureau of Mines to determine the yield and quality of the products from coal were used to convert municipal (household) and industrial refuse into potentially useful solids, liquids, and gases without adding to environmental pollution. The tests demonstrated that a ton of municipal refuse can be converted into 154 to 424 pounds of solid residue, 0.5 to 6 gallons of tar, 1 to 4 gallons of light oil, 97 to 133 gallons of liquor, 16 to 32 pounds of ammonium sulfate, and 7,380 to 18,058 cubic feet of gas. A ton of industrial refuse, consisting of paper, rags, and cardboard, can be converted to 618 to 838 pounds of residue, 1.5 to 3 gallons of light oil, 68 to 75 gallons of liquor, 12 to 23 pounds of ammonium sulfate, and 9,270 to 14,065 cubic feet of gas. The energy from the gas is more than sufficient to provide the heat for the pyrolysis.

The regional shear zone runs along or near the southern margin of the Chinhoyi greenstone belt. It hosts four of the seven mines in the southern part of the belt with recorded production above 100 kg Au, including the top two current producers. Displacement occurred in the late Archaean, producing a shear zone with a trend ranging from northeast at Golden Kopje to east at Muriel. The orebodies at the two mines formed synchronously with the shearing and show strong but contrasting structural controls on mineralisation. The Golden Kopje orebodies plunge to the southwest, parallel to the intersection of curved foliation with discrete shear planes and sub-perpendicular to local stretching lineations. The Muriel orebodies plunge steeply west but parallel to local stretching lineations. The greatest fluid flow during mineralisation of the shear zone was along either the intersection of fabrics (Golden Kopje) or the extension direction (Muriel). There is no unique relation between the orebodies and the extension or shear direction. Where earlier mining has not established the directions of the oreshoots it is essential to understand the possible structurally controlled geometries of orebodies before planning a drilling programme to evaluate their potential

After an unsuccessful transfer from the laboratory to the pilot plant of galena flotation technology which used sodium metabisulphite and ethyl xanthate, laboratory flotation tests were conducted to identify any unusual variables which had a deleterious effect on the position of the lead rougher grade recovery curve for Hilton and Mount Isa silver-lead-zinc ores. Two variables (pulp temperature and contact time for ethyl xanthate and sodium metabisulphite) had important deleterious effects.The findings allowed a successful transfer of the laboratory process to a pilot plant scale process. The effect of temperature was important because the higher temperature (40°C) in the pilot plant pulp increased significantly the rate of reaction between ethyl xanthate and sodium metabisulphite. In the laboratory process at 20 to 25°C, the reaction rate was lower and did not interfere significantly with the process. The contact time for the two reagents was also important in the pilot plant scale process because of the higher reaction rate at 40°C.To employ ethyl xanthate in the pilot plant process, special precautions were required. Further, a collector (Aerofloat 241) from the dithiophosphate family was used successfully in the pilot plant process.

LKAB’s Kiruna Mine, located in northern Sweden, produces about 24 Mton of iron ore yearly using sublevel caving. For efficiency, the mine must deliver planned quantities of three ore products. We use mixed integer programming to schedule Kiruna’s operations, specifically, which production blocks should be mined, and when they should be mined to minimize deviations from planned production quantities while adhering to mining restrictions (e.g., sequencing). A new production block database and a well-formulated mixed integer programming model dramatically reduce the size of the original problem; in less than ten minutes we generate five-year schedules with time fidelity of months.

A substantial proportion of current and historic West Coast gold production comes from deposits situated around the margins of æice ageÆ glaciers. Gold has been eroded and transported by glacial ice then deposited in till and outwash gravel. The interplay between fluvial and glacial processes, climate, basement geology, tectonic uplift, sediment supply and sea level dictates many aspects of the development of the West Coast landscape. The way in which the external forcing factors interact is crucial in determining the gold content of placer deposits in this region. The following is an outline of some of the factors that influence the gold distribution in vicinity of glacial margins.

This Bureau of Mines report describes floor heave ground control problems that have been encountered in a new underground coal mine in West Virginia. Previous experience in the coal seam, the results of physical property investigations, and in situ rock stress determinations are discussed. The apparent cause of the ground control problems is the existence of a high, biaxial, horizontal stress field coupled with a floor member that has time-dependent deformation characteristics, A theoretical analysis of the failure process is developed. The analysis is assisted by finite element techniques. Mine design recommendations based on this analysis are presented.

Under the Town and Country Planning Act 1977 the Ministry of Works and Development has a responsibility for providing information to local and regional planning authorities on public works and matters of national development and importance, for the exercise of their responsibilities under this Act. One such matter which has recently become a source of concern is the development of South Island lignite. In 1979 the Ministry of' Energy produced a position statement outlining a programme of' research leading to the possible extraction of lignite in Southland or Central Otago for conversion into about 50 per cent of New Zealand's liquid fuel requirements by 1995. Understandably this possibility has caused considerable concern at the local level, expressed particularly by bodies such as Federated Farmers and the local authorities. In the absence of any factual knowledge short of mere conjecture been able to recommend to local authorities is that they limit their planning period to ten years. After this time more information regarding the size, nature, location and certainty of the proposal will permit a more accurate assessment of the implications of the York. While on holiday earlier this year I took the opportunity to visit opencast mining areas in Germany and England to gain an appreciation of the scale of impacts involved and discuss with those concerned the procedures used in planning for such operations. What follows is a brief description of these operations, a comparison with the likely development in this country and the extraction of what may be some relevant principles of' operation for the planning of an environmentally acceptable project. The Bureau of Mines conducted oil-displacement tests in the laboratory with three water-in-oil and five oil-in-water emulsions that were created with ultrasonic energy at a frequency of 20 kHz and an acoustic intensity of approximately 100 watts per cm2. Emulsions of either crude oil or kerosine, brine, and 112 to 2 percent emulsifier were formed during 30 seconds of acoustic irradiation. Results indicate that ultrasonic energy induces greater and more uniform dispersion of one liquid in another in the presence of small amounts of chemi¬cal emulsifiers. When the emulsions were injected as a buffer slug before waterflooding, recovery of the oil-in-place was 8 to 22 percent greater than with conventional waterflooding in the test specimens, regardless of the con¬tinuous phase (oil or brine). The emulsions do not appear to be applicable to the Appalachian area; however, because the oilfields are too "tight," the clays in the formation remove the emulsifier from the displacing fluid, and not enough additional oil is produced, compared with recovery using conventional waterflooding, to warrant the increased operating costs.

Introduction The term kaolin is derived from kauling, a Chinese word meaning high ridge. This was the name of a hill in China where kaolin was first mined several hundred years ago (Murray, 1976). Other common names used for kaolin include clay and China Clay. Clay technically has a broader meaning and could refer to bentonite and ball clay as well as kaolin. China clay, as a descriptive term, apparently results from kaolin's origin. But it could also be due to a significant historical use in ceramic applications. The terms kaolin and clay will be used interchangeably in this analysis because of the common practice of using these terms in the paper industry. Major reasons for kaolin's wide-spread industrial usages center on kaolinite's physical features of good color, low viscosity, and inertness. Kaolin is described as a hydrous aluminum silicate with an approximate composition of 2H2O • A12O3 . 2SiO2. A new version of the product is calcined clay with modified hydration content. It is gaining widespread use. Components of any particular kaolin, in addition to alumina and silica, are viewed as impurities. The more values deposits and, hence, higher priced kaolin products are those of the highest purity. Kaolin is the most widely used mineral in paper manufacturing throughout the world. Key production centers are located in England and the US. Most of the Tatter's production is located in Georgia. The key markets for Georgia kaolin are paper markets - both paper coating and paper filling. These paper markets extend throughout the world, not just to domestic markets. In fact, export markets are second in size only to domestic paper markets for Georgia's producers of kaolin. Just as the paper markets are important for kaolin producers, kaolin is an important raw material for papermakers. Compared to the other three major pigments - titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, and talc - kaolin's 1984 tonnage for papermaking represented 85% of the total. Even though titanium dioxide's unit value is much higher, kaolin's estimated total 1984 value still represented 51% of total dollars spent by papermakers for the four pigments. Kaolin grades- are briefly defined using particle size and brightness as principal means of classification. Likewise, grades of papers using kaolin are defined using the American Paper Institute's guidelines. From these definitions, associated kaolin grades used in particular grades of paper are reviewed. Special emphasis is placed on how qualities desired in certain papers are achieved through the use of specialized kaolin grades. World kaolin production World production statistics (Coope, 1979; Table 1) demonstrate that kaolin is produced in many areas of the world. Disseminated gold mineralization in the Vunda River area 12 km SE of Lautoka in Viti Levu occurs sporadically in shoshonite volcanics within an alteration area of some 6 km2. No definite intrusions have yet been located though possible intrusions occur toward the centre and on the eastern margin of the area. The nature and distribution of alteration suggests the presence of a co-magmatic mineralizing stock just below the surface.The gold occurs within close spaced fractures and occasionally around the c1asts of breccia and agglomerate.Various types of alteration compatible with porphyry mineralization occur, but to date show no zoning or defined correlation with incidence of gold which occurs in various alteration facies.It is suggested that the gold and trace copper mineralization at Vunda arises from the sub-volcanic intrusive phase (monzonite) of the Sambeto shoshonite (5 m.y.) and is part of an E-W zone of porphyry-type mineralizationtrending easterly to the Kingston porphyry copper deposit at Navilawa.There is a close similarity between the Vunda mineralization and some of the porphyry deposits of alkali affinity in British Columbia, Canada.
