ALL live producers and manufacturers of metals and alloys are investigating new uses for their products. The tin and tin-plate industry is no exception. One-third of all the new tin mined and refined is consumed in making tin plate. Several billions of cans are each year made from tin plate for the preservation of nearly 200 kinds of food. There are more than 500 tin-plate mills or individual stacks in the United States, which country makes more tin plate than all other countries combined and exports large quantities. As much as 1,800,000 tons of till plate has been made in a year in this country, and 28.000 tons of tin has been used in this period for this purpose. In sonic years a third of the till is so consumed; in 1933 it was half of the supply.

The focus in the iron ore industry has shifted from increasing production volumes with less regard for cost, to efficient production of quality tonnes. BHP Billiton iron ore geoscience and exploration has embedded infrared spectroscopic sensing of drill hole samples to help meet this challenge.Infrared spectroscopy is delivering mineral predictions that are used for (automated) geology logging and modelling. The spectra are processed together with other available data sets to predict geometallurgical and geotechnical variables that include lump per cent and uniaxial compressive strength.Trials are ongoing to test the benefit of infrared spectroscopy during mining, including the analysis of grade control samples and remote sensing of mine faces. Results show great benefits in the fields of short-term geology modelling, better understanding of material (handling) properties, identification of geotechnical risk areas and high resolution ore-waste delineation.These trials are bringing BHP Billiton iron ore closer to its ultimate goal of having infrared spectroscopic data collected across the mining value chain. Once such data are available everywhere, regression models can be trained at one point (eg iron grade model trained on exploration samples) and be applied elsewhere (eg iron grade predicted on mine faces). Such predictive analytics will enable not only high precision mining, but also provide maximum time to tailor plant design to the ore in the ground, based on learnings from ores processed in other plants. The analysis described herein evaluates the Bureau of Mines Program for Advancing Mining Technology - Oil Shale in terms of the economic benefits which may be derived for the Nation as a result of its successful research and development efforts. On the basis of postulated oil shale production scenarios, benefit-cost ratio indicators are computed for the program elements as they apply to surface, underground, and modified in situ oil shale mining systems. Eight value indicators are used to measure the Program's beneficial impact on the future oil shale industry in relation to planned research and development costs. These are: capital cost savings, operating cost savings, labor savings environmental quality maintenance cost reduction, reduction in production costs, byproduct production benefits, total production benefits, and additions to recoverable reserves. Program costs are aggregated from 1974 through 1987 and major benefits are accrued from 1982 through 2040. Both cost and benefit streams are discounted to mid-1975 present value.

The following review covers published information on pressing of metal powders at room temperature. Only those operations are considered which occur between the time the powder is filled into the cavity and the compact is ejected from the die. Thus, this review does not concern hot pressing, coining or sizing feed or flow problems, commercial presses nor designs. It was also necessary to disregard to a large extent the effect of pressing on subsequent operations and on properties after sintering. 'The pressing operation is considered independently in its function to compact loose metal powder into useful shapes which can subsequently be handled. There are some comments by the writer in connection with a few of the findings quoted in the literature in order to stimulate thought and discussion. The selection of references quoted in the text is in some cases arbitrary although an attempt was made to favor papers containing novel ideas, techniques or results which mag stimulate future research. In order to enable the reader to check further into the subjects mentioned, the original, rather extensive, bibliography is appended even though not all the references are touched on in the printed version of this review. The equipment used by various workers, for example a die design created by Bridgman,22 is very interesting. 'The die insert has a conical external surface. The vertical pressure exerted on the punch transmits itself to the die which in turn is pushed harder into its tapered retainer. Thus, the higher the pressure exerted on the punch, the higher also the pressure exerted inwards on the die inserts. Inasmuch as this pressure counteracts the internal pressure from the compact the two stresses balance each other so that it is possible to obtain tremendous pressures without breaking the die. The die collar was made from an oil hardening tool steel, heat treated to a tensile strength of some 300,000 psi. The die was closed at the bottom by a plug made from special tool steels. Bridgman found that there is no steel which will withstand a com-pressive stress of 700,000 psi without continuous slow flow or immediate fracture. Therefore, the only material suitable for use in the pressing punch was sintered carbide. In view of the ingenious design it was possible to use special tool steel as die material. Jones22 raises the question whether this method of pressing has practical application in powder metallurgy. Although these tremendous pressures cannot readily be utilized without many special precautions, the tapered die and retainer idea is believed to be useful even for lower pressures. There are rich resources of natural graphite in China. It would be a good opportunity to upgrade national graphite industry if natural graphite with modification is used in lithium ion battery. Micro-crystalline graphite in high purity was coated with a carbon film on the surface. The initial cycle efficiency was improved to be 89.9% and cycle stability was remarkably improved. The experiments proved that microcrystalline graphite with carbon coating have excellent electrochemical performances at low cost as anode materials for lithium-ion battery. In addition, H2SO4-GIC technique was used to prepare the natural flake graphite powders with mild-exfoliation. Sub-micro and nano pores were found in the graphite samples. In correspondence the reversible capacity, rate capacity and cycle life were improved, which would meet the demand of high-power lithium-ion battery. Natural graphite is the most promising anode material for large-scale lithium-ion batteries. The demand of modified graphite grows up greatly in the market. Microcrystalline graphite with surface coating and flake graphite with mild-exfoliation are the promising commercial anode materials for the industry of lithium ion battery.

Rock property tests were performed on NX-size diamond drill core from the roof, floor, and coal from the longwall mining section of Federal No. 2 mine, West Virginia. The purpose of these tests was to determine the engineering properties of the various strata as part of a ground control study of the longwall operation. The following tests were performed: 1. Uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio 2. Triaxial compressive strength 3. Brazilian tensile strength 4. Modulus of rupture 5. A PERMANENT assay office is commonly established as part of the general plant equipment of operating gold and silver properties, but during the development stage of a mine, the cost of such an office is usually so assay work must be done elsewhere. THE development of the North Lily ground, which lies in the East Tintic district, Utah,. about half a mile northwest of the famous Tintic Standard mine, was undertaken by the International Smelting Co. on purely geological reasoning. The geologic theory on which this work was based resulted from several years' intensive study of the East Tintic district by the geological department of the International Smelt-ing Co., who were, during this period, indebted to many for valuable suggestions that were adopted and became part, of the gradually maturing concept. For example, E. J. Raddatz, president of the Tintic Standard Mining Co., first called attention to the significance of rhyolite alteration; J. W. Wade, assistant manager, contributed greatly to our knowledge of the great Tintic Standard orebodies; and so on all along. the line. In short, the ultimate theory embodies the aggregate experience and thought of all those most familiar with the area in question. The problem in brief was this: is the Tintic Standard deposit an isolated occurrence of ore, or are other ore deposits to be found in the vicinity? If the latter is the case, where can these others be looked for? The difficulty of the problem lay in the fact that most of the area is covered by rhyolite; beneath which lies the limestone in which the orebodies occur; so that the available evidence as to the structure of the formations, and, their mineralization; is of the slightest. The sav-ing features of the case, by means of which it proved possible to solve the problem, are three in number first, the rhyolite is pre-mineral and hence has been exposed to alteration by the mineralizing agencies; second, certain persistent dikes and fissures are con-tinuous through the rhyolite into the limestone below; and third, the extensive underground workings of the Tintic Standard gave a good basis for study of the sub-rhyolite structure and the occurrence of ore. The rhyolite overlies the Tintic Standard orebodies, and over them shows a large patch of brownish altera-tion. This patch proves to be due to chloritization and sericitization, which has spread out from certain zones of dikes, pebble-dikes and fissures. The dikes are com-posed of a light fine-grained rock which has been altered to an aggregate of quartz, alunite, and magnetite. They can be traced southwest to a common center in Big Hill, the entire mass of which is composed of the same material. The pebble-dikes, which consist of a mass of rounded pebbles, mainly quartzite, in a matrix ranging from the same quartz-alunite-magnetite rock as above to almost pure vein quartz, are closely asso-ciated with these light dikes, but in general extend farther northeast. They thus represent a specialized phase of the intrusive action of which Big Hill is the center. The brown chloritized rhyolite, then, is an alteration product due, in all. probability, to emana-tions closely associated with this phase. Since it coin-cides geographically with the Tintic Standard area of highly altered limestone, with its many great ore-bodies, it has been concluded, that it is the expression in the rhyolite of activities which have also altered and mineralized' the underlying limestone.

The East Side Access (ESA) Project will extend Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) into midtown Manhattan via 11 km of tunnels, a new terminal station and associated support facilities. In addition to the hard-rock tunneling currently underway in Manhattan, soft-ground tunnels in Queens will traverse beneath Amtrak?s Sunnyside Yard and Harold Interlocking, the busiest rail interlocking in North America. This paper details ESA?s coordinated approach to interfacing with both Amtrak and LIRR with regard to the planned tunnels, shafts and related construction beneath or adjacent to the operating railroads. This interface includes integration of railroad staff, extensive presentations, reviews and agreements with the railroads regarding settlement mitigation, real-time automated geo-instrumentation monitoring, ground improvement, and geotechnical/environmental controls.

This old and well-known method of determining silver is, in bullion work, so far superior to the furnace-assay that it is looked upon with reverential awe by many, if not by most, users, and its ease of execution, with proper equipment, commends it highly where much commercial bullion work on silver is required. The method is so thoroughly well known that a description of it here may seem to be unnecessary, but many thousands of determinations are annually made by it in the U. S. Mint Service and its practice is there reduced to an art. This is necessary both for the sake of economy of time, and because high-grade work with it requires constant practice. It is useless for a person who uses it only occasionally to expect to attain high accuracy with it, without spending more time upon a detemination than is warranted in a busy commercial laboratory. It is always employed in the Mint service whenever possible, but its chief field is in the determination of silver in standard silver (ingots and coin), which is 900 fine in silver and 100 fine in copper, and I shall first briefly outline its use on this metal and then take up various points in detail, especially as related to the accuracy of the results obtained. For this determination 1,115 mg. of standard metal are weighed and transferred to a glass-stoppered bottle, the metal is dissolved in nitric acid, and 100 cc. of a standard solution of NaCl run in. The bottle is then vigorously shaken and a measured portion of a decimal salt solution added, and again shaken, if necessary. These operations are repeated until the silver is precipitated. Standard metal being 900 fine, 1,115 mg. should carry 1,003.5 mg. of silver, which is a convenient figure to work with.

"Triton Mining Corporation acquired the rights to Mina El Limon in Nicaragua in 1993 by international bid. The bid included the gold operations at Limon and an exploration concession of approximately 4000 km2. Triton assumed control of operations and exploration in May 1994.The Limon mine is located in west-central Nicaragua, approximately 100 kilometers northwest of Managua. The climate is tropical, characterized by a wet season from May through October, and a dry season November through April. Gold at Limon is associated with both banded quartz and silicified breccia veins in Tertiary volcanic rocks, belonging to the lower Coyol Group. Mining is from two open pits and one mechanized underground operation. A second underground mine is currently under development for production during 1997.This paper describes the expansion of the milling facility at El Limon from a nominal capacity of 400 tonnes/day, producing approximately 20,000 ounces of gold annually, to the existing 900 tonne per day mill operation. Engineering of the new mill facility was initiated in September 1994 and construction was completed a year later."

Directionally solidified (DS) Rene 80 Superalloy was tested in thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) over the temperature range 500-900°C and plastic strain levels from 0.2 to 0.8% using a DSI Gleeble thermal simulator. Thermo-mechanical testing was carried out on the parent material in the conventional solution treated and aged condition (STA), as well as gas tungsten arc welded with an IN-738 filler, followed by solution treatment and ageing. Comparison of the base TMF unwelded alloy with that of the welded and heat treated alloy showed that varying crack initiation mechanisms, notably oxidation either by stress assisted grain boundary oxidation, or associated with grain boundary MC carbides fatigue crack propagation along grain boundaries and creep deformation were operating, leading to different "weakest link" failure initiation points.

The Torpedo Copper mine in the Organ Mining District, Dona Ana County, N. Mex., was discovered In 1899. Production was begun immediately and continued until 1907. Since 1907 very little ore has been produced, although Many individuals and companies have been interested in the property at one time or another. Approximately 6,621 feet of diamond-core had been completed on the property before 1949. The results from some of this drilling were unsatisfactory because of the poor core recovery. In addition to its investigation of the Torpedo ore deposits, attention was given by the Bureau of Mines to obtaining better core recovery through the use of special equipment and techniques. This project was begun October 3, 1949, and was completed April 30, 1950. Four diamond-drill holes totaling 2,140.5 feet, which includes 18.2 feet of overlap in a deflected hole, were drilled. All drilling was done with a Government-owned hydraulic-feed drill with some special rods and core barrels, in addition to the usual equipment. The over-all core recovery was 89.5 percent. Omitting the drilling in overburden where little or no core was desired, the recovery was 94.6 percent. Core recovery in the ore zones averaged 95.2 percent. This paper describes the location, the general features of the area, the geology, the Bureau of Mines procedures, and the results attained by these procedures.

Variograms can be powerful tools for the analysis and control of process streams and their sampling. Their uses and proper utilisation have been described somewhat unclearly to date, and their limitations and precautions of use are too rarely mentioned. The general meaning and properties of the variogram tool and its use in geostatistics are therefore reviewed in details to derive a critical view of its proper use for process control: what to expect from it and what it cannot deliver and which uses are illusory or potentially misleading. On Bougainville Island in Papua New Guinea, Bougainville Copper Ltd. (BCL) has successfully applied electronic data processing (EDP) techniques to pit operations and mine planning. Though the EDP program is not complete, BCL has realized significant improvements in short and long range mine planning, and equipment and manpower utilization. About 80% of BCL's 4000 employees are Papua New Guinea nationals, and most have little education or training. The operational characteristics of the computer equipment, however, have been quickly adapted by users with low educational standards.

To meet increasing demand of coal, underground mining is largely being replaced by the exploitation at deeper horizons and with greater complexities. The exploitation-proposition may be below not-to-be-disturbed surface properties or below water-bodies, posing a constant threat of inundation. Also, the mounting pressures to limit the adverse impacts on the environment bring the extraction-undertaking to face more challenges. An understanding of subsidence-mechanism and a rational quantification of subsidence parameters is a requisite herein. This paper presents such pragmatic quantification, validated at mine-sites in India. In comparison, better productivity, conservation and safety is ensured in this approach.

SINCE the "Days of Forty-nine" California has been the premier gold producing state of the union. The greatest production was recorded in 1.852, during which year the state's placer and lode deposits yielded over 81 millions. This peak was followed by a steady decline to about 12 millions during the years 1888 to 189.3, a period marked by the cessation of gravel mining. After 1893, production increased to a new peak of over 22 million in 1915, thereafter decreasing steadily to something over 13 million in 1923. Today; California's gold production shows a decrease of 84 per cent. as compared with the output of 1852, and a decrease of 41 per cent, as compared with 1915. It is not a difficult matter to find the causes of this more recent decline. In 1916 there began an upward swing in the cost of labor, which represents approximately 60 per cent. of the cost of mining, and in the price of supplies, representing the remaining, 40 per cent. This rise continued until 1922 and since that year there has been no decided tendency either upward or downward. The increase in the cost of mining since 1916 is variously estimated at from 50 to 75 per cent.; the price of gold has remained fixed at $20.67 per oz. This condition resulted in wiping out the profits of the low-grade operations which, in recent years, have constituted California's main source of supply of gold ore. It is now predicted that there will be renewed activity in California- gold mining. What are chances for the materialization of this forecast? A boom or even a revival of gold mining must of necessity be brought about or accompanied by one or more of the following factors: 1. A decrease in the cost of mining. 2. An increase in the price of gold. 3. New capital for development. 4. The discovery of new deposits. 5. The revival of hydraulic mining.

A symposium was held on January 30 and 31, 1973, at Pittsburgh, Pa., to review the state-of-the-art in designing and utilizing diesel-powered equipment in underground mining. The Health and Safety Activity of the Bureau of Mines sponsored the symposium with major assistance from the following four participating organizations: The American Mining Congress J. Allen Overton, President The United Mine Workers of America Arnold R. Miller, President The National Independent Coal Operator's Association Cloyd D. McDowell, President The Bituminous Coal Operators' Association, Inc. Guy Farmer, President Seventeen papers were presented during four half-day sessions devoted to the general subjects of the diesel engine, the place of the diesel in underground mining, health protection using diesels underground, and maintaining safety of diesels underground. Eleven of the speakers were from industrial organizations here and abroad; one represented the Provincial Government of Nova Scotia; two were with the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare; and three reported on Bureau of Mines work related to diesels.

1967 will be remembered as the year the world realized it was running out of silver. In May of this year a new era in tin the history of the white metal was begun as the power of the U.S. Treasury to regulate world .silver markets was staggered by one of the most intense speculative flurries in recent times. In the past few months the price of silver has risen from $1, 29 to over $1.80 per troy ounce and with it have spiraled the prices of a host of silver-bearing consumer items. Legislation has, been enacted to conserve our coinage and meager silver stocks and today large quantities of non-existent silver are trading hands at a fast pace on the commodity exchanges throughout the world. Now that the price of silver has been set loose, forces are in motion to dull the world's appetite for silver. At the same time there is strong incentive to provide greater quantities of silver to satisfy the world's hunger' for the metal.
