"IntroductionThe evaporation losses of gasoline in the refinery, can be reduced by proper methods of refinery construction and operation. When gasoline evaporates slowly, as when stored in tanks that are not vapor tight, the most volatile part evaporates first, so that the remaining liquid in not only less in volume, but is also lower in quality. In some,evaporation changes the characteristics of the product so much that it must be reblended to meet trade specifications.Refiners are, therefore, greatly interested in the various appliances and methods used to reduce these losses. In the past this interest has been directed largely to storage tanks, probably because evaporation from tanks is more readily observed than losses during other refinery operations. As tests by the Bureau of Mines on evaporation of gasoline from small storage tanks had indicated that the losses during the various stages of refining might be equal to or greater than those of standing storage, a survey was during the spring and early summer months of 1924 in a large number of refineries in the Mid-Continent field. In order to enable the refiner to select the results of those tests that conform most nearly to the conditions that he has to meet, tests were conducted at various stages of refining, as follows: (1) Randown tanks, (2) (agitators), (3) filling tank cars, (4) storage of refined products, and (3) miscellaneous handling. The results are presented in this paper."

OCTOBER will be western month for the Institute. With meetings at Spokane, Tulsa, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, and with a large number of American Institute of Mining Engineers members and their families in the party sailing out through the Golden Gate to Japan on the afternoon of the tenth, the major activities of the Institute will, for this month at least, be west of the Mississippi. Despite cancellations due to necessity, most of the officers of the Institute will be present and taking part in some one or more of the Western meetings. Prof. Robert S. Richards, our senior past-president, will attend both the Spokane and San Francisco meetings and then go to Japan. President Bradley will preside at the San Francisco meeting and then head the party going to Tokyo. At Tulsa and Los Angeles, the principal officers of the Petroleum Division will be present and active and at all the meetings, directors, ex-directors and -present and past officers will be on the job and keeping things moving.

Germany as an industrial nation is highly dependent on the import of mineral or metal resources. Sources which have not been considered until now are the marine mineral resources (MMR), which in recent times are enjoying more and more increasing interests and which might provide in the future a considerable contribution to the supply security on metal resources not only for the industrial countries. Backed up by the German government’s "National Masterplan Maritime Technologies" (NMMT) and corresponding industrial R&D-activities, the idea and the advantages of deep-sea mining is gaining more and more interests and supporters with respect to industrial and political considerations on strategic raw material resources as well as on the development of deep-sea mining technologies. The NMMT aims to initiate growth and increase the competitiveness of the German maritime industry on international markets and covers about 10 different marine and ocean technology sectors including deep-sea mining.

"ABSTRACTThe paper addresses the application of automated monitoring, control, and navigation to improve dragline performance. SummaryImproving dragline performance in the Canadian coal mines is critical to the continued success of the industry. Draglines represent a large capital investment and coal prices are low by historic standards. This paper argues that the introduction of monitoring, control, and navigation on draglines offers an opportunity to significantly reduce a dragline’s operating cost per cubic metre moved. To place the importance of this in perspective, a North Dakota mine calculates that every 1% increase in dragline productivity means a savings to the mine of US$340,000 per year. MonitorsAutomated dragline monitoring is a well established technology with commercial products available since the early 1980s. The three main reasons for placing monitors on draglines are (Walker, 1993):1. productivity increases: reduce variations between different operators’ performance across different shifts;2. quality increases: increase the percentage of ore and waste loads that go to the correct destination; and3. special projects (engineering projects): justify installing static field exciters and regulator upgrades; implement power management; aid operator training; study high performance buckets, rigging changes, and various excavation sequences.Mines as diverse as Kennecott’s Cordero- Rojo Complex in the United States and Natal Coal Corp.’s Optimum Mine in South Africa report dragline productivity increases of 10% to 20% in the region attributed to the implementation of dragline monitoring."

The Reclamation Program for the Northern Zone of the Indus Plains in West Pakistan involves the construction of 30,000 irrigation wells to serve 20 million acres with an annual pumpage of nearly 40 million acre-ft. Detailed hydrologic studies indicated that mild steel would be satisfactory for casing; however, within two years after construction, about 10% of the wells began to fail due to encrustation and corrosion of the casing. A search to find a noncor-rosive substitute for the steel casing disclosed that only fiberglass-reinforced plastic pipe satisfied all requirements. The results of initial use of fiberglass have been highly satisfactory and have resulted in a lower over-all well cost. Advances in technology pomise further reduction in prices and improvement in performance. The northern zone of the Indus Basin comprises a vast area of essentially level land in West Pakistan which is irrigated by means of a complex system of canals that distribute more water to more land than any other irrigation system in the world. In spite of the development of this extensive irrigation system, production of food and fiber has not met the requirements of the country. The major reasons that crop production has not reached anticipated levels are the lack of adequate irrigation supplies and effective subsurface drainage. As a result, yields per acre are among the lowest in the world for areas where irrigation is practiced, and many thousands of acres of valuable crop land have been removed from production or seriously affected by salinity and waterlogging. To rectify the problems of irrigation supply and drainage the Government of Pakistan has undertaken a program of Salinity Control and Reclamation which is being administered by the Water and Power Development Authority. The Authority retained Tipton and Kalmbach, Inc., of Denver, Colo., as engineers for the program in the northern zone of the Indus Basin. This program consists of the construction of about 30,000 irrigation wells to provide drainage for waterlogged lands and full irrigation supplies, including leaching requirements, for all cultivated lands. This report summarizes the results of a one-year agreement for research on the electromagnetic environment in coal mines, which was conceived as the beginning of a long term cooperative program between ITS and the Bureau of Mines. The concepts on which it was originally based are a result of the report on mine rescue and survival by the Committee on Mine Rescue and Survival Techniques of the National Academy of Engineering, dated March 1970. This report drew particular attention to the need for improved communications during and following mine disasters. In particular, the outstanding problems identified were the location of, and communication with, trapped miners. Some tentative solutions, generally involving long-wave electromagnetic signals, were offered. Consideration of the problems of disaster location and communication soon leads to consideration of the communications techniques (or lack of them) for use under normal mining conditions. In particular, if a disaster communication and/or location system is to be readily available and operable under disaster conditions, it should also be usable during mining operations. In this way operators can become familiar enough with the system to operate it during disaster conditions, as well as provide a mechanism for regular testing.

A siliceous low-grade copper ore from Mpanda Mineral Field (MMF), located in south west Tanzania consisting of SiO2 (58.3%), Fe (10.4 %) and Cu (0.9 %) was initially subjected to selective dispersion-flocculation using sodium trisilicate (STS) as a dispersant and xanthan gum (XG) as a flocculant. Subsequently, the selectively flocculated fraction was floated using a collector combination of potassium ethyl and amyl xanthate (1:1) in the presence of poly-ethylene oxide (PEO) as a silica depressant, to get a copper concentrate. The mineralogical investigations confirmed that the MMF ore was mainly composed of quartz, chalcopyrite and pyrite. Adsorption studies indicated that the adsorption density of XG on MMF ore decreased with an increase in pH, while that of PEO was independent of pH. The adsorption isotherms of XG and PEO on MMF ore exhibited Langmuirian behaviour. The zeta potential studies of MMF ore indicated that the iso-electric point (IEP) was located at pH 2.6, presumably due to its high silica content. In the combined presence of XG and STS, the zeta potential of MMF ore became more negative, with an increase in the concentration of STS. However, in the presence of PEO, the zeta potential of MMF ore became less negative with an increase in the concentration of PEO beyond the IEP, without shifting the IEP. Selective dispersion-flocculation of MMF ore improved the flocculated chalcopyrite grade to 19.8 %, yielding a degree of flocculation and a maximum separation efficiency of 12.1 % and 85.7 % respectively, after three desliming stages in the presence of 30 ppm of STS and 30 ppm of XG. A copper concentrate of 29 % grade and 90 % recovery containing silica of 0.9 % grade and 1.7 % recovery was achieved by flotation of the selectively flocculated component, using PEO as a depressant for quartz. ADOLPH GREINER, Seraing, Belgium :-I have nothing special to add to Professor Hubert's paper except to say that there are some little things that it would be well to have cor-rected when the paper comes to be published. In dealing with the thermal efficiency of the engine, you will find that the 29.84 per cent was a very high one. Professor Hubert has forgotten those engines built under the Cockerill type, but he has referred to them in Appendix II. At our works at Cockerill we have built 63 engines, giving 63,000 h.p., and the other companies who have received licenses have built 113 engines, making 103,000 h.p., and aggregating 176 engines and 166,000 h.p. Eight years ago I had the pleasure of giving to the Institute the results obtained up to that time. Since then a good many engines have been constructed. In 1898 I thought a blast-furnace producing 100 tons of pig iron would allow 3,000 h.p. Professor Witz and Professor Hubert show that with the same production of pig the new engines take 3,800 h.p. out of the gas. At present at Cockerill we make 700 to 800 tons of pig iron per day, and we hope to have 26,000 h.p; in a few years. At present we have only half of that in gas-engines, but we hope to have in five or six years all the gas out of these furnaces to the number of 25,000 or 26,000 h.p. MR. The Helen Mine, of the Algoma Steel Corporation, in the Michipicoten district, Ontario, Canada, has produced more than 6,240,290 tons of iron ore. Prior to and during World War I, 2,823,369 gross tons of brown ore were shipped, and from 1939 to the end of the 1944 season, 3,416,921 gross tons of siderite ore were produced from open-pit operations. Brief descriptions are given of the nature of the ore, the mining methods employed and the manner of treatment of the ore. Shipment of the finished product, known as Algoma sinter, is made to blast furnaces in both Canada and the United States. The iron-ore bodies—i.e., the oxide ores of the Old Helen and the siderite of the New Helen—are a part of a tabular shaped area of iron formation that extends over a length of more than 100,000 ft. and has a maximum width of 1000 ft. The ores are considered to be a product of introduction of iron-bearing material accompanied by replacement of the rocks already present. It is shown that introduction took place subsequent to the development of the major folded structures. It is believed the iron-bearing material emanated from an igneous source. Introduction The Michipicoten mining district derives its name from the Indian word1 meaning "place of bold promontories" or "region of big places," and anyone who has visited this part of Canada will agree that the district is well named. In 1897, there was active prospecting for gold in the district and the Ontario Bureau of Mines2 opened a recording office at the Hudson's Bay post at Michipicoten River. In the summer of 1897, Ben Boyer, probably searching for gold, discovered an outcrop of brown iron ore at the east end of a small lake, less than 8 miles, in an air line, northeast of the nearest point on Michipicoten Harbour. In the following year, extensive surface exploration and diamond drilling disclosed a commercial body of nonbessemer brown ore, possibly 700 ft. long and 200 ft. wide, of about the following analysis:3 Fe (natural), 57.15 per cent; S, dried at 212°F.. 0.113; SiO2, dried at 212°F., 4.00; P, dried at 212°F., 0.125. The property (Figs. 1-3) was taken over by E. V. Clergue and ultimately was transferred to the Algoma Steel Corporation. The Algoma Central Railway shortly afterward built its line from Michipicoten Harbour to the mine, together with an ore dock at the Harbour. Thus, within three years of its discovery, the mine had adequate shipping facilities and a market for its ore. The AMIRA Code of Practice and Guidelines for Metal Accounting was developed in response to demand from a number of sponsor companies, including one major platinum producer. Since its publication in 2007, the Code has become widely accepted in the mining industry world-wide as a guide for best practice in metal accounting. With the changes in the structure of the platinum mining industry in South Africa over the last 10 ? 15 years, in particular, the starting up of a number of small platinum producers who must have their concentrate smelted and the contained valuable metals refined by third parties, the need for metal accounting systems that are accurate and have an acceptable level of precision has become even more critical to the success of a platinum-producing operation. The current state of metal accounting in the industry is discussed and possible areas for improved accounting and associated metallurgical efficiencies are identified.

Northern Australia leads in world-class mineral deposits' is a bold statement. First there must be a starting point. Land north of the Tropic of Capricorn (23¦ 26' 5") will be regarded as Northern Australia covering nearly 40 per cent of the land surface of Australia. As opposed to land south of the Tropic of Capricorn, it should be regarded as Tropical Northern Australia and for the sake of brevity, (TNA) Refer Figure 1. Apart from the tyranny of distance from centres of power and population in the temperate zone, it suffered in the past from the belief that the tropics are unsuited for European workers and from the lack of infrastructure. Outstanding mineral deposits of iron, base metals, gold and diamonds, discovered and developed in the past three decades, provided the substance for the title. There are many world-class mines producing and there are mineral deposits neutralised through Government policy. TNA can maintain its lead in world-class mineral deposits provided Government policy will stop partitioning the land and decreasing that available for exploration. Let's look at what we have that is world-class. In Western TNA iron ore deposits at Paraburdoo, Mt Tom Price, Marandoo, gold at Telfer, diamonds at Argyle. In central TNA uranium at Ranger and Jabiluka, lead-zinc-silver at McArthur River, gold at the Tanami, manganese at Groote Eylandt and bauxite at Gove. In eastern TNA Mt Isa, Hilton, Century zinc-lead, bauxite at Weipa, gold at Kidston, Mt Leyshon, magnesite at Yamba and coal mines in the Bowen Basin. Those mines or deposits stand out yet are only an indication of the numerous lesser mines and of mineral deposits depending for development on market demand and/or changes in Government policy, eg 'The Three Mines' policy. Very large areas of mineral rich structures in the western, central and eastern parts of TNA are concealed below flat lying comparatively young unmineralised sediments. The Great Artisan basin sediments in eastern TNA can and do host oil shale and non metallic minerals. Nearly 40 per cent of western TNA is covered by the Great Sandy Desert. The Canning Track, with a series of 54 wells, was constructed by surveyor Alfred Canning in 1908 - 1910 with great difficulty. It extends 1700 kilometres from Halls Creek in the north to the gold town of Wiluna in the south, through the Great and Little Sandy Deserts. Gold explorers are following favourable structures extending to the north east below the sediments and sand hills covering the track. Half of central TNA's mineral structures are concealed by the Tanami desert and the Cretaceous sediments covering the pastoral regions of the Barkly Tableland and the Daly Waters to Top Springs pastoral areas. The Georgina Basin in the south eastern section is part of the concealment.

"SynopsisSustainable infrastructure development has long been identified as a key enabler for socio-economic growth and poverty reduction in societies globally. Twenty-one years into the young South African democracy, economic prospects are fragile and unemployment statistics are high. According to Trading Economics (2015) the GDP growth rate in South Africa averaged 3.07% from 1993 until 2015.Through the National Development Plan 2030, the government has responded by instituting the Presidential Infrastructure Coordinating Commission (PICC) to direct national growth and drive job creation by effecting a long-term infrastructure investment programme. The Commission is mandated by Cabinet to coordinate, integrate, and accelerate implementation of more than 150 individual social and economic infrastructure plans.In the civil infrastructure development sector, increased urbanization is compelling governments and the public sector to expand safe and reliable public amenities, but the availability of real estate for construction in congested cities is a challenge. Within the mining infrastructure construction industry safe, rapid, and efficient mine extraction strategies are imperative to realize increased production, business hurdle rates, and stakeholder expectations.Asset owners and stakeholders are obliged to consider advanced mechanized underground excavation and support technologies in order to present feasible solutions timeously. From an engineering design, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) perspective tunnelling technology and boring applications have a distinct advantage over conventional excavation techniques. These solutions may enhance commerce and transportation by expanding infrastructure in concentrations of national economic activity, providing crucial linkages with rural areas, between cities, and across international borders.This paper explores the contribution by mechanized tunnelling technology and boring applications applied in conjunction with digital and automation technologies compared with conventional methodologies. The technological expertise, combined with a paradigm shift in delivery of project objectives, will promote economic growth, aid recovery from the economic downturn, and improve social development."

"Abstract: 1 Sophia Spoortunnel Marco Ziller, Trevi S.p.A.:For the construction of 14 cross passages connecting the twin tunnels of the Sophiaspoortunnel the Artificial Ground Freezing technique was applied as temporary soil improvement. AGF by Brine and Liquid Nitrogen was implemented. Automatic data acquisition and recording systems were installed to monitor the variation of the temperatures in the soil during the freezing intervention in order to control the behaviour and the efficacy of the treatment.IntroductionThe Sophia rail tunnel is a bored tunnel with a length of 4.24 km, comprising two separate parallel tubes with an outside diameter of 9.45 m. The twin tunnels were excavated by a TBM equipped with hydroshield. Seven service shafts, approximately 30 m deep, were constructed in between the tunnels. From each shaft two cross passages were constructed connecting the shaft with both tubes, for a total of 14 cross passages.The Artificial Ground Freezing technique utilizing both the Brine and Liquid Nitrogen methods was used for temporary waterproofing and soil support to allow the excavation of the cross passages. The natural soil to be frozen was consisting in loose sand and clay under a hydrostatic pressure up to 250 kPa.For the measurement of the ground temperature. Automatic data acquisition and recording systems were installed to monitor the variation of the temperatures in the soil and at the contact with the tunnel lining. Furthermore, a comprehensive computerized system of sensors and cryogenic valves was designed and implemented in order to manage the whole Nitrogen process.Soil Main CharacteristicsThe soil stratigraphy is generally consisting in Clay (Holocene) from ground level to -15 m depth, followed by Pleistocenic Sand, from -15 to -25 m, and Clay below -25 m."

This report describes the operation and maintenance of the Mobile Inert Gas Generator for use in the Remote Sealing System for fighting underground coal mine fires. Seals are emplaced in mine passageways between the fire zone and the rest of the mine isolating the fire zone from the mine. The seals consist of fly ash that has been pneumatically conveyed via inert gas through a borehole connecting the surface and the passageway, Inert gas is used as the fly ash seal transport medium (instead of fresh air) since the introduction of large volumes of fresh air in the vicinity of the fire zone would be undesirable. The inert gas generation equipment is mounted on two flatbed trailers, the "hot" trailer and the "cold" trailer. The hot trailer contains the combustion and cooling equipment. The cold trailer contains the moisture removal and compression equipment necessary to convey the fly ash. The system is self-sufficient and requires only fuel and fly ash deliveries. The Inert Gas Generator has been thoroughly performance tested and has been operated in the field for approximately 200 hr. The system was employed in the demonstration of the entire Remote Mine Sealing System at the Jenney Mine in the Fall of 1978. The system is currently available for fighting any future underground coal mine fires.

Mining is one of the oldest industrial activities. Its products are essential to modern civilization. Paradoxically, and despite a deep-rooted belief to the contrary, mining is not a lucrative industry— at least not in the aggregate. This assertion is true not only for recent years, one of the weakest periods in terms of metal prices, but also for a long time past. In 1776,Adam Smith said in The Wealth of Nations: “Of all those expensive and uncertain projects, how-ever, which bring bankruptcy upon the greater part of the people who engage in them, there is none perhaps more perfectly ruinous than the search after ... mines. It is perhaps the most disadvantageous lottery in the world... Projects of mining, instead of replacing the capital employed in them, ... commonly absorb both capital and profits.”

INTRODUCTION There has been considerable discussion in recent years of the strained relations between owners, engineers and contractors caused by the rapid increase in costly litigation in underground excavation due to construction claims. These time consuming claims are not to the best interests of the industry. It has been a conclusion of some of the concerned parties that there could be a substantial reduction in these claims if a mutual respect for each other's roles could be maintained along with a practical contractual arrangement for sharing the risks of the unforeseen costs inherent in the business. This paper will touch on the overall problem of these relationships, but confine the major discussion to the role of geology in claims and, in particular, changed conditions claims, since they form the base for the bulk of those involving geology. Geologists can make a major contribution to the reduction of these claims if their particular abilities are recognized and used properly. CLAIMS AND GEOLOGICAL RISKS The tunnel contractor is strictly bound by the contract he signs, and the risks he assumes thereby must be priced. The most important variable factor on which he must base his price is the geologic data provided and his interpretation of it. M.S. Azun I have many objections to the content of the author's paper. Before discussing it, however, I would like to repeat the property of semivariogram function. Second order stationary properties of regionalized variables (ReV's) such as semivariogram function y(h) are perfectly known in geostatistics. Also, the kriging equations in the language of mathematical statistics using second order stationary properties are well understood. However, the way to use the sample (estimated) semivariogram function in any one of the kriging procedures is vague. The sample semivariogram function is given as follows: [ ] where N is the total number of samples, Xi is the sample value at the i - th location, Xi+h is the sample value at the i + h - th location, and h is the distance among the samples. An estimation variance of sample semivariogram function of first lag is smaller than that of higher order lag. The theoretical semivariogram function reaches the variance of samples asymptotically. But this is not easily observable because of the larger variation involved in the estimate of semivariogram function. In general, an estimation procedure is done for h = 0, 1, 2, up to the greatest integer less than N/2, even though sample semivariogram function can be computable through N-1. After estimating semivariogram function, the critical question of how to model sample semivariogram function arises. As seen in the above equation, sample semivariogram function is discrete and can be smoothed by the model being selected. Therefore, modeling of sample semivariogram function is the most important step in geostatistics. It not only smoothes a discrete function but also affects the results of the kriging procedure. When the only aim is to model the semivariogram function, which is the basic point of the author's paper, one can employ any fitting techniques, such as curve fitting, or any arbitrary functions, which are called submodels in the paper. The term "arbitrary function" is used rather than "submodel" because there is no basic understanding of developing them. The author suggests that the sum of those submodels can also be used for the modeling of sample semivariogram function. The combination of any arbitrary functions brings many problems instead of giving an insight of the domain structure considered. The author used two arbitrary functions and the nugget effect in response to sample semivariogram function (Fig. 10). For the same example, he stated that the parameters involved in the mixed arbitrary function model can be accepted when the discrepancy between sample semivariogram function and the model is small visually. For verifying the fitting behavior of any selected model, one should not be contented with the visual satisfactory. Some statistical measure such as goodness of fit has to be used. The author's practice is no more than an exercise in curve fitting without any fundamental understanding or conceptualization of the underlying physical mechanism. Furthermore, the selection of any model is not an easy task if the purpose is the search for the "best" response to the observed second order properties of ReV's. I suggest that the Markovian model (Azun, 1983), on the basis of a theoretical understanding of underlying mechanism, which gives more information about the occurrence of regionalized variables, is used to respond all properties of ReV's. There are a lot of problems for modeling of one-dimensional sample semivariogram function. Thus, it is not appropriate to go to higher order dimensional sample semivariogram function modeling. In the meantime, I would recommend that one can connect the values of standardized sample semivariogram function rather than simple values of semivariogram function in the two-dimensional estimation. The standardized values can be computed in dividing the semivariogram function value by the number of sample pairs involved in each lag regardless of the directions. In conclusion, geostatistics is an interdisciplinary area in mining that uses the principles of mathematical statistics. Thus, it should not violate any probabilistic and statistical rules. When Matheron was developing the theory of geostatistical study in the early years of geostatistics, many mining people had a reservation accepting the geostatistical tools. However, this does not mean that we, the geostatisticians, might try to convince those people using some "strange" tools or rules as some authors implied (Baafi and Kim, 1984). Instead, we have to develop and explain the geostatistical tools staying only in the framework of statistical concepts and properties. Rendu The interactive method proposed by Rendu allows practitioners to develop semivariogram models that take into account not only the numerical information obtained by sampling, but also highly significant additional information that often cannot be quantified. The geology of the deposit - including hypotheses concerning its genesis, sampling methods, assaying methods, and mathematical methods used to calculate the semivariograms - all have an influence on the numerical results obtained and on how these results should be interpreted. If all the information concerning the spatial distribution of values in a mineral deposit was contained in the sample values, it could be argued that statistical techniques alone would produce optimum models. However, this is rarely, if ever, the case. Methods that allow the user to take into account his experience and his geologic understanding of the deposit should not be rejected for the sake of theoretical statistical purity.

Expansion in total capacity of the natural-gasoline industry.to produce light products continued in 1944 and 1945. The average rate of gain, however, was reduced to about 6 percent annually from over 9 percent in the preceding 4-year period. New facilities at cycle plants again accounted for most of the increase in productive capacity. Between January 1, 1944, and January 1, 1946, the number of cycle plants increased from 32 to 37 and their total capacity from 3,278 thousand gallons daily to 4,848 thousand (48 percent). Capacity of all other plants in the industry increased in the same period from 12,735 thousand gallons daily to 13,080 thousand, or only 3 percent. The capacity of the average plant increased to 28,600 gallons a day from 24,400 gallons on January 1, 1944, continuing the established trend. The average capacity of cycle plants increased to 131,000 gallons a day from 102,400 gallons, and the average capacity of all other natural-gasoline plants increased to 22,200 gallons a day from 20,400 gallons. Although the number of plants increased in only three States in the 2-year period (Texas, Okla- homa, and Arkansas), the total capacity of plants increased in eight States. A further decline of 29 reduced the total number of plants to 626 on January 1, 1946. Compared with 10 years earlier, gasoline plants were more numerous in only 4 States: Texas (48 more), New Mexico (7 more), Arkansas (2 more), and Louisiana (1 more). The largest declines, in order, were in Oklahoma, Illinois, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and California. The number of plants with fractionating equipment for separating the liquefied gases from heavier fractions was 202 on January 1, 1946 and 182 2 years earlier. The principal changes in number and capacity of shut-down plants were an increase in Texas and a decrease in California. Shut-down natural-gaso- line plants are usually among the smallest units in their vicinity.

This review paper describes recent advances that have been made at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) in Brisbane in developing a framework for simulating the flotation process. The work has been carried out collaboratively with the Mineral Processing Research Unit of the University of Cape Town in South Africa (UCT), as part of the Australian Minerals Industries Research Association (AMIRA) P9 Project. The framework consists of four components, namely – the mathematical model of the flotation process, suitable measurement tools for characterising the flotation cell, a computer program for modelling and simulating the process and the plantas for testing and validating the flotation models. A brief description of the model is first presented, then a number of applications of the model are described. The paper shows how the model can be used to optimise the performance of flotation cells, and then two case studies on the modelling methodologies are described. Finally the current and future plans of the project are outlined.
