Embankment piles are common in the Scandinavian countries (Kjellman, 1940) and in Southeast Asia as support of fills, light structures, bridge abutments and deep excavations (Eide, 1968) as described in the following. Untreated timber piles are often used for light structures and shallow fills when the ground water level is high since they are inexpensive and readily available. When the applied loads are relatively high precast concrete piles and steel piles are preferred. DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS Embankment piles carry the load from a fill or a struc-ture either through skin friction along the sides of the piles (Fig. 1a) or through a precast concrete slab or through pile caps at the top of the piles (Fig. 1b). When the load is carried by skin friction it is often economical to use small diameter timber piles because of the large surface area (Asplund, 1939). For precast concrete or steel piles concrete caps are used to transfer the load to the piles due to the relatively high capacity of the piles since the skin friction resistance alone is not sufficient to transfer the load to the piles.

"This repot continues the series of papers being prepared at the Southwest Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the department of mining and metallurgy, University of Arizona, on factors involved in the leaching of ores. A list of previous publications is given in the bibliography at the end of this paper.Four factors are essential to the leaching of any copper-bearing ore: (1) A solution that will attack the copper minerals must get into the body of the ore particles; (2) the copper minerals must be dissolved by the solution; (3) the solution containing the dissolved copper must find its way out of the voids of the rocks into the main solution; and (4) the copper in solution must be recovered by some means of precipitation.This paper considers the third step -- the extraction of the water-soluble copper. From leached ores. The usual commercial practice in leaching copper ores consists of: (1) Crushing the ore to pass through a screen with approximately one-quarter or one-third inch openings; (2) charging the crushed ore into a fat; (3) adding, usually by upward percolation, a solution that will attack the copper minerals; and (4) washing the copper-laden solutions out of the ore with solutions weaker in copper than the pregnant solution, and finally with water. A countercurrent system of leaching and washing is usually employed. In some plants the solutions are circulated during leaching and washing, and in others they are not. In some plants the wash solutions are added by upward percolation, while at Chuquicamata the so-called ""piston-displacement"" method of washing is employed.The following condensed resume of the leaching cycle of the plant of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. is given to present to the reader a picture of the steps involved in a typical leaching cycle. This plant was recently described in detail.4 The ore, crushed to pass openings 11/2 inches in diameter, passes over a screen with ¼-inch openings. The undersize from the screen goes to a Dorr howl classifier that removes the primary slime from the circuit. The overflow from the classifier is treated in a slime-leaching plant. The oversize of the ¼-inch screen passes through rolls, where it is crushed to pass a 3/8-inchscreen. The undersize from the 3/8-inch screen join with the coarse material from the classifier, and the combined products become the feed to the leaching vats. There are 13 concrete lead-lined leaching vats. The complete leaching cycle is 13 days. Eight tanks are under acid-iron content at all times; three are being washed, one tank is being filled, and the one is being excavated. The electrolyzed solution from the tank house, to which amount of new acid has been added, is put on the oldest tank of ore under need This solution travels from tank to tank and finally emerges from the newest ore"

This report is volume 3 of an eleven-volume final report for a Grant completed by The Pennsylvania State University for the Bureau of Mines to develop a dynamic general purpose computer simulation model for underground coal mining. The simulator developed under the Grant has a wide range of possible applications in the design and evaluation of underground coal mining systems from the standpoints of health and safety, productivity, and mine environment. The Master Design Simulator consists of nine free-standing function-oriented subsystem models linked together into an integrated, comprehensive model of an entire mining system. The subsystems comprising the Master Design Simulator include geology and reserves, methane generation, roof support, subsidence, production, rail haulage, cost, water generation,' and ventilation. This volume of the final report describes the Methane Generator subsystem of the Master Design Simulator. This subsystem is used to determine methane emission rates into the mine environment. These flow rates are then used by the simulator in planning primary and secondary ventilation systems, planning a methane drainage system, and analyzing complex ventilation networks. Both steady state and unsteady state gas flows are included, and have been modeled as second order nonlinear partial differential equations. Finite difference equations are used to obtain numerical solutions to the models using a central differencing scheme. An application of the model is presented. The appendices include derivation of the gas flow equations used in the model as well as a users manual for the computer program.

An implicit numerical method is presented for simulating the differential and algebraic relations governing one-dimensional three-phase flow in porous media. The method is based upon compositional representation of the hydrocarbon system. Variable physical properties and water-oil capillary forces are included in the formulation; however, the effect of gravity is ignored. The effects of changing composition and mass transfer are considered through the use of known phase behavior concepts and correlations. The differential and algebraic equations and the numeric approximations to these equations are presented, and the computing algorithm is discussed in detail. This method is used to simulate a single-phase, two hydrocarbon-component gas displacement laboratory experiment. The method is also applied in simulating a solution gas drive and a gas injection problem using a reservoir oil represented as a nine-component mixture. For comparative purposes, the latter two problems also are examined with a one-dimensional volumetric model. The results of the simulation of the laboratory experiment demonstrate the relevance of this method to problems wherein the effects of mass transfer significantly enter the displacement process. The comparison of the results of the volumetric and compositional methods applied to a reservoir system illustrates not only the advantages and benefits derived from examining the hydrocarbon system composition, but also the necessity of this approach in application to a general reservoir problem. INTRODUCTION The advent of large memory, high-speed digital computers enabled reservoir engineers and mathematicians to pool their knowledge in the development of sophisticated techniques for the prediction of oil and gas reservoir performance. These techniques have progressed from volumetric and trend analysis calculations to the development of "mathematical models", or reservoir simulators. These latter models, in general, utilize finite difference approximations to the rather complex partial differential equations that mathematically describe the physics and thermodynamics of fluid flow in porous media. Many forms of this "model" type are available today, and much of the recent literature has been devoted to either improving known methods or developing new techniques for use in these prediction methods. The more advanced techniques in use at this time consist of the solution of differential and algebraic relations that describe a reservoir geometry in one, two or three dimensions and that incorporate reservoir hydrocarbon and water fluid systems that obey specified physical laws, having properties that might easily be measured in the laboratory. This type of model utilizes formation volume factors and other volumetric data, expressed directly as functions of pressure, to represent the reservoir fluid system. Experience gained with this type of simulator, commonly known as a "beta-factor model", has indicated that the approach has many outstanding defects, most of them due to the assumption that those properties measured in the laboratory completely describe the behavior of the fluid system throughout the life of the project under study. The effects of varying hydrocarbon composition and mass transfer between the phases of this hydrocarbon system must, by definition, be ignored. These defects, which may often be ignored in

"Increased production of explosives in the United States in 1933 compared with 1932 is shown by statistics compiled by the Demographical Division, Health and Safety Branch, United States Bureau of Mines. The figures relate only to explosives used for industries purposes, such as mining, quarrying, and road building, and do not cover nonindustrial explosives, such as ammunition or fireworks. Industrial explosives include black blasting powder, permissible explosives, 5 and high explosives other than permissibles figures in the tables of this report were compiled from reports covering sales by the individual companies manufacture of explosives in the United States in 1933. Because of the close agreement among the several series of figures, the quantity of explosives sold is considered as reflecting production and consumption, and the three terms ""sales"", ""production"", and ""consumption"" are used interchangeably in the discussion unless otherwise stated.Of the principal industries that use high construction operations accounted for the largest percentage of increase in consumption during 1933; metal mining and quarrying also used more of this class of explosives than in the previous year. Coal mining is the chief consumer of permissible explosives; the figures for 1933 showed that bituminous-coal mining used a larger quantity than in 1932, and that anthracite mines also showed a small increase. Although a net increase of less than 1 percent in consumption was reported for black blasting powder, large increases in use of this class of explosives were reported for metal mining, miscellaneous types of work, and bituminous-coal mining. Due to highly competitive international coal markets, Stockton mine is bound to produce very high quality coals consistently if it is to maintain and expand its market share. The nature of the deposit is such that coals from various source pits are blended in differing proportions to meet the various coal quality specifications of the customer. The complexity arises due to quality variation within the seam both horizontally and vertically and the fact that up to six different products with completely different quality specifications may have to be produced. With increasing demand for this rare product and with CoalCorp eager to meet this demand comes the requirement for computer methods to handle this highly complex problem of both modelling and scheduling.

Native asphalt was produced by three companies in two States, Texas and Utah. Bituminous limestone, used primarily as a paving material for street and road repair, was produced by one firm, R. L. White Co., Uvalde County, TX. Gilsonite, a solidified hydrocarbon found only in Colorado and Utah, was mined by two firms, American Gilsonite Co., a division of Chevron Resources Co. (a subsidiary of Standard Oil Co. of California), and Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp. Hydrocarbon Mining Co. (a subsidiary of Oberon Oil Inc., a Utah corporation) closed its mining operation during the year.

Time-dependent ground behavior may have important implications for the construction process or the life of a tunnel. The paper gives a concise overview of the influence of time on the deformations and the stability of underground openings, including topics such as face stability in soft ground or the time-development of pressure or deformations in squeezing or swelling rock. While keeping in mind practical questions of tunnel engineering, emphasis is placed on understanding the observed time-dependency, on the underlying mechanisms (such as pore water pressure dissipation or chemical processes) as well as on the respective inherent prediction-uncertainties and design-uncertainties.

Background information, formulae and a systematic set of procedures for estimating capital and operating costs for open pit mining equipment are presented in this paper. Firstly, equipment capital costs are required. These can be obtained from either suppliers, contractors or from first principles. The equipment is then divided into cost elements. Typically these are fuel and power requirements, spare parts consumption, wear items such as tyres, teeth and drill bits and finally repair and operating labour requirements. By consideration of the cost and life of each element a base cost can be derived. The base cost is then adjusted to suit specific site conditions such as the proximity to spare parts suppliers, the duty or ground conditions and the management and operator skills specific to the site. Hence, the same item of equipment can be costed to reflect different operations. Included are tables and data for typical plant items. Several examples are also given to illustrate the methodology being presented. The intention is to provide a set of procedures to allow costs to be built up from base level in a systematic and repeatable way. Applications for these costs include feasibility studies, budgetting and data for economic analyses.

Orebodies are defined in economic terms in that they must satisfy conditions determined by costs of mining, extraction and marketing before being so described. Despite this they have an essential chemical character as specialized products resulting from geochemical differentiation, and it is surprising that so little basic geochemical research has been carried out with respect to ore occurrence and that prospecting methods based on geochemical principles are not more widely applied.Many exploration geologists associate geochemistry with analytical techniques applied to the detection of dispersed traces of metals from actual orebodies. Geochemical research, applied to economic geology, goes far beyond this limited field and the purpose of this paper is to discuss aspects of such research and its use in formulating exploration principles.THE GEOCHEMICAL BACKGROUND TO MINERAL OCCURRENCE AND EXPLORATIONThe three aspects of economic mineral deposits to which geochemical research can be of use in determining ore guides are genesis, control of deposition and mode of dispersion from orebodies after emplacement. Prospecting for mineral deposits is primarily based on theories of ore occurrence which deal with the genetic and depositional influences controlling localization of ore. There are many such theories and they will not be discussed here as they have been adequately reviewed in geological publications. Due to their high amount of stored energy, explosives have been the cause of many serious injuries and fatalities over the last centuries. Despite safety advances and awareness in the last decades, injuries and fatalities continue to occur at mining operations due to blasting. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, from 1978 to 2001, blasting incidents claimed 106 lives and were responsible for over 1000 injuries in mines in the US. The main causes of incidents found today are flyrock, blast area security and premature detonations. The concerted efforts of the mining and explosives industries and labour and government agencies have greatly improved the safety record of blasting in mines.

A table of factors for rapid, accurate calculation of the volume of pure helium in cylindrical steel containers, at base conditions of 14.7 psia and 70° F, is presented. The table covers a pressure range from 10 to 10,000 psin in 10-psi increments and a temperature range of 0° to 120° F in 2° increments. The volume of helium is calculated from the observed pressure and temperature of the helium, expressed as a factor from the table, and the known internal volume of the container. The calculation requires a single multiplication. A discussion and evaluation of the accuracy obtainable and a derivation of the formula used (which takes into account compressibility of helium, thermal expansion of steel containers, and the stretch of steel due to internal pressure) are presented. An example showing how the table can be used is given also.

Before describing the electrostatic processing of feldspar, it might be well to review some of the basic definitions and terminology of feldspars. The feldspar minerals constitute a group of alumino-silicates of potassium, sodium, and calcium. Barium feldspar sometimes occurs naturally but is very rare. Hardness varies between 6 and 6.5 and specific gravity between 2.5 and 2.8. Color is generally white or pale shades of red, yellow, or green. The following brief paper is intended, to apply to the concentration of the silver-lead ores at Broken Hill, New South Wales, generally, but more particularly to the process as applied to the ores in the Block 10 mine. The attached plans are similar inmany respects to those prepared, recently for the Block 10 company.Most of the information here given is already well known to those members who are conversant with the concentration practices of this field, but it is the writer's object to give just a few of those figures which he found difficult to obtain when first engaging in practical work. At that time no text-books were at hand from which it was possible to get sufficient details for practical working purposes.It is first supposed that the mine has been thoroughly explored and has been found to contain a lbde sufficient in size ·and quality to warrant the erection of a concentrating plant. The points then to determine are:-(1.) The quantity and cost of water available for steam-making and ore-dressing purposes.(2.) The most convenient site for the mill.

"Center Hill Dam is a critical part of the infrastructure controlling floods at the Caney Fork River and reducing flood levels at the Cumberland, lower Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. The Center Hill Dam Foundation Remediation Project was necessary to address Karst features in the foundation rocks and observed signs of distress of the dam. From 2011 to 2014 BAUER Foundation Corp. (BFC) performed deep foundation works for this project. The executed features of work include the installation of two walls. The first wall extends throughout the clay embankment into the underlying rock to provide encasement during the construction of the second wall. Its width of 7.4 feet makes it the widest diaphragm wall ever installed. The second wall is the actual seepage barrier and provides a continuous 2- feet wide wall. It extends through the first wall into the underlying rock and is up to 300 feet deep. The paper introduces the project, the requirements specified by United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) for encasement and barrier wall and the approaches taken by BFC. It discusses the ground conditions and describes the excavation equipment as well as the excavation methods used. A special focus is put on the steering capabilities of the hydrocutter equipment and the verticality performance.PROJECTBeginning in 2011, BFC was tasked by the USACE with the installation of a seepage barrier/cutoff wall at the Center Hill Dam Foundation Remediation project under a partially performance based specification. The remediation was necessary due to karst features in the foundation rocks and observed signs of distress, which led USACE to rate the dam with the most critical dam safety action classification (DSAC I). The executed features of work include the installation of two walls. The first wall, an encasement wall, extends vertically through the clay embankment and is embedded minimally into the underlying bedrock to provide embankment stability during the construction of the second wall, the barrier wall. The encasement wall is constructed of overlapping panels 7.4 feet (2.25 m) wide, which is the widest diaphragm wall ever installed, and up to 210 feet (64 m) deep. The second wall is the seepage barrier and provides a continuous 2 feet (0.6 m) wide wall consisting of overlapping panels. It extends through the encasement wall into the underlying bedrock and is up to 307 feet (93 m) deep. BAUER BC40 and BC50 hydrocutters mounted on MC96 and MC128 foundation cranes were used to perform the majority of the works (Figure 1). Excavations were performed under bentonite slurry (encasement wall) and water (barrier wall) and concrete was poured with the tremie method. Adding to the challenges, the project had to be executed in an environmentally sensitive area. Based on the high risk, a special focus was put on monitoring, quality control and geometric accuracy. The WallTracker information management system was used to share all relevant data between BFC and USACE (Roff et al. 2014)."

This paper explores the structural/physical and policy based issues that have lead to the apparent resource conflict between Forestry and Mining on the West Coast. Both industries are important to the West Coast and bear many similarities, particularly at the corporate end of the mining scale. However there are very distinct structural differences which set the scene for friction at the boundaries. Examples of how mining impacts upon forestry illustrate where some of the friction arises and provides some insight as to where some solutions are or may be found.

Occurrences of titanium, zircon, and other heavy minerals are widespread in Florida. Deposits concentrated as "heavy sands" by wave and wind action have been mined an or near Atlantic coastal beaches since 1916. An important inland concentration at Trail Ridge; .believed, to have formed along an ancient share line, was disclosed by preliminary investigations (1947) by the Bureau of Mines. This report describes investigations to determine the extent and grade of "heavy-sand" concentrations in other inland stabilized dune areas in the central and northeastern parts of the peninsular region of the State (fig. 1). Portions of the central highlands south of Trail Ridge and terraces and dunes in the coastal lowlands region, east and northeast of the ridge were investigated. Holes were drilled in 10 areas (see table 1 and fig. 2) along State and County roads and on private property. They were spaced 250 to 2,000 feet. apart to obtain a cross-sectional picture of "heavy-sand" content in the dune areas. These sections were generally placed in east-west directions normal to the general trend Of the peninsula to intercept one or more of the ancient shore lines in the various areas (figs. 3 to 13, incl.). A total of 433 drive piped and 333 jet holes were drilled, and 7,293 bulk and core samples were taken. Intermediate holes were placed at closer intervals when field analysis indicated 1 percent or more of heavy minerals present. All of the holes drilled and the analysis of samples that contain 1 percent or more of heavy minerals are listed in table 2. Profiles (figs. 14 to 20, inclusive) show the more favorable concentrations, which are irregular in outline and erratic in mineral content. The highest concentrations averaged 1.0 to more than 2.0 percent heavy-mineral content, but a few individual hole samples exceeded 3.0 percent in grade.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) Mae Moh coal mine is an open-cut coal mine in Thailand that produces about 16 Mt of lignite annually to generate 2400 MW of electricity. The surface mine pit covers is 4 km by 7 km with mining depths ranging up to 260 m. A large pit slope is formed with the progression of the mining operation. However, massive slides in the pit slope occur often due to the existence weak planes such as faults and bedding, and the weak mechanical properties of the rocks. Hence, 200 m to 300 m boundaries of rock block including coal seams are left in front of faults in order to prevent slides and maintain the stability of the pit slope. As a result, there are significant coal reserves beneath the abandoned area along the pit slope. Moreover, the mined coal seams are very thick and their thickness range from 15 to 30 m.This paper discusses the application of multi-slicing highwall mining system with stowing to this very thick coal seam left around large pit slopes by means of numerical analysis.

The suitability of char from Yallourn brown coal as a filler for carbon electrodes used in the aluminium smelting industry has been assessed on the basis of the specifications usually laid down by electrode manufacturers for petroleum coke fillers. The purity specifications can be met by a simple acid leaching of the coal before carbonization. The true density of char produced at 1200°C is within 5 per cent of the specification figure, but the bulk density of char obtained from as-mined coal is only half that specified for petroleum coke.Although this can be increased to three-quarters of the specified figure by briquetting the coal before carbonization, further increases would be very difficult to achieve, as the remaining shortfall in density is due to an extensive microporosity developed in the particles of char during carbonization.
